Locomotive #17 eyed for restoration nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
CORNWALL, Ontario - The Budget Committee heard a proposal to “stabilize” Cornwall’s Locomotive #17. Located on the corner of Brookdale Avenue and Ninth Street, the train was owned by Cornwall Street Railway, the precursor to Cornwall Transit. The locomotive was moved to its current location from in front of the Water Purification Plant in 2005 and in 2006, Cornwall City Council passed a by-law to give the locomotive a heritage designation. At the budget meeting, the Committee heard about the state of disrepair that the locomotive is in. “I was out at the locomotive and pieces of metal could just be pulled off,” said Bill de Wit, Municipal Works Division Manager. “Someone could get hurt.” The Municipal Works Department was
recommending that the Budget Committee approve $100, 000 to stabilize Locomotive #17 and prevent further degradation. de Wit said that re-painting the locomotive was previously estimated to cost $60, 000, however, this current proposal would not cover painting, only maintenance of the structure of the train. “There should be a poll to see if residents want to pay $100, 000 on that thing,” said Councillor Andre Rivette, previously calling the locomotive an “eyesore.” However, because of the City by-law designating Locomotive #17 as a part of Cornwall’s heritage, Council has committed itself to maintaining the train. The by-law protecting the train could be repealed if two-thirds of Council were in favour of dropping their support for the train. Councillor Elaine MacDonald raised the possibility of moving the train to Lamoureux Park, but de Wit recommended consulting with the Waterfront Committee first. As it is now, there are signs on Locomotive #17

the moment I read it, I said to myself, “If you don’t want heritage matters to be expensive, fix them as they become an issue, not decades after the fact.” I believe this situation needs to be viewed as an example. In my eyes, this Locomotive represents the exact issue Cornwall has faced for many years.” “Cornwall has lost many of it’s heritage properties to fires and other unpredictable tragedies, but it has lost a lot of it’s properties to neglect, lack of care, and lack of vision” she continued. “I can list countless examples of properties I believe should still be standing in this city, but aren’t: Cornwall’s beautiful Post Office (at Pitt and Second), the Cornwallis Hotel, and many will argue that the Capitol Theatre could be on this list. When I see a piece of history like Locomotive #17 that has been sitting in the same area of town for the last twenty years, and learn that it may be used as scrap metal, my mind shifts to everything Cornwall has lost. We do not need to lose more historic properties or artifacts. We need to learn how to save them.”

warning the public against climbing on it and de Wit foresees the possibility of fencing the train off. In an open letter published in Seaway News Cornwall’s Little Historian Sara Lauzon made the case for saving the train. In her statement she outlined how so much of Cornwall’s history has already been let go. “When I saw what the budget needed in order to repair the Locomotive (estimated around $100,000), I shook my head,” she wrote. “Some Councillors were unhappy with the number, but in

A Community hero Christmas for United Way

The United Way supports a long list of community organizations in SD&G. When they kicked off their fundraising campaign for this season they set a goal of $700, 000, every cent of which will stay in the local area. To reach their goal, the United Way has some great fundraising event s planned between now and December 16, however none of these would be possible without the support of the Community Heroes who help the United Way of SD&G. “We have a hero theme this year because we recognize that it is really the support that we get from volunteers that allows us to operate,” said United Way of SD&G Executive Director Lori Greer. “A lot of heroes have stepped forward to support us with volunteer work and great third party events.” One staple event organized by the United Way of SD&G is the annual Christmas Celebration Sleigh. This year the Celebration Sleigh will be featured at Backstrom’s Grocers from Nov. 17 to Dec. 16. The sleigh will be packed with $5, 000 worth of goods. People can buy tickets to be entered into a draw to win the entire sleigh. Tickets are $3 each or $10 for a whole book. All prizes in the sleigh were donated from local individuals and businesses. On December 9, the United Way will be encouraging everyone to take part in their Ugly John Baxtrom stands with the co-chair and chair of the United Way’s 2016 fundraising campaign Pauline Bray and Bill Makinson at Sweater Day. Be spirited away by this new stage adaption of Lewis Carroll’s “Alice Through The Looking Glass.” Dream Maker Productions, in their 25th anniversary year brings to stage this endearing and whimsical adventure with a talented cast. But just think about it this group has given young people the chance to act in shows with lead parts such as Annie, Grease, Aladdin, Frozen, to name only a few. Over the years 17 young people came out of this group to make it onto the big screen or act professionally on stage. Stefanie True, Martin Van Helden, Nick Merizzi, Ron Thompson, Ryan Gosling, again just to name a few. One of the secrets that has helped propel many local actors to the professional stage is that the people running the show are professionals and who have worked in the business.

