CORNWALL, Ontario – The City of Cornwall got a glimpse of the year that was at the annual Team Cornwall Year in Review at Galaxy Cinemas on Wednesday, Dec. 11, 2019. Mayor Bernadette Clement welcomed the audience and commented on her vision of Cornwall’s future. “We want it to be a flourishing one,” Clement said of 2020 for the City of Cornwall. “One where young students find opportunities for engaging employment so they can contribute and stay in our community.” Cornwall’s Division Manager of Economic Development Bob Peters outlined some of the successes of 2019 and lifted the curtain a bit on things to come in 2020. For population growth in Cornwall, Peters pointed to Statistics Canada information that showed that Cornwall’s population of income earners grew by nine per cent between 20102017, whereas the same number in most urban centres with a population under

Two stores to leave Cornwall Square before New Year SHAWNA O’NEILL

soneill@seawaynews.media

CORNWALL, Ontario – As many individuals set foot into the Cornwall Square to shop local for the holidays, they may have noticed some final sale items flying off the shelves as two more stores are set to leave before the end of 2019. Both Bentley and Garage Clothing Co. have announced they won’t be returning to the mall

in the New Year. “Bentley has filed for bankruptcy across North America and as for Garage their lease ends at the end of the year and it’s their choice if they want to renew or not,” said Melissa Boyer, Executive Director of Groupe Quint. The Cornwall Square also lost Suzy Shier and Payless Shoes during 2019. With the closing of a few stores, members of the

public have questioned if the mall plans to remain open. “I assure you that Cornwall Square is far from closing!” said Boyer. “We are redeveloping the shopping center and will be doing a façade renovation. It’s a great mall with a variety of tenants that are doing well since the population is always there to promote local shopping…Rossy is preparing to take a huge space at Cornwall Square.”

Rossy is a Canadian regional chain of variety stores with locations in Quebec and the Maritime provinces. When asked about rent prices for stores at the mall, Boyer assured this was confidential information but the company is charging tenants according to typical market rates. BROCKVILLE, Ontario – The Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) and the Glengarry community is morning the passing of a former school board trustee. Wendy MacPherson passed away at Hospice in Cornwall on Friday, Dec. 13, she was 50-years-old. In 2014 MacPherson was elected as school board trustee for Ward 9 which includes North and South Glengarry and North and South Stormont. She chose not to seek re-election in 2018, a race which was instead won by incumbent Ward 9 trustee John Danaher. “I was deeply saddened to learn of the passing of my former colleague, Wendy MacPherson,” said John McAllister, Chair of the UCDSB. “On behalf of the Board of

Trustees, I extend my sincere condolences to her family and to the local residents of her home community of Alexandria. She had a feisty spirit fueled by her passion for local rural schools and a strong belief that publicly funded education must serve everyone’s child. Wendy made us all think, and laugh.” All flags at schools in North and South Glengarry and North and South Stormont will be lowered to half mast until Thursday morning in her honour. “Wendy worked passionately for the residents of Ward 9 and for the schools in this area. It would be an understatement to say that she will be missed by all of us who reside in the area,” said incumbent trustee John Danaher. A Celebration of Wendy’s Life was held at the Glengarry Funeral Home, Alexandria, ON on Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2019. Online messages of condolence may be made in the

CORNWALL, Ontario – As students filed into the gymnasium where they would soon enjoy a Christmas luncheon on Wednesday, Dec. 18, their excitement could be heard booming throughout the halls and seen in their vigorous waves to Santa, who was also in attendance. “Our Christmas celebration is a fantastic representation of our community coming out for a meal, and that’s what it is all about: being together,” said Principal Ken MacDonald, who was happy to see students and staff enjoying themselves. “Everyone looks forward to it…everyone’s very happy and it’s not often you have everyone all in the same room at the same time.” Once John Cameron, Director of Education for the CDSBEO, said Grace, attendees helped themselves to a hearty meal of turkey, potatoes, gravy, cranberries and more. The efforts of getting the kindly donated food onto the table can be attributed to the success of the Parent Council as well as the Knights of Columbus. “This year we had more parents on the Council, so we are building up, and planning different activities for the kids,” said Parent Council member Ellie Fuller. The Christmas luncheon was started in 2018 when Immaculate Conception Catholic School amalgamated with St. Peter Catholic School and students have been looking forward to the occasion every since. Many students wore their snow pants, having just returned inside from playing in the fresh falling snow, while others were decked out in their best Christmas looks, paying homage to some favourite holiday movies like The Grinch. Staff members also made an effort to sport their best Christmas wear, truly getting into the holiday spirit. Go to www.cornwallseawaynews.com for the rest of this story PLUS additional SN coverage.

