CORNWALL, Ontario - City council wants no part of a $2.4-million project to redesign the courtyard at the Justice Building on Pitt Street.

Councillors slammed the door on agreeing in principle to spend money on the project that would see vast renovations made to the courtyard that is in need of repair in many cases.

Councillors conceded the repair work is one thing, which is measured in tens of thousands, but the millions that have been estimated for the full-blown project are not palatable right now.

“I think this project is at the wrong time…we have other issues,” said Coun. David Murphy, who listed a litany of projects like Point Maligne, soccer fields and a skateboard park among others that should be tackled first. “This is a nice-tohave. There are some need-to-haves for the

community.

“If we’re going to spend the money, spend it on separate projects.”

Coun. Denis Carr, though, was not impressed with such a suggestion.

“Admittedly the designs we have looked at are very appealing,” he said, but suggested federal infrastructure funding is likely on the way. “If we want to keep attracting people to our community you have to keep making improvements.

In a motion debated Monday night Towndale and Murphy point out that all tender bid documentation released by the city hall contains the clause: “The corporation reserves the right to reject any and all bids, waive informalities and to contract in the best interests of the city.”

They believe such a clause opens the door to allow the city to go with local bids first when it comes to proposal requests, so long as it makes economic sense and follows the specifications of demands issued by city hall.

Councillors Carilyne Hebert and Bernadette Clement suggested the city could even follow Thunder Bay’s move and consider tenders and requests from companies with an environmental bend to leave a smaller municipal carbon footprint.

The report, which will return to city council in the coming weeks, will also include a legal opinion on whether such a move is possible.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A pair of city councillors were successful Monday night in convincing their colleagues to examine a move that will allow local firms to win municipal contracts, even if they aren’t the lowest bidder.

Councillors David Murphy and Justin Towndale are the proponents of succssful motion that will see administrators prepare a report on the ramifications of giving preference

to Cornwall companies so long as they are within five per cent of the lowest bid.

“If there’s an opportunity to give local companies an edge, we should explore it,” Towndale said in an interview. “I’ve heard from some local companies about this.”

Indeed this is not the first time the issue has cropped up, as the city has faced criticism in the past for going with outside firms because they may have a low bid, and many local business owners feel city hall should support companies within Cornwall and area.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Doing a girlís hair is something most men have no experience with Julien Bray no longer falls into that category. The North Stormont father learned styling tricks at downtown Cornwall’s Kings & Little Ones’ inaugural ‘Daddy-Daughter Hair Survival Class’ on Sunday (Jan. 24). “It was important to come down (from Berwick) because I have three daughters.

Before all I knew was a simple ponytail - and I sucked at it. Now I can do multiple things,” said Bray as he brushed the bangs of his four-year-old daughter Abigail. The workshop raised about $900 for a march break camp for girls hosted by Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) for Women of Stormont-Dundas-Glengarry & Akwesasne.

“The funds raised will send area youth and teens to a week-long camp. And this year, we’re having two groups,” said Angela Vinet, executive director of SASS of SDG&A. Josh Casselman opened Kings & Little Ones in August 2015 to offer a new barbershop experience. But a girlie gathering cut the usual mancave atmosphere short since the store is now closed on Sundays. Instead of hot towel shaves and beard trims, a group of local fathers learned to tame their daughter’s tangles in support of women survivors of sexual violence. Two dozen dads transformed their daughter’s long, flowing locks into an easy to do ballerina bun. “It made sense to participate,” said Casselman. “It’s promoting the type of dad we want to see in here: a guy’s guy who is manly enough to do his daughter’s hair.” The class also taught the proper way to

take a hair elastic out, how often to wash a girl’s hair, and how to brush hair loaded with tangles.

“It’s nice to spend time with our daughters as a group and get interactive,” said Jason McAlear as he brushed his seven-year-old Addison’s hair.

“I defintely learned a few things. Plus it’s for charity.” Vinet says the daddy-daughter bonding gets to the root of the event’s goal. “I wanted to get men involved with SASS in a positive way, and I thought what better way than spending time with their daughters and doing their hair,” said Vinet. “Since Kings & Little Ones is a male shop it’s a great blend. And the response has been great.”

Shago told Seaway News the demand for the class is so high another date has been added in February. It sold out immediately. A third edition is being scheduled.

MAN-FREE ZONE: Baldwin House fundraiser returns on Feb. 6 daughters’ clothes as they grow out of them to Baldwin House in COrnwall. Girls Night Out originated from a house party in 2010.

The popular event, which originated from a house party in 2010, raised $5,613 last year, compared to $4,210 in 2014. “Girls Night Out started as a way to get money for Christmas gifts for kids at the women’s shelter,” said Lamarche.

The fancy fundraiser will feature a spaghetti supper with buns, salad, dessert, and coffee; a black and pink party theme; over a dozen singers; 25 exhibitors; numerous door prizes, and a 50/50 draw, silent auction and Chinese auction.

“The evening will start with what girls love to do: shopping,” said Lamarche.

Local entrepreneurs will be selling various items on site, including jewelry, sweets, clothing, purses, make-up, and oils.

“We invite single, married, and business women of all ages - bring your mother, sister, or daughter, and join us,” she said. The only male allowed on the premise: RenÈ St.John.

“My friend and our chef,” said Lamarche.

After supper, local DJ‘TLC’Natalie Durocher will supply the tunes as special karaoke guest singers grab the mic and guests dance the night away.

Singers include: Rose Cameron, Lise Champagne, Cathy Doyle-Parent, Diane Lalonde-Boyer, Jovie Ruest, Anne Marie Lalonde, Alison Hudson, Karen Tyo, and Jessica Froats.

Wanzer noted the community’s generosity when it comes to sponsorship.

“The Cornwall area has really stepped up for this event over the years,” she said.

CORNWALL, Ontario - There’s only one problem with ticket prices for the annual Italian Night fundraiser - the cause is so worthy, the price should be higher.

“They should charge more than $25.

Everyone has such a great time, they would still come out and support it,” said Gabrielle Williamson at the MS Society of Cornwall & District event on Friday (Jan. 15).

Italian Night featured volunteer servers sporting the latest in mafioso apparel manning a larger-than-life buffet and live entertainment provided by the Kealey-Greer All Star Band.

The event typically collects about $5,000.

The final tally hasn’t been released.

For five years, her family has reunited at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch #297 building in Cornwall for Italian Night.

“It’s becoming a tradition,” said Williamson.