CORNWALL, Ontario - It will now be easier for St. Lawrence College students to study abroad at Mexican Polytechnic Universities. St. Lawrence College Senior Vice President, Advancement and Business Development, Gordon MacDougall and Raul Martinez Hernandez, President of the National Association of Technological Universities of Mexico (ANUT) signed a new agreement on Friday. The agreement will expand on existing joint projects between St. Lawrence College and Mexican Polytechnic Universities such as co-op studies, exchange of academic material and scholarships for Mexican teachers to learn at St. Lawrence College. “This agreement is about creating opportunities for St. Lawrence students to learn together with students from Mexico in classrooms both at home and abroad,” said Don Young, Dean of International Education at St. Lawrence College. There is also the possibility of the creation of dual credentials between St. Lawrence College and their partners in Mexico. “We value our partnership with Mexican Polytechnics and we look forward to expanding our relationship with Mexico,” said Gordon MacDougall, Senior Vice President, Advancement and Business Development. The National Association of Technological Universities of Mexico represents 114 Polytechnic Universities across Mexico. Almost 1400 international students are enrolled in St. Lawrence College programs in Ontario this year. An additional 400 students are taking St. Lawrence College programs in China.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A familiar face on Cornwall Transit has decided to hang it up. After a 28 year career, popular Cornwall Transit driver Gilles Lafrance has decided to retire. Well known as the driver of the Pitt-McConnell bus route, Lafrance stepped off the bus and into retirement at the Downtown transfer stop on the morning of Wednesday, Nov.16. His family, representatives from the City and some of his regular passengers were there to meet and congratulate him. For Lafrance, the people are what he says he will miss the most. “The people and the drivers,” he said. “We are like family. We enjoy the company.” The most difficult thing Lafrance said that he faced over his career, was staying on time. Lafrance’s old boss Transit Manager Len Tapp praised him as being not only one of the longest serving drivers, but also one of the most popular. “You couldn’t ask for a better employee,” said Tapp. “He is friendly with everyone and he just loved his job.” Lafrance is a regular volunteer with the Knights of Columbus and the Army Navy Air Force Club. In retirement Lafrance said he hopes to spend more time volunteering with these organizations and traveling with his wife, Diane.
Gilles Lafrance and his wife Diane celebrate his retirement on Wednesday, Nov. 16.

CORNWALL, Ontario - An excited crowd packed into the Royal Bank of Canada branch on Pitt Street in Cornwall to hear the announcement from former Maple Leaf and Team Canadaalumni Wendel Clark that Cornwall would host an IIHF World Junior Championship pre-competition game. The game will be on Dec. 19 and will see Sweden faceoff against Slovakia at the Ed Lumley Arena. In addition to the game one team will be spending eight days training in Cornwall. Cornwall is just one of eight cities across Ontario and Quebec that will host 10
in Cornwall and Brockville on November 26th 9-1pm
pre-competition games for this year’s World Juniors tournament. Wendel Clark himself is a former World Junior hockey player in addition to his long tenure with the Toronto Maple Leafs. He told the crowd that the World Junior tournament was a showcase of great hockey and said that the standards to make the team were so stringent, that in the year he played, two current NHL Hall of Famers did not make the cut. RBC also took the time to announce its Canada 150 initiative. RBC will be giving 100 young Cornwallites $150 with the only caveat being that they use the money to do something good for their community. Canada 150 is RBC’s way of marking the 150th anniversary of the Confederation of Canada.