SUMMERSTOWN, Ontario – The Friends of the Summerstown Trails (FOTST) are looking forward to an even better winter season this year. Through an in-kind donation from Minimax and a grant from the United Counties of SD&G FOTST have acquired two new groomers for the trails. “First, a “roller” was built in the Minimax Express welding shop, using a culvert donated by Lin Scott Drainage of Alexandria; this is the second groomer that Minimax co-owner and FOTST member, Yves Poirier has built for FOTST. Rather than using the snowmobiles, this roller will be used to pack down the snow after heavy snowfalls to prepare the surface to do the tracking for the classic skiers and even out the trail for the skate skiers,” reads a statement from FOTST. The second groomer is a tenderizer acquired through the grant from the Counties. “The tenderizer will help us in breaking up hard, crusty snow which we have had frequently in the past couple of seasons due to

Council has had an incredibly busy year. I am so proud of the work we’ve accomplished with staff and our partners throughout the region. Hosting the Cirque du Soleil premiere showcased our ability to collaborate and support exciting new ventures. It gave us a boost of confidence and was a proud moment for the entire region. From our historic meeting with the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne, to team building and developing our strategic plan, it has been 12 months of non-stop collaborations and forward thinking. One such collaboration - our strategic planning meeting - has inspired much of the work Council has done in 2019 – and will continue to do in 2020. CITY OF CORNWALL The entire plan is available on our website at www.Cornwall.ca/strategic. The five pillars of Council’s plan are waterfront development, workforce enhancement, housing growth, economic development and population growth, and environmental sustainability. Council and I want to hear from you as we execute this plan. How would you like to see Cornwall grow? What are your priorities for the next three years? Connect with me on Facebook, or email me at bclement@cornwall.ca. In the meantime, Council will continue to work for you and for our community. We will focus on the waterfront, we will see growing community support for the arts centre, and we will start the year with a meeting with councillors from across Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry. Merry Christmas, Cornwall! Joyeux Noël!

