“It’s a competition that the restaurants really like,” said Brisson. “And the 200 people here tonight really love the idea of it too!”

Having sold just shy of 230 tickets, Brisson says that the event has done extremely well in its three-year history.

“This is the new one on the block, but it’s still quite powerful - we’re aiming to raise about $10,000 in one night,” said Brisson. “It’s one of the three that we’re pretty proud of.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Residents brought their appetites to the third annual Wing it for Kids Sake event, which took place this Friday, June 9 at the Royal Canadian Legion.

The newest of Big Brothers Big Sisters’ three signature events, Executive Director Amanda Brisson says that she’s learned something over the years about Cornwallites : they love food.

“If you can do a food fundraiser, you’re golden,” laughed Brisson.

CORNWALL, Ontario - When Beverly Hincks’ marriage came to an end, she searched for support, but found there was no formal system in place in the region for people in her position.

After six months, she found DivorceCare, a support programs for those dealing with divorce

and separation.

She began attending classes in St. Anne-deBellevue, QC, but wanted to bring the program to her own area.

Hincks said that she began to heal once she started attending these meetings.

“There is comfort in sitting next to someone who is having the same feelings as you,” she said.

“I don’t think there is any right time to start. As

soon as this trauma hits you, you need help.”

The program is split into 13 weekly meetings where participants learn to deal with the pain they are feeling.

The support group is open to all men and women who are going through separation or divorce regardless of religious affiliation.

Hincks said that what drew her to the program was the videos.

Each session begins with a 30 to 40 minute video interview of someone going through that step in the program.

“I remember sitting there thinking, “oh my god, I’m not crazy” and that is very comforting,” she explained.

The first meeting was on Tuesday, June 13, but participants are welcomed to start at any point in the program.

The program is facilitated by Lorna Grant, a retired Director of Nursing from St. Lawrence College.

Beverly Hincks found support she needed in the DivorceCare program after her marriage ended.

Sessions are held every Tuesday from 1 p.m. to 9 p.m. at St. Andrews United Church in Williamstown.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Students of Rob Butler’s grade 10 Civics class at Holy Trinity got a chance to see what municipal council is all about.

They elected a council of their own, appointed administration officials and took over the City of Cornwall Council Chambers on Wednesday, June 7 for a mock council meeting.

Councillor Maurice Dupelle, who sits on the Cornwall Youth Advisory Committe and who’s son is in the class helped make the field trip happen and City of Cornwall Clerk Manon Levesque organized and led the students through much of the meeting.

The students ran through a full mock council meeting from the moment of silence to the motion to adjourn.

Levesque prepared the agenda for the council which included real-life decisions from past council meetings so that the students got as close a feel to the real thing as possible.

Butler praised the efforts of the school and the students that made this exercise possible.

“This happened very quickly and I appreciate the efforts of the school to get this done,” he said. “I was encouraged by the participation and effort by everyone involved.”

Maurice Dupelle expressed his hope that this was the first of such exercises.

“We need to reach out to more schools and more youths,” he said.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH)’s new Community Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH) Centre is starting a new project, EMBRACE, with the goal of supporting those who are supporting loved ones struggling with addiction and mental health issues.

On June 17 from 9 a.m. until 12 p.m. caregivers are being invited to the CAMH at 850 McConnell Avenue in Cornwall to tell their stories and share their ideas express their concerns and ideas for what would make their lives easier.

“We are planning to meet with over 200 family caregivers across Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry and Akwesasne by the end of the summer,” said Marilyn Macaulay, a caregiver representative to the EMBRACE Project.“We want to hear from these family caregivers how communication with doctors, nurse, therapists, counsellors and other staff can be improved, what information and training the family caregivers need to help them care for their loved one and their ideas on how we can improve the interaction between the family caregivers and the addiction and mental health system.”

