CORNWALL, Ontario - Three-year old Kohen Paschek has faced tough adversity at his young age. Two years ago, he was diagnosed with a rare brain tumor.

He is one of only 15 children in the world right now to have had this tumor and, doctors said that if removed, there would still be a 98 percent chance of the tumor recurring.

Now, it has been a little over a year since Kohen has finished his treatment and his doctors say that there is no evidence of disease and that the tumor bed is reducing in size.

Additionally, just in the past year, advances have been made in Kohen’s type of cancer.

us to have Kohen’s tumor for research because it is so rare,” said Kohen’s mom Jessie.

Thanks to the research done by the Arthur & Sonia Labatt Research Centre in Toronto on his own tumor, doctors have raised Kohen’s survival chance from 2 percent to 50 percent. However, if the cancer returns he is out of treatment options, which is why his mother Jessie is working so hard to raise funds for this valuable research.

With things looking up, Kohen is ready to start at a Montesorri pre-school, and will soon be able to play sports.

Doctors say that he shows no signs developmental delays because of the brain tumor, although he does have to be a little careful when taking bumps on the head, because there is a gap in his skull where the tumor used to be, but doctors say that gap is shrinking.

Kohen’s mom Jessie has organized a few upcoming fundraisers in order to raise money for vital research into brain tumors.

“A lot of people don’t know, but brain tumors have overtaken Leukemia as the leading cause of cancer-related death in children,” she said.

“Yet only three percent of the Canadian government funding goes towards that research.”

South Stormont community rallies in response to R-O decision Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

LONG SAULT, Ontario - The South Stormont community gathered on Tuesday evening to discuss their next steps after the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) narrowly voted in favour of closing the community’s only high school.

Teri-Lynn Beckstead, one of the driving forces behind the Save Rothwell-Osnabruck campaign outlined the situation for the crowd gathered at the South Stormont Community Centre.

“Even though we lost the vote to save R-O by the vote of one trustee, we would need three to flip to our side to get that vote overturned,” Beckstead explained in response to a question from the crowd. “Our best option now is to take this to the province..”

She explained now how they hoped to encourage the province to review the Pupil Accommodation Review process.

The aim is to gather a petition of signatures from at least 30 percent of the parents who have children at Rothwell-Osnabruck. That 30 percent threshold if met is the minimum requirement to have the Ministry of Education consider whether a review is warranted.

“We probably have at least that many here tonight,” she said. “I plan on taking this petition door-to-door. The more signatures we get, the harder it will be to ignore our request for a review.”

A member of the crowd asked that if the process is reviewed, if that will mean the decision is overturned. While the review from the Ministry cannot overturn any school board decision, it can make recommendations on changes it thinks should be made.

One reason that supporters of R-O feel like a review is necessary, is because they feel that the UCDSB trustees were working with incorrect information, and not taking the whole picture into account.

The Board of Trustees voted to close R-O because according to the staff report, the school was 65 percent empty with 235 empty spaces.

Beckstead explained how this information was incorrect, and that the truth was that R-O Secondary is 79.2 percent full with only 48 empty spaces.

“I’ve done the math over and over again,” said Beckstead. “But they (the school board) did not want to listen.”

She then explained the plan that the Save Rothwell-Osnabruck committee presented to the school board to fill those empty 48 seats to

capacity. The Save R-O group wanted the school to have French Immersion reintroduced to encourage students from South Stormont’s other elementary school, Longue Sault Public School (which does have a French Immersion program) to go to the high school in their township to continue their education.

While Longue Sault Public was originally scheduled for closure in the school board’s initial draft report, it was ultimately spared in the final vote on March 23.

However, Beckstead explained that if R-O’s secondary school program is closed, it could threaten Longue Sault.

“Longue Sault Public was originally scheduled for closure,” she said. “When R-O Secondary is closed how do you think they are going to want to fill that suddenly vacant space.”

Beckstead told the crowd that the next time the closure and consolidation issue is visited by the UCDSB they could leave South Stormont with one school in just one of their communities.