Some travelled from the Ottawa area, others as far as Kemptville. A few arrived three hours early to get the perfect spot. And one relative celebrated a birthday, as showcased by the group’s colourful masquerade masks and party decorations in the standing-room only crowd of over 300 people (another sold-out edition).

“We enjoy this event so much, especially since it helps support the community,” she said.

TRANSPLANT TRIALS Kim MacLennan can remember standing in line at the license bureau, like we’ve all done, and recalls the clerk behind the counter asking a person about signing up for organ donation.

“The woman said ‘Do you want to participate in the donor program?’ and the customer said ‘I don’t see any use for that,’” recalls MacLennan. “I wanted so badly to say ‘I’m a use for that.’”

Indeed.

MacLennan, nearly two years ago, was the recipient of a liver transplant that saved her life. A massive cyst had taken over her liver and a life-saving surgical procedure saw the organ removed and replaced.

But like so many transplant patients, her story didn’t end there. Not by a longshot.

A Cornwall man may have believed he had committed the perfect crime by getting away with it - but police finally caught up with him.

The man is alleged to have stolen property from a Ninth Street store on Jan. 16, but it wasn’t until Jan. 25 when a Cornwall police officer spotted him walking in the neighbourhood of Third and Pitt streets that he was arrested.

Brandon Tessier, 29 of Cornwall was charged with theft under $5,000 and three counts of breach of probation for failing to keep the peace.

He was taken into custody and released to appear in court on March 1.

NEW INSPECTION SIGNS The Eastern Ontario Health Unit is rolling out the next phase of its restaurant inspection disclosure system.

The system will require restaurant owners to hang a sign in their premises which alerts diners to whether or not they have met safe foodhandling requirements, among other issues.

To increase the visibility of inspection reports, the EOHU has started distributing coloured signs to restaurants for public display.

The coloured signs indicate at a glance whether a restaurant or grocery store has received a “pass” (green sign), “conditional pass” (yellow sign) or “closed” (red sign) inspection report.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Mickey Woods is, at this moment, languishing in a U.S. prison.

His Cornwall family is working hard behind the scenes so that one day, maybe not anytime soon but some day, Woods will be free.

To be fair, there are some who say Woods got what he deserved. He was sentenced to life in a U.S. prison for his part as one of the major players – if not the main man himself – in a $47-million marijuana smuggling operation that resulted in RCMP-led arrests in 2012.

Woods was one of 15 Canadian extradited to the U.S. for smuggling the marijuana from 2005 to 2008 with reportedly as much as 10,000 kg of pot moved through Akwesasne to various American cities. His partner, Cornwallite Gaetan Dinelle, also received a life sentence.

His son Dylan said in an interview with Seaway News Woods is not disputing his conviction – just the sentence.

Last week Woods was handed life in a U.S. prison, part of a conviction for smuggling and being part of a continuing criminal enterprise.

“My dad’s main goal is to come back to Canada,” said Dylan. “They’re making an example out of him.”

Dylan alleges prosecutors in the U.S. are being tough with Woods because he is not prepared to co-operate and “rat” on others.

“He’s willing to do the time, but life in jail is unjust,” said Dylan. “Because my dad won’t rat, they’re giving him life.”

There has been a muted rallying cry for Woods’ eventual release. A Facebook page created to convey material to the public concerning the case has been set up by the Woods family. Last weekend a local Internet radio show featured an interview with Woods from prison where he pleaded his case for release and some social media posts have called for his release.

But others are having none of it and think Woods is getting what was coming to him.

Dylan said his father is trying to grapple with

his new reality.

“He never gives up hope. He’s motivated.

He’s not sad – well, probably but he won’t show it,” said Dylan, who plans to contact local MP Guy Lauzon and senior members of the federal government about seeking a return to Canada for his father.

Dylan has also been in contact with Canada’s Marc Emery, the so-called ‘Prince of Pot’ and cannabis activist who has been jailed several times, most notably in 2009 when he served a five-year sentence in a United States federal prison for selling mail-order cannabis seeds in that country.

“He was giving me advice for my father,” said Dylan. “He told me to tell my dad to get into hobbies to pass the time.”

Dylan said his father is in the midst of a transfer to a Brooklyn, N.Y. maximum security prison, before he finally lands at a Pennsylvania institution. Woods plans to apply for yet another transfer, later this year, to a prison in Ray Brook, N.Y. just south of Saranac Lake, N.Y.

Instead of a seven-hour drive to Pennsylvania Woods’ family would be driving 90 minutes to visit.

In the meantime Dylan said his family is working every angle it can to see him returned to Canada to finish out a sentence and eventually be released.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The prosecutor in the Mickey Woods smuggling case said the Cornwall man who now faces life in prison had an opportunity for an earlier release, but turned it down.

Carl Eurenius said in an interview with Seaway News Thursday Woods could have received 20 years, and perhaps as little as 17 years, had he chosen to plead guilty.

With time served the prosecutor said he could have been out in a little more than 10 years, had he chosen to plead guilty and accept

the plea deal.

Instead he got life, and now Woods’ family is suggesting that the Cornwall man who played a huge role in a $47-million international smuggling operation was pressured to “rat” on others in order to receive a lighter sentence.

Eurenius is having none of it.

“That’s 100 per cent false,” he said.

Eurenius went on to point out that the judge in the case actually stopped the proceedings at one point and ordered the jury out of the room while the plea offerings were read into the record.

Both Woods and Gaetan Dinelle, another

Cornwall man facing a similar fate in the case, were asked if they understood the plea offerings.

“The actual plea offers were put on the record,” said Eurenius. “The pleas were not dependent on co-operation.

“There’s no way that would have been misunderstood.”

In fact Eurenius suggested many of those who may have been implicated in any co-operation by Woods or Dinelle had already admitted their role or been otherwise corralled by law enforcement.

“Defendants in these situations who take

their chances at trial come up with all kinds of suggestions,” said Eurenius, pointing to accusations made by Woods’ family that because he would not co-operate he is being made an example of.

Woods’ sentence also covers a charge of operating a continuing criminal enterprise, which comes with it an automatic life sentence.

Eurenius said unlike the Canadian legal system, a life sentence in the U.S. in this case means exactly that - there will be no release unless Woods finds some kind of solace via the appellate system.

CORNWALL, Ontario - More than $1.3 million worth of new buses should be on the road in Cornwall.

On top of the two new Handi Transit buses that arrived in the Seaway City last autumn (both worth $190,000), a pair of full-sized conventional buses (clocking in at $466,000 apiece) were delivered over the Christmas break.