Neil Simon hit comedy ‘Barefoot in the Park’ opens Playhouse summer Handout from Upper Canada Playhouse

SOUTH DUNDAS, Ontario - Upper Canada Playhouse opens its 2017 summer season with Barefoot in the Park, Neil Simon’s perennially popular 1960’s comedy about love and marriage playing June 8 through July 2 at the equally popular Morrisburg theatre. The play has been an audience favourite at theatres worldwide for decades and was also made into a movie starring a young Jane Fonda and Robert Redford early in their careers.

Like all great stories, it’s as timely and entertaining as ever as audiences join newlyweds Corie and Paul Bratter in the cramped tiny apartment they rent on the top floor of a New York brownstone. A mere six days after the wedding, the honeymoon is over and the wheels appear to be coming off the marriage.

They soon find that all those wonderful

things they liked about each other that brought them together will soon be matched by the many differences that may drive them apart.

Corie is the impulsive and incurable romantic while Paul is more practical and focused on starting his law career.

Director Donnie Bowes has assembled a sterling cast of experienced and talented actors for this classic comedy. CORNWALL, Ontario - Having received a wonderful response at their soft opening just two short weeks ago, the Kinsmen Farmers’ Market had their official grand opening this Sunday, June 11. Vendors, club members, and local politicians all came out in support of the latest addition to the local health food scene, which will be open in the St. Lawrence College parking lot every Sunday from 11-3. With a fair assortment of local vendors, Cornwall Kinsmen Club House Director, Monte Yancey says that they’re hoping to offer even more. Using a list of ingredients found within the market, club members will be serving up some delicious creations.

“We’ve added a few things since the soft opening,”

said Yancey. “Mainly, the food court area, where people can actually come down and have lunch before their shopping.”

Folks had some pretty solid selection today, with Thai and Mexican food vendors, as well as the Kinsmen Club BBQ. Yancey says the next exciting part of the Kinsmen Market is right around the corner.

“We’re so excited to see the produce start coming in,” said Yancey. “When we started this, we wanted to know what the vendors wanted. The one thing they were really adamant about is they didn’t want an early start.”

Yancey said it didn’t take long to find out why.

“When they were taking stuff out, there was still dew on the lettuce,” said Yancey. “They’re picking it that morning - it’s that fresh.”

The winning student team will win $500, and the winning business team also gets $500. But if a business chooses to man its team with students, the young people will get the prize money.

“All the money stays in the community,” said Lutz.

I went and saw Wonder Woman starring Gal Gadot last week. All my life I’ve been a fan of comics and comic book movies. For me, this is a great time to be alive.

With their latest installment to the genre however, they have completely set themselves a new, higher standard in terms of film quality. The film has excellent cinematics, storytelling and acting.

It has also drawn a lot of attention; unfortunately the reason for some of that attention is because it is a film directed by a woman with a woman in the lead role.

Some have been astounded that a film that’s not only directed by a woman, but also starring a woman could be such a critical and box office success.

We need to get beyond the point where we find the success of a movie helmed by a woman as something astounding or extraordinary.

While watching the conversation around this movie, I’ve seen some point to the comic book movies of Catwoman (2004) and Elektra (2005) as box office and critical failures which to them make Wonder Woman such an amazing success.

If anything, what Wonder Woman proves is that comic book movies have come a long way as a whole since the early 2000s. While Catwoman and Elektra did happen to feature female leads and were bad so were Daredevil, Superman Returns, Green Lantern, Ghost Rider and of course Batman: Forever.

Not just Hollywood, but also moviegoers need to have faith in female leads and directors.

Their skill determines their success and the same goes for their male counter parts.

Will life ever return to normal in Afghanistan?

In my opinion, Afghanistan will function normally when corruption, distrust and tribal divide is ended.

Of course, we should also not forget about the thriving opium trade.

In the past many Western nations have sunk million of dollars in Afghanistan to bring political stability and peace in the troubled country.

Nothing seems to have worked so far.

Terror in Kabul continues.

Just recently, a sewage tanker loaded with explosives went off in the heart of Kabul,

regarded by many as the safest place in the country, killing around 100 people and injuring hundreds more among them women and young children and innocent people.

Many embassies, including that of Canada, were damaged by the gigantic bomb blast.

