CORNWALL, Ontario - Food Fest in support of Beyond 21 celebrated its fourth year in Cornwall this Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018.

This year saw 10 food vendors on hand and many other artisan booths fill Pitt St. from First St. to Third St. All together, nearly 100 volunteers came together to help make the event happen.

Bereaved Families Gala Sept. 15 NICK SEEBRUCH nicholas.seebruch@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Bereaved Families of Ontario – Cornwall provide important support and understanding during the most difficult time in people’s lives. They receive no outside funding and rely on donations from the community and fundraisers like their annual Gala Dinner.

The gala will be taking place at the Best Western on Saturday, Sept. 15. Entertainment will be provided by stand-up comedian Derek Seguin with dinner music from Moe Lemieux and Peter Kirkpatrick.

Guests will have a chance to bid on some excellent prizes available through a silent auction. Some of the prizes include jewellery from

Pommier Jewellers, tickets to the Upper Canada Play House and a free night at the Akwesasne Mohawk Casino along with a $50 gift certificate.

Bereaved Families of Ontario – Cornwall are hoping for around 200 people to attend this year’s event.

Tickets are $90 per person and are available at the Bereaved Families office at 216 Montreal Rd. Ticket reservations can also be made via email at info@bfocornwall.ca Money raised by the gala will go to support programs offered by Bereaved Families including closed and open group sessions, one-onone sessions and sessions for children who are experiencing grief and loss.

On Aug. 22, Bereaved Families will be holding an open house at their office. Those who attend the open house will also have the opportunity to purchase tickets for the gala.

“I like family medicine because you get to see a variety of cases, and you get to see the same people over your entire career,” said Patterson. “It’s nice to DR. PATTERSON get to know your patients that way.”

Patterson believes that he is the third person to get a medical scholarship from the City of Cornwall, as part of a return of service agreement. The scholarship program awards $25,000

annually, for up to six years to a qualified medical student. Once certified by the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Ontario, the physician must begin a family practice in Cornwall for at least five years.

“The Medical Scholarship program offers an opportunity for a local student to pursue a career in medicine, and at the same time, satisfy future demand in the community for new doctors,” said Bob Peters, Division Manager of Economic Development for the City. “More info can be found on the City website…the medical scholarship program, in addition to the medical recruitment program, recognizes the importance of attracting medical professionals to the

Local Doctor returns home to practice medicine

CORNWALL, Ontario – Dr. Brent Patterson has returned to the area and is planning to set up his practice in Cornwall in a few years, after the completion of his residency at the Winchester District Memorial Hospital (WDMH).

“It’s already been very rewarding coming back to the area,” said Patterson. “Everyone is so friendly and it’s a nice place to live.”

Patterson, now 25, grew up in Williamstown.

Following his four years of undergraduate schooling at McGill University, where he studied anatomy and cell biology, he attended the

community.”

The scholarship has been very helpful for Patterson. “I think it’s absolutely something people should be thinking about,” said Patterson in regards to the City program. “Having the support from the City makes it a much more achievable goal and reduces the stress of finances.”

Patterson recognizes that the Cornwall area needs more family doctors and understands that a lot of doctors are looking for work.

CORNWALL and the UNITED COUNTIES of SD&G, Ontario - Cornwall and the United Counties of SD&G participated in Doors Open Ontario 2018 on Saturday, Aug. 18, 2018.

From April to October, Doors Open events take place across the Province of Ontario and give residents and tourists alike the opportunity to see the province’s heritage treasures.

Across Cornwall there were 11 locations participating in Doors Open and 12 in SD&G. “Doors Open is more than people going around and seeing old buildings,” said SD&G Tourism Coordinator Nick Seguin. “It is a cultural exchange and people get the chance to see the hard work our community members are doing.”

A few of the locations that participated in Doors Open in Cornwall included the old

Cornwall General Hospital, Trinity Anglican Church and the Port Theatre, while in SD&G participants can go and see the inside of the Martintown Grist Mill, Springfield Farm and the Glengarry Pioneer Museum.

At the Port Theatre, owner Larry Sylvain said that he had about 80 people come in to visit just in the morning. He held screenings of the documentary about the history of the Port Theatre, and each guest got a free sample bag of popcorn.

“Cornwall is one of Ontario’s oldest communities and we have a great history to share and celebrate,” said Kevin Lajoie, Tourism Coordinator with Cornwall Tourism. “Doors Open gives residents and visitors a chance to discover some of our landmark buildings and the interesting stories behind them.”

