Parts of bike path could need $1 million worth of repairs Nick Seebruch

nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Parts of the Cornwall bike path will need significant repairs according to a study done by the City of Cornwall administration. Specifically, the study found that parts of the retaining walls along Montreal Rd. that support that section of the bike path have severely eroded. According to an in-house assessment, the cost to repair these retaining walls could be as much as $1 million. “The in-house estimate is based on the cost of

similar types of walls like the one outside the Cornwall Community Hospital (CCH),” said Jamie Fawthrop, Division Manager for the Parks & Recreation Department. When this issue will be addressed has yet to be determined. According to Fawthrop the department is still in the early stages of organizing its budget submission for 2019. However, even if Council does not approve $1 million for the full repairs, some steps will have to be taken. “Without council approval, we would need to take intermediate measures,” Fawthrop said. The section of retaining wall under the bike bath extends for about 1 km from in front of GlenStor-Dun Lodge heading east to Boundary Rd.

Marlin Orchards hosts Country Harvest Pottery Sale SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – Following the scent of cider doughnuts, families flocked to Marlin’s Orchard for the annual Country Harvest Pottery Sale. “People tell me that this is part of their Thanksgiving weekend outing,” said Ann Marlin, original Co-Founder of the Orchard. “They come here and get the apples, the cider, the cider doughnuts...and then they come to the (pottery) show.” The show, which runs from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Oct. 6 to 8, features the work of 24 potters and two artists. Marlin explained that organizers carefully select which potters can display their work at the event. Suki Craig, a potter with Claycrafters in Pointe-Claire, was displaying her talents on Sunday, Oct. 7, trimming some of the bowls that were thrown the previous day. Marlin explained the intricate process of making the bowls to a few curious shoppers.

Marlin said that approximately 100 bowls will be donated to the Agapè Centre for the Empty Bowls fundraiser on Nov. 18. Tickets to the event cost $30 and attendees can enjoy a full selection of gourmet soups with their one of a kind bowl. Potters who were a part of the sale donated previously made bowls for the fundraiser. All bowls made over the weekend will also be a part of the Empty Bowls event. These bowls retail for approximately $25 to $40. Marlin strives to donate to a charitable organization annually through the sale. She also enjoys bringing art and culture to the area, showcasing renowned potters from across Eastern ON. “It’s a continuum of art at one end and craft at the other,” said Janet Keefe, local potter. “The pots that are made and showed here are somewhere along the continuum; pure art at one end and purely functional pottery at the other end.” Go to www.cornwallseawaynews.com for the rest of this great story PLUS additional SN coverage.

Cornwall walks in support of mental health Shawna O’Neill shawna.oneill@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Over 200 walkers were registered for the 15th annual Mental Illness Awareness Walk (MIAW) on Tuesday, Oct. 2. The walk commenced at 11:15 a.m. and ended with a barbeque lunch provided by Benson’s Charity Truck. Prior to the walk, supporters had the opportunity to learn about different community organizations that promote wellness, listen to guest speakers and take part in a photo booth at the Army Navy Air Force Unit. According to Angele Dalessio, Mental Health Promoter with the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA), the agency’s mission is to reduce the stigma associated with mental illness, instill hope and provide related services to the community. “We have over 16 agencies represented here today,” said Dalessio. Some of the agencies included Friends of Vets, Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) and family support programs.

“Everything that relates to well-being or providing some kind of service to people that may be having difficulties…we have invited everyone to participate here today.” Dalessio reinforced that the average age of onset of mental illness is 14, and one in five individuals are affected. For the first time, grade six students were invited to the walk this year, in hopes that early education will help them throughout middle school and high school. “One of the biggest areas is the education piece,” said Dalessio. “So we go and do a lot of mental health promotion in the schools and we educate on eliminating some of those myths around mental illness. And this is kind of what our event is all about: encouraging our community services that deal with mental health in some capacity.” “We want young people to know that help is available, you don’t have to struggle alone, you don’t have to suffer in silence,” she added. “That you can recover…you can live a life of wellness, despite having a diagnosis.” Stephen Douris, a speaker for the TAMI (Talk About Mental Illness) program, speaks

Job fair draws hundreds Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - For those looking for a new career, there was plenty to choose from at the fourth annual Cornwall and Area Job Fair. There were 40 different employers, and 17 service providers offering around 400 jobs and there were many local residents at the show eager to apply for them.

