Drivers move barricades and enter dangerous construction zone Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Some maverick drivers have moved construction zone barricades on Saunders Drive, prompting a warning from the city about the potential collapse of the road. Tommy Sauve, the city’s safety, training and operations supervisor, said earlier this month it was discovered that motorists were moving the barricades in order to gain access to Saunders Drive and avoid taking a nearby detour. Crews are working to replace an aged culvert that has deteriorated thanks to corrosion. The problem is that much of the fill separating the culvert from the asphalt road has been washed away. As a consequence there is nothing supporting the road above the culvert - and Sauve said the weight of a vehicle could be

enough to collapse Saunders Drive. There are already massive cracks forming in the asphalt road adjacent to where the culvert has failed. “There could be serious injuries and vehicle damages caused,” Sauve said. “Replacement is still in the works and council has approved emergency funding and we are waiting for Malyon’s Construction to proceed.” Insurance claims could be voided if damage is caused by the owners neglect for disobeying the road closure signs. Also, police could lay charges under the Highway Traffic Act for disobeying a road closure notice. Vehicles heading on to Saunders Drive from Second Street West only travel as far as Blackadder Drive before turning around. Work on the culvert is expected to be completed this summer.

From left Isaac Lavallee (survey student), Steve McNally (city curveryor) and Tommy Sauve (city safety officer) show off some of the cracks in the road at Saunders Drive.

CORNWALL, Ontario – City hall has parted ways with its clerk, Helen Finn, and an interim plan has been been put in place. CAO Maureen Adams confirmed Finn’s departure in an interview with this newspaper June 15. Adams did not give a reason for the departure. Seaway News has been told the decision to part ways with Finn was made solely by the

corporation. “As of the end of the day yesterday (June 14) she’s no longer an employee of the City of Cornwall,” said Adams. Finn was hired by the city in December 2012. The city has appointed human resources manager Geoff Clarke as acting clerk to oversee the department on an interim basis. Clarke will also continue with his regular duties. During this transition, Deputy Clerk Manon Levesque will assume the daily procedural responsibilities for the clerk’s office with city council. This will include handling the clerk responsibilities during regular council meetings, among other things. “As part of this transition period, we will be reviewing and exploring possible alternatives to the current structure of the clerk’s department within city hall,” said Adams. “This review will begin in the very near future.”

Council priorities

Steve Coderre

Former addict makes pitch to help

City councillors want to see a priority placed on further developments on the waterfront and in arts and culture in the coming months as administrators prepare the 2017 budget. At a planning session June 8 to lay the groundwork for next year’s budget document councillors agreed waterfront development, including enabling recreational usage, needs to be a focus. “That’s some of our top priorities,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy at the meeting that mostly included councillors brainstorming about the future needs of the city. Councillors are expected to meet again later this year to further focus their thoughts on the municipal budget. Council wants to complete the budget by the end of the year – for the first time ever. Typically council approves a budget document two or three months into the year.

Eight months ago Steve Coderre was wallowing in a labyrinth of drug and alcohol addiction, wondering if he would ever see the light of sobriety. Even he will tell you that the thought of living a sober life, in Cornwall, and organizing a fundraiser to help give back to agencies that have provided him with the tools necessary to turn his life around was “crazy” at the time. But sober for eight months, Coderre is doing just that, planning a three-pitch tournament to take place Aug. 13 and 14 at Legion Park to benefit the Addictions and Mental Health Centre being built by the Cornwall Community Glengarry wide open Hospital. United Way/Centraide of Stormont, Dundas & Glengarry made the announcement at its annual general meeting Tuesday. Eras come to an end Two Cornwall elementary schools celebrated the end of an era on Thursday afternoon as Gladstone Public School and East Front Public School prepare to say farewell and close their doors for good. The separate festivities were held at each respective school and both included bouncy castles, a BBQ, great music, and plenty of memorabilia looking back on years gone by. Gladstone principal Chad Brownlee was very involved throughout the day and said “We wanted to celebrate the 62 years that Gladstone has been around rather than have a memorial service for it”. People and families of all ages were on hand to enjoy the excitement and remember Gladstone. Kimberly Cameron was in

attendance, as all four of her children have been students there. She said “I’m seeing a lot of people that used to come here and some of my oldest kids’ friends who I haven’t had a chance to see in years”.

