CORNWALL, Ontario - A campaign to draw awareness to the alarming number of missing and murdered Canadian aboriginal women has grown from the home of a Cornwall resident to become an international phenomenon.

Holly Jarrett is spearheading the viral ‘Am I Next’ campaign and said the media reaction to her message has gone global.

Media requests from national broadcasters like CTV and CBC, coupled with interviews by the Associated Press in Washington, the BBC and even Al-Jazeera have given her the tools she needs to educate the public on the epidemic of abuse and neglect that aboriginal women in Canada often face.

"This is exactly what I wanted," she said in an interview. "I didn’t think it would reach these proportions, but it’s what we need."

Her campaign is a simple one: women are asked to take a photo of themselves holding a sign that reads, "#AmINext," which Jarrett wants to see bloom into a national discussion on the issue of aboriginal women who have disappeared or been murdered.

There are 1,181 cases of missing and murdered aboriginal women nationwide.

Jarrett, who has lived in Cornwall for three years but was born in Goose Bay, Nfld., is the cousin of Loretta Saunders, an Inuit woman from

Labrador who was found dead in a wooded area off the Trans-Canada Highway in New Brunswick, two weeks after she was reported missing from her Halifax apartment in February.

Jarrett said Saunders was in the midst of writing a university thesis on the plight of aboriginal women when she became part of the statistics.

Shortly after Saunder’s death Jarrett began an online petition to seek support for her desire for a public inquiry on the subject - no fewer than 7,000 people signed it overnight, she said.

"Now that we have the public’s attention, my hope is that it will create enough awareness so that when people Google this, or my name, they will get some information," she said. "The next step is to have a national public inquiry."

But that might be easier said than done.

Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the federal government have been unwilling to sanction such an event.

"I want to meet with Stephen Harper," said Jarrett. "But I don’t think he will do that, because he’s pretty stubborn."

Jarrett said her online campaign has plenty of staying power, and she doesn’t plan on abandoning her quest anytime soon.

She has designs on creating a documentary on the subject, and has booked flights across the country to document the plight of aboriginal women through first-hand accounts.

Baril, architect of Cornwall Royals, passes away at 78 the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association (CAHA) which ended the long-standing practice of NHL teams owning junior clubs and their players. The Royals became part of the new Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

Baril and Lascelle gave up control of the team to a group of local businessmen. Baril remained as general manager. At a news conference to unveil the new-look team, Baril said his goal was to bring a Memorial Cup to Cornwall within three years. A lot of people laughed. But Baril got the last laugh when the team won its first of three Memorial Cups in 1972.

In the 1970-71 season Baril relinqushed the GM role to coach Jim Larin but remained as a

director. The next season Larin hired Orval Tessier to coach. Baril eventually parted company with the Royals to become general manager of the Hull Festivals.

But the Baril connection to the Royals wasn’t over. His son, Pierre, was drafted out of the CJHL by the club in 1981. In his third season and final season with the Royals, Pierre was appointed team captain.

Strange how life works. If Red Lascelle hadn’t walked into that hardware store back in 1963 to ask a guy he didn’t know if he wanted to buy a piece of a rag-tag hockey team that drew about 100 fans, Cornwall’s name would not be on the Memorial Cup.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A new charging station that will allow owners of an electric car to travel hundreds of kilometres on little to no fossil fuel opened in Cornwall recently.

Tesla Motors opened one of two Ontario charging stations in the Seaway City Thursday at the Ramada Inn in Cornwall.

MacDonald calls out candidates - wants more cohesiveness CORNWALL, Ontario - The first salvo in the ‘official’ campaign for city hall was fired, perhaps unsurprisingly, by candidate Mark MacDonald Friday afternoon.

MacDonald has held more media availabilities than any other individual running for council, and Friday railed his opponents to find common ground as the campaign officially got underway with the close of nominations at 2 p.m.

Shortly after the deadline MacDonald was outside city hall suggesting candidates for council need to start working together now, not after polls close Oct. 27.

"To find out where we disagree is easy," he said. "We need to set out some clear objectives."

MacDonald, a former city councillor, took specific aim at development along Montreal Road, in particular the Port Theatre. MacDonald believes city hall has a role to play in easing restrictions concerning licensed events at the aged movie house.

"A new council will recognize the Port Theatre as a building that is historically significant and we will work with the Port to

obtain the required capacity they need for LCBO events," MacDonald said, reading from a prepared statement that he wants other candidates to sign and support.

No other candidates were at his Friday afternoon press conference – attended by two journalists.

Jeff Brunet, a local promoter, said licensed events at the Port have been hindered because of code restrictions against the number of people that could be safely accommodated in the theatre.

Brunet said only 114 may be allowed in the facility for licensed events, like concerts, and building officials want the size of the antique bathrooms in the theatre enhanced.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The roar of engines echoed for miles as dozens of motorcyclists gathered Saturday, September 13 for the fifth Cruise for Hospice.

Over 80 bikers clad in leather, Harley Davidson gear, and colourful tattoos filled the Royal Canadian Legion parking lot in Cornwall.

The riders embraked on a scenic ride across the region, through Morrisburg, Iroquois, Burritts Rapids, South Mountain, Martintown, and back to the Legion.

Chris Ruhl, a member of the Seaway Lions Club in Cornwall and Stormont, was back for the second time to support the cause and enjoy the fellowship.

