Super-school funding approved Nick Seebruch
The report makes Roxmore the only public school in its boundary that will have a French immersion program, which has raised concerns for Rothwell-Osnabruck and Maxville Public School. UCDSB Board 1st Vice Chair Caroll Carkner said that she did not think those schools would be affected by this move. “The school board can’t control where parents choose to send their kids,” she said. Jennifer MacIsaac, a mother whose son attends Rothwell-Osnabruck and who was heavily involved in the fight to save that school’s high school program disagreed. “The board does control where parents send their kids by picking and choosing what schools get to offer French Immersion,” said MacIsaac to the Seaway News. “Especially when Maxville and Ingleside have been begging for French for years.” MacIsaac acknowledged the importance of the funding for Roxmore, but questioned the school board’s strategy of drawing more students out of their community of South Stormont. While this funding allows the UCDSB to move forward with two capital projects outlined in its final staff report, it seemingly looks over funding needed at Williamstown Public School in South Glengarry. AVONMORE, Ontario - Glengarry-PrescottRussell MPP Grant Crack announced that the Liberal govnernment will be investing $52.6 million in the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB). That $52 million will be used to fulfill the capital building plan outlined in the UCDSB’s final staff report that was passed on March 23. That plan calls for the closure of some schools, the expansion of others and the building of new ones. The announcement was made at Roxmore Public School in Avonmore on Wednesday, June 14. The lion’s share of that $52.6 million will be used to build a super-school in Cornwall at a cost of $39 million. While a date and site for the new construction project has yet to be named, the new school will be a grade 7 to 12 facility and will replace Cornwall’s secondary schools St. Lawrence Secondary and CCVS. Also announced was $2.6 million for Roxmore Public School. The school, which is currently at 100 percent capacity, will also be receiving students from North Stormont Public School, which will now be closing in accordance to the UCDSB final report.

ity and public education system in the region. “This funding will allow us to build our communities and bring necessary jobs to the area,” he said. “We can ensure the best quality of education and reduce the cost burden of empty spaces on the school board.”

On Saturday night, the Road 2 Musicfest held Cornwall’s first ever EDM Dance Party. With a DJ, light show and more fog than you can imagine, the first EDM event was a tremendous success. “We had a lot of teens come out for that,” said Bedard, who is also an organizer for Musicfest. “And it was the good crowd – they were having a blast out there.” Due to weather warnings, however, the event was cut short on Sunday. “We struggled with weather, and that’s the thing about doing outdoor festivals – we can’t control the weather,” said Bedard. With a date already chosen for next year, Mitchell and Bedard say they’re eager to see the event continue to grow. “We like to think outside the box when it comes to promoting,” said Mitchell. “We enjoy bringing some elements of the big city to our little city.”
CORNWALL, Ontario - Lamoureux Park was a hive of activity this weekend, as Road 2 Musicfest kicked off their inaugural event with some preCanada Day festivities. The four-day free admission festival was created as a way to promote Musicfest while providing something for folks of all ages. “Musicfest is a 19+ event, and we wanted to cater to the youth in our community,” said organizer, Jason Mitchell. “So we decided to have an event that would get the entire community involved.” Getting the party started on Thursday evening was Eagles Tribute Band, One of These Nights – back by popular demand after opening at last year’s Musicfest. CORNWALL, Ontario - Nick Haramis is a native of Cornwall, and he himself admits, that there are still many Haramises in the area, but his career path has lead him to the top of one of New York’s leading arts and culture magazines. At 34-years-ol Nick Haramis now finds himself as the new Editor of Interview a New York art magazine founded by Andy Warhol. Haramis explained in an interview with Seaway News that the path he took to get to where he is was a little unconventional. “I didn’t have a traditional journo tract,” he said. Haramis was a student at McGill and graduated as an English Lit. Major. “I knew I was good at writing, but I didn’t know what type of writer I wanted to be,” he said. “I loved reading mags as a kid and wanted
to a be a part of that scene.” Haramis got his start in New York as an intern at Blackbook, from there, he spent some time at Bullett and then he went to the New York times where he became Features Editor. He had some advice for people looking to get their own start in the industry that he learned from his own experience. “I never took “no” for an answer,” Haramis said. “I knew if I was ever going to stay here I was going to have to make do.” He gave an example of when his internship was coming to an end that he offered to stay on as Web Editor at Blackbook, despite not knowing anything about web coding, but it kept him in the door and in the industry. He took the reins at Interview in March. Interview was founded at the end of the 1960s and Haramis describes the publication as the “champions of the underdog in the world of art and fashion,” and as a magazine that celebrates both the high and the low.