Petitions to send to the Ministry of Education are available at the Foodland in Ingleside and at the South Stormont Township Hall in Long Sault. The petition’s organizers hope to have the petition sent off by the end of this coming weekend, Sunday, April 9.

ALEXANDRIA, Ontario - The Province of Ontario has released the 2016 Sunshine List. The list names members of Ontario’s public sector who made more than $100, 000 in 2016.

Among the names of those who made the Sunshine List for 2016 are police officers who had been suspended with pay, including one member of the SD&G OPP detachment’s Alexandria office.

Luanne MacDonald was suspended July 22, 2014 when she and fellow officer John Bernard were arrested. She was charged with three counts of breach of trust by an officer, obstruction of justice, one count each of fraud, voyeurism, distribution of voyeurism material and theft of communications.

It was claimed that Cst. MacDonald had filmed a woman naked and distributed the recording.

It was alleged that the incidents occurred between November 2011 and July 2014.

On Jan. 16 of this year, MacDonald pleaded guilty to obstruction of justice.

In 2016, which was her second full year on paid suspension, MacDonald still made $100, 626.82 according to the Sunshine List.

MacDonald resigned from the OPP before being sentenced on March 3.

She was an 11-year active veteran police officer.

MacDonald was handed a 15 month conditional sentence on March 3 including 10 months of house arrest.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Major Anthony “Tony” Johnson of the Royal Canadian Air Force was invited by the City of Cornwall to sign the City’s Book of Recognition at the council meeting on Monday, April 10.

A native of Cornwall and a graduate of St. Joseph’s Secondary School, Major Johnson was recognized by the United States government for his three years of service in Miami while he was on exchange there.

In 2016 U.S. Secretary of Defense Ashton Carter and Admiral Kurt W. Todd commander of the U.S. Southern Command honoured Johnson with the Defense Meritous Service Medal.

“The distinctive accomplishments of Major Johnson reflects credit upon himself, the Canadian Armed Forces, and the department of defense,” said Todd.

Major Johnson also served two tours of duty in Afghanistan.

Johnson told Cornwall Council that he felt gratitude at being recognized and that like them, he was a public servant.

“What we have common in this room is that

we serve the public and we do it of our own accord as volunteers,” he said. “I think we all know what its like to sacrifice family time for committments to the public. I wear a uniform and you folks don’t but I think we all deserve recognition from ourselves and the general public.”

Councillor David Murphy, who knew Major Johnson as he was growing up said he knew he was destined for the military.

“We knew where you were headed early on because it was a passion of yours from day one,” said Murphy. “You do a job a not a lot of people can do, and we thank you for that.”

Major Johnson said that he would not be the person that he is if he had not grown up in Cornwall.

“I’m very proud of Cornwall its a great place to grow up,” he said.

Rick Shaver recognised by Ontario Community Newspaper Association TORONTO, Ontario - On Friday night in Toronto at the Ontario Community Newspaper Association annual BCN Awards Gala, Rick was presented with one of the premier association recognition awards for his work in his community and the work the newspaper does .

The Award is coordinated by the OCNF, with generous support of the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC). Together, they are committed to recognizing dedicated newspaper employees who are constantly making a difference within their communities.

“I am very honored to have received this award” said Shaver “ the work I do in the community is to make it a better place to live, to build a stronger foundation for growth and for the next generation and to create a great home for those that live here. None of this would be possible if not for my great family, supportive friends and associations and my staff who works with me daily on helping the community.”

In 1985, Rick Shaver co-founded the Cornwall Seaway News with Dick Aubry and ensured the community newspaper remained just that – a very large part of its community.

Despite changes in technology and the way readers receive their news, Rick’s commitment to the product has not changed. He continues to build relationships, encourages his staff to do the same, and provides the community with a gateway to share their stories.

Rick has a contagious positive energy and grin to go along with it. He is a recognized voice within the Cornwall community and frequently approached by leaders of organizations looking for help.

While Cornwall Seaway News prints ads and publishes editorials to help various organizations, Rick chooses to be a little more hands-on.

