CITY POOL: Freon exposure to the public likely minimal, says parks and rec manager Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Swimmers at the Cornwall Aquatic Centre were exposed to a chemical leak that sent pool employees to the hospital and forced the closure of the facility.

A source has provided Seaway News with information that suggests a two-inch hole in a refrigerant supply line ruptured last Wednesday, June 8, spraying the interior of the aquatic centre with Freon. This newspaper has learned the leak initally went undetected and created a haze within the facility that worsened throughout the day.

A source tells Seaway News the leak spread for several hours before it was discovered and a decision was made to close the facility. In that time staff at the aquatic centre, and swimmers, were exposed to the material.

Seaway News has uncovered that three staffers at the pool later complained of symptoms including nose bleeds, eye irritation, nausea and missed work as a result of the incident. The employees were urged to visit the hospital, but not until the next day.

A city social media post on June 8 suggested programming at the facility would be suspended “due to a mechanical issue.” No other details were provided by the city at the time, but following this report the city issued a media release at about 5:30 p.m. Monday.

That delay is not sitting well with members of council.

“Obviously someone in that chain of

command has to identify this as something that has to go out to the members of the public,” said Coun. Maurice Dupelle, who has been critical of the city’s communication practices in the past. “I don’t have any information at this point – if the city is supposed to be letting the residents know and raising the alarm bell, usually there is a protocol that is followed.”Dupelle said council had not been officially advised of any issues at the pool, though members have been cc’d on some emails.

“I’m trying to get a hold of (CAO Maureen Adams) to get those questions answered to find out why we weren’t notified. I would think the general manager from that department would be sending out a quick email as a line of communication.”

Coun. Claude McIntosh was likewise blindsided by the news.

“We shouldn’t be hearing this from people like you,” he said of media calls. “You have all the info and I don’t have anything.”

Parks and recreation manager Jamie Fawthrop told Seaway News the incident was not released by the city because it was felt exposure to the public was minimal and decision-makers did not want to create unnecessary fear.

“We don’t want to create any kind of hysteria that the pool is unsafe,”he said. “The pool was shut down and the issue was fixed. By six the next morning the pool was reopened.

“You don’t want to create some sort of fear out there that it is not a safe facility.

“It’s hard to kind of gauge…you don’t want the

public to sort of overreact to it.”

Fawthrop said the city shared information with hospital staff so that if members of the public presented in the emergency room with symptoms consistent with Freon exposure doctors would know the source. “I contacted the hospital and told them we were sending (employees) to the hospital. I let them know what the timeline was,” he added. “We don’t believe that there was any kind of serious health threats to the public.

“It’s our staff who would have been the most exposed having been in there for the longest period of time.”

Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy could not provide details on the issue, and he added council is not in a position to provide direction to administrators on an incident like this.

“Do I feel that I have to be notified every time something happens in regards to health and safety? No I don’t. That’s why we have administration,” he said. “We don’t fix health and safety issues.

“Administration, once they became aware of it, are on top of it.”

The mayor said the city is still investigating the issue.

“Exactly how things transpired…we don’t really know,” he said.

City human resources manager Geoff Clarke confirmed three pool employees were affected by the leak.

Clarke said the leak came from an elbow joint within the HVAC system at the facility.

He could not answer questions as to why the public was not made aware of this issue sooner.

Tommy Sauve, the city’s health and safety officer, said he took action as soon as he was notified of the issue at the pool.

“Once I was made aware of it, I immediately contacted the supervisor and gave a direction to get a hold of the employees and to send them to the hospital,” he said. “And then I initiated an internal health and safety claim and the documents were filed for WSIB.” Municipal managers had to be called in last week to reassure concerned aquatic centre staffers, many of whom were worried about the status of the facility. And perhaps most troubling is that this is not the first time concerns have arisen at the aquatic centre.

Seaway News has in its possession municipal documentation which suggests several other occasions like this have taken place where employees have been exposed for hours while repairmen try to isolate a problem.

The aquatic centre reopened to public use the next day after the hole had been repaired and the air cleared of Freon.

Mild symptoms of Freon exposure include excitability, dizziness, changes in heart rate and headaches. The lining of the throat or nose may become irritated, and the throat may swell. Pain in any exposed mucous membranes, such as the mouth, throat or eyes, is common after exposure.

These symptoms can occur within minutes. More serious symptoms can occur after prolonged exposure.

Freon is used as a refrigerant in HVAC systems and air conditioners.

Cash seized at border

A new Canadian treatment for late-stage multiple sclerosis patients was the talk of the Joan Pearson Memorial Golf Tournament Friday.

The tournament, named after Pearson who helped countless MS patients in the region, was abuzz concerning a treatment where doctors harvest stem cells from the bone marrow of their patients.

Some participants in the treatment have recovered lost vision, regained mobility and have even returned to work.

The cells are then purified and frozen.

Patients are subjected to high doses of chemotherapy drugs, similar to those used to treat cancer. The preserved stem cells are then returned to the patients.

A grassroots initiative is underway to take back the St. Lawrence River from garbage.

Local river volunteers are reclaiming it for drinking water, fishing, swimming, and recreation by literally diving in to clean it up.

The Great St. Lawrence River Cleanup will kick off a summer of in-river and shoreline cleanup sessions this coming Saturday, June 18 beginning at 9 am at Gray’s Creek.

