138 in South Stormont on Monday, Feb. 24, local politicians met with Ontario’s Transportation Minister to discuss the urgency of improvements to the important stretch of road.

South Stormont Deputy Mayor David Smith explained that he and Mayor Bryan McGillis discussed the highway with Minister Caroline Mulroney following the Rural Ontario Municipal Association (ROMA) conference in late Daylight Saving Time January. They made a point to meet with her Begins March 8! again following the Ontario Good Roads Association (OGRA) conference on Feb. 25.

“Our intent is to keep doing it until we see some changes on Hwy 138 where it can be much safer for the people driving on it, the businesses (that operate) along it, and for the people who live on it,” said Smith. “All of a sudden it seemed like we had their attention a little bit more.”

Smith feels that more signage, including LOCALLY OWNED AND OPERATED flashing lights, should be established every few kilometers to remind drivers the speed limit, that they can not pass in a turning lane and that they are travelling on a dangerous road. Important milestones and fresh momentum at CCHF

It’s a wonderful time to be young in Cornwall!

The month of March always inspires reflection and planning at the Hospital Foundation (CCHF). Our fiscal year-end falls on March 31st, so it’s natural to review past achievements and explore new opportunities supporting local patients.

I’m happy to share that after a year of fundraising, we’ve crossed an important finish line. Thanks to your donations, CCHF has reached its goal of $400,00 towards a new mammography machine. Over the last decade, 66,000 local women and men have received diagnostic testing in Cornwall, and CCH is proud to continue this service. The final selection process for the mammography machine has begun and we’ll provide updates when the new technology arrives.

Late February brought a surprise donation thanks to a landmark occasion. Celebrating the 100th anniversary of Kinsmen Canada, the Cornwall Kinsmen and Kinettes clubs paid a special visit to CCH. Hardworking club members provided us with generous donations including $25,000 towards a new urology table for the hospital. The cheque was presented by Wes Libbey, the longest member of the Kinsmen Club of Cornwall and a prostate cancer survivor.

Winter is a great season for free or affordable outdoor activities, whether it’s skiing at Big Ben, skating at outdoor rinks, cross-country skiing in Guindon Park, or snowshoeing in Lamoureux Park.

This season, I’m inviting students aged 12 and under to participate in a colouring contest. I want to know what students’ vision of a perfect community looks like.

There are no restrictions for size, medium, or content.

We’ll display all the artwork at City Hall for the month of April. Plus, classes that submit as a group will have a chance to win a pizza lunch! Learn more at www.

Members of Provincial Parliament returned to the Ontario Legislature on Feb. 18, after a productive winter break. It was an opportunity to connect with constituents to discuss important concerns and opportunities in our riding. I can’t stress enough the appreciation I have to members of the public and the dedicated municipal politicians and administrators who took time out of their busy lives to bring their issues to my attention.

As the Parliamentary Assistant to Minister Steve Clark, I met with approximately 25 delegations from around the province at the Rural Ontario Municipal Association’s (ROMA) conference in mid-January. I also had the opportunity to host and attend eight consultations with local representatives and stakeholders.

Topics included pre-budget consultations, economic development, red tape, mental health, and the shortage of skilled labour.

Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Ernie Hardeman, and his Parliamentary Assistant, MPP Randy Pettapiece, also visited the riding to discuss rural economic development and Bill 156, which provides for food

safety and security for farms, livestock, transport drivers, and processing plants. I can tell you that the discussions were informative and provided important feedback for our upcoming 2020 budget.

The winter break also allows me time in our great region of Cornwall and Stormont, Dundas, and South Glengarry, to attend the many fun and enjoyable events that our local volunteers have become known for. Events such as the Nor’Westers and Loyalist Museum’s Hogmanay, the Children’s Treatment Centre’s fundraising dinner and auction, and the many local winter carnivals are just some of events that make our winter fun and enjoyable.

My staff at our local constituent office are always on hand to help local residents who need help to navigate through the complex web of government regulations. Constituents often contact our office for information on the government’s new Ontario Seniors Dental Care Program, which helps support low-income seniors with diagnosis and treatment.