He has been nicknamed the “Godfather of Pizza” and continues to work with the Kinsmen Club of Cornwall’s Annual Pizza Party, which pits eight local restaurants against each other in a friendly competition to discover Cornwall’s best pizza.

He also helps with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of Cornwall’s Italian Night, which typically sells out and attracts roughly 300 guests each year to raises money for those affected by MS. Rick’s close ties with Big Brothers Big Sisters has seen him participate in bowl-a-thons, and he continues to support the Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall and the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences. He was recognized for his tremendous volunteer contributions with a Queen’s Diamond Jubilee in 2012.

He has served the Ontario Community Newspapers Association’s board of directors for 16 years, acting as President in 2007 and lending his knowledge and passion for the industry.

He somehow finds the time to sit on many other boards, including Cornwall and the Counties Community Futures Development Corporation and the Kinsmen Club of Cornwall, of which he has served as President and Chairman of many community events for a combined total of 25 years. Not to mention the number of organizations he has helped in the past, including the Canadian Community Newspapers Association, Cornwall Chamber of Commerce in various roles for 21 years; the Cornwall Carbon Reduction Committee and the Agapè Food Bank.

recognize him with the 2016 IBC Community Award in Memory of Mary Knowles. Mary Knowles was a dedicated newspaper employee and active community member who died from breast cancer in 1996.

Rick accepted his award during the BNC Awards Gala on Friday, April 7 at the Toronto Airport Marriott Hotel.

Did we ever really have a choice?

If someone offered to you a kick in the pants, and the only alternative was no kick in the pants, then you aren’t really left with that many options are you? Is that even really a choice?

That was basically the decisions open to Cornwall City Council during this Ranked Ballot process.

As I’ve explained in previous columns, Ranked Ballot voting is a preferable method over our current First Past the Post system in theory.

In theory, Ranked Ballot is fairly straightforward. If there are five people running for one elected position, voters rank their preferred candidates from one to five, the person with the most votes wins the job. The winner of the election wasn’t the winner’s first choice, then maybe they were their second, or third. It encourages politicians to appeal to a broad a base as possible rather than extremes.

In more complex elections, with many seats and many candidates, it is still fairly straightforward. Voters again rank their preferences and the candidates ranked #1 the least amount of times are eliminated.

However, the process that was presented to council by the Provincial government was very narrow, complex and in my opinion discouraged municipalities from considering alternatives to the status quo.

“I started out being very proud of the fact that we were one of the few municipalities that decided to have this conversation,” Councillor Bernadette Clement explained at the Council meeting. “What we got was a serviceable presentation, but it focused on things like the technicalities and cost. (This proposal) dies because we couldn’t explain why there were benefits involved in this although the point of this was to ensure that everyone who sits at this table gets the most support from the community.”

Councillor Claude McIntosh said that the issues heard most often in public consultations was that people wanted them to work on the reasons behind reduced voter turnout.

“Its like trying to get kids to participate,” he lamented. “Our votes don’t count is the common refrain.”

Councillor McIntosh felt that if people wanted Ranked Ballot voting, then the proposal should be brought to a referendum and that if it was implemented by council now, it would

actually hurt the voter turnout in the next election rather than help.

I agree with him on both counts. The citizens of Cornwall should be the ones who decide how they vote when this issue comes up. Also, I agree that this version of Ranked Balloting at least will discourage voter participation.

This version of Ranked Ballot voting put forward by the province seems almost designed to be rejected by municipalities. Maybe the

province feels it is too much effort to change the way citizens of municipalities vote. Or maybe they want to discourage the idea in case it catches on.

Either way, electoral reform is an issue that should be re-visited regularly. It has been too long since we have reviewed our democracy at all levels and it is time that it is given a proper going over and all practices for exercising this fundamental right should be on the table.

community…that is why we choose to live here, educate our children here and keep our business here. Rothwell Osnabruck is not a faceless pile of steel and concrete – it is a place in which you are nurtured and valued as an individual.

Our high school is both financially and academically viable and our students should have the right to be educated in their community… along with being able to participate in sports and after school employment if they choose.

