CORNWALL, Ontario - The latest film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe had Cornwall residents excited to sport their red and black.

With the theatrical release of Spider-Man: Homecoming, Fantasy Realm’s Randy and Carol Sauve felt it was necessary to celebrate all things Spidey. Imogen Forrester was the

youngest web-slinging fan of the day, and was thrilled to indulge in a Spider-Man themed cupcake, courtesy of Riley’s Bakery.

Randy says that the event received a great response, with some fans waiting for doors to open.

“There was one woman here this morning who had set up a chair,” said Randy. “People tend to get pretty excited about these types of events.”

The Camerons are currently on a winning streak of five wins in a row from 2012 through to 2016. Of the past ten competitions, The Camerons have won all but three! That distance has never been a weak point for the team as they always show up ready for a tough fight on the rope.

The two new teams, Brockville and 42 Field Regiment, are a welcome expansion to the competition. They will be the wild cards in this year’s show.

MAXVILLE, Ontario - As the Glengarry Highland Games prepares to celebrate its 70th year on August 4th and 5th, the many planning committees are working to make it an outstanding show for everyone who attends. Added to the traditional Games events of piping, drumming, dancing and heavyweights are several events that have grown to be much anticipated attractions of the Games.

One of these that has attracted a strong following over the past 10 years is the Tug of War. The tug of war was a feature of many of the early Games but fell out of favour until North and Glengarry teams began their rivalry pull before the Friday night Tattoos. In 2008, a demonstration Tug of War was held between the SD&G Highlanders and the Cameron Highlanders from Ottawa. Since then the Highland Regiment Tug of War has rapidly grown to last year’s record number of 12 teams competing before an enthusiastic Games crowd.

“The Highlanders Tug-o-War Challenge Cup is the only sporting event created and designed specifically for units of the Canadian Army Reserve. There is no other sporting event of its kind in Canada that is available for Canadian Army Reserve units. Physically demanding team sports have long been appreciated by militaries around the world as a means to develop their fighting force. They are key to building strong, dedicated unit bonds and esprit de corps that is critical to military success.

Tug-o-War is ideally suited for Army Reserve units as it requires few resources, no prior experience, and requires no more than a section of soldiers (the basic building block of capability within the Army) for a team, where success is more a function of unit cohesion and leadership than raw physical strength and body mass. It’s a technical sport that demands the full cooperation and rhythm of a soldiers working together in exact harmony...perfect for small unit leadership development.

Combined with the public competition venue presented by the Glengarry Highland Games, The Highlanders Tug-o-War Challenge Cup has a significant contribution on unit morale, leadership development, self-discipline, teamwork, loyalty, and commitment while establishing and building strong community ties,” states Bud Walsh, Director of the Highland Challenge Event.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Canada isn’t the only one celebrating a milestone birthday – St. Lawrence College has officially been shaping young minds for 50 years, and celebrated, Cornwall-style this Saturday.

The festivities took place at SLC’s Cornwall campus, but are slated to continue across the trifecta until July 15. With earlier activities taking place outdoors, SLC’s Alumni & Donor Relations Officer, Kris Ward says that the rain held off just long enough.

“Mother Nature tried to affect us, but we powered through, and it’s really been an amazing day,” said Ward. The earlier part of the day was very

family-minded with inflatables, face painting, magicians, and a photo booth.

Later in the evening, the college welcomed alumni the Shark Tank to join in the libations for the celebratory Pub Night. “There’s been a lot of memories, a lot of tears, a lot of laughter shared here and we’re excited to celebrate it,” said Ward.

For entertainment, the evening featured a full roster of SLC talent, starting with homegrown Stacy McPhail spinning some sweet tunes for the first hour. Remembering the downtown CORNWALL, Ontario - It’s been a busy couple of weeks downtown in Cornwall, and there’s more fun and excitement to come as the rest of summer unfolds.

Dignitaries from the Downtown BIA, City of Cornwall and Heart of the City officially unveiled 10 new plaques that are part of the Cornwall Historic Walking Tour.

The tour, which includes 30 large-scale historical illustrations that have been erected along the Cornwall waterfront, and in Le Village, now commemorates the rich history of the Seaway City’s downtown core.

