Senators foster a love at Boys and Girls Club Alycia Douglass CORNWALL, Ontario - When it comes to the kids at Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG, one thing is certain - they’re crazy about hockey.

On Tuesday, Jan. 24, the club received a donation of ball hockey equipment from the Street Senturions Enjeu initiative, which is shaping up to be a game-changer for everyone involved. The program is the local component of the NHL Street program and helps to supply local community centres with the equipment to run free youth ball hockey programs.

Cornwall/SDG club Communications and Marketing Coordinator Trevor Smith says that the program was an easy sell. “When we tell them that an Ottawa Senator is coming to the clubhouse, people are generally pretty excited,” said Smith.

“Especially since it’s Jesse, and he does such great things for our club.”

To date, more than 35 sets of equipment have been donated to local centres in hopes of encouraging child participation in the game of hockey in Ottawa and surrounding areas.

Sens-alumni, Jesse Winchester who hails from Cornwall, was there to present the equipment, and of course, try it out with some of the kids.

“Hockey has always been a big part of my life since I was a little kid,” said Winchester. “More recently I’ve developed a relationship with the Boys and Girls Club, and the Sens asked me to take part in this event, which combines both passions.”

“I wanted to branch out to other places that needed the program just as much as the kids in Ottawa do,” said Lafranchise, remarking that Cornwall was an easy choice.

executive director, Jacquie Richards, the proposal was met with overwhelming gratitude. “They connected with us a couple months ago, and we worked with them,” said Richards. “Fast-forward to today, we are now able to receive some awesome new equipment which will service our eight locations as we begin our street hockey program.”

“We’re fortunate because most of our staff has a background in hockey,” said Richards, noting

that the club’s in-house talent has been helpful in the steps leading up to the the program’s delivery.

With hopes of incorporating ice hockey into next year’s programming, Lafranchise says that the street hockey program will act as a test.

“We’re trying to bring more programs to Cornwall and help kids learn to love the game and see where it can take them,” said Lafranchise.

This month, we would like to recognize the members of La Citadelle’s Athletic Association as February’s Athlete of the Month. In addition to their studies and their dedication to their sports, the athletes of La Citadelle’s Athletic Association have still found time to raise money for their community. Goal scorers were Ty Megenhardt (1), Caleb Barnes (2) – including the game winning overtime goal. “Once again, I am extremely proud of the outcome and of the boys,” said coach Mike Marleau. “The games featured great passing and skating by the boys and this made all the difference. Last year, we played at the same tournament and did not make it to the medal round so this was even better for some of the team members who are returning players. I am extremely blessed to have a supportive coaching staff who also contributed to the success of our team that day.”

Claude McIntosh In the spring of 1941 a 12-year-old kid from the east end of Cornwall was hired as a caddy at the nine-hole Cornwall Golf and Country Club.

Seven years later Roland “Joe” Mercier scraped together $22.50 and became an intermediate member. Senior level memberships sold for $50.

He put away his golf clubs for good four years ago but shortly after he was made an honourary member. Counting his days as a caddy, that is 75-year, and counting, association with the club.

How passionate was Joe about golf?

“I even had it in my marriage contract that I could play golf three times a week - Tuesdays, Thursdays and Saturdays. Never on Sundays, unless there was a tournament on a weekend,” laughed the 87-year-old.

His best score was a 73 shot in the 1957 Cornwall Open.

Working as a caddy had its perks.

“I caddied for a doctor who gave my family a

30% discount,” he said.

These were the days before OHIP. He was “fired” in his first year as a caddy but quickly rehired.

“I lost a golf ball for a lady (from a prominent family) I was caddying for,” he said.

In those days, the members were mostly professional folks. Not many “regular joes”.

He regularly caddied for Mayor Aaron Horovitz who played every day at 4 p.m.

Mercier credits his club association with landing his first job, at Canadian Cottons, in 1948. And when the company closed its Cornwall operations, his club connections landed him a job at Courtaulds where he climbed the ranks to assistant secretary-treasurer. He was, at the time, the highest ranking French Canadian in the company.

