CORNWALL, Ontario - The Rotary Club of Cornwall served up some smiles at their annual Pancake Day and Silent Auction this Saturday, March 25.

Treasurer, Tom Wallace said that while the weather outside was frightful, it didn’t stop people from lining up for the locally famed allyou-can eat pancake breakfast, which took place at St. John’s Presbyterian Church.

The event has been a longstanding tradition in Cornwall, having begun in 1975. “It originally started as kind of a public relations event to give back to the community for the support they gave us and still do,” said Wallace.

Having been a staple event in the Cornwall non-profit sector for 42 years, Wallace said that people are always anxious to fill their plates for a good cause. “Word of mouth goes a long way,” said Wallace. “Most people know that it’s an annual event and enjoy coming out for a good meal in support of the club.”

The event also featured a silent auction with all items donated by local businesses.

Typically drawing upwards to 500 people, Wallace said that pancakes likely wouldn’t be on the menu for a while.

“We’ve been here since 6 a.m. and have served up a whole lot of pancakes,” laughed Wallace. “If I had to guess, I’d say anywhere between 1000 and 1500. Do I want pancakes for supper? Not really.”

With over 40 volunteers, or Friends of Rotary; helping with food, silent auction duties, and collection of funds, Wallace says that the Friends play a critical role in the success of these events.

“They help where they can, and it makes our day much easier,” said Wallace.

MORRISBURG, Ontario - Celebrate Canada recently announced some exciting news for Pumpkinferno’s sesquicentennial season. This year, both Fort Henry’s Lumina Borealis and Upper Canada Village’s fall Pumpkinferno will receive a combined $200,000 in funding towards event enhancements.

Already drawing in over 95,000 visitors, and generating roughly $9.5 M annually, the funding hopes to make Canada 150 the most memorable year to date at these parks.

The SLPC has made huge strides in creating and nurturing events which consistently draw thousands of visitors to south eastern Ontario.

In celebration of Canada 150, Pumpkinferno recently received almost $98,000 to make the upcoming season the best to date.

Sears to forge ahead

Despite speculation that Sears could be in financial jeopardy, the company recently addressed concerns.

Stating that they are still ‘a viable business that can meet its financial and other obligations for the foreseeable future,’ the company’s Canadian division operates separate from its American counterpart, which has currently undergone some major restructuring.

Sears Canada’s Communications and Public Affairs Executive, Vincent Power says that customers shouldn’t be concerned about closure.

“We’ve been operating separately for quite a while now, and most of the concerns don’t relate to the Canadian company,” said Power.

OTTAWA VALLEY, Ontario - The OPP would like to warn residents of an iTunes scam that has recently surfaced in the area again. Increasingly police have received complaints where fraudsters request payment for various fraudulent reasons through the purchase of iTunes gift cards.

In one scenario scammers impersonate the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) and claim that the target owes “back taxes”. The target is advised payment must be made immediately to avoid arrest and serious legal consequences.

The targets are instructed to purchase and activate iTunes gift cards and provide the codes back to the fraudsters as a form of payment.

LANCASTER, Ontario – The soup you buy at a big chain restaurant was never as good as the soup your mother made for you at home. The cliché is that food from home always tastes better. Maybe there is some truth to that though, Donald and Slyvie Longtin, owners of Henderson’s Grocery in Lancaster find that their customers are looking to buy foods grown near their hometown.

“We encourage anything that’s produced locally to come here,” said Donald Longtin.

Some of the local food featured at Henderson’s includes cashew cheese, from Zengarry in North Glengarry, grass fed cow yogurt from Iroquois, all-natural beef liver dog treats from Arf’ul Good in Martintown, and endives from just up the road at the Verlinden Family Farm.

Longtin explained that endives are a unique product that you might not expect to be grown locally.

“Stuff that’s local, people become loyal to it because it’s from their community,” said Longtin.

“People are going more and more towards local because people want to support their neighbours and not the big stores,” said Sylvie Longtin.

Longtin said he felt strong support and loyalty not just from local customers, but from the local producers themselves.

“Our endives producer personally picks them for us,” said Donald Longtin. “We’re local,

Longtin also said that the local producers he deals with are more than willing to take the time to help out a neighbour.