The job fair opened at 11 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 3, but according to Social Development Council (SDC) Executive Director and event organizer Carilyne Hébert people were lined up since 9 a.m. “The Employability Network of the SDC is a big part of putting this event together,” said Hébert. She explained that the network meets monthly to address issues surrounding employment in Cornwall and the surrounding area.

This year’s job fair had nearly twice as many employers attend as previous years. Hébert said that probably nearly 400 people had gone through the job fair by the end of the morning and hoped to see at least 1,000 by the end of the day. Some of the employers present at the fair included the Canadian Coast Guard, Sigma Point, who are looking to fill 10 jobs in Cornwall, Walmart Logistics who are looking to fill 150

warehouse and leadership positions in Cornwall and Leclerc. Leclerc, a cooking company who recently announced that they are brining a new production facility to Cornwall, were by far the busiest booth on Wednesday morning, with three lines from their table, to the back of the room. south glengarry candidates Claude Bourcier Joanne High Provided by Claude Bourcier

Provided by Joanne High

Claude Bourcier has been a proud resident of South Glengarry for over 20 years. He has a deep respect for the hard-working members of this township. He brings a number of skills and life experiences which would be beneficial to service as a councilman. He worked 23 years as a maintenance foreman at a chemical plant and for four years in BC in the forest industry. These experiences have taught him the value of hard work and dedication to the job at hand. He is a strong proponent of honest fiscally conservative local government. South Glengarry is a township with a limited economic base and the need to exercise sound financial management strategies is paramount. The water rate increases which residents are facing underlines why greater care needs to be taken in anticipating future expenditures Mr. Bourcier believes firmly that the council should be an open and transparent problemsolving body that works in the best interest of the residents of the township. Council must keep to its mission of being honest, empathetic, helpful and service oriented in their dealings with the residents of South Glengarry. Residents should not be faced with confusing and seemingly unnecessary paperwork and fees. Processes must be minimized as much as possible. Every interaction of the township with its constituents should have as a primary goal the achievement of the best possible outcome for the constituent. The citizens of South Glengarry deserve a council that has their best interest at heart. Mr. Bourcier will do his best to make that happen!

I have spent 30 years living in Ontario, the last 25 in the Township of South Glengarry. For most of my professional life , I have worked in nonprofit organizations, including the Ontario Federation of Agriculture, where a large part of my job was to develop leaders in the agricultural s e c t o r t o e f fe c t i ve l y d e a l w i t h MUNICIPAL,PROVINCIAL and FEDERAL GOVERNMENT. I have successfully completed many contract positions where volunteer recruitment and training were critical, as were sticking to a tight budget and timelines. I always deliver on time and within budget! The business of running the Township of South Glengarry is massive. All these issues must be considered: maintaining 390 kms of roads,61 bridges,19 buildings that the Township owns. There is also the Water/Waste Water Treatment Stations. Then there is Policing, Ambulance and Fire services, Programs for our Seniors and Children, Education, Health Care, Permits, Cultur e,Heritage,Tourism,Agriculture and so on. Much work needs to be done to improve the applications for permits to reduce backlogs, confusion and frustration. It is imperative to look to the future to develop industry and business opportunities for the residents here and for those who want to relocate to South Glengarry. All of the departments within the Township including Council must be professional and treat the residents with the respect they deserve. The reverse also applies. Budgets must be adhered to so that proper planning doesn’t get sidetracked! I have the experience and time to dedicate to the position of Councillor.

Sam McDonell

Hanz Schulz

My name is Sam McDonell and I am seeking one of three seats as councilor in South Glengarry. I was born and raised on a Dairy & Cash Crop Farm in North Lancaster. After graduation from CharLan high school, I attended the University of Guelph’s Kemptville Campus where I obtained a Diploma in Agriculture, I then studied Business management at Olds College in Alberta. I am presently employed as an Account Manager for Maizex Seeds where I cover Eastern Ontario and Western Quebec. I feel the issues of South Glengarry include the way we administer the building code, as well as internet, cellular and natural gas coverage. Working closely with council and upper levels of government on these issues is essential. Makin our building department more welcoming is only one side of the issue; we need to lobby the provincial government to make the building code less onerous. To expand the broadband, cellular and natural gas will require government-assisted grants to encourage providers to offer more quality services. Water and Sewage cost increases are also a major issue, we need to soften the blow to our tax payers by revisiting the issue and finding a solution that not only council agrees to but one that keeps the residents satisfied. Several members of my extended family have served our Municipality and our Province in the political arena for many years and now I feel it is time for me to make that same commitment to serve my community in that role.

