International Day of the Girl turns local attention to global issues Shannon Ferguson, Special to TC Media CORNWALL, Ontario - It was an evening of girl power and positive energy on Thursday at La Citadelle Secondary School as the community came together to celebrate the International Day of the Girl. In its fifth year, the annual event hosted girls ages 8-16 and featured 15 empowering and engaging workshops which brought attention to some of the issues that affect young women worldwide. Committee chair Maxine LeBlanc said

“This day is meant to help girls work on their self-esteem and develop their interests while giving them diverse avenues to do so”. While their daughters attended the workshops, parents were invited to attend educational sessions lead by local professionals with information on issues affecting young girls today. Some of the workshops available included coding and video game design, self defense, yoga, TV production, vision board creation, and Be-YOU-Tiful—which was all about embracing unique beauty and increasing body confidence. One bilingual workshop—Pound—run by

Stephanie Thibault of ‘Partir de Bon Pas”, focused on rhythmic exercise using drumsticks. Girls were able to tap into their musical side while also getting a work out. “The physical aspect of this workshop was really important and a reason we wanted to be involved and get girls moving” said Thibault, whose daughter Danika was also participating in the event. “I think a day like this is very important because it really empowers her to be all she can be. The world really isn’t where it needs to be but days like this really help” added Thibault. The international event was established

by the United Nations and is a global effort which brings awareness to issues facing girls and young women, including gender equality, aiming to ensure a world free of discrimination for females. Leblanc explained one of the messages given girls is to “Do what you want to do in life and don’t let your gender stop you”. This year’s Cornwall celebration was organized by area agencies including Maison Interlude House, SASS, Maison Baldwin House, l’Équipe Psycho-Sociale, Big Brother Big Sister of Cornwall & District, and the Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Pommier Jewelers now has a piano in their Square that is open to the public to play. Pommier took the piano because it was going to be thrown away anyway. “The lady who gave it to us said it was either that we take it or that it was going to get the sledgehammer,” said Andre Pommier. Pommier said that he’s been pleased with the reaction so far from the community. “A man came by yesterday and played on the Andre Pommier plays the piano outside piano for an hour,” he said. “People would come his store at Pommier Square on the corner by and stop and listen. I want people to come of Pitt Street and Second Street on a mild and see this piano and play it. I want people from October day (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News). Schnitzels to feel like they can come over and we could have a crowd in this Square listening to arrives to better preserve it. Pommier also asked anyone with any knowmusic from this piano.” He did say however that he was considering ledge of how to better preserve a piano outdoors putting the piano away once the colder weather to come forward.

The Ontario Fire Code requires that smoke alarms be maintained in operating condition at all times. Smoke alarms should be maintained in accordance with the manufacturer’s instructions. Occasional light vacuuming will keep the air vents clean. On battery powered units, check to see that the battery is in place, connected, not corroded and functioning. Although the test frequency is not prescribed in the Ontario Fire Code, smoke alarms should be tested on a regular basis. Some manufacturers and authorities recommend that smoke alarms be tested at least once a month. Additional information on smoke alarm maintenance, particularly in rental accommodation, is available in the OFM guideline “Maintenance of Smoke Alarms.”

What to do if there is a

fire in your apartment?

• Tell everyone in your apartment to leave. • Close all doors behind you. • Pull the fire alarm on your floor and yell ‘fire’. • Leave the building using the nearest stairway. • Call the fire department when you are safe. • Meet the firefighters when they arrive and tell them where the fire is.

How many smoke alarms should I have in my home?

The Ontario Fire Code requires a smoke alarm that meets CAN/ULCS531 between each sleeping area and the remainder of the building. The Office of the Fire Marshal recommends that homeowners install one smoke alarm on every level of their home and outside all sleeping areas. For maximum protection, we suggest installing a smoke alarm in every room.