The first full year of our provincial government, 2019, was very productive for the citizens of Ontario. We are committed now and for the rest of our term to making life more affordable, while making all levels under provincial jurisdiction more efficient and responsive. Throughout the year, we have continued to help our local communities offer the infrastructure, services and programs that enhance quality of life. We have committed to provide $7.272 million over the long-term to enhance commuter friendly projects in Cornwall, using our share of $195 million to upgrade parts of Highway 401, and allocating $3.2 million to assist local municipalities modernize their operations. We continue to supplement any property tax MPP, STORMONT, revenue by maintaining the Ontario Municipal DUNDAS AND Partnership Fund. More affordable housing SOUTH GLENGARRY will be available, thanks to a $5 million Housing Strategy allotment for the riding. To improve green transportation we have earmarked $3.9 million to Cornwall Transit that will over the long-term, make accessibility easier and increase the number of Handi-Transit and conventional buses. Meanwhile, we have allocated $2 million to upgrade County Road 2 in South Dundas and Lemay Street in Cornwall. Volunteer groups continue to be the backbone of our riding’s social and culture climate, especially for seniors. We have allocated more than $170,000 in funding for several seniors friendly organizations. I want to take this opportunity to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and the very best in 2020. Take a break from your busy schedules to enjoy the holiday season and visit with your family and friends. As always, remember to play it safe and don’t drink and drive. Don’t forget, you are all invited to our Holiday Skate and Hot Chocolate event on Friday, January 3, 2020, from 12:30 to 2:30 pm at the Char-Lan Recreation Centre in Williamstown. 2019 has been a busy, but very rewarding year with lots of door knocking, attending community events, participating in local debates, and transiting into my new role as our community’s Member of Parliament. I was honoured to receive a strong mandate from the voters of Stormont-DundasSouth Glengarry in this year’s election and have enjoyed every minute of the new job. We were one of the first new MPs to open their constituency offices, and I am fortunate that all of Guy’s staff agreed to stay on with our team. We have already served hundreds of constituents at our new location in Unit C at 691 Brookdale Avenue, and will continue the same level of customer service in 2020. On local issues, we have started our MP, STORMONT, work to address water levels in our part of DUNDAS AND the St. Lawrence River and to ensure that SOUTH GLENGARRY the local Transport Canada lands along the Cornwall waterfront remain in local control. I also had the opportunity to ask my first question to the government in the House of Commons about the delays in getting our fair share of infrastructure dollars. We worked quickly to address the damaging consequences of the CN rail strike for our local farmers in hopes to bring a quick resolve to the labour issues. There is much work to do in 2020. I will continue to focus on our local priorities, and be a strong voice for our region. I am grateful every day for the opportunity to make a difference in our community and our country. As the first year of this new Council comes to a close, I’d like to thank the people of South Dundas for their trust and support. We have made great strides this year by listening to what our residents need and moving projects forward. 2019 saw great achievements for the Municipality. We have a strong direction for our Landfill and water towers, the Iroquois Campground has begun construction, our Roads Needs Study was completed and the first year of the sidewalk plan is well underway. We have been able to celebrate our local businesses and leaders with the Awards of Excellence and connect with residents at the Municipal SOUTH DUNDAS Matters sessions. We have made considerable headway through our committees and meetings for doctor recruitment, the local school boards, economic development and many others. All this and much more has made 2019 a year to remember. Our Council is eager to continue our work in the New Year and bring new projects to the table. 2020 will see opportunities and challenges; by working together and listening to our residents, we will maintain our commitment to the growth and prosperity of this community. We have a lot to be grateful for and I thank our volunteers, local businesses and community leaders, who all work to make South Dundas a better place. On behalf of myself, Council and staff, I would like to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and Happy New Year. Steven Byvelds, Mayor - Municipality of South Dundas

No matter what job you do or what stage of life you are at, the holiday season is a great time of the year to look ahead with anticipation and perspective. One of the many blessings I have enjoyed in my life has been the privilege of having two grandmothers who both celebrated 100 years of quality life with sharper minds than I will ever have. My best history lessons came with a cup of tea and time spent with each of them. Their best advice usually focused around keeping things in perspective and understanding what is really important. So when I watch the evening news, I NORTH STORMONT often find myself seeing todays events thru their eyes and suddenly the obstacles in our path don’t look as big. They lived in an era that saw incredible challenges and unbelievable progress. Their generation endured wars, the dirty 30’s, depression, daunting health risks, but the advancements were also unimaginable for the day. Electricity, mechanization, advances in medicine, communications, transportation, all factors that started moving us towards the quality of life we enjoy today. At this special time of year, I hope you allow yourself to focus on the things that enhance your quality of life, like family, friends and community and let you keep perspective. We live in the best country in the world, in a great province and in communities filled with people committed to improving the quality of life of those around them. I hope the holiday season lets you count your blessings and on behalf of the Council and Staff of North Stormont, we wish you all the best in 2020. Merry Christmas … Jim Wert, Mayor, North Stormont

