Live from Cornwall, it’s the Year in Review!

Pictured at the Team Cornwall Year in Review meeting, this morning, Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy presents a memento to Don Fairweather, former Dean at St Lawrence College, who retired earlier this year. and 2.6 million respectively. Other major changes in the city’s landscape took place with the lowering of the main span of the international bridge and the maintenance and facelift to our water tank. “You can see it from miles away, said Peters of the water tank. It’s a great calling card for the city. Seaway News was also singled out for the success of its most popular edition ever of Cornwall Living Magazine, with local blues

guitarist, Paul Deslauriers on the cover. “We can’t keep it on the newsstands.” The mention of our friendly city on the iconic Saturday Night Live, hosted by Cornwall native, Ryan Gosling, was certainly not missed. The 90-minute presentation was followed by a vendor market featuring local artisans. Full details of the meeting can be found on the Choose Cornwall website at www.choosecornwall.ca.

CORNWALL, Ontario - From the top of the world podium in athletics to the bright lights of the Saturday Night Live studio, in New York City, Cornwall’s international profile, among other successes for the past year, were highlighted at the annual Team Cornwall Year in Review, held at the Galaxy Cinemas, on Wednesday. It was a full house as members of the business community attended the early morning breakfast and meeting, presented by Bob Peters of Cornwall Economic Development, who led the presentation with over 200 good news stories. “It was another busy year with the value of building permits expected to top 55 million, and an anticipated busy start to 2016,” said Peters. On the residential front, among many, at the Cotton Mill District, the new Edison building opened, with occupancy by residents and businesses already taking place. Other changes to city scape took shape in the form of the Knox City Centre, 36 unit apartment building, downtown, as well as various subdivisions around the city. As far as special events, last year, according to Cornwall Tourism, their impact for 2015 topped 221 million dollars. These included the International Plowing Match with an estimated attendance of 83,000, the effects of which were felt here in Cornwall. The event drew visitors from across Ontario, Quebec and the States. Others included The Shorty Jenkins classic

which brought world class curlers to Cornwall including some of the biggest names in the sport. “Beerfest was a knock out success,” said Peters. Held at NAV Centre, it attracted over 1200 people, showcasing local vendors and restaurants. It will return in 2016. Cornwall Foodfest was another new event, held downtown, which featured a number of food trucks with specialty food and local restaurants. The event drew more than 5000 people. Cornwall and Area Pop Expo’s inaugural event attracted 3500 people at the Benson Centre, and be back in 2016 as a two-day event. Peters highlighted some of the amazing success stories, from community members, including Emily Vallance, 14, world kick boxing champion, who will defend her title in China, next year, as well as high school students, Samantha Peetes and Jeremy Mallette, who won gold at the Canada-wide science fair. “We may have the athletic excellence but we also have the academic excellence, as well. They are role models for the rest of our students, throughout the school system, of what you can achieve,” said Peters. Celebrating milestones, the Cornwall Public Library, which opened its doors in 1895, celebrated 120 and Cornwall Chamber of commerce, its 125th. As far as the institutional sector, the Agape Centre completed a major renovation of one million dollars, and the Cornwall Community Hospital broke ground on its new additions and mental health services centre, as well as the development of a new chemotherapy suite to be operational in 2016. “This is great for our needs and attracting new residents and businesses,” said Peters. On the educational side, construction on Bridgewood Elementary, at Marleau and Nick Kaneb Drive, began in the spring, and Central Public and Eamer’s Corners schools each received expansions to the tune of 2.3 million

City provides nearly $11k The City of Cornwall is a proud supporter of the United Way of SDG. This year, a contribution of $10,901.98 is being made to the United Way by way of payroll deductions from City employees (including Cornwall Police). From left are Mayor Leslie O’Shaughnessy, Administrative Assistant Diane Brown, Alan Armstrong, President of CUPE 3251, United Way Executive Director Lori Greer, and Deputy Police Chief and United Way President Danny Aikman.

Movie time! More than 1,000 students from all six French Schools (Rose des vents, L’Héritage, Marie-Tanguay, Sainte-Lucie, Notre-Dame & Le Pavillon La Citadelle) in Cornwall went to the movies at Galaxy Cinema to view the remake of a classic movie called «La guerre des tuques». This group of youngsters had a blast.

