CORNWALL, Ontario - This Friday, March 31, the Kinsmen Club of Cornwall hosted their 11th annual Pizza Party fundraiser at the Best Western.

Slinging pizza pies from eight local restaurants, the event aimed to raise money for local individuals and charitable organizations to offer them a leg-up with funding.

Throughout the evening, a panel came to the painstaking conclusion in deciding which Cornwall pizza reigned supreme, selecting the city’s top three pizzerias.

Funds raised during the event will help in supporting Koala Place Child and Youth Advocacy, Big Brothers and Big Sisters Cornwall, the Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall and SD&G, Rachel’s Kids, as well as the SPEC OPS program.

Event chairman Scott Beck says that what makes the event work is the community’s continued support.

“It’s all done through fun and interaction with the community,” said Beck.

The event brought in approximately 260 people, with roughly two thirds being returning guests. “The rest are all new faces,” said Beck. “We’re very happy with that.”

With members assisting the staff in serving up slices, Beck said that he was grateful to have such a dedicated team backing the event.

“It’s been all hands on deck,” said Beck.

“The Kinsmen Club has really come together to make this a wonderful event.”

Last year’s event raised roughly $14,000.00 bringing the overall total to over $135,000.00 raised to support the community’s greatest needs.

Civil War remembered

The Lost Villages Historical Society, The Grays and Blues of Montreal and Martel & Sons Inc. have collaborated to erect a monument in South Stormont in memory of Canadians who fought in the American Civil War. The Grays and Blues of Montreal are a Civil War re-enactment organization. The monument, to be located in The Lost Villages, is scheduled to be dedicated Sept. 17, 2017.

Martel & Sons Inc. will be building the monument of black stone imported from India. On Monday, April 3, the three organizations involved signed the paperwork to get the project started.

From 1861 to 1865 approximately 40, 000 Canadians from Ontario, Quebec, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island and Newfoundland fought in the American Civil War. Through the course of the conflict, 8, 000 were killed or wounded and 29 Canadians received the Medal of Honor; America’s highest award for bravery.

It is alleged during an argument on February 25th, 2017 at a local dart tournament a 47-yearold Cornwall man was threatened to be stabbed with darts and assaulted causing him to seek medical attention for his teeth. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. On March 30th, 2017 all four attended police headquarters to deal with the matter.

The CCHF has pledged $1.2 million for the new Centre for Addiction and Mental Health beside the hospital. So far they are halfway to their goal at $600, 000.

Cornwall’s new mental health and addictions centre is the first of its kind in Eastern Ontario. It is prepared to treat patients of all ages and conditions.

“There is now one place where people know they can go to find the help that they need,” said Amy Gillespie, Executive Director of the CCHF. Each hour of the radiothon will be sponsored by a different business and those businesses have pledged to match donations that come in during their hour.

The title sponsor of the event is Dairy Queen, who have made the cool move and sweetened

the pot by offering to sell ice cream sandwiches at the hospital during the fundraiser.

Remax will be operating the drive-thru at the Janet MacDonald Pavilion where people can drop off their donations.

Additionally, there will be a wide variety of other volunteers who will be helping to make sure that the radiothon is a success on Thursday.

“You see a great cross section of Cornwall coming together to support this cause,” said Gillespie.

On the day of the radiothon, from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. the parking lot at the hospital will be open to make it easier for donors to deliver their contributions.

Up until Wednesday night at 11:59 p.m. donors who donate $100 can also pick the song of their choice to play during the radiothon. See the CCHF website for details.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Lucienne Bray celebrated her 100th birthday among friends and residents at the Cornwall and Area Housing Corporation. Cindy-Ann Drouin and Margaret Duroucher were the masterminds behind the event, and said that planning began roughly six months ago, in order to receive all honourary certificates.

“We started the process early because we

wanted to make sure they arrived in time for her special day,” said Drouin.

With greetings from the likes of Premier Kathleen Wynne, Prime Minister Justin Trudeau, and even the Queen herself, Bray said she was blown away. “I still don’t know where I’m going to put them, but it’ll have to be somewhere special,” said Bray.

