CORNWALL, Ontario – For the first time ever, USA BMX/BMX Canada hosted a Provincial Qualifier competition in Cornwall that attracted 137 riders on Saturday, Aug. 11.

Riders hailed from all across ON and QC, and some local riders found themselves on the podium. Participants ranged from twoyears-old to over 50.

Dan Drouin, the Track Operator and one of the Managers of BMX Cornwall, was happy to see new, local riders attending the

event and thought the day was fantastic.

“Everyone is really happy with how the track turned out, lots of compliments. It’s nice,” said Drouin, who worked for several years to bring a BMX track to Cornwall.

The event had a 50/50 draw and a raffle, giving away prizes like a barbeque, hammock and $500 gift certificate to Total Cyclery & Sports.

According to Drouin, riders need to compete in four provincial events to participate in the provincial championship, which will be held in Stouffville, ON this year.

Riders can compete after purchasing a BMX membership, which is $65 for a year,

“We have sanctioned races every Monday night and practices every Wednesday,” said Drouin. “It’s free for all new participants to try the first time.

On Sunday, Aug. 12, a double point race will be held to raise money for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society of Canada.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Racers climbed into their dragon boats and sailed off around 9:30 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 11 to participate in the ninth annual Cornwall Waterfest.

With 21 teams participating in this year’s dragon boat races, in comparison to eight teams in 2017, volunteers believed this year could be the best yet.

“We are very happy we have had such a good turn out from the community and such an enthusiastic response,” said Lea Emard, a volunteer and racer. “We feel that it’s a perfect day for a race and people are in such high spirits.”

Additional to the new crowd of participants, Waterfest introduced new food vendors to the usual array of options this year. Waterfest shirts were also being sold for the first time, with the new event logo. Live entertainment, artisan vendors, tai chi training and more activities offered something for everyone to enjoy.

This year, awards will be given to winning teams within each division, including Sport, Community, Women and Youth divisions. Both

the Women and Youth division are new additions this year. Prizes will also be given to teams with the overall and local with the fastest time of the day.

“We have had a really good group of volunteers that have worked very hard to help reach out into the community and let people know about the event,” said Emard. “We have really attracted new people that have never participated before.”

Emard said she was happy to see participants racing for the first time to try the sport and support a good cause.

“Cornwall Hospice is our partner charity, so we are helping to raise some money for the benefit of Hospice,” said Emard. “Hospice is going to get some of the proceeds from the 50/50 draw, as well as people collected pledges and that money goes directly to Hospice. They also have a silent auction table set up and that money goes back to Hospice too.”

For every $50 raised towards Cornwall Hospice, participants will have one ballot submitted into a draw in which they can win a trip to Toronto, with one-night hotel stay, to see the

Emard said that Cornwall Waterfest organizers are very thankful for this year’s sponsors, as they provided essential services for the event, like getting the boats into the water, assisting with setup and ensuring the safety of the water.

“The organizing committee does a great job.

And seeing all the people participate, plus the crowds cheering on their teams along the waterfront, is positive for Cornwall,” he added.

Doors are open this weekend CORNWALL and UNITED COUNTIES of SD&G, Ontario - Both the City of Cornwall and the United Counties of SD&G are holding Doors Open events this weekend.

From April to October, Doors Open events take place across the Province of Ontario and give residents and tourists alike the opportunity to see the province’s heritage treasures.

There are 11 sites in Cornwall and 12 in SD&G.

“Cornwall is one of Ontario’s oldest communities and we have a great history to share and celebrate,” said Kevin Lajoie, Tourism Coordinator with Cornwall Tourism. “Doors Open gives residents and visitors a chance to discover some of our landmark buildings and the interesting stories behind them.”

A few of the locations participating in Doors Open in Cornwall include the old Cornwall General Hospital, Trinity Anglican Church and the Port Theatre, while in SD&G participants can go and see the inside of the Martintown Grist Mill,

Springfield Farm and the Glengarry Pioneer Museum.

Those looking to go to Springfield Farms and are approaching from the eastbound direction on Cty. Rd. 25 will have a slight fiveminute detour that they will have to take, but visitors should not let that throw them. Springfield Farms is a beautiful property in the Apple Hill area that includes a yurt that serves as an AirBnB. “Doors Open is more than people going around and seeing old buildings,” said SD&G Tourism Coordinator Nick Seguin. “It is a cultural exchange and people get the chance to see the hard work our community members are doing.”