Carleton U and SLC band together to offer transfer pathways for students CORNWALL, Ontario - Carleton University and St. Lawrence College announced Wednesday they are making it easier for students to transfer between institutions with new agreements that will apply to all college graduates. Recipients of three-year advanced diplomas at St. Lawrence will be eligible to receive up to seven credits in a Carleton Bachelor of Arts program, while two-year diploma holders who gain admission to Carleton will get five credits. Fourteen specific programs at St. Lawrence

have also been assigned a minimum of five credits at Carleton in the Bachelor of Arts, Bachelor of Science and Bachelor of Social Work programs. Five credits represent one year of full-time study. Students must complete their programs with an overall average of at least 3.0 on a 4.0 GPA scale to be considered for admission. The programs include social service worker, police foundations, law clerk environmental technician, early childhood education and veterinary technician, among others. “We are pleased to be working in partnership

with Carleton on this agreement, which will allow our students to earn a degree following completion of their diploma studies,” said Glenn Vollebregt, president and CEO, St. Lawrence College. “This agreement will provide our students with additional opportunities to assist them in achieving their career aspirations.” “This model of strong collaboration is built on mutual understanding and appreciation for a shared commitment to quality and service to our students and the community,” said Carleton President Roseann O’Reilly Runte. “I cannot

think of a better way to start 2016 than with the announcement of this pathway to academic success.” Last year, Carleton and St. Lawrence signed a memorandum of understanding to collaborate in program delivery, credit transfer, applied research, entrepreneurship and other activities. Fast-tracked pathways for Carleton grads to access St. Lawrence programs are also being identified. The two institutions plan to explore other collaborative programs in the future.

Guests are invited to share their skills, such as singing and dancing. Volunteers are still needed on Christmas Eve to help prepare the meal and during the day of event. “We’re doing this out of the true spirit of Christmas,” said Blakely. The Agora Centre is located at 301 McConnell Avenue in Cornwall. The venue is equipped with an elevator, for those who have difficulty climbing stairs. During the holidays we virtually drown in paper, packaging and party waste – and there’s no holiday magic to make it disappear. Remember to use your blue box throughout the holidays so that recyclable waste doesn’t end up in a landfill. Visit www.southglengarry.com for information on our recycling program.

Great job, Bishop! Space provided through a partnership between industry and Ontario municipalities to support waste diversion programs.

Best seat in the house – gone! Nick Wolochatiuk Dances With Words nuthilltoo@gmail.com

Since I wrote my first Christmas-themed column in 1994, that means I’ve written at least 20 so far. The settings of some have included my Christmases in Toronto, Florida, Williamstown and Spain. The slants have been food, friends, gifts, traditions and weather. The Christmas influences have involved my Catholic roots, my Ukrainian heritage and the sea of commercialism that surrounds us all. So what’s the slant going to be this year? It’s about my determination to attend midnight mass at Toronto’s St. Vincent de Paul church. “No,

you can’t come to midnight mass with us.” “But why?” “Because children aren’t allowed. It’s too crowded.” My persistence shifted into high gear. An idea popped into my head. “They have mass, don’t they?” “Of course they do. It’s midnight mass.” “Well, if they have mass, they must have altar boys, right?” “Of course they have altar boys. It’s mass.” That’s why, at the age of ten I signed up to be an altar boy, a title I held for the next ten years. Altar boys are guaranteed to have the best seat in the Lord’s house. Five years earlier I had made the difficult transition from my mother tongue of Ukrainian to English. In 1949, Latin was the lingua franca of mass. It was Greek to me, but with

patient coaching from a kindly and enthusiastic young parish priest, I made the cut. In exchange, I taught him how to fly gliders in the schoolyard next to the church. Fortunately, the curmudgeonly monsignor of the parish had nothing to do with the rigors of altar boy boot camp. “Ad Deum qui laetificat juventutem meam…” By learning how to respond with that, I earned my ticket to midnight mass, 1950. I was a regular on the altar until that fateful day when I failed to show up for an altar boys’ meeting in 1959. The same monsignor was still in charge. “Wolochatiuk! Why weren’t you at the meeting?” he stormed. “I had to go to a parent-teacher meeting.” “Impossible! You’re not a parent. You’re not

even married!” “Yes, monsignor, but I am a teacher, a full-time first-year teacher.” “No excuse! You are no longer an altar boy in this parish.” I was thus served my papers, my pink slip. I was sacked, dismissed. My desirable position was no longer available. From then on I had to find a seat with all the others, those who weren’t altar boys. Ah, midnight mass, 1959! At Our Lady of Peace in Etobicoke everyone was lamenting that it was a green Christmas, dark and dreary, the ground frozen hard. However, as we stepped out of the church, magical Hollywood flakes of snow swirled about us.