Bray was joined by almost 50 guests, and said that she hadn’t planned on celebrating, but if a party was being thrown on her behalf, she certainly didn’t want to be rude.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Fire prevention officers spent the afternoon inspecting two Second Street low-rise apartment buildings.

The inspection revealed that neither building had working smoke detectors. According to the Ontario Ministry of Community Safety & Correctional Services, every home in Ontario must have a working smoke alarm on every storey and outside all sleeping areas. Failure to do this could result in fines ranging from a $265 infraction to a penalty as costly as $50,000.

Cornwall fire chief, Pierre Voisine says that this sort of disregard for public safety is totally unacceptable. “If you’re a property owner who isn’t staying on top of fire code regulations, you’re essentially taking your tenants lives into

your own hands,” said Voisine.

While fire prevention officers typically conduct these inspections at random, Voisine says that tenants should contact the fire department if they feel that something in their building is unsafe. Though fire prevention officers can issue fines, they are typically lenient with structural changes which cannot be implemented as quickly.

“We try to be fair about certain things,” said Voisine. “It really depends on severity of issue.”

Failure to install working smoke detectors, however, is considered a much more serious offense.

While the property owner was not present during the time of the investigation, new smoke detectors were being installed to comply with fire standards and ensure safety.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Councillor Maurice Dupelle pushed for a motion to stop the City of Cornwall from paying management fees to Leader Sports, the private company that operates the Big Ben Ski Hill and Marina 200.

The motion was hotly debated at the meeting of City of Council on Monday, March 23.

If passed, the City would cease management fee payments in 2018.

“We have no association with the companies that manage this property,” Dupelle explained. “These are tight budget times. It does not go to something personal, it goes to not giving municipal funds to private business.”

Councillor Elaine MacDonald however, expressed her opposition to ending the municipal subsidy for these two Cornwall attractions.

“I can’t say I support this as it is,” she said.

“We don’t have the where-with-all to run these operations ourselves. I would hate to lose these services in our municipality. As long as it fills a niche in our city that can’t be filled any other way I think it is worth taking a pause before we cancel it outright.”

MacDonald pointed out that the City pays a similar management fee to minor hockey teams when they use the City’s ice time at local hockey rinks.

Councillor Bernadette Clement brought forth a motion to defer the final decision on the subsidy until more information could be brought to council. Specifically, Clement wanted to know if these two sites could be better maintained for a better cost.

“Everytime we subsidize ice time for minor

hockey, we’re subsidizing and we should be subsidizing childrens activities,” she said.

Councillor Towndale opposed the deferral and objected to the comparison of the deal that Leader Sports has to the management fees that are paid to minor hockey teams.

“Minor hockey pays us for ice time and we give them a discount,” he said. “They (Leader Sports) don’t pay us to use Big Ben, we pay them..

“I’m not sure why we would defer this,” said Councillor Dupelle. “We don’t subsidize private business. That is the issue on the table. I ask for a recorded vote to see who is in favour of funding private business and who isn’t.”

The City’s Division Manager for Parks and Recreation James Fawthrop said that the City is paying $64, 000 for Marina 200, but not all of that goes towards Leader Sports’ management fee, explaining that the City also pays for utilities and building maintenance.

While Councillor Claude McIntosh pointed out that he did not believe the City could not operate the sites in a more cost effective way, he also warned council that if they did not move carefully, the City could lose these two attractions.

“Ice camps are making money using our facilities. I can make a buck on renting ice from The City,” he said. “My concern is that we say we’re not trying to close Big Ben and the Marina, but in some ways we are. They could walk away from it and we should be very careful.”

The motion to defer passed by a vote of 8-3 with Councillors Dupelle, Towndale and Murphy voting against. City Administration has until the end of April to come back with a report to Council on alternatives to the management fees for Big Ben and Marina 200.

