CORNWALL, Ontario - No, we’re not being invaded - but if we were to be, Royal Canadian Legion Branch 297 in Cornwall has something to scare the enemy.

A massive artillery piece, known officially as a “self-propelled howitzer” has been delivered to the Legion on Cumberland Street, a donation from the Department of National Defence.

The huge piece of military hardware, which looks more like a tank to the lay person, was used by Canada from 1967 to 2005 - primarily in Germany during the Cold War - and was decommissioned before spending time at a Canadian Forces workshop in Montreal.

For more than three years Branch 297 has been trying to acquire a large military asset to

decorate its parking lot.

On Tuesday the Howitzer was delivered.

“You said it, go big or go home,” laughed Art Murray, Branch 297’s second vice-president.

“Our past president Ken Heagle always said he wanted something like this.

“When you drive past other legions in Canada, they often have something like this out in front.”

But not this big.

A special concrete pad had to be put down in the fall to accommodate the 26-ton behemoth. Before donating the Howitzer the army completely decommissioned it, and welded it shut.

“No one can get into it,” said Murray.

The legion plans to have a dedication ceremony this spring to officially welcome its newest asset.

as blood thinners used by doctors following openheart surgery last week are creating a side effects that have kept those monitoring his condition on their toes. And with an infection that now appears to have set in, the hill Mike must climb has gotten steeper.

“I’m not even sure they would be able to do a transplant now, if a heart becomes available,” said Tia. “The infection and fever might prevent that.”

Friends and family are rallying around the Scott family.

An online fundraising campaign has been created to help offset the costs associated with driving to Ottawa daily, not to mention covering parking fees and the like.

In the meantime Tia is counting the minutes.

“If they don’t have a new heart for him in another two or three weeks they will have to come up with a new plan,” she said. “Right now there is a temporary device in him.”

Tia is still unsure what the “temporary device” is - but one thing is clear, it is helping keep her husband alive. But the device can only remain in Mike

Mike & Tia Scott for as long as three weeks. After that doctors have to go back in and replace the device with a socalled “heartmate.”

Heartmates are pumps that dramatically improve survival and quality of life, for patients like Mike. But if such a device is installed, Mike’s place at the top of the transplant list will drop, so timing is important.

“We don’t know what is going to happen to him,” said Tia, adding her husband could be in the hospital for as long as eight months. “Right now we have no idea what to think.”

CORNWALL Ontario - A Cornwall man fighting for his life in an Ottawa hospital has finally come out of a medically-induced coma - and wants to know what the TV options are in his room. Mike Scott finally emerged from the coma Tuesday morning, his wife Tia said in a social media post.

“The hospital just called and Mike woke up this morning fully alert,” she said on Facebook. “He pulled out his breathing tube and spoke to the doctor. Mike has a flat screen TV on the wall and he asked the doctor if they had Cogeco or Bell because he wanted to watch Sportsnet.”

But the Cornwall man who needs a new heart is far from out of the woods. Now that he has emerged from the coma he can likely go back on a transplant list for a new heart.

Just over a week ago Mike was enjoying his family, job and life in general.

Today he continues to reel from a massive heart attack that has confounded doctors and had at one point put him near the top of the list for a transplant.

Mike has already undergone a pair of surgeries and now his doctors are trying to pinpoint the source of an infection that has led to a spiked fever.

“It’s been traumatic,” said his wife Tia. “Sometimes I am pretty good, and other times not so much.”

Jan. 18 Scott had just returned from an earlymorning walk with his dog when his wife could hear him vomiting repeatedly in the bathroom.

“It sounded horrible,” said Tia. “I heard him call my name and I heard him hit the floor.”

She was able to get Mike roused, and called 911. Doctors performed an EKG at the hospital and immediately had him transported to Ottawa.

The diagnosis? A heart, just 37 years old, that is almost completely blocked.

Tia said her husband is typically the picture of health. He works out regularly and eats right, she said.

“Two-thirds of his heart is now dead,” she said.

Mike, who is a custodian at Central Public School in Cornwall, was placed in a medicallyinduced coma to give his body and chance to heal.

CORNWALL, Ontario - A new social media presence for Cornwall police means updates in real time for all things traffic in the city.

Police are now active on Twitter (@CCPStraffic) and Facebook (facebook.com/ccpstraffic) with regular daily updates on things like traffic tie-ups in Cornwall, accidents and even weather-related hazards.

“There has been a really good response from everyone,” said Const. Matt Dupuis, who does the majority of the traffic-related social media updates.

