Study Recommends Civic Complex for new Arts and Cultural Centre Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Sierra Planning and Management (SPM) and +VG Architects were commissioned by the City to study options for a new cultural centre. The need for a new cultural and arts centre emerged out of findings from a 2011 Culturescape study done by SPM. “One of the key themes that emerged from the study relating to the development of a vision for culture in Cornwall and the

United Counties was “the need for a publicly identifiable place which is recognized by the entire community and which can act as a Centre for training, production and experience of cultural activities and products,”” the report reads. The findings of the art centre was presented to the City at the July 11 council meeting and will be recommending the Civic Complex as the site for a new arts and cultural centre. According to the study, being by the

for the new arts centre. If council accepts Option A without amendment, 8000 square feet could be added to the Civic Complex for the use of the new Arts and Culture Centre. A new entrance would be added as well at the Northwest portion of the building. The +VG group said at Council that the total cost of the project could be $12 million. Despite this cost, the study predicts that a new arts and cultural centre would attract 28, 700 new tourists to Cornwall from the United Counties of SD&G and that they would bring with them over $4 million in revenue annually. “The new facility will add a range of new spaces and facilities to the existing complex to grow revenue generation opportunities,” the study says. “A number of assumptions have been made about how the spaces will be used and the revenues associated with these uses, as well as the key expenses for the building addition.” Other possible sites for the centre that were passed over included the Si Miller Arena site, the Cotton Mill area and the Aultsville theatre.

With the continued lack of rainfall across the South Nation Conservation (SNC) jurisdiction, the SNC Water Response Team has moved the drought conditions from minor to moderate levels, effective July 7. Since issuing a minor drought warning at the end of May, SNC has not seen conditions improve over the last month. Little rainfall received in June has been sporadic and not enough to improve soil moisture, creeks and groundwater. Environment Canada climate stations in Cornwall, Ottawa, and Brockville, indicated less than 60% of normal precipitation in the last 3 months.

South Lancaster Wharf gets a splash of colour Provided by the Township of South Glengarry

LANCASTER, Ontario - A splash of colour has been added to the South Lancaster Wharf thanks to a generous donation from Dulux Paints in Cornwall and the hard work of The Friends of the South Lancaster Wharf. The boathouses along the wharf were recently painted and a ribbon cutting was held on Friday, July 8th to unveil a fresh new look along the waterfront. The Friends of the South Lancaster Wharf recently applied to Dulux Paints’ Colourful Communities Canada program, which is committed to beautifying neighbourhoods by providing an infusion of colour that makes a positive impact on the people who charities and non-profit organizations support. Glenn Bethune, a member of the Friends of the South Lancaster Wharf Executive Committee, recently retired as Manager of Dulux Paints in Cornwall. Volunteers participated in a “Paint Day” at the end of June in order to complete the project. Prior to painting, permission was obtained from all boathouse owners to repaint the structures. The Grind provides valuable stage time Roxanne Delage CORNWALL, Ontario - A local musician, who found inspiration at open mic events out of town, has been facilitating the same, for those of us in town, who want to be heard. Although he started playing music at the tender age of five, Chuck Leclair, in terms of performing for an audience, said that he was a late bloomer. Still dealing with stage jitters, he would go up to Ottawa, for open mic events there. “It was a better venue, there, because it’s easier to get up in front of people that you don’t know,” said Leclair, a lefty, who learned to play guitar, upside down on his mother’s right handed guitar. Realizing that there were really no opportunities for open mic in Cornwall, he approached The Grind Café, and began organizing monthly events at the popular spot. Five years later, approximately 1000 performances have taken to the stage thanks to his initiative. “The open mics are great because of the benefits, in terms of public speaking, in terms of reading the audience. It allows people to test new songs out, whether they’re covers or original songs. It allows for people to collaborate and jam; there’s a lot of great experiences.” The family-friendly venue has provided a