“I can text the farmer when I need something and I get it fresh, right away,” he said.

Even more than just raw produce, even some finished products at Henderson’s are made with local goods.

For example, JamBel foods are a combination of Jamaican and Belgian cuisine that are

on-sale at Henderson’s and some of their products are made with vegetables bought from Verlinden Family Farms. JamBel produces delicious Belgian waffles and Jamaican beef paddies, all of which are made locally.

“We had someone from Verlinden come in to buy a JamBel soup made with their endives,” said Longtin.

Trustee Wendy MacPherson pleaded for fellow trustees to eliminate R.O. from the list.

“R O is a diamond in the rough, and with everyone’s help, Upper Canada District School Board can have a winning JK-12 model we can be proud of,” said MacPherson. “Let’s not let our legacy this term be about closing schools, but about coming together and improving the lives of our students.”

John McAllister also spoke in favour of trustee McPherson’s amendment, encouraging trustees to turn their attention to a better future.

“In my mind, the status quo at Rothwell Osnabruck Secondary School is not an option,” said McAllister. “There are options, and at least part of the solution resides in several key areas.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Whisky lovers showed up in droves for the Wonderful World of Whisky’s inaugural event this Saturday, March 25.

Ian Bentley, Director of Conference Services and Food and Beverage for the NAV Centre has been imagining the event for roughly 10 years, and says it’s incredible to see his vision finally bearing fruit.

“There’s a lot of opportunity for growth with an event like this,” said Bentley. “I’m just excited to be a part of it and give people more opportunities to discover what Cornwall has to offer.”

Featuring over 100 whiskies from across the world, guests had the chance to sample a diverse selection of spirits throughout the evening.

Offering up a feast of godly proportions was nonother than the darling of NAV Centre, Chef Luc McCabe.

With a sprawling assortment of whiskies, it’s easy to imagine how one could become overwhelmed. However, certified Malt Maniac, and trained sommelier, Davin de Kergommeaux says that whisky shouldn’t be intimidating.

“Tonight people are going to be exposed to a lot of different whiskies,” said de Kergommeaux.

What’s interesting about an event like this is that guests will have knowledgeable people telling them all about what they’re tasting.”

Having taught a full master class entitled ‘The Audacity of Rye,’ de Kergommeaux has also been

hard at work promoting the second edition of his book, ‘Canadian Whisky: The Portable Expert,’ which is set to be published through Penguin Random House.

“I think that people are looking for something new, and they’re only now discovering how much high-quality Canadian whisky is available,” said de Kergommeaux. “We’ve always had great whisky in Canada, but now people are now starting to taste the more expensive stuff and realizing that for five dollars more, they can get a really nice whisky.”

Hailing from Prince Edward County, cooper, Pete Bradford taught a class about barrels – specifically those made from Canadian Oak. “When it comes to bourbons, whiskies and that sort of thing, Canadian oak is definitely the new kid on the block,” said Bradford, noting that most people seldom consider the barrel when drinking whisky.

“The barrel is an ingredient, and the Average Joe wouldn’t tend to think much past the date on the bottle,” said Bradford.

Offering guests the opportunity to learn through their palates, the Wonderful World of Whisky may have come and gone, but Bentley says there are some exciting things on the horizon for next year. “As it stands, we’re all set for March 23-24 next year,” said Bentley.

As Scottish writer, Compton MacKenzie once said, “Love makes the world go round? Not at all.

Whiskey makes it go round twice as fast.”

Eight long months ago, parents, students and communities at schools across the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) had their world’s turned upside down with the news that the school that they attended, the school that their children attended, the school that served as a hub of their community, might close unless they could prove to the Board of Trustees to keep it open.

It was a long fight that feels like it has been going on a lot longer than eight months. It was a fight that involved a lot of meetings, fundraisers, presentations, traveling, letter writing and petitions. Each community tried to show the trustees that closing their school and sending children away would hurt their rural towns.

The trustees chose to spare some of these schools, like Char-Lan, while choosing to close others, like SJ MacLeod and Rothwell-Osnabruck Secondary School. For some of these grassroot organizers, the fight is over, while others may continue the fight.

