CORNWALL, Ontario – Nav Canada hosted 30 girls from across the country this week at the Explore Aviation Summer Camp, where girls going into grade 10 got to learn about careers in aviation.

“This is the first time we put this together,” said Lyne Wilson, Assistant Vice President of Talent Management with Nav Canada. “I think it went extremely well, and I would say that the girls would say the same thing, and the instructors. The girls learned a lot throughout the week and it was even better than we expected.”

The girls, who came from all 10 provinces and two territories, learned about air traffic control, flight service specialists, technical operations, engineering and cybersecurity. They went into the aviation simulator and built a box that can track aircrafts. The girls also took day trips to Ottawa and Montreal.

Candidates were required to submit an essay, letter of recommendation and application form before they could be selected. “(It’s) to promote aviation as a career for women,” said Wilson. “Women don’t necessarily think about aviation as a career and there’s a lot of opportunities for them to follow.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Three term councillor Bernadette Clement announced that she is ready to run for Mayor of Cornwall.

She made the announcement around noon at the RCAF Wing 424 on Cornwall’s waterfront on Friday, July 20.

In an interview with Seaway News Clement explained some of her key policy points.

“I want us to talk about our waterfront, the arts, the new arts centre, and I want to talk about our downtowns,” she said. “The heart and soul of any community is its downtown and we are lucky enough to have two.”

She said that Cornwall’s waterfront should

be central for anyone running for Mayor.

“There needs to be political discussion at the federal level,” Clement explained. She felt that the City should not have to pay top dollar for the waterfront property given the impact the creation and use of the seaway had on this region.

Clement also said she sought to bring a new approach to the annual budget deliberations.

“This last budget cycle took up way too much time for administration and council,” said Clement.

Deliberations over this year’s budget began in November and ended in early May. She pointed to ongoing issues with property assessments from the Municipal Property

Assessment Corporation (MPAC) as one reason for the budget issues.

“We need better dialogue with MPAC and the province around these issues,” she said.

In terms of tax rates, she felt that in this area as well, there is not enough communication.

“We need to engage with the public throughout the year,” Clement said. “People will accept reasonable tax hikes if they are confident in our strategy.”

In her announcement Clement said that some have questioned how much time she will be able to dedicate to the job, she is also the Executive Director of Legal Aid Cornwall.

Overlaid on all of that are the rousing tunes of Glengarry’s great celtic bands.

On August 3 and 4, the grounds of the Kenyon Agricultural Society in Maxville will be bursting with wall-to-wall activities that feature something for every age and interest.

This year’s Scottish fiddling guests are two local youth groups, The MacLeod Fiddlers & The Students of David MacPhee. Scottish Fiddle starts at 2 pm Friday with the “Youth Fiddlers’ Showcase” and wraps up with the Glengarry Massed Fiddlers at 5:30 pm as they warm-up for their performance at 6:30 pm to start the Friday Night Tattoo. The MacLeod Fiddlers will also be showcased in the Tattoo as they celebrate their 25th year.

Scottish fiddling continues on Saturday morning in the Arena Hall with a mix of fiddle workshops & mini concerts from 9:30 am till 11:30 am with the two special guest youth groups. The

Glengarry Massed Fiddlers will open and close the Saturday afternoon concert which starts at 1:30 pm also featuring The MacLeod Fiddlers & The Students Of David MacPhee.

On Friday evening before the Tattoo, three Glengarry tug of war teams again will challenge each other to see who is the best in the county.

CORNWALL, Ontario – After the Agapè Centre announced that they are seeking help due to declining donations, Isabelle Pilon, 9, and Jacob Pilon, 11, started a $20 donation challenge on social media.

“When we saw their video on Facebook that they were in need of some money donations, we decided to start a tiny challenge to challenge our family members and friends to donate $20,” said Jacob. “But we didn’t know it would have this ripple effect, so everyone would join in. It’s pretty amazing.”

The sibling’s mother posted their video on Facebook, and several commenters replied that they would accept the challenge.

