CORNWALL, Ontario - The downtown core was a hive of activity as Cornwall residents took in all the sights, sounds, and flavours of the fourth annual Food Fest. Whatever your palette, Food Fest had it. From authentic Mexican street food to gourmet poutine, there was no shortage of spots to grab some grub. “It’s bee a really exciting day – we’re changing things up a little bit this year,” said Jane McLaren, Program Manager with Beyond 21. “It’s just a really nice vibe on the street. People are just happy and enjoying being out downtown.” Joining forces with CoTiCon and the Kinsmen in Motion Car Show, the event sprawled the length of Pitt and Third all the way down to Lamoureux Park. “I don’t think we’ve ever had a day where there have been things going on from the bandshell straight through to the downtown,” said McLaren. With a full roster of vendors, merchants and entertainment, McLaren says she’s impressed with the local synergy the event has inspired. “What I find neat about today is the fellowship and support between events,” said McLaren. “There’s been a lot of cooperation, rather than a bunch of events working in isolation.” Food Fest is one of the organization’s major fundraisers, with sponsorships covering the cost of the event. CORNWALL, Ontario - Following yesterday’s upset at the removal of a Sixth Street Cairn, the congregation of St. John’s Presbyterian Church issued a statement underlining the factors leading to their decision. “In the interest of transparency for the lack of notice to the public and any concern/understanding that may have resulted from the removal of the cairn, we most humbly apolo-
gize,” reads the release. In 2016 the church decided that the monument had to be removed due to the poor condition of the structure, and the fact that children continued climbing and playing on it. “The past winter has been particularly hard on the cairn. Action was required to ensure the safety of the public using the park to ensure children and youth are not jeopardizing their personal safety because of crumbling walls and stone despite the wrought iron fence,” reads the statement.
According to the release, there has been major deterioration of the cement holding the headstones in place, causing many of the headstones to crack beyond repair. Despite a major restoration effort which took place in the 1987, the structure has continued to deteriorate. “The general condition of the cairn was inappropriate for the proper respect for our ancestors,” a statement reads. “Consistent with the Cemeteries Act of Ontario we followed our course of action on Monday recognized this
obligation.” The congregation agreed to a multiyear plan to minimize liability and to determine how to properly mark the significance of this property in Cornwall’s history. Several headstones were salvaged, but the next step will be forming a committee to determine how best to memorialize those still buried onsite. There is no intention to sell the land or erect a building. Once the congregation has agreed and sufficient funds raised, a replacement marker will be installed.

Asylum seekers are mostly families seekers are crossing in Quebec and are being processed at the Lacolle crossing which is about 50 minutes south of Montreal. Dumas explained that they are mostly Haitian and that mostly families, including children are being sent to Cornwall. Brad Nuttley estimated that roughly 40 percent of the asylum seekers were children. Kim Coe-Turner, General Manager of the Nav Centre explained that she is housed right next to the asylum seekers and that they have been perfect guests, which Nuttley verified. Shawn Hoag, of the CBSA said that all asylum seekers were being processed at the Lacolle Inspection Station and only those who are identified as low risk are being sent to Cornwall. Dumas said that he expected the vast majority will go to Montreal after they are processed to join the large Haitian community that is there. At least one councillor, Elaine MacDonald, hoped that the asylum seekers would consider staying in Cornwall and making a life here. “If we could, we should tell them what a fabulous city they are in right now,” she said. “So that they fall in love with this City now. Let’s be welcoming.” The crowd gathered in Council Chambers responded to Councillor MacDonald’s sentiments with loud cheers.