It is the consumer’s responsibility to assess the circumstances of their household and to select the most appropriate alarm However, an important consideration in the purchase of a smoke alarm is conformance to a recognized standard. In Ontario, CAN/ULC-S531 is the recognized standard for both the ionization and photoelectric types of alarms. Both ionization and photoelectric type products conforming to this standard are available on the market. A homeowner will know that a smoke alarm meets the requirements of this standard by the ULC or cUL label on the device.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Many great talents were on display Saturday for the third annual This Ability of Mine Showcase at the RCAF wing on Water street. The This Ability of Mine Showcase provided the Cornwall community with the chance to view and experience the many amazing talents which often go unnoticed by the general public. From crafts, to WWE figure collections, dioramas made to scale, a collection of Harry Potter based collectors items, to the musical stylings of Jean and Cameron, there was enough on display to keep crowds entertained. “It’s 100 per cent theirs,” said lead organizer Art Levert. “And, it’s awesome...there is a lot to be seen.” For literature lovers, Patsy was on hand to display her progress on her novel, Midnight Rider, with pages on display for passersby to check out. The well researched, Western style novel provides lessons on bullying, while remaining within the realms of historical accuracy and cultural sensitivity. “It’s the kind of book you can read one chapter to your children,” said Levert. Fans and alumni from Char-Lan will be proud to know that one of the showcasers, Jean, was around to spread the high school’s sports team, The Rebels, and sell some of his original paintings. Both Cameron, who is in the process of writing a Harry Potter inspired script, and Jean performed for the crowd. Also returning to this year’s showcase, Jean M displayed some of his scale models, built from memory, of the St. Hubert kitchen, the Brockville McDonald’s restaurant, and his own home. Special to Levert, Jean M’s detail heavy scale models acted as the original inspiration for Levert to organize the show in 2013. For the first time, the showcase was proud to also feature the craftworks of the folks from Different Abilities, which currently operates out of the old general hospital. Different Abilities provides an outlet for people with non-normative abilities to keep busy and connect with their community. Helen Horvath began Different Abilities after she found a need, based on her experiences in Cornwall, concerning her daughter. “It’s just a great place to not feel like ‘that

Lend me a Tenor coming to Dream Builder

nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

Nick Seebruch

CORNWALL, Ontario - Producer Lise Richer, Co-Producer Peter Labelle, Director Cathy Durham and the crew of the Seaway Valley Theatre Company are working to bring another one of Ken Ludwig’s works to the Dream Builder stage in Cornwall. Lend me a Tenor is a dramatic comedy set in Cleveland, Ohio in 1934. The story centres around a Cleveland opera company which anxiously awaits the arrival of a major star for an upcoming show. Through a series of mishaps, the star of the production is taken out of the picture at the last minute, and a last minute look-a-like needs to be found. While the setup sounds humourous, Director Cathy Durham assures that the themes of the play are mature. “Hilarity is the middle-ground of the show,” she said. “We laugh every rehearsal.” Another delightful feature of the show is some singing, it is a play about an opera after all. “Its about 10 percent singing,” said Durham. The show premiers on Oct. 14, with showings on Oct. 15, 21, 22, 28 and 29 with a matinee on Oct. 23. Durham encourages fans to get their tickets in advance as they may not be able to count on there being tickets at the door. “We’ve performed some of Ludwig’s plays in Cornwall before and we’ve had sold out performances,” she said. Tickets are available through the United Way of SD&G and at svtc.theticketwicket.ca.

ALL-NEW 2016 CRUZE LT

October is here, and with it comes Thanksgiving, Halloween and Ontario Public Library Week! Every October, a week is dedicated to celebrating all things libraries – this year, celebrations take place between October 16 to 22. And, what better time to show your support and visit your local library branch. All this month, there are open houses, local author visits, and innovative programs; all designed to showcase library services. Why not stop by and help us celebrate! October is a time to show how we feel about libraries; not only is it a good time to celebrate, but it is also an opportunity to remind those around us that we value our library services. It’s a time to remember what is available through the library, what new services are offered, and what those services mean to our communities. All across SDG this month, library staff are working hard to show all sides of public libraries – all that is missing is you! Come by for a visit, participate in our contests, or sign up for a library card. We’re looking forward to welcoming you. Programs and events around Ontario Public Library Week have been planned at all branches of the SD&G County Library throughout October. Contact your local branch for more information or visit us online at www.sdglibrary.ca. And don’t forget, our SDG Reads final event takes place during Ontario Public Library Week on October 19th. Join us at North Stormont Place as we welcome award-winning author, Frances Itani. For more information on SDG Reads, visit www.sdglibrary.ca/sdg-reads or speak to any library staff.

The women met years ago in a Winchester park. They discovered they had a lot in common. Messervey said, “We had similar dreams and she (Francis) too wanted to share the gift of God’s Word.” Francis explained how her parents had purchased The Village Green Flower Shop in Morrisburg. She worked there and developed a passion for working with flowers. Although the business was sold, she said “The name The Village Green Flower Shop was reclaimed.” Both Francis and Messervey wanted a store front. They knew having a dual business was a smart business move. Deputy Mayor, Tammy Hart and Councillor David Smith helped welcome the new business to the area by participated in the ribbon cutting ceremony. Friends and family gathered to celebrate and enjoy the refreshments and sweets, while The Gallagher Family (thegallaghers.ca) provided the entertainment.