Hub’ concept planned Bourgon Construction is conducting a feasibility study to explore whether a business and community hub on the corner of Pitt and Second Streets can meet the needs of select businesses and organizations in the area. Community hubs play a critical role in building economic and social cohesion in communities, as highlighted in the “Community Hubs in Ontario: A Strategic Framework & Action Plan” report recently released by the Ontario government. A hub can anchor organizations together and its model is most attractive for small startups, professionals, charities, not-for-profit organizations and other community and service groups who have specific space needs but need to carefully manage costs. The First On Second model would feature a fully-accessible building with shared facilities and services, allowing users to lease only the space they need and provide an efficient way to share amenities and equipment used less than full-time.

Heading south to help his friends A local man hailing from West Virginia is set to drive donated relief supplies back to his home state, after recent flooding has claimed the lives of 23 people and damaged hundreds of homes. This Saturday and Sunday, July 2 and 3, at the Bob Turner parking lot next to Joe St. Denis Field, Derek Thomas is asking for the community to come together and donate any items that can help; from diapers, to clothes and bedding, to non-perishable food, to trash bags and cleaning supplies which will all help those affected in West Virginia. Thomas has been a an active part of the Wildcats Football program for six years and he is the Defensive Coordinator for the OVFL team of 16-19 year olds. Thomas moved to the city in 2010 when he married Cornwall’s Vanessa Thomas (Mosher-Nicholls) and truly integrated into town once he became part of the program. “I didn’t have any family or friends when I moved here and then I got invited to coach football and was able to blossom and now I consider the people in this [Wildcats] organization my second family and it will be that way for the rest of my life” Thomas said. He’s thankful that almost all everyone he has talked to has gotten on board with the donation

drive he is planning to help his community back home. Thomas, from Summersville, West Virginia says that areas in that region have been hard hit by the floods and he wants to do anything he can to help those in need. Instead of simply accepting monetary donation, which are still welcomed, Thomas will be filling a donated 43-foot truck with the supplies he receives this weekend and personally driving it 14 hours back to West Virginia. “It’s about coming together and helping each other out when we need it, there’s a sense of giving back and not just giving a cheque to somebody and saying ‘You go do all the work’” Thomas said. The town of Summersville and Cornwall are similar, according to Thomas, and he recognizes that people from both cities are all about helping others and that everyone is eager to lend a hand which he knows can help on a larger scale. “There’s so much adversity and people pushing away from each other these days but this is a way for two countries to come together”. Wife Vanessa adds “The people down there are very hospitable and would give you the shirt Vanessa and Derek Thomas. off their back and I truly believe that if this were to happen in Cornwall, they would rally togethattend for $5.00. On Sunday, donations will be er and do the same thing for us”. The donation drive kicks off at noon on accepted at the same spot from noon until 3pm. Those who cannot make it to the drive are Saturday running until 5pm, with a Wildcats game taking place at 4pm that people can encouraged to drop off any supplies at Lafarge

Canada Inc. located at 255 Tenth St. East (behind Canadian Tire). Interac or PayPal donations are also being accepted by email to derek.thomas659@gmail.com.

New fire hall opens in Glen Walter Nick Seebruch Special to TC Media

GLEN WALTER, Ontario - The Glen Walter branch of the South Glengarry Fire Service celebrated the opening of their new fire hall on Saturday, June 25. After ten years of effort, the community of Glen Walter now has a fire station to better meet their needs. “We outgrew the old station,” said Assistant Deputy Chief Brian Poirier.” The old building was tight and congested and this new station has bigger doors and is right in the village. This new station is really going to improve our ability to respond to calls out here.” This station is about more than just new digs for the firefighters. The new fire hall is an

important part of providing better fire service to the whole area. “There are a lot of new homes being built in this part of Glen Walter and this station puts us closer to the 401 as well so we can better respond to emergencies on the highway,” Poirier said. Located at 6650 Bray Street in Glen Walter, the new fire hall is two kilometers from the old site. The new building currently has three fire trucks attached to it, but can accommodate up to five. The 25 firefighters who will be stationed at the hall will also have more room for indoor training both downstairs and in the open and spacious upstairs room. A new feature of this hall is an emergency