The Centennial Choir celebrates 50 years Centennial Choir Handout The Centennial Choir is celebrating our 50th anniversary. The choir was formed in 1967 (Canada’s Centennial Year) by Brian McCartney from a nucleus of members who sang in the Cornwall Collegiate and Vocational School choral group and the Edgar Shaw Hansen Singers. The choir has a long history of excellence and has performed in many local venues as well as in England, Wales, and the United States. The choir performs music that ranges from sacred to secular, modern to classical and popular to jazz. Each year the choir hosts a Christmas Concert and a Spring Concert in Cornwall.

The Centennial Choir is a community choir that also performs at special occasions for local organizations, senior homes and churches. We have also organized choir performances as fundraisers to help our community in areas of need – Beyond 21, Cornwall Community Hospital – Mental Health and Addiction programs to name but a few. We have hosted choirs in the past such as The Trelawny Male Choir from the County of Cornwall in England.

We provided a cultural tour of our city and

surrounding area to their families to showcase our area.

We have also participated in the Cornwall Concert Series with The Elmer Iseler Singers from Toronto when they performed at the Aultsville Theatre in Cornwall a few years ago.

We presently have over 60 singers in the 4 part choir – alto, bass, tenor and soprano. Over the years, more than 500 individuals have sang as part of The Centennial Choir. The choir’s executive is presently in the process of trying to contact as many alumni as possible to invite them to the spring concert. One particular

song will be sung by all present and former choir members.

The Centennial Choir provides one $500 bursary each year to a graduating student, from one of the area high schools, who is pursuing their studies in the area of vocal music at a college or university.

This year our spring concert is celebrating not only our 50th anniversary but Canada’s 150.

The Centennial Choir is presenting Canada – Something to Sing About! on Friday, May 12th, 2017 at Aultsville Theatre, in Cornwall beginning at 7:30 pm under the direction of

Lisa Zeran and Felicity Swenson, accompanist.

The all Canadian composer performance will feature Cape Breton songs, folk songs dating back to the Upper and Lower Canada rebellions, French Canadian favourites and many other beloved Canadian folk songs.

CORNWALL, Ontario - For the fourth year, Masquer-aid has brought the community together in supprt of a good cause, the Candlelighters.

The Candlelighters provide support for parents who have children suffering from cancer. In the past four years, Masquer-aid has raised about $70, 000 in support of the Candlelighters.

“We can’t provide our services without events like these,” said Jocelyn Lamont of the Candlelighters. “We completely rely on these events.”

This year’s event was held at the Ramada Inn in Cornwall on Saturday, April 1. Jillian OxleyHarper, one of the event’s organizers said that the event was almost sold out and that she expected 160 people to attend. Oxley-Harper expected the

event to raise $25, 000 through ticket sales and their auction. There was also a special gift basket, valued at $3, 000 being raffled off that evening.

The basket contained a plush penguin, beer, wine and much much more.

The Candlelighters help with all sorts of expenses that childhood cancer treatment can incur, such has parking costs at CHEO, which in a 30 day month over a 10 month period can add up to $3, 900.

Masquer-aid was started by Dr. Raji Menan has a way to give back on her birthday four years ago. A group of dedicated volunteers have kept it going ever since. “The most important thing we want people to know is that cancer hits close to home,”said Oxley-Harper. “In Eastern Ontario, one child a week is diagnosed with cancer. It is an incredible financial burden. More often than not, one parent has to leave their job.”

NAV Centre Chef takes trip to Delaware Since 2013, Jessica Neville has been growing her culinary talents and she has been doing it right here in Cornwall in the kitchens of the NAV Centre.

Jessica got her start in this career thanks to Eastern Ontario Training Board who placed her at the NAV Centre through their placement program.

Jessica says she started out by learning cuts and recipes and then moved onto the oven.

Starting out as a kitchen helper, Jessica eventually moved up to being a cook and started off making breakfast every day. “It was a good experience for me and made me want to proceed further,” she said. Jessica explained that before she became a cook, her culinary skills were more limited, but that her interests grew as she began to explore and learn.“I was a Kraft Dinner girl,” she said. “I like working as a cook though, because now I can do different things in this field.” Now, Jessica has moved up and is preparing Lunch at the NAV Centre.