Legion hosts Tory leadership candidates
CORNWALL, Ontario - As the race ramps up to replace our former Prime Minister and leader of the Conservative Party of Canada, Stephen Harper, half of the declared candidates made their way to Cornwall the morning of Saturday, Nov.19. The Conservative riding association organized a breakfast for the leadership contenders and local supporters. The event had around 300 attendees, who were treated to a breakfast supplied by the Royal Canadian Legion. Twelve candidates have formally entered the race for leader of the Conservative Party. Only six of the official twelve made their way to the Cornwall for Saturday’s breakfast. Not in attendance were perceived front runners Andrew Scheer, who leads in caucus endorsements and Maxime Bernier, who is leading the pack in fundraising. Many of the names to take to the stage at the Royal Canadian Legion are familiar to Canadians who paid attention to the Harper Government. Lisa Raitt, Chris Alexander, Brad Trost, Kellie Leitch, Steven Blaney, and Michael Chong all spoke to the crowd, presenting the core message of their platforms, or recalling fond memories of visiting Cornwall and their work alongside the
MP for Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry (SDSG), Guy Lauzon. “I’m just so satisfied with the event,” said Lauzon. “They spoke so well, and I’m so proud of them...each and everyone of those candidates is more qualified than the current Prime Minister. It’s so hard to decided because we have twelve candidates, and it’s just beginning and it’s going to be so exciting.” Lauzon has served as chairman of the Conservative Caucus since 2008, when the Harper led Conservative Party edged out its second minority government. With six candidates taking the stage, a wide range of issues for many conservatives were presented at the podium. The most recent proposals to gain popular attention have been Kellie Leitch’s, following the election of U.S. Presidentelect Donald Trump. “When we have the opportunity to have that face-to-face interview, that person has the opportunity to learn to more about us,” said Kellie Leitch, who gained national attention during the 2015 election campaign for her advocacy of a barbaric practices snitch-line. Her campaign has decided to focus largely on social conservative issues surrounding Canadian identity. “What a warm welcome! Guy out-did himself making sure that some of his constituents would

have a chance to speak with some of the candidates,” said MP Lisa Raitt, who served under several portfolios during the Harper Government. “We are proposing one of the largest income tax cuts in history,” said MP for Wellinton-Halton Hills, Michael Chong. Chong gained national attention for his reform bill, which would have limited the power of the Prime Minister in relation to Parliament. The Conservative Party did pass Chong’s bill, but with amendments which softened many of Chong’s stances on improving
democratic institutions in Canada. All members of the Conservative Party of Canada who intend to vote for leader must be members in good standing by March of 2017, and have been members for six months. The direction which the Conservatives go following their electoral defeat a little over one year ago could have serious implications on the lives of not only Canadians who support the Tories, but also the the Liberals and NDP. The final tally is scheduled for May 27, 2017.