To qualify, an applicant must be 65 years or older, be an Ontario resident, and have an income less than $19,300 as a single, or a combined income of $32,300 for couples. If you meet these requirements, you can obtain and complete the dental care application by visiting an Eastern Ontario Health Unit office or telephone 613-933-1375, or by going online to their website at: http://www.eohu. ca/. Once approved, a welcome package will be sent to the applicant, which will provide instructions on how to book an appointment.

Krissy is the energetic second-generation owner of a wholesale meat distributor in Eastern Ontario. A busy mom of two young adults, she deeply cares about healthy food and a healthy planet. When you walk into the shop (that also serves the general public), every thing compels you to browse. Large windows let you see their clean and lean process. In the stores’ aisles you get a sense of the area’s rich food culture. You can’t help smiling when you read that most of the nutritious ingredients are locally grown and processed. Did I mention that Krissy actively supports local events and charities? In 2019, she started posting tips about how to reduce food waste on their social media. Their staff

was totally they began talking about reducing waste in their daily operations too. Krissy’s biggest accomplishment was to finally source compostable and biodegradable packaging for most of their meat. This year, she’s adding a green item in her business plan, for the first time: sustainability initiative. Success guaranteed.

Krissy epitomizes a CSR mindset. Did you know about CSR? Corporate Social Responsibility is an international self-regulating business model. CSR helps any company manage the social, environmental and economic effects of its operations responsibly and in line with public expectations.

Sustainability is not a trend anymore. It’s actually an expectation. If, like Krissy’s, your business already has a lot of green and clean processes, share that on your social media and website. If it does not, follow Krissy’s leadership. There are so many sustainable ways to improve your operations and profit.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The second annual Suds & Sap Festival in support of Rachel’s Kids House of Hope saw a growing support.

Taking place on Saturday, Feb. 29 the selfstyled ‘most Canadian beer festival in all of Eastern Ontario’ expected roughly 450 attendees to come to the Cornwall Civic Complex throughout the afternoon and into the evening.

The guests were treated to a variety of tasty treats and a selection of wines, beers, ciders and more.

Kim Lauzon, Executive Director of Rachel’s Kids House of Hope said she was pleased to see their newest fundraising event grow in popularity.

“I see that there’s growth, I see that our ticket sales are climbing. More vendors are

signing up with us. The feedback we are getting from the vendors is amazing and the community seems to be embracing it,” she said.

The Suds & Sap tickets were $70 each and came with branded Suds & Sap cups as well as samples from all of the alcohol vendors.

All money raised at the event will go towards supporting Rachel’s Kids House of Hope.

Last year’s event raised over $20,000 for the centre.

“It all goes towards Rachel’s Kids,” said Lauzon. “It can go towards small moments of joy, helping hands or towards things we need at the Centre. It goes into the pot and helps us overall.”

New market coming to Harvest Garden Centre to provide a new local food option for residents. She said that they expect some of their customers to be from the co-op trailer park across the street and from commuters travelling to and from work along that busy stretch of road.

“We wanted it to be stuff you pick up on your way home,” she said.

Linda and her husband own a farm, and they say much of the beef and lamb will come from there, with other meats coming from Cardinal & Son Wholesale Meats in Cornwall.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Harvest Garden Centre has built a new market space that they hope to have open in May. Located at the corner of Hwy. 2 and Power Dam Dr., the Harvest Garden Market will offer fresh fruits and vegetables, cold cuts, other meats, and baked goods.

Linda Vasnava of the Harvest Garden Centre said that her and her husband wanted

Garden Centre since 1980, and they say that this latest addition will help them optimize the corner that they occupy. The Harvest Garden Centre is also the site of the popular Chef in a Bun food truck.

Linda says that all the food that will be on offer at the new Harvest Market will come from within a 100 mile radius of their location.