Dupuis posts photos of officers doing radar work to catch speeders (in an effort to ensure

motorists follow the speed limit) and also updates images from accident scenes.

“Everyone wants to see what an accident looks like,” said Dupuis.

But rubberneckers can make it difficult for emergency crews to clear a scene.

“Now (people) don’t have to head down to see things for themselves.”

Members of the public are also encouraged to reach out to Dupuis and the police via social media if they witness an accident or other traffic-related issues.

“We also put out minor things - like urging people to check their windshields and the brakes, to make sure everything is working ok,” said Dupuis.

City cops buy back pawned wedding ring for elderly Cornwall couple TODD LIHOU todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - A collection of Cornwall police officers went above and beyond the call of duty on the weekend helping an elderly couple buy back a wedding ring that was pawned to buy groceries.

Coun. Andre Rivette updated city council on the story Monday night, which goes something like this:

City cops were attending what they believed was a domestic call at a Cornwall home involving an elderly couple who were in the midst of an argument.

Upon visiting the home police discovered that an elderly woman was suffering from dementia. They further determined that the husband had recently pawned his wedding ring in an effort to purchase groceries.

The couple had been married 54 years and the husband admitted he was finding it

difficult to not only care for his wife, but to put food on the table.

Police quickly began canvassing among themselves and raised $150 to purchase groceries for the couple, as well as $130 to buy the ring back from a local pawn shop.

Rivette’s story was met with an ovation from those in the council chambers.

“This really shows that our officers have a heart,” he said.

The officers who helped will receive a commendation from the police services

board soon for their efforts.

The Alzheimer’s Society and Community Care Access Centre are now involved in the case.

The members of the service involved in helping the couple include constables Kim Norman, Cody Casselman, Michel Riel, Rodney DeGray, Casey MacGregor, James Lemoyre, sergeants Patrick Paquette, Dan Doyon and George Knezevic as well as civilians Jody Sheard, Josee Lalonde, Claire Denis, Jenna Legault and Tasha Marcotte.

As we embark on a renewed journey, we take this opportunity to thank all of our stakeholders and to announce the appointment of our new CEO, Rock Lefebvre and to introduce you to our team.

Following a thorough search process, the Board chose Rock for his positive fit with the CCCFDC and its values. In addition to his management experience and professional qualifications, the Selection Committee was particularly drawn to Rock’s passion for business growth and economic development and his diverse background across a number of industries.

As a Glengarry native, Rock is pleased to return to the area and to have the

opportunity to help local businesses grow and to participate in shaping economic priorities for Cornwall, Akwasasne, Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry.

Rounding out our team, we would like to announce also that Lynn Lee has recently joined our group as Youth Coordinator while Brian MacDonald and Melissa Anne Ferguson joined in the latter half of 2014 as Business and Investment Advisor and Project Officer respectively. Louise Pilon, our most tenured staff person continues to serve as Office Administrator.

Continuing to build on the good work of the Community Futures Development Corporation, the organization will be exploring with FedDev and its community partners, a renewed business model, which effectively leverages its loan and investment portfolio with such initiatives as the Community Futures Capital Fund and the Eastern Ontario Development Program (EODP).

❖ Along with raising funds for research for all cancers, the Canadian Cancer Society provides transportation and support for those living with cancer. For a nominal, one time, registration fee our Wheels of Hope transportation program provides local cancer patients with regular rides to and from their cancer related treatment and medical appointments. ❖ The local office of the Canadian Cancer Society covers the five counties of Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry, and Prescott & Russell. ❖ Our volunteer drivers are on the road every day ensuring that people get to treatments in Montreal, Ottawa and Kingston. ❖ To run successfully the local transportation program uses 103 volunteer drivers, 5 patient liaison volunteers, and 1 employee to schedule the rides. ❖ Our transportation program filled 5800 requests and drove 333,650 km to take more than 426 local clients to their cancer related appointments in 2013. Locally the direct cost of the transportation program was more than $121,000 in 2014. ❖ The transportation program is currently supporting 28 local families with a child being treated with cancer, providing reimbursement for more than 1000 trips to treatment in 2014. ❖ The average cost of taking one patient to one round trip appointment for treatment is $75.00. ❖ Typically, the average cancer treatment requires a minimum of 14 trips to treatment at a cost of $1050. ❖ Provincially the program costs a staggering $6 million dollars to operate. ❖ The transportation program is especially vital in communities such as ours as many clients travel outside of our area for treatment. It is not an understatement to say that some people would literally not be able to make it to treatment without this vital program.