OPINION
The silver screen unshackled The puritanical padlock on Cornwall movie theatre doors (Palace, Capitol and Roxy) was busted open on Dec. 5, 1960 when city residents voted yes for Sunday movies. It was, considering the liquor restrictions, heavily regulated shopping hours and ban on Sunday sports in more communities than naught in the province, a huge leap forward. By way of a bylaw passed a month earlier by city council, the Sunday movie issue was placed on the local municipal election ballot, along with another, more routine, plebiscite on extending the contract with St. Lawrence Power and Cornwall Street Railway Light and Power Company to supply power in the city for another three years. The drive to allow movie theatres to open on Sundays in Ontario started in Toronto with the labour council pushing that city council to put the question to voters. For years theatre workers opposed working on Sundays. However, theatre attendance started to decline, and with it theatre revenue and jobs, with the popularity of television in the 1950s. Suddenly theatre workers changed their minds on keeping the doors locked on Sundays. In all, some 10 municipalities put the question on the 1960 municipal election ballot. Only two, Kitchener and Newmarket, rejected Sunday movies. It passed in Brantford, but barely, a razor-thin 120 vote margin. Not so in Cornwall. It wasn’t even close. A total of 10,800 approved Sunday movies. Only 2,466 said no. When it came to the Sunday movie question, Cornwall scored the biggest lopsided victory in the province. Local and area evangelical churches opposed the proposal, claiming that it would contribute to further moral decay and would lure folks out of the pews. The Motion Picture Theatre Association of Ontario offered statements from Roman Catholic, Lutheran and Anglican church leaders in New York State and Quebec that Sunday movies in other jurisdictions had not affected church attendance. The association pointed out that movies were shown on television on Sundays, and
activities such as golfing and swimming, even church picnics, took place on Sundays. It was a stretch, but the pro-sabbath movie campaign even mention gardening on Sundays. “These people (opponents) can hardly object to Sunday movies,” said the association. Perhaps somewhat prophetically, the association suggested that church attendance was facing bigger social obstacles than Sunday movies. *************** If you were a Baby Boomer growing up in Cornwall during the Fifties and Sixties, you probably have memories of the A &W on Vincent Massey Drive, when carhops took orders and delivered mamma and papa burgers and root beer in frosty mugs on trays. (Just so you don’t stay awake wondering about this, A & W was started in 1923 by Californians Roy W. Allen and Frank Wright, thus A and W. In the 1970s A & W franchises in Canada outnumbered McDonald’s). Local businessman Charles Lawn, who also brought Kentucky Fried Chicken to Cornwall (first store on Augustus Street) and opened the city’s first motel on Second Street West (then Highway 2), launched the curb-service eatery in the late 1950s, shortly after the company arrived in Canada. A canopy ran from the front of the store down the middle of the parking lot. Bob McGillivary recalls the carhops wearing roller skates the first year or two and the place being a gathering mecca for local teens, especially on Friday and Saturday evenings, sometimes, in the summer at least, on the return from across the pond. Wayne Lauber remembers as a kid riding his bicycle from Dunbar Avenue to the A &W on a hot summer day to cash in his free coupon for a small root beer at the take-out window. Somebody else remembers one of the local musicians standing outside his car on a warm summer night and serenading customers with tunes on his saxophone. Ron and Doreen D’Alessio took over the business in 1985 and a couple of years later changed it over to an eat-in restaurant, ending the curb service and its winter weather challenges.
Another curb-service A & W opened on Pitt Street (now Lola’s Pub) but by then the curbservice fad was fading. The Vincent Massey operation closed last week, giving way to a new A & W (and new owner) on Ninth Street West. TRIVIA ANSWER Dover’s Men’s Wear was a long-time fixture on the southeast corner of Pitt and Second streets. It was owned by the Dover family of Cornwall. It’s signature line was the Dover coat. Founder Archie Dover was a prominent member of the local Jewish community. TRIVIA This family-owned supermarket was at 365 Eleventh St. E. . THIS WEEK IN 1960 Registration for Cornwall Minor Hockey Association closed with a record 1,012 players, an increase of 400 from the previous season. Division breakdown was atom 250, peewee 302, bantam 266, midget 117, juvenile 49. Season was set to start on Dec. 10, if outdoor rinks were ready. .... YM-YWCA announced that construction of a new building on Fifth Street East between Marlborough and Gloucester streets would begin in the spring. It would replace the building on First Street West. ....The municipal election race was launched with 30 candidates vying for seats in the six wards. In the mayoral race, L.G. She had the highest average in Grade 13. ... In YMCA youth basketball play, Borden Harrington had 14
points as the Eagles defeated the Sparks 28-23. Ian Nurse and Danny Rabbin each scored 14 points as Y Club defeated Y’s Guys 33-10. ... Lalonde’s Market, 14 Marlborough St., celebrating its anniversary, had t-bone steaks on sale for 78 cents a pound. HERE AND THERE Is there a more dysfunctional municipal council than what they have in Sarnia? The mayor, Mike Bradley, who has been mayor for 28 years, has been accused of bullying four female department heads who packed up and quit. Two investigations - by the integrity commish and a human resources consultant - found the mayor guilty of harassment and bullying. Back in June city council docked the mayor three-months pay and booted him out of his city hall office for 90 days. And now he has been banned from entering city hall after hours and on weekends. Bradley discovered that his pass card had been revoked when he showed up at city hall on a Saturday with some out-of-town guests. Talk about an embarrassment. ... Tale of two health care systems. Massena Memorial Hospital is eliminating its red ink by increasing business (aka patients). In Ontario hospitals eliminate deficits by discouraging business (aka patients). ... Now that she has clued in to the fact that a lot of Ontarians are angry over her government’s bungling of the energy portfolio, Preem Kathy plans to visit every riding in the province to bend her ear to concerns over skyrocketing hydro bills. She might add school closings and ridiculously long hours on buses to her talking points.