Kinsmen Club Cornwall

Celebrating 100th Anniversary

CORNWALL

The Kinsmen Club of Cornwall celebrated their 87th Anniversary during Kin week. The national association celebrated 100 years. Locally, President Robin McIntosh led a full schedule, from a free community pancake breakfast/swim and skate, to an afternoon social at three area senior residences; to a monster bingo with $9,950 given away; to a hospital tea with medical staff; to a night at the movies with kids; to a service club council dinner and a Day of Kindness. The local Kinette Club joined the Kinsmen at many events and took the lead for the Day of Kindness. Our thanks to the participants we worked with.

Kinsmen TV Bingo had a birthday month with larger weekly bingo games that has larger prizes.

The Cornwall Community Hospital Received a $25,000 cheque to purchase a new state of art Urology table from the Kinsmen Club. The Kinsmen also handed over a cheque for $5000 for their final payment on a commitment of $25,000 for the Mental Health project.

The Kinette club presented a cheque for $1000 as their annual contribution to health care.

Students were awarded prizes at the end of the day, and the winners will advance in the competition, facing students from across eastern Ontario.

“It’s always a really busy day, but things ran fairly smoothly,” said Laurie Marquette-Brown, who has been organizing the event for several years.

According to Marquette-Brown, participation was down around 100 students this year, with the absence of the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario at the competition. Previous years have included over 200 students competing from both the Upper Canada District School Board, CDSBEO, and L’Heritage Secondary School.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Businesses, organizations, political officials, and residents around Cornwall donned pink shirts on Wednesday, Feb. 26 to mark Pink Shirt Day. Pink Shirt Day began in Canada in 2007 after two high school boys stood up for a classmate who was the victim of homophobic bullying after wearing a pink shirt to school.

The sale of the pink shirts goes to benefit the Boys and Girls Club. Jacquie Richards, Executive Director of the Cornwall Boys and Girls Club said that thousands of shirts had been purchased this year and that hundreds of businesses from across the Cornwall and the United Counties of SD&G were participating.

“There is a lot of pink out there today, which makes us really proud,” Richards said.

Richards explained the importance of Pink Shirt Day and how it opens the conversation about bullying.

“We know bullying exists, but this brings it front and centre,” she said. “It is not a one person solution. Pink Shirt Day brings the community together to talk about it with our kids.”

This year, 2020, is the tenth anniversary since the Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall first introduced Pink Shirt Day to the area.

For the Boys and Girls Club, Pink Shirt Day is as much about celebration as it is about learning. Richards said that all of the Boys and Girls Club of Cornwall sites would have anti-bullying activities on Wednesday, as well as some fun celebrations.

What to do about the 138

If you asked almost anyone who lives in the United Counties of SD&G to name a well-known road in the area, they would tell you Hwy. 138. For those living in Cornwall, South Stormont, North Stormont, North Glengarry and South Glengarry, it is the main route to get from the south to the north, and from Hwy. 401 to the 417.

Now, if you asked those same people what they thought the most dangerous road in the United Counties was, their answer would probably be the same.

Travelling the 138 is a necessity of life for many in the area, especially for commuters. Unfortunately, there is a risk that comes with taking that stretch of road as we were tragically reminded again last week, when a young 27-year-old school teacher from Embrun lost her life while driving home from her work in Cornwall.

It seems to me that Hwy. 138 is ubiquitous with risk. I know someone who has been in an accident on that road, and I think that almost everyone who travels it regularly has seen something harrowing. We reported last week that in 2019 there were 51 accidents reported on that highway.

What can we do though? The provincial government is responsible for the maintenance of Hwy. 138. What should we be asking them to do about this road?

In recent years, we have heard that the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, has plans for future development of the 138. They have told Cornwall City Council that in the area of Headline Rd., they intend to install a roundabout to ease the flow of traffic as it enters the city.

This past summer, Ministry has also installed two parking lots in South Stormont near Hwy. 138 to encourage people who travel and work in Ottawa to carpool. The lots were installed with the express intention of getting people off of the road.

I’m not sure if the amount of traffic is the problem, or if it is the speed at which cars are travelling. Hwy. 138 is a 80km/h zone, but I don’t think that anyone drives along it at that speed.