CORNWALL, Ontario – Positive messages written in chalk like ‘Imagine who they can become because of you’ were drawn along the pavement at Sexual Assault Support Services (SASS) for Women of SDG&A on Thursday, Aug. 16.

SASS held its fifth annual community barbeque until 2 p.m. and invited community members to visit their facility, which they pride for being cozy and comfortable with a homelike environment.

“It’s just our way of giving back to the community,” said Angela Vinet, Executive Director of SASS. “We partner with the police, and it’s just our way of saying thank you to the community for supporting us. It’s also a way of showing support to our clients.”

The event was not a fundraiser, but donations were welcome.

“It’s also a way we can raise awareness, so a part of what we do today is also an open house.

You never know who can come through and maybe need access to service, or know someone who needs services, and they can say ‘yeah

I’ve been to SASS, I know what it’s all about,’” said Vinet.

Members of different community organizations dropped by to show their support.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Kathleen Baker celebrated her 105th birthday on Tuesday, Aug. 14 with family members and friends from her retirement residence, Chartwell Chateau Cornwall.

“I’m feeling a bit overwhelmed,” said Baker.

Baker said she usually feels 105, but there are good days and bad days. She doesn’t know where the last 105 years went.

“Yes, I’ve been here a long, long time,” said Baker in a speech to her peers. “I’ve had some wonderful years. Made some good, good friends.

Au Vieux Duluth hosts Habitat for Humanity fundraiser SHAWNA O’NEILL

CORNWALL, Ontario – Guests who donate to Habitat for Humanity on Wednesday, Aug. 15 at Au Vieux Duluth will have the chance to enjoy an entrée for free from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.

“Alex (Paradis) has generously donated his restaurant, and his delicious food, and his servers’ time to help support Habitat,” said Leigh Taggart, Executive Director of Habitat for Humanity Cornwall & The Counties. “So anyone who makes a minimum $20 donation to Habitat gets to enjoy a wonderful free meal from Alex.”

in Williamsburg and future home builds.

The event will also feature a silent auction, live entertainment from Bordertown Catz and a casino night with blackjack, a roulette battle and more. One lucky guest will also have the chance to win a trip voucher with Jolly Tours.

“So far we’ve raised $170,000 for local causes,” said Alex Paradis, Owner of Au Vieux Duluth, considering the past eight years of fundraising efforts.

Paradis hopes to make the Habitat for Humanity fundraiser an annual event. He hopes to see about 600 people show up to the night of fun and fundraising.

There are three basic ways for acid to attack on your enamel. The first is through environmental exposure, seen with workers in battery factories or professional swimmers. The second is from your diet, with acidic foods and beverages. The third way is from your stomach, as in GERD or some eating disorders.

Generally, saliva helps to restore the natural balance of acid in the mouth. When acidic food or drink is consumed, the enamel will soften for a short time. Exposing the teeth to excess forces, clenching, grinding, even vigorous tooth brushing will cause the breakdown of tooth enamel. This will compromise intact teeth and weaken existing restorations. Teeth may become overly sensitive and unsightly.

Gastro-esophageal reflux disease (GERD) or acid reflux (heartburn) is a disease in which gastric acid is returned from the stomach through the esophagus into the oral cavity. GERD without the symptoms of acid burn or heartburn could still erode tooth enamel.

Eating disorders such as anorexia nervosa and bulimia can have a devastating effect on tooth enamel. Long-term exposure to the acid from vomiting erodes the surfaces of the teeth. People with eating disorders tend to brush aggressively, which can further aggravate enamel erosion, resulting in sensitivity to hot and cold. Improper and vigorous brushing can also erode enamel.

Dental hygienists can discuss individual causes and symptoms of enamel erosion and provide a customized treatment plan to help you minimize your risks to erosion and the loss of tooth structure.

Not a positive move to erase our past history

In my humble opinion we are erasing history. This is not a positive thing.

Every single country in the world has had past history that no one is proud of. Canada is no exception.

I am, of course, referring to the removal of the statute of Canada’s first Prime Minister Sir John Alexander Macdonald from outside the city hall in Victoria, British Columbia.

How many leaders can you name who have been perfect? Macdonald is widely regarded as Canada’s greatest leader, whose image even graces our $10 bank note and many schools and building are named after him.

