Former Cornwall Alderman and World War II veteran passes away Nick Seebruch

nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Former Cornwall Alderman and World War II veteran Gerrold “Gerry” Vokes Grant passed away peacefully at his home on Wednesday, Aug. 29, 2018, he was 94-years-old. Predeceased by his wife Dorothy, Grant is survived by his son Thomas (Kathleen), his grandson John and numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Grant joined the army in 1943 at the age of 19. Two months after D-Day, Grant was shipped over to France with the Canadian Grenadier Guards Tank Regiment, 22nd Canadian Armoured Regiment, 4th Canadian Armoured Division. With the Canadian Grenadiers Guards, Grant saw action in the closing of the Falaise gap, the Liberation of Holland and the invasion of Germany. During the Battle of Hochwald, Grant remembered attacking a small farm complex guarded by German tanks. Typhoon air support was called in to attack the farm and the Grenadiers gave them their coordinates. “As I was observing one of the Typhoons approaching the targets, I realized that it was lined up exactly with the sight of my machine gun,” Grant would one-day tell his son Thomas. “We were the target! The Typhoon had got disoriented and fired everything it had at us. It missed our tanks and one of the ordinance

exploded only a few yards from our tank. We were so surprised by it that we did not have time to get back into the tank and close the hatches. The explosion and impact in the muddy grounds near the tank case a large amount of mud and dirt to cover our uniforms and it entered the tank through all the open doors. There was mud everywhere and nothing was white any longer. I was so mad. The next day, an RCAF observer joined our tank crew. He was going to ensure this was not going to happen again.” After spending nine months on the front line, Grant was wounded by shrapnel during the Battle of Bad Zwischenahn. After recuperating, he returned to Canada in December of 1945. Grant first visited Cornwall in 1945, he would meet and eventually marry his wife Dorothy here and worked in the CIL plant in their chlorine production unit, eventually retiring as Supervisor of Transportation and Supply in 1985. After his retirement, Grant served as City Alderman from 1986 to 1988. Friends and family wishing to celebrate the memory of Gerry Grant were welcomed at the McArthur Bros. & MacNeil Funeral Home & Chapel on Friday, Sept. 7 and a funeral service was held at Knox-St. Paul’s United Church on the morning of Saturday, Sept. 8. at 11 a.m. Gerry Grant will be interned at Woodlawn Cemetery in Cornwall. Memorial donations to the Children’s Christmas Fund will be gratefully acknowledged.

election 2018

Council Candidate Profiles 2018 Ryan Acheson

Being born and raised in Cornwall I have a deep love for this city. However, City Council is about more than just a love for Cornwall, it’s about building a community that we can all be proud to live in. Times are changing, and City Council needs some newer, younger blood. With a background in business and politics, I can be a new City Council voice for the people of candidate this city. If elected I will Ryan Acheson fight for investments in arts & culture, for Council to be more accessible through town hall meetings, and savings in the budget without unnecessarily cutting services.

Eric Bergeron

I have spent my career creating innovative companies. Four years ago I started Smart Greens where we grew plants in shipping containers. Our company attracted attention from around the globe and put Cornwall at the forefront of agricultural technology. I’m an innovator and Cornwall needs to take a giant leap forCity Council ward if we are to candidate become the city we all Eric Bergeron want it to be. Imagine what could be done in the next 4 years … We can do better Cornwall. Nous pouvons faire mieux, Cornwall. Join me at UpstartCornwall.ca

Kelly Bergeron Carol (Escobar) Hi, I’m Kelly Bergeron. I’m running for Cornwall City Council and here’s why: Boileau I believe that we can do more to create eco-

nomic growth in our city. I am the Executive Director of the Cornwall Innovation Centre, where we are dedicated to growing local, and innovative start-ups. Through provincial funding, we are building the Ontario Emerging Jobs City Council Institute, an educationcandidate Kelly Bergeron al institution launching admissions this fall in Cornwall. If elected I would use my experience to grow jobs, ensure the City’s revenue is spent wisely, support the art centre fundraising initiatives and push to develop our waterfront, which is the key to Cornwall’s future. I am thrilled to be running as a candidate for Cornwall City Council and am looking forward to discussing the issues affecting our city. Thank you! Kelly Bergeron