button which activates warning lights at the intersection of Bray Street and Old Highway 2 to warn traffic when the trucks are leaving the station in a hurry. Construction on the new fire station started last summer and cost $1.1 million to complete. The Department is now looking towards Williamstown as the next community to receive a new fire hall. Township council and members of the fire services were on hand to celebrate the opening of the new station. “I want to congratulate council on the opening of this fire station,” said Scott Hayes, the Fire Prevention Officer for South Glengarry. “This is something the community can use for years and years to come.”

The importance of the mind Golf is a complex game. As well as having to master techniques, golfers must also be able to control their emotions. It’s all true that there is plenty to enjoy in the fresh air and social aspects of the game, but players must also realize that golf is a sport in which the mind plays a vital role. Experts will tell you that golfers spend an average of 90 percent of their time on the golf course thinking and 10 percent swinging and hitting the ball. This is why it’s so important to make the right decisions. Whether you’re a regular, occasional, or professional golfer, the object of the game stays the same. Apart from mastering techniques, golf requires concentration and will power. A good balance between discipline, the control of movements, and the psychological aspects of the game will add to your enjoyment and lead to success in this demanding sport. The first thing to realize is that you are, above all, playing for yourself and not for your partners. Set your objectives and give yourself the means of reaching them. Appreciate your good shots and learn to accept the poor ones. Did you miss a shot because you lifted your head or because your shoulders weren’t in the right position? Tell yourself that this lack of concentration is behind you. In other words don’t dwell on the past, continually thinking about the reasons for missing the shot, as this could well haunt you for the rest of the round. Success in golf largely depends on your ability to concentrate, to master the techniques of visualization, of positive thinking, and selfconfidence. In other words, you are the master of your own destiny!

if I can help get others to get involved by giving seedlings, that’s what I can do,” said Horvath. Daryl Ouellette, a retired teacher from CCVS, heard about the opportunity after her yoga teacher posted about it on Facebook. “I was quite happy to give up part of my vegetable garden, because Agapè helped out my students,” she said. “I’m paying it back now. Johanne Gauthier, the local food bank and community kitchen’s interim executive director and operations manager, addressed the gathering of families as they came to collect their plants from the farm. “Our clients really love the produce and that

means during tomato season, we don’t have to give cans of diced tomatoes. We really believe in this,” said Gauthier. “If we can get more fresh produce in July, August and September, so that we don’t have to buy any during those month, that gives us more money for milk, eggs and the things that we cannot collect through the food drives.” Emily Dale, a mother of three children aged 2 to 6 years old, took part in Hoople Creek Farm’s Community Supported Agriculture (CSA) last year. The CSA allows people to buy local produce directly from the farm all season long, much like a subscription. “We always have a small veggie garden in the

backyard and we thought since we’re growing vegetables anyways, we may as well grow some food for the Agapè Centre at the same time,” she said. “It’s good for the kids to grow up learning to give to others.” Gauthier elaborated on the non-profit’s shift to focus on being able to offer fresh foods to food bank users. “It’s been found that low wealth is highly co-related to low health,” Gauthier said, referring to Michael Pollan’s book In Defense of Food. “In a lot of foods like macaroni and cheese in boxes, people are over-fed but undernourished – they’re not getting the nutrients that they need for their bodies to do well.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Last year, Hoople Creek Farms donated plants for the Agapè Centre’s garden to grow produce for the food bank and soup kitchen. But this year, they want to get more hands dirty. The small-scale family farm in Ingleside’s owner/operators Judy Horvath and Jamie Creskey gave eight families enough seedlings to plant their own gardens to grow food to be donated the Agapè Centre. “I come from a family who was really into church and I always volunteered with children. I can’t volunteer very much now having a farm, so

Funding to our health care system will increase by over $1 billion this year.