stage for young and not so young performers, amateurs and pros alike, the place and audience to try out new songs, or to get valuable stage time under their belt. “It’s open to any level of experience, beginner or pro, and it’s a good time. Everyone is supportive and there is always applause for courage.” “It’s a café-type setting, like back in the 60s, great for people who want to perform and mingle with other performers and music lovers.” Generally, the last Thursday of each month, the next two events are booked for July 28 and August 25. To participate, just show up on the night, with your instrument, at 6:30, and sign up. If there are any other establishments, in Cornwall, interested in hosting an open mic night, please contact Chuck at Chuckleclair@ hotmail.com, or 613-363-8489. Rain did not dampen the spirits at Cornwall’s Summer Beer Fest Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Heavy rain and thunderstorms did not deter Cornwall’s beer connoisseurs from enjoying the second annual Summer Beer Fest at NAV Can on Saturday, July 9. This year, the Seaway Food Festival, which organizes the event, sold 1, 600 tickets in advance and more people arrived despite the rain to buy tickets at the door. Eight restaurants were on site to keep people fed including Love Love Food Cafe, Bistro & Bakery. A selection of over 60 different brews were on-hand for sampling including Cornwall’s local brewery Rurban. “Right now things are great because the weather has cleared up,” said Rurban Brewing founder and owner AJ Rorabeck when asked

how the day was going. “People are enjoying themselves and that’s what matters,” he continued. Rurban had brought four special casks of beer for the occasion including a special Pale Ale and a special double IPA that contained fruit juices and rinds and was delicious. Also keeping dry under a tent at the event was a table for Crafting a Cure, Cornwall’s annual beer tasting fundraiser in support of the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation. Held on the first Friday of every November, Crafting a Cure has raised $45, 000 in three years so far. This year, the event will be held at the Agora Catholic Centre in Cornwall. The event was started by Jeff and Cherie Lalonde who were at Beer Fest on Saturday, slinging suds and raising awareness for a cure for juvenile diabetes.

Enjoy a free outdoor movie in Lamoureux Park on July 16th Todd Lihou CORNWALL, Ontario - Residents are invited to enjoy a free movie under the stars on Saturday, July 16th at the Lions Club Bandshell in Lamoureux Park as part of the City of Cornwall’s Arts in the Park series. This free event – proudly sponsored by Rachel’s Kids – will feature the presentation of the movie ‘Alvin and The Chipmunks: The Road Chip’ on a 25-foot inflatable screen.

The show will start as soon as it is dark enough (approximately 8:45 pm to 9:15 pm, weather permitting) and seating is on a firstcome, first-serve basis, so an early arrival is recommended. “The outdoor movie night has become a popular part of our Arts in the Park series,” said Lorne Taillon, Leisure Arts Coordinator. “It’s a great way for families to enjoy our waterfront park and spend some quality time together during the summer holidays.”

Food vendors will be on site selling food and drinks, and the Civic Co mplex washrooms will remain open for the duration of the movie. Organizers are reminding movie-goers to dress for the weather and come prepared with a lawn chair or blanket, a flashlight and bug spray.

About Arts in the Park: Arts in the Park is a series of free, family-friendly concerts and events held outdoors at the Lion’s Club Bandshell during the summer months.

The series is now in its 31st season. This year’s program features 24 performance nights featuring over 27 musical acts, one musical matinee and a free outdoor movie in the park. All evening performances begin at 7 pm and are weather permitting. Free parking is available behind the Bandshell and at the Cornwall Civic Complex. Newsy Lalonde day to be proclaimed by city hall Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

ORNWALL, Ontario - City council proclaimed July 21 as “Newsy Lalonde Day” in Cornwall. The Montreal Canadiens star of the early part of the 20th Century who hailed from the Seaway City will be further immortalized for his contributions to hockey with a new Ontario Heritage plaque honouring ‘The Flying Frenchmen’ on that day at the Cornwall Civic Complex. Similar plaques are going up in Belleville and Sault Ste. Marie - the homes of Jack Laviolette and Didier “Cannonball” Pitre, the other men who comprised the Frenchmen. “Better late than never - he’s starting to get some recognition for his accomplishments,” said Richard Quintal, a grandson of Lalonde who lives in Montreal. “It would have been nice in his lifetime, but at least there’s still some family that remember him. “It’s nice that the original Flying Frenchmen are getting some sort of recognition.” The commemoration, part of the Ontario Heritage Trust program, will include a large blue and gold plaque - one of more than 1,250 across the province that have been erected over the years. Hockey related activities will also be taking place that day at the complex. Former MPP Jim Brownell, who sits as a member of the heritage trust, was pleased to see a local hero honoured. “For such a long time nothing was done for