Transit manager Len Tapp said in an interview the Handi Transit machines have already been on the road for weeks, while the conventional buses were believed to be road-ready by Jan. 15 or so.

The conventional buses, still a sparkling white from the Quebec manufacturer, had to be lettered and have equipment installed before they could be filled with passengers.

In the meantime a pair of aging buses - one is a 1998, and the other began its career way back in 1985 - will be retired.

“They’re not in service right now, but they will be sold off,” said Tapp.

Before the new buses arrived Cornwall’s fleet had an average age of about 13 years, but with the new machines now ready for work that number has dropped to 10.

Other numbers are dropping too, though, at Cornwall Transit. Tapp said ridership dipped by about 2.4 per cent in 2015, over the previous year.

Tapp attributed the decrease to lower gas prices, which meant riders that would normally take the bus likely jumped in the car instead.

“That’s something that has been seen industry-wide,” said Tapp.

While specific numbers for 2015 haven’t been finalized, Tapp suggested about 810,000 people rode the bus, Handi Transit or otherwise, last year.

The new conventional buses that will hit the road can accommodate nearly 60 passengers, with space for 38 seats and about 20 spaces for standing.

“School staff will be participating in professional development activities as mandated by the Ministry of Education,” the UCDSB stated on its website Thursday (Jan. 21).

The school boards are asking parents to get in touch with their local school for further details.

“The CDSBEO has added the day as a result of the recent labour deals reached with teachers, after talks this summer,” the board stated on its website Wednesday (Jan. 20).

CORNWALL, Ontario - When Cornwall native John Robinson first set foot in a courtroom to take part in a case he fell back on the one thing he knew intimately - acting.

Robinson has been cast in several roles on the stage, TV and the silver screen, so when he made the transition to a career as a paralegal, performing before a judge seemed almost second nature.

“I didn’t know what I was doing. I’m not kidding,” said Robinson, who has actually become quite successful in the courtroom despite his modest beginning. “You have to make (the judge) feel like you do know.

“Imagine being on the stage in front of 2,000 people and you forget your lines. Your mind is racing so fast.

“You develop a skill at being able to still convey an idea through the silence.”

Robinson has parlayed his acting experience into a law career that now has its home base in

Cornwall after years spent practicing in Toronto.

A CCVS graduate who was bitten by the acting bug while studying at the University of Toronto, Robinson has rubbed shoulders with industry leaders in the same circles as some of Hollywood’s elite.

He had one of the few speaking roles in Oscar Wilde’s play Salomé, which starred Al Pacino. He played Federal Agent Patterson in the movie ‘Casino Jack’ which starred Kevin Spacey and most recently was cast as a detective in the Discovery Channel’s new series ‘Real Detectives.’

“They went through 127 criminal cases and chose eight to run stories around,” said Robinson, adding the actual detectives who investigated the crimes narrate the show while actors perform scenes.

Robinson said his particular episode is slated to run on the Discovery Channel on Feb. 18.

And that’s not all.

“I just read for a part on Quantico yesterday,” he said matter-of-factly, referring to the hit ABC thriller that is shot mainly in Montreal. “I’ve read

for it seven times.”

He’s hoping to get a call back.

Making the trip to places like Montreal for auditions will be easier now. While he lived in Toronto for years, Robinson made the decision to move back to Cornwall when a family illness resulted in a search for a support system with deep roots. He moved to the Seaway City last summer.

He lives here now with his wife Paula and daughter Anne. Two of his stepsons still live in the provincial capital. Robinson lives on Adolphus Street, a stone’s throw from where he grew up on First Street.

Things are expected to get worse later this year when a new asset management plan returns to city hall that details the amount of money that should be spent to keep its buildings from crumbling.

“That may be quite shocking when that’s done about how much we should be spending on capital to maintain our buildings,” said the mayor.

There have already been some calls for cuts to the 2016 draft budget, with critics suggesting greater tax savings can be found for ratepayers.

O’Shaughnessy is leery of promising more cuts.

“We’d all like our electricity bills to go down and our insurance rates to go down,” he said.

“But we have to understand cost of living increases, or more, are going to become a norm.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - City hall is setting itself up to pass municipal budgets ahead of schedule.

Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy said municipal bean counters are working on a plan to get the 2017 budget wrapped up this December.

The same schedule would follow in years to come as the city aims to start Jan. 1 with a budget already completed.

Typically the city waits until well into January to begin deliberations on a particular budget, with approval coming weeks if not months later in some extreme cases.

“It’s to gain efficiencies, but it also frees up council to do more forecasting,” said O’Shaughnessy, who characterized the current budget schedule as a “crunch” to get the document finalized in the same year in which the money is being spent. “You can identify problems and mitigate those problems.”

It means that in the 2016 calendar year two budgets will be passed, the one for this year, and another for 2017.

O’Shaughnessy was unconcerned about tasking administrators with producing two budget documents with a tighter turnaround.

“There’s an abundance of time,” he said, suggesting bean counters will get to work alongside a new city council budget committee that will be struck in June to complete the 2017 budget. “It’s something that’s been always talked about and never done…we’re going to try and do it.”

But before the city gets there it must complete the 2016 budget. Meeting dates have been set aside for the first week in February and O’Shaughnessy is hopeful about seeing the budget wrapped up by March 1.

While the draft budget document comes with a 1.95 per cent tax hike for a typical residential property, O’Shaughnessy is not predicting a situation where councillors slash that number down further, perhaps flirting with a tax freeze.

“And that’s mainly because of the amount of money we have to spend on capital,” he said.

“We have $700,000 worth of new capital spending in the budget.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - A protest calling for the closure of the Gveah Pet Store was held outside the Cornwall Square Saturday (Jan. 23) Years of allegations, both online and offline, boiled to the surface as over a dozen people rallied near Horovitz Park, escaping cold winds in a city transit bus shelter, across from the downtown shopping centre’s parking lot.

Some protesters standing on the side of Sydney Street waved placards reading slogans such as “Animals Suffer For Greed & Profit!”“SHUT IT DOWN,” and “Honk if you love pussy cats!”

“Everyone has been scared to say something, and I think we need people to stand up,” said Samantha Patenaude, who co-organized the protest rally with Katherine Reddon and another Cornwall woman who was unable to attend.

Patenaude and Reddon say they want the SD&G SPCA to step in and shut down the store.

“Pets dying is not a part of the business,” said Gary Kharmandarian, owner of the Gveah Pet Store and the neighbouring Cornwall Square Shoe Repair & Cordonnerie, since 1995.