In late January, Jessica competed in the Copper Skillet competition that was hosted by the NAV Centre and judged by famous chef, Mike Smith. Jessica participated in the youth category and came out on top, winning a trip to Delaware.

She spent three days in Delaware and got to witness not only the close connection of the community that she visited, but also learned about some of the unique Delaware cuisine. She explained that one dish served in Delaware uses muskrat as the protein. Jessica explained some of the important lessons she has learned as a chef in her young career.“One of the most important things I learned is safety,” she said. “Be aware of your surroundings and have a big open eye.

Also I learned that it is important to go with what you feel and don’t second guess Jessica Neville yourself.”

Two new projects at the Eastern Ontario Training Board (EOTB) are designed to be an important stepping stone for those searching for full-time work in Cornwall and SD&G. Both the Opportunities Fund and the Skills Link program offer a skill training component followed by a paid work placement with the goal of permanent employment for the future.

The education portion of the programs is followed up by a 12 week paid employment period where wages are subsidized through the EOTB.

The EOTB hopes to help nearly 50 participants in Cornwall and SD&G across both programs.

There are already 15 participants from both programs who began training in the construction field and in April, EOTB will begin training for Professional Food and Beverage service which already has 17 participants ready to start.

Participants in both of these programs will start off by learning important and marketable skills for their future fields of employment. The Food and Beverage program offers training in food preparation, bartending, sales and customer service, while the Construction program

teaches its students skills such as math, carpentry and reading and writing blue prints.

Participants will also receive license and certifications based on the programs they enter, the Food and Beverage students will receive WHIMIS/ CPR, SmartServe, Safe Food Handling and Service Excellence, while the Construction participants, in addition to their CPR and WHIMIS, will also receive license and certification in Traffic Control, Working at Heights, Confined Space Awareness, Scaffold Safety and Tag Out/Lock Out. The Skills Link program is open to motivated youth under 30 years of age who are under or

unemployed.

The Opportunities Fund is open to participants of any age who identify as having a disability.

“The project is allowing its participants the ability to re-enter the working world, motivated, prepared and confident,” said the EOTB’s Kim Vass-Lihou. “Along with the necessary skills to facilitate employment maintenance, participants work for employers in the community who are providing opportunities, experience and knowledge. Consequently our participants gain skills, which make them an invaluable resource to their employer. “

Gaming is big business!

We all probably know at least one individual that seems obsessed with video games. They live, breathe, dream gaming – if they’re not playing, they’re reading about them; if they’re not reading about them, they’re talking about them. And if you’re not a gamer, it can be hard to relate.

Gaming is more than just entertainment. In today’s highly digital world, it is also an important format of digital literacy – just like being able to communicate through reading and writing, communicating and understanding a

variety of technological formats can be just as important. And for non-gamers, this is not always something that is top of mind when communicating with a gamer.

Beyond the entertainment value, video games can provide learning opportunities. They can provide the opportunity for players to learn to problem solve using trial and error. Through practice and discipline, players improve their skills. And you cannot forget the language that goes with gaming – have you ever had a conversation with a passionate gamer and not understood most of what they said?

And the other side of playing video games, is the game development side. It’s hard to

understand how to create a game, if you don’t first understand what it is you’d be trying to create. As you delve into the world of game development, you learn more about the unique language, the logic and detail that goes into each move, and the creativity it encourages. The worlds that are created can be complex, requiring a lot of skill and knowledge from those involved.

As with some things, moderation can be necessary, but gaming is definitely an important part of our digital lives. And, when learning something new (at any age), it can be

intimidating when you start. Public libraries are helping people understand all forms of literacy – including digital literacy – and can be the perfect place to start your journey into gaming.

The SD&G County Library offers a variety devices and activities to help anyone get comfortable with gaming, including access to devices such as the Xbox One and Nintendo Switch, and courses introducing individuals to coding. There has been something very atypical about the Ontario Liberal Government of Kathleen Wynne and it can be summed up in one phrase “are they even trying to win?”