Over the past year local anglers, divers, and members of the general public have become frustrated that the River has turned into a repository for all sorts of debris. Everything from old tires and barrels to shopping carts and fire extinguishers are regularly discarded into the water and along local shorelines.

Border officers in Cornwall seized nearly $130,000 in undeclared U.S. currency from two Canadians trying to enter the country. The Canada Border Services Agency made the announcement Monday of the large seizure.

CBSA said the incident took place May 21 when two people tried to bring in $129,000 in 13 shrink-wrapped bags. The smaller bags were contained within a grocery bag. The individuals were referred to a secondary examination to assess the legitimacy of one of their travel documents. At the same time, officers searched their vehicle and discovered the cash. The individuals were detained and subsequently released after being informed that the money was being seized under the Proceeds of Crime (Money Laundering) and Terrorist Financing Act.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Nearly three-quarters of the entire Cornwall Fire Service roster includes personnel who live outside the city, according to a document provided to Seaway News.

Even fire chief Pierre Voisine, who has been on the job for about a year and half, resides out of the city. Voisine, who said in an interview his house is for sale and he is planning a move closer to Cornwall, has his voisine address listed as Rockland – more than 80 km from here on the banks of the Ottawa River.

Some Cornwall firefighters don’t even live in this province. Two members of the service reside in Quebec, including one in St. Catherine (south of Montreal) and another in Gatineau. On top of that Seaway News has learned that there are members of the Cornwall Fire Service who belong to the volunteer fire departments in the communities in which they live. None of this is illegal. Despite court challenges no municipality has won the right to tell an employee where they can live, said Cornwall human resources manager Geoff Clarke, who added the city does not keep records on the addresses of its staff for comparative reasons.

And to be fair other municipal departments including police, public works and administration have their fair share of individuals who live outside Cornwall’s boundaries, including out of province.

But questions are starting to circulate about how effectively a city can administer an emergency department, like the fire service, when a number of individuals live in outlying districts.

“I don’t really know,” said Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. “Certainly it’s never been brought up to me before as being an issue. I do believe if the chief is finding it an issue, then certainly it should be brought forward to council to possibly look for other ways to manage. “The thing is we have no right to tell people where to live as a municipality.

“It does create hurdles, (but) whether it impacts our service is something I would have to hear from the chief for me to make a determination.”

And the message from the chief is loud and clear: we have no problems in Cornwall.

“Not at all. We have a system where we call guys back,” he said. “Fire is all about initial response. Very rarely do we need more than what we have at the onset of the incident. But we make the decision early in the incident to call back however many bodies they need. “And it works. In fact it works so well there seems to be a bit of an uproar that mutual aid was called for like the first time ever.”

A source provided the list of fire personnel, and their addresses, to Seaway News as a direct result of an incident two weeks ago when the Cornwall Fire Service activated its mutual aid agreement with South Stormont. About a dozen outside people were brought in to give respite to city firefighters battling the flames at the Ontario Hockey Academy (OHA).

At the time the city service was having difficulty reaching Cornwall firefighters because of a problematic communication system.

But one city councillor who has been vocal in his opinions about the fire service, has concerns.

“When you have to call 48 people to get eight in…the response time is not there,” said Coun.

Andre Rivette. “They should be within 15 or 20 minutes for a response time.

“The chief should be setting an example.”

And while the mayor suggested the city’s hands are tied when it comes to municipal employees and where they reside, he defended the fire chief – who will soon be living closer to Cornwall (if not in it) when his move is complete.

“We hired the best man (Voisine) qualified to do the job,” said O’Shaughnessy. “Remembering the chief doesn’t fight fires. He has his role of managing the fire department. And when you take a step back you can look at that as an eight to 4:30

Little chance of Highway 138 moving to four lanes: consultant

CORNWALL, Ontario – The chances of Highway 138 becoming a four-lane thoroughfare, or even seeing a bypass created, appears to be slim and none according to a presentation made at city hall Monday night.

City councillors heard from consultants and Ministry of Transportation officials during a regular meeting where they were told a study is being completed on possible improvements for the dangerous stretch of roadway that has seen plenty of high-profile accidents.

But the list of improvements stops at intersection augmentation and the introduction of turning lanes, passing lanes and carpool parking areas.

“We are looking at the existing 138 corridor as a two-lane facility…we’re not looking at expanding to a four-lane facility and we’re not looking at a bypass,” said Greg Cooke, project manager with consulting firm Stantec Design.

The Ministry of Transportation is in the midst of reviewing safety improvements for Highway 138.

The study will include public engagement through community gatherings, online feedback and attendance at area council meetings as ministry officials gather details to someday make adjustments to 35 km of road that has seen people killed in tragic automobile accidents.

Motorists have long complained that other drivers speed along Highway 138 and there are too few areas to safely pass.

“This has been a problem in this area for a long, long time,” said Coun. Bernadette Clement.

Coun. Claude McIntosh advocated for the introduction of passing lanes.

“I look at Highway 2 between here and Ingleside and I think the traffic flow is about the same,” he said. “But the big difference between the two is the heavy transport traffic.

You can get stuck behind one of those things…and people take chances pulling out.

The extra lanes really help.

“That would be a huge improvement.”

The ministry is putting together a plan for improving the highway and addressing future operational needs of the 138.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The protest of Hydro One in front of MPP Jim McDonell’s office was hampered by rain, but organizer Dave Varin said that the most important supporter, Jim McDonell, was there.

“At least I got to meet Jim,” Varin said, “He was kind enough to show up.”