On Saturday (Jan. 23), pet store patron Eric Sypes was picking up food for the lizards he previously purchased there. A few days earlier he purchased a kitten for $60 at the store for his child.

“I’d love to see them (protesters). I have a few things to say,” said Sypes, noting that the rally got off to a late start. “All my animals are perfectly healthy. If there was such a problem I wouldn’t buy from here. People need to take their animals to the vet after.”

The group of protesters noted that store signage barring cameras and cell phones is “suspicious.”

“Can you imagine you’re in a cage and people come snapping their cameras in your face? I don’t want my animals to be stressed,” said Kharmandarian. “If you want to go to the zoo, go!”

He says there’s been a local campaign of harassment since he re-opened the pet shop about two and a half years ago.

Protesters Leah Fitzpatrick and Monique Brunet said that isnít the case.

Fitpatrick says she purchased an eight-week old kitten and pet food from the store around Christmas. But after a visit to the veterinarian four days later for shots, she was told the new pet was actually barely a month old and needed to be put on food replacement formula.

Fitzpatrick attempted to return the food she was allegedly encouraged to buy back to the store, but to no avail.

“He actually kicked me out of the store, because I was being negative. I didn’t see the 48-hour return policy sign above the cash register at first, but he could’ve offered an exchange on the food, something to sympathize,” said Fitzpatrick. “And why did he tell me the cat was eight weeks old, when she fit in the palm of my hand?”

Fitzpatrick says the kitten died 12 days after she was purchased.

Reddon questioned why the store has a strict two-day return policy, when other establishments offer up to 15 days.

Meanwhile, Brunet said her daughter recently purchased two kittens from the store, and one passed away shortly after. The family’s beloved five-year-old cat also suddenly died a short time

“One kitten came with fleas, worms and a virus, but we paid for the vet,” said Brunet. “I’m very upset and want them closed down, because these animals don’t deserve this.”

The protest and the allegations of neglect both originated from social media.

In March 2014, a Facebook page was created named ‘Boycott “The Pet Store” at the Cornwall Square shopping center.’

Numerous wall posts from the page’s 1,800plus followers allege animals, including dogs, cats, and guinea pigs, have been grossly mistreated and left in unsanitary living conditions.

On Jan. 15, a Facebook user posted that the kitten she purchased from the mall store died shortly after on Christmas night.

The post ended with: “I visited the owner on Boxing Day and he refused to give me my $60.00 back and blamed me for her death, saying she must’ve gotten a disease or something on my way home from the pet store and basically laughed in my face. I advise everyone to boycott this location, horrible people and customer service.”

Sypes says the Faceook page administrator is constantly deleting favourable reviews posted by him and others.

“All the positive comments gets deleted,” he said. “People who haven’t even been in the store are judging him. That’s not fair. One reason this all started is that people are jealous. The prices are cheaper than other pet stores. He gives deals.”

“We are responsible for animals for 48 hours and there’s no cash refund, as it says on the sign,” said Kharmandarian. “If you come 10 days after to return a sick cat, where have you been all this time? Of course I’m going to be aggressive. I’m a hard-working guy. I’m here every morning cleaning up my store.”

An online petition was started under the named Melissa Poncia, calling for the shop’s closure. The petition reached 2,557 signatures before it was closed. The first line of the description reads: “There have been countless cases of sick, dying and/or mistreated animals bought from this pet store in particular.”

Another petition was created on change.org, also calling for authorities to shut down the shop.

The petition has reached 1,779 signatures.

“Everyone walks in the store and they love it.

I can give you 50 numbers,” said Kharmandarian.

“But if you come in, and the hamster’s sleeping, and you think it’s dead so you knock on the window...I will ask, ‘Can I help you?’ Because you’re only here to start a problem.

“It’s not an attitude. I’m a tough love guy.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Local MPP Jim McDonell wants drivers who have had their license suspended for medical reasons reinstated quicker once a doctor approves of their return to the road.

McDonell said Friday he is responding to numerous complaints from constituents against the Ministry of Transportation’s (MTO) medical review delays.

He is launching a petition to impose a reasonable service guarantee for Ontario drivers waiting to be re-instated.

“A license is suspended immediately upon the ministry being notified that someone’s condition may make them an unsafe driver,” he said.

“That part of the process is a reasonable public safety measure. Once a doctor clears the patient to drive again, however, the ministry lets the file sit on a desk for 30 business days before reinstating the license.

“This makes no sense. MTO’s diligence in suspending the license should be matched by an

equal commitment to setting things right.”

License suspensions for medical reasons affect regular and commercial drivers without the possibility of temporary respite. There is no process by which a complete application for reinstatement may be expedited, despite a physician’s positive medical recommendation.

“Thirty business days of inactivity can kill a business reliant on the owners’ and employees’ ability to drive,” McDonell said. “In our region owning and operating a vehicle isn’t an option – it’s essential to carry out daily activities such as working, shopping and getting to medical appointments.

“The delay in reviewing complete re-instatement applications is entirely artificial. It has no basis in law, regulation or public policy, and it must go.”

The petition can be signed at MPP McDonell’s constituency office at 120 Second St. West in Cornwall, or downloaded from www. jimmcdonellmpp.ca/petitions and mailed to the office. Only original signatures are accepted by the legislature.

The first-ever little brother, who was paired with Wilf Tyo, is the honourary chair of the 2016 Tim Hortons Bowl for Kids Sake.

“I want to make sure this is the best (event) they’ve had,” said Graham. “I’ve lived the benefits of the program.

The 38th Tim Hortons Bowl for Kids Sake will take place Feb. 6 in Cornwall and Feb. 7 in Chesterville and will bring together more than 1,200 bowlers from the community to support children and youth in need. Participants from the community are invited to put together teams of four to six bowlers and collect pledges to support Big Brothers Big/Sisters’ seven free mentoring programs.

“Hitting our goal of $70,000 this year will allow us to continue to serve over 400 children

in a mentoring program throughout SD&G,” said BBBS executive director Amanda Brisson.

Tim Hortons Bowl for Kids Sake has been a familiar community fundraiser, providing a large bulk of the funds for youth mentoring programs offered by Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall and District.

For good or ill, we should have a debate concering OPP in Cornwall Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

If the city wants to save money in a hurry some believe there’s one way to accomplish it – open the door to the OPP. Our municipal cousins in Brockville are examining the issue, and debate is expected to resume in that city this year after a provincial moratorium on OPP costings was lifted in late 2015. The move to replace Brockville’s 183-year-old municipal force focuses a great deal on economics and has been booted around since 2012.