"It’s a great ride for a great cause," said Ruhl.

Last year, the event raised $12,000 for Hospice Cornwall.

The hospice’s annual operational budget is $1.4 million. Collette and her team of volunteers must raise $500,000 of it.

Collette said events organized by the community are the lifeblood of the hospice.

Hundreds lace up for 'Terry Fox Run' ADAM BRAZEAU adam.brazeau@tc.tc CORNWALL, Ontario - Inspired by her oneyear-old daughter Emma’s courageous battle with cancer, and the unwavering support of her two best friends, Shonna Atchison embodied the fighting spirit of Terry Fox’s Marathon of Hope.

Atchison ran alongside Martintown’s Leesa Jarvo and Shirley MacDonell, of Williamstown, at the 34th annual Terry Fox Run Day in Cornwall on September 14. The trio of Upper Canada District School Board teachers joined hundreds of other runners, walkers, cyclists, and pets to help raise tens of thousands of dollars for cancer research.

Atchison’s daughter, Emma McQuaig, was diagnosed with retinoblastoma, a rare eye cancer, last year around Christmas.

Little Emma’s right eye was removed and replaced with a prosthetic eye.

Atchison hopes her left eye, which currently has 20/20 vision, will have a full recovery as doctors at SickKids in Toronto work to remove any tumors.

All three friends participate annually at their school’s run. But this was Atchison’s first time around the scenic Cornwall course along the St. Lawrence River.

“More so than ever, this year it’s real. It hits home. I mean it’s always been important, but when it’s in your home it’s a little more intense I guess,” said Atchison.

MacDonell considered her friend’s strength as

a mother throughout the uphill battle with the disease an inspiration. Her bet is on Emma, who she described as a little fighter.

“Emma’s going to kick it in the butt,” said MacDonell.

The Stormont Sea Cadet Band opened the ceremonies with a stirring rendition of the national anthem in honour of Fox, the Canadian hero.

MP Guy Lauzon and MPP Jim McDonell followed up with a quick speech to commend the organizers and volunteers for their efforts, as well as the community for their support.

Despite losing his first wife to cancer 27 years ago, Lauzon expressed his hope that a cure is within reach.

“Terry Fox would not have lost his leg now.

That’s how far the research in the cure for cancer is coming,” said Lauzon.

Echoing his sentiments, Atchison added: “To see the treatment that Emma’s received and how far the treatment for her cancer has come, you know the money is going to good places and it’s helping a lot of people.”

Josée Sauvé, event organizer, couldn’t agree more.

She resurrected the local run when she grabbed the reins nine years ago. And Sauvé is proud to report that this year beat all records.

A total of $25,788.70 was raised thanks to 357 participants.

“Never in my wildest dreams did I imagine today turning out like it did,” said Sauvé.

CORNWALL, Ontario - On what was arguably a bright spring day 100 years ago a woman from Brockville entered the Cornwall House of Refuge and began what remains a mystery to this day.

The woman was single mother Theresa Rice, formerly a resident of the Brockville Asylum, who brought with her a two-month old child Hazel.

In just over a year Hazel was adopted, by local couple John and Elizabeth Hollister.

What ultimately happened to both the baby, and her biological mother, has fallen into mystery and local historian Sara Lauzon wants to find out.

Lauzon has made a passion out of diving into the mysteries of Cornwall’s House of Refuge, a place where the mentally ill and physically disabled called home - sometimes for their entire lives.

Lauzon said telling the stories of these people, who are often left in the shadows while the spotlight shines on more popular politicians, athletes and philanthropists, has become an allconsuming joy.

"As depressing as it is, it is still Cornwall’s history," she said. "These are the people who defined the 20th Century best."

Hazel Hollister was adopted on March 15, 1915, less than a year after she and her biological mother Theresa Rice appeared at the House of Refuge on what is now Eleventh Street in Cornwall.

Lauzon said information she has uncovered indicates Theresa spent the next 30 years at the house, but the record becomes murky after that.

"I don’t know if she spent her whole life there, or was transferred to the Glen-Stor-Dun Lodge when (the House of Refuge) was closed.

I can’t find anything, which is rare."

As for Hazel, Lauzon has been able to uncover records out of Brockville that suggest a woman with the same name was on the voters list in 1957, 1972 and 1974 and worked as a secretary and stenographer.

Is it the same Hazel who was adopted in Cornwall in 1915? Lauzon doesn’t know for sure.

Sara Lauzon works on some records concerning another mystery of long lost "I can assume she’s the same person...but I Cornwall residents of the House of Refuge. don’t like to assume," she said.

Lauzon is hoping members of the public, or perhaps distant relatives, will have some live.ca.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Hundreds of Cornwall and Area Housing residents area being forced to shell out for new, expensive portable air conditioning units thanks to a policy change concerning the window machines.

Peggy Fulton, manager of the Cornwall and Area Housing Corporation, confirmed in an interview letters will soon be distributed to residents advising them that window units will no longer be allowed next year.

The reason is a window unit fell from an eighth floor apartment earlier this summer, crashing to the ground.

No one was injured, but the incident has prompted a decision to mandate the use of so-called “portable” A/C units in CAHC highrises, while residents in townhouses must keep their machines on the first floor.

on a fixed disability pension that pays her about $1,100 a month.

“What are we supposed to do?” she railed. “I can’t do the heat.