Newsy Lalonde in Cornwall,” said Brownell. “It was quite exciting when I read in the package that Newsy Lalonde would be receiving plaque.” Lalonde was arguably the first Montreal NHL superstar, along with the likes of Georges Vezina. Lalonde scored 124 NHL goals for the Canadiens, beginning in the 1917-1918 season, including a remarkable 37 in 1919-1920 in just 23 games. It is said that he even scored the first goal in Canadiens’ history in 1910. In the 1919 playoffs he scored 17 goals in just 10 games. He was also a lacrosse star. The driveway leading from Water Street to the civic complex entrance was christened Newsy Lalonde Way in 2010.

Cornwall Police make arrest in vandalism case Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The War Memorial on Second and Bedford Streets was defaced Sunday evening. A large green “CY” was spray painted across the front of the memorial. Outrage soon emerged on social media as people began to share photos of the vandalism on Facebook. “This is as disrespectful as it gets,” wrote Cornwall City Councillor David Murphy on Facebook. “Vandalizing the Cornwall

Cenotaph is unacceptable. If you have any information about potential suspects please contact Cornwall Police.” “This is so disrespectful, whoever is responsible for this should have to do many many community hours of hard labor, and pay to have it restored back to how it should be,” Marian Breton commented. The Cornwall Community Police Service announced on Tuesday morning that they have arrested one Dustin O’Byrne, 21, of Cornwall on charges of mischief to a war memorial, four counts of mischief and breach of probation.

Cornwall Police did not expand on how they came to identify O’Byrne with the vandalism at the Cenotaph, but did say that they located and arrested him on July 11. O’Byrne is being held until his bail hearing. Murphy shared the news on Monday that the cenotaph had been cleaned up early Monday morning. “Thank you to Scott Porter and his staff from the City of Cornwall for restoring the Cornwall Cenotaph to it’s proper state,” wrote Murphy, again on Facebook. “It was cleaned of the graffity by 9am Monday morning.”

Constable Dan Cloutier with the Cornwall Community Police said their criminal investigation division was handling the case and that the investigation was ongoing. Linda Fisher, President of the Legions Cornwall Branch, Branch 297 said of the vandalism “I find it very disrespectful, I hope they catch them.” Fisher said she could not believe that someone would deface something like a cenotaph to fallen soldiers. “The people who did this should be made to sit with a veteran,” she said. CORNWALL, Ontario - Pommier Jewellers celebrated the achievements of local high school graduates on Friday, July 8 with ceremonies for the 2016 Pommier Award and the 2016 Team Cornwall Bursary. Recipients and their families gathered in Pommier Square to receive their bursaries and acknowledgement for their efforts. The Pommier Award is given to students who have demonstrated pride in their school and themselves and owner of Pommier Jewellers, Andre Pommier said “It’s for someone who has really amped it up a notch at the end of their school career and students who really envelope together school, sports, teachers, and peers and are just proud”. Each student received a custom-made, handengraved pendant with their school’s logo on it. Char-Lan District High School recipient Emma Riddell said “It’s a cool award to win because it’s not strictly focused on grades or sports and is more about everything together and I’m happy I got it”. Following the Pommier Award ceremony, bursaries for Team Cornwall were handed out by

members of Team Cornwall, including Pommier and Chair, Peter Gault. The $500 bursary is awarded to graduating students who demonstrate leadership and a sense of community and encourages them to become ambassadors for the city of Cornwall as they continue their education. Gault said “This bursary is growing our ambassadors for tomorrow and it’s rewarding kids for doing great in school, but not just academically. There’s more emphasis on participation in the school, being leaders and making it a better place”. The bursary is in its sixth year and continues to grow, not only increasing in value but also expanding to more schools with the addition of St. Matthew’s last year and T.R. Leger this year. Recipient Taylor Beitz from Holy Trinity Catholic Secondary School will be attending the University of Minnesota in the fall on a soccer scholarship and said “This bursary is allowing me to pursue my future aspirations and will add a little bit more comfort to my everyday living”. She added “I’ll be moving really far away from Cornwall but I’m looking forward to coming back and visiting in the summers and regardless of where I end up, Cornwall will always be home to me”.