OPINION

The year without a Christmas Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

My wife and I like to play this stupid game, where we add things to our ‘fake resume.’ Maybe you have done this before, where you list little things you do well that don’t really have any relevance, like counting backwards from 100 really quickly, standing on your head, or burping the alphabet. My ‘fake resume’ includes an entry concerning my memory of childhood events. I can recall - sometimes with specific detail - vacations, holidays and family gatherings almost down to the wallpaper on the wall. Christmas is my most favourite of those memories. Most of the time. Growing up on Yates Avenue we rarely wanted for much, because I was fortunate enough to have parents that worked hard and were generous when it came to their children. We always got a ‘big’ gift for Christmas (the one you can’t do without) followed by a myriad of other smaller gifts. We lived in the shadow of Domtar, in a neighbourhood where there were other children less fortunate than my brother and I. Maybe that’s why Christmas memories are as important now, as reality was back then. Claude McIntosh penned a column this week that implores people to remember the gift of good health this season, whilst diving into the cornucopia of holiday delights. He makes a solid point. If you’ve got your health, you’ve got it all. Just ask people like Shawna Savard and Britney Truelove. Poor Shawna lost her son Cameron just

weeks ago to a heart ailment. He was only 17. And Britney stood post at CHEO and a myriad of other hospitals in recent month while her son Alexander Lazore fought against brain cancer. Alexander was dubbed ‘The Warrior’ and pushed back against the disease with all the strength he could muster, but tragically passed away Dec. 18. I’ve heard people whisper countless times: “What a tragedy…and right before Christmas.” The truth is, there’s no good time to be faced with the news that a loved one, especially a child, has passed away. All too often, though, it happens at this time of year…ruining what is supposed to be a happy occasion for years to come. Sometimes forever. My photographic Christmas memory includes a decidedly somber holiday time from 1991, when my grandfather passed away. It was the first time I had been faced with the death of a prominent member of my family. While some people are born without grandparents, and others loose them at a young age, I was 17 when the first of my grandparents passed away. Old enough to remember everything in stark detail. His death was not a jarring episode like a heart attack or a stroke. Instead it was one of those agonizingly long events that started in early December and ended just a couple of days after Christmas when he finally let go. I can remember leaving CCVS on the last day of school with plenty of classmates whooping and cheering the start to two weeks of bliss. There was no joy in our house that year. I often refer to it, silently to myself, as the

year without a Christmas. We jumped through all the holiday hoops but it wasn’t the same. We opened gifts in the morning and rushed through a Christmas meal, but it was all for show. No one was interested in Christmas gifts or turkey. Everyone had one foot at home, and another in a hospital room blocks away. That was 24 years ago. In the two decades that have passed life has gone on. Our Christmases have returned to being the fivealarm holiday bonanzas I remember the most. And in that time we have lost more members of our family. Time marches on, they say, and our family is

no different than any other – we all lose people close to us, and it’s typically at Christmas when it hurts the most. But we should take solace in the fact that we had some time with those people we have lost. I know it will come as cold comfort to moms like Shawna and Britney. When I lost my grandfather you could map out his life in decades. They will forever measure the lives of their children with a much shorter yard stick. In time they will come to remember the ‘good’ Christmases and other times they had with their children – just like I remember my grandfather baking cakes and watching hockey games.

why they are worth less than these new arrivals. When you receive strangers into your home, do you feel you must treat them better than you treat family and friends? I don’t! Here is my theory…the reason our governments (federal and provincial) are welcoming these refugees like long-lost relatives is 1% compassion and 99% political gain. Does any other explanation make sense? Since this pledge to accept all these

refugees is irrevocable because governments always honor their promises, there is only one way for our premiers to regain a modicum of respectability. Fork out as much money per capita to help our own needy people as they will eventually spend on each of the 25,000 refugees. They can borrow more billions to do this because, after all, governments don’t have to pay back their debts. Jacques Matte Cornwall Ontario