The Optimist Club of Cornwall has offered to match Isabelle and Jacob’s donations up to $1,000 in FreshCo gift cards. So when donating to the Agapè Centre, mentioning that you are a part of the Isabelle and Jacob $20 challenge will result in double the contribution.

The siblings were excited when they found out about The Optimist Club’s offer.

“This was late at night so my mom woke me up and she was like, the Optimist Club can donate $1,000, and I was like, yes!” said Jacob.

In the past, Isabelle has fundraised and cut eight inches of her hair in support of pediatric cancer.

“I hope this helps people in need,” said Isabelle.

Joh Ann Couture, Agapè Centre Director of Operations, told the Seaway News earlier this week that the centre has received 30 per cent fewer donations this year in comparison to last year. The centre reduced expenditures by 40 per cent in 2017. On average 160 people are served per day, and roughly 600 families use their food bank every month, according to board chairman Maurice Dupelle.

Drug charges withdrawn Nick Seebruch

CORNWALL, Ontario – On May 15, 2018, drug possession and trafficking charges against Isabelle Cabot were withdrawn.

Cabot, 41, of Cornwall was charged with possession of cocaine, possession of cocaine for the purpose of trafficking, possession of

fentanyl and possession of property obtained by crime. The charges stemmed from a drug warrant executed at a Fifth St. residence on Dec. 20, 2017.

Cabot had attended police headquarters on Jan. 3, 2018 to deal with the matter and it was then that she was formally charged.

The charges were withdrawn at the request of the Crown Attorney’s office.

CORNWALL, Ontario - On Monday, July 23, 2018 Rurban Brewing presented the Agapè Centre with a cheque for $1,500.

“We’d like to thank the community for their support which enables us to make this donation,” said Karen Rorabeck of Rurban Brewing.

“We are fortunate to be able to do this in Agapè’s time of need.”

Last Monday, the Agapè Centre announced that they were facing financial hardships this summer, with their donations 31 percent lower than in previous years.

These funding shortfalls have already meant that there have been some cutbacks. The Agapè Centre is no longer able to give carrots to every family that comes into their food bank due to the expense.

The Agapè Centre soup kitchen serves

around 160 people every day and their food bank supports around 600 families a month.

The community has already started to come together in support of the Agapè Centre. In addition to donations received from local businesses like Rurban, siblings Isabelle and Jacob Pilon, 9 and 11 respectively have started a $20 challenge fundraiser. The youngsters are challenging family and friends to donate $20 to the Agapè Centre and to then pass on the challenge to people they know.

The money was raised by Rurban through the sale of their Queens of Eire beer, an Irish red which was brewed in January with the help of volunteers and sold in March in honour of International Women’s Day. Queens of Eire sold out in 20 days.

Donations can be made online at the Agapè Centre’s website or at their location at 40 Fifth St. W.

SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario - The ninth annual Paddle Poker Run in support of the Alzheimer’s Society casted off on Saturday, July 21 from Hybrid Marine just outside of Lancaster.

Josée Roy-Pilon, Campaign Coordinator for the Alzheimer’s Society of Cornwall and District said that she hoped to see as many as 80 people take to the water and participate in the Poker Run this year, which would be their most number of participants ever.

In total, she said she hoped to raise around $6,000 for the local Alzheimer’s Society.

“The Alzheimer’s Society will keep the funds local,” she said explaining that they would be used to fund programs like their day program, minds in motion, support groups and an eightweek course for those who suffer from Alzheimer’s and their caregivers.

Participants left from Hybrid Marine at 10:30 a.m., their course would take them to three different locations where they would collect poker chips, with a break at Squaw Island.

The paddlers then returned to Hybrid Marine for poker games, free massages and door prizes.

The event was supported by 15 volunteers total. “Three out of four Canadians know someone with Alzheimer’s or dementia,” said RoyPilon. “We need to support individuals and families who suffer from this terrible disease.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – The 24th annual Golf For Kids Sake was in full swing today at the Cornwall Golf and Country Club. The tournament, which is raising funds for Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Cornwall and District, is sold out this year, with 144 players and 36 teams.