Now a new fight will begin and it is a fight that the trustees will have to wage. Whether they intended to or not, for the first time in a very long time, their constituents are now keenly aware of who they are and what they do.

The UCDSB Pupil Accommodation Review process has left feelings raw, and in some ways, has left the Board of Trustees in a vulnerable position.

Now, whether they were in favour of closing schools in their district or not, they will have to justify their decisions and their actions during the PAR process to the voters.

How many people typically vote for their school board trustee come election time? That number is probably in the low double-digits, but that won’t be the case this time around.

Cornwall and SD&G is a close knit region. The supporters of R-O secondary have friends who live outside of their UCDSB district, and I am sure that they will be canvassing and campaigning their message very hard come election time.

This year, is not an election year for the UCDSB Board of Trustees, but the school closure issue will

be the only issue come election time and each and every trustee will have to explain to their electorate why they supported closing schools like Rothwell-Osnabruck and SJ MacLeod. It is entirely

appropriate that the next phase of the PAR fight be fought by the trustees. When schools under their care close, the trustees must have answers for their constituents.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR My heart feels heavy for the students, the parents and all the residents of our wonderful, caring community for the unbelievably wrong-headed decision by the UCDSB Trustees to close R-O Secondary School.

Personally, I strongly feel that RothwellOsnabruck JK-12 should be grand-fathered by the Provincial Government to stay open as long as the students and our community wishes it so.

This should have been stated in the initial agreement with the Provincial Government back in 1958-59. Maybe it was. This is a question for Jim Brownell, our local historian and Heritage Trust member, perhaps.

The people of this area suffered so much already in 1959 with the flooding of the Seaway and all kinds of promises were made to the residents in exchange for them uprooting their lives (literally) with some losing their family homes, indeed losing their history, lifeblood, memories, property and their sense of who they were and where they came from. I wonder if these promises were kept. Indeed, if we knew then what we know now, the flooding would never had hap-

pened. However, hindsight is always 20/20.

Yes, they were financially compensated at the time, but what price do you put on a person’s history, memories, passion for their homestead and their past being ripped from them. One can only imagine the heartbreak of giving up everything you have ever known and thrust into the ‘unknown’. I wonder how many of the older generation died from the stress and heartbreak.

Those statistics have never been reported I’m sure.

I am not originally from this area. I was 10 years old when the Seaway was flooded, but I remember seeing photographs of the process and even as a 10 year old I felt profoundly affected. The sadness and heartbreak for the people of South Stormont can never be described, nor will it fully be, for the people of our South Stormont are stoic, strong and practical people. They are not complainers, but ‘doers’. Their mindset is to make the best of any situation and ‘carry on’.

However, there must come a point where ‘enough is enough’. This decision to close Rothwell-Osnabruck SS is just wrong-headed.

This is a once in a lifetime opportunity for UCDSB to show our young students,that it’s not always about dollars, cents or mega-schools.

Show them that you truly care about their needs beyond the seeming press towards urban development and away from our small town, rural roots and values. We want you to stand up for us now, not to reflect in five or ten years on how you wish you could have made a different decision.

Go back to the table in this ‘cooling off period’ and make the ‘right’ decision. Have courage and trust that it will work. Be a hero. We will all make it work. We want to believe that you have our best interests at heart, but we are losing faith. All we ask is that you do the ‘right’ thing. Do not underestimate our commitment to our students, our residents and our school.

What about all the wonderful, creative ideas put forth by our amazing ARC committee and many others? It felt that some Trustees came with a ‘closed’ mind and that nothing that was suggested would be even worthy of consideration.

This comment, of course, excludes the five Trustees who voted in favour of the amendment to reconsider keeping R-O SS open. Wendy MacPherson especially worked diligently and passionately on our behalf as did many residents.

We were unbelievably fortunate to have Jennifer MacIsaac and Teri-Lynn Beckstead at the helm, two very passionate, strong, intelligent women.

They made sure our voices were heard, but some decision makers were deaf to their words and to their intelligent, thoughtful solutions.