Our first prime minister was responsible for the transcontinental railway. But, the former prime minister is also regarded as the oppressor of indigenous people.

Macdonald is reported to have once remarked: “Indian children should be withdrawn as much as is possible from parental influence, lest they acquire their habits…and should be placed where they will acquire the habits and modes of thought of white man.”

The decision by Victoria city council has been discussed and deliberated for almost a year. Not everyone on city council approved the measure.

Just like Macdonald was not solely responsible for being branded as a leader of violence against indigenous peoples. This is 2018 and what was acceptable in the past is not politically correct.

In comic books I read as a child, the Indians or the Indigenous people were always portrayed as savages.

But, times have changed. I fully agree with this. Today we talk about gender equality and supporting everyone’s rights. This is called

The home owner admitted that in hindsight chasing the two suspects might not have been the smartest thing to do.

Upon hearing the wild tale, a retired OPP staff sergeant, who knows the man, joked, “The guy is my new hero.”

Somebody else suggested that perhaps the home owner might be eligible for an honourary membership in the National Rifle Association (NRA) which is big on arming citizens to protect themselves and their property.

As for that rifle, police told him it was a good thing he left it back at the house, otherwise they would have been obliged to charge him with a firearms offence.

That was what club president, G. B.”Bunny” Markell, told city council on Aug. 20, 1970.

The biggest bone of contention was the 75-25 gate split. The club wanted its share increased to 80%, along with a better deal on three free hours of practice time each week at the Water Street Arena.

The team president said most major junior clubs had at least an 80-20 split and some paid a

fixed rental rate. One, Verdun, paid just $200 a game. He also pointed out that Cornwall played in one of the smallest (capacity) rinks in the league with just 1,400 seats. In Quebec City, the Remparts had a 10,500-seat arena with average attendance of around 8,000.

Markell said the team, which he said lost $15,000 in the 1969-70 season, could make it through the upcoming season without a better cut of the gate, but doubted if the team would be around for the following season.

While the club lost money, he said the city made $8,200 on gate receipts, which was used to help upgrade one of the oldest junior hockey rinks in Ontario.

The team also wanted a reduction in the number of complimentary tickets it was obligated to fork over to the city. Markell said the freebies cost the club $2,500 a season.

Some members of council said that if the Royals got a better financial deal other organizations that rented the Water Street Arena and Bob Turner Memorial Centre would expect the same.

In the end the team got a better deal and would go on to become one of the few junior hockey franchises to win three Memorial Cups.

A couple of young would-be thieves took on more than they could handle when they came up against a 78-year-old determined South Glengarry resident who just weeks earlier had undergone major surgery.

Not only did the man chase them off his property around 10 p.m. earlier this month, but he kept chasing them for a couple of miles in his pick-up truck. Right on their tail.

It all started when the man’s wife noticed a light shining near a vacant building on their property not far from the main residence. She alerted her husband who immediately swung into action.

He grabbed a rifle and headed out of the house. The rifle had a trigger lock so its only use would been as a bat. Of course, the two would-be thieves didn’t know that the rifle was locked.

When the two suspects saw what was happening they made a run for their vehicle and headed down the driveway to the main road with the resident, in his pick-up truck in hot pursuit.

In a Hollywood-style chase, in which he stayed close enough to the fleeing vehicle to read the Quebec licence plate, the resident eventually cornered them in a Lancaster restaurant parking lot.

He blocked them in. Oddly enough, they didn’t try to make a run for it on foot. Perhaps, thinking the man was armed, they thought it safer to remain in the vehicle and wait for the police to “save” them.

Fortunately, a witness to all the action called 9-1-1 (the resident didn’t have his cell phone with him) and within a few minutes three Ontario Provincial Police cruisers were on scene to make

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Cornwall River Rats came in second in the A Division at a recent baseball tournament that took place in Legion Ball Park in Cornwall.

The River Rats made it to the final game against Orleans, but after a close game, they came up short 11-10.

Overall, the River Rats had a record of 3-2 in the tournament.

The tournament saw teams from Kingston,

northern New York, Brockville and Ottawa come to Cornwall to compete.

River Rats Coach Pat Collins said he was proud of his team’s performance this year.

“Our team had a very strong season with good showings in tournaments in Malone and Kanata this year,” he said. “Our boys rallied around the motto of ‘Defend Home’ for our Cornwall Tournament this year and although we came up just a bit short of that goal our boys played their hearts out and represented Cornwall and the River Rats brand extremely well.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Despite his young age, 12-year-old Isaac Charbonneau is already finding success in the soccer world.