I’m Carol Boileau, retired secondary Math, FSL and literacy teacher since 1981. I have lived and worked in Cornwall all of my life. Presently I am in a wheelchair, thus accessibility issues are a priority to me. I am on three City committees, including the City Council Accessibility, Heritage candidate and Senior Friendly Carol (Escobar) Committees, and I’m Boileau also a board member for the community’s French radio station. Besides accessibility, I will focus on the city’s budget by debating issues while encouraging the best for citizens. On Oct. 22, I ask for your vote in order to be City Councillor.

EDITOR’S NOTE: Starting this week, Cornwall Seaway News will begin running profiles of the candidates for City Councillor. Each City of Cornwall council candidate was invited to send us a short description of themselves and a headshot. We will be running these profiles over the next few weeks in alphabetical order according to last name.

election 2018

Council Candidate Profiles 2018 My name is Denis Carr and I am running for city councilor in October. I love this city. I live here, my family lives here and I want to see us continue to progress. I have more than 20 years of experience as your city councillor. During this time, I have focused on strengthening Cornwall and preparing it for change. One example of this City Council was helping to form candidate Heart of the City, a Denis Carr revitalization program that has seen 228 applications approved and $67.2 million in physical improvements to our city. Heart of the City’s brownfield revitalization program has resulted in 29 applications totaling nearly $50 million in physical improvements to our community. I have played a significant role in this kind of progress. I want to work with you to continue to make Cornwall a better place. I need and appreciate your support in this next election.

Ellen Crothers

Brent Charles Hello, I am a Cornwall tax payer of 20 plus years, have worked for 30 plus years in technology and 10 plus years as an instructor at NCTI. I am fed up with wasteful municipal spending. Say no to $5 million Art Center, no to runaway police spending, RFP to OPP. Say yes to Sunday bus service and local City Council cannabis store fronts. I candidate campaign to review all Brent Charles municipal managers responsibilities and performances. The status quo has to go!

My name is Ellen Crothers and I have lived in Cornwall for the past three years. Before that I lived in Lancaster, ON for 15 years. I started a toy drive in Lancaster called Mathew’s Toy Mountain. It raises toys for families in need during the Christmas season. It has been running successfully for the past 12 years. Some of the posiCity Council tive changes I would candidate like to make are: Ellen Crothers Lowering taxes and continuing to maintain Cornwall as an affordable place to raise a family. Make our waterfront more attractive to tourists and look into setting up the Seaway Train. The train would connect Cornwall with Montreal and Ottawa.

Patrick Dussault

My name is Patrick Dussault. I will retire from the Ontario Provincial Police after 30 years of service in Oct. 2018 and I am looking forward to serving the citizens of Cornwall as a municipal councillor. I have been living in the area since 1991 and I have gained a reputation of integrity and hard work, while getting involved in the community in City Council several organizations. candidate Some of my goals and Patrick Dussault objectives include fair contract for municipal employees and city taxpayers upon renewal, and a freeze on salaries of the Mayor, council members and high executives such as the C.A.O. and the G. M. of Corporate Services for the duration of the term.

Seaway Valley Wrestling first show coming October 20 Nick Seebruch

nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Seaway Valley Wrestling (SVW) held a press conference at the Nav Centre on Wednesday, Aug. 29 to announce their first show, which will be taking place at the centre on Oct. 20. “The words ‘pro wrestling’ have not been spoken in a very long time in the City of Cornwall,” said SVW Commissioner Alain Allaire. “Cornwall was said to have the most boisterous fans around. I know it’s not dead in this city and I’m going to prove it,” he promised.” Allaire announced that SVW’s first show would see eight matches on the card, including