As we head into the holiday season and look towards a new year, it is an opportunity to reflect on the accomplishments and progress achieved throughout the Township of South Glengarry in 2019 and to plan for continued success in the year to come. This first year of the Council term was one that focused on assessing the Township’s strategic environment and bringing forth positive change in order to enhance customer service and maximize the quality of life of our community and residents. Notable achievements in 2019 include the completion of road rehabilitation projects such as Frog Hollow and Beaupre Roads, the successSOUTH GLENGARRY ful implementation of the Township’s first Active Aging Senior’s Fair, the adoption of a new Corporate Strategic Plan and, most recently, the hiring of a new Chief Administrative Officer to lead our administrative team. Our Fire Services staff faced a challenging year and an increased call volume, which required significant skills and professionalism to mitigate – we thank our members for their continued commitment to our community. Throughout the year, Council strived to engage our residents and community through increased public consultation with projects such as the ‘Pulse of the Township’ Strategic Plan survey and the development of the draft Tree Canopy and Natural Vegetation Policy. As we turn our eye to the future, we will work alongside our staff with the development of action plans to implement our strategic plan and will continue to explore opportunities to enhance and improve the delivery of our customer service. Council appreciates the confidence placed in us and will continue to work hard to bring forward positive change throughout 2020. On behalf of Council and Township staff, I would like to wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year. Frank Prevost, Mayor South Glengarry and Warden of the United Counties of SD&G

On behalf of the Township of North Glengarry and Members of Council, we offer our heartfelt best wishes for a very Merry Christmas and a happy New Year. Christmas is a magical time of year in our community. Lights are twinkling in the trees in our neighbourhoods and the snowflakes are once again adding a soft glow to our streets. There are many opportunities to participate in the spirit of the season. If possible, consider making a small donation to one of our local charities, or donating some time to help others. The St. Vincent de Paul Food Bank will be supporting many less NORTH GLENGARRY fortunate families this holiday season and I’m certain they would appreciate any small contribution you can make. Consider doing one small act of kindness. It can be as simple as helping a neighbour shovel their driveway or knocking on the door of an elderly neighbour to wish them a Merry Christmas and to make sure they’re okay. Our stores are plentiful with merchandise and our local artists and artisans have been busy creating unique pieces of art that would make wonderful gifts. Support your neighbours and buy local this year. On behalf of my family and Council I wish you a very Merry Christmas and a prosperous New Year! Sincerely, Jamie MacDonald, Mayor of the Township of North Glengarry

With 2019 coming to a close, it is a perfect time to reflect on the year that was and look ahead to the continued progress of South Stormont. 2019 saw a number of priority projects completed, including improvements to some of our parks and our recreation facilities, continued road improvements, another successful year of Community Improvement Plan projects, and much more. In 2020, we look to continue to improve transparency with our residents by implementing video recording to all Council meetings, which will be uploaded to our website for viewing. Speaking of the website, we will be launching a new, improved website SOUTH STORMONT in 2020 to help residents access information and improve service delivery. We look forward to working with our neighbours and stakeholders to develop a strong Doctor Recruitment Strategy to help our residents access healthcare in their own community, and will continue to plan for the Ingleside Water and Wastewater Facility expansion. We have many projects on the agenda for 2020 to improve our communities, and with that comes a lot of work. Your Council and municipal staff are up for the challenge and are ready to hit the ground running in 2020. From all of Council and Staff, have a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year! Sincerely, Mayor Bryan McGillis

At around 8:50 a.m. on Jan. 8 the Cornwall Police Service locked down the school after reports came in of a suspicious male carrying what appeared to be a firearm walking through the neighbourhood. The lockdown eventually grew to include every school in the City, and residents living from Ninth St. to Second St. and Nick Kaneb Dr. to Cumberland St. were told to stay indoors and the hospital was eventually placed on lockdown as well. All buses were cancelled and parents were told to come and pick up their kids. While no arrests were ever made in this case, by the end of the day, the lockdown was lifted and the police concluded that the individual was in fact carrying a BB gun. 4. RON THE RACOON WHISPERER On the lighter side of the news, we wrote a story this year talking about our friend Ron Graham, the Executive Director of Big Brothers/ Big Sisters Cornwall. While Ron has done amazing work in the community in his professional role, we wanted to talk a little bit about the man’s unique hobby. For many years, Ron has welcomed and enjoyed the company of families of racoons at his rural home. Anyone who has Ron on social media will have seen pictures and