I think that one thing that may help is stricter enforcement of the speed limit, and maybe increasing the speed limit because most people drive at around 100 km/h on that stretch of road. Just this past weekend, the OPP stopped one driver going 136 km/h on Hwy. 138.

As stated, the reason this road is so frequently travelled is because it is

a quick way to get from Hwy. 401 in the south, to Hwy. 417 in the north. The next nearest and quickest direct route between those to four-lane highways is Hwy. 416 near Prescott. I’ve heard the idea floated around that the 138 should become a 400 series four-lane highway as well, but I don’t think this is feasible.

For Hwy. 138 to be expanded to four lanes would require a lot of land on either side of the road to be purchased. This will be very expensive, inconvenient and landowners along the highway that will be affected by the loss of part of their property and putting up with the construction will be up in arms.

I think the only way right now to make Hwy. 138 safer is to install short lefthand lane passing areas at a few different points along the road. I feel that most of the accidents that are happening occur when someone is trying to pass. The solution to this is passing lanes. Increasing the speed limit might help, but it won’t entirely solve the problem, nor will increased enforcement. Those are band aid measures. People are going to drive faster than others, and they will want to pass the slower cars. The only way to ensure that cars can pass each other safely is to install left hand passing lanes to keep them out of oncoming traffic.

Thank you Bob Runciman Dear Editor, This letter is to thank the SLPC and Mr. Runciman for giving a local group of groups the opportunity to save the train and engine 100, at its present location at the Aultsville Station, near Upper Canada Village.

While my wife Lynda and myself are members of the Ontario East British Home Child Family, this letter is not from that group. The Aultsville Station, the actual road bed, and the train are

important to this area in many ways.

Many Home Children, including four Scottish orphans from my family travelled these tracks, past this station to the distribution home in Brockville.

The train is a part of the history of Eastern Ontario, the history of the people who lived here and who were the ancestors of people who still live here. The engine also brings tourists in off Hwy. 2. The Aultsville Station has a display of Home Child stories. We

act as guides at the station and when people stop, we have the opportunity to not only tell them about Home Children, but other attractions in the area, such as Upper Canada Village, Lost Villages, etc.

We ask that people support whatever group forms to save, restore and main-

tain engine 1080 and the train with it.

Thank you once again Bob Runciman, and SLPC for giving the opportunity to restore and keep engine 1080 and the train a part of the Aultsville experience.

A daring, well-executed escape, with down-to-the-minute timing, from Cornwall Jail on the afternoon of May 16, 1976 had authorities wondering if prisoner Gilles Lesssard had some inside help.

No question that he had help on the outside.

The Valleyfield man, owner of a lengthy criminal record, had been sentenced to 10 years in Kingston Penitentiary for armed robbery. He was part of a Quebec gang that over several months held up several rural banks in the United Counties.

Normally, he would have been sitting in a Kingston Pen cell on May 16 but his lawyers filed an appeal which delayed his departure to the Big House.

This laid the foundation for the escape.

As Lessard strolled around the exercise yard at 2 o’clock in the afternoon, staying close to the wall, a motorcycle rider was circling the parking lot next to the exercise yard stone wall. Suddenly the rider stopped and tossed a grappling hook attached to a rope and bag containing a handgun over the wall.

Seconds later Lessard using the rope was over the wall and on the back of the motorcycle.

Nobody could explain why a guard was not present in the exercise yard at the time of the escape.

It was the most daring escape from the jail since 1882 when six inmates tunnelled their way out of the jail, never to be seen again.

Lessard wasn’t as fortunate.

Months later he was arrested when heavily armed police, acting on a tip, raided an east Montreal apartment.

Days later he was starting his 10-year sentence in Kingston.

Shortly after the escape barb wire was strung along the top of the jail wall.