Behind the canvas at art gallery ADAM BRAZEAU CORNWALL, Ontario – Differing visions and a “disconnect” between the board governing The Art Gallery - Cornwall and its executive director led to an exodus of individuals earlier this month. While many former members of the TAG board whom Seaway News has spoken with have declined to address the issue with specifics, former board member Jason Setnyk lifted the veil of secrecy slightly in recent comments to this newspaper.

“In my opinion there was a disconnect between the executive director and board members,” said Setnyk. “We had different visions for the art gallery.”

But Setnyk wouldn’t go any further with his comments, because “litigation is a legitimate concern.”

It’s a running theme among many former members of the TAG board, who will not speak out concerning their time with the organization

– many citing a fear they could be sued by TAG’s longtime executive director Sylvie Lizotte for saying anything. In fact, lawyers for Lizotte and the board exchanged correspondence concerning potential litigation during TAG’s most recent term.

Things came to a head for the board recently when, en masse, every member resigned. A new board has since been created, with former city council candidate and fervent supporter of Lizotte, Rolland Besner, voted in as chair.

Last term’s TAG board members included Coun.

Carilyne Hebert (president), Coun. Elaine MacDonald, Aline Gareau, Erynn Blackadder, Jose Martin, and Jenny-Lee Roy, as well as Setnyk.

“I joined two years ago because the entire board before that, except for one member, walked out,” said Hebert, who is also a communications volunteer for the Centre for the Arts Collective, a fundraising committee for an arts centre in Cornwall.

When asked about the alleged disconnect between the TAG board and Lizotte, she refused to make any comment. Instead she suggested: “I resigned because I wanted to focus on my new role as city councillor.

“I knew if I was elected I was going to have to step away from some of my volunteer commitments.”

After leading the gallery for 20 years, Lizotte considers the departures as “normal,” using the Cornwall Community Museum and Your Arts Council (YAC) Cornwall & The Counties as examples.

“I want to clarify it’s not because of me. I did everything I could do,” said Lizotte. “Most people have a misunderstanding of how a board of directors works – they are my employer and I am the employee. They can fire me if they have cause.”

She attributed some of the turnover to selfinterested volunteers. Lizotte pointed the finger at

a few former board members throughout the years, including Martin for leaving just months after her artwork showed in the gallery.

“If an artist gets on the board usually it’s because they want a show, and when the show is over, they quit,” said Lizotte.

The abrupt nature of the mass resignation also created another problem for her.

“Normally, the board of directors recruits new members, but they didn’t,” she said.

Lizotte’s version of recent events at TAG centres around a power struggle between the board and herself: “They totally cut me off of any decisionmaking and started micromanaging. Then got overwhelmed with the work and couldn’t keep up with it.”

She added that the 2014 board spent $8,000 to review TAG’s financial statements from the last two years.

TAG operates by fundraising initiatives and other revenue streams, including public money provided by the City of Cornwall.

In 2013 TAG received $55,000 in taxpayer money to continue to operate a gallery on Pitt Street and applied for $75,000 last year.

For Hebert, a major highlight of the two years she spent as president of the TAG board of directors was helping to significantly improve the process for submitting funding applications.

But even that couldn’t help some shortcomings.

TAG administration failed to complete its application before the fall deadline for the 2013 city budget and very nearly missed out on municipal funding.

Meanwhile, Roy resigned because of a change in employment that prevented her from attending meetings. Lizotte referred to her as a “no-show board member.”

When asked about the board’s relationship with the executive director, Roy replied: “I’d rather not go there.”

We treat people of all ages for a variety of painful conditions! Treatments vary from shoulder rotator cuff injuries, to back-hip-thigh issues, to bunions and other foot problems. “I am too young to have pain like this”, is an expression voiced often by those whom we treat. It doesn’t have to be that way.

Problems with your body may begin long before symptoms of pain and/or numbness ever materialize.

The human body has the inherent ability to block pain on a daily basis. This feature is a coping mechanism, designed to help us function with as little pain as possible. This mechanism is good in a way, letting us live our lives with less, or no pain at all for most days. We all have a certain threshold to pain, and we feel pain when that threshold is crossed. However, potential damaging conditions may go unknown to us and untreated because of a high pain threshold.

This situation often causes more serious, potentially damaging effects to occur.

Consider Sciatica (ache down back of leg and/or pins and needles into the foot) for example. The very first time most people ever experience an initial bout of sciatica, they were likely under the age of fifty. It caused grief for a few weeks; perhaps some therapy was implemented to help with the symptoms, and then it was gone. However, many, once again experienced the pain of the condition and wondered why. The problem is that the actual cause of the sciatica may never have been identified and adequately corrected.