videos of him feeding and caring for his furry friends. We got a lot of positive reaction to this story, and Ron was even featured on CTV Ottawa news. 3. MAYORAL SPENDING SCRUTINY Cornwall Mayor Bernadette Clement’s finances in the 2018 municipal election came under scrutiny in April, when she herself announced that she had over contributed to her campaign. The mayor was never issued a certificate from the Clerk specifying her personal contribution limit. The mayor’s campaign however, did not exceed her spending limit under the Municipal Act. A committee was formed to review the infraction and found the mayor acted in good faith and that the lion’s share of the blame did not rest with her. Also they found that the over contribution did not impact the election results. 2. POLICE CALLED TO MPP’S OFFICE In March during the height of the controversy over Doug Ford’s proposed changes to the Autism Funding Program, mothers of young children with autism came to Progressive Conservative MPP Jim McDonell’s office for a peaceful sit-in protest. McDonell was not there however, a confrontation began between one mother and a staff member. The mother’s four-year-old was playing with the blinds in the office and the staff member had said the child had to stop. When the child didn’t and after a heated argument with the mother, the police were called. No one was arrested and the incident was quickly diffused, but our story on the subject was shared province wide, many commenting

that it highlighted the difficulties parents of autistic children faced and why provincial funding was needed. 1. THE FREAKIN FIRE BAN Sometimes the smallest light burns the brightest, and a little incident can create a lot of smoke. By these puns I feel you can guess my feelings on the proposed burn ban that rocked Cornwall in the dying days of the summer. It is our top story of 2019 due to the rage and anger that burned across social media in reaction to this news. In September, Fire Chief Pierre Voisine proposed that open air wood fires be banned within city limits. As it is, only 260 homes per year get a burn permit anyway, and Voisine felt that the by-law was resulting in a strain on his department’s resources. He pointed to how often complaints over open air fires boiled down to disputes

LETTER TO THE EDITOR Skilled trades

Dear Editor, I would like to address and offer an opinion on the subject of the skilled trade’s shortage in the Province of Ontario and in particular respond to Jim McDonell’s Queen’s Park Report in a previous issue of the Seaway News. Jim reports that emerging technology will cause at least 50% of today’s workforce to require significant training just to stay employed. I most definitely agree with this statement as technologies are literally changing overnight. There has been much discussion regarding a shortage of skilled trades in the province and it appears the Provincial Government may be somewhat serious in addressing this issue. Our MPP in visiting Queen’s University refers to 3D printing, artificial intelligence, and Robot technology however at the end of the day we still need that millwright to change out that pump that broke down, the pipefitter to disconnect the piping and reconnect it, the electrician to disconnect electrically and rewire when needed and on a new installation the mason to anchor it in and pour a concrete base. These tradespeople as well as welders, HVAC techs, and plumbers are

in short supply. Prior to retirement I had the opportunity to be employed as a Youth Apprenticeship Program Coordinator with the frequent occasion of visiting twenty two high schools in Eastern Ontario. This took place from 2010 to 2016. During these visits I had the opportunity to make presentations to co-op students regarding the opportunities available to them in the skilled trades and the possibility of starting an apprenticeship while still in secondary school. In my personal opinion we are not making a sufficient effort in encouraging our students to consider a career in the trades. If we go back a few years and those reading will remember, that in the 1960’s and 70’s students were streamed into programs most suitable to their abilities. Whether it be the 4 year or 5 year Science Technology and Trades or the 5 year Arts and Science program. These programs determined a career destination. My high school had numerous shops available to students such as electrical, auto body, auto mechanics, welding, sheet metal, drafting, and wood working. For example if a student was in the 4 year Science Technology and Trades program in grade 10

between neighbours, something he did not want to continue to put his firefighters in the middle of. The move however ignited a burning outrage in far more than 260 people in the city, with residents feeling like a fundamental right was being deprived from them. On the other hand, there were those who supported the Chief, namely neighbours with breathing issues who were tired of having to shut themselves in their homes every time someone beside their property had a bonfire. As 2019 comes to a close, this issue is still up in the air, with a few public consultations held, but no new by-law yet to be passed. What do you think readers? What was your most memorable story of 2019? Email me a Letter to the Editor at nseebruch@seawaynews.media