“And I’ve heard those (portable units) are loud and they leak.”

Murad said she is planning to start a petition against the decision once the CAHC officially notifies residents.

Fulton was asked if the corporation could allow window units, but inspect them to make sure they are properly installed.

“We have 1,600 units,” she responded.

“There’s no way we can go out to each and every one and do an inspection.

“I feel bad about it, but we have to protect all of our tenants.”

Fulton said the CAHC is letting residents know now, so they can pick up a unit on sale.

Lisa Murad, a resident of the CAHC highrise on Sixth Street, said she can’t afford a new portable air-conditioning unit.

Residents, though, are steaming - and it’s not just because their apartments are heating up.

Lisa Murad, a resident of the CAHC high-rise on Sixth Street, said she can’t afford a new portable air-conditioning unit. The machines typically start at around $350.

Instead of being in a window the machines roll around on wheels inside a room.

Murad said the corporation’s residents are being punished for one incident.

“Right now I’m looking at my thermometer and it says 81 degrees in here,” she said. “By the end of the day it will be up to 90. I can’t take that.”

Of the 20 other candidates I see six, maybe seven legitimate contenders amidst of field of others who haven’t paid their dues or lack the experience to be given such an influential job.

In no particular order candidates to watch in this election include Guy St-Jean, Justin Towndale, Todd Bennett, Alyssa Blais, Mark MacDonald and Claude McIntosh.

I’m not saying they’re all going to win, obviously, but this race looks be a case of half a dozen people with a shot at filling as many as three available spots at the table.

Towndale offers one of the younger perspectives of the councillors who have put their name forward. He’s also got some experience, after working as a staffer for political heavyweights at Queen’s Park. He has yet to make any public comments, outside of issuing some press material, so seeing him live will offer some insights.

Guy St-Jean is someone who appears to have a solid business head on his shoulders. He operates his own vintage furniture operation in Cornwall, and has made some cogent arguments already for change at city hall – including taking the city to task for its recent decision to shelve an east-end development.

MacDonald wants his old job back. The former city councillor has held more press engagements than any other candidate to date, and I think it was a mistake for him to run for mayor years ago. His job is that of councillor, and like him or not, MacDonald gives the appearance of someone who will fight for constituents while keeping his colleague son their toes.

If anyone deserves a seat at the table, by virtue of putting in the man hours, it’s Bennett.

Like my old high school history teacher, Bill Metcalfe, used to say: “You can’t tell the players without a program.”

The numbers alone suggest the 2014 municipal election here in Fun City could be a dog-eat-dog battle, with 29 councillor candidates vying for just 10 seats at the council table.

Reality, though, is likely to be much different.

There will be one new face because Denis Thibault won’t be returning to council, deciding to end a successful run at city hall.

The balance of the incumbents are running against 20 others who want to change the political landscape in Cornwall.

How successful they will be remains to be seen, but if I had to look into my crystal ball I can see at least two others being shown the door Oct. 27. Maybe three, depending on how angry voters are on election day.

At the risk of singling out specific individuals (anytime you do that it has the appearance of an attack as opposed to opinion) I see a steep challenge ahead for incumbents including longtime councillors like Syd Gardiner, Andre Rivette and perhaps even Denis Carr.

When you have been around for as long as those councillors there is often a challenge to remain relevant in the face of new people who bring fresh ideas.

On the flipside, have rookie councillors like Gerry Samson, David Murphy and Maurice Dupelle done enough to secure re-election?

Based on the track record of council, and some of the sentiment I am hearing from voters, I can see as many as three incumbents cast aside by voters, which begs the question: who will

Blais is viewed in many circles as an anomaly of sorts. Some of the labels she’s been plagued with, by virtue of some unfair online vitriol, hasn’t done her campaign any favours, and the fact that her job as executive director of the Agape Centre means her actions get scrutinized even more. But she is a champion for young female leaders thanks to her ‘Politigal’ conference and I’m eager to see how voters respond to that side of her campaign.

McIntosh might just win a spot thanks to name recognition alone. Very few, if any, of the candidates have his connections in the city, both personal and professional. I’m hearing friends, and even strangers, are offering support now that the campaign has begun in earnest. But what do rank and file voters think of his decision to run? It’s a question I can’t wait to see answered.

On the mayoral side it’s a two-horse race between incumbent Bob Kilger and former councillor Leslie O’Shaughnessy, the frontrunners. The early returns suggest Kilger is going to run on his record, while O’Shaughnessy promises a bombshell Friday night at his launch party.

Long shot Jamie Gilcig hasn’t got a prayer.

Milnes claims stake in river institute heritage Dear editor: I don’t normally write letters to the newspapers, it was usually left to my husband, but I am so angry at your article ‘River Institute: “It started as a dream”’ that I feel obliged to set the record straight. Yes, indeed, it started as a dream, not of the people pictured in the article but of one man, John Milnes, when he was the Chair of the Remedial Action Plan Public Advisory Committee in the 1990s. I know for I accompanied him on his many meetings with Members of the Federal Government, not least of whom was Jean Charest, the then Minister of the Environment and to the press conferences held to keep the public aware of the efforts being made to bring a prestigious educational facility to the City. I have in front of me a copy of an article in the Standard Freeholder, dated

January 9th, 1991, describing one of these press conferences, which states “Both MP Bob Kilger and MPP John Cleary were on hand for the press conference, applauding John Milnes’ initiative and promising their full support . . . .”

