They won their 1st game 7-1, lost their 2nd game 2-1 in a shootout ( 4 rounds ) and then went on to win their 3rd game 5-4 to claim the 50+ “A” consolation trophy. The teams next tournament is in MontTremblant at the end of January and then off to the Provincial 55+ championships which is being held in Coborg in February.

Kowen Hesse of Cornwall played his first year for the Wildcats in 2016 in the mosquito division. Kowen played Running back, and Receiver.

Cornwall Lions Club Handout CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Lions Club recently helped to sponsor two local athletes who are trying to make it up the ladder in girls Rugby in Canada. Sydney Seymour and Madison Grant each received $250 from the Lions Club to help them with their many expenses going forward. The girls will be attending the team Canada Winter Training Camp in Guelph. Both girls play rugby at St. Joe’s Secondary School as well as for the recently formed Cornwall Claymores Women’s Rugby team, both coached by Casey Leger.

Sydney recently returned from the New

York Sevens Tournament where she won gold playing for Eastern Ontario. Both Sydney and Madison play for the Ontario Provincial Sevens U17 girls program and hope to one day play for Canada, possibly at the Olympics. Upcoming Tournaments include the Las Vegas Sevens in March and possibly a tour to England in the spring.

Rugby has a long history in the Cornwall area, mostly on the men’s side. That is changing. Canada’s Women’s Rugby team is ranked in the top 3 in the world. It remains a minor sport locally, but hopefully with the success of local programs and players like Sydney and Madison, it will grow in the future.

The Holy Trinity alumni won the annual current students versus alumni basketball game at Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School on December 23.

The No. 9 sweater was not in use after Charlie Sands, who wore it the previous season, left the club early in training camp to join the Canadian army.

Another Richard milestone was marked the previous season when Richard was, believe it or not, trying to break into the Canadiens’ lineup.

The Canadiens were playing a pre-season game at the Cornwall Community Arena.

The 19-year-old Richard, inserted on a line with veterans Elmer Lach and Tony Demers, scored his first goal in a Canadiens’ uniform.

After the game Irvin was asked about the chances of Richard and another 19-year-old rookie, Bobby Carragher, cracking the NHL

THIS WEEK IN 1957 - Whitby Dunlops ended a five-game Ontario Hockey Association senior A winning streak by Cornwall Chevies with a 6-5 overtime victory at the Water Street Arena.

Mort Belmore and Bernie Limoges scored twice for the Chevies. Kitoute Joannette had the other goal. The game was played before a season high 1,770 fans.

Whitby’s Bobby Attersley led the league in scoring with 72 points on 24 goals and 48 assists. Cornwall’s Rheal Savard was sixth with 41 points on 15 goals and 26 assists. Cornwall’s Gerry Devaney had the league’s best goals against average - 2.53. Belleville Gordie Bell was second with 2.56.

Irvin didn’t venture too far out on the proverbial limb when it came to his two rookies.

“I still don’t know if we will be signing them, so how can I tell what their prospects are,” Irvin told Standard-Freeholder sports editor Jack Park.

A few days later Irvin would sign Richard to a contract that paid him $3,500 for the season. The contract didn’t include a bonus clause, or as they say in today’s world of multi-million dollar contracts ... an incentive

Before a kid called Gretzky came along, hockey’s most coveted sweater number was No. 9.

It seemed that all the great players - Howe, Hull, Richard - wore No. 9.

Wayne Gretzky wanted to carry on the tradition - his favourite player was Howe - but when he broke into the junior ranks, the number was taken. The coach suggested he double up. Thus the birth of double nines ... No. 99.

The first National Hockey League superstar to wear No. 9 was Maurice Richard, and if not for the birth of his daughter, Huguette, in October 1943, he would have played his career as No. 15.

There is a huge Cornwall connection to Richard’s switch to No. 9 from No. 15.

Richard was starting his second season with the Canadiens and the club was at the Cornwall Community Arena for a pre-season game against the Cornwall Army club which played in the Quebec Senior Hockey League.

That Cornwall team included George “Punch” Imlach.

Richard’s line mates included future hall of famers Toe Blake, Elmer Lach, Bill Durnan and Kenny Reardon.

After the game, which the Canadiens won 7-3 using the same line-up that would open the NHL season the next week, Richard received a telephone call at the arena box office. It was the hospital in Montreal calling to tell him his wife, 18-year-old Lucille, had given birth to a baby girl.

Back in the dressing room general manager Dick Irvin asked Richard what the baby girl weighed. When Richard said nine pounds, Irvin tossed him a sweater with No. 9 on it.

“Your baby weighed nine pounds, so I’m going to give the number 9 to you,” said Irvin.

“It was the perfect storm,” said owner CarolAnn Baxter. “The snow melted, but then it got cold, when I got out on the pond with my auger on Friday and saw that the ice was 11-inches thick I thought, we can do this.”

Opening the pond to skaters is something that Archie’s has been thinking about doing for

awhile. “It is absolutely something we would do again,” said Baxter. “Maintaining the ice on the pond is something the City used to do once upon a time. We’ve considered opening it the past couple of years, but the weather’s always been hit and miss. The way things are going, it could happen again next weekend.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall’s Canada 150 Committee has transformed Lamoureux Park into a winter wonderland in celebration of Canada’s 150th Birthday.

Besides the lights and horse-drawn sleigh rides there are also plenty of winter activities available for those who can brave the cold.

This includes tobogganing down the hills and slopes of Lamoureux Park.

Future sporting plans include creating outdoor skating rinks which will include changing rooms and places to get warm, as well as food.