No one can explain how this co8uld have happened.

Without a concerted effort by Afghanistan with support of caring nations around the world, insurgency is not going to be defeated.

Since the late 1970s, Afghanistan has suffered continuous and brutal civil wars in addition to foreign interventions in the form of the 1979 Soviet interventions and the recent 2001 U.S.-led invasion that toppled the Taliban government.

And since the fall of the Taliban, adherents of

the hard-line Islamic movement have re-grouped and re-organized financed by opium money.

Canadians once operated in one of the world’s most-dangerous country.

Many Canadian lives have been lost in the fight against terrorism.

But, then the question to ask is how long the Western nations can stay in Afghanistan with massive and never ending corruption so rife in the country?

America is still considering sending more troops to Afghanistan.

That country’s insurgency is fuelled by drugs.

Afghanistan’s drug industry makes up around 60 per cent of the economy.

This trade has boomed since the fall of the Taliban and the country supplies 93 per cent of

the world’s opium, the raw ingredient of heroin.

Let there be no mistake that it is the drug trade that is helping to fuel the Taliban.

It is estimated Afghanistan receives around $100 million from this trade.

Now al-Qaeda groups and also a growing number of Islamic State fighters have joined in the fight.

This has brought chaos in the country and stability is non existence.

There is no chance of any peace agreements working in the region.

Terrorism targets all countries and people of all races.

Afghanistan is in a real mess.

Military solutions have done little to improve the situation.

letter to the editor Dear Sir: In his letter to the Editor on May 31st, Harry Valentine mocks those who favour the fluoridation of municipal water, by finding humour in the idea that we could perhaps give our children tea that the American Food and Drug Administration has identified as containing elevated levels of

fluoride.

Many would think it disgusting to try to make fun of giving children contaminated tea. Those who share his humour should remember it the next time they take a child to the dentist.

“It’s now murder. We will leave no stone unturned in our search to find the men who did this,” an OPP inspector announced.

They were never found. The murder of a rookie cop has become the coldest of cold cases.

At the time, investigators believed the two were members of a gang from the area tied to a series of armed robberies in Dundas County. Pitt’s patrol car was found abandoned just north of Iroquois the afternoon he was shot. Two stolen vehicles used in robberies had been abandoned in the same area. And sawed off shotguns stolen in Brockville were discarded in the same area.

Several other “solid leads” soon turned cold.

Investigators went to Ogdensburg, N.Y. to interview two Ontario teen-agers arrested by State Police for stealing cars in St. Lawrence County.

They were cleared.

Police looked at a possible link to the brutal murder of a 22-year-old farmer’s wife one mile from Chesterville a month earlier. While the victim had been sexually assaulted and the battered body found outside the home, there was evidence that some activity took place inside the farm house. One theory was that it started out as a robbery. Her husband was at a sale in Chesterville on the evening of the murder. Robbers may have believed he had a large sum of money in the house. The case has never been solved.

On Sept. 25 Morrisburg said farewell to a courageous cop. It was the first and only civic funeral in the town’s history. Hundreds of people, not just from Morrisburg but across the United Counties, lined the streets from the funeral home to a

crowded Morrisburg United Church. He was laid to rest in Fairview Cemetery.

A fund set up to help the grieving widow and her sons topped $5,000 ($44,000 today). She was expected to be eligible for a $75 month widow’s pension with another $25 a month for each son.

The town council voted to pay for the funeral and give Margaret Pitt $200. Margaret and her sons would later return to Scotland.

Over the years OPP cold case investigators returned to the file but with the same results. The men who killed Const. Pitt got away with murder.

It is one of the few unsolved murders of an Ontario police officer.

TRIVIA ANSWER Cy Denneny, who was born in Farran’s Point, Dec. 23, 1891, was a fivetime Stanley Cup winner, four as a left winger with the Ottawa Senators and once as coach of the Boston Bruins. He played 11 seasons with the NHL Senators and spent his 12th and final NHL season (1929) with the Bruins, coaching the club and filling in as a player. He was inducted into the Hockey Hall of Fame in 1969.