CORNWALL, Ontario - There will be at least two challengers for the federal Liberal nomination in the Stormont-Dundas-South Glengarry riding.

Corey Kalsi, 35, made it official: he will be running against incumbent Conservative MP Guy Lauzon in the October 19th election.

Nearly 40 people were at the Knights of Columbus hall in Cornwall Wednesday (Jan. 21) night for the riding association’s spaghetti supper/announcement event.

“In short, what I want to do is bring the com-

munity focus to the office of MP,” said Kalsi.

Twenty-six years ago, his parents opened Kalrim Cycles and Sports in South Glengarry, a division of Kalrim Industries Limited where he now serves as executive vice-president.

Kalsi is a teacher with the Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario. He earned an Honours Bachelor of Arts in history, a Bachelor of Education, and an Advanced Bachelor’s Degree in education at Nipissing University.

Kalsi has also sat on the Cornwall Hospital Foundation board of directors.

He believes his education, professional background, efforts as a volunteer, and life experiences give him the necessary tools to take on

‘Bad’ news often trumps the ‘good’ except this week TODD LIHOU

attended what they thought was a domestic dispute instead found themselves witnessing first-hand the plight of the poor in Cornwall.

A woman suffering from dementia had begun an argument with her husband concerning pudding of all things, and the cops were called to referee. Police officers found the cupboards and refrigerator nearly bare.

Things had gotten so bad that the husband had been forced to pawn his wedding ring to buy groceries.

(As an aside, you have to be pretty cold to accept a wedding ring attached to a 54-yearold marriage for a few measly bucks at a pawn shop, but I guess business is business).

The cops stepped up to the plate, and the entire team (including civilians) pitched in to raise money for groceries, and even bought the wedding ring back from the clutches of the pawn shop.

The story exploded online. We’ve had more shares, likes and clicks than we can shake a stick at.

It shows you that “good” news can travel just as fast, perhaps even quicker, than the bad news.

Sometimes – just not that often.

A few days earlier we reported on the plight of Mike Scott, a local family man that is fighting for his life in an Ottawa hospital bed.

As a journalist (hack?) in a small community I’ve often felt the barbs that come from readers and critics, who suggest we’re only out to exploit the misfortunes of others to sell newspapers and stir the pot.

Likewise I have made the point that socalled “bad news” is exactly what people look for.

I can guarantee you the clicks associated with cops and robbers, city hall scandals and house fires will far outstrip bake sales, donations and chivalry on our website.

In other words – you read the “bad news” more than the “good.”

Sorry, but it’s true.

We’d like to think we write plenty of “good news” stories over here in the bunker that is our newsroom…they get just as much play on our website and social media accounts, but often fewer people are paying attention.

Except this week.

Almost as an afterthought, Coun. Andre Rivette rose at the end of Monday night’s council meeting to recount an incident that took place on the weekend concerning the Cornwall police.

As I write this Mike still has not roused himself from a medically-induced coma, despite doctors’ efforts to do so. There are no signs of brain damage, but Mike is one very ill individual who will require months of care to have any quality of life.

That story, too, took off when we reported it.

Not because people are rubbernecking, but because (I think) they want to help. Fundraising efforts are underway to help the family combat the costs of driving to Ottawa and other financial pressures associated with Mike’s care.

All of us are spreading the word about Mike’s condition in hopes that people will dig deep to help the family – if you can help, I urge you to do so.

We’re a lot of things in this community. Our average incomes are below the norm, employment remains a sore spot and years after everyone else we finally got ourselves a Wal-Mart Supercentre (it opens Thursday, folks).

We’re also compassionate. Easily the most compassionate community I’ve seen in early 20 years of covering everything from courtroom drama to church socials.

I hope that is a story we can continue to deliver to you amidst all the other carnage that makes up a community newspaper.

Taxpayers foot the bill, but that’s it As a former Domtar employee with 38years of full time service, I retired in 2004 as well as many other former employees. It might surprise people to know that in those ten years our pensions have risen by 0%. You see my Domtar pension only increases if the cost of living exceeds 3.5% in a year. Because the C.O.L has been rising about 2% our pension remains the same as it was 10 years ago.

Dear editor: Here we go again. City of Cornwall councillors are barely settled in their seats when the issue of councillor salaries is front and center. In 2004 councillors were paid 12,626 per year. Then years later it`s now 15,402 for a difference of 22% and now that the consultant’s report has been shelved, they are now trying to get by with a yearly cost of living increase.