Like a losing team trying to get a good draft pick, it feels like the Liberals are just throwing the game now, but instead of a draft pick, their reward will be to be cast down into third party obscurity for a few “rebuilding seasons”.

Just looking at their platform, it just seems to be built for catastrophe. It is hard to think of even one piece of policy that they can run on.

Hydro of course has been a disaster. No matter what the reason, you cannot expect people to pay such a high price for electricity, especially in the winter and be happy about it.

However, the fatal wound that the provincial government has inflicted on itself has to be their decision to stand idly by while rural schools are

closed, and rural students are sent out of their communities.

The school boards are following the directives and are working within the parameters given to them by the provincial government. Those parameters are directly harming rural communities and the students who grow up there.

How can a town survive without a school?

Why would a young family want to move to a rural community if it means that their child has to spend upwards of an hour on the bus every day?

By creating the environment that has lead to school closures, and doing nothing to prevent them the Liberal government has awakened rural communities against them, this generation of parents and future generations of voters as well.

A moratorium on school closures would have gone a long way not just in saving rural schools, but in saving a few Liberal seats as well. By not doing so, the Ontario Liberals have condemned themselves to the political wilderness.

African famine crisis for United Nations Sultan Jessa

Nearly 1.5 million children are at imminent risk of death from malnutrition resulting from a severe famine in Africa.

This crisis will get worse unless the international community acts immediately.

The famine has hit a large part of Africa.

This is not new to Africa which has seen this type of crisis in the past.

But, the current crisis is much bigger and affects a lot more people.

According to United Nation’s humanitarian chief Stephen O’Brien the world faces the

largest “humanitarian crisis” since the world body was founded in 1945.

Altogether more than 20 million people in countries like South Sudan, Somalia, Nigeria, Yemen and remote parts of East Africa face starvation and famine.

Also affected by famine are parts of Burundi, Djibouti and Eritrea.

O’Brien told the UN Security Council that “without collective and coordinated global efforts, people will simply starve to death” and also many more will suffer and die from diseases.

A number of global organizations have started collecting funds and food supplies.

But, this is not enough.

The wealthy Western nations have to much more.

To be precise, O’Brien emphasized, the world body needs $4.4 billion by the middle of the year.

This is a mammoth task.

Without the infusion of money and food aid, thousands of children will be stunned by severe malnutrition.

Among other criteria, the United Nations and food organizations define famine as when more than 30 per cent of children under age five suffer from acute malnutrition and mortality rates are two or more deaths per 10,000 people

every day.

United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is expected to chair a pledging conference Yemen in late April in Geneva.

A number of countries are also wrestling with the impact of El Nino.

More than 17 countries in Africa are at the moment struggling to come to terms with the impact of two consecutive years of drought which has left more than 38 million people at risk this year.

Drought have scorched harvests and ruined livelihoods.

There are so many questions to be answered!

Did they make it all the way to France? What surprises, pleasures, mishaps and hardships took place? Was anything learned? Was this the first of many such trips, or the first and last?

Valleyfield. They were fresh off the plane, overloaded with gear, full of bright-eyed enthusiasm, ready to bike across Portugal, Spain and France.

On their backs they had frame backpacks that were too large for cycling. Their rear panniers were too small, so that a clutter of various objects was strapped on top of and behind the panniers. Their front packs were too small. Their clothing was too elaborate and too heavy (e.g. woollen Hudson Bay-type jackets). They even had heavy hiking boots.

After Bombardier was handed (yet another) huge cash infusion by the federal government, executives were caught giving themselves a huge pay increase. ... Remember how the Liberals howled when a Conservative cabinet minister put a $12 glass of orange juice on her expense account? There wasn’t much howling from the Libs last week when the Prime Minister, his family and a small entourage went through $1,700 worth of food and drinks while on a threehour flight to a vacation spot .

LOST AND FOUND DEPT. There was a time when the city gave out plates and fancy cuff links bearing the city crest to special visitors. Dozens were handed out over the years. Among the cuff link recipients were members of the Joe Gurowka rink, at the time Ontario’s top men’s foursomes.