It was just an hour or so shy of sunrise when 35-year-old Const. Ronald Pitt of the Morrisburg police department spotted two men in a car he believed was stolen.

After a short chase he managed to block the vehicle and its two occupants on Riverside Drive in front of Parker Locke’s house. As Pitt, just two months on the job, exited his patrol car he was met with a burst of gun fire. He was hit by three bullets as he sought cover behind a tree on the lawn. One bullet passed through his chest, one lodged in his back and another grazed a finger.

During the short but wild gun battle, Pitt managed to unload his service revolver but there was no evidence that either suspect was hit. The two men fled in Pitt’s patrol car, a 1957 grey Ford, with the semi-conscious officer sprawled in a growing pool of blood on the driveway.

Pitt was treated at the scene by Dr. C. A. Louden before being transported to Cornwall General Hospital. A few hours later an RCAF helicopter, which landed at the Athletic Grounds, transported the badly injured officer to Montreal Neurological Institute.

It was Aug. 24, 1957.

The critically injured Pitt died 30 days later, at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 23 at the Montreal hospital, with his wife, Margaret, who travelled from Scotland, at his bedside. One of the bullets had shattered part of his spinal cord, leaving him paralyzed from the waist down.

Margaret and the couple’s two sons, Ron Jr., 7, and Ian, 3, were planning to join Pitt in Canada before Christmas. He had come to Canada in the

CORNWALL, Ontario - Those who steal shopping carts could soon be faced with a warning from police and retailers might barr them from coming to their store all together.

The City has been conferring with local businesses over the past several months to find an acceptable solution for all parties.

“The retailers recognize that there is an issue but feel that it is theft and that it is a policing matter,” reads a report written by City Administration and presented to Council. “The police in turn have indicated that such issues are less urgent and that there are limited staff resources to enforce such theft and proof of culpability may be challenging.”

Together, the City and the local retailers formulated a five step plan to deal with the issue.

The City will be keeping tabs on where shopping carts are being abandoned in the City and provide those locations to retailers so they can collect them. Additionally, the City will be making a web page on their site where residents can report abandoned shopping carts.

For their part, retailers will be creating more signage in their stores and police will be

providing warnings to offenders they see taking carts off of store properties.

The City will also be working with retailers to provide low cost personal grocery buggies to be sold in stores in hopes to deter people from taking carts.

In March, City of Cornwall Supervisor of Bylaw Enforcement, Christopher Rogers acknowledged that some took carts because it was their only option to get their groceries home.

“We know that poverty is part of the equation,” said Rogers. “To ignore this reality would be insensitive to those who are less fortunate in our community.”

City of Cornwall General Manager Mark Boileau has said that since they have started monitoring this issue, the numbers of shopping carts on the streets has declined. He stated that when they started there were 50 on the street, then 40 and now 30.

La CNS célèbre un autre don de terre forestière Communiqé de presse de la CNS NORD DUNDAS, Ontario - La famille Oschmann a récemment donné à la Conservation de la Nation Sud (CNS) une forêt de 18 acres située près d’Ormond afin qu’elle soit préservée pour les générations à venir.

La forêt située dans la municipalité de North Dundas a officiellement été intégrée au groupe de terres publiques de la CNS lors d’une cérémonie qui a eu lieu sur place le samedi 3 juin. L’événement a été marqué par quelques mots de la famille Oschmann, la coupe du ruban, une visite de la propriété, des rafraichissements et un gâteau.

La forêt a été donnée en mémoire de Gertrude Oschmann. Selon sa famille, Gertude était une adepte de plein air qui a laissé sa trace dans la forêt

‘Amis de la santé cognitive’ est une initiative de la Société Alzheimer du Canada et du gouvernement du Canada inspiré du programme «Dementia Friends» (Angleterre) et d’un programme semblable au Japon.