June 30’s unveiling marked the end of 12 months’ worth of work to bring the tour to life downtown.

Brenda Campbell, chair of the Downtown BIA, said the downtown component of the tour adds to the rich history already on display throughout Cornwall.

“We want local residents, and visitors to our community, to know about the role downtown landmarks like the Capitol Theatre and Cornwallis Hotel played in building the foundation of our city. It is important to pay tribute to

the individuals and businesses that helped put Cornwall on the map,” she said.

Todd Lihou, Centretown Coordinator, called the tour the first step in a long chain of events to bridge the future with the past.

“Young people enjoyed the tour and are getting excited about the history of Cornwall,” he said. “These are the kinds of relationships we want to build – to ensure that our traditions live on through future generations.”

While passersby can enjoy the tour in any location, and from any direction, the fun begins in Lamoureux Park at the City of Cornwall Visitor Centre where information about the tour can be found. Illustrations depicting Gleason’s Lock, the Cornwall Orphanage, Capitol Theatre, Royal Hotel and the Paper Mill can be found on the tour.

Cornwall artist Pierre Giroux, whose prowess with the paint brush, brought the illustrations to life. Local historian Lily Worrall completed much of the research that went into the illustrations. Just around the corner is another downtown event that typically draws thousands to the city core.

CORNWALL, Ontario – An active lifestyle is an important part of our overall health. With that in mind, it’s never too soon to encourage physical activity in children.

This Saturday, roughly 100 kids came out to take part in the Cornwall Multisport Club’s annual Kids Day. The event saw youth from as young as two to 16 participating in various runs ranging from 700 meters to 3.74 km.

Event coordinator, Rafeek Mohammed says that Kids Day provides parents with an opportunity to get their children involved in physical activity from an early age.

“The event is free for all children, and everyone’s been doing quite well in their respective categories,” said Mohammed. “We’ve had about a 25 percent increase in participation from last year.”

Sponsored in part by Wendy’s, Economic Development Committee, as well as the Cornwall Multisport Club, roughly 15 volunteers were on hand to help with the morning’s activities.

Ayden’s new eSight CORNWALL, Ontatrio - Ayden Brunet and his father Eric were showing off his new eSight glasses at the Code Heroes summer camp.

Ayden, 11, suffers from a rare congential eye defect which severely limits his field of vision and ability to focus.

Nystagmus prevents Ayden from seeing more than 20 feet in front of him. Without his eSight glasses he needs to sit in the middle of the front row in class at school to see the board and needs to be only a few feet away from the TV. “I realized that without my glasses, to me

things look like they do in Minecraft, all pixelated,” he said.

A little over a month ago, his parents started fundraising money to get their son eSight glasses after an article about the technology was shared with them by Kelly Bergeron, the founder of Code Heroes. A full set of eSight equipment costs roughly $13, 000.

The technology itself, developed by the eSight Corporation, has a battery pack, controller and camera visor. All of this equipment not only allows Ayden to see more clearly, but he can also zoom up to 24 times and take still images to view later.

“They’ve asked us to take baby steps with them at first,” Ayden said.

Ayden said that while he is now able to sit at the back of the movie theatre to watch films, that he does feel a little boxed in with the lack of peripheral vision.

Right now Ayden is limited to using his

eSight for one hour a day for two weeks while he works with his mentor, who is an former police sergeant. Ayden himself hopes to go into the police force one day.

While he was at Code Heroes on Friday, he demonstrated the new technology to the kids at the summer camp and Kelly Bergeron said that they were very interested in the new revolutionary glasses.

Le CSDCEO célèbre ses succès Communiqué de presse de la CSDCEO Le Conseil de district catholique de l’est ontarien (CSDCEO) est fier de souligner les succès réalisés lors de la première année de son Plan stratégique 2016-2020 : Réussite.