A giant fork representing TELUS Cornwall Food Fest has been making its way closer to the city, stopping to bring awareness of the event to different communities.

Beyond 21 relies on donations to sustain services. Food Fest is their biggest annual event.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The first ever Ride for Hospice that was hosted by Seaway Valley Riders attracted 86 motorcyclists and several passengers on Saturday, Aug. 11.

together as a club…We decided to do something. With the numbers we have, we could do something good,” said Mike Dagenais, a member of the Seaway Valley Riders.

Dagenais expects to raise over $8,000 and anticipates funds to continue trickling in over the next few weeks. He said that funds will be allocated by Hospice where they are needed.

“Hospice touches virtually every human being (in Cornwall),” said Kat Alderson, a member of the Seaway Valley Riders. “Because it’s not a government funded organization, it’s run mostly with volunteers. They need this money to continue to offer one of the best things for end of life that they can. They allow partners and families to spend time with their loved ones and not have to look after them.”

“We’ve been overwhelmed with the response we have been getting from the biking community, friends, restaurants, sponsors — they gave us so much of everything so we can make the most money at the end of the day,” said Dagenais.

Kim Hurtubise, the owner of St. Lawrence Blvd Pub, was happy and excited to host the riders before and after their ride.

Humanitarian work of Cornwall area Couple featured in a children’s book!

MAXVILLE, Ontario - Humanitarian work of a caring elderly couple is prominently featured in a children’s book for all ages.

The inspiring work of Fred, 87, and Bonnie Cappuccino, 78, who raised 21 children – 19 of them adopted –, was written by Shelley Adam of Turner Valley in Alberta. Comical illustrations are painstaking and beautifully done by Melissa Baker Nguyen.

“This is definitely an inspiring story and a true legacy of kindness that needs to be told and shared,” explains Adam. “It reminds us we can make a difference in our world.”

The Cappuccinos are the founder of the Maxville-based Child Haven International which provides safe homes and education and cares for more than 1,300 destitute and orphaned children in India, Bangladesh, Nepal and Tibet. Proceeds from the sale of books go directly to Child Haven.

And for every fifth book sold, a book will be donated to a local Canadian school library to help spread the word. Adam said Fred and Bonnie – more affectionately known as pa and ma (father and mother) are helping change the world, one child at a time. She adds the Cappuccinos love children and is determined to help destitute.

The couple’s adopted children came from different parts of the world and included disabled children from various cultures and ethnic backgrounds.

The philosophy of the Cappuccinos is to accept everyone, so they can get accommodation, food, clean water and clothes and go to school. The couple strictly follows India’s revered Mahatma Gandhi and abides by rules not to harm any living things, live simple lives and treat everyone equally. Bonnie travels to each of the nine homes four times a year. Children and families in homes celebrate by singing and dancing when Bonnie visits them.

Some of the children have grown up to become nurses, engineers, carpenters, teachers and computer programmers. And some even work in organization’s homes to care for children. When Adam was growing up, she always wanted to help others by travelling to faraway lands. Her first trip was to Bangladesh but later she visited India and Nepal.

“The children made my heart so happy.”

Adam and her husband Marc, who flies airplanes, have three children of their own and three grandchildren.

Child Haven was started in 1985. Today, the organization’s annual budget is $1.5 million, and it does not receive any government grants. All the children are treated equally, regardless of gender, caste or color. Also, all religions and customs are respected. I have personally known the Cappuccinos and writing about this amazing couple for years. their meals. What struck us the most was when Fred came back with some fresh eggs? Initially we refused to accept because the family needed it more than we did. Our refusal was not accepted.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The second annual Big Ride for Littles will be happening on Sept. 8 this year. Last year, event organizers Cory and Vicki Reggentin raised $4,900, cycling from Kingston to Cornwall.

“This year I have a couple of other fellow cyclists who are excited to do the ride with me,” said Cory Reggentin.

Reggentin was originally inspired by a friend who fundraised for a charitable organization through cycling. Reggentin thought, what is better than blending his passion and giving back to the community through it?

Reggentin and his wife have been volunteers with Big Brothers Big Sisters of Cornwall and District for the past five years. With funds raised last year, they were able to give $50 and $100 gift cards, a Thanksgiving dinner and Christmas presents to local families.

This year, Reggentin is hoping to raise money for back to school supplies as he understands they can be expensive.