Varin was the only protester from the group Hydro One, Enough is Enough, who made it to the planned protest on Saturday, June 11, in front of McDonell’s office on Second Street West.

Holding a sign which read “Paying 70% more for Quebec residents is unfair,” Varin said that the people of Ontario should not have to choose between paying for Hydro and paying their mortgage.

“The Liberal Government has made a mess of the energy file and they are continuing on a trajectory that will continue to make life in Ontario unaffordable for its residents and uncompetitive for its businesses,” McDonell told The Seaway News. “We have seen that only public outrage and public protests, like this, have had any success in forcing them reconsider their policies.”

In May, the Liberal Government of Premier Kathleen Wynne drew criticism for proposing to phase out natural gas for home heating and was eventually forced to back-track on the issue.

The quartet of Ian Thomas, Murray McLauchlan, Marc Jordan and Cindy Church continue to come together regularly for a stroll down Memory Lane that includes hit songs from the 1970s and other musical eras.

The performers will be in Cornwall June 18 at Aultsville Theatre for a show that will be equal parts intimacy and nostalgia. “I’ve never been a big fan of arena shows because they’re not about the music - they’re about the spectacle,” Thomas said in an interview with Seaway News. “For me doing these theatre tours with Lunch at Allen’s, it’s way more conversational. As a performer it’s far more enjoyable and I know as an audience it has to be far more enjoyable too.”

Lunch at Allen’s was created about 14 years ago when the four friends gathered at the Toronto eatery to discuss McLauchlan’s heart bypass surgery.

“The thing with Lunch at Allen’s is we’re all such good friends,” said Thomas. “We’ve all done the star turns…and we’re just so comfortable in our own skins and our relationships. And our relationships are quite humourous. We delight in having a run at each other.”

Thomas said the audience is very much involved in the show, and can often be found singing the same songs being performed on the stage. He added their works sets the group apart from what is found on radio today.

“I think the music sort of speaks for itself,” said Thomas. “Because we are in sort of a ‘Pound yourself to death’ with music right now…it’s a malignant 24/7 disco. All of the music is one kind of theme basically.

“And our songs are sort of about life. A younger generation coming out to see us… they’re up for the songs – which is great because it is different from what you will hear on mainstream radio.”

HELPING HANDS: Strangers come to aid of boy who was struck by car Todd Lihou

CORNWALL, Ontario – A Cornwall mom is thanking complete strangers who came the aid of her young son who was struck by a car on a busy city street. Caroline Weight’s 12-year-old son Benjamin was biking home last Friday from Ecole L’Heritage to the family’s Riverdale-area home

when he came to the intersection at Montreal Road and Albert Street.

“I stopped and looked both ways,” assured Benjamin, who was travelling on the sidewalk on the south side of the street.

As he proceeded through the intersection a “red car” swooped in and hit the Grade 7 student, sending both him and his bicycle crashing to the street.

Benjamin is a little hazy on the details, but he remembers the occupants of the car asking him if he was ok, before speeding off.

It was then that some Good Samaritans at nearby Chez Liz, a Montreal Road eatery, stepped in to help. Benjamin, who was slightly injured, was ushered in to the establishment. At the same time a couple of patrons piled into their vehicle and followed the car that hit Benjamin…all the way to Summerstown, while at the same time remaining on the phone with police. Weight said she was in the midst of grocery shopping when she received a call.

“A woman told me she was with my son, he had been in a car accident but he was ok,” she

said. “I just left the groceries at Food Basics and went down.

“The people were wonderful. It was just so comforting.”

Chez Liz owner Lisanne Seguin said her customers are “heroes. They really helped out.”

Police later told Weight that officers stopped the car that struck her son and charges have been laid.

“I’m just so happy that my son is alive,” she said.

Amanda Flanigan and Cindy Trudell were among the patrons who helped out at the scene.

“I’m just so glad it worked out so well,” said Trudell.

LONG SAULT, Ontario – A renowned military re-enactment organization and a local heritage site have joined forces to preserve the memory of thousands of soldiers.

Launched Saturday at the Lost Villages Museum, the Grays and Blues of Montreal and the Lost Villages Historical Society, unveiled an exciting campaign to raise $40,000 to erect a monument on the museum grounds dedicated to the 40,000 Canadian soldiers who fought during the American Civil War (1861-65).

The proposed 14-ft, black granite monument is anticipated to be completed by September, 2017, during Canada’s 150th birthday and approximately 150 years after the war ended.

Rob McLachlan, president and officer commanding of the Grays and Blues, was delighted the LVHS agreed to collaborate with them for the project.

“We couldn’t have chosen a finer site for the monument,” McLachlan stated. “The American Civil War is a lesser-known part of our heritage and should be remembered.

“This will be the first-ever significant Canadian monument dedicated to preserving the memory of our ancestors who fought in it.”

Approximately $10,000 has already been committed towards the project which was launched online Saturday through a GoFundMe campaign.

“We’re raising a dollar for every Canadian veteran,” McLachlan added.

A YouTube video, designed by LVHS member and digital curator, Brendan Bronzan, was also shown during the launch Saturday.

As well, links to it and the fundraising campaign are detailed on the Lost Villages Facebook page and at www.graysandbluesofmontreal.com Donations of $20 or more are eligible for tax receipts through the LVHS. Personalized engraved bricks that will line the pathway to the monument will be available for donations of $115. Fire and Freon, a tale of two sources Todd Lihou

Fawthrop, the city’s manager of parks and recreation had a logical explanation for why the details weren’t immediately released to the public: the city didn’t want to scare people.