Depuis septembre dernier, plusieurs initiatives ont permis d’appuyer la réussite des élèves. Sur le plan des mathématiques, une stratégie renouvelée de la maternelle à la 12e année et des soirées familiales de mathématiques ont été implantées. Sur le plan de l’écocitoyenneté, des stations de remplissage d’eau et l’éclairage DEL ont été installés dans toutes les écoles du CSDCEO, en plus de l’installation de panneaux solaires à huit écoles, tout ceci dans le but de réduire l’impact sur l’environnement. Enfin, en ce qui a trait aux compétences du 21e siècle, elles sont plus que jamais à l’avant-plan. Le projet des Petits entrepreneurs du CSDCEO a vu le jour, donnant ainsi le goût de l’entrepreneuriat aux élèves, une nouvelle thématique pastorale francophone est née avec comme titre « Change le monde » et des rencontres ont lieu dans les écoles afin de sensibiliser les élèves et les membres du personnel au sujet de la citoyenneté numérique.

Par contre, elle migre rapidement et il ne faut pas aller loin dans les bois pour la rencontrer.

Les tiques infectées transmettent une bactérie appelée le Borrelia burgdoferi. Les tiques sont infectées par cette bactérie lorsqu’elles se nourrissent du sang des animaux sauvages infectés comme les oiseaux et les rongeurs.

Une fois infectées, les tiques peuvent transmettre la bactérie aux humains et aux animaux de compagnie, notamment les chiens. Dans la plupart des cas, la tique infectée doit être fixée et doit se nourrir pendant au moins 24 heures avant

que la bactérie soit transmise.

Il est courant que l’on ne s’aperçoive pas que l’on a été piqué par la tique. Il est donc recommandé d’inspecter toutes les surfaces de notre corps lorsque l’on revient d’une randonnée. Notre animal de compagnie peut également être porteur de la tique et nous transmettre la tique et non la maladie. C’est la tique infectée qui nous transmet la maladie.

Lorsqu’on est piqué par une tique, le mot d’ordre est de la retirer le plus rapidement possible en prenant soin de ne pas écraser sa tête.

Les premiers symptômes peuvent se développer entre 3 et 30 jours suivants la piqûre avec une rougeur sur la peau qui peut atteindre 5cm.

• La conception préliminaire et l’évaluation environnementale de portée générale pour la remise en état du ponceau du ruisseau Finney Bien que l’ampleur des travaux nécessaire et leurs répercussions éventuelles sur la circulation soient à l’étude, on s’attend à ce que les travaux suivants soient menés : • Routes de comté 2 et 34 – Remplacer la structure actuelle par une structure comptant le même nombre de voies de circulation. Les véhicules continueront d’y circuler pendant les travaux. Pendant la démolition de la structure, les véhicules circulant sur l’autoroute 401 devront faire un bref détour – probablement pendant une nuit. On devrait également fermer les bretelles d’accès sur une courte période.

• Ponts sur la rivière Raisin – Remplacer les deux ponts de l’autoroute 401 sur la rivière Raisin. Pendant les travaux, l’autoroute ne comptera qu’une seule voie dans chaque direction.

• Ponceau du ruisseau Finney – L’étude portera sur l’ampleur des travaux de remise en état à effectuer pour le ponceau situé sous l’autoroute 401 et à l’est de l’échangeur, entre les routes de comté 2 et 34.

La majorité des travaux sont prévus dans l’emprise existante du MTO. L’ampleur des perturbations de la circulation causées par chaque projet, qui est à l’étude, sera présentée au public au fur et à mesure que ce projet avancera. Ces études font suite à l’Évaluation environnementale de portée générale pour les routes provinciales (2000) du MTO. Les projets des routes de comté 2 et 34 et de la rivière Raisin sont considérés comme des projets de groupe « B », tandis que celui du ponceau du ruisseau Finney, comme un projet de groupe « C ». Les projets de groupe « B » peuvent avoir des répercussions graves sur l’environnement et comportent des améliorations importantes à l’infrastructure. Dans ce cas, il faut consulter la population et les organismes concernés et, entre autres, publier un document qu’on doit mettre à la disposition des citoyens et de ces organismes. Les projets de groupe « C » sont considérés comme des améliorations mineures au réseau de transports, dont les effets sur l’environnement seraient minimes, prévisibles et faciles à atténuer.