nseebruch@seawaynews.media students picked a major shop for grade 11 and 12 and spent every afternoon in their major and oh yes they also studied Physics, Chemistry, English, and Math and left Secondary school with their OSSD. Somewhere down the road streaming ended, curriculum changed, shops were gutted and hence students lacked or were encouraged to lack the interest in pursuing a career in a skilled trade. At the 22 high schools I visited many only had wood and auto shops with much outdated equipment. Statistics tell us that 20% of our students do not attend post-secondary education of any sort. Therefore I ask what happens to these students? When reading Jim’s Queens Park report the Provincial Government appears ready to tackle this issue with additional funding. The funding intended needs to be used to increase a student’s exposure to a number of trades other than just wood and auto in our secondary schools throughout the province. Our secondary schools must provide more trade options with updated state of the art equipment. The student apprentice must also understand the expectations of doing an apprenticeship in that they must bring a

Seaway News welcomes letters to the editor. Letters should be no longer than 300 words and may be edited for clarity or length. solid work ethic to the job as well as a good attitude. Punctuality is also extremely important as well as that understanding that tradespeople are expected to work the hours required to complete the job. In thinking out of the box the province could create trade schools that would allow students coming out of grade 8 the opportunity to be trained in a particular trade, do work placements each year in their trade as well as obtain their secondary school diploma which would still allow them the opportunity to attend post-secondary education should they so choose that route. Another option or consideration may be to partner with the Community Colleges around the province. An example may be that a secondary student may attend St. Lawrence College for grades 11 and 12 and obtain a certificate in welding as an example while completing their OSSD. The most important thing the Provincial Government is that it conducts much needed consultation with construction companies, contractors, skilled trade employers and industry to ensure they get it right. Sincerely, Alex MacDougall

Jacqueline Payette. The concert raised $2,800 to help purchase Christmas food baskets for local needy families. *CKSF, in a large ad in the StandardFreeholder, which owned the station, wished all its listeners a “Merry Christmas”. The station’s 20 employees signed the “card”: John Larocque, Roly Forget, Bob Rowe, Bob Eadie, Hal Botham, Fred Pemberton, Alama Larocque, Tony Miseferi, Bill Gallant, Lyal Nixon, Mahlon Clark, Carl Fisher, Don Auty, Cam Hughes, Ron Carson, Isobel MacCrimmon, Doris Roberts, Big Slim, Grace Howald and George Lawrence. The station’s Christmas Day programming included the morning service from St. Paul’s United Church (First and Sydney streets), CBS News and Weather, the Oral Roberts Broadcast, the Bob Eadie Show, Billy Graham and the traditional Christmas message by Her Majesty the Queen which was printed in the following day’s Standard-Freeholder. *The Cornwall Lions Club carollers - in traditional French-Canadian Les Guignolers garb made the rounds with the ancient search of alms for the poor. * Eddy’s Barber Shop, 14 Second St. E., notified customers that the shop would be closed Dec.26 and 27. Barbers Eddy, Andy and Maurice wished everyone a “Merry Christmas”. *The 35 members of the Barbers Union Local 758 of Cornwall wished everyone a “Merry Christmas” and “A Happy New Year”. *MacKillican’s Dairy -owned and operated by John Wensink and Doug MacGillivray - notified its customers in Apple Hill, Moose Creek and Maxville there would be no milk delivery on Dec.

Menard Furniture, 245 Prince Arthur, had 21-inch (black and white of course) console model TVs for $299.95. *To accommodate the Christmas rush, the Cornwall Post Office hired 35 people to help regular staff sort and deliver the mail. Beginning two weeks before Christmas, city homes received twice-a-day delivery, Saturdays included. *The busiest place on Dec. 24 was probably the two LCBO outlets ... Pitt Street and Montreal Road. By noon on Dec. 24, long lines overwhelmed the outlets. A police officer was assigned to help with crowd control. This was the day when the booze was kept in a backroom. Customers had to fill out their order and take it to the counter. The liquor store employee would disappear to the back room and return with the bottle(s) that would be placed in a plain brown paper bag, not to be displayed until the customer reached home. *For folks who didn’t want to cook a meal on Christmas Day, 1955, The Chicken Palace, 107 Pitt St., was open at 4 p.m. for turkey dinner with all the trimmings. *The Capitol Theatre was open in the afternoon. On Dec. 25, 1955 the annual Christmas