Fair enough. Sharing bad news is never pleasant. But in a city this small it’s probably a safe bet to assume nothing is ever going to be kept secret.

It’s wiser to get in front of an issue like a Freon leak at the aquatic centre with a press release that says something like:“A small Freon leak at the facility resulted in minor injuries to three employees who were cleared by doctors of serious health concerns. Exposure to the public is believed to be minimal, but those with concerns are advised to speak with a doctor.” At that point the city is in the driver’s seat and is shaping the message. Instead we get late-night phone calls, headlines concerning chemical leaks and this mess.

It’s not Woodward and Bernstein, but it’s certainly a little more exciting than a church bake sale (which we love covering as well).

On top of all this councillors like Maurice Dupelle and others have been screaming about the city’s inability to effectively communicate with the public. The Freon leak at the aquatic centre, and subsequent lack of information from city hall, only reinforces this argument.

It’s time the accountability and transparency many members of city council were elected to enforce become a reality. Sadly it appears the message is being lost.

You know it never rains, but it pours.

Last week yours truly was contacted by not one, but two confidential sources with access to internal City of Cornwall documents.

By now you will have already read a pair of stories we broke as a consequence – one of great public importance and the other a little further down the priority list.

We survive in this business on our ability to disseminate this information fairly and accurately while also keeping our sources out of the public eye. It ruffles feathers, to be sure, among the administration and on occasion even readers.

But it’s what we do.

I received a late-night phone call a few days ago from a source who wanted to know if I was alone.

“Have you heard about what happened at the aquatic centre?”“I heard it was closed for maintenance.” The source then went on tell me about chemical leaks, hospital visits and a perceived campaign to keep these details from the public. My response was something akin to “Holy spit”…only I didn’t say spit. What resulted was our story on a Freon leak at the aquatic centre that left three city staffers complaining of nausea, nose bleeds and eye irritations among other things. They missed work and had to visit the hospital. Members of the public were exposed to the Freon too, though likely in smaller doses than pool staffers who spent all day with the stuff. The story explained, with as much detail as we felt comfortable releasing, that about three-quarters of the fire department lives outside the city. We have a lot more details, including addresses right down to the last postal code digit and home phone numbers, but our job is not to out firefighter‘X’with these facts.

Instead our report was meant to foster some public debate as a consequence of Ontario Hockey Academy fire a couple of weeks ago that required outside help to douse. Like it or not, the fire service is under the microscope right now. And, sadly, it is losing the PR war. Some, mostly firefighters and their spouses, were critical of our decision to run the story. The fact is the first person I called upon receiving the roster was Jason Crites, the president of the firefighter union. I even met him minutes

later in his Long Sault driveway to personally lay out what I had received, and gave him a day to collect his response to the story we were planning.

Ditto the fire chief, whom we met later in the day and likewise provided extra time to formulate responses to our questions.

I can think of other journalists (well, one anyway) who would have run the list, verbatim, without so much as a whisper from the people actually impacted.

Our story wasn’t meant so much to point a finger at the fire department, but instead clear the air on subject matter that has been making the rounds in our community for years. So if we’re going to talk about this issue, let’s at least have the facts to do so.

Our story accomplished that.

It’s all fun and games ‘til someone gets a puck to the teeth won’t happen, but can lessen the risk or severity of accidents.

Three types of mouthguards range in price, effectiveness and comfort: stock, mouth-formed and custom. Stock mouthguards fit generically, driving down price, but limiting comfort. They’re made of rubber or polyvinyl, which can give them a bulky feel. Generally loose fitting, they can interfere with breathing and speech, and raise potential for sore jaw muscles. Stock mouthguards offer the least amount of protection, and may be a wasted expense if they’re not used due to discomfort.

The second type of mouthguard is mouthformed, or “boil-and-bite”. This type of guard is more tailored than stock mouthguards.

OPINION alerted, slipped out the back door with $95 taken from the employees who had been tied up.

Police believed they had a stand-off on their hands. It wasn’t until two hours later that the somewhat embarrassed police realized the men had fled the bank.

Meanwhile, not far from the bank the two men, believing police were searching for them, had invaded another home and held the residents hostage. When they heard on the radio that police had the bank surrounded, they left. One grabbed the resident’s jacket on the way out. It was a critical mistake, thanks to the traffic cop’s intuition.

For whatever reason, the two decided to stay in the city. They rented a motel room, perhaps to avoid police roadblocks and wait for things to cool down.

“When I passed them there was just something that didn’t seem right about them,” Jodoin recalled 43 years later. “Just the way they looked at me.”

Jodoin decided to check them out. He turned and followed them into the Woolco parking lot (now Lowes). The suspects’ car moved from parking spot to parking spot, trying to avoid the cruiser.

The traffic cop pulled them over. After a few questions, something didn’t seem right. So, acting on another hunch, Jodoin decided to take them to the station. City and OPP investigators - the OPP inspector sent in from Toronto was regarded as one of the best in the province - were huddled in a room. To Jodoin’s surprise they showed little urgency in questioning his two persons of interest sitting in the station lobby. They felt the people

they were looking for had fled the city.

Jodoin took it upon himself to search the pockets of the jacket one suspect was wearing (taken from the residence). He found an Avco Finance payment receipt. The name on the receipt didn’t match the name of his suspect. He showed investigators the receipt. They reluctantly brought the man into the room to be questioned. They determined he was just a university student with no connection to the case and released him.