OPINION
The Christmas spirit of Cornwall Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
This past week truly felt like the start of the Christmas season and not just because of the parades, lightshows and charity events. Those events were the results of the efforts of many different and selfless people in our community. Maxville saw a spectacular light show organized by a group of volunteers on Saturday evening and the very next day, Alexandria had its Santa Claus parade. It was hard to miss the Christmas season festivities in Cornwall on Saturday. It all started with the Fourth Annual Santa Street Hockey Challenge.
The hockey tournament was organized by Officer Rob McIntosh and other members of the Cornwall Community Police Service working in their spare-time. An event like this street hockey tournament really brings the community together by inviting them to get involved in healthy activity and team work. This is especially important for young members of the community, who were the ones invited to participate in this street hockey tournament. Later Saturday evening Cornwall saw on display the efforts of Terry Muir and a large team of volunteers who made another great Santa Claus parade this year. There were 55 floats this year that demon-

strated the great depth of imagination and creativity that our community is capable of. Community members along the path of the parade route were happy to do a little extra to make the event special, like how Andre Pommier opened Pommier Square as a fun zone for kids to go. Not only was there live music and games, but also, it was the perfect place to watch Santa go by. There were floats from the movie Frozen floats dedicated to Lego and Star Wars and all floats were invited back to the Civic Complex after the event for a warm meal and awards ceremony. Let’s not forget that this past weekend was just the beginning of the Christmas season, there
are many more important community events to come. One such ongoing event is the United Way of SD&G’s Christmas Celebration Sleigh. Ticket purchases support the United Way, who support a wide range of great causes in our community, which I would argue is more valuable than even the prospect of winning the contents of the sleigh. Community and caring is the true meaning of the Christmas season. So as you celebrate Christmas this year, remember, celebrate it together, with each other and with your community.

South Glengarry still refuses to do a legal Plan of Survey did they locate. His answer was one on the Road Allowance. Then Norman Genier replied he located nine buternut trees on the Road Allowance and also he marked off in total 62 trees not to be removed. So what does that tell you about their professional tree inspector? Now this takes us back to the land surveyor tying ribbons in the trees, how accurate can
that be? I asked Gary MacDonaldhow they were locating the Unopen Road Allowance, by GPS he answered saying that they were using my land survey markings at the East end lining up with the land survey markings in the West end. So what about the centre? They’re using an imaginary line. That’s why they’re trespassing on land owner’s property because the road is not in a straight line.
Also, when you use a GPS in a bush they’re not accurate, they can be off by three-to-ten feet so do I need to say more. The Township’s own by-law 33-14 Schedule “A” states: Surveys may be required to confirm that the proposed use will not encroach on adjacent privately owned lands. Roger St. Denis, Summerstown

Your cooperation with snow removal is very much appreciated. * Trucks with flashing blue lights are performing winter maintenance. Please give them room to work and pass with caution as visibility may be compromised with blowing snow. * Park your vehicle in your driveway, well off the road, until street and sidewalk cleaning operations are complete. This allows our crews to do their job and make the streets and sidewalks safe for everyone. * Current policy states that the Public Works Department will only replace a mailbox if the post, or box has a direct hit from the Township’s snowplow. Creating cards for CHEO kids CORNWALL, Ontario - A young Our Lady of Good Counsel student Ella Ha, 12, is doing her best to make the lives of her fellow kids at the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario (CHEO) a little bit better. She is doing this by selling Christmas cards and donating the proceeds to CHEO. Ella started her charity work four years ago, at the age of 9. “I felt bad for the kids in CHEO,” said Ella. “I haven’t experienced CHEO, but it must stink being sick.” Ella sells her cards at the local chiropractor’s office, after mass at church and at
school. The money goes to fund therapeutic animals at CHEO and other types of treatment. In her first year, Ella sold 290 cards, last year that number rose to 700 and she is hoping for even more this year. The cards take quite a bit of work to to prepare every year. This year, Ella spent four to six weeks getting her cards ready for sale, this included composing a little poem on the front of one of the designs. Ella has been recognized for her hard work with a CogecoT V Community Achievement Award that was presented to her this past Spring, and with a Purple Cape from CHEO.
Ella Ha holds one of her cards at her home. Ella sells Christmas cards and gives the proceeds to help sick kids at CHEO (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News).
New Long Sault construction to serve seniors needs w
An artists rendition of the new seniors apartment residence. Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
The new apartment structure being built in Long Sault will be geared towards serving the needs of South Stormont Seniors. The four-storey, 22 unit apartment building is being built by Ewan St. Louis Construction and is expected to be completed sometime in May.
“Our first intent for the building was to accommodate seniors I the area, because right now there isn’t anything that we know of,” said Ewan St. Louis. “This building is designed and geared towards seniors who maybe don’t want the expense of maintaining a home or are living alone.” There will be five apartments located on the main floor that will be barrier free and promote ease of access for seniors with mobility issues. There will be four elevators in the building and a large common area to help maintain a community environment. Additionally, outdoors there will be a large green area with gardens for those residents who might have a green thumb. Anyone interested in applying for an apartment in the new building should contact Ewan St. Louis Construction at 613-534-2717