Hello I’m Hanz Schulz, Candidate for Councillor for the Township of South Glengarry. The Tires Winter isn’t a good time to have bald tires. If they’re completely worn out or don’t have a lot of tread left, it’s time to replace them. If they look good, have your tires rotated to extend their life. If you have to replace your tires, replace all four because your tires are only as good as the worst one. Coolant/Antifreeze We don’t put a lot of thought in to that odd smelling green stuff that cools our engines but over time it gets dirty and inefficient eventually damaging critical systems. Ideally, your radiator should be flushed and refilled with fresh coolant once per year but most of us don’t do that. How long has it been since you’ve flushed your radiator? You might want to get that done with your next oil change.

Windshield Wipers If they aren’t doing a good job with rain, they’re definitely not going to do well with sleet, snow, salt, and dirt. An all-purpose wiper will normally do the job but for those living in regions with an extra helping of winter, buy a higher priced winter wiper. Also don’t forget your washer fluid. The cheap, summer mixture will freeze just when you need it most so buy the higher quality washer fluid. Even better, purchase the winter mix that is guaranteed not to freeze.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Benson Centre attracted hundreds of hockey players and families on Saturday, Oct. 6 during Seaway Day. The 30th anniversary of the Seaway Valley Rapids saw six of eight Rapids teams play. At around 1 p.m., President Mark Desnoyers was recognized on centre ice for his 30 years of contribution to the association. Chancey Novosad and Logan Villeneuve presented him with some Rapids merchandise. A shout out was also given to all event sponsors. “I feel surprised; (this was) unexpected,” said Desnoyers. “I don’t do it for this (recognition) but it feels nice to be appreciated” Desnoyers has been a part of the Rapids since the association’s inception. He coached minor hockey in the past and is a Convener with the Hockey Eastern Ontario (HEO) League.

Purple pumpkins promote awareness for CAS Shawna O’Neill shawna.oneill@tc.tc

SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario – The Children’s Aid Society (CAS) of SDG, as well as partners across the province, want to promote everything purple throughout the month of October. As part of the Break the Silence campaign, Marlin’s Orchard will be selling purple pumpkins until Oct. 24 for $5. “We think it’s wonderful to partner up with an organization that’s making it aware that children have rights and those rights should not be abused,” said Diane Lunan, a family owner of Marlin’s Orchard. According to Julie Clement, HR Director with CAS, everyone in the community is encouraged to decorate their homes or offices purple throughout the month to raise awareness that every child has a right to safety and well-being. The campaign also promotes that it is the responsibility of adults and community services to help children and youth who need

support. Not only have purple pumpkins cropped up to spread awareness about the campaign but local businesses, including Riley’s, are showing their support by selling purple cupcakes. Baxtrom’s Your Independent Grocers is also selling purple shirts ahead of Dress Purple Day on Oct. 24, in which all schools, child care centres, community partners and organizations are encouraged to dress purple for Ontario Dress Purple Day. “Children’s Aid Society of SDG is only a phone call away. Every call is evaluated individually before any action is taken. We believe that children do best when they are at home with their family,” said Clement in a press release. Everyone is encouraged to #LetsGetPurple to show their support for the campaign. Cornwall Gives a Shirt

October 15-19, 2018 To contribute to Cornwall Gives a Shirt this year: 1. Gather up any clothing or other textile goods you would like to donate. 2. Place all of the clothing and other materials inside a bag. 3. Cut out or make a label that says “I give a shirt” and place at the curb during your normal garbage and recycling day. 4. Feel good about giving back to the community and helping reduce waste in Cornwall!

Did you know the City of Cornwall throws away 1.7 million kgs (1,700 tonnes) of clothing away every year? The City of Cornwall is currently trying to reduce its waste, and over 95% of the clothing thrown away can be reused or recycled. Last year the City launched Give a Shirt Campaign to help divert some of the textile material from the landfill. The Campaign diverted 2,300 kgs of textile waste in one week, helped reduce our waste, and helped our local charities stock up before Winter!