I could say so much more but, obviously, am restricted by space allowed. I challenge anyone who desires to know the truth to visit our home and see the laminated cuttings on the wall of John’s study – they tell the real story. Over the years John may have caused many ripples within the political scene in our area but he certainly does not deserve the flagrant contempt shown by the pretenders in the photograph accompanying the article.

Council vote left many upset Dear editor: At a time where change seems to be the hot topic throughout the city regarding the upcoming Municipal Election, I am extremely upset with the vote that occurred during Monday’s City Council meeting regarding a project to build a multi-unit complex at 1154 Montreal Road, which would also have included a strong commercial component.

On August 18, 2014, our city Councilors, who also happen to be the city’s PAC (Planning Advisory Hearing Committee) left the meeting satisfied. They approved a project that should have only required a “formality vote” to implement the motion. I personally, am shocked by

future developers wanting to invest in Cornwall – they will simply walk away and their investors will loose interest and choose to invest elsewhere! This vote goes against everything that I believe in for the city as, this should have been a formality. If anyone had concerns when attending the PAC meeting, they should have voiced their concerns and asked for any clarifications before moving the voting process forward!

On a final note, I respect our Mayor Bob Kilger and will say that he should not have voted on the motion if he wasn’t in a position to do so. As a mayor, he may have had other engagements on August 18, 2014 but to

publicaly say that he could not support the motion because he was not present at the PAC meeting – is unacceptable to me! As our mayor, he needs to be informed and take responsibility. If a motion is going to be voted on at the next City Council meeting, then he should have obtained the minutes or any documents necessary to make a sound decision. He voted against a needed project for growth and revitalization of “Le Village”. On Monday evening, I felt let down as many others in our city did as well.

South Stormont News - a disquieting shift with a decided and somewhat disquieting shift in content, one that should be cause for concern with local ratepayers. It seems the news has taken a sharp political turn, highlighted by a front-page article that can only be described as a veiled attempt to promote a specific candidate. One wonders how the other candidates view such a blatant political bias and perhaps, should demand equal time.

The political bias goes even further as the paper names the two mayoralty candidates.

That in itself is fine. However within the description, which has no comment about the

of its contractual term and there is little point in rehashing the issue. That said, when the contract comes up for renewal, let us hope that the elected officials of the day examine the publication closely in terms of value for cost and then, determine whether or not budgeted dollars would be better spent elsewhere.

The region’s mainstream print and electronic media have faithfully published the township bulletin and to me, that should suffice as the most fiscally sensible approach.

Ironically, she was the lone member of council to oppose and to vote against the contract. It might be suggested that the editorial comments about her are nothing but coincidence.

Perhaps, but one is left to wonder if she will experience an additional backlash from other self interested sources. Time will tell.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The words leap off the page and in your face. Try your hand at the energetic art form of slam poetry with twelve of the nation’s leading competitive performers next week.

Your Arts Council (YAC) Cornwall & The Counties, Aultsville Theatre, and the St. Lawrence College (SLC) - Cornwall Student Union will be hosting a poetry slam and poetry slam workshop Saturday, September 27.

Aspiring poets and pros of prose can expect a hands-on workshop broken into two parts. First, participants are taught how to write spoken word, and then they’re given the tools needed to perform in and host a poetry slam competition of their own.

“The objective is for Cornwall to put in a slam team to compete in regional and even national competitions,” said Bruce Davis, executive director of YAC. YAC decided to host the event in the college

On September 15th, 2014 members of the Cornwall Community Police Service assumed custody of the woman from Surete du Quebec as she was being held in custody on the strength of Cornwall’s warrant. She was transported to police headquarters and held for a bail hearing.

ASSAULT An 18-year-old Cornwall man was arrested on September 13th, 2014 and charged with assault. It is alleged that in the early morning hours of September 13th, 2014 while at a local bar the man punched his 19-year-old girlfriend in the face. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued.

During their investigation the man was located in the area of McConnell Avenue and Ninth Street. He was taken into custody, charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on October 21st, 2014. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.

MISCHIEF A 31-year-old Westport man was arrested on September 15th, 2014 and charged with mischief. It is alleged that on September 15th, 2014 during an argument with his 40-year-old girlfriend the man damaged a lamp and a window. Police were contacted and an investigation ensued.

During their investigation the man was taken into custody, charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on October 7th, 2014. His name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.

WARRANT Marie Doiron, 48 of Cornwall was arrested on September 15th, 2014 on the strength of a warrant. It is alleged that on July

pub, The Shark Tank, because this type of event lends itself nicely to college culture, even through it’s open to everyone 16 years of age and older.

“Students really seem to dig this kind of event so it made sense to partner with the college on this one,” said Davis.

Sean O’Gorman, originally from Finch, North Stormont, will be taking the stage. In 2011, he was second place in the rankings for the Most Valuable Poet of the Year award at the Canadian Festival of Spoken Word.

The workshop runs from 2:30 to 4:30 p.m. in room 342 at the college, which is located at 2 St. Lawrence Drive. Admission is $10 (YAC members/$5 - SLC students/$8). Only 25 workshop seats available.

YAC will cap off the workshop with a poetry slam competition from 6 to 8 p.m. Admission is $10 at the door (YAC members/$5 - SLC students/$8).