In that time the Brockville force has worked to trim its costs – but not enough to silence the debate. It’s believed Brockville will find out this spring just how much it will cost to go with the OPP instead of a municipal force.

Just this week Brockville Mayor David Henderson was in Cornwall and met with Cornwall Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy. What exactly was on their agenda is anyone’s guess, but it’s hard to believe the OPP costing didn’t come up at all.

A little birdy tells me the topic continued to float around city hall following Monday night’s council meeting.

Could it happen? Should it happen?

Some straight-up mathematics would suggest Cornwall needs to at least have the discussion. The 2016 Cornwall service budget rings in at about $18.1 million, to police about 47,000 people.

Now, I realize we’re not comparing apples to

apples, but our friends in the United Counties have a police budget of just $10 million – and a population base of somewhere around 65,000 that is quite admirably served by the OPP. I don’t have enough knowledge of the subject to advocate a position – not yet, anyway – but with numbers like that, and with so much being made about how much protective services like police, fire and EMS cost the tax base, perhaps now is the time to explore the idea a little further.

At the very least it might put to rest any arguments to have the OPP patrol city streets, if we find out the feasibility of such a move is too great.

A couple of weeks ago Coun. Mark MacDonald told my buddy Bill Kingston over at Cornwall Newswatch that he’d be interested in finding out how much we could save by going with OPP or otherwise sharing services with the United Counties.

But when I spoke with him Tuesday, he said he isn’t prepared to put a motion forward to find out how much we’ll save by going with OPP. “I think it’s something we’re going to have the police board and our police chief look into,” he said.

“We’ve got the right guy at the right time to help us with that and that’s chief (Dan) Parkinson.”

I’m not sure the police chief would be interested in undertaking a process that could result in the dismantling of his service. Ditto the police services board.

SENATOR CLEMENT? Rumours abound concerning the political

future of Coun. Bernadette Clement. The veteran of nearly 10 years at the city council table ran, and lost, in the most recent federal election while carrying the Liberal banner. It was her second kick at the federal can.

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau is being urged to create a gender-balanced senate, and is believed to have personally used his influence to persuade Clement to run in last year’s election.

I’ve suggested previously that she’s due to receive something for her service to the party, and perhaps a senate seat is just that. She’d do a heck of a job. Clement is well-spoken, a political veteran and has aspirations beyond 360 Pitt Street.

If she doesn’t get a senate appointment, I’d be kinda shocked.

MERCURY FALLING

More terrible news on the print-media landscape, as the Guelph Mercury announced this week it would end its print edition by Friday.

The newspaper is owned by Metroland, and pointed to dwindling classified and national ad revenue as reasons to go solely with a web-based product.

We’re fortunate to be insulated from such pressures at Seaway News. Our website is humming along quite nicely, and our revenue streams are rock solid – be it in print or online.

The Merc’s motto is “intensely local” (a phrase stolen by a website operator) and in 1950, it committed to putting 25 stories and 75 local names in every issue.

A great idea…too bad it could not stand the test of time.

Euthanasia murders the last remaining life out of the infirmed (and often unwanted and unproductive) suffering sinners – just what the Devil wanted!

He also served as school principal and his office was adjacent to the classroom. Two Cornwall residents who used enormous profits generated by a cross-border pot smuggling operation to live the good life today face the prospect of never again seeing the outside world. Instead they wear a U.S. prison jump suit and live in an ungarnished six-by-eight cell.

Mickey Woods, 45, and Gates Dinelle, 42, were handed mandatory life sentences in a Syracuse, N.Y. federal court.

That is life as in rest of your life. No chance of parole. No get out of jail card.

In the blunt, cold words of a U.S. law enforcement official, each will take his last breath in a U.S. prison, be it 10 years or 50 years from now.

Short of the electric chair, gas chamber or the IV needle, it doesn’t get any harsher. In many cases, outside the federal system, sentences of 20 (years) to life for murder leave open the parole door.

Considering the life sentence, this isn’t a big worry for the duo but the court also ordered a $45-million (U.S.) judgment against them. You can’t pay that off on prison wages.

In Canada, throwing the proverbial book at somebody convicted of running a multi-million dollar pot smuggling operation might result in a 10-year, out-in-five sentence.

The two Cornwall men (that should read former Cornwall men) were given the opportunity to escape the shackles of mandatory life sentences. All they had to do was save the cost of a trial by pleading guilty. Incredibly, despite the preponderance of evidence stacked against them,

they turned down the offer, took their chances with a jury trial and, as it turned out, threw away their lives. Bad move.

Oddly enough, any sliver of hope that someday they will be returned to Canada to serve out abbreviated sentences might ride on the fall presidential election.

If, and this is no longer a joke, Donald Trump is elected Republican president in November, foreigners serving time in the U.S. aren’t likely to catch a break on a mandatory life sentence for trucking tonnes of an illegal drug into the U.S. For the record, Trump, despite growing up in the drug-crazed Sixties, has never smoked anything legal or illegal. He is also a non-drinker. His sole addiction is making money. He is a Ronald Reagan anti-drug guy.

As harsh as the life sentences seem to folks on this side of the border, the fact is both men knew that this is what they would face if ever turned over to the Americans. They figured it would never happen and that they were operating in a safe zone. That the Americans would never get their hands on them. But it did happen. This wasn’t a spur-of-the-moment crime. It was well thought out criminal operation that ran for years and, according to evidence, brought in millions of dollars. It was one of the city’s worst kept secrets.

The fact is, for most law-abiding citizens who work hard to make a living, pay their taxes, put bread on the table and pay the rent, it is hard to feel much sympathy for two criminals who made more money in a year than they can earn

CORNWALL, Ontario - We always knew Alex Tourangeau was a star - but now it is confirmed.

The young Cornwall leukemia fighter was chosen along with two other young Ottawa area cancer patients for a photo shoot that will lead to his face being plastered on billboards and buses in the nation’s capital for the CN Cycle for CHEO event.

Last year the fundraiser collected more than $900,000 for the Children’s Hospital of Eastern Ontario.

“It’s a large marketing campaign they are working on,” said Alex’s mom Cheryl. “It’s a big deal - $900,000 is a big chunk of change.”

Alex was diagnosed in the summer of 2013

with leukemia. He and his parents have been making regular trips to Ottawa as a treatment regimen unfolds. It’s expected to take another nine months before treatments wrap up.

“He was really thrilled to get picked for this,” said Cheryl. “They go through a process to make sure the kids will be co-operative and they want to make sure they have kids who are stable enough in their treatments.