CORNWALL, Ontario - At a packed special meeting of Council, municipal, provincial and federal agencies updated Cornwall City Council on the status of asylum seekers at the Nav Centre. The Canadian Border Services Agency (CBSA), Cornwall’s Emergency Management department, the Ministry of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship and the Field Office of the Fire Marshal and Emergency Management all presented information to council. The Mayor himself admitted that the situation was changing so quickly that even information that had been agreed upon that morning had already changed. The main detail that council wanted settled was which federal agency was taking the lead on this project. That position has changed several times since the Nav Centre agreed to house the asylum seekers last Tuesday, and as of Monday night, there was no federal organization currently identified as the lead agency. Council seemed to be in agreement that this detail needed to be settled quickly and the Mayor pressed Louis Dumas, Director General of Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship to quickly identify a lead agency, a system to provide information to citizens and a public meeting. “The message I’m sending from people around this table is to find that lead and get people’s questions answered,” the Mayor said. What was explained is that there are currently around 300 asylum seekers staying at the Nav Centre. The Nav Centre has offered space for 500 and there are no plans for more beyond that. In order to accommodate the Nav Centre’s
other obligations temporary shelters have been setup outside the Nav Centre by the Canadian Forces. They include five to 10 person tents, privacy fences and lighting. Additionally there is a clinic on site managed by the Eastern Ontario Health Unit (EOHU) to address any health needs of the asylum seekers. Emergency Management Coordinator Bradley Nuttley explained that one asylum seeker has already had a baby. The so-called “tent city” will be a temporary measure however as the Nav Centre is currently experiencing a high capacity, which is expected to ease in the winter and the asylum seekers will be moved inside. The plan is to move 50 asylum seekers in and move 50 out in a continuous flow. Dumas said that most of these asylum

Barack Obama, but Donald Trump has threatened to rescind their protections. Rather than waiting to wake up one morning and find out that they were now living in the U.S. illegally, and could be possibly deported, they left before this could happen. It is a logical response to imminent risk. While they did cross into Canada illegally, they were arrested immediately by the RCMP and border services agents. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has said that they will receive no special preference in the immigration process because they crossed into Canada illegally and the federal government will vet the asylum seekers and those who prove that they are deserving

Last week, the federal government announced that the Nav Centre in Cornwall will be hosting up-to 500 asylum seekers who crossed into Canada illegally from Quebec. They are mostly of Haitian origin and survived the earthquake that devastated their homeland in 2010. First of all, I just want to say that it is entirely understandable that they would want to seek refuge in Canada. These asylum seekers had been staying in the United States under the protection of an Executive Order issued by President

of the protections that we can provide will receive them. The reaction I’ve seen to the story that Cornwall will be hosting asylum seekers has been largely positive, but some negativity and misinformation has also been going around and that’s disappointing. The City of Cornwall will be reimbursed for all expenditures related to the hosting of these asylum seekers so there isn’t going to be a direct cost to the city. Some in social media comments sections have said that it is unfair that asylum seekers will be getting so much federal money. This is not true and this has been debunked by Dr. Silvia D’Addario and her students at York University.
Asylum seekers receive no money on arrival to Canada and there is no monthly pension. Asylum seekers are given some financial support from the federal government, but this amounts to less than the poverty line in Canada. Ultimately, these are people in need, and Canada can help them. Canada is one of the most prosperous countries in the G7 and is full of opportunities. We have a growing economy, but don’t have a birth rate to match it. These asylum seekers will make fine Canadians and will contribute to our growth as a nation. As a city, our only job is to be hospitable hosts and show them the best of Canada and I believe that Cornwall is up to that task.
Healthy eating strategy coming soon Diabetes, obesity, high blood pressure and other diseases are making many Canadian sick. This situation can change dramatically if Canadians make major changes to the way they live and eat. Many people try to avoid organic food because of costs. The federal government is soon planning to come up with a new strategy to encourage Canadians to eat healthier foods. The strategy will include new labeling systems for food, particularly processed food. Over the last few decades, Canadians are
showing more incidents of heart attacks and strokes. The federal proposals may cost almost $2 billion. However, the long term cost on our health care system is much greater. Health Minister Jane Philpott said she has to consider the long term cost of Canadians developing chronic diseases such as diabetes and high blood pressure after years of eating unhealthy food. “One of the most important things about our health is what we eat and how we eat,” she said recently. Health Canada is in the middle of public
consultation as it revamps the Canadian Food Guide. The strategy may include ban on advertising and marketing of junk food to kids and teens. Health Canada is also looking at adding packaging symbols warning consumers about foods that are high in salt, sugar or saturated fat. “Our goal would be to have something that people are going to look at that would be as simple as possible and as easy to identify as possible,” the minister added. The new guide will recommend Canadians eat more vegetables, fruit, whole grains and protein-rich foods, with a focus on plant-based sources of protein.