Le programme permet de mieux comprendre les conséquences des maladies cognitives au quotidien et les gestes concrets que nous pouvons poser pour aider les personnes atteintes à rester dans leur milieu

À l’écoute des aidants naturels CORNWALL (Ontario) – Le Centre communautaire de santé mentale et de dépendances de l’Hôpital communautaire de Cornwall (HCC) amorce un nouveau projet, J’embarque, qui a pour but de soutenir les gens qui appuient un proche luttant contre des problèmes de dépendance et de santé mentale.

Le 17 juin, de 9 h à 12 h, les aidants naturels sont invités au CAMH, situé au 850, avenue McConnell, à Cornwall, afin de raconter leur histoire et de transmettre leurs idées sur les éléments qui leur simplifieraient la vie. « D’ici la fin de l’été, nous prévoyons rencontrer plus de 200 aidants naturels de l’ensemble de Stormont, Dundas et Glengarry ainsi que d’Akwesasne, a dit Marilyn Macaulay, une représentante des aidants naturels pour le projet J’embarque. Nous voulons entendre le point de vue de ces aidants sur les façons d’améliorer la communication avec les médecins, les infirmières, les thérapeutes, les conseillers et les autres membres du personnel, connaître les renseignements et la formation dont ces aidants ont besoin pour les aider à s’occuper d’un proche, et enfin, obtenir leurs idées sur les moyens d’améliorer l’interaction entre les aidants naturels et le système de santé mentale et de traitement des dépendances. » Le projet J’embarque vise principalement à susciter de l’espoir pour les aidants naturels en sensibilisant les gens, en créant des liens et en établissant des groupes de soutien. Il a aussi pour objectif de réduire le stress familial, de mettre en place un centre de ressources pour les familles afin de cerner les besoins des aidants naturels et de les faire participer aux décisions sur les soins. « Nous croyons que ces groupes de discussion et les entrevues individuelles permettront d’améliorer la communication bilatérale entre les aidants naturels et les fournisseurs qui travaillent dans le système de santé mentale et de traitement des dépendances, a dit la vice-présidente des Programmes communautaires de l’HCC, Christine Penney. Cette démarche aura un effet positif sur les aidants naturels de notre communauté, de notre région et au-delà. The RPN participates in the development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation of programs and services for individuals, families and the community, functioning interdependently with the other members of the Inter-professional team within a health promotion framework.

Qualifications: Thorough knowledge of and proficiency in current nursing and practices of community-based care. Three to five years experience in a community setting. Current registration with the College of Nurses of Ontario. Experience in program development, implementation, monitoring and evaluation is an asset. Demonstrated ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced, multi-professional team environment with both medical and non-medical personnel. Sensitivity to the needs of the disadvantaged and experience with a diverse populations. Strong interpersonal and communication skills are required.

Proficiency in working in a computerized environment is required and experience working with electronic client records would be considered a strong asset.

Big milestone for local church The current building is a solid stone structure, built to withstand the years. With arcades, pillars, and a sprawling sanctuary designed in the shape of a cross, the cathedral is richly adorned with intricate stained glass. A far cry from its humble beginnings over two centuries ago.

“One of the most important reasons we celebrate these milestones is to say ‘we’re here,’ and continue that which those people started a long time ago,” said Rev. Johnston. “I think it really becomes an obligation that we honour them by keeping the spirit alive as much as possible.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - St. John’s Presbyterian Church will celebrate a milestone 230 years in June.

The current Second Street building is the third building to house the congregation of St. John’s, having been dedicated in 1888. The original building was a modest log structure, and

was located where the Bank of Montreal now stands.

“It’s very humbling to think that we are sharing the space that thousands of people have used for over two centuries,” said Rev. Ian Johnston.

Originally referred to as the Presbyterian Meeting House, the cornerstone of the present building was laid in 1888, officially opened on March 17, 1889.

Official celebrations kicked off on Sunday, May 28 with an organ recital, and will continue until the June 11 anniversary service, featuring former associate minister, Dr. Jonathan Dent, who will be preaching the service.

“230 years is something that we can only blink our eyes and wonder ‘what is this all about?’ and ‘how did they do it?’” said Johnston.