“Some kids and some families want to close the door on what is going on. But unfortunately with cancer you can’t ever really close the door.

It will always be a part of their life.”

CN Cycle for CHEO takes place every spring in Ottawa. This year it will go May 1 at the Canadian War Museum where participants will walk, run or cycle to raise money for the hospital, as well as Ronald McDonald House and Candlelighters.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Smugglers are using creative ways to avoid getting busted by the Cornwall Regional Task Force.

A 25-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on Dec. 20 at the Canada Border Service Agency (CBSA) port of entry in the City of Cornwall after officers found 171 cartons of contraband cigarettes inside a false compartment in the driver’s 2001 Dodge Ram truck.

Two Akwesasne men were also arrested at the POE on Dec. 29 after officers discovered that the box of their pickup truck was on hinges. Inside they found 350 cartons of contra-

SLC Sharks show teeth at Schooners Invitational CORNWALL, Ontario - The St. Lawrence College Cornwall Sharks men’s hockey team came out on top at the 13th annual Schooners Invitational tournament.

The Sharks entered the tournament ranked second overall in the province with an 8-0-1 record, having won gold at the George Brown College Invitational in October, and loosing in a shootout in the championship game at the Sheridan College Invitational.

“This was a really important performance for our club,” said Sharks coaches Sean Boulerice and Mike Pettinella.

“This tournament is very hard to win. It’s right after the holiday break and the teams are keen to get the new year started with a strong performance,” said Pettinella.

The Sharks now have an impressive 13-1-1 record and are back on the ice February 5 at the Conestoga College Invitational in Kitchener.

Game One vs SLC-Schooners: L 2-1 The Sharks suffered their first lost of the season, a 2-1 defeat against their SLC rival, the SLC-Schooners.

After a scoreless first period, the Schooners scored back-to-back goals just 2:30 minutes apart to take a confident 2-0 lead. Fortunately, Taylor Eamon would find the back of the net on a 2-on-1 break for the Sharks, just before the second period ended.

That would be as close as the Sharks would get, as they took a late penalty that voided a chance at a late game comeback.

Game Two vs La Cité: W 6-2 The goals came quickly and frequently against the La Cité Coyotes, as the Sharks jumped to a 3-0 lead after the first ten minutes of play, with goals coming from Joel Marleau

and Brandan Gilmour.

With the Sharks dictating the play through the second period, and the game still at 3-0, SLC added three more goals within a three-minute span to take a convincing 6-0 lead. SLC would allow two goals before the final buzzer, leading to 6-2 victory.

The win was an important rebound game for the Sharks after suffering their first loss of the season.

Game Three vs McMaster: W 6-4 SLC opened the game with three straight goals (all within a minute of each other) in the first period from Taylor Eamon, Brian Landry, and Brandan Gilmour. The quick start gave the Sharks all the momentum as the McMaster Marauders looked completely for the rest of the period.

Gilmour added another goal one minute into the second but McMaster answered with backto-back goals that breathed new life into the Marauders, taking away the strong momentum the Sharks built on a four goal lead that was quickly cut in half.

McMaster continued to set the pace until Matt Gregoire scored at the five-minute mark of the third period that allowed SLC to let out a brief sigh of relief, restoring the two goal lead.

After McMaster scored on the powerplay to come within one, the Sharks appeared to look nervous but Gilmour earned his hat-trick goal on an empty net goal that sealed the 6-4 victory.

After day one, the Sharks find themselves tied for first overall with the host Schooners.

The goal seemed to allow the Sharks to take more chances as it produced two more goals in the third period, on route to the 3-0 win.

Final vs SLC-Brockville: 3-1 SLC-Cornwall didn’t waste anytime getting the scoring started with Jesse Fontaine snipping the top corner just one minute into the game.

Right after the goal, both teams took a more

passive approach to the game, as they started to show some fatigue by playing their sixth game within two days.

Kurtis Mainse would find himself all alone infront of the Sharks net and made no mistake in tying the game for the Schooners at the sevenminute mark of the second period. Once the game was tied, the teams opened up the ice and began skating hard and taking risks to try and break the deadlock.

The game was still tied until Christian Leger sent an innocent shot on net that handcuffed the Schooners goalie with just three-minutes remaining in the game.

SLC-Brockville brought lots of pressure in the dying minutes but Justin Rutley would score on the empty net with seven seconds left that sealed the victory for the Sharks.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Tyson Spink is on the ballot for the Hobey Baker Award, given to the top player in American college hockey.

The Williamstown native is in his senior year at Colgate University in Hamilton, N.Y., and leads the team in scoring with 10 goals and 15 assists in 23 games.

And if the name sounds familar — it should.

Spinkís twin brother, Tylor, is second in scoring at Colgate, and their younger brother, Tanner, is the leading points producer for the Cornwall Colts.

Colgate University Raiders’ Tyson Spink has been selected to be on the fan ballot for the 2016 Hobey Baker Award, presented annually to the top Division I college hockey player.

A legendary American hero, Baker was a World War I fighter pilot and was known as America’s greatest amateur athlete in his day, excelling at hockey and football at Princeton University.

For the last 13 years, Dr. Pearl Campbell has served as director of Stem Core Laboratories at the Ottawa Hospital Research Institute.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Wilson and Boulerice families represent the longest standing family run funeral homes in Cornwall with over 100 years of combined existence.

Recently, Wilson Funeral Home acquired and began operation of Boulerice Funeral Home.

“The acquisition allows us to accommodate growth in our business,” says Allan Wilson, owner and funeral director of Wilson Funeral Home.

The Wilson and Boulerice families have always been friends in business. Boulerice Funeral Home was founded by the late Romeo Boulerice 61 years ago while the Wilson Funeral Home was founded by Ronald and Claire Wilson in 1976. Ron Wilson was successful in working with a number of the other funeral directors to change the way the industry operated in Ontario, and is highly regarded as a pioneer in the industry.

In the early 1980’s, Wilson and Boulerice had a vision to bring their businesses together.

Although the two business owners had serious talks, nothing came of the opportunity.

Ron and Romeo eventually handed over the reins of their business to their children. Allan Wilson and his wife Bonnie took over Wilson Funeral Home and Romeo’s daughter Adele

and her late husband Richard Bray took over the operation of Boulerice Funeral Home.

Like their parents, Allan and Adele were open to working together, and when it was time for Adele to retire, the idea of bringing the businesses together was renewed.