Les résidants du bassin versant de la Nation Sud sont souvent étonnés d’apprendre que la rivière abrite quelque 72 espèces de poissons, incluant plusieurs propres à la pêche sportive.

Un des principaux rôles de la Conservation de la Nation Sud (CNS) est de répertorier les habitats et les populations de diverses espèces de poissons tout en surveillant la qualité de l’eau. C’est précisément ce que l’office fait à chaque année dans le cadre du Protocole d’évaluation des rivières de l’Ontario (PÉRO) a indiqué le technicien des ressources à la CNS, Ryan Robson.

Le projet est fondé sur la collaboration des propriétaires fonciers qui sont toujours heureux de découvrir la quantité et la variété de poissons capturés dans les cours d’eau locaux. Les propriétaires participants reçoivent un rapport récapitulatif des conclusions du PÉRO. De plus, un résumé de ce rapport est affiché sur le site Web de la CNS au www.nation.on.ca. « Malgré la présence d’eau trouble causée par le limon, la qualité de l’eau dans la Nation Sud est adéquate pour assurer la survie de plusieurs poissons d’eau douce » a indiqué M. Robson. « La diversité et l’abondance de poissons sont de bons indicateurs de la qualité de l’eau ».

Cette saison (juin-septembre), le PÉRO prélèvera des échantillons dans les municipalités de La Nation, Alfred Plantagenet et la Cité de Clarence Rockland. Les affluents à l’étude incluent les ruisseaux Clarence et Bear, le lac Georges, le ruisseau du lac Cobb et la rivière Scotch.

Le personnel de la CNS a besoin de deux à trois jours par site pour effectuer une collecte complète des données incluant les poissons, les insectes, la morphologie du site et les conditions générales.

Des appareils pouvant enregistrer la température de l’eau seront installés à chaque endroit afin de déterminer la dynamique thermale du cours d’eau. À l’automne, des échantillons additionnels seront prélevés dans chaque site afin d’étudier la présence des invertébrés benthiques. « Les insectes aquatiques sont un bon indice de la qualité de l’eau car, à l’encontre des poissons, ils ne peuvent pas se déplacer aussi facilement en cas de changement soudain des conditions de l’eau. Leur diversité et leur nombre témoignent de la santé d’un cours d’eau ».

De plus, le personnel de la CNS profite de sa présence sur les affluents pour identifier des projets de restaurations des rives et de plantation d’arbres qui seront entrepris en collaboration avec les propriétaires. L’office offre de l’aide en matière de conception du projet, les services de plantation d’arbres et le financement éventuel.

Scrambling for success with BGC Nick Seebruch

This event is one of the biggest fundraisers CORNWALL, Ontario - The Boys and Girls of the year for BGC. This year, they hoped to raise Club (BGC) of Cornwall held their ninth annual $30, 000.

Scramble for Success Golf Tournament, The BGC had a packed event on Thursday with 36 teams and 144 participants.

On top of the support on the course, the event had more than 50 volunteers who all worked to make sure that the day was a success.

Of the money raised by the golf tournament 100 percent of it remains in the community.

“This money will be going towards things

like our teen programs,” said BGC Executive Director Jacquie Richards. “It is harder to find funding for this age category, but it is a really critical time in life.”

Polio has disabled millions and pulled people further into poverty, has been reduced by 99 per cent over the past 25 years.

Global efforts have delivered progress, immunizing more than two billion children and saving more than 8,000,000 children from lifelong paralysis or death.

Rotarians are hopeful many countries around the globe will come to the aid of eliminating polio once and for all.

Canada has in the past played a leading role in ending polio.

Rotary International and other organizations have helped immunize more than 2.5 billion children against polio in 130 countries.

For as little as 60 cents, a child can be protected against this crippling disease for life.

Rotary’s advocacy efforts have played a major role in decisions by donor governments to contribute more than $7.2 billion to this effort.

Every dollar Rotary commits to polio eradication will be matched two-to-one by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation up to #35 million a year through 2018.

I have not been attending Cornwall Council meetings very long, only two years, but this is the first time in my memory where councillors were uncertain about why they were discussing a particular issue.