Who I am and how I see the news Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

Community newspapers like “Seaway News” are so important in the lives of their readers, which is why I feel that it is important for me, as the new custodian of content for this paper, to introduce myself. My name is Nick Seebruch and I am the new Editor of TC Media Cornwall, whose products include “Seaway News”, “Cornwall Express” and www.cornwallseawaynews.com. Before I get into my whole life story, I want to explain the importance of local newspapers as I understand it, so that you the reader can better know the kind of journalist that I am. Community newspapers are the home of stories about ourselves and our neighbours, which is why they have stayed so relevant in the rapidly changing world of journalism. Yes, stories do still break on social media, but where else can someone from Cornwall go to find the full story about that fire down the street that took their neighbours home? Where else can someone from Cornwall go to find out about a local charity that’s raising money for a good cause? Where else can local businesses advertise? Where else, but their local paper? I have been a journalist my whole adult life and for most of that time I have worked for small, community newspapers both here in Ontario and in Quebec. I have lived in the area for most of my life and I remember all of the major changes that this community has gone through. One of my first memories was going to the old Brookdale 3

Cinemas, next to what was the A&P Grocers and what is now a Food Basics. Growing up here I had friends whose fathers worked at the Domtar plant. I will never forget the smell of that plant and I will also never forget what it meant to the town when it closed. Fortunately, the people of Cornwall persevered past that time. As someone who spent years away at university, I saw how different Cornwall looked when I came back, but still felt very much like home. One of my favourite parts about summer and the reason why I look forward to this season all year is the annual fair in Williamstown. The Williamstown Fair is said by some to be “bigger around here than Christmas,” and it arguably deserves that moniker. I look forward to this year’s celebrations with a lot of excitement, because for me, it is the best opportunity to enjoy the company of almost everyone in the community, in one place. I attended Bishop’s University for my B.A. and graduated from Concordia University’s competitive Graduate Journalism Diploma Program. My work in community newspapers has seen me cover everything from goose droppings in the park to important decisions of the Supreme Court of Canada. Everything across that entire spectrum from the lowest and most obscure to the most prestigious is important to local readers. It is my job to make sure that these stories, your stories, get told. Ultimately, with the advice and experience of my colleagues, I am responsible for making sure these stories make it to

Nick Seebruch

print and get the coverage that they deserve. The stories about our community are not always in our community however. Stories from across the province, country and globe can all be related back to home. More often than not, someone we know, a family member, a neighbour, a friend, that is affected by news happening beyond the seaway. I expect and am prepared for my friends, neighbours and fellow members of the community to keep me accountable. If I miss some-

thing, I know that I will hear about it. I know that I face a steep learning curve and have big shoes to fill here, but I am committed to delivering the high standard and quality journalism that you have come to expect from Seaway News. This is what you, the readers can expect from me as Editor at TC Media. I look forward to getting the task ahead of me underway. I can’t wait to get out into our community and start telling the stories of the people who live here.

LETTERS

Editor: An open letter to Premier Wynne: Now is the time to clean up the mercury poisoning in Grassy Narrows. Your government cannot continue to drag its feet on this issue. People’s lives are at stake. Sending Ministers Zimmer and Murray to Grassy Narrows today is a good step. But this cannot be a public relations exercise - real, concrete steps must be taken. Scientists have concluded that it is possible to clean up the mercury contamination in the English-Wabigoon River system. There are also reports indicating there may be a source of ongoing contamination.

Over 500 citizens in the past week have taken the time to write your government a letter demanding action to clean up the mercury poisoning in Grassy Narrows. Thousands attended a rally and march at Queen’s Park. I ask you to listen to these concerns. We do not want to live in a province that allows its people to be poisoned. It’s clear a strategy of natural remediation is not working, and it’s been way too long without additional action. Your government has pledged action on the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation report. Specifically, Minister