The fundraising goal is $8,415, one dollar for every km he biked last year.

WILLIAMSTOWN, Ontario – Attendees of all ages spent the weekend of Aug. 10 to Aug. 12 at the 207th annual Williamstown Fair.

It is expected that the fair saw between 15,000 and 18,000 people.

The three-day event incorporated a wide variety of attractions, such as constant entertainment and competitions, artisan vendors and program information booths, craft and building stations, animals shows, petting areas, vehicle shows and inflatable rides.

“Everybody seems to be having a lot of fun,” said Ron Eamer, a fair board member. “The food, the music and the competitions are great. We’ve been blessed this weekend.”

According to Eamer, organizers received multiple compliments, especially from attendees who live out of town, on the respectable cleanliness of the venue and its numerous attractions.

“It’s probably the most representative you can get of an old style country fair,” said Eamer. “We take great pride in keeping it that way and the entire board works to keep it that way. You can see the grounds are as nice as you can get anywhere with the mature trees and the lawns.”

La présence du virus du Nil occidental a été détectée dans des populations de moustiques de notre région. Par contre, aucun cas humain n’a été signalé dans notre région. « Le Bureau de santé de l’est de l’Ontario fait de la surveillance active du virus du Nil occidental parmi les moustiques », explique Dr Paul Roumeliotis, Médecin hygiéniste. « Cette découverte récente démontre que le virus du Nil demeure une préoccupation dans notre région. Il est donc important que les résidents soient avertis et qu’ils prennent les précautions nécessaires contre le virus pour leur propre protection et celle de leur famille. » Le virus du Nil occidental est transmis aux humains par la piqûre d’un maringouin infecté.

Pour la majorité des gens, le risque de maladie du virus du Nil occidental est faible. Par contre,

le virus peut causer de graves maladies chez d’autres.

Pour se protéger à l’extérieur, le BSEO recommande de : • Porter des souliers et des bas, des pantalons longs et des chemises à manches longues si vous êtes dehors pendant de longues périodes ou lorsque les moustiques sont très actifs du crépuscule au lever du jour • Porter des vêtements de couleur pâle, tissés serrés • Porter un blouson ou un chapeau moustiquaire • Considérer l’utilisation d’un chasse-moustique selon les directives • Utiliser une moustiquaire ou une structure munie de moustiquaires pour dormir dehors Pour contrôler la population de moustiques, on vous encourage à : • Nettoyer et vider les contenants d’eau stagnante à l’extérieur – vieux pneus, brou-

ettes, barils, etc.

• Changer l’eau des bains d’oiseaux au moins une fois par semaine • Vérifier la piscine et s’assurer que la pompe fait circuler l’eau • Renverser les pataugeuses lorsqu’elles ne sont pas utilisées • Vérifier et nettoyer les gouttières et les drains pour éliminer toute obstruction • S’assurer que les fossés de drainage sont dégagés • Vérifier la présence d’eau stagnante sur les toits plats • Effectuer l’entretien de la cour et la pelouse régulièrement : recueillir et composter les feuilles ou l’herbe de tonte, etc., qui peuvent servir de source alimentaire aux larves de moustique • Retourner souvent le composte et remplir les zones de dépression dans la pelouse • Tailler les buissons denses où les mous-

I like drinking a cold beer as much as the next guy, but in my opinion Doug Ford’s bucka-beer initiative isn’t that big a deal, if it ever happens at all.

First of all, there is no legislation on the table that mandates that any beer be sold for a dollar. Ford merely lowered the mandatory minimum price that beer must be sold for.

Buck-a-beer is a lot of flash and no substance, but the strategy behind it is working.

Ford can say he completed a campaign promise and for the past week, buck-a-beer is what a lot of media have been talking about.

I’ve seen about a dozen articles about how craft brewers won’t swallow the buck-a-beer price model and other stories criticizing the strategy, but few it seems are eager to talk about real changes that would actually help low to middle income Ontarians.

Buck-a-beer, how about buck a litre of gas?

That would make a real difference in the lives of residents in Ontario. Suddenly it is cheaper to get to work, it is cheaper to ship goods, it is cheaper to travel for vacation. Lowering the price of gas would have a real impact on every major Ontario industry and would encourage economic growth, buck-a-beer, not so much.

Another regulatory change that the Ford government can make that would really change lives and improve Ontario’s economy would be a cap on the cost of internet. By making fast internet cheaper, especially in rural areas, the Ontario government would be creating fertile ground for a growing economy.