Investing in new and better ways for all Ontarians to get the care they need means: • 700 new doctors and specialists • 35 hospitals currently being renewed, modernized or expanded • $250 million invested in home and community care • $345 million invested to improve wait times and access to care These investments ensure a strong health care system for both today and tomorrow.

Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy indicated Monday night United Counties council is receiving some pressure from lower-tier municipalities in the region to work more with Cornwall. But the mayor would not say specifically what that could mean moving forward. He added he has met with Warden Jamie MacDonald on the file. “Discussions are still going on between the city and the United Counties for 2017,” he said. “Don’t rule out the counties not being there in some form in 2017.”

So here we are almost 25 years later we hear the counties are pulling the funding and we are just readjusting.” The city is eyeing the possibility of creating a tourism officer, to be in place by next year. It’s unclear if such a position would be a full-time municipal job, or completed by contract. Cornwall and the Counties Tourism is currently funded by the City of Cornwall ($160,000), the United Counties of SD&G ($80,000), membership fees in both Cornwall and SD&G ($23,000), and marketing partnerships and

CORNWALL, Ontario – City hall is ready to bring tourism in-house and to market Cornwall from within the economic development department. Councillors voted Monday night to create an arm of the city’s economic development department that would be solely responsible for tourism in the city, along with some other community partners. Earlier this year the United Counties voiced

its desire to pull out of a funding agreement with the city that included the operation of Cornwall and the Counties Tourism. The United Counties voted to go it alone on the tourism file effective at the end of this year. The mood was somewhat somber among some city council members Monday night. “It feels like a defeat,” said Coun. Bernadette Clement. “I’m not going to argue against bringing it in-house. It can probably highlight to us the importance of tourism. It makes it less fragile. “I’m really saddened by this too. Since 1992

Waterfront lands and the case of the Keystone crooks

government is expected to provide some kind of compensation to clean the area up. How much and for how long is still a matter of debate. And it should be noted that Transport Canada isn’t about to give away prime waterfront real estate to the city and its partner, only to see it sold off or otherwise privately developed. So the notion of seeing more condos on the waterfront on that land is unlikely. In the short-term the future of that property is pretty clear – it will continue to look much as it does today. Coun. Bernadette Clement suggested Monday night this waterfront land partnership is more about optics than finance. The eyes of many across the country will be on Cornwall and Akwesasne in the months and years ahead. It will be up to this community, and our friends across the river in the forward-thinking First Nation, to prove that they can co-exist as joint administrators of the waterfront lands. I don’t have my history book in front of me, but surely this marks one of few occasions where a municipality and a First Nation reserve have been sewn at the hip as joint proprietors of such a high-profile piece of property. It says here if the relationship works, more of the same kind of partnerships can be created across the country. It will also show other politicians on a local level that cross-border partnerships can work. We have taken such positive steps when it comes to sharing water between Cornwall and South Glengarry – and also fallen back on the tourism file after a partnership between the city and the United Counties disintegrated. Growing our partnerships with our neighbours is the best way to move forward.

By the time the printed version of this missive hits the streets, Cornwall and Akwesasne will be the proud new owners of a small chunk of waterfront property in the city that has been the focus of criticism for years. Thursday marks the official turnover of the harbour lands in Cornwall to both the city and the First Nation. The land will be administered by a board made up of representatives from both communities. And something more important takes place that day too – we should all finally get a look at just what can be planned for the land and how long it will take to get a pair of controversial chemical tanks built there 2.5 years ago finally removed. You will remember, back in 2013, a Seaway News report blew the lid off the worst kept secret in Cornwall’s east end – that after years of battles to scrub the industrial stain off that part of our city a pair of chemical tanks were being built. In the wake of that news a push was made to finally assume ownership of the land – something that was considered as far back as the Phil Poirier mayoral administration but was ultimately shelved for another day. So on Thursday we, as a region, will finally own the property and the real work can begin. But just what will happen on that property is still anyone’s guess. The mayor let it slip Monday night that it will likely be the better part of two years before any kind of formal decision can be made to evict the tanks. As a consequence we have a wait on our hands. But then what happens to the land? Some, like Coun. Mark MacDonald, believe there’s an opportunity to make a ton of money off that property. How? Good question – I’m not sure we know the COMEDIC CROOKS answer to that just yet. Sure the federal You likely read the news last week concerning