Philpott is urging food processors to make their products with less salt and sugar. The minister said the new guide will not promote vegan or vegetarian diets. It will simply offer broader choices for people who don’t eat meat. The saying goes “You are what you eat.” It will also be prudent for the government to encourage Canadians to exercise more and eat right. How many of us take to heart? All Canadians like to eat meals which taste better. Time has come to seriously tackle the issue of healthy eating.

North Dundas Mayor Eric Duncan, often seen as a rising star in the ranks of the federal Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry Conservative Association and potential successor to MP Guy Lauzon, is taking a break from politics when his term as North Dundas mayor ends in 2018. The former legislative assistant to Lauzon feels that after a 12-year run on the political track, he needs to step back and contemplate his future (in politics) which is why he shouldn’t be ruled out as a Conservative candidate farther down the road. He has all the tools: young, absolutely brilliant and a triple A personality, not to mention a wealth of experience. His decision to take a break leaves the door wide open for the riding nomination ... if Super Guy, who has owned the riding, decides to retire. It is a big if. Hard to believe, but at age 30 the South Mountain native will have served on North Dundas council for 12 years. He was on council before he graduated from Carleton University with a bachelor of Arts degree in, of course, political science. The year he graduated from Carleton, 2010, he became one of the youngest mayors in Canadian history. He became the youngest warden, first term, in the 162-year history of SD and G. Le nouveau règlement de La Nation bannit l’usage de tous les produits du tabac incluant chique, chicha, cigarettes électroniques et pipes à eau, partout sur les propriétés municipales sauf dans les endroits désignés; ceux-ci devant être situés à plus de 20 mètres de toutes les entrées, les sorties et les fenêtres ouvrables des bâtiments. Le règlement interdit également l’utilisation de n’importe quel produit à fumer ou à vapoter près des entrées des installations municipales, les passerelles, les sentiers et les parcs sans structures ou les terrains sportifs. Le règlement sera appliqué par les agents d’ordonnance municipale de La Nation ainsi que les agents d’exécution de la loi sur le tabac du BSEO. La nouvelle désignation des espaces sans tabac vise à protéger les enfants, les jeunes et les adultes de la fumée secondaire et de la vapeur. Ces espaces permettront aussi d’assurer que ces environnements soient utilisés à leurs fins respectives dans le but de promouvoir de saines activités récréatives. « Je suis fier que le Conseil ait adopté une proposition pour réduire l’exposition aux produits du tabac dans les milieux municipaux, » dit le maire de La Nation, M. CORNWALL, Ontario - CoTiCon grown significantly from its humble beginnings in 2014, having recently collaborated with Cornwall Food Fest and Beyond 21. Hosted in Lamoureux Park, cosplayers had the opportunity to take part in contests, games, and a walkabout through the downtown core. Montreal-based, pair, TSKUKI No StarDust say they’ve been doing competitive cosplay for over three years now. “Usually when we choose a character to cosplay, it’s because we really like them and identify with them,” they said. “We have day jobs, so
some costumes can take us months to make.” Event organizer, Annie DeRochie says that the partnership with Food Fest has been a breeze. “They’re really easy to work with,” said DeRochie. “And they like what we do because it brings in even more interest to their cause.” As far as DeRochie is concerned, the partnership will continue next year, as well. With planning starting almost immediately after the costumes come off this year, DeRochie says that it’s important to know what to expect. “It would be a very catastrophic event if I didn’t plan ahead,” laughed DeRochie. Dressed as Marin from the Legend of Zelda:
Link’s Awakening, DeRochie said that running an event called for something ‘light and airy.’ “Unfortunately, I couldn’t wear any of my bigger costumes today,” said said. “But people are here enjoying themselves, so I can’t complain.”