THIS WEEK IN 1975 - Police Chief Earl Landry said his department needed more officers to battle a crime rate that spiked 40% over a three-year period. The chief asked the police commission to give him enough money to hire seven more uniformed officers and five civilians. It would cost an additional $105,000. The chief, in a 50-page report, pointed out that over the years the force had been reduced to 61 from 65 members. L’HCC est fier de participer à la conférence « Les femmes en sciences »

COMMUNIQUÉ DE PRESSE DE L’HCC

CORNWALL, Ontario - Afin de faire connaître diverses carrières en sciences aux adolescentes, Ontario Power Generation (OPG) a présenté la deuxième édition annuelle de la conférence « Les femmes en sciences », à laquelle ont participé près de 300 élèves de la 9e et de la 10e année. L’Hôpital communautaire de Cornwall (HCC) est fier d’y avoir participé encore cette année. L’activité a eu lieu au Collège Saint- Laurent, à Cornwall, les 24 et 25 février.

Des conférencières invitées provenant d’une gamme de disciplines et de milieux associés aux sciences y ont pris part en espérant toutes encourager les adolescentes présentes à envisager une carrière en sciences. En outre, dans le cadre de quatre types d’ateliers portant sur l’environnement, les métiers, le génie et les sciences de la santé, on les a aussi incitées à élargir leurs horizons et leurs champs d’intérêt.

Quatre membres du personnel de l’HCC ont été conférencières lors des ateliers, chacune ayant son propre parcours de carrière en sciences de la santé.

Carol Branchaud a été infirmière durant 30 ans au Canada et aux États-Unis, surtout dans le domaine du travail et de

l’accouchement. Elle a aussi obtenu sa certification du Bureau international des consultantes certifiées en lactation. En 2016, elle a mis sur pied son cabinet privé pour offrir ce service, aidant ainsi les nouvelles mères intéressées par l’allaitement, en menant des consultations chez elles.

Avec plus de 17 ans d’expérience, Krista St. Jean est une infirmière autorisée qui travaille à l’Unité d’hémodialyse de l’HCC. Elle est mentore principale auprès de toutes les nouvelles infirmières de cette unité. En 2017, elle a obtenu la certification en néphrologie de l’Association des infirmières et infirmiers du Canada.

Nicole Johnston a obtenu un baccalauréat en sciences infirmières de l’Université Laurentienne en 2011, puis elle a commencé à travailler à l’HCC plus tard la même année.

Elle a participé à de nombreux projets d’amélioration continue, dont l’adoption, l’élaboration et la mise en place d’un dossier de santé électronique (DSE) par l’HCC. Elle est actuellement infirmière en informatique clinique, un rôle dans lequel elle met l’accent sur la formation complète du personnel en place et des nouveaux employés.

Luyao Ma est infirmière praticienne de l’Hôpital de jour gériatrique et de la Clinique de réadaptation respiratoire de l’HCC. Elle

est chargée de l’évaluation cognitive et médicale complète des personnes âgées habitant dans la communauté et du traitement des troubles pulmonaires chez les gens de tout âge. Elle siège bénévolement au conseil de la Clinique dirigée par du personnel infirmier praticien de Glengarry, à Lancaster. Enfin,

avant de travailler à l’HCC, Luyao était spécialiste des soins palliatifs en milieu communautaire.

Nous remercions les membres de notre personnel de leur participation à cette initiative communautaire si formidable.

Cette année, nous avons souligné la Journée du chandail rose le mercredi 26 février 2020.

Les élèves et les enseignants de l’école Rose des Vents ont porté un chandail rose pour dénoncer et prévenir l’intimidation.

Savais-tu que la journée du chandail rose a été créée en 2007 à Berwick, en Nouvelle-Écosse? Un garçon se faisait intimider à l’école parce qu’il portait un chandail rose. Le lendemain, ses amis ont décidé de porter un chandail rose aussi pour défendre leur ami et dire non à l’intimidation. À chaque année, à l’école et dans la communauté, cette journée est soulignée la dernière semaine de février.

Nous avons demandé aux élèves et adultes à l’école pourquoi ils ont porté un chandail rose : M. Robert, directeur-adjoint de l’école : « Je veux que le taxage arrête et que les élèves parlent aux adultes lorsqu’ils en sont victimes ou témoins.