“It is on the best day of the year in my opinion,” said Jillian Hendry, Fundraising Coordinator with Big Brothers and Big Sisters. “It’s nice and sunny and there’s a little bit of wind.”

Hendry said this year’s fundraising goal is over $20,000, although that amount has been surpassed every year. Tickets were sold for $130 per person, or $560 a team.

“All the funds raised today go directly towards our in-school mentoring programs and group programs,” said Hendry.

Every hole is sponsored this year, providing

something new at every stop. Golfers get to enjoy snacks, like Dairy Queen desserts, beverages and games while they compete.

“There’s a lot of community involvement.

Our silent auction is huge this year, which is great,” said Hendry.

This year, the event will host a silent auction, live auction, raffle and 50/50 draw. Participants have the chance to win and bid on numerous prizes, like Via Rail tickets, West Jet tickets, a dinner date with Guy Lafleur, and a ‘basket of cheer’, a large basket with an assortment of alcohol.

SOUTH GLENGARRY, Ontario - A new summer fundraising tournament took place at Charlottenburgh Park on Saturday, July 21.

The first ever Serving Kindness charity volleyball tournament was organized by Colton Gallant and a dedicated team of friends.

There were 12 teams participating in the tournament and the first ball was served at 9 a.m. Eight to 10 people were on each team and Gallant hoped to raise roughly $2,400.

LANCASTER, Ontario - The Township of South Glengarry in partnership with Royal Canadian Legion Branch 544 in Lancaster installed a Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) Monument III next to the Legion building on Military Rd. in Lancaster.

“The project was initiated by RCL-Branch 544 to honour the 40,000 Canadian forces personnel who served in Afghanistan and the 168 Canadians who were killed in the conflict. The $60,000 project is jointly funded by RCL-Branch 544, the Township of South Glengarry and donations from community members and businesses,” stated Pierre Roy, who initiated the project and is now coordinating the installation.

Roy explained that the community perfectly met the requirements of the selection committee.

Lancaster has a connection to Canadian military history, a connection to the war in Afghanistan and the sacrifice of a local soldier in the war, Sgt. Marc D. Leger. Sgt. Leger died April 18, 2002 while serving in Kandahar, Afghanistan.

At the official unveiling of the monument, a second plaque will be revealed paying tribute to

Sgt. Leger.

The LAV III is a part of a Canadian monument project to recognize those who served.

“The Light Armoured Vehicle (LAV) III Monument Program recognizes the service and sacrifice of the Canadian Armed Forces in Afghanistan by providing full-size demilitarized replica LAV IIIs to qualifying communities throughout Canada,” reads a statement on the lavmonument.ca website.

Ride for Hospice CORNWALL, Ontario – On Saturday, Aug. 11, the Ride for Hospice in support of Hospice Cornwall is taking off from the St. Lawrence Blvd Pub on Second St. W. in Riverdale.

The ride is being organized by the Seaway Valley Riders.

“We’ve all had friends here, relatives,” said Brian Hannan of the Seaway Valley Riders.

“This will be the first event of many for us,” said Mike Dagenais. “This is a cause that’s near and dear to us.”

The Seaway Valley Riders have around 30 members and this is their first time doing a ride like this.

To participate costs $20 per-rider and $5 for a passenger. Those without motorcycles are invited as well. Dagenais and Hannan said that cars and bicycles are welcomed to participate.

One-hundred percent of the funds raised by the ride will go to Hospice Cornwall.

There will also be a BBQ with donations accepted and a variety of items donated by local businesses that will be auctioned off.

Registration for the ride will open at 9 a.m. on Aug. 11 and the ride will leave from

the St. Lawrence Blvd Pub at 10:30 a.m.

The first stop on the ride will be The Atlantic Pub in Alexandria, then off to the St. Albert’s Cheese Factory before returning to the St. Lawrence Blvd Pub. “Anyone who knows Hospice, knows it is a good cause,” said Dagenais.