Feds bullied Cornwall over tanks: councillor Dear editor: I would like to set the record straight regarding the chemical tanks on our waterfront. The federal government bullied the city of Cornwall and shoved that deal down our throats. At one point Councillor Rivette had even suggested calling in the army to stop them and now he is talking about rules when it comes to dealing with the feds.

The only rule in politics is that there are no rules in politics, especially when it comes to the

federal government owing us money for the damage that they have done to our gorgeous waterfront.

Our city is in desperate need of cash and we need to use every angle possible to get extra money, without raising taxes. We are short over 5 million dollars in our capital reserves and now is the time to push the feds for help.

She remembers a Mrs. Cousineau, who had a farm in the Gloucester-Sixth streets area, herding her cattle to a pasture at the future army training centre site between Marlborough and what is now McConnell Avenue.

The hill on Gloucester Street (between Fifth

and Sixth streets) was a favourite spot for sledding during winter. “We’d use cardboard to slide on,” she said. “We could go right down to Fourth Street. There was no traffic on Fourth Street in those days.”

There are people who are fun to be around.

Eddy Hebert, who died last week at age 80, was one of them.

He was a sharp businessman who mastered the restaurant/bar trade from the bottom up, at one time serving as assistant manager of the Cornwallis Hotel when it was the city’s entertainment hub. He opened Coco’s Restaurant (now Casa Paolo) on Vincent Massey Drive in the early 1980s.

He was one of several local residents who stepped up to the plate and purchased the Cornwall Royals from Paul Emard, who kept a piece of the action, in 1985.

Eddy was quick with a quip.

He had been a struggling professional boxer in his younger days. When his ring career ended he took up refereeing and judging.

How good a boxer was he? Well, it depends on how one measures success. Eddy said he didn’t make a lot of money from the win column but soon parlayed his business skills into some easy cash.

“I started selling advertising on the bottom of my (boxing) shoes,” he said with a laugh. ***** Billy Bingley stared death in the face just after Christmas and the experience has given him a new outlook on life and the quality of care at Cornwall Community Hospital.

Bingley was rushed to CCH with chest pains. It was his second heart attack in 10

years, almost to the day, but this time is was a lot more serious, if there is such a thing as a heart attack that isn’t serious.

He was diagnosed, treated and stabilized at CCH before being transferred to the Ottawa Heart Institute where a triple bypass was performed. He spent 13 days at the Heart Institute.

“When I went into the hospital (CCH) my blood pressure was going through the roof. I was stroke material. In fact, I probably shouldn’t have survived,” said Bingley, who can’t say enough about the quality of care he received at CCH, right from the time he arrived at the ER until he was transferred to Ottawa.

“The care I received at CCH and the Heart Institute was unbelievable,” said Bingley. “You hear people knocking the local hospital (CCH) and complaining about wait times, but the care I received was outstanding.”

Based on his experience, Bingley said we are lucky to have this kind of health care and the folks who care for us in our backyard. ***** SPORTS STUFF The Ciccarelli brothers, Larry and Rob, have sold the Sarnia Sting to former NHLer Derian Hatcher and Senators’ forward David Legwand. CORNWALL, Ontario - A Cornwall Community Police Service constable is shot rock for nationals at a seven-team provincial tournament at the Cornwall Curling Centre.

Law enforcement officers rallied for some friendly competition at the 2015 Ontario Police Curling Association provincial championships (Jan. 21-25).

CCPS Const. Matt Dupuis, event organizer and competitive curler, said the tourney drew a lot of attention to Cornwall as officers enjoyed the six-sheet splendor of the city’s curling centre. The event also raised funds for the Tourette Syndrome Foundation of Canada.

Dupuis played with fellow cops Andrew McCrae (Brockville), Darrell Blakely (Cornwall), and Rick Marcil (Ottawa).

“This event builds a lot of camaraderie between officers and will bring notoriety to the area for police curling,” said Ted McIntyre, vicepresident of the Canadian Police Curling National.

The winners advance to the CPCN national championships hosted between March 21-28 in Sudbury.

Transit améliore ses itinéraires pour desservir le nouveau complexe commercial SmartCentres Cornwall Transit améliore certains de ses itinéraires pour desservir le nouveau complexe commercial SmartCentres.

Situé au coin des rues Ninth et Cumberland, le complexe SmartCentres compte ouvrir au public le jeudi 29 janvier. À compter du lundi 26 janvier, les autobus des itinéraires Cumberland (no 2) et Brookdale (no 3), ainsi que les autobus de l’itinéraire du service communautaire (no 61) commenceront à s’arrêter au complexe SmartCentres. Par souci de commodité pour les passagers, un nouvel abribus a été construit à proximité du coin sud-ouest du complexe.