Big Time Pro Wrestling Champion Big Daddy D’Roy defending his title against “The Immaculate” Ray St-Jean. Local boy Rex Orion will also be making his hometown debut against Cecil Nix. St. Jean was unimpressed. St. Jean refused to sit at the table with the rest of the wrestlers, instead choosing to relax in the recliner chair provided by Surplus Furniture & Mattress Warehouse. “The only reason I’m here is because they’re paying me a big fat paycheck,” St. Jean said. The champ Big Daddy D’Roy and St. Jean exchanged words before Big Daddy D’Roy was attacked from behind by former champ Randy Berry. The intensity between these two

wrestlers will surely make for a great inaugural main event, but the question remains, will Randy Berry intervene on behalf Ray St-Jean and help him steal the title away from Big Daddy D’Roy. After the dust settled, Allaire held a draw for the recliner from Surplus Furniture & Mattress Warehouse which was won by Steve McIntyre. Tickets for the event are available at Fantasy Realm where fans can also get their SVW merchandise, or they can contact Commissioner Allaire. From Peace Tower to Cornwall, local family receives giant Canadian Flag Nick Seebruch

nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Thirteen years ago, Geannin Pilon and her family were visiting Parliament Hill in Ottawa and took a chance that would lead to a long wait, and a big red and white reward. The family put their names down on a waiting list to receive a flag from the top of the Peace Tower in the Centre Block of the Parliament buildings in Ottawa. Geannin had almost thought that the flag would never arrive, when finally, earlier this summer she received a thick envelope. She knew immediately what it was, and waited until her adult children could be together before

opening it. The flag is so large that it could almost cover her garage door. “She couldn’t believe it when she finally got it,” her daughter Liette said. “It is bigger than the bed.” The flag she received was flown above the Peace Tower on Jan. 28, 2018. Geannin and her family were lucky in a way that their wait was only 13 years. They were informed in a letter from the government that the flag program is so popular that now, Canadians have to wait more than 80 years to receive a Peace Tower Flag. Liette says that her mom plans to hang the flag in front of her garage every Canada Day.

OHL hockey returns to the Cornwall Civic Complex Nick Seebruch

nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - For the first time in 25 years, OHL hockey was once again played on the ice at the Ed Lumley Arena in the Cornwall Civic Complex. The Ottawa 67s faced off against the Kingston Frontenacs in a game that had people lined up in front of the ticket box and out the door, even well after the puck had dropped. Opening the game with the ceremonial puck drop was former OHL coach Brian Killrea and Cornwall’s own Derek Grant. Killrea remembered playing against Cornwall’s OHL team, the Cornwall Royals when he coached the 67s. “The Royals were always a good and com-

petitive team,” Killrea remembered. Killrea felt that given the right amount of effort, that OHL hockey could return to Cornwall. “It’s gonna take someone with enthusiasm to knock down the barriers to bringing a team here,” he said. In the crowd for the game were many fans wearing old Cornwall Royals jerseys and waving Royals flags. On the ice, The 67s won a hard fought exhibition game against the Frontenacs, winning 3-2 in an overtime shootout. CORNWALL, Ontario – The 22nd annual Shorty Jenkins Curling Classic will be sweeping through the city from Sept. 12 to 16. The World Curling Tour, presented by World Financial Group, will host 42 of the top curling teams from across the globe, including Olympic gold medalists from the U.S.A. and Canada. “It’s by far the biggest international event we have on a regular basis in Cornwall,” said John Dilabio, Co-Chair of the tournament. Matt Camm of Cornwall will be amongst the notable athletes in attendance, playing for John Epping’s revamped squad. According to Dilabio, Camm is ranked eighth in the world. “We have a strong field of players, which is

really good considering it’s the year after the Olympics,” said Dilabio. Dilabio explained that this year the tournament increased the ladies’ fields from 15 to 18 teams. A livestream of all games played on one of the sheets will be broadcasted online for the first time ever. The tournament will also receive more coverage on television. “We haven’t had that ability in the past few years,” said Dilabio. Despite this, the official event website received 42,000 hits last year. A prize lot of $92,000 will be up for grabs throughout the tournament, making the event the largest prize money opportunity outside of grand slam events. Dilabio said that the event and its success wouldn’t be possible without the generous sponsorship, support