Charbonneau has been honing his skills for several years in Cornwall’s U12 soccer community and has now been selected to captain Team Canada in the Danone Nations Cup. The Danone Nations Cup is an international soccer tournament for youth aged 10 to 12.

This year, the cup is taking place in Barcelona, Spain in Sept. 2019.

The tenth annual Team Cornwall Golf Funday is coming up on Tuesday, Sept. 11 at Summerheights Golf Links.

Every year, upwards 150 golfers get out on the green and enjoy a day of networking, entertainment and of course golf.

Participants will be treated to a 9 a.m. continental breakfast, followed by a 10 a.m. shotgun start. Lunch will be provided and there will be a buffet dinner at 4 p.m. The price of all of this is included in the $135 registration fee.

Ninth annual Quest Strongman/ Strongwoman results CORNWALL, Ontario - Local weightlifters got the chance to test their mettle at the annual Quest Strongman/ Strongwoman competition held at Quest on Saturday, Aug. 18.

Winner of the female competition was Karine Parthenais who took home $200 donated by Dr. Navaneelan Family & Cosmetic Dentistry.

Lance Kelly won in the Male Light Weight Division under 185lbs and also won $200 from Dr. Navaneelan Family and Cosmetic Dentistry.

Kevin Mcleod won $50 in the Quest Middle Weight under 220lbs division.

Other winners included Patrick Dumais,

who won $200 from Dr. Navaneelan Family & Cosmetic Dentistry, Ethan Harmaty won $50 from Quest for his performance in the Heavy Weight over 220.1lbs Division. Mike MacIntyre won $200 from Dr. Navaneelan Family & Cosmetic Dentistry and Chad Parthenais won $50 from Quest.

Events included tire flip, deadlift, log press and a medley which involved carrying three implements over 150 feet ranging in weight from 150-250lbs.

The event’s MVP was Chris Tkac with the runner-up being Maxime Beauchamps of Montreal. Beauchamps won $150 from Love Love Food and Tony Lacroix.

“All athletes cheered each other on and the event was great success, so happy to see

everyone work as a team, huge numbers that shocked my expectations,” said Thomas Irvine of Quest. “Volunteers Waytte Brochert, lacrosse legend Jacob Ruest, Greg and Tracy Critch and Pete Bouvier made this event smooth and successful.”

CORNWALL, Ontario - Nearly 600 cyclist biked from Ottawa to Cornwall this past Saturday, and many made the return trip on Sunday, Aug. 19 all to help fight multiple sclerosis.

The MS Bike event was in its 29th year this year, and Stephanie Desjardins, Specialist Fund Developer with MS Canada said that they expected to raise $525,000 this year.

Bikers left the Larry Robinson Arena in

Metcalfe at 7:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 18 and started arriving in Cornwall at the Nav Centre early in the afternoon.

The next day, many bikers participated in the return trup back to COULOMBE Ottawa. The round trip totaled at 225km.

One rider who made it into Cornwall just before 2 p.m. on Saturday said that she had

been participating in the MS Bike tour for 20 consecutive years.

“A long time ago I was looking for a long ride,” said Angie Coloumbe of Ottawa. “But after the first year I fell in love with the cause.

It really tugs at the heart strings.”

Money raised by the MS Bike tour goes to the MS Society of Canada and will help fund programs in Eastern Ontario and national research initiatives.

Niveau 1 de bas niveau d’eau COMMUNIQUÉ DE PRESSE DE LA CNS NATION SUD, Ontario - Malgré d’importantes tempêtes isolées au cours des dernières semaines, la Conservation de la Nation Sud (CNS) avise les résidents que le bassin versant continuera à rester au niveau 1 des conditions de bas niveau d’eau dans le cadre du Programme ontarien d’intervention en cas de bas niveau d’eau.

Les orages localisés qui se sont produits ont temporairement amélioré les conditions, mais

les jauges de débit sur le territoire de la CNS ont montré des augmentations mineures des débits avant de redescendre en dessous de la normale.

Les prévisions à long terme indiquent que les mois d’août et de septembre seront plus chauds et plus secs que la normale. Pour atténuer les conditions de bas niveau d’eau, il faudrait recevoir des précipitations régulières au cours des prochaines semaines et des prochains mois.