Editor: An open letter to Premier Wynne: Now is the time to clean up the mercury poisoning in Grassy Narrows. Your government cannot continue to drag its feet on this issue. People’s lives are at stake. Sending Ministers Zimmer and Murray to Grassy Narrows today is a good step. But this cannot be a public relations exercise real, concrete steps must be taken. Scientists have concluded that it is possible to clean up the

mercury contamination in the English-Wabigoon River system. There are also reports indicating there may be a source of ongoing contamination. Over 500 citizens in the past week have taken the time to write your government a letter demanding action to clean up the mercury poisoning in Grassy Narrows. Thousands attended a rally and march at Queen’s Park. I ask you to listen to these concerns. We do not want to live in a province that allows its people to be poisoned. It’s clear a

the scene. But when the individual realizes there are no keys (don’t forget, the van was hot-wired), they instead get into the van (!) and drive it all the way across the parking lot and seemingly hide it from the robbers. Cue the hilarity. The robbers, after completing their tasks inside the pharmacy, race outside to find that not only has their getaway vehicle been stolen (or so they thought), but a person is filming their escape. I can almost picture these guys standing outside the pharmacy, a bag with a dollar sign emblazoned on the side, looking at each other and trying to figure out just what the hell went wrong. The source tells me the thieves finally spotted the van on the other side of the parking lot and took off towards it. At the same time they offered some colourful language in the direction of the individual filming the scene. Police are expected to make arrests soon. And if that movie ever becomes public I can’t wait to see it.

strategy of natural remediation is not working, and it’s been way too long without additional action. Your government has pledged action on the recommendations of the Truth and Reconciliation report. Specifically, Minister Zimmer promised “Ontario is working to provide the resources and space for Indigenous languages, traditions, teachings and governance to thrive.” Premier, how can the Grassy Narrows First Nation thrive when the river they rely on for

water, food and economy continues to be poisoned by mercury? I urge your government to take immediate action to clean up the mercury problems in Grassy Narrows. This includes physically removing mercury from polluted silt in the river system and limiting clear cut foresting in the area. I appreciate your attention to this important issue. an armed robbery at a local pharmacy. What you haven’t been told yet is the absolute hilarity with which the caper unfolded, thanks to a brave (some might say dumb) move by a person in the parking lot. According to a well-placed source at the Cornwall police station, the caper went down something like this: A pair of thieves steal a van, by smashing up the ignition and hot-wiring the vehicle. They make their way to the pharmacy, put some masks on their faces (bandanas or something to that effect) and race into the building to steal money and narcotics. What they didn’t know is that an individual, presumably waiting outside the pharmacy in their own vehicle, sees this and decides to take matters into their own hands. While filming with their phone, the individual approaches the van with the idea of removing the keys from the ignition – stranding the thieves at

OPINION

A huge challenge for motorists Claude McIntosh It is a law aimed at making roads safer for cyclists, and considering that more of them are on the roads, that is good. But the new law presents a huge challenge for motorists. In Ontario, drivers are now required to leave a minimum one-metre (for old school types, that is 39.3700789 inches) passing distance when overtaking a cyclist headed in the same direction. The penalty for not leaving the required one metre space is $110. Want to fight the ticket? You will be rolling the dice. Those who exercise their right to contest the ticket and lose could end up with a $500 fine as enhanced punishment. The challenge for drivers will be to figure out if they are giving a cyclist at least - the key words here are “at least” - one metre of clearance. Pretty tough to gauge one metre from behind the wheel. This becomes especially problematic on busy roadways with speed limits of 70 and 80kph. I’m thinking of Vincent Massey Drive and old Highway 2. Another is Marleau Avenue. The law reads that motorists can cross over the centre line when passing a cyclist but only if it is safe (aka common sense) to do so. Otherwise, the driver, if unable to provide the one metre safe zone, has to remain behind the cyclist(s) until it is safe to pass by easing into the other lane. So, if there is a convoy of cyclists, usually the Tour de France types who prefer paved roadways to much safer bike paths, you will have to wait and wait and wait. On a busy day on a roadway like Vincent Massey Drive this could mean a long line of cars