Premier, it’s time for action in Grassy Narrows Zimmer promised “Ontario is working to provide the resources and space for Indigenous languages, traditions, teachings and governance to thrive.” Premier, how can the Grassy Narrows First Nation thrive when the river they rely on for water, food and economy continues to be poisoned by mercury? I urge your government to take

immediate action to clean up the mercury problems in Grassy Narrows. This includes physically removing mercury from polluted silt in the river system and limiting clear cut foresting in the area. I appreciate your attention to this important issue. Mike Schreiner Leader, Green Party of Ontario

concerned after losing sight of the suspect in the dark alley near the hotel. He denied pointing the revolver at the victim. The jury found him not guilty. But the justice system was not finished with the officer. He faced another trial on charges of public mischief and assault involving a bizarre incident related to the fatal shooting. The night after the tragic parking lot shooting two brothers of the victim allegedly broke a window in the officer’s house. They were charged. But the charges were quickly dropped when there was some doubt about who broke the window. There also was evidence that the brothers were chased and assaulted by the three off-duty officers after the brothers drove past his house. The suspended Forget was charged with assault of the brothers and public mischief. Two young police colleagues who were visiting with Forget on the night of the incident were charged with public mischief. Forget, guilty of assault and public mischief, was given a six-month jail sentence. The other two officers were given 60-day sentences for public mischief. All three lost their jobs. TRIVIA ANSWER: Rev. Hector MacMillan of Avonmore was killed by Congolese rebels on Nov. 24, 1964. The MacMillan family was taken hostage by the rebels in September. Two of his six sons were wounded in the hostage taking but survived. MacMillan had been serving as a missionary in the African country. building was a former church hall. Where was the hall? Hint - An apartment building now sits on the site. SPORTS STUFF: Belleville’s search for a hockey team to fill the entertainment void created by the departure of the Ontario Hockey League Bulls two seasons ago is reported to be a done deal. The Belleville Intelligencer has reported that the Ottawa Senators are moving their American Hockey League team to Belleville from Binghampton, N.Y. for the 2017-18 season. The agreement is said to call for the city (aka taxpayers) to fork out $20 million in upgrades at the Yardmen Arena. This includes expanding the 3,200-seat arena. The city wants a commitment from the Senators of no less than five years. ... City lawyer Sean Adams spotted Friday playing a round at Upper Canada Golf Course with NHL Hall of Famer Dale Hawerchuk who was in the city to attend a wedding. HERE AND THERE: The ‘Old Saddle Tramp’ (aka Bill LaSalle) checks in re: last week’s column on radio/TV days. LaSalle figures that he might be the last of the early 1950s CKSF radio on-air personalities. LaSalle, who is turning 80, started at the station at 38 Pitt St. when he was 16 years old, about eight years after the station went on the air. ... Ed Lefebvre (Summerheights) sends along a image edited photo of what a water fountain in the centre of the canal near the new low-level bridge would look like. Great idea. ... If we are going to have cyclists, skateboarders, e-bikes, motorized wheelchairs and vehicles sharing the roads, let’s have everybody playing by the same rules. Things like stopping at red lights and signaling turns.

High profile police shootings in the U.S. have pulled back the curtain of time on a tragic fatal police shooting in Cornwall some 35 years ago. In the early hours of July 18, 1981 the staff of the Royal Hotel at Montreal Road and McConnell Avenue ejected a young man who had become a beverage room problem. Two city police officers in separate cruisers responded to the call. With the suspect gone, they cleared the scene to deal with more pressing police matters. It was a warm, busy Friday night that strained police resources. A short time later the ejected man was back at the hotel causing more problems. Police were called, again. One of the officers from the initial complaint pulled up to the front door of the hotel. Seeing the police, the suspect fled down a dark alley next to the hotel with the officer, on foot, in hot pursuit. Seconds later a single gun shot was heard. Not long after the shot, the officer placed a frantic call to the station dispatcher for an ambulance, saying a man was bleeding to death. The 23-year-old suspect, Jay Caron, described as a happy-go lucky guy who worked as a carpenter, was sprawled on the pavement of a parking lot with blood gushing from a gunshot wound to the neck. He died two hours later in a Hotel Dieu Hospital operating room. He had lost six pints of blood. The next day Crown Attorney Donald Johnson asked the Ontario Provincial Police and an outside Crown attorney to take over the