Bussing our children out of the community to an even more remote facility just does not make any sense whatsoever. That money

would be better spent keeping our school open.

In closing I would like to propose you call a meeting, have a good hard look at all of the facts that have been provided to you and have the courage and decency to admit that you based your previous decision on flawed and incorrect information. Then make the only decision that is right for our students…reverse the decision to close RO and recover some valuable support that you are indeed sorely lacking at this point in time.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR After attending an information meeting at the South Stormont Township Office last evening I can’t help but be impressed by the passion and fortitude of the presenter, Teri-Lynn CritesBeckstead. She stated the facts and fielded questions like a pro along with Jen MacIsaac. I am sure there are a lot of behind the scenes support for these two dynamos but they are the face of the fight to save Rothwell Osnabruck High School. I was also impressed by the huge turnout for the event and everyone came away with a renewed sense of purpose in doing all we can to influence the reversal of the decision to close our high school.

Based on the facts RO should never have been on the chopping block in the first place… being at 79.2% capacity with 48 empty student spaces should have given it a pass. The fact that many of the trustees never bothered to visit our school let alone even know its location speaks volumes about their credentials or lack thereof. Of course having an ulterior agenda does not have a place in this decision…the facts do!

It seems province-wide our rural schools are under attack and we must put a stop to this madness before it is too late. Those of us in rural communities take pride in being part our

When the Second World War ended, Jessie Boyd was a war widow with two young children and not much in the way of financial support. She moved to Cornwall and got into the beauty salon business with a single shop on lower Pitt Street.

Within a few years, she had four shops on the go.

She even had her own hairdressing show on CJSS TV. She branched out into other local business ventures and invested in real estate. She became one of the city’s most successful women entrepreneurs. She was a quiet philanthropists who supported many charitable causes. Four years ago she wrote her memoirs “Still Kicking Just Not As High”. The proceeds went to World Vision.

Sister Lucy Chretien, principal of Nativity Separate School in the heart of East Cornwall, didn’t have anything wrong with her vision but she was becoming accustomed to seeing double.

So it was in the 1967-68 school year when the school had 10 sets of twins among its 535 kindergarten to Grade 6 students. Two sets of twins were from the same family.

Two years earlier, the school had 12 sets of twins.

Sister Chretien believed that to be a record for a city school.

Identification, at least at the start of the school year, was clouded by identical school uniforms.

“Some (of the twins) are very confusing,”Sister Chretien told The Standard-Freeholder. “Teachers have to sit them apart to be able to tell one from the other.”

It was an unexplained phenomenon. All but one set lived south of Montreal Road between Marborough Street and McConnell Avenue. The other set lived on Alice Street just north of Montreal Road. Two sets of twins were McConnell South neighbours. Perhaps the odds were increased because of large families in east Cornwall. It was not uncommon for an east end family to have seven or eight children. This was a time when Nativity Church had 1,300 families and 6,000 parishioners. And a few blocks away was another Roman Catholic church with a large flock.

On hand for special gardening seminars was Mark Cullen, a third generation professional gardener and a television gardening expert.

“The first thing you’re going to want to do this season is get on the lawn,” said Cullen.

“You’re going to want to rake it, feed it with Golfgreen Iron Plus lawn fertilizer and then start cutting it at a high level.”

Cullen gave two presentations at the show, and was available at the Fines Home Hardware booth to answer gardening questions.

This is the Home & Leisure Show’s Eleventh year.

“The Chamber has worked with Fines Home Hardware to offer this year’s grand prize, a $5, 000.00 outdoor treasure trove that includes a riding lawn mower, a fabulous Traeger Grill,

WILLIAMSTOWN, Ontario - Regiment and church gathered at St. Andrew’s United Church in honour of the 100th anniversary of Vimy Ridge.

The first instance where all four divisions of the Canadian Expeditionary Force fought together, the battle came to represent national success and sacrifice. Falling on Palm Sunday, the service focused heavily on the theme of sacrifice in the Bible, as well as in battle.