Cornwall Fire cannot contract out to part-time or volunteer services CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall Fire Master Plan (FMP) Committee heard this past Thursday that using part-time or volunteer firefighters could violate the collective agreement with Cornwall’s firefighters. The issue came up as committee member Councillor Mark MacDonald argued that automatic aid agreements with neighbouring municipalities would allow Cornwall to use the closest firefighters to a fire. “We can have automatic aid agreements which say we can use the closest firefighters,” MacDonald argued. “These agreements between municipalities have no conflict with collective agreements.” Fire Chief Pierre Voisine had a different interpretation of the collective agreement, one that was backed up by the City of Cornwall’s General Manager of Corporate Services Geoff Clarke. “My understanding is that I have to exhaust my resources. I can call in mutual aid at any point, but I have to pay all of my resources whether they come in or not,” Voisine explained. “I cannot enact any type of agreement unless I offer the work to my own personnel first.” Clarke agreed.

“If we skipped over our internal resources and they said that they could do the work, that would break the collective agreement,” he said. MacDonald had previously asserted on Twitter that automatic aid agreements and the content of the FMP would not break a collective agreement. “As per the FMP we are allowed to use volunteers “legally” through the FPPA Automatic Aid Agreements, it does not break any collective agreements #factnotopinion,” MacDonald tweeted. JD Sharpe, a labour relations lawyer with Emond Harnden retained by the City of Cornwall who was at the FMP meeting said that the FMP did not supersede any collective agreements. “The collective agreement is going to supersede and you’re going to have to pay whatever the collective agreement says you have to pay,” Sharpe explained. At the beginning of the meeting MacDonald argued that new dispatch systems could allow for faster response times, and quicker determinations if a firefighter was out of range. The current Cornwall Fire Service system can be used to send an automatic message out to off-duty Cornwall firefighters in case they are needed to help with a blaze. MacDonald feels that this system is “antiquated” and Mayor Leslie

MacDonald agreed and closed by saying that this last meeting was the best meeting of the FMP Committee to date. “I agree with the Mayor, it was the best FMP meeting so far, very informative. Great job by Chief Voisine. #cwlpoli,” MacDonald tweeted later. Go to www.cornwallseawaynews.com for the rest of this great story PLUS additional SN coverage.

If you ping somebody and if they’re out of the range, then they’re no use to you. It’s antiquated!” “If we ping them and they’re not available we have a right through automatic aid agreements of going with the closest firefighters,” MacDonald went on to say. “That is what we do,” responded Voisine, who explained that through mutual aid agreements, he was allowed to ask for help from neighbouring municipalities if all of his resources are exhausted. Thursday night’s meeting was the last for this FMP committee before the 2018 municipal election on Oct. 22. At the close of the meeting Chief Voisine recommended that the FMP be updated before things move along any further. “I believe for us to do this right, we need to update the FMP to reflect the changes that have occurred over the past five, six years,” he said. “There are a number of recommendations in here that are based on questionable information. When I first opened this I questioned if I wanted to come because of what I found in here.” Both the Mayor and Councillor Mark

Would you Give a Shirt? Shawna O’Neill

CORNWALL, Ontario – The City is hoping to collect over 5,000 lbs of shirts and other clothing items from Oct. 15 to 19 as part of the second annual I Give a Shirt campaign. The campaign, held during the 17th annual Waste Reduction Week, encourages residents to leave a bag of gently used clothing alongside their garbage that is to be picked up during the week of Oct. 15—even if it’s just a shirt. The clothing should be in a sealed, waterproof bag that is clearly labeled so it is not confused with garbage. Donations will be delivered to Baldwin House, The Salvation Army and Agapè Centre for resale purposes. “It’s trying to really get the community involved in thinking about how they can make a difference,” said Danielle Watson, Waste Management Supervisor for the City. “Instead of throwing something out of value, give it to someone else who may not have the value to

get those items” Danielle MacNeil, Public Educator and Volunteer Coordinator of Baldwin House, said that ideally clothing should be gently used but slight flaws like missing buttons will also be acceptable. Johanne Couture, Executive Director of Agapè Centre, reinforced that winter coats, blankets and clothing items for colder weather are the most desired donation items, given the change of season and an influx of summer clothing donations. According to Watson, textiles are the heaviest items in garbage pickup aside from organics. All community members who participate can claim a sticker for their recycling bin that prides their involvement. The City encourages using any clear label (as provided in this article). Cornwall spay & neuter clinic sees dozens of animals Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Welland and District OSPCA Mobile Spay & Neuter clinic stopped in Cornwall on Thursday, Oct. 4, 2018. On the first day of the clinic, 15 dogs and 18 cats were spayed and neutered. The clinic, which was based at the Civic Complex, planned to re-open on Friday and spay or neuter another