“We began talking over a year ago, and the focus was always about ensuring that our community is well served by local professionals,” says Wilson. “We look forward to maintaining the Boulerice name and tradition of excellence in Le Village.”

Wilson Funeral Home now becomes the only locally owned and operated funeral home in Cornwall. It has quietly grown to become one of the busiest independently operated funeral homes in Eastern Ontario, and is the chosen representative to the Chief Coroner of Ontario, responding to numerous calls throughout the year wherever there has been a sudden death requiring investigation.

The acquisition secures five jobs and brings the total staff compliment to 18 people.

Guidé par le contexte mondial « Innovation scientifique et technique » son intention était de faciliter la vie quotidienne des gens ayant des troubles de mobilité dans des pays en voie de développement. Le fauteuil a été construit de matériaux réclamés et n’a coûté qu’environs 35$. Voici Mme Hunt, directrice adjointe, qui met le prototype à l’essai.

Contact Ontarois : Soirée de clôture des vitrines après une riche semaine

Samedi aura lieu le gala de l’événement, qui remettra huit prix aux artistes, dont le prix du Coup de cœur. Si ces prix garantissent une tournée durant la programmation 2016-2017, un panel délibéra ensuite pour planifier les différents artistes qui seront retenus pour cette programmation.

Au-delà des prix, c’est le spectacle qui ressort surtout de Contact ontarois. « Ce que j’aime, c’est l’effet-surprise d’artistes émergents. Ce sont eux qui démontrent tout leur savoir devant un public curieux, mais très ouvert.

Lorsque l’on les mélange ensuite avec des pointes plus connues, cela donne de bons numéros aux gens, à leur grand plaisir. C’est ce que l’on souhaite, c’est ce que l’on veut», a mentionné Mme Fortier.

La 35e édition de Contact ontarois présentait ses dernières vitrines vendredi soir, mettant fin à une semaine où les artistes émergents et les vedettes établis se sont succédé en arts et en musique.

Si la soirée s’est terminée avec plusieurs noms très connus, comme Wilfried LeBouthillier, Claude Bégin ou Céleste Lévis, c’est la diversité de la semaine qui rendait très fière la directrice générale de Réseau Ontario Véronique Fortier.

«Ce fut vraiment une belle semaine, tant pour les artistes que pour le public. Nous avons offert des intégrales de danse, de théâtre sans oublier les différentes vitrines musicales. Je suis vraiment satisfaite de cette édition, et je crois que le grand public l’est aussi, que ce soit les plus jeunes ou les habitués des spectacles».

L’ÉTUDE Le ministère des Transports de l’Ontario (MTO) a retenu les services de WSP | MMM Group pour entreprendre la conception préliminaire, la conception détaillée et les études d’évaluation environnementale concernant le remplacement des passages inférieurs des chemins Bainsville et Westley le long de l’autoroute 401, dans le canton de South Glengarry.

Des fermetures de routes pourront être requises pendant le remplacement des ponts, auquel cas des trajets temporaires de détour seront établis.

Promenons-nous en raquettes!

Imaginez-vous donc que les élèves de l’école Rose des Vents ont le privilège de faire de la raquette pendant l`hiver. Il y a de cela quelques années, les parents du conseil d’école ainsi que la direction de l’école se demandaient quoi faire avec le beau terrain boisé derrière notre belle école. L’idée est venue suite à des discussions. Suite à cette décision, les parents qui siègent au conseil d’école ont recueilli de l’argent et de là, étapes par étapes; notre sentier a été créé.

Depuis, l`enseignant d’éducation physique, monsieur Stéphane Paradis s`occupe de prendre soin du sentier et de le nettoyer au besoin avec des élèves. L’achat de raquettes a été fait. Les raquettes sont pour tous les élèves de la maternelle jusqu’à la sixième année. C’est ainsi, que les élèves de notre belle école font de la raquette dans un sentier. Ces randonnées ont lieu lors des cours d’éducation physique et parfois lors de notre carnaval. On est chanceux!

LE PROCESSUS Ces études sont effectuées conformément au processus de planification approuvé pour les projets du groupe « B » en vertu de l’Évaluation environnementale de portée générale pour les installations provinciales de transport (2000), avec la possibilité de consultation publique pendant tout le projet.

Contribuer à exporter le talent musical de l’effervescence générée par la 35e édition de Contact ontarois pour lancer ladite trousse.

Ce sont donc Mehdi Cayenne, Yao et Stef Paquette qui auront la chance de représenter l’industrie franco-ontarienne le 18 janvier au Centre Culturel Canadien à Paris.

Pour ce qui est de la Trousse à l’export, c ’e s t réellement un outil d’«accompagnement», soutient Karine Lamarche, gestionnaire des communications et du développement de partenariats chez

Depuis quelques années on envoie des artistes franco-ontariens à l’international grâce notamment à l’Initiative de Promotion à l’International de la Musique Francophone Ontarienne (IPIMFO). Cette année, on a décidé d’aller plus loin dans l’avancement de la culture franco-ontarienne en faisant la promotion d’une «Trousse à l’export».

L’IPIMFO enverra pour la première fois en son nom officiel trois artistes se produire chez les cousins français. On profitera également

Réseau Ontario. Celle qui a contribué à l’élaboration du guide explique que celui-ci offre des conseils sur «comment se présenter» autant que comment s’adapter aux différents types de salle, en passant par la liste des diffuseurs européens.

C’est un outil «très pédagogique [et] très créatif», a-t-elle affirmé, mais qui n’est pas directif. Cela fait en sorte qu’il est très facilement adaptable. «Chaque artiste va prendre ce qu’il a besoin», a souligné Mme Lafleur.

De son côté l’auteur-compositeur-interprète Mehdi Cayenne est d’avis qu’un tel guide peut être un bon moyen de s’éveiller aux «sensibilités culturelles» et permettre aux artistes de mieux s’adapter à l’univers culturel dans lequel ils veulent se plonger.

fennel seeds Large pinch of red pepper flakes 1 28 -ounce can whole plum tomatoes, crushed by hand Kosher salt 1/4 cup low-fat small-curd cottage cheese 1/4 cup shredded part-skim mozzarella cheese 2 tablespoons grated parmesan cheese 1 large egg, lightly beaten Directions Make the stuffed shells: Bring a large pot of salted water to a boil. Add the pasta shells and cook until slightly softened but still firm, about 7 minutes. Drain and rinse under cold water.

Drizzle with olive oil and toss; set aside.