Nouvelles normes d’admission aux piscines publiques Communiqué de presse de la BSEO Maintenant que l’été est là, les enfants partout anticipent avec bonheur de s’amuser et se rafraîchir en se baignant. Cependant, il est important d’assurer leur sécurité pendant qu’ils s’amusent. Au Canada, la noyade est la deuxième cause en importance des décès liés aux blessures chez les enfants. C’est pourquoi le ministère de la Santé et des Soins de longue durée a révisé ses normes d’admission aux piscines publiques de classe A. Une piscine publique de classe A se définie comme étant une piscine dans un endroit public

où un sauveteur est de service, comme une piscine dans un parc municipal ou un centre récréatif.

En vertu de ces nouvelles normes, le Médecin hygiéniste du Bureau de santé de l’est de l’Ontario exige que tous les enfants de moins de 10 ans qui se baignent dans une piscine publique soient accompagnés d’un surveillant d’au moins 12 ans.

Ce surveillant est responsable de superviser directement les enfants sous sa charge.

Les nouvelles normes d’admission aux piscines publiques sont réparties en deux catégories : Pour les enfants de moins de 6 ans : Il faut un surveillant pour deux enfants quand

ceux-ci ne portent pas de gilet de sauvetage.

Il faut un surveillant pour quatre enfants quand ceux-ci portent un gilet de sauvetage.

Pour les enfants âgés entre 6 et 9 ans : Il faut un surveillant pour 4 enfants quand ceux-ci ne portent pas de gilet de sauvetage.

Il faut un surveillant pour 8 enfants quand ceux-ci portent un gilet de sauvetage.

Voici certaines mesures que vous pouvez prendre pour assurer la sécurité des enfants qui se trouvent dans l’eau ou autour d’un plan d’eau : Garder dans votre champ de vision et à la portée de votre main les enfants de moins de 5 ans et ceux qui ne savent pas bien nager. À cet âge, les enfants sont attirés par l’eau sans toutefois en

comprendre les dangers. Les jeunes enfants peuvent se noyer dans aussi peu qu’un pouce (2,5 cm) d’eau.

S’assurer que les jeunes enfants et les mauvais nageurs portent des gilets de sauvetage.

Inscrire vos enfants à des leçons de natation le plus tôt possible. Mais il ne faut surtout pas oublier qu’enseigner à votre enfant comment nager ne signifie pas qu’il est en sécurité dans l’eau. Donc, même si votre enfant a pris des leçons de natation, il ne faut jamais le laisser seul dans la piscine ou à la plage.

Récemment, la présence potentielle d’autres drogues très toxiques contenant du fentanyl a été signalée dans l’Est ontarien, incluant de « l’héroïne mauve ». L’héroïne mauve est un mélange qui peut contenir de l’héroïne, du fentanyl, du carfentanil ou d’autres drogues. Elle a aussi été détectée dans d’autres régions d’un bout à l’autre de l’Ontario, plus récemment à Ottawa.

« La santé et la sécurité de notre communauté est notre priorité. Il est donc nécessaire que le public soit mis au courant de ce qui peut circuler », dit Danny Aikman, chef désigné du SCPC. « Alors que le SCPC travaille avec diligence pour éliminer les drogues illicites dans nos rues, il est toutefois important de rappeler au public les risques de consommer des drogues, surtout quand on ne sait pas ce qu’elles contiennent. » Les gens qui utilisent des médicaments contrefaits ou des drogues de rue sont à risque élevé de faire une overdose puisqu’ils ne savent pas ce que contient la drogue et qu’elle est parfois mortelle en très petites doses. « Nous recommandons fortement au grand public d’éviter de consommer la drogue de rue à cause de ce danger accru », déclare Dr Paul Roumeliotis, Médecin hygiéniste du BSEO. « Si vous avez besoin d’aide pour cesser d’utiliser les drogues, nous vous encourageons à demander l’aide d’un centre de soins comme le Centre communautaire de santé mentale et de dépendances de l’Hôpital communautaire de Cornwall, le centre de Santé mentale et toxicomanie de l’Hôpital général de Hawkesbury, Recovery Cornwall et Change Healthcare.”