37 cats. Cornwall and area residents had an opportunity to register for this week’s clinic back in September. “We are the only licensed mobile clinic in the province of Ontario,” said Welland & District OSPCA Executive Director John Greer. The mobile clinic makes about 20 to 30 trips around the province every year. The clinic spays or neuters cats for $90 and

dogs for $150. For that price however, the pet does get a full-wellness treatment which includes the insertion of a tracking chip and vaccinations. Greer said that he was aware of the recent issues Cornwall has faced with feral cats and says that spay & neuter is the best solution to Cornwall’s population problem. “This is a great and innovative idea to deal with the feral cat problem,” said Greer.

Greer said that the clinic plans to return to Cornwall for a full five days in 2019, probably sometime in the Spring. “Now that we better understand the needs of the community we are better prepared to deal with them,” he explained. National Newspaper week Nick Seebruch

Last week was National Newspaper Week across Canada. Since last century, newspapers had become the main movers of change and the best ones, they held to account those who would abuse power and perpetuate injustice. In 1960 two Portuguese students were imprisoned by the Estado Novo dictatorship for seven years for having allegedly “drunk a toast to freedom”. The following year, British lawyer Peter Benenson published a letter in The Observer newspaper to draw attention to this injustice. That letter kicked off a movement known today as Amnesty International. Journalism and newspapers are no less powerful today, this is especially true for community newspapers. Where larger national publications struggle in the age of “Fake News” and social media, community newspapers stay relevant. Why do community newspapers still matter? Community newspapers stay relevant because every week we publish stories that matter to our readers that they cannot find anywhere else. While news about what Justin Trudeau is doing on the world stage might be interesting, it won’t affect you tomorrow. Even his recent signing of a new free trade agreement with the United States and Mexico won’t affect you tomorrow, but decisions made at city hall, they will and who will cover them but your local newspaper? You won’t hear about local events like this year’s Give a Shirt campaign or the United Way Wine & Cheese on the CBC, but you will see it in Cornwall Seaway News. When the police make a drug bust in Cornwall, we cover it, when part of Pitt St. is closed for construction (as it is this week) we cover it, and when a member of our community passes away, we will publish their death notice.

Over the years, things about newspapers have changed. For example, our Letters to the Editor section is no longer as robust as it used to be. People seem to be more content to make their opinions known in the comments section on social media. However, I feel that if people truly do have strong convictions that they want to share with their community, then they should write a Letter to the Editor to the local paper, just as Peter Benenson did 50 years ago. Social media doesn’t show all of your friends all of your comments, or even all of your posts, but our newspaper can give you a forum to inform the community about important issues. The average person on Facebook probably has about 400 friends? Cornwall Seaway News goes to nearly 40,000 homes every week! If you still don’t believe the value of community news, then consider this. During this municipal election we have published profiles of local candidates. I have received dozens of compliments about the fact that we collected and published that content. This tells me that not only are we well read, but also that we are providing a valuable service for our community. While the main focus of my job is editorial, I understand that local advertising is equally important. I would not be able to do this job that I love and share the stories of my hometown community without the great work that our fantastic sales team does every week. Advertising is an equal side of the coin to editorial because local newspaper advertising has just as an important impact on the community. Local newspapers give advertisers an effective forum with which to reach their customers. A local business cannot reach customers via a large national media outlet. Local businesses cannot even reach their customers as effectively via social media as they can through our paper. As I said earlier in this column, Cornwall Seaway News’ print edition reaches nearly 40,000