That was in the early-1960s when the rink was honoured during a visit to the old curling club on Amelia Street. Few weeks back in Port Charlotte, Fla. Cornwall’s Bill Dickie, a former Canadian men’s senior champion, met up with Tom Howat, a member of the Gurowka rink. Howat told the Cornwall skip that he was doing some household purging a few days earlier and guess what he found? One of the cuff links that was given to him some 50 years ago.

THIS WEEK CIRCA 1948 A familiar face stood before Magistrate P.C. Bergeron. It was the man’s 83rd appearance in Cornwall magistrate’s court on minor criminal charges. This time it was for possessing liquor in a place other than his residence. “This man’s local record fills five sheets of

foolscap,” noted the magistrate as he flipped through the rap sheet. The charges ranged from vagrancy to intoxication in a public place. Unable to pay the $50 fine, the man was given five days in the local slammer. ... A city resident was fined $2 for depositing furnace ashes on city property. ... A former Cornwall resident was given 18 months in reformatory after he pleaded guilty to bigamy and stealing $8,000 from the Cornwall Cemetery Board. As part of a plea deal, the deed for his house was turned over to the cemetery board. ... Cornwall Curling Club announced plans to build a curling rink at a cost of $50,000. A site was to be selected. ... Glenco Cheese Factory in Bonville opened. It was owned and operated by local resident Elias Truax. ... Ald. Nathan Phillips, son of Mrs. J.J. Phillips of 39 First St. W., was honoured for his 25 years service on Toronto city council. .... The New Bargain Store opened at 37 Edward St. ... A $145,000 addition to West Front Public School was approved. ... The new tourist information booth would be built on New York Central Railway property on Highway 2 just east of Roosevelt Bridge. ... In his annual Our Citizens of Tomorrow (OCOT) report to the Cornwall Athletic Commission, supervisor Joe St. Denis reported that 500 boys on 40 hockey teams played 200 games on six outdoor rinks. In the summer, 28,000 boys and girls used the Central Park pool and the Cornwall Canal swimming spot at Silver Bridge.

There is still time for Preem Kathy and the Liberals to save their political bacon with a voting buying spree but the current numbers - as in poll numbers - are not good.

Of course, there is always a chance the Conservatives, again, will manage to yank defeat from the jaws of victory about two feet from the finish line and a victory lap.

Polls have the preem’s approval rating scratching bottom at a dismal 12%. This is akin to being down 10 runs. The same polls show the Liberals headed for third-party status.

Ah, where’s McFibber when you need him.

The provincial poll numbers are not a boost for the local Liberals who will have a hard time coming up with a “star” candidate to challenge Conservative MPP Jim McDonell in StormontDundas-South Glengarry. He owns back-to-back landslide victories.

The riding will remain in the Conservatives’ “safe seat” column.

As for those sinking poll numbers remember that not too long ago the federal Liberals were on the endangered species list. Then along came Trudeau the Younger and the Great Revival.

Bad news for the provincial Grits is that Preem Kathy says she is staying on.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Fines Home Hardware, the sponsor of this year’s Cornwall Chamber of Commerce Spring Home and Leisure Show, announced on Friday, March 10 that gardening specialist and TV personality Mark Cullen will be presenting at the show on April 7 and 8.

“We’ve worked, in partnership with the Chamber and we’re delighted to announce that Mark will be joining us for parts of this year’s Show,” states Scott Fines, store owner. “Visitors to the Spring Show will watch his interactive presentations about new trends in gardening and he will also be available in our booth so visitors can ask questions,” continued Fines.

Cullen will be presenting from 7 p.m. to 8 p.m. on the Friday and from 12 p.m. to 1 p.m. on the Saturday. Additionally, he will be fielding questions from show go-ers on their gardening projects and will be available at the Fines Home Hardware booth following the presentations.