Marlin Orchards holds festive pottery show Shannon Ferguson, Special to TC Media Cornwall, Ontario - Handcrafted creations were on display throughout Thanksgiving weekend at the Country Harvest Pottery & Art Show held at Marlin Orchards and Garden Centre. In its 30th year, the event showcased the work of 28 potters and artisans, as well as live demonstrations which allowed visitors to watch the throwing process in action. “It’s important to show people this so they can understand it better,” said potter Marko

Savard. “The live demonstrations show exactly what it takes to make just one bowl— there’s really a lot of stages.” The three day show was also a fundraiser, featuring a silent auction table made up entirely of art donated by each potter. The proceeds raised by the event will go to the MS Society of Canada Cornwall & District Chapter, this year’s chosen charity. “We are thrilled that [Marlin Orchards] thinks of us and lets us benefit from the results of the silent auction,” said Karine Torrie-Racine, who was attending the show on behalf of the MS Society. Despite a rainy Saturday, the show was a

great success and event organizer, Ann Marlin was impressed. “This year’s turnout was excellent, it was a bit noisy in [the greenhouse] when we had those heavy showers but it worked out very well and the weather for the rest of the weekend was just right,” she said. Local potters will be part of another fundraising initiative taking place next month. The Agapé Centre’s Empty Bowls campaign takes place Sunday, November 6 and will allow diners to enjoy gourmet soup out of one-of-a-kind bowls, which they get to take home afterwards.

Local potter Yoshiko Koya stands with event organizer, Ann Marlin, in front of a ceramics display at the Country Harvest Pottery & Art Show (Shannon Ferguson /Seaway News).

OPINION

Our own beer toss moment When it comes to fans throwing things at athletes, other than their mouths, as was the case at the Baltimore-Toronto wild card game at Rogers Centre, Cornwall has had more than its share of such incidents. The ugliest was during a 1966 Central Junior Hockey League game between Brockville Braves and the Royals at the old Water Street Arena. At the end of the game two Royals’ fans, who had spent much of the afternoon at a watering hole down the street, climbed over the boards and pounced on Brockville defenceman Remi Fleury, leaving him with two black eyes. And, just as happened in Toronto, it took city police a couple of days to track down the two goons despite the fact everybody in the arena knew who they were. Then there was the fan who threw a full can of beer at a visiting player - and missed - during a River Kings game at the Ed Lumley Arena. He was later ID’d as the son of the team owner. During a Quebec Junior Hockey League game at the LumDome, an agitated Royals fan who had been “communicating” with the Sherbrooke Castors players and coach, decided to leap over the railing and into the visitor’s bench. All 130 pounds of him. Instead, he hit the concrete floor behind the bench and broke his ankle .... all to the delight of the Castors players and coach. The fiery Red Lascelle, the Royals franchise owner in those early Central Junior days, got so worked up over a “bad” call that he picked up an ash tray in the Water Street Arena press box (where he had been assigned after coming out on the ice after a referee in an earlier game) and heaved it at the “offending” referee, just missing him. It’s not always fans who throw things. In an Ontario Hockey League game at the LumDome, John Anderson of the Oshawa Generals was so annoyed with a heckler behind their bench that he threw his stick at the mouthy fan. He was a better goal scorer than javelin thrower. The stick hit another fan not involved in the heckling,

breaking his jaw. Anderson claimed he didn’t intend to throw the stick, it just somehow got away from his grip. Hummm! As they say, “That’s my story and I’m sticking to it.” __________________________ A South Glengarry reader, who is “stuck” with Hydro One, says he recently received a number of tips on how to cut back on his power consumption and “save” money. The problem is, he says, over the years he has undertaken every one of the “money saving tips” but his monthly hydro bill continues to soar. The less he uses, the more it costs. He is on a fixed pension. “I don’t use the dishwasher. Gave that up a long time ago. I turn the heat down below 60F at night and try to keep it at 66F during the daytime. I stopped using hot water for washing 10 years ago. All my light fixtures are those new energy saving things. But my bill keeps climbing,” he noted. And, he said, the ‘fat cats’ at Hydro One aren’t much help. “Once when I called Hydro One to complain, I was told that I must be doing something wrong. I must be leaving a night light on, or something. Imagine that. A night light is the problem. Except I don’t have a night light. Can’t afford that luxury.” By his estimates, his monthly hydro bill has climbed about 125% over the last 10 years, far beyond inflation. “My Hydro One bill is higher than my property tax bill ... and a lot higher than my food bill.” What really riles him is reading the Sunshine list each year and seeing the kind of pay increases Hydro One is shelling out to management. Fear not, my friend. Preem Kathy says she is concerned. Unfortunately for the Liberals, the passage of time makes it harder to blame everything on Mike Harris. THIS AND THAT Included in the list of proposed reforms for the Canadian Senate is live television coverage of the proceedings. Pleeease! There is enough boring, useless stuff