INNOVATIVE SOLUTIONS FOR RAIN GUTTERS

people every week which is not something that social media can guarantee a local business in Cornwall and the surrounding area. Community newspapers have a positive economic impact on their local area. A paper published this past summer by the University of Notre Dame shows that communities where no local newspaper exists have higher municipal government costs due to lack of scrutiny. I believe the same is true for local business. Without the platform that local newspapers can provide I believe that sales of locally owned businesses would decline. By the way, if any local business is interested in growing their client base, please email our Media Strategy Manager Patrick Larose at patrick.larose@tc.tc and he will work with you to give the best support that we can provide. As for myself. If you have a story you’d like to share, a Letter to the Editor you’d like to submit or an event you would like to see covered, then please email me at nicholas. seebruch@tc.tc Here’s to local news! I promise to keep on doing my best to serve our community responsibly. Clarification There seems to have been a few who did not understand the purpose of my column last week. who I felt disrespected Cornwall’s Mayor in the last Council meeting for a few reasons. The point of the column was that it did not matter what their names are. No one should disrespect the Mayor in a meeting. That is my opinion and I’m standing by it. In the past, when I have called out councillors in my column, like Mark MacDonald, I have named them, but that wasn’t the point of last week’s submission. Additionally, I felt it was unnecessary to publish their names in this case because their names and a video of the whole incident is readily available. The City of Cornwall publishes a webcast of every meeting on their website. If a reader is actively interested in local politics, then they can find that information easily for themselves. I don’t write columns for the sake of gossip, I write them to give a commentary on issues and that’s what last week’s column was. If any reader has any issues with anything I ever write, they can reach me at the email address in the by-line. If they would like to submit a critical Letter to the Editor, I would happily publish it.

Villages can be saved NUTHILLTOO@GMAIL.COM

Major cities of the world have iconic tourist attractions such as the Eiffel Tower, Leaning Tower of Pisa and Empire State Building. In emulation of them, small towns and villages rack their brains to come up with something that will put them on the map and bring in the tourist dollars. This summrr ones we saw include Wawa’s towering Canada Goose, White River Junction’s “Winnie the Pooh” memorabilia, Nipigon’s “Paddle to the Sea” theme, Abbotsford’s monument to the Raspberry,

Hope’s 82 chainsaw figures, Mattawa’s Big Joe Mufferaw, Vegreville’s Pysanki and Sudbury’s Big Nickel. Thinking back to Ethelbert and its decline, a missed opportunity comes to mind. In 1975, Air Canada was disposing of its fleet of Vickers Viscount turboprop airliners. A restaurateur in Teulon, Manitoba purchased one of them, CF-THB. That particular aircraft made its first flight in 1957, and the last of its 37,498 landings in 1974. Its new owner took delivery of the grounded aircraft at Winnipeg airport in 1975. Unfortunately the plan of making it a drawing card for his Ray’s Restaurant did not materialize. In 1982 aviation enthusiast Don Fyk eventually acquired THB from its interim owner. The 41,000

Trappings of success festival here and a venue for soirées there. Cornwall city councillors, both current and hopeful, need to recognize that needs are a priority over wants and personal gratification (Abraham Maslow, “A Theory of Human Motivation,” Psychological Review 50 (1943): 370-396). Rather than trying to buy the trappings of a successful community, we can realize our potential by first establishing a foundation that ensures well-being, and invest instead in the social and economic infrastructure of roads, sewer and water, transit, internet/WiFi, jobs, daycare, affordable housing, public safety, access to health services, and green public space. Our elected representatives are expected to put and keep our house in order, not undermine it with vain pursuits ahead of real and present needs – the needs of the “family” they’ve been given the duty and honour to serve. for a secondary class or feature as a bus tour interest stop. Baba’s Corner Store could cater to such groups. A farmers’ market could offer fresh produce and home-baked goods. That shiny airliner could have made Ethelbert a travellers’ destination. The nearby historical museum could have become a resource for genealogical research. The village’s Ukrainian Catholic church could offer interpretive tours, to explain the tenets of the church, and its distinctive architecture. It could have happened. It still could happen. It might happen. Something like that has to happen if our villages are to survive. Tell me, what attraction could your village come u with to help it survive?

Dear Editor, If you didn’t have enough food for each plate at the family’s kitchen table, wouldn’t it be reckless to head out and drop your wallet on a concert or show? Yet this is what proponents of a multi-million dollar arts and culture centre would counsel us to do. The Cornwall Agape Centre serves one meal each day to 165 people. Some 600 families use their food bank each month and the St. Vincent de Paul at St. Francis Parish assists 400 families each month. (S-F, Community Editorial Board, July 27, 2018). This is but a small sample, suggesting that those numbers and more also struggle to keep a decent roof over their heads. These are men, women, and children within our community – our families. The dire straits in which many Cornwall families find themselves, and the city’s declining economy, will not be fixed by a rib

pound aircraft was eventually towed about 20 kilometers past Ethelbert, to the vestige of a village that is Garland. Fyk’s busyness of earning a living interfered with his dream of making THB a cottage of sort. The Viscount has become but a folly, languishing in an open field, suffering from the harsh extremes of prairie climate and periodic visits by thieves and vandals. Just think: if the plane had been installed in downtown Ethelbert instead. In sight of “Baba’s Corner Store”, accompanied by appropriate interpretation, with guided tours offered, it would have been safeguarded and might have attracted tourists to the village. What a marvellous place to hold a young child’s birthday party, conduct a science outing