North Dundas mayor acclaimed for second term

CORNWALL, Ontario - Duncan’s back in.

North Dundas Mayor Eric Duncan, 26, won his second term Friday in an unopposed race.

"It’s a humbling experience to have four of our five council members acclaimed this term," said Duncan, in an interview with Seaway News.

"I like to think that there is a general respect and support for both our tone and our direction going forward. So we plan to keep it going."

All three councillors, like Duncan, won by acclamation.

At 19, he was elected as a North Dundas city councillor. In 2010, Duncan became one of the youngest mayor’s in Canada’s history.

The Winchester resident was appointed the warden of the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry (SDG) in December 2013 - the youngest in its 162-year history.

"Congrats to my colleagues Al Armstrong, John Thompson, and Tony Fraser on their acclamation as Councillors, and all the best to Deputy Mayor Gerry Boyce in his contest," he added.

O’Shaughnessy promises tell-all at Friday campaign launch

CORNWALL, Ontario - Former city councillor Leslie O’Shaughnessy is going public with his reasons for leaving the municipal body during this term.

O’Shaughnessy, who now wants to be mayor, is hosting a campaign launch Friday at 7 p.m. at the Ramada Inn. In a media release sent Monday evening O’Shaughnessy indicated he would “provide more information” on why he left council in the middle of the last term.

When he left council O’Shaughnessy indicated that he resigned because, among other things, he claims he was lied to, and that information pertinent to political decisions was wilfully withheld.

The litany of accusations also centred on a 2011 whistleblowing case where the city was found guilty of retaliating against one of its employees and slapped with a $15,000 fine.

O’Shaughnessy further accused the city of spending too much time deliberating issues behind closed doors, and failing to record such dealings via adminstrative reports and the like.

He is taking on incumbent Bob Kilger and political rookie Jamie Gilcig.

Hospital’s new telemetry system doesn’t miss a beat CORNWALL, Ontario - A new telemetry system at the Cornwall Community Hospital is helping to keep a patient’s best interest at heart.

The hospital has introduced a new system that allows a patient with potential heart problems to be continuously monitored throughout the entire building via a wireless network.

Telemetry allows doctors and nurses to monitor a patient’s heart rate and rhythm via a portable unit attached to their chest and examined from a central nursing station monitor.

“The key,” said Mike Kroon, the manager of the hospital’s critical care unit, “is that we can obtain instant, real-time information with no breaks in data.”

The device itself is the size of a standard smartphone, with a display screen and five wires connected to patches which pick up signals from the heart before sending them directly to the monitor. The monitor then displays the electrical signal as a picture of a patient’s heartbeat.

The new telemetry device shows the patient’s heart rhythm right on the screen and is transported in a clear bag that is worn around the neck so it will not interfere with the usual routine and care provided during hospitalization.

Doctors usually recommend using telemetry when a patient has an arrhythmia (irregular heartbeat), or to monitor how the heart responds to new medication. One of the major advantages is that the most responsible nurse or physician can detect emergent medical issues before they become a problem.

After going live at the end of May, the new system has already begun to show off its many improvements. Because the old device had to be removed and then reattached to allow patients to visit different areas in the hospital, many of them would remain in their area until it was time for discharge.

“We know walking promotes engagement and quicker recovery time so having technology that permits patient mobility while ensuring total observation of the activity of the heart, is highly preferable to having a patient confined to a bed,” said Jeanette Despatie, hospital CEO.

Cornwall’s council currently represents the city in an ‘at-large’ capacity, but a ward system would see councillors elected to represent specific regions of the city.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A new version of an old debate is surfacing early in this election campaign - a ward system for Cornwall.

The system, in place decades ago in the Seaway City, was reintroduced as some food for political thought by city councillor candidate Brock Frost, who suggests it’s time to revisit the idea.

“In a city like Cornwall, where demographics are diverse and culture is ever-changing, a ward system may prove to be a better form of political

from different wards in the city, while another two would be elected at-large, as well as the mayor.

But there are opponents to the idea.

“You could lose out on a lot of good candidates,” said incumbent councillor Glen Grant, who said the ward system doesn’t make sense for small communities like Cornwall. “I think it’s been proven in the past they don’t work well for the whole city.”

Grant said the first year he was elected there were no fewer than five councilors living in the same neighbourhood. Under a ward system, there may have only been one or two of those

five elected.

Councillor candidate Greg Kielec agrees a ward system is best suited for larger centres like Toronto or Ottawa.

“I know they had this problem in one of the former townships,” he said. “There was no cohesiveness. Everyone was fighting for their own (ward) instead of the township as a whole.”

Frost concedes there are issues with a ward system, but argues the idea should at least be discussed. There are 29 individuals running for 10 council spots. Frontrunners Bob Kilger, former councillor Leslie O’Shaughnessy and long shot Jamie Gilcig are running for mayor.

“Being on bass for Yates allows me to express a stronger energy, and emotion, for the music itself,” he said.

It was Contant’s first time back on drums in front of a live audience since their last gig at Bar Billiard Alexis in St-Jérôme, QC., in Feb. 2011. His bandmates were blown away during the two practices they managed to sneak in before the show on Sept. 13. Not a spot of rust.

The multi-talented performer has a small home studio to keep the music alive, but he considers it mostly a hobby unless he’s with 17 Yates.