LETTERS

Editor: I have heard rumours suggesting that the newly arrived refugees to Canada and those who will come later are going to live rather high on the hog: hotel rooms with generous allowances for meals, dental work, new eyeglasses, immediate medical attention, and numerous other perks, all paid for by our tax dollars. I have not heard any rumours to the effect that our own needy citizens of Cornwall and

other Canadian cities will start getting those same benefits in order to raise their standard of living to the level anticipated by these refugees. That’s right, we have no more neglected people in this countryso we have to import them. Why such generosity towards perfect strangers from distant countries and such disdain for long-standing Canadian citizens who cry out for help? I suspect there will be many poor people, sick people, young and old, who will wonder

It is the gift that far too many of us pay little, if any, heed until it is snatched away. So at this time of year, when gift-giving is in full flight, perhaps it is a good time to reflect, once again, on the gift that matters most, regardless which floor of the food chain life’s elevator stops at, basement or penthouse. It is the gift of good health. As the credit card commercial says ... priceless. A friend in California told the story of a family next door - dad, mom and two teenagers - that spent most Sunday mornings washing and polishing their price and joy, a spanking new Lincoln. Several weeks later he noticed that the routine had changed; they were no longer spending Sunday mornings, or any morning for that matter, doting over the luxurious beast. Later, from another neighbour, he learned that the mother had been diagnosed with terminal cancer. Suddenly, that expensive material possession didn’t matter. And so it is with most of us. We overlook the greatest gift we can have at this time of year, when commercialism hijacks the true meaning of Christmas. Anybody who has faced a serious illness knows the feeling. Suddenly, all those worldly possessions mean little, if anything. We grasp a new perspective on the game of life. A cancer survivor will say he or she now lives each day as a precious gift. Another will say he or she has come to appreciate all the small things in life, many things thought

important are no longer important. After I had noticed a television story about my oncologist being an avid motorcyclist I asked him if he thought, given his profession, that riding a Kawasaki on the Queensway was taking a huge risk. What he told me stuck like a bug to fly paper. One of his goals was to become a motorcyclist, so a couple of years earlier he bought a motorcycle and learned how to drive it. He explained: “In my business, sadly, I must tell some patients that there is nothing I can do for them and too many times I hear them say that if they knew their fate years earlier, they would have done this or that which they had been putting off. Now it was too late.” His advice: Take advantage of the gift of good health and start doing today what you have been putting off until tomorrow. MINI MUSINGS Note to Roger Guevremont, as fine a gentleman as he is a curler, - your pals in the Cornwall Curling Centre men’s division are thinking of you. ... Always good to hear Willie Dee’s “Hush Reindeer” tune at this time of year. CKON’s Mike Terry has been giving it play on his Sunday show. It’s from the CD “Christmas with Willy Dee and Friends”. ... City resident Mario Merizzi came across the spirit of the season while walking along a Raisin Region Conservative Authority trail at Grey’s Creek. Someone had decorated a small balsam tree along the path with a “Merry Christmas” message attached. Nice touch! TRIVIA It was once called Bellefort Street. Vibrant musical made the season for SVTC Roxanne Delage CORNWALL, Ontario - The Seaway Valley Theatre Company continued its 10th anniversary season with the musical, Disney’s Alice in Wonderland Jr.. “It’s based upon the 1950s Disney cartoon,” said director, Michael DeWolfe, “with all the songs (I’m Late, The Un-birthday Song and ZipA-Dee-Doo-Dah) and story of Alice in Wonderland, we all know and love, including the Cheshire Cat, the Mad Hatter and the Queen of Hearts. Featuring a cast of 40 young performers, ages 5 to 16, this production was very funny and entertaining, said DeWolfe, with a lot of dancing, music, colour and really great sets and costumes. “The kids have really risen to the challenge and the show is really professional looking. It’s not your average children’s show.” This was the third time, DeWolfe, a local veteran of the theatre, both on and off stage, has directed the children’s show. He said that working with young people gives him a great deal of satisfaction. “It’s really fun; they are a lot more open to being silly. It’s a great learning experience for them, and for me it’s really nice to impart that knowledge and to help create a show, and watch them grow as actors. I’m having a great time.” As a director, DeWolfe says that he also enjoys getting to put his mark on all aspects of the show. “I get to put my hand in every single pot costumes, the set design, lighting. You’re in charge of everything, all the weight is on your shoulders, but I get a lot of help, of course.” Lending their talents to the production were musical director, Stephanie St. Louis, and choreographer Paula Di Stefano. DeWolfe readily admits that he gets more nervous as a director, sitting in an audience, than being on stage as a performer. “I’m so involved and so connected to the kids that I feel like I’m up there performing with them. I catch myself mouthing the lines, acting along with them in the audience.” Also coming up for SCTC’s 10th anniversary season, Into the Woods, in February; Blithe Spirit, in May; and Rumors, in July.