Meanwhile, the other man, left alone in the lobby while his buddy was being questioned, got up and walked out the front door of the station. No doubt he figured the handcuffs would soon be coming out.

This was a time when armed bank robberies were more frequent, often pulled off by experienced gangs, not by young university students.

For investigators, the two men Jodoin had brought to the station didn’t fit the profile. So they had a “get out of here and quit wasting our time” attitude.

However, investigators soon realized the traffic cop had brought two of the men involved in the robbery to the station, and that they had let them walk away.

At least, thanks to Jodoin’s hunch, they had two of the suspects identified. One, a Cornwall native, was a student at McGill University.

The hunt was on.

Four days later the Cornwall native was arrested in Montreal. Acting on information supplied by the arrested man, two others were arrested on Feb. 16 in Sarnia. The fourth was arrested in London on March 1. All were in their

early 20s.

On April 9, 1973, the four pleaded guilty to kidnapping, armed robbery and attempted bank robbery. Each was given an eight-year jail sentence.

Court was told the men wanted to use money from the bank robbery to help poor native people living in Northern Ontario and the North Vietnamese people.

While investigators were taking a victory lap, the cop who played the key unheralded role in breaking the case, was back on traffic patrol.

Without Jodoin playing a hunch on the evening of Feb. 6, 1973 police might still be looking for the four suspects.

TRIVIA ANSWER Land north of the old CNR main line (Ninth Street) became known as“Garden City” because financially challenged residents who lived in poor housing used vacant land to plant large gardens. Seeds and plants were provided by the welfare office. Many of the poorly built houses were constructed during the 1930s.

Some had dirt floors. The closest school was St. Francis de Sales, a one-mile walk. Residents didn’t have cars and there were no buses. Notre Dame School was built in the “Garden City” area in 1942 to encourage young people to attend school.

TRIVIA This place of worship was built in 1904 on First Street West. It was torn down in 1962. The site is now a municipal parking lot.

Ray Jodoin had a gut feeling something wasn’t right when a vehicle with two men passed his city police cruiser on Brookdale Avenue on Feb. 6, 1973.

The traffic cop was on routine patrol, but what happened a day earlier was anything but routine for city police and the OPP. The chain of bizarre events started Sunday evening - Feb. 4 - when four young men forced their way into the home of bank manager Bob Evans just outside Martintown. They held Evans and his family - wife and three children - captive overnight. Early the next morning, Evans was taken to his Bank of Montreal branch at Pitt and Fourteenth streets by two of the men.

The plan was to have the manager open the vault. They would grab the money, and make a clean getaway before employees arrived for work.

They would be long gone by the time police were alerted.

But there was a problem. The vault was on a time lock. It couldn’t be opened until the branch opened for business. One by one, arriving employees were taken hostage. But one employee, the last to show up for work, sensed something was wrong inside the bank. So, she crossed the street and called city police.

Minutes after police placed a call to the bank the wrong code word was given by the manager who was instructed by the would-be robbers to answer the telephone - they had the street closed off and the branch surrounded. Calls by police to the branch were not answered.

That was because the crooks, realizing the cops had been

CORNWALL, Ontario - On June 11, the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation held its fourth annual Denim and Diamonds dinner at the NAV Centre.

“Every year we throw the best patio party of the summer,” said Allan Wilson, the Chair of the Foundations Board of Directors. “And every year we raise money to help the Cornwall Hospital better serve the community.”

The Denim and Diamonds dinner is the signature social event for the Foundation.

“Local businesses are the backbone of every charity,” Foundation Treasurer Dale McSween said. “Events like these help raise awareness for the Cornwall Community Hospital Foundation

and the work it does.”

This year, money raised from the dinner will be used to help fund the construction of a new addiction and mental health centre on the corner of McConnell and Ninth Street.

McSween hoped to raise $60,000 from this year’s dinner and said that the Foundation would contribute $1 million to the new centre over three years.

Attendees to the event had the opportunity to bid on a variety of prizes in the silent auction, including tickets to UFC Fight Night at TD Place, Red Blacks tickets and a Budweiser toolbox cooler.

The jewel of the prizes on offer at the Denim and Diamonds dinner was a diamond ring valued at $5, 200 sponsored by Pommier Jewellers, the NAV Centre and Rogers Marina.

City, Anderson Drive residents come to agreement on road improvements Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Road work on Anderson Drive in Cornwall will now shift easterly and include a sidewalk on the west side that is set back about two metres from the property line – addressing concerns by angry residents who filed a petition against the work.

The city will also dip into capital reserves to the tune of $135,000 to improve street lights on Anderson as well.

The move took place as a result of a meeting weeks ago where Coun. Maurice Dupelle complained that residents on Anderson were not provided with enough time to voice concerns over the road work taking place.

But earlier this month Dupelle sat in on a meeting between residents and city managers where a solution was found.

“It was great to see that community engagement take place,” he said. Dupelle has been critical of city engagement with the

public and a lack of communication in some instances.

Residents on the street had signed a lengthy petition asking that the city reconsider some of its reconstruction which includes sidewalk work, sewer replacement and changes to the width of boulevards.

Coun. Bernadette Clement said the work is required, but was happy both sides could come to an agreement.

“This is an exercise in urban planning and community development at the same time,”

she said. “It’s a lovely street – it’s a beautiful spot but the sidewalks are in bad shape and the street lights are even worse.”