“The Chamber has worked with Fines Home Hardware to offer this year’s grand prize, a $5000.00 outdoor treasure trove that includes a riding lawn mower, a fabulous Traeger Grill, a patio set, fire pit, and so much more,” reports Executive Manager Lezlie Strasser. “It is a tremendous prize and we’re pleased with Fines, as our title sponsor, in making the prize available for some lucky Show visitor.”

The show will feature nearly 100 exhibitors with the latest in gardening and home improvement.

The annual Spring Show is coming up and there is a great prize package up for grabs from Fines Home Hardware.

The Spring Home and Leisure Show will be hosted at Cornwall Civic Complex. Doors open at 4 p.m. on Friday April 7 and close at that same time on Sunday April 9. Admission is $5 for adults, $4 for seniors and students and children under 12 accompanied by an adult get in for free.

Le CSDCEO à Queen’s Park : les écoles catholiques sont importantes Communiqué de presse de la CSDCEO Des membres du Conseil scolaire de district catholique de l’Est ontarien (CSDCEO) ont participé à une journée de démarchage politique à Queen’s Park récemment. Il s’agissait de la toute première activité de ce genre, organisée par l’Association franco-ontarienne des conseils scolaires catholiques (AFOCSC) et qui s’inscrit dans le plan d’action de cet organisme en matière de sensibilisation des enjeux provinciaux et locaux.

Lors de cette journée, la conseillère et les conseillers scolaires ont eu l’occasion de rencontrer, entres autres, le député provincial représentant la région de Glengarry-PrescottRussell, monsieur Grant Clark, et le député provincial représentant la région de StormontDundas-Glengarry Sud, monsieur Jim McDonell. La journée avait pour but d’échanger avec les députés(es) provinciaux sur des sujets tels les besoins du CSDCEO afin d’assurer la réussite de tous ses élèves. « Nos élèves réussissent mieux que partout ailleurs sur notre territoire. Notre taux de diplomation le démontre. De plus, nos écoles sont populaires. 81 % des parents qui choisissent les

Débat au conseil de ville sur les subventions aux entreprises privées Nick Seebruch

CORNWALL, Ontario- Le conseiller municipal Maurice Dupelle a tenté de faire adopter une motion pour cesser de payer des frais de gestion à Leader Sports, l’entreprise chargée des opérations de la Marina 200 et de Big Ben Ski Hill.

La motion présentée a suscité un débat houleux lors de la séance du conseil du 23 mars.

Si elle est adoptée, la Ville cesserait de défrayer dès 2018.

“Nous n’avons aucune entente avec ces compagnies pour gérer ces propriétés, a expliqué le conseiller Dupelle. Ce sont des temps difficiles pour la gestion de notre budget. Cela n’a rien de personnel, c’est une question de ne pas donner de subventions municipales à des entreprises privées.”

La conseillère municipale Elaine MacDonald, cependant, a exprimé son désaccord de mettre fin aux subventions pour ces deux attractions touristiques de Cornwall.

“Je ne peux pas dire que j’approuve la façon de faire actuelle, indique-t-elle. Mais nous n’avons pas l’expertise pour la gestion de ces

opérations. Je ne souhaite pas que l’on perde ces services dans notre ville. Tant qu’il y aura une niche que nous ne pouvons remplacer, je crois que ça vaut la peine de penser à tout cela avant de mettre un terme (à ces subventions).”

Mme MacDonald souligne que la Ville paie un frais de gestion similaire pour la gestion du hockey mineur quand ils utilisent les heures de glace de la municipalité pour les glaces municipales.

La conseillère Bernardette Clément a demandé que la motion soit reportée afin que les élus aient davantage d’information avant de prendre une décision sur ce sujet. Tout particulièrement, l’élue voulait savoir si les deux sites visés pouvaient faire l’objet d’une évaluation du rapport qualité-prix.

“Chaque fois que nous divisions le temps de glace pour le hockey mineur, nous le faisons et nous devrions le faire pour toutes les activités.

Le conseiller Towndale s’est opposé à ce que la motion soit reportée et refuse de comparer les deux situations, parce que les deux systèmes de subvention sont bien différents.