Voici les changements prévus : • Les autobus de l’itinéraire Cumberland (no 2) desserviront le centre directement à partir des rues Pitt et Second. Ils entreront dans le complexe SmartCentres de la rue Seventh, traverseront le complexe, suivront la rue Ninth en direction est et se dirigeront vers le nord dans la rue Cumberland.

• Les autobus de l’itinéraire Brookdale (no 3) entreront dans le complexe SmartCentres de la rue Ninth et ils poursuivront leur chemin vers le terminus central aux rues Pitt et Second.

• Les autobus du service communautaire (no 61) desserviront le centre du complexe SmartCentres.

Les autres itinéraires de Cornwall Transit ne changent pas et les autobus continueront à desservir le Centre Brookdale. « Ces améliorations s’assureront que les passagers de Cornwall Transit ont un accès complet au complexe SmartCentres », a indiqué Len Tapp, directeur de division, Transports. « Nous prévoyons qu’il s’agira d’un arrêt populaire pour tous les passagers – les habitués et les nouveaux utilisateurs de notre service. » Pour obtenir des renseignements supplémentaires sur les changements apportés aux itinéraires, les tarifs et les horaires de transport, ou d’autres renseignements sur Cornwall Transit, veuillez consulter www.

Collège d’Alfred: une réponse en février L’avenir du Collège d’Alfred sera très sérieusement étudié et le gouvernement donnera des suites au rapport Godbout.

C’est ce qu’indique la ministre déléguée aux Affaires francophones, Madeleine Meilleur, qui croit que l’établissement doit changer ses pratiques s’il compte survivre à long terme.

«C’est lors d’une crise qu’il faut prendre un pas en arrière pour prendre plusieurs pas de l’avant. Il y a une crise, comme il y a eu une crise à Montfort. Les gens se sont levés et on a trouvé une recette gagnante.»

D’abord, selon Mme Meilleur, le jumelage du Collège d’Alfred avec l’Université de Guelph n’était pas la meilleure des idées. Elle voit la situation temporaire d’un bon œil, bien qu’il faille trouver une solution permanente à la crise.

«Ce n’était pas une bonne décision d’un gouvernement précédent de jumeler un collège francophone à une université anglophone. La Cité et Boréal y sont associés et c’est une bonne nouvelle.»

Le rédacteur du rapport, Marc Godbout, a étudié diverses possibilités, notamment ce qui se fait à l’Institut en technologies agroalimentaires du Québec (ITAQ), une sommité dans le monde agricole au Canada.

«Il y a eu des rencontres entre M. Godbout et la direction du Collège à La Pocatière. Qu’est-ce qui nous manque pour avoir pareil succès ? En terme de population, ce n’est pas la même chose entre le Québec et l’Ontario, mais je crois qu’on peut s’en inspirer.»

Le recrutement à l’international et le

développement de la recherche sont deux options qui pourraient aider le Collège d’Alfred à attirer plus d’étudiants. Une aide du gouvernement fédéral serait la bienvenue, compte tenu de la nature du Collège.

«L’agriculture se transforme et il faut s’adapter. C’est le seul collège d’agriculture francophone à l’extérieur du Québec. On souhaite attirer des partenaires à la table.

Les pays qui sont en voie de développement ont besoin de cette formation. Alors pourquoi ne pas aller à l’international pour recruter des étudiants. Avec l’aide, il va falloir plus de

Les trésors du Diocèse: une exposition des archives diocésaines Commençant le 17 avril et pendant deux semaines, dans la chapelle de la Cocathédrale de La Nativité, le Diocèse exposera quelques-uns de ses nombreux trésors. Plusieurs de ces objets incluront la crosse originale utilisée par Mgr Alexander Macdonell, premier évêque du diocèse; une bague épiscopale donnée par le roi Geoge IV à Mgr Alexander Macdonell, premier évêque du Haut-Canada. et une collection impressionnante de cartes postales de la Terre Sainte illustrant le voyage que y fit Mgr Brodeur.

Messe d’action de grâce et réception Il y aura une messe d’action de grâce le 21 mai 2015 à la Cocathédrale de La Nativité suivie d’une réception au Centre Catholique Agora.