Coun. Elaine MacDonald, though, warned that the city cannot bend over backwards to “move a street” every time complaints are filed. She deemed the solution a “Hail-Mary pass” that worked.

A similar petition has been filed with the city by St. Felix residents because of work taking place on their street.

CORNWALL,Ontario - Encouraged by the lucky break in the weather on Friday, more than 30 citizen cyclists enjoyed an entertaining two-hour night ride on the city’s recreational path. The evening started with a quick meet-and-greet session at 8pm at the Bandshell in Lamoureux Park followed by a sunset cycle to the ice cream shop at Archie’s Family Golf, and a moonlit return trip.

The near 15-kilometre journey attracted pedal pushers of all ages that decorated their bikes with glow sticks and flashy lighting. The Garcia siblings— Bruno, 5, Natalia, 7, and Bernardo, 9—were among the youngest participants.

“It’s all a bit tiring,” admitted the eldest, enjoying a cold drink at the halfway mark. “But I like it anyway because it’s really fun and exciting. And you get to be with friends.”

The inaugural event, organized by the Cornwall Outdoor Club de Plein Air in partnership with Transition Cornwall+, was held to support the local Active Transportation Challenge held from June 5 to 11. The annual challenge seeks to encourage active and sustainable modes of travel around the city and surrounding areas.

Coun. Bernadette Clement decided to join the ride despite some apprehension.

“I haven’t ridden a bike in 10 years so I’m excited but nervous,”she said before hitting the trail. “I’m participating in active transportation week by walking instead of driving to get lunch and carpooling to different city events, and I felt it was important to be part of this too.”

Clement’s riding mate, Stephen Alexander, former General Manager of Planning, Parks and Recreation for the City of Cornwall, enjoyed the rec path in a different light.

“I’ve ridden some of the urban bike path at night but riding the recreational trail in the dark was really interesting,” he explained. “And the ice cream was a real bonus!”

“It’s really nice to have free activities in our community that everyone can participate in,” said Monique Branchaud, a local triathlete. She was pleased with the opportunity to meet new people, get some exercise and increase her odds for a good night’s sleep.

Event organizer and past president of the outdoor club, Kevin O’Rourke, was buoyed by the outcome.

“This isn’t the first cycling event the outdoor club has put on but this is certainly our first night ride,” he said.“We’re excited by the turnout and we hope to do this again next year so we can continue promoting active transportation.”

Je pense que d’ici vendredi prochain, on devrait être en mesure de commencer.»

Rappelons que Croisière Outaouais a obtenu le contrat pour des excursions sur le canal Rideau à Ottawa et pour se faire, a décidé de faire construire un bateau électrique. Ce dernier est présentement testé par Transport Canada qui doit donner son accord.

Les tests effectués jusqu’à maintenant ont bien été, souligne M. Taillefer. «C’était pas mal comme on s’y attendait», note-t-il.

Même si le bateau est en attente de sa certification, la ministre de l’Environnement, Catherine McKenna, a procédé à l’inauguration de la nouvelle offre touristique jeudi matin.

Après une absence d’un an des tours sur le canal Rideau, Mme McKenna s’est réjouie de l’arrivée de ce bateau électrique. «Ce sera une expérience plus plaisante, a-t-elle noté. Et ça diminue les impacts pour notre environnement.»

Le Rouge et Noir pratique en sol outaouais une école secondaire. L’autre fois, sur un terrain de football avec des jeunes joueurs.

Il a récemment effectué une visite dans la Ligue de football mineur de l’Outaouais, en plus d’une présence à des camps.

On devrait le voir encore plus souvent. JeanGuy Gorley, ambassadeur francophone du Rouge et Noir, avance que l’équipe en fera beaucoup plus au fil des prochaines semaines.

Il pourrait ne pas être le seul. On pourrait se servir du Gatinois Mikaël Charland pour mousser le club de football canadien.

Le choix de deuxième tour en 2016 a refoulé le gazon artificiel sur lequel il avait fait la pluie et le beau temps dans l’uniforme des Griffons du Cégep de l’Outaouais.

«C’était différent. Un autre uniforme et je n’ai pas entendu la voix de l’annonceur-maison», a souligné l’athlète de 6’4 et 216 lbs.

«Mais ça fait du bien de revenir chez soi, de faire un retour aux sources. J’avais des parents et des amis qui étaient là pour me voir.»

Un samedi venteux avec un ciel gris et des risques d’averses. Qu’à cela ne tienne, ce n’est pas ce qui allait empêcher des centaines de partisans de se masser autour du stade Mont-Bleu.

Pour quelle raison étaient-ils si nombreux?

Le Rouge et Noir d’Ottawa traversait à nouveau la rivière – une troisième fois en autant d’années – afin d’aller à la rencontre de leurs partisans de Gatineau.

Un exercice mis en place par le directeur général Marcel Desjardins afin de récupérer les fans qui se sont tournés vers les Alouettes de Montréal.

Et il semblerait que l’allégeance change tranquillement. Plusieurs adeptes du ballon ovale encouragent désormais la formation de la capitale nationale aux dépens de celle de la métropole québécoise.

Certains avaient même revêtu leur chandail local d’Ottawa où on pouvait voir le nom d’Antoine Pruneau ainsi que son numéro 6 être arborés fièrement.

L’ancien des Carabins de l’Université de Montréal est rapidement devenu un chou-chou du public gatinois.