The band will also be tearing the mosh pit to shreds at the annual Spirit of a Season Christmas concert in Cornwall being held at Vu Nightspot.

Fun fact: Their catchy moniker is actually the address of the original drummer’s house (Aaron Campeau).

CORNWALL, Ontario - 17 Yates is back in town.

The heavy metal foursome reunited on the Lola’s Pub & Grub stage Saturday, September 13.

Despite having never released an album, an EP or even a single, over 150 people packed the pub for their return.

“I just want to start with 17 Yates never broke up - we just took a four-year vacation,” said frontman Ben ‘Dynamite’ Poitras.

Taylor ‘Bone’ Bingley couldn’t agree more.

He said being the band’s full-time guitarist is difficult when you co-ordinate shows at European festivals for Paris-based metal outfit Gojira.

This summer, he toured with Metallica before hitting stops like Portugal and Istanbul with the all-mighty Megadeth.

“I think I have been back and forth across the Atlantic (Ocean) four times in just a couple of months,” said Bingley.

In October, he heads back out with Gojira on the second leg of their North American tour, which stops in Montreal at Metropolis on Oct. 29.

The venues have changed from local to international for Bingley, but in his hometown it’s still the same ol’ song.

“17 Yates isn’t just a band,” he said. “It represents a brotherhood of our childhood friends that have stuck together for almost 20 years.”

Their musical roots in the city were firmly planted as teenagers.

In high school, Bingley played with Poapst in the band Hydrofiend. He also used to jam with Contant in Outer Heaven and Emoceans Apart.

Alternatively, Contant performed in local bands Mayfair and Shuteye.

Poapst recorded a demo album for Poitras’ band, Hung By The Flag, years ago. The duo are still connected musically aside from 17 Yates as the lead singer and guitarist for BoozeHound, a rock fusion band working on their second independently released album.

For Poapst, playing electric guitar in BH is more of a natural fit as a musician, since the sixstring was his first instrument. Before he arrived, the band had a revolving door of bassists.

Frank Shaver Trophy returns from the dustbin of local history CORNWALL, Ontario - As the winter snow methodically melted away and tulips started to poke their collective heads through the spongy ground, one of the oldest hockey trophies in the region was being hugged by a sweaty group of plucky pucksters called the St. Andrews Saints.

It was March 1968 and the new champions of the long-established Longue Sault Hockey League were the newest custodians of the Frank Shaver Trophy.

They didn’t know it at the time, but the Saints were to become the last team to hoist the fabled prize, first presented to the Aultsvlle Hockey Club in 1932 by its namesake, an Aultsville general store merchant and member of Parliament. The Aultsville club won it again in 1934 and in 1945.

The Longue Sault Hockey League didn’t have a post-1968 season as it slipped into the dustbin of time.

As time marched on the whereabouts of the trophy became a mystery.

Then, not long ago, it resurfaced after falling into the hands of retired teacher Kenny

MacDonald of Williamstown. The whereabouts of the trophy came up in a chance conversation between MacDonald and Bill Gallinger of the Lost Villages Society. MacDonald didn’t hesitate to turn over the trophy, tarnished by time, to the Lost Villages folks.

Dave Hill, a Lost Villages Society member, said the trophy will be on display at the Lost Villages across from Lakeview Heights during the tourist season and put in the Long Sault Arena display case during the hockey season.

Fittingly, the arena is where the trophy was last presented.

The trophy will be on display at the South Stormont Sports Hall of Fame induction dinner Saturday night.

St. Andrews won the trophy a record five times, four times as the Saints and once as the Blackhawks, and made a roster contribution to the 1962-63 champion Harrison’s Corners-St. Andrew’s Combines.

Construction of the Mille Roches Arena in 1936 took the game in the area to a new level.

The arena served the league until construction of the St. Lawrence Seaway and Power Project wiped out the «Front» and several villages. A new arena in a new town, Long Sault, became the new home for the Longue Sault Hockey League.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Motocross, obviously, is an up and down sport.

But these days Cornwall’s Félicia Robichaud is riding as high as they come.

The two-time Quebec ladies champion is heading south with a collection of Canadian teammates to compete in a grueling six-day enduro race in Argentina.

To say she is looking forward to the challenge would be an understatement.

"It’s a different adrenaline rush," she said in an interview. "It’s not the same as other sports.

You’re alone on the bike. You’re going to go as far as your ability and technique will take you."

In November, when the Canadian team leaves for the International Six-Day Enduro, Robichaud hopes it takes her to a strong finish.

Last year she competed in a similar event in Italy, completing the race and earning a bronze medal. She was the first eastern Canadian female to accomplish such a feat. The race is so

taxing that anyone who finishes receives a bronze, because in enduro racing just being able to make it is an achievement.

"Most people finish it, because it costs a lot to go there," she said. "But it’s not uncommon for someone’s bike to break down, or run into trouble."

The timed six-day event will have Robichaud on her machine, travelling upwards of 200 to 250 km a day. The daily race regimen includes stops at so-called "test areas" where drivers must compete in additional one-off timed events before heading back on their bikes to complete the balance of that day’s course.

In short, it’s a lot of driving - but that’s why Robichaud got into the sport.

"It’s more fun being able to do bigger things than push on the throttle and go," she said.