À l’école Rose des Vents, beaucoup d’élèves aiment écrire. Alors le Club des petits crayons a été créé pour répondre à ce besoin. Le 23 janvier 1890, Rome créait le Diocèse d’Alexandria (le nom de Cornwall a été ajouté à celui d’Alexandria en 1976) en y incluant les comtés de Glengarry et Stormont. Le décret, émis par le Pape Léo XIII, nommait le Père Alexander Macdonell (il portait le mème nom que le premier évêque du Haut-Canada,) comme premier évêque de ce nouveau diocèse. Mgr Macdonell, qui choisit la paroisse de St. Finnan pour siège episcopal, devenait le pasteur d’un des plus petits diocèses du pays, comptant seulement 21,550 catholiques répartis dans 10 paroisses et desservis par 12 prêtres. Avant sa création en 1890, Glengarry et Stormont faisaient partie du diocèse de Kingston.

L’année d’avant, les rumeurs circulaient mentionnant que les comtés seraient ajoutés à l’archidiocèse d’Ottawa. Afin de retarder cet arrangement, l’évêque de Kingston, Mgr James Vincent Cleary, a appuyé les évêques de l’Ontario dans leur demande d’un nouveau diocèse écossais pour l’est de l’Ontario.

Au cours des 125 années passées, l’Église catholique, par l’entremise de ses membres, fut à même de fonder un bon nombre d’institutions importantes dans Glengarry et Stormont. Il s’agit de l’Hôtel-Dieu (maintenant l’Hôpital Communautaire de Cornwall), le Collège Classique, l’Académie St-Michel et le Centre Agapé.

“Un retour à l’histoire me donne des ressources abondantes pour mieux planifier l’avenir,” dit Mgr Marcel Damphousse, l’évêque actuel d’Alexandria-Cornwall.

The annual Raisin River canoe race from St. Andrews West to Williamstown is just a spring thaw away. I hope that what you are reading will awaken some fond memories of long ago paddling adventures and prompt you to fondle your paddle and check your life jacket.

What led to me write on this topic in the middle of a brutal winter cold snap? It was an old copy of the book “Paddle to the Sea” sent

evoked memories of our own travels down the Nipigon River, along Great Lakes shores, along the St. Lawrence River to the Gulf of St. Lawrence and the Atlantic Ocean.

As a Christmas present to Juliet Gill, my wife, I carved a 27inch “Paddle to the Sea” canoe. A representation of Keesha, my late dog, sits amidships, just as she did for 12 years. On it we inscribe an on-going list of bodies of water we have paddled together.

One of the models used in the movie is to be found in the Peterborough Canoe Museum. The citizens of Nipigon, Ontario created a theme park which attempts to bring the book back to life.

My sixteen-foot canoe has travelled many of the bodies of water depicted in Holling’s book and Mason’s movie. In the middle of this winter, the book and a YouTube of the movie

to me by an acquaintance in Montreal who was culling her late mother’s library.

The children’s 1941 book written by Holling C. Holling inspired Canada’s late canoeing guru Bill Mason, to create a movie which tells a similar story using real-life images. Bill is the father of Canada’s current canoeing promotor and authority, Becky Mason.

The original story tells of a young Northern Ontario Indian boy who carves a toy canoe and a tiny paddler, then sends it on its way to be make its way through the Great Lakes,

BLEACH Many types of bleach are available for household use. Listed from the strongest to the weakest, they are: Chlorine bleach: Liquid sodium hypochlorite bleach, such as Clorox or Purex. It is a potent bleach and powerful oxidizer, useful in the laundry to whiten and remove spots from whites and colourfast fabrics.

Color removers: Designed to prepare fabrics for re-dyeing, color removers can also be

effective stain removers. Very useful in removing unwanted dyes from whites that have been washed with coloured items by mistake.

RIT Color Remover is a common one, available at drug and grocery stores.

Hydrogen peroxide: A mild bleach that is effective yet safe for most fabrics and surfaces.

Get the three per cent solution sold as an antiseptic, not the stronger solution used for bleaching hair. Don’t buy too much, as it loses strength when stored for long periods.

Oxygen bleaches: Oxygen or “all-fabric” bleaches, such as Clorox ll and Snowy can be used to brighten and remove stains from all colourfast fabrics. Ammonia, lemon juice, white vinegar and good old sunlight. Mild bleaches that are useful in many stain-removal procedures.

CORNWALL, Ontario - The Cornwall Chamber Young Professionals mingled with elected officials over wine, gourmet appetizers, and live music at a meet and greet event.

Members of the business community packed Moustache Joe’s for the opportunity to network with Cornwall Mayor Leslie O’Shaugnessy and several city councillors on Thursday, Jan. 22.

“It might be intimidating for young professionals to contact council directly, so this gave them an outlet,” said Megan Brownell, events coordinator for the Cornwall and Area Chamber of Commerce.