OPINION

Canada seems serious to stop global warming Sultan Jessa Most scientists and environmental experts agree 2016 is already the hottest year on record. We have seen and experienced this where we live, whether in Ontario or Quebec. And in California there is no end to the longest drought on record in recent memory. And if nothing is done, we will continue to see global warming at an alarming rate. Climate change is proving even more disruptive than even scientists’ most pessimistic projections. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s Liberal government is showing positive signs of taking positive action to stop global warming.

Climate linked disasters are costing Canadians billions of dollars. Soon after the United States and China, two of the major polluters in the world, signed what many call the “giant leap for mankind” on global warming, many other countries are determined to follow their leads. Canada is among those countries. Scientific evidence is absolutely clear. Climate change is one of the greatest threats of our time. From droughts to coastal flooding to the expanding melt of sea ice on our Arctic, the widespread impacts of climate change is compelling Canada to take strong action now. Trudeau is providing national leadership and urging provinces and territories to take

action on climate change. Working together and in complete harmony, we, as a country, can fight global warming by putting a price on carbon and reduce carbon pollution. Governments of the world are going to meet in Paris in December to negotiate an unprecedented global climate agreement to come into effect in 2020. More than 150 world leaders attending this most important summit on climate change must commit urgent action to avert irreversible climate change and protect people from its impact. Canada will be going to Paris with a new federal government and new commitments by provinces and municipalities.

Some of the world’s best and most respected scientists say that if temperatures rise beyond 2C above pre-industrial levels, the effects of climate change will be far more dangerous. To keep warming below that level, the world will have to drastically reduce its emissions, scientists say. An increase in global average temperature greater than 2C above pre-industrial levels would result in accelerated melting of glaciers and Arctic ice, continued rising sea levels, more frequent and extreme weather events, difficulties for agriculture and changes in plant and animal life. The majority of Canadians want something done about global warming.

Community gathers at Char-Lan to save school Nick Seebruch

16 - Thursday, October 13, 2016 - Seaway News - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

WILLIAMSTOWN, Ontario - The community around Char-Lan District High School gathered in the school’s cafeteria Thursday night to discuss their options in light of the recent Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) staff report that calls for the school to close by July 2017. Leading the meeting was Sally Phypers, the Chair of the Williamstown Public School Parent’s Council. “We have to focus on how we can save the school,” she said at the opening of the meeting. “We need to think of dollars and students in seats.” MPP Jim McDonell addressed the assembly and gave his advice as the Provincial representative for the area. “The key is to not let them make the decision easy,” he said. “Come out in numbers. Inundate them to show you’re upset.” Mayor of South Glengarry Ian McLeod said that he felt the Province was dismantling rural communities and that the school board was forgetting the township’s financial contribution. “The modus operandi of our provincial government is to erode our rural communities until

they don’t exist and right now they are doing a good job of that,” McLeod said to a round of applause from the room. “In South Glengarry we collect $2 million for schools. We have to make the board understand how important our money is to them. I think they’ve forgotten that.” Stephanie Jaworski gave the assembled crowd a breakdown of the numbers before they broke off into smaller focus groups. She explained that across the Upper Canada Disctrict School Board that the board was below capacity by one-third. Char-Lan however, was 78 percent full and that Williamstown Public School was at 162 percent capacity. SJ McLeod however, sits at 10 percent capacity. What this means is that the Char-Lan Feeder Group is overall at roughly 80 percent capacity. She explained that according to the report, at least in the short term, that the closing of CharLan, as well as the closing of other schools across the board, would lead to a $2 million increase to the board’s budget. That number rises to $4 million when the cost of transporting students to their new schools is taken into account. The students going to Char-Lan would start