NOTICE OF STUDY COMMENCEMENT Highway 401 Improvements from Cornwall to Lancaster GWP 4328-11-00
NEWS First Annual Bed Race
THE STUDY The Ministry of Transportation of Ontario (MTO) has initiated a detail design study for the replacement / rehabilitation of culverts on Highway 401 from Cornwall Centre Road to County Road 34 and the resurfacing of Highway 401 from 0.7 km east of Boundary Road to 0.6 km west of County Road 34. The study limits are shown in the key map below. The detail design includes replacement / rehabilitation of culverts and resurfacing of approximately 17 km of Highway 401 within the project limits. Asphalt and concrete repairs are included in the resurfacing strategy for this section of Highway 401. Crack repairs near the Boundary Road eastbound lane on-ramp will require a temporary on-ramp closure of approximately 2 weeks duration. Repairs near the Summerstown Road east and westbound lane on/off-ramps will require temporary ramp closures of up to 2 days per ramp, with the exception of the eastbound off-ramp, which will require a ramp closure of 1 week duration. The culvert replacement / rehabilitation and resurfacing works are anticipated to be completed in 2017.
Le Citadelle was the winning team in the schools division of the bed race. They also received a cheque for $500. Pictured are Lion Bill Swinden and students Amede Fontaine, Jorik Callan, Vincent Bourdeau, Joel Carriere, Malcolm Would and Ryan Snetsinger. The Cornwall Lions Club recently held the First Annual Bed Race Competition on Pitt St. to raise funds for some of it’s many community minded initiatives. The inaugural race was won by Blue Beacon Truck Wash who went home with a $500 prize. In the student division, Ecole Secondaire La Citadelle won, pushing a bed for Schnitzel’s European Flavours Restaurant. They also won a prize of $500 for their school. In total,
20 beds were raced for local businesses. All teams showed great spirit and enthusiasm, as well as strong endurance. Blue Beacon Truck wash won the award for the most spirited team while “O2 to Go” scuba diving club had the best decorated bed. The competition was followed by a dance Saturday evening at the civic Complex. The Lions Club plan to host this event annually, so start planning for next year.

Santa Claus Arrives in Cornwall Heather Armstrong, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - Santa arrived in Cornwall Saturday Nov. 19. There were events on all day, but it was evening parade, which cumulated with Santa arriving on his sleigh, that captured spirit of the season. For the young and old it is the parade in which they look forward to. Drawn by the music and light show provided by Xtreme Soundzz DJ Service (owner Matt McGrath), people started arriving at Pommier Square shortly after 4pm to wait for Santa. McGrath kept everybody in a festive mood until
just before the first of over 55 floats arrived near Second and Pitts Streets. Most of the youngsters said they wanted to see Santa. Early arrivals Katelynn and MacKayla Flynt said they wanted to see the gymnasts and to see Santa. In a chorus they said, “We love the gymnasts!” This year the theme of the parade was a Disney Christmas. Many of the parade participants followed the theme by included characters from Frozen’s Elsa Anna Kristoff and Olaf, Lego, and Star Wars to name a few. After the parade the awards were announced at the Civic Complex. The judges Kirsten Coleman, Kayla Gaudet, Jack Lebel,
Tana Montgomery, Gail Montgomery and Stephanie Levac decided on this year’s winners. • Best Business/Service: Lowes Home Improvement • Service/Non: Profit Group: Glendalers Winter Sports Club • Small Float: (Under 20 Feet) Mrs. Claus • Dancing Group: Powell School of Dance • Fitness Group: Zumba Kids with Adele and Jasmine • School: Longue Sault Public • Local Band: Garde de la Nativite • Visiting Band: Royal West Academy • Equestrian: Donna Wilson and Bernie McPhail