Le SCPC et le BSEO incitent les résidents à réduire les risques d’une overdose en évitant complètement d’utiliser les drogues de rue. Pour ceux qui continuent de les consommer, le BSEO incite à la prudence et suggère de ne les utiliser que là où les services d’urgence peuvent les trouver, d’éviter de combiner différentes drogues ou

les drogues et l’alcool, et de se procurer gratuitement une trousse de naloxone qui peut renverser l’effet d’une overdose d’opioïdes. Si vous soupçonnez que vous ou une connaissance êtes en train de faire une overdose, appelez le 911. La Loi sur les bons samaritains secourant les victimes de surdose protège les gens qui font une overdose ou ceux qui sont témoins d’une overdose et qui font le 911 pour demander de l’aide.

La cocaïne et un analogue du fentanyl ont été détectés dans une drogue de rue sous forme de poudre blanche, saisie vers la fin de 2017 par le SCPC. There are only a few days left before the nomination period closes for municipal elections.

So far in Cornwall there are 14 people running for council and three running for Mayor, for the position of trustee however, most incumbents are running unopposed.

Sadly, this is the case for many school boards, where trustees face no opposition and are acclaimed. In the province of Ontario, around one-third of all trustees on all school boards are acclaimed.

There are four school boards in Cornwall and a total of five incumbent trustees. As of writing, all trustees in Cornwall are running unopposed.

I believe that the incumbent trustees should be applauded at least for putting themselves out there first and for serving their community, but I believe that our school boards would be improved if our trustees faced some competition at the ballot box.

The public deserves the best representation and that can only happen if trustees are challenged in elections. Other members of he

public need to come forward with their own ideas for education and whether those ideas are accepted or not, the system is stronger for having tested them.

The past two years have clearly shown that there are major changes coming to our schools both from the provincial level and from the school boards themselves.

Right now we are in the midst of a debate as to what our sex-ed curriculum should look like.

Two years ago this fall, both of the local English language school boards in our area began a process that saw many local schools face closure.

It was during that second fight in particular that I saw many people come forward and get involved with the politics of their school board, many for the first time. Meetings about school closures, curriculum and class sizes were packed with interested and involved members of the public who demanded change, or a stop to the plans that would have closed so many local, rural schools. It is now two years later and where did all of these people go?

If anyone out there reading this was unhappy about their school being threatened with closure two years ago, or about not having

French Immersion programming at their school, or want to help shape the future of rural education, then they should be running. Even if they don’t get elected, they should at least put their ideas out there and challenge the incumbent trustees.

The amount of school board trustees that are acclaimed is staggering and it shakes my confidence and makes me question whether the public is being best served by the current system. I am not calling out any particular school board trustee, but I think that all

incumbents would benefit from at least being tested in a competitive election.

Conservatives appear to be happy when looking inward at their own needs and rarely look with honesty at the needs of others. Your mailing is a classic example of this selfish attitude for it paints a clear image that you have no

compassion for the rest of the world that may suffer at the hands of global warming. The present government does have a plan to try and participate in dealing with global warming and the Conservatives, WITH NO ALTERNATIVE, only try to undermine the status quo.

As immigrants, we can attest to the reality that Canadians, generally, are not poor and they surely cannot afford to be with Conservative practices hanging over their heads.

Let us dwell for a moment on the Ontario scene for this truly demonstrates how dishonest Conservative policies are. The new Premier has scrapped a very sound cap & trade program and has NO ALTERNATIVE to replace it, saying, “we are serving Ontario taxpayers money.” This Conservative Premier does not remind the public of the costs of any court cases that evolve when the Federal Government imposes a program or if businesses challenge the

government. With such costs coming from the provincial coffers Ontario taxpayers will be poorer not richer.

Little wonder the international media see this person as being a ‘troublemaker’ – see the attached. Can the public afford such costly Conservative plans whether they be Federal or Provincial?

However, he did attend a Korean War veterans reception/dinner in the Senate dining room on June 23.

Duffy recalls the day he, at the time 21, and a friend were sitting in the old Lloyd George Hotel beverage room when they decided, on a whim, to travel to Kingston and sign up and volunteer for Korea. A few months later, he was in South Korea.