Downtown Cornwall was full of flavour this Saturday, as residents ate their hearts out at the fourth annual Food Fest. Sprawling from Pitt and Third down to the Band Shell, it was a weekend chock-full of activities. With food vendors and merchants aplenty, there was no shortage of grub to be had, or downtown perusing to do. Whether you were enjoying a patio pint at Schnitzels, hanging out in
Pommier Square, or scarfing down tacos from Bonitas Cantina, there was something for everyone this weekend. Lamoureux Park was filled with goods, games, and geeks, as CoTiCon injected some quirky fun into the downtown core. Adorned in their finest threads, cosplay enthusiasts eventually made their way downtown during their walkabout. Also, out in full force this weekend were the
street machines at the annual Kinsmen in Motion Show & Shine. In conjunction with Cornwall Food Fest, show cars were lined up and shined up down First and Pitt street – just steps away from the event’s delicious food vendors. Saturday evening wrapped up with the city’s highly anticipated Music Fest. A good time was had by all in the name of rock and roll, with Michel
Pagliaro, Barstool Prophets, The Box, and the Darby Mills Project taking the Nav Centre’s outdoor stage. Closing out a busy weekend was the Doors Open event, unlocking some of Cornwall and area’s most interesting tourist stops including the Lost Villages Museum, the Historic SDG Jail, Cornwall Community Museum in the Wood House, and Aultsville Theatre, to name a few.

Detergent manufacturers try to attract buyers with specific laundry problems. Some detergents come with special ingredients such as colour-safe bleach, fabric softener or stain-fighting enzymes. Some are free of perfumes and dyes. There are only a few remaining regular-strength detergents. And now there are superconcentrated or “ultra” products, whose containers are as small as a lunch box but can hold enough detergent for many loads. The truth is that all detergents clean lightly soiled clothes. But some are better than others at keeping loosened soil from settling back on clothes, for stain removal and brightening. Powders, as a class, outperform most liquids. Products that contain bleach or bleach-alternative tend to outperform those that do not.

The Statistics Canada Annual Labour Force Survey (2016) highlights that only 52.6% of the available workforce age 15 and over was participating in the labour force as of 2016. The Eastern Ontario Training Board is helping to build bridges to employment for local youth by making free short-term skills training available followed by placement in local companies. EOTB works with local businesses to find areas of labour market demand for entrylevel workers and to identify the skills needed by employers. The board then collaborates with St. Lawrence College to develop and deliver short-term skills training 8 to 12 weeks in length. The programs include technical skills training as well as the ‘soft’ skills like dependability and teamwork that are highly sought by employers. This in-school training is followed by 8 to 12 weeks of on-the-job instruction in the workplace of a local employer. The results are noteworthy. Over 70% leave the program fully employed or heading back to school. Jobs have been found in manufacturing, retail, information services, warehousing and hospitality services. CORNWALL, Ontario - Do you have any soft dolls like a Cabbage Patch doll? Consider donating it to St. John Ambulance, you could help them teach others how to save a life. Currently, St. John Ambulance in Cornwall only have one doll to use for teaching in their babysitting courses, which can have as many as 18 students. The dolls are also used in their Home Alone
and New Parent courses and St. John Ambulance is hoping to get at least 20 dolls so that all of the students in their courses have an opportunity to learn hands-on. All dolls that are to be donated can be dropped off at the front office of St. John Ambulance, which is located beside Cornwall electric on Sydney St. St. John Ambulance gives back to the community through training and all they ask for in return are donations and volunteers so they can continue to offer their lifesaving services.

Your dog needs exercise even when it’s hot, but be sure to take extra care with older dogs, those with thick coats and short-nosed breeds. On very hot days, it’s best to limit exercise to the early morning or evening hours. Keep in mind that the asphalt on road surfaces can get extremely hot in the sunshine and if it’s too hot for your bare feet, then it’s too hot for Fido’s paw pads! Also make sure that you treat your pet to a nice bowl of cool fresh water once the exercising is done.