C’est en parlant que nous pouvons faire une différence. » Tanner Dixon, élève de 4e : « Je porte un chandail rose par respect pour les personnes qui sont victimes de l’intimidation. » Mme Mélanie, enseignante : « Je porte un chandail rose car je veux dénoncer l’intimidation. »

Sous le thème 2020 « Je suis de la Génération Égalité : Levez-vous pour les droits des femmes », cette célébration trouve son origine dans les manifestations de femmes au début du xxe siècle, réclamant l’égalité des droits, de meilleures conditions de travail et le droit de vote. Elle a été officialisée par les Nations unies en 1977, invitant chaque pays de la planète à célébrer la journée pour les droits des femmes. À Cornwall, ce sera la fête ! Date : 7 mars 2020. Proud grandfather of Kaylan, Lyndsay, Sabrina Szuch, Cody and Garrett Leblanc, Shelby and Hailey Theoret. Brother of Marina (Raymond Lalonde), Gilda (Lucien Imbeault), Wayne (Diane), Clifford (Rita), and David (Gladys). Predeceased by Darrel, Armand, Norvil, Raymond, and Leatrice.Dear son of the late Eloi Theoret and the late Beatrice (neé Leblanc). Red served in the Army, Airforce and Navy from 1944 to 1955. In this time, he fought competitively winning 39 of 40 fights including three middleweight titles.

City to create task force to attract remote workers NICK SEEBRUCH

CORNWALL, Ontario – Cornwall City Council moved to further explore ways to attract remote workers to the city.

At their council meeting on Monday, Feb. 24, Council passed a motion moved by Councillor Justin Towndale to create a task force whose aim would be to attract remote workers.

At a meeting in January, Councillor Towndale had asked administration for a report on a strategy to promote Cornwall as a place for remote workers. While Towndale acknowledged that the report was well researched, he felt it did not provide an adequate action plan.

“Unfortunately this isn’t what I asked for,”

Towndale said. “I am a little disappointed even though this is a really nice summary and a very complete summary, but it is not what I asked for. Usually when we receive a report that affects one of our strategic priority it is highlighted in our report, that was not done in this case.”

Attracting new workers to the city is one pillar of the City of Cornwall’s Strategic Plan for 2018-2022.

Division Manager for Economic Development Bob Peters, whose department generated the report in question, stated that attracting remote workers was a part of his department’s overall worker recruitment strategy.

“We are currently targeting all young workers,” Peters said. “We are going out where

young people are looking for new career options.”

Peters went on to explain that he currently did not have a budget for a remote worker attraction strategy, which is why such a recommendation was not included in the report.

Councillor Eric Bergeron stated that a budget and a strategy was what the city needs if it is to keep up in this growing market.

“We are looking for very specifically a budget and a plan on attracting remote workers,” he said. “This is a competition, and this does not show me that we are keeping up.”

Councillor Dean Hollingsworth pointed out that there were more traditional employers in Cornwall who were struggling to fill employment vacancies, but Bergeron countered that

remote workers are not just a way to fill jobs, but to also grow Cornwall’s population.

“We are not talking about if remote workers are necessary, it is a part of our strategic plan,” he said. “It is not part time work, it is people who have jobs. I think a task force is necessary to help attract people here.”

Mayor Bernadette Clement endorsed the idea and pointed out that a remote worker is more than just someone filling a job.

“These remote workers can come with spouses, they can come with kids who will become Cornwall kids and might grow up to fill those vacant jobs,” she said.

Council will now begin to seek out members of the community to serve on the task force alongside members of Council.

ASSAULT, ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON CORNWALL, Ontario - A 43-year-old Ottawa man was arrested on Feb. 29, 2020 and charged with assault and assault with a weapon. It is alleged between 2014 and 2017, the man assaulted two of his children, on one occasion striking the youth with a bottle, and police were contacted to investigate. On Feb. 29, 2020, the man attended police headquarters to deal with the matter. He was taken into custody, charged accordingly and released to appear in court on April 7, 2020. His name was not released as it would identify the victims in the matter.