These days, Mercier misses more than golf.

Since 2008 he has been keeping a list of members he played with over the years.

“How many do you think are on that list?” he asked.

“It is up to 70. I knew them all.”

Rusty Conway and Adrien “Foxy” Fontaine had two apiece with Bruno Lamarche adding one. Stan Willis scored for Finishing Room. ... Eddie Kyer’s goal lifted Racine’s Kick-off Counter to a 1-0 victory over Hotel Cecile in Centre City Broomball League action. Leo Bedard had the shutout. ... Chicago centre Stan Makita was on his way to becoming the sixth player in NHL history to win back-to-back scoring titles. He led the league with 72 points on 23 goals

and 49 assists, five more than team-mate Bobby Hull. Makita also had 140 penalty minutes.

ODDS AND ENDS The National Hockey League list of 100 greatest players had two glaring omissions with Cornwall ties - Dale Hawerchuk and Newsy Lalonde. Agreed that the former Cornwall Royals’ superstar was up against some of the game’s best, but selecting Adam Oates over Hawerchuk? You’ve got to be kidding. A strong argument can be made that Hawerchuk had a better career than Jacques Lemire, Red Kelly, Bryan Trottier, Peter Forsberg and Mark Messier. Hard to understand how a legend of Newsy Lalonde’s stripe was left off the list. .... How time flies. It was 40 years ago this month that the movie Slapshot made its debut. Former Ontario Hockey League coach/general manager Larry Maverty and NHL coach Bruce Boudreau played in the movie. “I was No. 7,” Boudreau recalled on a Toronto sports talk show this week. Both Maverty and Boudreau said they made more money for their five minute appearance in the movie than they did playing for their minor league clubs in a week.

Each year thousands of people in Cornwall and S.D.&G. and many more across Canada show their support by donning pink on Pink Shirt Day.

Pink Shirt Day is now an internationally celebrated day, but its origins started right here in Canada.

David Shepherd and Travis Price, both of Berwick, Nova Scotia, started the movement, which is now known as Pink Shirt Day, back in 2007. The pair noticed a grade nine student at their school being bullied because he had chosen to wear a pink shirt to the first day of school. The boys decided to take a stand against bullying by going to local stores and purchasing 50 pink shirts to wear. The next day, Travis, David and 48 of their friends wore their pink shirts to school as a unified stance against bullying.

Cornwall Senior Men’s Curling held the Bob Trueman Founders Trophy Bonspiel, from January 2nd to January 27th 2017.

Gold and Silver for Local Air Cadets at Area Biathlon- Moving On to Provincials Air, army and sea cadets participated in the area biathlon competition over the weekend of 21, 22 January 2017 in Chelsea Quebec. Two local cadets were medalists, receiving silver and gold medals. Warrant Officer Second Class (WO2) Brandon Lefebvre and Sergeant (Sgt.) Dakota Wylie competed as a team at the competition, placing second with their team scores.

WO2 Brandon Lefebvre also placed first with his

individual score, earning him the gold medal.

Both have secured a position in Team Eastern Ontario and will be competing this weekend (February 11-12) in the Provincial level competition in Sault Ste Marie.

Biathlon is a skilled sports, requiring athletes to cross country ski using a skate skiing technique while applying marksmanship techniques on the range. Athletes must be coordin-

ated in both aspects of the sport.

Of the 264 competitors at the Eastern Ontario level of competition, 28 cadets were from Cornwall and SD&G participated at this level of competition.

This is the fifth year that cadets from 325 Cornwall Kiwanis Royal Canadian Air Cadets have participated in biathlon training, with help and support from the Cornwall Handgun Club

and Summerstown Trails. WO2 Lefebvre and Sgt Wylie will be the third and fourth competitors from this area to ever qualify for the provincial competition through cadets.

The team’s coach is Captain Sandy McDonald, the squadron’s training officer.