«C’est toujours le fun venir ici, a indiqué Pruneau, qui a justement remarqué que des partisans portaient son chandail. Ça nous sort de notre horaire habituel et ça nous permet de nous rapprocher des gens. En plus, c’est dans un environnement francophone.»

Dernier droit avant l’ouverture du Simons au Centre Rideau D’ici la fin de l’été, un second magasin Simons verra le jour près d’ici, cette fois-ci sur la rive ontarienne. Un choix d’emplacement qui est loin d’avoir été laissé au hasard.

Lors de notre passage, les travailleurs s’affairaient dans les différentes sections du futur magasin, afin que tout soit en place, l’ouverture officielle étant prévu dans un peu plus de deux mois.

Si tout va bien, le magasin qui surplombe l’aile récemment agrandie du centre commercial, au coin des rues Rideau et Nicholas, ouvrira ses portes le 11 août prochain. Le président-directeur-général est confiant que tout tombera en place dans les délais, alors que les travaux sont en cours depuis près d’un an.

Le magasin du Centre Rideau devient le 13e au pays, et le deuxième en Ontario. «C’est une ville qu’on regardait depuis longtemps», admet M. Simons. L’entreprise avait dans son giron la capitale du pays depuis près de deux décennies. «Il y a vingt ans, il y avait une différente vision urbaine du centre-ville d’Ottawa et je ne savais pas trop où était ma place dans tout cela», admet-il.

Et depuis les cinq dernières années, l’entreprise familiale cherchait le bon partenaire pour se lancer dans le projet. Le développement urbain et la vision actuelle du centre-ville plaisaient à Peter Simons.

«C’était la bonne opportunité pour le long terme», estime le président-directeur-général, qui rappelle l’importance pour l’entreprise de croire en son magasin.

Le magasin comptera deux étages sur une superficie d’environ 10 000 mètres carrés. Parmi les caractéristiques exclusives au magasin d’Ottawa, les rayons de la mode masculine seront regroupés dans une aire entièrement dédiée à l’homme, reliés par des escaliers menant à l’étage supérieur. Puis, les marques Djab et Twik, populaires chez les jeunes, seront aussi dans une même section, qui sera accessible du mail.

Comme dans tous les magasins Simons, celui du Centre Rideau aura aussi une œuvre d’art d’un artiste canadien, cette fois-ci de Shayne Dark, avec Torrential Red, une sculpture suspendue qui dominera l’atrium de l’escalier roulant reliant les deux étages.

Alors que le magasin Simons de Gatineau a ouvert ses portes il y a dix mois, Peter Simons assure que l’un ne nuira pas à l’autre, le milieu étant différent. «Gatineau, c’est une expérience classique, explique-t-il. Ici, c’est le centre-ville, il y a le tourisme, le transport en commun qui vient de l’Ouest, il y a une centralité.»

Il dit d’ailleurs assumer pleinement ce choix. «Je ne suis pas un gars à regarder par en arrière, clamet-il. (…) Si tu prends trop de temps à regarder dans le rétroviseur, le monde te passe à côté.»

D’ailleurs, le magasin de Gatineau récolte un bon succès depuis son ouverture, confirme le président-directeur-général de l’entreprise, évoquant du même coup les beaux moments vécus lors de Le PDG de Simons, Peter Simons, a ouvert l’ouverture en août dernier. «C’est un moment les portes du chantier aux médias, lundi mémorable de ma carrière. Taquinez le poisson au 8e camp de pêche de la CNS pour les jeunes

CORNWALL, Ontario - L’aire de conservation Cass Bridge, à Winchester, sera le site du 8ième camp annuel de pêche gratuit de la Conservation de la Nation Sud (CNS) pour les jeunes du 6 au 7 juillet. « Cass Bridge située le long de la Nation Sud, est un véritable coin de pêche classique, » a déclaré Holly Nyenkamp, Aide - Communications.

Toutefois, participants âgés de 10 à 15 ans devront être alertes. À l’aide d’attirail de pêche fourni par la CNS, ils apprendront les règles de la pêche,

les meilleurs endroits où pêcher, comment choisir leur équipement et les appâts, y compris le montage des mouches, et le lancer.

Pendant le camp de deux jours, Les membres du Ottawa Flyfishers Society seront présents pour enseigner les participants la pêche à mouche.

Les inscriptions pour le camp de pêche de remise à l’eau seront acceptées sur la base du premier arrivé, premier servi. Un lunch sera servi pendant les deux jours. Les participants doivent

apporter leurs gilets de sauvetage et le camp se déroulera de 9 h à 15 h.

Le camp de pêche est présenté dans le cadre de la semaine de pêche en famille qui aura lieu du 2 au 10 juillet alors que la pêche avec remise à l’eau sans permis est autorisée. « Il n’y a pas de frais d’inscriptions pour s’inscrire et aucune condition préalable pour participer au camp. Les jeunes pêcheurs doivent simplement témoigner du respect et de l’enthousiasme pour la nature » a expliqué Mme Nyenkamp.

The Cornwall Seniors’ Bridge Club is hosting an event on the longest day of the year, Trump Alzheimer’s Contré , on Monday, June 20th at the Benson Centre. The event will include four bridge sessions: the Breakfast Session from 6:30 am to 8 am, the Morning Session from 8:30am to 11:30am, the Afternoon Session from 1 to 4 pm, and the Evening Session from 6 pm to 7 pm. The event will also include lunch with special guest speakers from noon to 1 pm. Sessions are $5 each and participants can also show their support by collecting pledges or donating $20 or more for the cause, which will allow participants to play as many sessions as they like.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Boys & Girls Club of Cornwall/SDG is hosting its eighth annual charity golf tournament on July 8.