OPINION

An eye on education Nick Seebruch nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

With less than two months to go until the municipal election, things are about to heat up, but I want to bring more attention to a forgotten campaign, and that is the campaign for school trustees. I had written previously that all trustees in Cornwall were running unopposed, this was before the nomination period had ended, but not that nominations are closed, we still unfortunately will see all of our local trustees acclaimed. This is not to see that all of our incumbent trustees are unworthy of re-election, but given the seismic changes that took place in the Catholic and public school boards this past term, and looking ahead at what is to come, it is surprising that this trustee election has been so quiet. The past term saw schools slated for closure, other schools were amalgamated and some properties were traded between the boards. This coming term will see the oldest high school in Ontario, CCVS, close and be merged with St. Lawrence Secondary School into a new superschool that will be completed by 2022. All of the vigorous public engagement that was seen in 2016 seems to have just evaporated two years later in Cornwall. In the

United Counties there are at least three people running for Wendy MacPherson’s old trustee seat. In the Counties we have seen people who were deeply involved in the public boards 2016 restructuring process stay involved to ensure that the voters can weigh-in on their issues. With such big decisions being made in Cornwall and with more still to come I encourage voters to not forget about their trustee elections. For the public board David MacDonald is running unopposed for reelection, voters should make him aware of the issues that matter to them because after all, it is their tax money. Four years ago, I was volunteering for a candidate in Ottawa at a polling station as an observer, I was surprised to see how many voters had no idea which school board they paid taxes to and I’m sure that many of them did not know how much they paid every year. Having covered City Hall in Cornwall for two years, I get the impression that taxes being low and being spent wisely is something that is important to the citizens of this city. My question is however, do most people in Cornwall know which school board they pay taxes to? And, do they know how much they pay in taxes? The amount that the average homeowner

pays every year in taxes is easy to find out, the City of Cornwall has a handy calculator on their website. The average home in Cornwall is valued at roughly $166,000 and there for the average taxpayer who owns that home will pay just shy of $300 a year to their school board. This education rate is set

by the province every year. Currently, 10.5 percent of the total municipal property tax paid in a year goes to the school board. Readers, what do you think of your local trustees? What would you change about education in Cornwall? Email me a Letter to the Editor at nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

Canada should consider revoking Suu Kyi’s honorary citizenship

Canada should seriously consider revoking the honorary Canadian citizenship granted to Myanmar’s leader. The ethnic cleansing in that Asian country continues. A report on ethnic cleansing of Rohingya Muslims I was released a while ago. Aung San Suu Kyi must accept the blame over genocide of helpless Muslims. Canada’s Prime Minister Justin Trudeau had asked a prominent Liberal Bob Rae, also a

former Ontario premier, to look into great details about the Rohingya crisis. Ray was frank about the crisis. He pointed out politicians in Myanmar (formerly Burma) and also the honorary Canadian, should be investigated by International Criminal Court of Justice over possible war crimes. “Whoever is found responsible, whether in the civilian government or the military government, for what has happened should be responsible. I don’t exclude anybody from that,” Rae said. More than 900,000 Muslims fled to Bangladesh to escape a brutal campaign by Myanmar’s military. A renowned international human rights

lawyer and a former Liberal cabinet minister Irwin Cotler has already on the government to revoke Suu Kyi’s Canadian citizenship. Rae’s 39 page report made interesting reading and should be of concern to all peace loving people around the world. The de facto leader Suu Kyi has been widely criticized for not speaking out against the atrocities committed against the Rohingya. This crisis has not been settled. Bangladesh, with its limited resource, has become home for thousands of refugees. To this day, they still trek to Bangladesh to escape being killed or burned alive. Amnesty International has also called for a full investigation. By not revoking Suu Kyi’s citizenship we are