CORNWALL, Ontario - Business leaders and politicians ditched their suits for more colourful and casual attire at the annual Team Cornwall, Mayor and Council Golf Fun Day at Summerheights Golf Links on September 10.

Instead of playing to win, more than 150 Team Cornwall members soaked in a sunny day of fun and networking over 18 holes of golf.

A delicious BBQ lunch was served while golfers made their way through the greens.

The day wrapped up with a buffet dinner, while musician Graham Greer belted out a soulful yet rugged set of original tunes and classic hits.

"Every year we host this tournament to

gather all of our ambassadors to charge them up so when they travel they can talk about all the great benefits of being in Cornwall," said Peter Gault, chair of Team Cornwall.

The local businessman was appointed as the volunteer group’s fifth chair in May. Members often leave their mark internationally by handing out team cards, similar to a hockey card, to all their new-found connections.

The proceeds of the tournament will help offset the costs of Team Cornwall’s ambassadorial efforts.

Élections municipales: les surprises de dernière minute S’il n’y a pas eu certes l’agitation de Toronto avec le retrait-surprise de Rob Ford, la Ville d’Ottawa a malgré tout connu des petites surprises durant les dernières heures de mise en candidature des élections municipales vendredi après-midi.

De 116 candidats (postes de conseillers et mairie) jeudi soir, la liste s’est allongée à plus de 130 en un peu moins de 24 heures.

Première indication: il y aura bien une course électorale dans chacun des 23 quartiers, puisque Shad Qadri (Stittsville) et Keith Egli (Knoxdale-Merivale), quasiment élus par acclamation jeudi soir, voient chacun un candidat de dernière minute se dresser sur leur route. À Kanata-Sud, ils sont même deux depuis vendredi à barrer le chemin d’Allan Hubley qui s’en allait il y a quelques heures encore vers une victoire sans opposition.

Les quartiers Somerset et Osgoode voient

même onze candidats être inscrits sur les listes électorales en vue de l’élection du 27 octobre.

Les quar tiers francophones n’ont finalement guère connu de changement dans les dernières minutes de mise en candidature, à l’exception d’Orléans où Bob Monette aura un nouvel adversaire. Déclaré vendredi, R. Gordon Jensen sortira les pancartes pour s’opposer à l’échevin sortant, et à Jennifer Robitaille, autre aspirante pour le moment plutôt discrète. À noter que Troy Duré, candidat très tôt déclaré dans Cumberland, s’est retiré à la dernière minute, laissant du coup Stephen Blais et Marc Belisle seuls pour gagner les suffrages des résidents.

Le maire Jim Watson, grand favori à sa propre succession, aura quant à lui un huitième concurrent en la personne de Michael St. Arnaud.

60% des plaintes aux services en français formulées à la Ville d’Ottawa concerneraient une mauvaise traduction.

La conseillère Diane Doré a été reéélue par acclamation.

Plusieurs des élus du Conseil des écoles catholiques du Centre-Est (CECCE) n’auront pas besoin de sortir les pancartes en vue des élections du 27 octobre.

L’institution scolaire a confirmé lundi la réélection de six de ses conseillers dans les secteurs d’Ottawa, à la suite de la fin de la période de mise en candidature vendredi.

Il s’agit de Brigitte Pilon (secteur Lanark, Leeds et Grenville), Chad Mariage (Barrhaven, Knoxdale-Merivale, Kitchissippi, Rivière, Rideau-Goulbourn, Gloucester-Nepean-Sud), Diane Doré (Rideau-Vanier, Somerset, Capitale), Daniel Boudria (Cumberland), Johanne Lacombe (Orléans), et Denis Poirier (Beacon Hill-Cyrville, Rideau-Rockcliffe).

Deux quartiers d’Ottawa verront dès lors une compétition. Celui d’Innes où le

conseiller sortant André Thibodeau croisera le fer avec Jacques Boyer. Dans le secteur Gloucester-Southgate, Alta Vista, Osgoode, l’élue sortante Monique Briand sera opposée au jeune Patrick Twagirayezu, connu notamment pour avoir remporté le Prix laurier pour la jeunesse de l’année au Gala du prix Bernard-Grandmaître 2013.

Du côté du Conseil des écoles publiques de l’est de l’Ontario (CEPEO), la bataille électorale sera bien plus rude puisqu’il y aura bien une élection dans chacun des sept secteurs d’Ottawa. Seul Gilles Fournier a été réélu par acclamation dans le secteur 4 (Hawkesbury, Hawkesbury-Est, Champlain, Alfred, Plantagenet), lequel n’est pas situé dans le périmètre de la Ville d’Ottawa.

La Ville d’Ottawa ne disposerait pas encore de tous les moyens possibles pour lutter contre les erreurs de traduction.

«Nous n’avons pas le temps de tout relire, a fait savoir Renée Bertrand, gestionnaire de la Direction des services en français de la municipalité. Nous avons un total d’une quarantaine de pigistes à l’externe et seulement trois traducteurs à l’interne pour relire plus de sept millions de mots par an.»

L’employée de la Ville répondait à une question de Jean-Louis Schryburt, membre du Comité consultatif sur les services en français (CCSF) lors de la réunion trimestrielle du groupe, jeudi soir.

«Il s’agissait en fait d’une question personnelle de M. Scryburt», a réagi en fin de séance le président du groupe Étienne Camirand, peu enclin à en dire davantage.