CORNWALL, Ontario - One member of Cornwall City Council has said that there needs to be less faces around the table. Councillor Mark MacDonald made a motion during the meeting on June 12 that Administration should author a report on how many councillors the City of Cornwall is required by law to have. The motion was seconded by Councillor Bernadette Clement. “If the government only says we need three councillors then why would we have 10,” he said. When asked what the goal was of this report, Councillor MacDonald said that he felt the number of Councillors in the City of Cornwall reduced
efficiency and slowed City business. “I think there should only be six,” MacDonald told Seaway News. “It is about being an effective council. The more people on council the harder it is to get things through.” Councillor MacDonald pointed to the Port of Cornwall which he has been pushing to be developed for awhile. He pointed to the City of Niagra Falls as an example. Niagra Falls has eight councillors for a population of 88, 000 whereas Cornwall has 10 councillors for a population of around 46, 000. Some Councillors on Monday night expressed concerns about the number of committees that councillors are committed to attending. Councillor Denis Carr however said that committee attendace was already low.
“This has to be the year with the worst attendance at committees by council members,” he said. “Committee work is just as important as being on TV,” he asserted. Councillor Mark MacDonald told Seaway News that he felt some of the committees councillor’s sat on were not necessary. “Probably half of the committees we have we aren’t really even mandated to have,” he said, using the Canada Day committee as an example. At time of publishing Seaway News had not yet heard from the Clerk’s office on the current number of committees of council. Councillor MacDonald expects the report on his motion to comeback soon and hopes that any changes to municipal representation in Cornwall could be made before the next election.

LONG SAULT, Ontario - A new housing project in Long Sault will allow seniors to maintain their independence while providing an affordable alternative to retirement condominiums. To mark the grand opening of Mille Roches Senior Apartments, South Stormont Mayor, Jim Bancroft and MPP Jim McDonell were on hand to help cut the ribbon. Partners, Barry Latreille and Ewan St. Louis saw a need for a seniors’ apartment building, and no sooner built the facility to fill the community’s need. “It’s a rental for a reason; anybody can move in,” said St. Louis. “Almost anyone can afford it – if it was a condominium, that’s a lot more money.” The building has four floors, with the first catering strictly to handicap accessibility. However, St. Louis says that the other three floors are about 95 percent handicap-accessible. The building also features an open-concept common room on the main floor, leading out to