“This is a sacred space that has that military connection – it was built by loyalists, as well as a number of the Nor ’Westers,” said Rev. Andrea Harrison. “On this Sunday, we remember that 100 years ago, at 5:30 in the morning, our soldiers went knowingly into an arena of death,” Before kids went off to Sunday School, Rev. Harrison turned their attention to he Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry Highlanders, who were seated behind them asking those who had been

deployed in war or peace keeping missions to stand.

‘Why is mom standing?’ asked one child. The congregation laughed, and Rev. Harrison explained that ‘mom went to Afghanistan before you were born.’

Curator of the SD&G Highlanders Museum, Leon Chamois was also in attendance, presenting several garments which would have been worn at Vimy Ridge, including a woolen service dress tunic, cotton webbing, as well as a great deal of knowledge.

Also present was Master Warrant Officer Richard Corneau from Kingston, who spoke of the vast amount of young men who fought in the battle.

To put it into perspective, Canada’s four divisions were made up of nearly 100,000 soldiers, while the current Canadian Army has one division with roughly 15,000 soldiers.

“It’s almost unfathomable how many people were there, and how they could have organized

Discussing the mentality of a soldier, he emphasized the tremendous amount of bravery the young men demonstrated at Vimy Ridge.

“What makes them get out of that trench?

What makes them walk forward? Once you get to the field, any ideology you had is gone,” said MWO Corneau. “You’re not fighting anymore for King and Country, you’re fighting for the man beside you.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - The entire community of Cornwall, Akwesasne and Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry came together to celebrate the opening of the Cornwall Innovation Centre (CIC) on Thursday, April 6.

“This centre is all about creating jobs and economic development,” said Lesley Lang of the Community Futures Development Corporation.

“Part of the innovation centre is that it is a network of mentors.”

The CIC is a partnership between a variety of organizations to promote economic growth in Cornwall, this includes strong support from Carleton University’s Sprott School of Business.

The CIC will aim to promote growth in Cornwall through Carleton’s Lead to Win program.

The program is aimed at promoting businesses with a high growth potential.

The Lead to Win program provides coaches,

buyers support, employee funding for youth, space to work and more for start-up businesses that can prove growth potential.

In their first 28 months of opening, the CIC hopes to help launch 15 businesses, assist another 150 and create 100 jobs.

“We are going to make Cornwall a highly attractive home (for entrepreneurs)” said Carleton Professor Tony Bailetti. “We are going to create innovative companies here in Cornwall.”

Bailetti outlined five goals for the CIC. First, they plan on helping create five transnational companies every year and for each company to reach a value of $1 million within three years. Raisin River Canoe Race celebrates 45 years MARTINTOWN, Ontario - Despite treacherous conditions, the 45th annual Raisin River Canoe Race went off without a hitch.

With temperatures climbing to 18 C in the afternoon, paddlers welcomed the warm weather with a day of fun on the river.

Josh Forrester and his father were among one of the teams participating in this year’s race.

He says that the Canoe Race is deeply ingrained in the Forrester Clan, who have taken part 25 years in a row.

“When you’re a family of seven kids, there’s always someone willing to do it,” said Forrester.

“We all love sports and outdoors so it’s something we can’t miss each year.”

Beginning in 1973, the 30km course runs from St. Andrews all the way down to Williamstown. Always held during the spring freshet when water levels are high, Mother Nature gave paddlers a little extra push this

year, forcing organizers to cut the Devils Chute due to safety.

Instead, the start was moved to Delaney Road, making for a shorter, but ultimately safer race.

“This is the fastest finishing times I’ve ever seen,” said Forrester. “It’s because there was such a heavy flow.”

Matthew Levac has taken part in the event four consecutive years, and says that this year’s race presented some new challenges.

“Because of the increase flow, we capsized at McIntyre rapids,” said Levac. “We chased the canoe down river until we finally caught up.

Unfortunately we never finished the race.”

“The Mcintyre rapids appeared as a wall of standing water and at the time of approached we were unprepared and a little to tired,” said Levac.

Levac says he really appreciated the help from the community and volunteer crew.