Interrogée par le conseiller Bob Monette siégeant sur le comité, Mme Bertrand a précisé

qu’elle n’avait rien contre une «aide supplémentaire» pour l’embauche de personnel dédié à la traduction.

Selon ses chiffres, plus de 60% des plaintes sur les services en français formulées à la Ville d’Ottawa concernent une mauvaise traduction.

Procédures resserrées La Ville d’Ottawa reconnait par ailleurs avoir «resserrer ses procédures» à la suite de nombreuses erreurs récentes dans la traduction en français lesquelles avaient été rapportées par les médias. Dernière en date: celle d’affiches installées par OC Transpo en 2009, sur la rue Rideau.

«Je peux vous assurer, que les traductions sont toutes correctes à plus de 95%, a précisé.

Nous faisons un gros travail. Même dans une institution comme l’Organisation des Nations Unies (ONU), il est reconnu qu’il y a toujours deux coquilles pour 1500 mots», a conclu la gestionnaire.

Some rich and famous authors divide their time between New York and Los Angeles, or London and Paris. Since June 7, 2014 I divide my time between Williamstown and Ingleside.

Unfortunately I am neither rich nor famous.

The street naming systems and patterns of Ingleside, and the occasional lack of system and consistency of pattern, fascinate me.

Here’s why.

The most obvious system seems to be its use of six or seven arbor street names (‘arbor: Latin for ‘tree’): Beech, Cypress, Elm, Hickory, Maple and Pine - with Wildwood being a treeish name.

However, the street-naming gods in charge of christening I ngleside’s thoroughfares did not follow through in the use of tree names. They made a brief foray into geography. Examples: Hoople, Killarney, Santa Cruz, Thorold, and Wales.

Then there are the streets apparently named in honour of people: Napier and Piercy.

It seems someone tired of Farran as a street name, as it suddenly morphs into Industrial Drive at 45th Parallel Drive. Unfortunately, there are many houses on Industrial Drive, but there is not yet any industry on it.

Don’t expect any consistency in Ingleside’s use of ‘avenue’, ‘drive’ or ‘street’. Some of its ‘street’-suffixed thoroughfares are northsouth oriented; others go east-west. In some grid cities there is a rigid and useful pattern adhered to, making navigation much easier.

To me, a thoroughfare that makes a U-turn back onto the same road should bear a crescent suffix. In Ingleside, Pine Street and Maple Street are crescents, but not signed as such.

If I were in charge of street planning, there would be systems - and systems would be adhered to. Alphabetical order would be one: Able, Baker, Charlie, Dog… Compass order would be another. East to west (as in

Vancouver): Newfoundland, then Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Quebec, Ontario…

Classifications, in alphabetical order of course, would work too: Auk, Buzzard, Crow, Dodo, Eagle, Finch, Grosbeak…

Ingleside has three dead-end streets (Cypress Lane, Wildwood Drive and Woodlands Road), but to the annoyance of any new-to-town motorist, they are neither named nor posted as such.

There are many foreign terms that we could use in signage of ‘dead end’ streets. The Czech option is ‘slepa ulicka’; French: ‘impasse’ or ‘cul-de-sac’; German: ‘sackgasse’; Holland: ‘doodleopende stratt’; Hungarian: ’zsakutka’; Italian: ’strada senza uscita’; Polish: ‘slepa uliczka’. According to my Ukrainian roots, I’ve been told the term would be ‘hlukhyy kut’.

How did I discover and learn about this useful but sometimes baffling street-naming trivia? Curiosity, travel, maps and exploring pages of text and the Web. My life is all about curiosity, travel, maps and exploring.

MEMORIAL SQUARE ISN’T – Ingleside’s Memorial Square is a misnomer. It’s definitely a rectangle. However, if renamed as a ‘piazza’, some wag would be looking for the pizza outlet on it.

Mark your calendars for this musical performance on Friday, September 26, at Christ Church United. The concert start at 7 p.m.

“The OPP Chorus is an unique event for our area and it’s something both different

and affordable for everyone to attend,” said Bruce Kemp, the club’s president.

An RCMP Musical Ride kicked off the anniversary festivities last year, before hosting a well-received fall dinner. And as always, Chesterville Rotarians raised tens of thousands of dollars to help support local and international causes.

“Our club has had a busy and rewarding year,” Kemp added.

Fantastic fish fry The 10th annual Seguin Family Fish Fry was held at the summer home of Yves and Mélanie Séguin in South Glengarry. “Seeing it was the last year for the fish fry and since we both had family members pass at the Hospice, we decided that the money raised at this year’s event would be donated to Carefor Hospice” stated Mélanie. The 500 in attendance were treated to a feast included perch rolls and fixings, then there was a live auction and entertainment by Mystic. The event raised an overwhelming $15,250 “Words cannot express our gratitude for all their hard work. "We want to thank the Séguin family and all those involved in making this event such a success” commented Sandy Collette, Carefor Fundraising Coordinator. Sue Gallant, of “Gail’s Beads for Brains”, recently made a donation of $1,500 to the Canadian Cancer Society for brain cancer research. “Gail’s Beads for Brains” began as a fundraiser with the creation and selling of hand-made bracelets when Ms Gallant’s sister, Gail Prieur, was diagnosed with an aggressive form of brain cancer. The family continue to create and sell hand-made bracelets in honour of Ms Prieur’s memory.