CORNWALL, Ontario - With the humidity rising and many now spending more time outside, it’s important to know how to spot ticks, and deal with them if you suspect you’ve been bitten. While there is no proven way to forecast higher-than-average tick population from year to year, recent surveillance studies have shown a steady increase in Lyme-carrying ticks along the St. Lawrence River and the 401. Last week, the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) announced the next step in the future of public education in our region. They announced $39 million for a new super school in Cornwall and $2.7 million for expansions at Roxmore Public School. Whether you agree with the idea of closing schools or not, these newer and upgraded facilities will be able to deliver quality education, but what does that mean for other schools, especially in rural areas? I was at the funding announcement at Roxmore, and UCDSB 1st Vice Chair Caroll Carkner said something to me that I have spent some time thinking about. “The school board can’t control where parents choose to send their kids,” is what she said. I think that’s wrong, the school board and the Ontario Ministry of Education absolutely control where parents send their kids. When one school receives more resources, whether it be better classrooms, smaller class sizes or better programs, then parents will choose to send
their children to that school over one that, while it might be closer, lacks those resources. That is the choice that parents have to make now. The final staff report passed by the UCDSB Board of Trustees on March 23, in addition to closing some schools and providing expansion funding for others, also re-drew some of the boundaries of the school board. This means that now, whereas before some parents who only had the choice to send their child to Rothwell-Osnabruck in Ingleside or who only had the choice to send their students to Maxville Public School in Maxville, can now choose to send their children to Roxmore. Roxmore need that funding to accommodate the influx of students coming from the closing North Stormont Public School. Roxmore is also being left as the only school in the region to have a French Immersion program. With assets like that, parents will likely choose Roxmore over a school in their community that does not have that kind of support from the school board. Parents who might have sent their students to Maxville Public School will now be sending their children to Roxmore instead.
Why are programs such as French Immersion not uniform across all UCDSB schools? Clearly it is an attractive program if it makes a school more valuable in the eyes of parents. Ultimately, what the whole Pupil Accommodation Review process has felt like the emphasis has been for school consolidation and not on community support. The UCDSB, like any school board has to look out for its own financial interests, but an important part of its general interests are its relationships with the communities under its
jurisdiction. The attitude of the Board that they must do what is best for the children under their care is correct, but the belief that closing the only school in a rural community is a part of that is flawed. The school board can have an impact on which schools parents send their children to. Rural schools should be given support by their board in recognition of the vital role that these schools play in the health and growth of the community that they are in.

Juliet, my wife and bowman manned a 5’ diameter golf umbrella. What a sail! With minimal effort, we ended up at the Blue Anchor Restaurant east of Glen Walter. Remembering Dick Legault Claude McIntosh ~ Macs Musings
DICK LEGAULT It wasn’t long before YBC bowlers from Cornwall started winning provincial and national championships. Legault knew that media coverage was important. He was a familiar early-morning visitor to the Standard-Freeholder sports department with results in hand. Then he would head over to the radio station. In the half century Legault dedicated himself to the YBC program, he served 25 years as zone representative. His groundwork with youth bowling was recognized by the national body which named him national program director of the year. He accepted the award with the usual Dick Legault humbleness and graciousness, pointing out that without all the committed volunteers in the city the program could not have succeeded, and he would not have his name added to the national honour role. In 1988 he was inducted into the Cornwall Sports Hall of Fame for both his work with the YBC program in the city and for his prowess on the lanes. After retiring from the bowling alley business in 1986 Legault remained involved with the YBC program until 2007. Dick Legault died last week at age 87. His DNA will forever remain with the YBC program. THIS WEEK IN 1962 Imperial Oil was

Back in the 1960s one of Cornwall’s top five-pin bowlers, a guy with a lifetime singles average of 252 and owner of a knock ‘em over 1085 triple that was pieced together with a three-string average of 362, realized that to keep the game rolling along in this city it needed to build interest among the younger generation. The old hands in the not-too-distant future would be leaving the game and it needed a feeder system to keep the numbers from shrinking. As the new manager of Olympia Bowl, he had a front-row view of the age factor. Legault would later become a partner in the Olympia business. It didn’t take Dick Legault long to come up with a blueprint for a foundation rebuild. It was the Youth Bowling Council (YBC), since rebranded as Youth Bowling Canada, a national program designed to get young people interested in bowling, and open the door for adult bowlers to pass along their skills. He went about laying the groundwork for a Cornwall Chapter. The YBC provincial program was in its second year when Legault brought Olympia Bowl into the fold in 1965 with the Cornwall Chapter. Even Legault and the dedicated volunteers he recruited from the adult bowling ranks at Olympia Bowl couldn’t have dreamed the success the program would enjoy. It soon spread from Olympia to Nativity Bowl and St. Columban’s bowling lanes. Hundreds of kids and teen-agers 5 to 19 signed up and stormed the lanes. The city bowling alleys became a beehive of activity on Saturday mornings from fall to spring. At 900 and counting, YBC became one of the most popular youth programs in the city. Olympia Bowl’s first year-end awards banquet was held at a crowded-to-capacity Nativity Hall. And why not? It was an inexpensive minor sport in which nobody sat on the bench, and a sport that didn’t cost taxpayers a penny to operate.