Some varieties of hummus under recall
nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc
Nick Seebruch
CORNWALL, Ontario - According to the United States Food & Drug Administration (FDA), hummus producer the Sabra Dipping Company has recalled some of their humus products. Their products are sold in stores throughout Canada and the U.S. The fear is that these types of hummus have been exposed to the Listeria bacteria which is undetectable by smell or taste, but can still cause serious illness and in some cases, death. The bacteria, Listeria monocytogenes, was identified in Sabra’s manufacturing facility but the products were not tested. Listeria is dangerous for the young, elderly and pregnant women. Symptoms of a Listeria infection include: high fever, severe headaches, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain and diarrhea. The products that are suspected of contamination were packaged before Nov. 8 and have expiration dates up to Jan. 23, 2017. The flavours of hummus named in the recall include, but are not limited to the popular flavours of: Classic, Garlic, Supremely Spicy, Red Pepper and Pine Nut. See the full list of recalled hummus products here. The FDA recommends that anyone who suspects that their hummus is contaminated with Listeria to discard it immediately.

AVIS DE DÉBUT D’ÉTUDE Améliorations sur l’autoroute 401 de Cornwall à Lancaster GWP 4328-11-00
38 985 exemplaires

www.cornwallseawaynews.com - Seaway News - Le jeudi 24 novembre, 2016 - 29

Stella Giroux (1927-2016)
Many thanks to all (family, friends, students) who supported us through these difficult times. After so many years of dedication to the Schizophrenia Society of Ontario, it is fitting that in her name, all your donations will continue her mission of educating and removing the stigma for families and research to find the causes and alleviate the suffering. Our mother loved people and they loved her too. She will be missed.

Optimist Toy Drive has launched Heather Armstrong, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - The Optimist Club of Cornwall has launched its Annual Optimist Toy Drive on Tuesday, Nov, 15 at the Bud Guilbeault Youth Center in Optimist Park. This year the Optimist Club hopes to collect 3, 000 toys for 1, 500 children in need in the area. One of the major initiatives of the Toy Drive is the Angel Trees. These trees are decorated with angels. Each angel indicates the age and gender of a child for whom the gift is designated. People are asked to choose an angel from the tree and pur-
chase gift for a child of that age and gender. Although there are numerous businesses already requesting a tree this year, there is always room for more community support. Ralph Brunton, President of the Optimist Club of Cornwall explained his club coordinates with the Salvation Army and Sparkys’ to provide these gifts to the children. He said, “The families that receive the food (from the Children’s Christmas Fund Food drive), the children get toys.” Anita Tremblay, Chair of the Toy Drive said, “It’s all about the kids, this (the Toy Drive) is our big thing.” With that in mind she has drafted a letter to be sent out to local business asking for support.
As part of the Toy Drive Brunton explained a Teddy Bear Toss is planned on Dec. 1 at the Colts game. The bears acquired from the toss will be added to the other gifts. All of the unwrapped gifts must be received before Dec. 14 to allow for sorting and organizing before the distribution date of Dec. 20. The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario is providing warehouse space on Campbell Street for the sorting and storage of toys. Brunton also said, “We are looking for Volunteer Elves to help distribute the gifts.” To volunteer for the Toy Drive contact Anita Tremblay Chair, Optimist Toy Drive anita_tremblay@hotmail.com
Fire Fighter Ian McDonald, Anita Tremblay Toy Drive Chair, Sparky, Ralph Brunton President Optinist Club of Cornwall and Captain James McDobald with some toys for the Optinist Club of Cornwall Toy Drive.

ID ten t eRROR
I was having trouble with my computer. So I called David, the 11 year old next door whose bedroom looks like Mission Control, and asked him to come over. David clicked a couple of buttons and solved the problem. As he was walking away, I called after him, “So, what was wrong?” He replied, “It was an ID ten T error.” I didn’t want to appear stupid, but nonetheless inquired, “An ID Ten T error? What’s that? In case I need to fix it again.” David grinned, “Haven’t you ever heard of an ID ten T error before?” “No”, I replied. “Write it down,” he said, “and I think you’ll figure it out.” So I wrote down: I D 1 0 T I used to like that little boy.