There was standing room only in the Char-Lan cafeteria as the community met to discuss plans to save the school on Thursday, October 6 (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News). going to St. Lawrence Secondary School in Septemer 2017 under this plan. That would require an additional 12 buses as well as vans for the more remote students. Ultimately, explained Jaworski, the UCDSB plan, while more expensive, would allow the board to build new schools. Under Ministry of Education rules right now, the UCDSB would be less likely to receive funding to build a new school while they still have these older schools with empty spaces in their system. After the presentations, the assembled crowd broke off into work groups. Each person

in each work group was given the chance to air their concerns and give their opinion on what should be done next. All of the conclusions from each work will be summarized at a follow-up meeting next week. This summarization will help form the group’s presentation to the Accommodation Review Committee in November. The school board is scheduled to make their final decision on the closure of schools on March 23.In all, the UCDSB plan calls for the closure of 12 schools by the end of June 2017 with more possibly closing based on Capital Funding.

The magic of this recipe is that it can be made a few days in advance, but most importantly the vegetable ingredients are flexible, put what you have on hand in there! Ingredients 1/2 cup of olive oil 1 Tbs of duck fat 1 medium chopped onion, roughly chopped 2 cloves garlic, thinly sliced 6-8 fresh tomatoes, skinned and chopped 4 carrots (peeled and chopped into 1/2” rings) 3 cups of peeled and cubed squash (buttercup, acorn, kobacha) 1/2 cabbage chopped thinly 1 1/2 teaspoons kosher salt 1/4 teaspoon black pepper 3-4 Italian sausages (smoked ones work also) 4 sprigs of thyme (dried: 1 tsp) 1 sprig of rosemary (dried 1 Tbs)

Directions Preheat oven to 425°F. In a large bowl combine all ingredients, toss together to cover evenly all the ingredients. Place mixture in 9 x 13 pan. Cover with foil. Bake at 425°F for 1 to 1.5 hours. When a fork can easily go through the vegetables the dish is ready. Serve with crusty bread.

“I paid for the right to play, I’m taking my time!” On golf courses, too often we hear someone say, “I paid for my green time and I’ll take as long as I want!” This is a true sign of egotism, and a lack of respect towards all the other players. If you see yourself in these lines, realize that no one wants you to play more quickly than the time normally required. But only as long as you play while respecting the time of others. To do this, here are a few basic tips: 1- Be ready to play: get moving as soon as it’s your turn. 2- While another player is swinging, choose your next golf club. 3- If you hit your ball into the woods, bring the right club to make the play if, by chance, you instead of leaving it behind, so you don’t have find your ball. to return for it and waste the time of players 4- Carry your bag to the side of the next hole behind you.

Pillows are such a pain to clean, the best thing to do is to keep them from getting dirty in the first place. So use a pillow cover. You dont want a plastic one though, because then the pillow can’t breathe and if it’s a feather pillow it will develop a slight odor. They should have labels idendifying the filling and care instructions. If not, a synthetic-filled pillow can be washed as follows: Dissolve a low-sudsing detergent in the water before adding pillows to the machine. Squeeze as much air as possible out of the pillow and be sure to submerge it when you put it in. Use a short, delicate cycle, warm and high water setting. Wash 2 pillows at a time to balance the machine. Don’t expect the pillow to have exactly the same shape it did before washing. Machine-dry one pillow at a time for sixtyto-ninety minutes on hot.(This restores the fluffiness.) Or drip-dry, but don’t expect quick drying. Feather or foam pillows should be dry-cleaned for best results.

A doctor and a lawyer are talking at a party. Their conversation is constantly interrupted by people describing their ailments and asking the doctor for free medical advice. After an hour of this, the exasperated doctor asks the lawyer, “What do you do to stop people from asking you for legal advice when you’re out of the office?” “I give it to them,” replies the lawyer, “and then I send them a bill.” The doctor is shocked, but agrees to give it a try. The next day, still feeling slightly guilty, the doctor prepares the bills. When he goes to place them in his mailbox, he finds a bill from the lawyer.

Ray Eady (centre), donated $1, 000 to the Big Brothers Big Sister’s Chapter in Cornwall. Stephanie Allen and Amanda Brisson received the donation. Eady was awarded the money through Allstate’s Community Hero program. This is the second year in a row that Eady has won the award. He said that he chose Big Brothers, Big Sisters, because of the support they give to the community and how they help to create the next generation of leaders. “Giving back the community is a leading part of Allstate’s mandate,” he said (Nick Seebruch/ Seaway News).