The North End Fastball League announced the first-team all-stars who would face Eddie Feigner (The King and His Court). They were Doug Taillon, Rusty Conway, Dalt Wells, Jim McDonald, Ray Payette, Ron Furlough, Lutt Bergeron Jr., Russ Harrington, Sandy O’Neill and Don Driscoll. Named to the second team were Wayne Froats, Larry Keen Jr., Mink Dewar, Bob Preston, Jack Lewis, Jack Murphy, Ray Tessier, Gerry Hughes, Linden Wells, Paul Lapointe and Bob Leger. ... Un élément valorisant pour les élèves était de voir Tristan, un ancien élève de l’EEC NotreDame animer les ateliers. Maintenant devenu un modèle pour eux, il leur a transmis son amour pour la science ainsi que la confiance qu’il est possible de poursuivre une carrière dans le domaine de la science. Tous les élèves participant à l’atelier ont travaillé directement avec les robots, en maniant
les codes pour que les robots effectuent différentes fonctions. Non seulement l’atelier vécu était en lien direct avec le programme de sciences de l’Ontario, les élèves se sont beaucoup amusés et ont prouvé que la manipulation de robots est possible dès le plus jeune âge! SLA Sclérose Latérale Amyotrophique Le mois de juin a marqué la cause de la Sclérose Latérale Amyotrophique également appelée la maladie de Lou Gherig ou la maladie des motoneurones. Le motoneurone, ou neurone moteur, est une cellule nerveuse qui est directement connectée à un muscle et commande sa contraction. Le diagnostic de la SLA est dévastateur. Environ 80 % des personnes atteintes de la SLA meurent dans les deux à cinq ans après avoir reçu le diagnostic. Actuellement, aucun remède efficace n’existe pour contrer cette terrible maladie. Le seul médicament approuvé, le riluzole, permet de prolonger la vie d’à peine quelques mois. C’est une maladie qui paralyse graduellement les personnes, car le cerveau n’est plus en mesure de communiquer avec les muscles du corps que nous pouvons normalement déplacer à notre guise. Au fil du temps, alors que les muscles du corps se détériorent, une personne vivant avec la SLA perd la
capacité de marcher, de parler, de manger, d’avaler et, éventuellement, de respirer. La SLA n’est pas causée par une seule chose. La SLA comporte plutôt plusieurs causes interdépendantes qui sont probablement fondées sur des modifications présentes dans les gènes et la possible contribution de facteurs environnementaux. Entre autres, le gène SARM1 chez l’humain est une cible de choix pour développer un médicament pour traiter la SLA. Il y a encore bien des obstacles à surmonter. La SLA est une maladie du vieillissement, qui apparaît habituellement vers l’âge de 55 ans chez l’humain. On ignore si un éventuel médicament serait efficace en le donnant lors de l’apparition des symptômes. Il reste beaucoup à faire puisque les études sont d’abord faites sur le ver C. elegans. On sait que le ver est malade puisque l’on induit la maladie. Chez l’humain, on ne sait pas qu’il est malade jusqu’à ce qu’il y ait l’apparition des symptômes. SPEC3255448

Les murales seront installées de façon permanente sur le terrain qui jouxte l’hôtel de ville. Fun on the farm APPLE HILL, Ontario - Ponies, and chickens, and goats! Oh my! Bee Meadow Farms held their second annual Open House this Saturday, June 17 with a slew of activities for the whole family. With food, farm games, pony rides, and the ever-popular chicken photoshoot, owner, Gordon Campbell says that the event has grown substantially since last year. “Last year we had over 100 people, but this year, we’ve had a much bigger turnout,” said Campbell.

And that’s not the only thing that’s not the only thing that’s grown. Campbell’s wife, Natalie Rowe, who oversees most of the farm’s day-to-day responsibilities, says that they’re currently sitting at a count of over 100 animals. “In the space of three years, we went from two dogs and a few cats to the current ridiculousness,” said Rowe. “To be totally honest, I’ve lost count.” The couple began adopting cats, and later took a pig named Ophelia under their wing, and soon found out that she was pregnant. “So, we ended up with seven pigs out of that adoption,” laughed Rowe.