investigation “to avoid an appearance or suspicion of partiality.” The officer, Acting Sergeant Bernard Forget, a 12-year veteran, was charged with second degree murder. Seven months later, the suspended officer was found not guilty by a jury of seven men and five women of the reduced charge of criminal negligence causing death. During the trial that attracted national attention, the prosecution produced evidence that the officer chased Caron down the alley with his Smith and Wesson revolver in his right hand and pointed in the air, which was not disputed by the defence. A witness said that when the officer got out of his cruiser and spotted the suspect he called out, in a calm manner, “I want to speak to you” but that Caron bolted down the alley. Forget was described by his superiors as an excellent officer who was cool under pressure. The jurors heard that when Caron tripped and fell in the parking lot, the officer grabbed him by the collar of his t-shirt while still holding his sidearm. The defence claimed the weapon was fired accidentally during the struggle and that the officer, who had lost his radio during the chase and didn’t have backup, was attempting to hold Caron while putting the firearm back in the holster when it somehow misfired. The prosecution claimed that the revolver had been “pressed tightly” against the victim’s neck when it was fired. Taking the witness stand, the officer testified that he unholstered his weapon because he was

Boys and Girls Club Executive Director Jaquie Richards said that 152 golfers played at the event and over 100 local businesses gave their support. “Our community is special in that it embraces our young people,” Richards said. “They look

The average golfer could easily make up 10 strokes a ROUND by putting properly. This one point makes proper putting perhaps the most important part of any player’s game. And since most of us are not able to get onto the links anyway because of the winter weather, putting is something you can practice at home. There’s an old adage that the game of golf should be learned from the green back to the tee. That means putting, chipping, fairway shots, and THEN drives. Remember, most shots in a round are from around the green or on the green itself. It’s not uncommon for some players to take as many (and often more) shots while on the green as they did to get to the green. Putting is paramount to a solid game. The average golfer’s tendency, when putting, is to use too much of their wrists and arms, thus breaking down their wrists through the putt. This is wrong and is the main culprit for poor putting. Do not break your wrists when putting! Why? Because as soon as you do, you lose control. That wobbly wrist action is transmitted down to the putter face and the ball will go just about anywhere when contact is made. Anywhere except where you want to go, that is. To become a great putter, the perfect combination of shoulders and arms should be used throughout the entire putt. Any wrist action involved is through the motion of the weight of the putter. In other words, it’s a natural motion, not a break. During your putt, concentrate on your shoulders. On the backswing, your left shoulder naturally

How to shoot a dragon About a decade ago I attended an address by the celebrated photographer, Freeman Patterson. He commented that success in getting the picture can be summed up as “f.8 – and be there!” Photography is like fishing. I’m more interested in fishing than landing fish; I’m just as consumed in the process of searching for the picture as in getting the picture. Here’s a recent example. An early morning E-mail from a friend, Ed Hannaford of the Bainsville area, gave me a heads-up of the imminent arrival in The Seaway of the world’s largest Viking Ship, Draken Harald Hårfagre. We know the Vikings arrived in Newfoundland about one thousand years ago; how did they

pull this off, in a wooden open boat propelled only by oars and sail, without benefit of compass or sextant? The ‘Dragon’, my working name for her, is only 35 meters (114 ft.) long, but she sailed across the Atlantic from Norway, and her tour is scheduled to take her as far as the head of the Great Lakes. To capture my photos I sometimes fly in light aircraft; at other times my canoe becomes my shooting platform. I’ve climbed trees, scrambled up water towers, communication antennae and ship masts, or weasled my way into airport control towers to get an elevated vantage point of my quarry. To start my hunt, I used the web-based AIS to find out where the Dragon was. (Automatic Identification System is an automatic tracking

system of ships for locating their position electronically). For the next step in capturing the Dragon, I took to my bicycle, pedalling to the highest point of the suspension bridge between Cornwall Island and the New York State side of the river. I arrived at my shooting position about 45 minutes early, then waited. My lingering presence on the bridge attracted the attention of its surveillance cameras; an official was sent out to check: “Would you be out here to commit suicide?” After I explained why I was there, we had a very pleasant and enlightening discussion THINKING OF SELLING YOUR HOME?