The squadron is supported by the Cornwall Kiwanis Club and RCAFA Wing 424, providing ski equipment and funds for the biathlon team.

DURHAM, Ontario - The Cornwall Bantam B Typhoons competed in their 5th tournament of the season at the 23rd Annual Durham West Girls Hockey Tournament on February 17 – 19, 2017 and captured GOLD. The Typhoons competed against teams from Toronto, Sudbury and Ottawa in round robin play. After round robin play the Typhoons

were tied for 1st in their division and competed against Toronto in the semi finals, winning the game and advancing to the championship round. The Typhoons faced Ottawa in the championship game, winning the game to take home the gold medal.

The Typhoons are currently gearing up for a successful playoff run in their league and competing in Playdowns to qualify for Provincials in Toronto in April.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Fans of the Cornwall Nationals came out in support of Warm-Up Cornwall this Sat. Jan. 28.

The initiative seeks to make sure that nobody in Cornwall is left in the cold this winter.

Fans were encouraged to bring a bag of winter gear (hats, scarves, mittens), throwing their donation onto the ice after the Nationals’ first goal.

Scoring the Warm-Up Cornwall goal 4:38 into the first was Maxime Guyon. Fans littered the ice with bags of warm clothing, which will be dispersed throughout the city for people to take as they need.

Kris McCarthy, who is the team’s Sales and

Marketing Director, says that the partnership came about fairly recently.

“It’s funny, I actually had a splint for my finger when I met them in the park,” said McCarthey. “I couldn’t fit my hand in a glove or a mitt, so Chantal knitted me a nub to keep my hand warm.”

Charity founder, Chantal Gilmour mentioned the initiative to McCarthey, who decided to promote it at one of the team’s upcoming games.

With the vision of something similar to a teddy bear toss, they began planning and promoting the event. “I was really happy with the result,” said McCarthey.”

“I think we had somewhere between 70 and 100 bags, so that’s another 200 articles of

clothing for the charity,” said Kris McCarthy. “It really helps people who are either homeless or don’t have access to warm clothing.”

It’s a big win for the Nationals, too. McCarthy says that it’s important that the community knows they are Cornwall’s team, and they’re working hard at proving that through continued charitable endeavours.

“Every team needs to be doing this in any professional league,” said McCarthy.

There were 752 fans in attendance at Saturday’s game.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Kale Howarth scored two back-to-back goals for Team West, giving them a 4-3 victory over Team East at the 12th annual CJHL Prospects Game, which was hosted at Cornwall’s Ed Lumley Arena on Weds. Jan. 25.

With the first assist by Team West’s Cody Laskosky, Marcus Mitchell scored at 16:31 of the first, beating East starter Anand Oberoi.

Team East forward, Mel Melconian tied the knot with just over two minutes left in the period with an assist by Matthew Barnaby.

Laskosky sauced a pass to Desi Bugart, who finished the play by roofing a perfect shot behind Oberoi for Team West.

Both sides changed goaltenders midway through, with Nate McDonald for Team East, and Ty Taylor entering nets for West.

Team West kept the pressure on, with Kale Howarth scoring a third goal following a left

point shot by Jarrod Gourley at 14:01.

Gaining some momentum, Josh Cammalleri added a second goal to the tally, with assists going to Phillip Lagunov and Matthieu Franche of Team East at 17:43.

Howarth scored another 2:47 into the third for the West, redirecting the puck past McDonald bringing the score to 4-2.

Team East found their stride halfway through the third with Cameron Wright finishing the play of Bobby Dow and Bryce Misley.

Team West held the edge in shots on goal of the night at 46-22 overall.

CJHL player of the game laurels went to Matthew Kellenberger of Team East and Team West’s Ian Mitchell.

Team West rose to victory in their seventh President’s Cup Prospects Game title in the 12-year history of the event.

The game drew approximately 1,700 spectators and over 150 NHL, NCAA, CIS and CHL scouts.