“Young and foolish,” says Duffy, with a chuckle.

They had no idea what they were getting themselves into, but looking back and knowing that he played a role in making South Korea free of the brutal Communist yoke, Duffy has no regrets.

“Sorry,” he says. “They were so young (and some where friends).”

Korean War veteran Elburn Duffy, who spent 13 months, most of it on the front lines with the Royal Canadian Regiment (just two hot showers in that time), is reflecting on his first and only visit to South Korea in 1987.

The return for the 90-year-old Cornwall resident and retired Domtar employee, included a visit to military cemeteries and the graves of six Cornwall and area residents killed in action, one a close school chum. A seventh city resident, Milton Vipond, died in 1955 during the post-conflict peace keeping mission.

Killed in action were Donald Steer, Paul Gallinger, Curtis Hayes, Joseph Piche, Joseph Sauve and Maurice Campeau. They were among the 150 city and area residents who fought in Korea. All were volunteers. Gallinger had volunteered for a second tour.

This year marks the 65th anniversary of the armistice that put the war on hold.

On Friday (July 27) the anniversary will be observed at the Korean War Memorial Wall in Brampton. The wall contains 516 bronze plaques with the names of the Canadian killed in action.

A recent mishap will keep Duffy away from the annual ceremony for the first time in 21 years.

Fabric softeners are waxy materials that are related to soap. They work by coating your laundry with waxy lubricants and humectant chemicals. The lubricants let fibers slide past each other, reducing wrinkling.

They also separate a napped fabric a napped fabric’s fibers and stand them on end, which makes a towel, for instance, feel fluffy. The humectancts help the fabric retain moisture to dissipate the static charges that would otherwise cause clothes to cling and sparks to fly when you pull them apart. There are three basic types of fabric softeners. RINSE liquids are added to the wash during the rinse cycle.

DRYER SHEETS are absorbed with softener.

When you put a sheet into the dryer along with the laundry, contact and heat release the softener. DETERGENTS with FABRIC softeners are added at the start of the wash cycle. The most effective is liquid softeners but DRYER SHEETS soften to roughtly the same degree and detergents with fabric softener is the lesser of the two.

Injury at Olymel Nick Seebruch

CORNWALL, Ontario - The spokesperson for Olymel, Richard Vigneault, confirmed that a worker at Olymel was injured on the job on Wednesday, July 18.

A 22-year-old woman was injured at around 3:20 a.m. when her hand got caught in a piece of machinery.

She was taken to Cornwall Community Hospital for treatment before being transferred to the trauma centre in Ottawa.

According to Vigneault, the injured woman worked for a company subcontracted by Olymel for sanitation services. She became trapped in a piece of machinery while cleaning it and Cornwall Fire Services were called to free her hand.

Vigneault said that the Ministry of Labour was conducting an investigation and the Olymel was conducting an investigation of its own.

The Ministry of Labour confirmed all of these details to Seaway News.

Shannon says she was called by someone claiming to be from the CRA saying that she was wanted for tax evasion and then put her on a three way call with the “police”. They told her there was a warrant out for her arrest and she could be jailed or fined. The CRA will always send you a professional letter when dealing with any tax issues. Seniors and all residents should be wary when dealing with people claiming to be from the CRA or their bank over the phone.

I would like to thank the Good Samaritan who picked up my dog’s poop bag along the bike path (off 12th east / Carlton). We took a 4km hike and I was going to pick it up on my way back instead of carrying it with me for 3.9 km but someone picked it up for me.

On September 21, 2017, Brent successfully defended his thesis on Agriculture as Niche Construction: Eco-cultural niche evolution during the Neolithic (c.6200-4900 BC) of the Struma River Valley.

With his recent Masters and his B.A. Major in Anthropology (with distinction) from Vancouver Island University, Brent has chosen to start his PhD at SUNY Buffalo beginning in September 2018.

Inside he noticed a harmless old hound dog asleep on the floor besides the cash register.

“Yep, that’s him,” he replied.

The stranger couldn’t help but be amused.