about security, ships and photography. After the Dragon passed under the towering bridge and proceeded to the Snell Lock, I biked back to Cornwall and my pickup truck, then drove on to Morrisburg to photograph the vessel as it passed by. Next: the Iroquois Lock became an excellent viewing position near where even better shots were obtained. So far, so good. I now had enough material for a first person story proposal for the Seaway News. The publisher gave it a go ahead. My next photo vantage point was to occur in Brockville, where the Dragon was to spend the weekend in the company of some tall ships. Plan A was to launch my canoe to photograph it from the river, with the city’s distinctive skyline in the background. An alternative was to use a local Cessna 172 to get an even more impressive overview. However, to quote Rabbie Burns, “The best laid schemes o’ Mice an’ Men, Gang aft agley…”: heavy overcast, rain and wind gusts up to 40 kph determined that my canoe would stay atop my truck and the light aircraft at Brockville’s Tincap Airport would remain hangared. However, all was not lost. To get the elevated overview of Draken moored in the harbour, the management of Tall Ships Landing gave me access to the balcony of a twentieth floor penthouse. Finally, I was able to present Captain Ahlander with a gift of my photos of their vessel, in an attempt to barter for…. Barter for what? I hope to share the rest of the story with you some time later.

Run” booth at the main gate. To date more than 50 people have already registered with runners from Missouri, Ontario, Quebec and New Brunswick. Due to the schedule of the closing events of the Glengarry Highland Games, runners will have one hour to complete the official course. Participants who require longer will be detoured to an alternate finish but will not register an official time. For those who want to be involved without running, there are numerous positions available both on and off the course. Register at the Running Room site to become a volunteer. To get ongoing information on the Kilt Run, check out the Games Facebook page at https:// www.facebook.com/GlengarryHighlandGames or http://uptheglens.squarespace.com/

CRA Tips From The Cornwall Chamber CORNWALL, Ontario - The OPP recently issued a bulletin about a Canada Revenue Service scam and advised the public to contact CRA should they get such a call. The Chamber would like to add to the OPP’s warning by offering these tips. The public should be aware that the CRA does, in fact, contact people by telephone but has established procedures in place to protect your privacy. First, the public can verify CRA authenticity by calling 1-800-959-8281. For businesses, the number is 1-800-959-5525. Here are some additional tips for people

should they get a call from someone posing as a CRA agent. The CRA never: • Asks for prepaid credit cards • Asks for Information about your passport, health card, or driver’s license • Shares your taxpayer information unless you have provided the appropriate authorization • Leaves personal information on your answering machine or asks you to leave a message containing your personal information on an answering machine. When in doubt, ask yourself the following:

• Is there a reason CRA may be calling? Do I have a tax balance outstanding? • Is the requester asking for information I would not include with my tax return? • Is the requester asking for information I know the CRA already has on file? • How did the requester get my email address or telephone number? • Am I confident I know who is asking for the information? The CRA has strong procedures in place to protect the confidentiality of taxpayer information. The Chamber says, when in doubt, call the toll free number and check up.

Two little old ladies, Connie & Evelyn, were sitting on a park bench outside the local town hall where a flower show was in progress. The short one, Connie, leaned over and said, ‘Life is so boring. We never have any fun anymore. For$10.00 I’d take my clothes off and streak through that stupid, boring flower show!’ ‘You’re on!’ said Evelyn, holding up a $10.00 note. So Connie slowly fumbled her way out of her clothes. She grabbed a dried flower from a nearby display and held it between her teeth. Then, completely naked, streaked (as fast as an old lady can) through the front door of the flower show. Waiting outside, her friend soon heard a huge commotion inside the hall, followed by loud applause and shrill whistling. Finally, the smiling Connie came through the exit door surrounded by a cheering, clapping crowd. ‘What happened?’ asked Evelyn. ‘I won $1,000 as 1st prize for ‘Best Dried Arrangement!’

Handy Tips of the Week: Summer Barbecuing Tips: - Biggest tip: never leave your grill! - Patience is very important - When using high heat, the lid is open - When using low heat, the lid is closed - Never entertain with a recipe you’ve never made before - Don’t use your friends as guinea pigs For Energy-saving Tips: - You don’t have to preheat your grill for as long as you think - Keep it clean. A clean barbecue is more efficient and uses less fuel - Get organized. Bring everything together and cook in an orderly fashion - Stop using the highest heat. Cook at a lower heat and you’ll use less fuel Secrets of gardening: - When weeding, the best way to make sure you are removing a weed and not a valuable plant is to pull on it. If it comes out of the ground easily, it is a valuable plant. - A weed is a plant that has mastered every survival skill except for learning how to grow in rows. - Any self-respecting rock will break at least one shovel before accepting its new home. - Gardening requires a lot of water, most of it in the form of perspiration.