crawling along at about 10kph anxiously waiting for an opening. Sooner or later somebody, out of frustration, will take a chance, or simply pass within the required one metre safety zone. And when it comes to areas like downtown Cornwall and Le Village, with onstreet parking and parked transit buses, it is impossible to give a cyclist one-metre distance without pulling into the other lane. Good luck trying to enforce that one. VESTS: Bullet proof vests are not worn by umpires but the other night on a ball field in Battle Creek, Mich. it might have been a good piece of “just in case” protection. You know. Like if some agitated home fan yells “Shoot the umpire!”with a few hundred gun-packing fans sitting in the crowd. The minor league hometown Bombers celebrated Second Amendment Night (right to bear arms) by offering fans who showed up wearing side arms (file this under ‘Only in America’) free admission. It was held in conjunction with Boy Scout Night. That’s always a great combination. Always good to know the scout master is packing heat. Just to be on the safe side, of course, holsteredup fans had to show their permit allowing them to carry a sidearm. Not such a big safeguard considering the Orlando shooter had a firearm permit. In some states, anybody with an IQ over 26 can get a gun permit. Fortunately, the only shots fired during the ball game were a couple of out-of-the-park home runs ... by the home side. Meanwhile, in Huntsville, Alabama, a rare case

This was when hospital emergency rooms were for just that - emergencies. If you were really sick, the doctor, carrying his black bag, came to your home after his regular office hours. The big ailments for kids were whooping cough, mumps, measles and chicken pox. Every summer brought on the dreaded polio scare. In most cases, funeral homes operated an ambulance service on the side. In Cornwall, Miller’s Funeral Home on Augustus Street at the time had the city’s best known ambulance driver, Lawrence “Rat” Miller. Kids would spend days in the hospital after having their tonsils or adenoids removed, one of the most common surgeries for kids under the age of 14. There was no shortage of home remedies, the kind grandma swore by. Mustard plasters (poultices) were used for chest congestion, coughs, bronchitis and pneumonia. A bread poultice was a cure for infections. Honey and cinnamon mixed in hot water cured a sore throat as did a wool sock tied around the neck and left overnight. A drop or two of Vicks Vapour Rub in boiling water with the steam sucked into the nostrils with a towel draped over the head cleared up a stuffy nose. Some figured a hot rum toddy was just dandy. Some believed that a head cold could be cured by wearing socks stuffed with chopped onions to bed. Back before anti-septic mouth washes and throat lozenges, folks gargled with salt water. Then there was the adage “Take an Aspirin and call me in the morning.”

The chapter was formed in 1949 to look after the welfare and interests of widows and mothers of men who had given their lives in war. It started with 52 members but by 1979, with enrolment down to seven, the chapter was dissolved. The last president was Ida Alguire. She will cash in on the anybody-butTrump movement that is growing every time The Donald opens his mouth. ... When Ontario’s Conservative government under Mike Harris introduced much needed welfare reform, the cry from the Liberal and NDP benches was that it would drive more people into poverty. However, the Liberals have ruled the province since 2003 and during this time we are told by anti-poverty groups that the demand on food banks has gone through the roof.

Fish experts school the masses on eels Nick Seebruch Special to TC Media

CORNWALL, Ontario - Matt Windle of the St. Lawrence River Institute of Environmental Sciences held a presentation on the slippery slope that the eels of the St. Lawrence River have experienced at the annual Fish and Eel Day held at the Ontario Power Generation Visitor’s Centre on Saturday, June 25. “Fish and Eel day is one of our most popular workshops about nature along the St.Lawrence River,” Windle said. “Today is an opportunity to learn about the bio diversity of the river and about the native and invasive species living there.” One of the invasive species that Windle is concerned about is the Asian carp, particularly one species of Asian carp, the grass carp, an example of which was found in the St. Lawrence River near Montreal. The worry about the grass carp is the amount of vegetation that they can eat. “These fish grow quickly, they breed a lot and can eat 20 percent of their body mass in vegetation every day,” Windle said. The grass carp was intentionally introduced to North America by the United States, which wanted to use the fish to control the vegetation in the Mississippi River. The grass carp began to escape and make their way north however. Windle believes though that the grass carp found in the St. Lawrence was intentionally released there.