“Pour le hockey mineur, ils nous paient pour le temps de glace et nous leurs donnont un

rabais tandis qu’avec (Leader Sports), ils ne nous paient pas pour utiliser Big Ben, on les paient.”

“Je ne crois pas que nous pouvons reporter ceci, indique M. Dupelle. Nous ne subventionnons pas d’entreprises privées. C’est l’enjeu qui est sur la table. J’ai demandé pour un vote formel pour voir qui est en faveur ou pas de subventionner l’entreprise privée.”

La direction responsable des loisirs et des parcs de la Ville de Cornwall, James Fawthrop, a indiqué que la municipalité payait 64 000$ pour la gestion de la Marina 200, mais que ce montant inclue aussi l’entretient et l’équipement.

Le conseiller municipal Claude McIntosh croit que la Ville ne serai pas en mesure de mener les opérations de ces sites pour un meilleur ratio de coût, et a du même coup averti ses collègues que si la Ville n’agit pas de façon appropriée, elle pourrait se trouver à perdre ces deux attractions.

“Les camps font de l’argent en utilisant nos installations. Je pourrais faire de l’argent en louant de la glace à la Ville, indique-t-il. Ma préoccupation est que nous disons d’un côté que nous ne souhaitons pas fermer Big Ben et la

Dans le monde entier, la dictée PGL est pratiquée par les élèves de la maternelle à la 8e année. Cette année le thème est: “Le monde dans mon assiette”. La dictée PGL a été créé par Paul Gérin-Lajoie qui a le but d’améliorer la grammaire chez les élèves autour du monde. À l’école Rose des Vents, le projet est présenté aux élèves de la 4e à la 6e année.

Il y a énormément d’élèves qui participent à chaque année au Canada. Il y a aussi des élèves qui prennent part à cette activitée au Sénégal, aux États-Unis, en Algérie et au Maroc.

Le finaliste de notre école est Liam Godard. Bravo, nous sommes fiers de toi! Les autres écoles qui ont participé à la finale régionale de notre école sont: Paul VI, Lycée Claudel, Sainte-Trinité, Ange Gabriel, Charlotte Lemieux, Nouvel Horizon, Académie de la Capitale, Académie Jeanne D’Arc, Michaëlle Jean et Pierre-Elliott Trudeau.

Les élèves participants sont classés en deux catégories: les élèves francophones et les élèves en français langue seconde. Les élèves écoutent et rédigent une dictée très ardue et difficile! A new agri-food project with Kozroots Community Empowerment Projects (KCEP) will assist women in Cornwall and SDG towards empowerment. In its inaugural year the Tapping In Project will collaborate with local farmers and woodlot owners, where the previously untapped maple trees will be harvested for maple syrup.

Lahaie & Sullivan awarded Lisa Herjavec (far right of the photo) as a part of their Paying-it-Forward initiative for her above and beyond work for the residents at Heartwood Long Term Care Home. The anonymous individual who nominated Lisa for the award said that she was “One of the most unselfish, caring, devoted, empathetic people,” that they had ever met. Lisa plans so many great activities for the residents at Heartwood like camping, beach trips, outdoor pic-nics and NHL hockey games. Even outside work, Lisa donates her time at organizations such as Bereaved Families. Lahaie & Sullivan’s Laurie Sullivan-Kennedy said that Lisa Herjavec was very deserving to be Lahaie & Sullivan’s March receipient of their Paying-it-Forward initiative.

Earlier this year the Community Food, Winchester location was faced with an unexpected expense. In efforts to ensure donations would continue to benefit the community, several local groups banded together to raise funds, they managed to raise a total of $5,500.

Last Friday, March 31, partners in the Centre of Excellence for Rural Health and Education came together to celebrate the second phase of the Community Care Building, located on the Winchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH) campus.

The sugar bush at Kemptville’s Agroforestry Educational Centre is being tapped again to produce maple syrup for the first time in three years.

As a result, they’ve nearly doubled their syrup output as a result of the new arrangement.