The Alexandria Legion had a dedication ceremony for Patrick Golding on Remembrance Day. Golding was the long time head of the Alexandria Legion branch and the bell in front of the Legion Hall was dedicated in his honour. Golding passed away in Sept. 2015. Norman Moore of Alexandria turned 100 last month. Originally from the Eastern Townships, Moore moved to Alexandria in 1982 to be closer to his children. Congratulations Norman on a long and happy life. With the holiday season upon us, please make sure you “party” responsibly. If you drink, don’t drive! The Cornwall Lions Club recently donated $2,700 to Hospice Cornwall with the proceeds they made from the 50/50 draw they ran at the Cornwall Ribfest. A photo has been sent to Nick Seebruck via email of the cheque presentation. The following people are in the photo. Pet Tip of the Week: Protect your pets from holiday hazards by making sure that your Christmas tree is secure by wiring the tip to a ceiling hook to avoid crashes caused by curious cats. Keep your tree stand covered to prevent animals from drinking from it; liquefied pine sap can be poisonous. Hang plastic or metal ornaments from the tree’s lower branches, fragile glass and wooden ones higher up. Routinely check the floor for stray ornament hooks. Avoid using strands of tinsel, which are easy for cats and dogs to eat and can clog or wrap around the digestive tract, which may cause death. Let’s help keep our furry friends safe and happy! While you’re out doing some Christmas
shopping, why not start a Christmas box for the animals at the Cornwall Animal Shelter? Pick up a few extra cans of pet food or treats when shopping for your special pet so that all the Shelter animals can enjoy Christmas too. Drop them off at the Shelter at 550 Boundary Road. “All for the animals.”

With the Advent season upon us, why not start a new family tradition? Treat your Kristkindl to special kindnesses that do not require money to show your love. Find a cherished photograph and make a special frame for it. College students and new families, especially those far away, should also be included in your thoughtfulness. Send a care package each week, including anything from cookies to mittens.

NICK DIMAKIS
General Manager I have been the General Manager of the Caisse populaire de Cornwall since July 2016. If we have not had the chance to meet or if our paths have not yet crossed, here is some information about me: EDUCATION I have a bachelor’s degree in Finance (Accounting) from Concordia University. I am a Chartered Investment Manager (CIM) from the Canadian Securities Institute, and a Financial Planner from the Institut québécois de planification financière (IQPF). EXPERIENCE I have been working in the financial services industry for over 23 years, including 11 years as a manager at Desjardins Group. ROLE I work with the local community leaders of Cornwall to develop and support social and economic initiatives. I am also responsible for making sure the Caisse plays a key role in making decisions and developing ideas to build a better tomorrow. Since every member has specific needs, I make sure the Caisse is able to offer them the products and services they need to attain their dreams, regardless of their stage in life.
COMMITMENT I am committed to being proactive regarding the needs of current and future members. I will also make sure the Caisse works closely with all of our Desjardins partners to offer the best service possible. I am very proud to work with such an amazing team here at the Caisse that is committed to our current and future members, as well as our community’s best interests. Members, employees and the community of Cornwall will always be able to count on my unwavering commitment and dedication.
CHALLENGES In recent years, Desjardins has introduced innovative technology that makes managing members personal finances easier. Thanks to these initiatives, members are able to do their banking over the phone, online or using their mobile device. Through these various ways, members can now do business with the Caisse, plus with the Desjardins Member Advantages program and the new lifecycle approach make for an even better experience for our members. My team is always willing and available to inform members on what is new and help guide them through these changes.
I want the Caisse to develop win-win partnerships that will have a positive impact on business relationships, community and economic relations.
ASSETS I believe that in order to succeed you have to put people first in everything you do and channel positive energy to inspire trust. By accomplishing this, we will support our members so they can achieve all their goals and dreams. With a team of qualified and dedicated individuals, I plan to pursue the efforts already undertaken to deliver high-end, accessible financial services that exceed the expectations of our members.
Feel free to come in for a visit or to just say hello if you see me. I am really looking forward to getting to know you better!