Councillors Carilyne Hebert, Elaine MacDonald, Mark A. MacDonald, Brock Frost, Bernadette Clement, and Justin Towndale were in attendance.

“Networking is all about face-to-face, name recognition, branding, and marketing, so the more people are recognized, the more business contacts they generate,” said Frost, who is also a local real estate agent.

The Young Professionals program encourages business savvy individuals to network both with each other and some of the more established people within the community.

“I think it was a great idea that we get to meet with the mayor and councillors,” said David Booyink, Seaway Hyundai sales consultant, as he sipped a drink with Frost.

O’Shaughnessy applauded the initiative for helping to make a sound investment in Cornwall’s future business leaders.

“This event is a great idea - I’m happy to attend,” said O’Shaughnessy.

“Any opportunity for the mayor and council to talk to the residents of Cornwall, especially young professionals, is good news. We have to understand that even as older people or politicians we all learn from each other.”

Lesley Lang, program member, said the meet and greet was meant to encourage business savvy young adults to be more involved in the community.

“This event empowers them to reach out and e-mail or talk in public with the mayor and councillors to feel like they’re more part of the decision-making process,” said Lang, director of the board at Cornwall and The Counties Community Futures Development Corporation and senior account manager with Business Development Bank of Canada (BDC).

Over two dozen people indulged in complimentary hors d’oeuvres, courtesy of Moustache Joe’s, as local musician Robert Cote provided the entertainment.

A political speed dating portion allowed guests to ask the mayor and councillors a series of questions, ranging from waterfront issues to their favourite local spots to visit.

“Some of them are pretty loaded questions,” laughed Hebert.

They included, ‘What are the plans on the horizon for the waterfront?’ ‘Favourite spot to relax?’ and ‘What song best describes your work ethic?’

Her answer to No. 3: ‘She Works Hard for the Money.’

The fourth Young Professionals event is scheduled for March.

CORNWALL, Ontario - It will cost the city about $50,000 to sponsor the Super Bowl of country fairs that will descend on the Cornwall area later this year.

The International Plowing Match (IPM), known in agriculture circles as the late-summer Mecca of farming, will take place in Finch from Sept. 22 to 26 and organizers are hitting up local agencies and municipalities for sponsorships.

City council approved a sponsorship package Monday night, and the services required could add up to some $50,000, including inkind donations.

Among the items on the IPM wish list are EMS services ($18,000 cost to the city), a regional tent display sponsorship ($15,000), shuttle service to and from the event ($3,000) and a slew of in-kind donations like picnic tables, chairs and social media promotions to name a few.

Some 70,000 visitors and hundreds of

business people are expected to attend the plowing match, with hotels and RV parks already booked for the festivities.

With that in mind, councillors were faced with a no-brainer type of decision.

“As we know it’s a big event – it’s great for the area. Cornwall will reap a lot of benefits from the hotels and restaurants and everything else,” said Coun. Andre Rivette.

Bob Peters, a senior development officer with the city, added many components of the sponsorship agreement, if council agrees to it, can be built into the 2015 municipal budget items without adding extra spending - with the exception of EMS coverage.

The cost adding EMS coverage to the event will add money to the 2015 municipal budget, but Rivette suggested those funds could be saved elsewhere.

“You may have to cancel a conference in Toronto,” said Rivette.

City council will still have to green light the 2015 budget before the IPM sponsorship package can be finalized.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The city is partnering with the Cornwall Community Hospital and a local dialysis clinic to make a pitch for senior government funding with an aim to alleviating pressure on its taxed Handi-Transit service.

The so-called “Transportation Pilot Grant Program” invites municipalities across the province to work with local community organizations to propose a community transportation project. The local project would include adding an additional eight hours of service per week to Handi-Transit to help those with special needs who require help travelling to appointments at the hospital or dialysis clinic. The Handi-Transit service, which helps transport individuals in wheelchairs and the like, is currently operating at capacity.

Transit manager Len Tapp said in order for more people to access the service, existing clients would either have to move out of the city, or pass away.

“If you gave me 10 more buses tomorrow they would be filled in about 20 minutes,” he told city

council Monday night.

“This sounds like a terrific partnership,” said Coun. Bernadette Clement.

If the city is successful in securing $100,000 in funding for the project, it would be spread over two years. After the grant is done Tapp is hopeful that a ridership spike will offset the costs of folding the increased service capacity into his annual budget. The city must file a request for the funding by the end of the week. Queen’s Park will make a decision later concerning approval.

“I’m cautiously optimistic,” said Tapp. “But if we don’t apply for it, we won’t know.”