It is time for our Provincial Government to get involved. It is our children and grand-children who will suffer and personally, I feel that the amazing people of this area have suffered enough. Let us change the legacy of loss and grief of the past, make a gesture of reconciliation and acknowledge that we deserve to keep our students here to grow and learn in our unbelievably

Lionel Chevrier, the newly appointed High Commissioner to London, a political plum if there ever was one, brought a gift to his testimonial dinner at the Hotel Cornwallis on the evening of Jan. 29, 1964.

After a steady stream of speakers heaped praise on the former veteran Stormont MP who became a Liberal cabinet heavyweight, Chevrier unwrapped the gift for his hometown, where he launched his political career in 1935.

Cornwall, he announced, had been selected as the site for a new federal women’s penitentiary that would replace the old slammer in Kingston.

Construction would start within the year. The prison would hold 200 inmates with a staff of around 100. It would be built in the north end of the city. It would need about 30 acres.

Although off the political stage for several years, Chevrier still had strong connections with the reigning Liberal government. Chevrier’s DNA was all over the decision to build the prison in his hometown.

As far as Chevrier, a former justice minister, was concerned it was a done deal. Justice Minister Guy Favreau confirmed that the Kingston prison would be closed and moved to Cornwall. The government said Cornwall was selected because the new prison would be bilingual.

A few days later an editorial in the StandardFreeholder said Cornwall as the site for the new prison was “beyond any reasonable doubt.”

To say the political forces in Kingston were

unhappy would be an understatement.

Chevrier was no sooner at his new job in England when opposition to Cornwall started. The Elizabeth Fry Society was against it. So was the Canadian Corrections Association. NDP Leader Tommy Douglas jumped on the Not-In-Cornwall bandwagon, something that didn’t enhance the local NDP candidate’s chances in the looming federal election. The big concern was that Cornwall did not have a university available to inmates who wanted to work on a degree. The lack of drug and alcohol treatment facilities was another concern.

One group was against a bilingual prison, claiming that it “wouldn’t work.”

Despite the controversy and pushback from those who supported keeping the prison in Kingston, Stormont MP Lucien Lamoureux was confident it would be built in Cornwall.

“Cornwall,” he said, “was still in the (government’s) plans.”

But within a few weeks it was announced that the plan to re-locate to Cornwall was being “studied.” That is code for hang on, not so fast.

As the months dragged on, building a new prison in Cornwall became less certain.

Finally, a year later it was announced that the women’s prison would stay in Kingston to “save money.”

For Cornwall, it was a case of now you have it, now you don’t.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A new and uniquely named art gallery is opened in Cornwall this passed weekend, Saturday, March 25.

Cornwall artist Tracy Lynn Davies is the owner of the new Cailuan art gallery and the name is the combination of the names of her two children, Cailan and Euan. Cailuan is also a Native American word meaning “journey”.

Cailuan’s journey started from the desire to have a place for local artists to display and sell their work.

“The gallery is going to be able to help local artists by providing them a place to display their

work,” said gallery Curator Sandra Taylor Hedges.

Gala des Rendez-vous de la Francophonie de l’Est ontarien CORNWALL, Ontario - C’est devant un public nombreux et très enjoué que s’est déroulé, le samedi 25 mars 2017 au Théâtre Aultsville à Cornwall, le Gala des Rendez-vous de la Francophonie (RVF) Juste pour rire dans le cadre du Concours LOL-Mort de rire!

Cet événement était présenté par la Fondation canadienne pour le dialogue des cultures, Juste pour rire Management et l’Association canadienne française de l’Ontario de Stormont, Dundas et Glengarry (ACFO-SDG).

Pour sa troisième édition dans la région de l’Est ontarien, ce gala a suscité un grand enthousiasme tant chez les Francophones que chez les francophiles de la Ville de Cornwall et de ses environs.

Animé par l’excellent humoriste Jérémie Larouche, le gala mettait en vedette des humoristes émergents et de renom de la troupe Juste pour rire, à savoir Emmanuel Bilodeau, fier porteparole des Rendez-vous de la Francophonie 2017 et l’un des visages les plus connus de l’écran au Québec, JC Surette qui possède un style de « stand-up » à l’américaine, un brin d’humour à la britannique mélangé au côté jovial du raconteur franco-ontarien et, Jessy

L’histoire d’un peuple

L’école Rose des Vents a fait vivre à ses élèves un carnaval en différentes étapes!