also cheapening the honorary citizenship. Suu Kyi continues to be stripped of other honors around the world. Even Winnipeg removed a reference to Suu Kyi in one of the exhibits. Victoria in British Columbia removed the statue of Sir John Alexander Macdonald’s statue from outside the city hall for oppression of indigenous people. Macdonald was our first Prime Minister and regarded as Canada’s greatest leader. None of the major political leaders in Canada have stepped up and called for stripping Suu Kyi of the honor. Police might have been a tad charitable on Sept. 6, 1938 when they called two crooks who hit the sleepy village of Finch twice in the same night “professional safe crackers.” Burglar bunglers might have been a better description. Or, perhaps the crooks just had a bad night. First, they attempted to blow open the safe at the Canadian Pacific Railway office during the early morning hours. The sturdy safe door didn’t budge and they beat it out of the office empty-handed. A few minutes later they gave it another shot with plan B. The target was the George L. McLean and Sons garage. Perhaps figuring they didn’t use enough nitroglycerine at the CPR office, they upped the charge. Just as in the CPR attempted heist, the crooks patiently drilled a hole in the combination and inserted the nitro, lit the fuse and took cover. And blow it did. The door came flying off the steel safe. It traveled across the office and crashed through the front window. It landed on the front yard. Pieces of glass traveled 50 feet across the street. They quickly grabbed $25 from a cash box that had been pried open and retreated to a waiting car. Neighbours, shaken from their beds by the thunderous explosion, told police they saw two men running from the garage office and heading north toward the CPR station where police figured they had left their car. Days before several businesses in Cornwall

and surrounding area had been hit by thieves who attempted to break into safes. The crime spree ended with the Finch jobs. Perhaps they got into a new line of work or moved on. ALSO THIS WEEK IN 1938 - Cornwall Collegiate Institute Board was interested in establishing a French course at CCVS. A petition from the St. Jean Baptiste Society urged the board to establish the course as a way to enable English students to become more proficient in French. If enough students showed interest, the board planned to hire a full-time French teacher. ... Stormont MP Lionel Chevrier laid the cornerstone for the new Cornwall Armoury. A copper box containing various regimental documents and papers was placed beneath the stone where it remains to this day. ... The biggest Labour Day parade in the city’s history - sponsored by the Cornwall Trades and Labour Congress - had 2,500 participants and 14 floats. The two-mile long parade finished at St. Lawrence Park with a picnic and field day. ... Central Park pool closed for the summer. Silver Bridge remained open but without a lifeguard. ... A Cornwall Jail inmate who escaped with a companion by climbing the 16-foot courtyard wall was captured two months later in Oneida, N.Y. where he had tried to rob a store. The other escapee remained at large. ... Cornwall council planned to incorporated three blocks of the township. The area was bounded by Fifth, Marlborough, Second and Baldwin. It included the General Hospital and Athletic Grounds. ... Death notices

FORTIER, BEaTRIcE (nee Kennedy) - Mrs. Beatrice (Bea) Fortier at St. Joseph’s Continuing Care Centre, Cornwall, Ontario on Aug. 27, 2018 at the age of 90 years. Beloved wife of the late Ovielda (Joe) Fortier. Loved mother of Carol Lalonde (late Mike), Lynn Compeau (John), Michael Fortier (Carmen), John Fortier (Sharon), Debbie Belmore (Allan), Melodie Coulas (Dave), Jammie Todd Fortier; and the late Suzanne Fortier. Sadly missed by 20 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. Predeceased by her parents, John and Sarah (nee Cardinal) Kennedy; brothers John, Lawrence, Fred and Hubert Kennedy; sisters Rose St-Denis, Julia Bridges, Margaret Hargrove and Florence Belisle. Mom lived and loved life to the fullest. As well, Mom raised and lovingly cared for her 8 children; she did it with grace and a guiding hand. Her sense of humour brightened the darkest of days. She was an avid golfer, bowler, curler and archer. She enjoyed her social time with her many friends playing bridge. No matter how many times the family moved due to Dad’s career, and we moved a lot, Mom always made our house a home. She enjoyed and flourished in many business adventures. Mom had a very tender heart for the many pets to whom she gave a home. We wish her peace on her journey to the Divine Spirit and her last wish be granted. She is finally and eternally at peace. God speed Mom. We would like to thank the Villa staff and nurses for their loving care of Mom and their kind words in our time of need. Her children will honour her with a Celebration of Life gathering. If so desired contributions in her memory to the Alzheimer’s Society would be appreciated by the family. Funeral arrangements entrusted to Wilson Funeral Home, 822 Pitt Street, Cornwall. On line messages of condolence may be made at www.wilsonfuneralhome.ca. 7530540