Heat 2 tablespoons olive oil in a large nonstick skillet over medium-high heat. Add the onion and cook, stirring occasionally, until soft, about 4 minutes. Add the garlic and cook, stirring, 30 seconds. Add the mushrooms and cook, undisturbed, until golden in spots, about 2 minutes. Add 1/4 teaspoon salt and

continue cooking, stirring occasionally, until the mushrooms are soft, about 5 more minutes. Add the spinach and stir until heated through, about 2 minutes. Let cool completely.

Finely chop the spinach-mushroom mixture and combine in a bowl with the cottage cheese, mozzarella, parmesan, egg, basil and 1/4 teaspoon salt. Stuff each shell with about 2 tablespoons of the filling; set aside.

Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. Make the tomato sauce: Heat the olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the garlic, fennel seeds and red pepper flakes and cook, stirring, until lightly golden, about 30 seconds. Add the tomatoes, then rinse out the can with 1 cup water and add to the skillet; add 1/4 teaspoon salt. Bring to a simmer and cook until slightly thickened, about 10 minutes. Transfer to a blender and puree until smooth. Return to the

skillet and rinse out the blender.

Make the cheese sauce: Combine the cottage cheese, mozzarella, parmesan and egg in the blender and puree until smooth.

Brush a 9-by-13-inch baking dish with olive oil and pour in half of the tomato sauce. Add the stuffed shells, then top with the remaining tomato sauce. Cover with aluminum foil and bake 25 minutes; uncover and continue baking until bubbly, 15 to 20 more minutes. Turn on the broiler; drizzle the shells with the cheese sauce and broil, about 2 minutes.

In a mixing bowl, beat cream cheese, peanut butter, 1 cup sugar, 1 tablespoon butter, and vanilla until smooth. Whip the cream, and fold into the peanut butter mixture.

Gently spoon filing into crust. Garnish pie with chocolate or cookie crumbs if desired.

Refrigerate for several hours before serving.

New restaurant looks to spice things up downtown CORNWALL, Ontario - Backa Yawd Caribbean Cuisine, a hot idea in Cornwall, is looking to spice things up.

The new restaurant spearheaded by Lee Theodore and Roger Caron will be featuring some of their sizzling dishes at two events this week in Cornwall that will benefit a local gardening and environmental group.

“Backa Yawd Caribbean Cuisine is the result of 10 years of conversations had over a many great meals. For the past eight months we have organized a few pop up dinners to test the viability of the idea in Cornwall,” said Theodore.

Western nations improve relations with Iran Opinion Column – Sultan Jessa Iran is finally on the bounce after decades of decay.

And, there are indications Canada will be getting on the bandwagon.

Foreign Affairs Minister Stephane Dion hinted Canada may remove sanctions against Iran following a landmark deal brokered by the United States President Barack Obama who completes his two terms later this year making way for a new president.

Obama was determined and succeeded in curbing Tehran’s nuclear ambitions for the foreseeable future.

This was a big coup for Obama.

United States and many other Western nations are readying to remove barriers.

This means Iran will be able to resume trading and exporting oil to countries willing to buy the liquid gold from Teheran.

Canada has no choice but to join in.

Dion indicated Canada will decide in a timely fashion so that numerous major companies are not left out dealing with Iran.

In recent weeks, Iran has taken several steps to normalize relations with the former enemy, the United States.

Imprisoned journalists have been released and straying sailors, who were in Iranian waters,

were promptly let go after admitting their mistake.

This shows Iran is determined to normalize relations with the world as rapidly as possible.

American and Iran have been old foes since 1979.

Obama tried his best to extend a welcoming hand to Iran and this time his gesture was accepted.

The relations between the two countries hold a lot of promise for bilateral co-operation and furthering peace in the Middle East.

Israel does not agree to this.

But, this is expected.

Israel was never interested in this.

United States Secretary of State John Kerry and his Iranian counterpart Hassan Rouhani have been meeting and discussing normalization of relations and the lifting of sanctions for months.

Now with sanctions lifted, Iran can start withdrawing assets from frozen assets believed to be worth billions of dollars.

Iran is a key player in the Middle East.

It is the region’s most powerful most powerful Islamic country.

Iran is a prominent, non-Arab Muslim nation.

For peace to return to Syria, a political situation will have to be sought.

And this could not be done without some cooperation, help and support from Iran.

If I was gainfully employed in the States, as I was in 1964, then earn, collect or receive might be what he’s getting at. 1964: he’s far too young to know about my time in California. Of course, by ‘time’ I don’t mean ‘doing time’. Hold on! Collect, gather: we sometimes come across interesting pieces of driftwood, river bed pebbles and blueberries. Then there’s ‘come into’. I’ve never come into any inheritance from a dead relative in the States. Maybe he’s asking if I caught or contracted anything. We paddle and hike, but we don’t fish; we dress warmly and drink only

water that’s safe, so we don’t catch a cold or giardia. Win anything? Not me! I don’t buy lottery tickets. ‘Score’ is another term I like. It’s slang for getting something for free, by great luck or perseverance. I’ve scored flights in a B-17, B-24 and Antonov An-2. During the War, soldiers used to get things by liberating them.

We took him to Dr. Navaneelan last year for a check-up, because we knew he was in pain. She immediately arranged for dental surgery at the Cornwall Community Hospital in December. As parents, it’s a joy to see Ricky’s face without agony. He is so much more comfortable all thanks to Dr. Navaneelan.

Ricky has no dental coverage, Dr. Navaneelan did the hour-long surgery pro bono. She is truly an angel! We the parents of Ricky King would like to thank her and her staff from the bottom of our hearts.

The staff at Cornwall Community Hospital was excellent.

Lions roar The Maxville Lions Club for hosted a breakfast for the alzheimer’s Society of Canada.

Together the Maxville Lions Club along with other generous donations received that morning, generated $830. Pictured above are Maxville Lions Club Members and Alzheimer Society Staff. The Lions Club members are holding the Dementia Friends banner to signify that they are now Dementia Friends.

A turkey was chatting with a bull.

‘I would love to be able to get to the top of that tree’ sighed the turkey, ‘but I haven’t got the energy.’ ‘Well, why don’t you nibble on some of my droppings?’ replied the bull. They’re packed with nutrients.’

The turkey pecked at a lump of dung, and found it actually gave him enough strength to reach the lowest branch of the tree.

The next day, after eating some more dung, he reached the second branch.

Finally after a fourth night, the turkey was proudly perched at the top of the tree.

He was promptly spotted by a farmer, who shot him out of the tree.

Moral of the story: B.S. might get you to the top, but it won’t keep you there.