Koala Place finds new home Shawna O’Neill shawna.oneill@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Koala Place has moved into a new, more inviting environment at 117 First St. downtown. The organization held an open house on Tuesday, Oct. 2. “It’s homey and it’s a little more comfortable,”

said Diane Plourde, Executive Director of Victim Services and Koala Place. “We are probably in a better location for the bus routes and everyone knows the downtown area.” Koala Place, which was previously located on Pitt St., offers wrap-around services to child and youth victims or witnesses of physical abuse,

sexual abuse and maltreatment. The organization offers services and referrals while providing support to families who are navigating the system. Working closely with the Children’s Aid Society, local police and Akwesasne Child and Family Services, children are always interviewed by plainclothes officers and can be accompanied by Joy, the facility’s support dog. “When you are dealing with any victim, you really want to reduce anxiety,” said Plourde. “Sometimes just your environment can make a difference. So, we are hoping that this environment will be much more conducive to the work we do and Koala Place and it’s better for the client being served.” Plourde is happy about the relocation as the new space houses a number of programs and organizations. Victim Services was previously located on Rosemount Ave. “Our goal is to do things differently and make sure we work in collaboration in more of a multidisciplinary team to support the families,” said Plourde. “It’s really about a new way of approaching when children and youth are abused and it’s about working together…it’s less intrusive and maybe less anxiety producing; easier for parents to come here,” she added.

SALE OF LAND BY PUBLIC TENDER

April 06, 1937 – September 25, 2018

THE CORPORATION OF THE TOWNSHIP OF NORTH STORMONT

It is with profound sorrow that we share the sudden passing of our beloved mother, Jacqueline Séguin (née Lavigne) at the age of 81 years, at home on September 25, 2018 in Cornwall, Ontario. Darling sweetheart and wife of 59 years to our late father, René E. Séguin. Our cherished and devoted mother leaves behind to mourn we three adoring children Donald, Carole Sauvé (Michel) and Marc (Ellen) all of Cornwall. Beloved Memère to her two cherished grand-children who gave her never-ending bountiful joy & pride —Chantal Séguin (Ottawa) and Mathieu Séguin (Kingston). Jacqueline loved her daughter-in-law Ellen and son-in-law Mike as though they were her own children and they too will deeply miss her. She is survived by her loving petite soeur Denise Lemire of Châteauguay, Québec. Jacqueline was predeceased by her sisters & their spouses, Aldéa Tessier 1926-2013 (Romuald), Cécile Cousineau 1929-2018 (Rodolphe) and by her brothers & their spouses, Simon Lavigne 1927-1985 (Yvette Pilon) and Lucien Lavigne 1932-2008 (Laurette Leger) and by her dear brother-in-law Guy Lemire. She was also predeceased by her parents Samuel Lavigne (1902-1984) and Alice (née Marchand, 1902-1969). She will be fondly remembered by her surviving 20 nieces and nephews and their families including her Godchild, Diane Lalonde (née Cousineau) and her dear lifelong friend, Mrs. Annette Leroux.

Take Notice that tenders are invited for the purchase of the lands described below and will be received until 3:00 p.m. local time on November 8, 2018, at the North Stormont Township Office, 15 Union St., Berwick Ontario. Except as follows, the municipality makes no representation regarding the title to, crown interests or any other matters relating to the lands to be sold. Responsibility for ascertaining these matters rests with the potential purchasers.

We celebrated our mother’s life on October 1st, 2018 with a private wake and Christian Memorial Service officiated by Deacon Pierre Aubé at Lahaie and Sullivan Cornwall Funeral Home, 7th St. W. We are forever grateful to all those who showed Mom and our family kindnesses especially in these last three months; it never went unappreciated. A woman drove to the local grocery store to buy a turkey to prepare for Thanksgiving dinner. She was picking through the frozen turkeys, but she couldn’t find one big enough for her entire family. So, she asked a stock boy, “Excuse me, do these turkeys get any bigger?” The stock boy replied, “No ma’am, they’re dead.”