The issue at hand was the removal of the remaining piers left over from the Seaway International Bridge. The reason for the confusion is that the ultimate authority that will decide if, when and how the piers are removed is the Federal Bridge Corporation. The federal government is in no way obligated to consider the wishes of the municipality.

That being said, the feds absolutely should consult with the municipality to find out what the citizens of Cornwall want to see on their waterfront; recent history if anything, has showed us that.

Regardless if the piers stay or go they will remain under the custody of the federal government, so already, there is no risk or liability to the City of Cornwall.

A second important point to consider is that the estimated cost to remove the piers, as quoted by Cornwall General Manager of Infrastructure and Municipal Works John St. Marseille, is between $5-6 million. Given that cost of removing those three piers, if there is a constructive and cheaper way to use them, then

as a taxpayer I want that course of action to be considered.

Right now there is no timeline to remove the piers, there are also no plans on what to do with them if they stay. So what would be the harm in having the creative minds of Cornwall present their best ideas as to what could be done with these pieces of Cornwall’s history?

I have written a few pieces on the history of Cornwall, and it seems that what remains of most of our landmarks are commemorative plaques.

The Seaway International Bridge was the most identifiable landmark in Cornwall. Right up until the bridge came down, if you viewed Cornwall from the air, the best way to realize what you were looking at was by finding that bridge.

So how about this time, instead of tearing something down, we try to find a way to celebrate it as a part of our history.

If no suitable ideas to preserve the piers and make use of them comes forward, then tear Sultan Jessa them down, but especially since there is no cost or liability to the city, I believe that Council Poliomyelitis (polio) is a paralyzing and fatal should change its mind on this one and see disease that continues to threaten children what the citizens of Cornwall can come up with. everywhere.

In 1985, Rotary International launched a vigorous campaign to eradicate polio through mass vaccination of children.

“Rotary International has played a prominent role in the war against polio,” said a spokesman for Rotary International. “We are getting close to defeating polio.”

One concern is lack of funding could wipe out over two decades of global immunization drives.

This unprecedented situation has led the World Health Organization (WHO) to label it as

This might have been the best $1,600 investment by a Cornwall city council.

In the summer of 1961 the board which operated the privately-owned Cornwall Community Arena (aka Water Street Arena) on behalf of shareholders offered the arena to the city for $6,800, which was needed to cover the arena debt.

The arena produced a small profit for the fiscal year but that was the result of doing away with the manager’s position and cutting expenses to the bone.

The board felt it had two choices: sell the arena to the city or close it up.

Council didn’t exactly jump at the offer but in the end, by an 8-4 vote, agreed to purchase the building and property, valued at $40,000.

The city was told by the province that it would provide a $5,000 grant, reducing the city’s purchase price to $1,600.

Those who opposed the purchase argued that with the new community centre (Bob Turner Memorial Centre) the city didn’t need a second arena. Recreation director Bob Turner was criticized by some opponents for supporting the arena purchase.

Those who supported the arena pointed out that the community centre was built as a youth facility and the Water Street Arena was needed for other events such as junior and senior hockey and lacrosse. If the arena had been allowed to close down the Cornwall Royals would never

have advanced beyond the junior B ranks.

Ald. Doug Fawthrop, parks and recreation committee chair, said minor hockey was expected to grow to at least 1,000 participants in the 1961-62 season and this would take up a big chunk of ice time at the youth arena.

“The arena (WSA) is definitely needed for the winter sports program,” he said.

Later, under the guidance of parks and recreation committee chair Larry Keen Sr., the city undertook annual upgrades to keep the arena operating long past its expiration date, when it was replaced by the Benson Centre in 2011.

Not bad for a facility that came close to closing down 50 years earlier.

When the arena was built in 1936, shares were sold for $25. Nobody got rich owning Cornwall Community Arena shares. It had a few good years that produced a few dividend dollars but when the facility was sold to the city, a $25 share certificate and 25 cents got the holder a cup of coffee.

However, a framed certificate hanging on a family room wall does make for a great conversation piece.

Cletus is passing by Billy Bob’s hay barn one day when, through a gap in the door, he sees Billy Bob doing a slow and sensual striptease in front of an old John Deere tractor.