ADMINISTER NOXIOUS SUBSTANCE, MISCHIEF OVER $5,000 CORNWALL, Ontario - Jacob Thompson, 29, of Cornwall was arrested on Feb. 28, 2020 and charged with administering a noxious substance and mischief over $5,000. It is alleged while at the hospital on Feb. 28, 2020, the man damaged various pieces of hospital equipment and sprayed a fire extinguisher into a nurse’s station. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During the investigation, he was taken into custody, charged accordingly and held for a bail hearing.

LANCASTER, Ontario – The Raisin River Conservation Authority (RRCA) will be holding a March Break camp at Cooper’s Marsh from March 16 to 20.

The camp is for children aged 6-11. The children will have the opportunity to learn about nature and conservation from staff members of the RRCA, as well as daily special guests.

“We have an exciting schedule of activities planned for the campers! Activities range from science experiments to arts and crafts, taking place indoors and outdoors,” said Jessica Herrington, RRCA Environmental Technician.

Campers can register by the day, or for the entire week. Each day will have a theme.

March 16 – Winter Wildlife; March 17 – Maple Madness; March 18 – Nature Explorers; March 19 – Wilderness Survival; and March 20 – Art & Nature.

The kids will have a chance to learn about winter survival, sample maple syrup, dissect owl pellets, snowshoe and more.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Two longtime local friends and musicians, Nathan Da Silva and Brendan Soares, are currently on a North American tour with their Canadian indie folk band Reuben and the Dark.

Da Silva said it feels like it was just yesterday he and Soares were jamming out to their favourite Rock & Roll classics, two kids in a Cornwall basement with dreams of the big stage.

Now the pair have been involved in a number of musical ventures together, including their current tour, which kicked off earlier this month and is set to wrap up on March 31.

The band is set tos play over 25 shows from Quebec City to Vancouver, and NYC to L.A. “The tour has been great so far,” said Da Silva.”It has been very diverse; there have been very different settings when it comes to

audience and (venue).”

Da Silva explained that recent shows on the tour included a reception-style atmosphere in Paris, Ont., a school west of Laval, Que. as part of a Gord Downie Legacy School Program and a nightclub in Montreal.

Reuben and the Dark is a new experience for Da Silva, in fact he was recruited to the band just before going on tour, recommended

by Soares who was already a member. Da Silva said he studied the music for quite some time in preparation, and is well equipped to perform the new tunes on stage.

He is thrilled to be living his passion and dreams, all with Soares by his side, as the two have a long-established synergy on stage.

“It has been a lot of fun,” said Da Silva.

“I’m happy that Brendan recruited me more or less. We are playing a lot of new songs off the album Unlove like ‘Fault Line’, ‘Unlove’, and ‘Inner River’. We are also doing more fan

I drive a lot in Cornwall, and I have to say that Cotton Mill St. is one of the worst laid PHARMACY out streets in the city. Not PHARMACIE only is there parking, sometimes on both sides of the street, making it very dangerous to travel along, but it also ends, in not a roundabout, or a traffic circle, but a traffic triangle. When will something be done about this street?

WILLIAMSTOWN, Ontario – At least 500 individuals attended the Char-Lan Recreation Centre as part of the Great Canadian Kilt Skate on Sunday, March 1, according to Rick Ladouceur, Director of Recreation and Facilities for South Glengarry.

“North Glengarry had it last year and we were approached and asked if we would be interested in hosting (the Kilt Skate this year) and we said absolutely!” said Ladouceur.

South Glengarry staff wanted to provide a large, all-encompassing winter event free to the public and decided to expand on the number of activities incorporated. By including a sliding area for children, horse carriage rides, a hot chocolate and marshmallow roasting pit, live highland dancing and celtic music,

Ladouceur said he overhead conversation that the event got locals out of the house, out of a winter blues funk and into a celebratory mood.

“We are very pleased…there was a lot of interest,” said Ladouceur. “I have a philosophy: go big or go home.”

Don Cummer of The Scottish Society of Ottawa was in attendance of the event.

Cummer said he first initiated the Kilt Skate in 2015 with the Society, celebrating the bicentennial of Canada’s first Prime Minister, Sir John A. Macdonald. Now, the event is celebrated across North America and parts of Ireland because of his initiative.