How to avoid conflicts at Christmas

Make a seating plan If you’re responsible for the seating plan, avoid putting people together who clearly don’t get along. If you’re invited somewhere and there is no seating plan, sit on the same side of the table as the person who irritates you, two or three chairs away; confrontation is more likely to arise if you’re facing each other.

The draw If you are doing a name draw, you can also ask participants to provide their givers a list of gift ideas. For many dispersed families it can be difficult to get everyone together for the draw itself, but websites now exist that allow you to organize a virtual draw and even to register gift lists. The games Does a draw require too much organization? Just ask all the participants to purchase a gift that’s suitable for both men and women. You can then simply draw names at the party

and take turns choosing a gift from under the tree. It can be a lot of fun to incorporate the gift exchange into a game — why not make the gifts be the prizes for treasure hunts, board games, card games, or other fun challenges. Just use your imagination to find a gift that nobody will want to exchange!

12 Days of Christmas One burnt bird — Most fires start in the kitchen. Be certain not to leave your food unattended. Two drinks too many — Remember that drinking alcohol can diminish your faculties; this may prevent you from being alert should a fire start. Three strings of lights — Use only lights that conform to your local standards. Always use a residual current device (a safety device that can save lives by instantly switching off power) on outdoor electrical equipment. Four overheated rooms — Heating is another major cause of residential fire deaths. This is especially true among wood stove users. Five feet of smoke — Make sure your chimney is clean and the flue is open. Place hot ashes in a metal container and leave them outside until they’re cold. Six people trapped — Make sure your family and visitors staying for the festive period know what to do in an

emergency. Make a fire escape plan. Seven old decorations — Decorations can burn easily - don’t attach them to lights or heaters. Eight new batteries — Check the battery in your smoke alarm every week; use Christmas as a reminder to clean it and remove any dust. Nine children playing — Keep candles, lighters and matches out of the reach of children. Ten Thousand volts — Never overload electrical outlets. Take special care with Christmas lights. Always switch Christmas lights off and unplug them before going to bed. Eleven lit candles — Never place candles near your Christmas tree or furnishings. Twelve brown needles — Always make sure to water your tree to prevent fire hazards. A well watered tree will not shed any needles.

24 Hour Emergency Response

Water fresh trees daily: It’s time to decorate the Christmas tree! If you’re using a real tree, buy it fresh and keep the base of the trunk in water at all times. Keep your tree away from any sparks or heat source, such as fireplace, heater, or candle. Make sure you have working smoke alarms: With family and friends spending extra time at your home over the holidays, it’s extra important to check your smoke alarms. Replace them if they are over 10 years old. Remember that you need working smoke alarms on every story of your home and outside all sleeping areas. Test your alarms to make sure they alert you and your family if a fire occurs, giving you the precious seconds you need to safely escape. Check all sets of lights before decorating: Before you put those lights on the tree or around the front window, check the cords closely. Discard any sets that are frayed or damaged. Make sure you have working carbon monoxide alarms: Carbon monoxide is an invisible, odourless gas that can quickly kill you. Installing carbon monoxide alarms in your home will alert you to the presence of this deadly gas. Replace any carbon monoxide alarms over seven years old. Make sure everyone is familiar with your home’s fire escape plan: Develop and practice a home fire escape plan with all members of the household and make sure someone is prepared to help young chil-