The week’s Musings is in tune with the season, leading off with a flashback to the week leading up to Christmas 1955, when things were a little different. One of the big events leading up to Christmas Eve/Day was the annual Howard Smith Paper Mill Children’s Christmas Party at Cornwall Armoury. The 1955 party played host to 2,300 children of mill employees. The event was a joint effort of the company and the mill’s two unions. Every kid left with a stocking filled with candy and a gift, usually a toy or game, depending on age. Courtaulds and the Cotton Mill had similar children’s Christmas parties, one of them held at the Roxy Theatre. Some other sights and sounds of Christmas 1955: * The annual Children’s Christmas Concert was held in Cornwall Collegiate auditorium. The five-hour extravaganza that showcased mostly local musical talent was broadcast live over CKSF Radio. The 1955 list of performers included the Leo Motard Quartet, trumpeters Bobby McGillivray and Billy Heward, vocalists Nancy Ruffo, country and western singer Rex Silmser better known as Big Slim, vocalist Everett Rush teaming up with pianist George Patrick, violinist Raymond Dextras and accordion player

CORNWALL, Ontario - Dozens of local children will have extra gifts under the Christmas tree this year thanks to members of Summit Health & Fitness Club. The gym members dropped off toys totaling over $1,500 in value over a two week campaign with all donations being distributed to “Littles” with the Big Brothers Big Sisters program. “We’re really pleased and overwhelmed with the generosity of our members,” said

Summit Team Member Laura Hutchinson. “They didn’t hesitate to help when we told them the gifts were for local children.” “I’m really proud of our staff and our members who always go above and beyond when it comes to helping the community,” said Summit owner and GM Jason Dennis. Big Brothers Big Sisters Executive Director Ron Graham welcomed the support. “Children in our program will definitely feel the Christmas spirit thanks to Summit Health & Fitness Club.” This was the first annual Christmas at Summit Toy Drive.

- Cornwall Express - www.cornwallseawaynews.com

How to manage the stress of house hunting First-time homebuyers often feel overwhelmed when entering the real estate market. Here are a few tips for managing the stress of house hunting. GIVE YOURSELF TIME Rushing will amp up the pressure and is also a good way to make a bad decision. If possible, start looking for a house well in advance of your lease running out. GET A BUYER’S AGENT The realtor displayed on the for-sale sign is the seller’s representative. Alternatively, a buyer’s agent represents you and can help with every aspect of your

hunt, from searching to closing and beyond. Their ability to organize the chaos of house hunting will make the process a lot less stressful. PRIORITIZE Make a budget, decide which features you absolutely need in your new home and determine how important things like commute, proximity to schools and transit are. Knowing what you want and what you can afford will help you steer clear of homes that would only meet some of your essentials. DON’T GET ATTACHED As soon as you visit a home that ticks 105

some of your boxes, you’ll find that it’s very easy to picture yourself living there. However, this can easily play against you. If you get too attached, you’ll be devastated if the seller turns down your offer. This will only add to the stress of house hunting. DON’T BE AFRAID OF MISSING OUT The fear of missing out is common among house hunters but it’s best avoided. Don’t get drawn into a bidding war because you’re afraid that nothing else you like will come on the market. The notion that there’s only one right home for each buyer is a myth. In real 105

estate, there’s always another option. House hunting is challenging, but it’s a lot less stressful if you approach it with a solid plan, realistic expectations and a pragmatic outlook. 105

Storage Vault opened a new call centre in Cornwall, Leclerc opened their new factory which produces 1 million cookies a day, and Walmart Logistics added 500 jobs in 2019. “You will see continued investment and growth across all sectors,” Peters promised for 2020. “We will see a continued demand for local workers.