Durant la période de niveau 1, la CNS demande aux résidents, aux entreprises et aux autres industries du bassin versant de réduire leur consommation d’eau de 10% afin d’atténuer

les impacts des bas niveaux d’eau. La consommation d’eau peut être réduite en limitant les utilisations non essentielles (par ex. arrosage des pelouses, lavage de la voiture, etc.).

Sur les trois niveaux de bas niveau d’eau, le niveau 1 indique qu’il existe un problème d’approvisionnement en eau en cas de persistance des tendances actuelles en matière de précipitations et de débit. Une condition de niveau 2 indique que des problèmes d’approvisionnement mineurs peuvent apparaître et que des restrictions de conservation et des restrictions non essentielles sont

habituellement dans les trois à 30 jours suivant une morsure de tique : • fièvre, mal de tête ou fatigue • douleurs musculaires et articulaires • spasmes, engourdissement ou picotement • paralysie faciale • enflure des glandes • éruption cutanée (cependant, bien des gens n’ont pas ou ne voient pas d’éruption) Le risque de transmission de la maladie de Lyme d’une tique à un humain est très faible si celle-ci reste agrippée pendant moins de 24 heures. Ce risque augmente toutefois, si la tique infectée est attachée pendant plus de 24 heures. « Il est important de contacter votre fournisseur de soins de santé si vous croyez qu’une tique était agrippée à vous pendant plus de 24 heures ou si vous développez des symptômes semblables à la grippe ou une éruption cutanée qui s’agrandit dans les semaines qui suivent une

morsure de tique », déclare Dr Paul Roumeliotis, Médecin hygiéniste du BSEO. « Si l’infection qui cause la maladie de Lyme n’est pas dépistée et traitée, elle peut durer pendant des mois ou des années et causer de graves problèmes de santé pouvant affecter le cœur, le système nerveux ou les joints. » La plupart des cas de la maladie de Lyme sont facilement traités avec des antibiotiques.

Les tiques sont plus actives pendant les mois du printemps et de l’été, mais elles se trouvent à tout moment de l’année quand les températures sont au-dessus du point de congélation, habituellement dans les boisés, les herbes hautes et les buissons. La CNS continuera à surveiller les conditions du bassin versant et émettra des mises à jour au besoin. Afin de mieux comprendre les conditions locales, les propriétaires fonciers, les entreprises et les industries sont encouragés à contacter la CNS s’ils rencontrent des problèmes inhabituels liés à l’eau.

ONTARIO - Le Bureau de santé de l’est de l’Ontario (BSEO) rappelle aux résidents que les populations de tiques à pattes noires, qui peuvent transmettre la maladie de Lyme aux humains, augmentent dans les endroits entourant Cornwall et les cinq comtés de l’Est. Il est à noter toutefois, que la région abrite aussi d’autres types de tiques.

Sur le territoire du BSEO, au moins 20 % des tiques à pattes noires sont porteuses de la bactérie qui cause la maladie de Lyme. C’est pourquoi la maladie est maintenant considérée endémique (ou solidement établie) dans notre région.

La maladie de Lyme est une maladie grave qui peut causer les symptômes suivants

dans trois camps différents cet été, aux aires de conservation de High Falls à Casselman, de Cass Bridge à Winchester, et de Jessup’s Falls à Plantagenet.

Pour des frais d’inscription minimes, la CNS a donné aux jeunes les compétences et les outils nécessaires pour profiter de deux journées amusantes de pêche avec remise à l’eau dans chaque camp et aucune expérience préalable n’était nécessaire pour y participer. Les enfants ont reçu gratuitement une canne, des articles de pêche et ont été nourris au déjeuner. De plus, la Société des pêcheurs à la mouche d’Ottawa (Ottawa Flyfishers Society) était sur place pour apprendre aux enfants les bases de la pêche à la mouche, et le ministère des Richesses naturelles et des Forêts a aussi participé en donnant des conseils sur les règles et règlements de pêche.

John Mesman, chef d’équipe des communications pour la CNS, explique : « Ces camps offrent une expérience d’apprentissage en plein air inestimable aux jeunes de la région. Ils aident à sensibiliser les jeunes à l’environnement naturel grâce à une pêche responsable. »

Suivant une autre année fructueuse, la CNS espère pouvoir augmenter la quantité de ses camps de pêche l’été prochain pour répondre à la demande. « Ces camps ont beaucoup de valeur » ajoute M.