dren, older adults, or anyone else that may need assistance to evacuate. Agree that once outside, everybody stays outside, at which point you can call 911 from a cell phone or neighbour’s house. 7. Give space heaters space If you are using space heaters to help take the chill off, remember to keep them at least one metre (3 feet) away from anything that can burn such as curtains, upholstery, or holiday decorations. 8. When you go out, blow out! Candles can set the perfect mood for a holiday celebration, but remember to always blow out candles before leaving the room or going to bed. Keep lit candles safely away from children and pets and anything that can burn, such as curtains, upholstery, or holiday decorations. Keep matches and lighters out of the sight and reach of children: People often keep matches and lighters handy to light holiday candles. But matches and lighters can be deadly in the hands of children. If you smoke, have only one lighter or book of matches and keep it with you at all times. Watch what you heat! The holiday season is one of the busiest times of the year, which means it’s easy to get distracted from what we are doing. Cooking fires most commonly occur when cooking is left unattended. Always stay in the kitchen when cooking, especially if using oil or high temperatures. If a pot catches fire, carefully slide a tight-fitting lid over the pot to smother the flames and then turn off the heat. Encourage smokers t o smoke outside: Careless smoking is the leading cause of fatal home fires. If you do allow smoking indoors use large, deep ashtrays that can’t be knocked over and make sure cigarette butts are properly extinguished. There’s more to responsible drinking than taking a cab home: With all the festive cheer this time of year, keep a close eye on anyone attempting to cook or smoke while under the influence of alcohol. Alcohol is an all-too-common factor in many fatal fires.

Canadians and coffee: how we embrace our morning companion (NC) The more things change, the more they stay the same. Take our morning routines for example – we read our morning news on tablets and not just papers these days, and we also know how to do breakfast on the go. Yet, one thing hasn’t changed – Canadians love for their morning coffee. That’s why Folgers, in celebration of 165 years of helping to wake up coffee lovers, examined how Canadians continue to embrace our love for the fresh home brew: 1. Eyes open, cup poured: For nearly four in ten Canadian coffee drinkers, drinking a cup of coffee is the first thing they do when they wake up. The morning shower, getting dressed and looking at the phone can wait until after the cof-

fee’s been enjoyed. 2. Meal couplers: Nearly a quarter of Canadians consider their morning coffee an essential component of their breakfast, and they enjoy them together. 3. Multitasking masters and mavens: Catching up on the day’s news – whether on an electronic device, a television or in our favourite newspaper – goes well with coffee for 17 per cent of Canadians. 4. Sip and work: Seventeen per cent of Canadians wait until they get to work before indulging in their daily roast. 5. Silence, please: The early-morning parents who value the opportunity that coffee provides

for quiet contemplation make sure they get a cup before the kids get up. They may only be 2 per cent of the Canadian population, but the effort they make speaks volumes about how important their morning brew is to them. www.newscanada.com

In Memoriam

MacRae

In memory of a loving Grandmother and Nanny, Donalda, who passed away December 31, 1996 God looked upon his garden, and found an empty space. He then looked down from heaven, upon the earth, and saw your tired face. He put His arms around you, and lifted you to rest; God’s garden must be beautiful, for He only takes the best. He saw the road was getting rough and the hills were hard to climb, He then closed your weary eyes and whispered, “Peace be thine.” It broke out hearts to lose you, but you did not go alone. For part of us went with you, to God’s garden, your new home. Sadly missed, and forever in our hearts. Love, Dale, Debbie, Cassie and Cole

Pet Tip of the Week: Family, friends, parties, decorations, food. It’s a wonderful time of year, however, many of the same things that make the holiday season an enjoyable time for humans, make it a dangerous time for pets. There are many seasonal items that pose a potential risk to our animal companions such as Christmas trees, decorations, electrical cords, wires, candles, human food and toxic plants. It is important for people fortunate enough to share their home with pets to be aware of these hazards and take steps to pet-proof their home to ensure their “best friends” are not put in a position where they could suffer. Also, please make sure to keep your pet safe by ensuring that antifreeze and other liquid automobile products are in tightly closed containers and stored behind closed doors.