Buddy Bench Ball aims to prevent bullying CORNWALL, Ontario – For students who experience bullying, having the courage to tell someone may be daunting. The supporters of Girls Night Out are looking to make the process easier by implementing Buddy Benches as beacons of safety in local schools. On Sept. 22, Girls Night Out will be hosting a dance, for all genders, at 7 p.m. at the Army Navy Air Force Club. All funds raised will be put towards the benches. The Buddy Bench program has been a success in parts of the U.S. and Canada, even here in Cornwall, according to Lamarche. If a student is being bullied or struggling with something, they can sit on the bench to signal their feelings. Designated students will then approach them and offer to play, talk or sit

down with a staff member. Benches range between $300 and $700, depending on what the school is allowed to have. Lamarche is currently in the process of reaching out to schools in the area to see if they want to be involved. Depending on the amount fundraised and the number of schools involved, Lamarche will draw the names of the successful schools on the night of the dance. The Buddy Bench dance will start at 7 p.m. and will cost $15 at the door. There will also be a 50/50 draw, the chance to win a wine basket and live karaoke singers. Those interested in purchasing a ticket are encouraged to call Lamarche at 613-363-8948 or email her at nlamarchegirlpower@gmail.com. Go to www.cornwallseawaynews.com for the rest of this great story PLUS additional SN coverage.

Old General Vanier becomes new Sacred Heart Shawna O’Neill

shawna.oneill@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Classes will be in session on Sept. 4 for 354 registered students at the new Sacred Heart in the old General Vanier building. In March, The Catholic District School Board of Eastern Ontario (CDSBEO) purchased the building for $3 million as part of an exchange with the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB) for the Immaculate Conception Catholic School building. After renovations, the school amounted to a $5.2 million price tag.

Let’s

“It was a beautiful partnership that began,” said Natalie Cameron, Superintendent of School Effectiveness for CDSBEO. According to Cameron, the planning process started in March and construction of the General Vanier building commenced in May. In June, St. Columban’s Catholic School closed its doors to amalgamate students to the new Sacred Heart. “It’s going to be a wonderful and beautiful school, and a great opportunity for our students in our board,” said Cameron. The junior kindergarten to grade six school

will consist of 23 teachers and multiple support staff, including teaching assistants and early childhood educators. Cameron and her colleagues are excited to make the new school their new home next week. “It’s a state of the art facility,” said Cameron. The school created and renovated four new junior kindergarten and senior kindergarten classrooms. They also renovated speciality rooms, including a tech-savvy learning common room and a coding and robotics room. There is also a very large, fully equipped

gymnasium, a music room, a large outdoor play area with fencing and play structures and an auditorium. Each classroom also has smart boards and white boards. The building is also fully accessible for differently abled students with specific mobility needs. “We’re really excited to welcome our existing St. Columban’s and Sacred Heart families, as well as our new families to our state of the art facility,” said Cameron. A woman went to the doctor’s office where she was seen by one of the younger doctors. After about four minutes in the examination room, she burst out screaming as she ran down the hall. An older doctor stopped her and asked what the problem was, and she told him her story. After listening, he had her sit down and relax in another room. The older doctor marched down the hallway back to where the young doctor was writing on his clipboard. “What the hell is the matter with you?” the older doctor demanded. “Mrs. Terry is 71 years old, has four grown children and seven grandchildren, and you told her she was pregnant?” The younger doctor continued writing and without looking up said. “Does she still have the hiccups?”