Tim Hortons Scramble Fore Success is more than just a regular golf tournament, it also benefits the youth of Cornwall. Money raised from this yearly event goes directly into funding programs like “The Club” for youth between 12 and 18 years old who are generally overlooked when it comes to funding.

The Club is designed to engage youth from Grades 7-12 and provide a safe supportive place

where youth can explore interests, learn new skills, and build new friendships. Youth of Cornwall and area can participate in activities like cooking, homework help and longboarding. Volunteer opportunities and leadership skill training are also made available for youth members.

Returning this year is tournament VIP, Jesse Winchester of the Colorado Avalanche. Jesse is a great supporter of the Boys & Girls Club, and has been in our tournament since its inception.

Councillor, radio host facing off at ‘Boxing for Change’ 2017 CORNWALL, Ont. – Cue the Rocky theme music – the grueling training schedule has begun.

Cornwall Coun. David Murphy is preparing to step into the ring with Boom 101.9 host Dan Allaire at the annual ‘Boxing for Change’ fundraising event at the Nav Centre in May 2017.

Proceeds will benefit the Children’s Treatment Center and Champs East Side Boxing Club.

As the long-time friends and colleagues exchange punches during three two-minute rounds, Cornwall pro boxer Tony ‘Lightning’ Luis will be special guest referee. “I’ve been wanting to punch Murph in the face for 20 years,” joked Allaire.

To which Murphy replied: “Now he’s going to get to do it for charity.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – Local law enforcement have secured contact with as many as 1,000 local residents on the St. Lawrence River shoreline, who it is hoped can provide solid intelligence as police continue to battle smuggling.

This week Royal Canadian Mounted Police members with the Cornwall detachment joined with about 15 other law enforcement agencies and went directly to the people, knocking on the doors of about 2,000 homes to speak with residents about the smuggling problem in this region.

RCMP Const. Jean Juneau said contact was made with about 1,000 individuals and he added those new relationships are likely to pay dividends down the road.

“It’s important for us to meet with them and establish that rapport,” said Juneau. “We are more and more effective when we have that intelligence coming in.

“What we need to achieve with the community is to secure that border. We need to make sure and demonstrate to organized crime the community does not want this type of activity here or anywhere.”

The goal of this so-called “surge operation” was also to provide insight to residents on the importance of border security.

“Great collaborative effort has been made with all our local Canadian and U.S. law enforcement partners in planning for this initiative,” said Insp.

Steve Ethier, officer in charge of the Cornwall Regional Task Force. “We work together daily in our law enforcement efforts in securing a safe Canada. These two days… assist us all in highlighting what we do on a daily basis on a more elevated scale.”

Juneau said while the smuggling problem has evolved over time, police have tried to adapt as well.

“It’s not like it used to be in the early 90s - not at all,” he said. “But at the same time it has not stopped. We don’t have the same quantities going, but it hasn’t stopped.

“We ae very diligent about patrolling up and down (the river). But if I am in the Lancaster area and something is happening in Glen Walter I have missed it. That’s why it is important for the public to be involved…the information they will give us will provide the investigators with useful (knowledge).”

Law enforcement partners plan to complete a similar surge again.

I have friends from Hungary, Czechoslovakia, Germany and Italy who had to start over when they fled oppression, persecution or poverty. I know of others who have endured a failure in their business, or being laid off when their employer of 30 years decided to pull the plug on its paper mill. Many others had to start over because their homes, farms and businesses were expropriated for The Seaway

I can empathize with them, because I’ve had several ‘start-overs’ in my life. After spending less than a week in grade one, I had to start over a year later, as I had virtually no English language skills. However, the next year I did reasonably well. Then, in grade two I was on a roll: I did grade two and three in that year.

My next starting over experience came in Grade XIII. I was soon well over my head in algebra, trigonometry, Latin, chemistry and biology.

I dropped part of my overload of courses to return the next year – and eventually managed to squeak through.

After five years of teaching, I decided to start on my university degree. A mandatory introductory math course confronted me. I dropped out before it would have been recorded as a fail. The following year, I started the course over. This time a new girlfriend did not teach me how to do the math, but she did coach me how to pass the exam the second time around.

I courted several charming ladies, but for various reasons, no marriage resulted. Finally, a marriage did take place. Officially, it lasted 31 years. It was good while it lasted, but it did not last. Last year, I got married again. If my second marriage lasts as long as the first, I’ll be quite

hat better way to recognize May as Community Living month in Ontario, than by gathering together to recognize and honour people from our community who have made a positive impact in the lives of people who have an intellectual disability as supporters of an inclusive community.

It was Bernadette Clément’s (City Councillor and Deputy Director of the Legal Clinic) 10th year emceeing this event. She, along with Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy who also attended, showed their ongoing support in CLSC`s belief of a community where everyone belongs, as heartfelt success stories were shared.

Recipients of the 2016 Annual Community Appreciation Awards were presented to Audrey Moores, a volunteer with CLSC’s 6824234

The program includes swimming, canoeing, sports, crafts and campfire fellowship. Staff includes director, cabin leaders, qualified waterfront staff and qualified first aid.

Camp Kagama is located on Morrison Island, West of Ingleside, Ontario.