Après des caprices de la température, les organisateurs ont réussi à organiser un carnaval pour tous les élèves de l’école. Les élèves des classes de maternelle et de jardin ont pour leur part célébré le carnaval le 23 février dernier. Ces élèves sont allés jouer aux quilles et ont pu s’amuser à changer de classe pour vivre des jeux différents. Ils ont aussi dégusté du maïs soufflé et regardé un film.

Lors du 3 mars dernier, certains élèves de la 4e à la 6e année ont bravé le froid pour aller dévaler les pentes de ski du mont Rigaud. Certains autres sont allés au Centre Benson, patiné et joué au hockey et au mini soccer!

Pour ce qui est des élèves de la 1ère à la 3e année, ils ont vécu des activités organisées à l’école au gymnase, dans les corridors, dans les classes et en après-midi ont rencontré Fredo! Nous parlerons de Fredo dans notre prochain article! Ce groupe d’élèves devait aller à la base de Plein Air des Cèdres, mais encore cette année, à cause de la température, ce fut impossible de s’y rendre!

Le sirop d’érable de l’Ontario est parmi les meilleurs au monde. Lors de la fin de semaine, les acériculteurs expliqueront les divers modes de production du sirop d’érable, que ce soit en

faisant bouillir la sève dans un chaudron posé sur un feu à ciel ouvert ou en ayant recours à des procédés modernes tels que des systèmes RO et des évaporateurs. Dans les deux cas, le goût est toujours exquis ! « La CNS servira gratuitement du chocolat chaud aux visiteurs de 11 h à 15 h dans 4 érablières qui participent à l’événement » a précisé l’assistante aux communications à la CNS, Kelsey Smith. Le 1er avril, la CNS sera à l’érablière et la ferme de petits fruits Proulx à Cumberland et chez Grampies Sugar Shack à Chesterville. Le

INGLESIDE, Ontario - Residents mourned the loss of their beloved high school after hearing the UCDSB decision to close Rothwell-Osnabruck.

With the community still reeling from the decision, R-O Accommodation Review Committee (ARC) member, Jennifer MacIsaac says that right now, what the community needs most is some time to help students absorb the difficult news.

“We are dealing with our children; our children who are in shock, frustrated, angry, sad, feel sick and filled with anxiety because their school board has failed them,” said MacIsaac in a letter addressed to UCDSB Trustees.

Following the decision, many parents expressed the difficulty of telling their child that they will be uprooted in the fall due to conditions beyond their control. MacIsaac

says that many are collectively frustrated, sad and angry about this decision, which will impact their children’s lives in the months to come.

“They are trying to imagine what next year is going to look like and they don’t even know where they will be next year,” said MacIsaac.

While Ingleside is the fastest growing municipality with the most children in the counties, they are now the only one left in SD&G without a high school. While JK-12 schools are privy to additional grants and funding, the estimated cost of closing R-O is $400,000. MacIsaac says that the UCDSB has failed R-O. Trustee David McDonald voted in favour of the closure, and has received some backlash following the decision.

“We are saddened that Trustee McDonald worked so vigilantly to sway Trustees to vote down the motion to keep R-O open and give us a chance to thrive like we know we can

once on an even playing field in regards to French language programming,” said MacIsaac. “Losing by one vote was devastating for our children, families and community.”

While tensions were high following the vote, some recounted fond memories from their school, admiring the community’s innate ability to band together when the going gets tough.

“Words cannot explain how much R-O means to me. It is a place that still feels like home, years after graduation,” said R-O

Memorial service for former Cornwall doctor Sultan Jessa A memorial service to celebrate the life of a former Cornwall doctor was held over the weekend at the Hindu Temple of Greater Cincinnati in Ohio, USA..

Dr. Premanand Nayak, an orthopedic surgeon who was in Cornwall from 1972 to 1980, passed away recently at the age of 80.

From Cornwall, Dr. Nayak moved to Cincinnati and practiced there until he retired in 2012.

Dr. Nayak’s desire to go into medicine stemmed from his deep compassion for the needy people of his native India.

For years, he worked in a government hospital and provided free services for the poor and the needy.