“There are too many turbines and too many dams for a fish that size to navigate for it to successfully make it this far north,” he said. Invasive species, pollution and a loss of habitat has threatened native species living in the St. Lawrence, including the eel. “At one time they were the most abundant fish in the river,” said Windle. “The current population is about one-to-two percent of what they once were.” One method to help the eels navigate the river are the eel ladders on the dams, like the one operated by Ontario Power Generation. The ladders help the eels make their way up stream. The eels grow up in Lake Ontario, but every 20 years or so, they travel along the St. Lawrence River and out to sea to return to their place of birth to spawn. Windle admits that there is still a lot that we do not know about eels. Things like where the eels spawn and how they get back remain a mystery. Workshops like Fish and Eel Day help the community learn the valuable information that we do know about this native species. Jenni Lounsberry, Amanda Cross and Andrew Wells stand in front of a tank containing minnows and Bowie, the bowfin fish, at the annual Fish and Eel Day at the Ontario Power Generation Visitor’s Centre on Saturday, June 25. Helping family The MacKay family, centre, is flanked by Christine Andrews, far right, and M&M’s Cornwall owner Derek Cayer. M&M’s and the Cornwall Police Association held a fundraising barbecue for the MacKay family that lost everything in a recent house fire. More than $6,100 was raised. City hall is ready to bring tourism in-house and to market Cornwall from within the economic development department. Councillors voted Monday night to create an arm of the city’s economic development department that would be solely responsible for tourism in the city, along with some other community partners. It will be interesting to see how this unfolds.

Many thanks for all the well wishes - you know who you are :)

The Cornwall General Hospital Class of 1966 recently celebrated their 50th Nursing Reunion at the annual Alumnae Dinner held June 17 at the Royal Canadian Legion. Looking good, ladies.

Masquer-aid 2016

A man joins a soccer team and his new teammates inform him, “At your first team dinner as the new guy, you will have to give us a talk about sex.” The evening arrives and he gives a detailed, humorous account of his sex life. When he got home, his wife asked how the evening went and not wanting to lie, but also not wanting to explain exactly what happened, he said, “Oh, I had to make a talk about yachting,” his wife thought this a little peculiar but said nothing more and went to sleep. The next day she bumped into one of his new teammates at the supermarket and asked, “I heard my husband had to make a speech last night. How did it go?” His mate said smiling, ‘Oh, it was excellent! Your husband is clearly very experienced!.” The wife looked confused and replied to his mate, “Strange, he has only done it twice and the second time he was sick.”

THANK YOU

SCUTTLEBUTT Pet Tip of the Week: During the summer months, remember, fireworks are terrifying for many pets. They will often run away, get lost and end up in animal shelters. When fireworks displays are planned, leave your pet at home and play music or the television to help disguise the noise. Close windows and blinds or curtains. Learn more at: ontariospca.ca/petsafety

Please report any suspected animal cruelty or abuse by calling the OSPCA at 1-888-668-7722, Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-TIPS, your local animal shelter at 613-936-0072 or the local Police Dept. Unlike most crime victims, animals can’t seek help for themselves. They depend on you to stop their suffering and if you don’t call, who will?

613-938-7244 • www.bobscycle.ca FEEL FREE TO WATER: City council has poured cold water on a plan to ask residents to restrict lawn watering. Most councillors were vehemently opposed to a recommendation from administrators that would have seen watering restricted to alternate days according to even and odd civic addresses. GREAT NEW DIGS: The Glen Walter branch of the South Glengarry Fire Service celebrated the opening of their new fire hall on Saturday, June 25. After ten years of effort, the community of Glen Walter now has a fire station to better meet their needs. Those who organized the celebrations at East Front and Gladstone Public Schools did an awesome job. School is out and with it comes great times for kids and stressful times for parents!! Drivers, please be extra cautious when driving and be prepared to stop suddenly. Children sometimes get excited and can forget the rules of the road.