Internet access improves education and access to cheap internet might also encourage private investment in the province. Toronto was the only North American city being considered for Amazon’s new headquarters, and maybe if the internet and cell service were a little cheaper in this province, that might have helped Canada’s biggest city with their bid.

Editor, Our government’s initiative to keep our promise and scrap the Cap-and-Trade scheme, save an average family $260 per year and create an estimated 14,000 jobs stirred many residents into voicing opinions on both sides.

We must remain mindful of the principles at stake. Former Premier Kathleen Wynne saddled hard-working Ontarians

with an additional tax they could not afford.

Cap-and-Trade alone made gasoline 4.9 cents a litre more expensive than it should be, and drove up the cost to manufacture and transport goods in the Province. It hit poorest Ontarians hardest. Adding insult to injury, Capand-Trade redistributed funds from cashstrapped Ontario families to a small number of often well-off beneficiaries. It also gave the

previous government the cover it needed to cut base funding across a wide range of services, including education. That wasn’t right. No amount of environmental concern can erase that scheme’s job-killing, regressive nature and the unbecoming use to which it was put. As a government, we can set ourselves clearer and more measurable objectives to improve our environment, such as cleaner air, cleaner water,

better conservation and reduced waste. We will deliver on these commitments without resorting to increasing taxes on Ontarians, as we deliver on our promise to clean up Ontario’s finances and work for the people who, after 15 years of mismanagement, can finally see relief.

Cornwall Community Police Services is about to take a giant leap when the board names the member of the force who will move up to succeed Danny Aikman as deputy chief.

The deputy chief annoucement could come in the next few weeks and it will be a milestone in the force’s history.

Insp. Shawna Spowart, officer in charge of field operations, already the highest ranking female officer in CCPS history, will be named deputy. She was one of two candidates interviewed for the position.

A decision was made some time ago that the force would name the next chief and deputy chief from within the force rather than looking outiside. The last four chiefs - including an acting chief - have come from outside the force.

Aikman, with 32 years on the city force, will become chief when Dan Parkinson retires before the end of the year. Aikman has been given the ambiguous title “transitional chief”, a strange designation for a guy who has served along side two CCPS chiefs over the last 15 years. One would think that with such a wealth of experience as the No. 2 officer he wouldn’t need several months to learn the ropes.

THIS AND THAT Voter turnout doesn’t seem to be a problem in one Georgia county precinct. In recent state primary voting all 276 registered voters turned out. And some more than once. In all, 670 ballots were cast at voting machines. That’s a 243% voter turnout. Shades of that old line, “Vote early, and vote often.” ... A city business owner in the food service business says it is getting harder to find reliable help, and it isn’t always about starting out at minimum wage. He would hire 30 more full-time

employees, if he could find them. He has heard it all: “I don’t like working (every second) weekends.” “Do I have to start at 8 (morning)? I can’t get up that early.” “Do I have to work an eighthour shift?” “How long do I have to work to get three weeks vacation?”... Don’t know about you, but I’m losing faith in pollsters, economists and weather forecasters.

HERE AND THERE Too bad Walter Cronkite - who earned the “Most trusted newsman in America” title - isn’t around to give his take on Trumpmania. ... Back in the 1970s a friend returned from a trip to California with a “wild tale” about water being sold in bottles. My question was, “Who would pay for a bottle of water when you get get it out of a tap for nothing?” ... If the goal is to kill Americans, terrorists just have to sit back and watch, at least when it comes to Chicago, the country’s third largest city. So far this year, the Windy City has had 318 murders, an improvement on other years.

During a two-day stretch earlier this month, 72 people were shot, 12 of them killed. In a sevenday period in May, 84 people were shot, nine of them killed. Not one involved a “terrorist” attack.

In Canada, there were 611 murders in 2017, that is 1,319 fewer than California had for the same year. ... Two police officers gunned down in Fredericton and not a single protest demanding justice for the officers and two other victims.

And two years from now, when the accused goes to trial, it will be all about protecting his rights.

Bonville resident wonders if anyone else noticed the small green sign on Hwy 138 that says Bonville, as opposed to the nice, big colorful one on the secondary road from Martintown with the flashing light. The 138 is huge and noticeable. Maybe someone could switch them and add another from opposite direction. It would certainly be more inviting and visible to Bonvillers. Plus the sign on the secondary road is almost totally hidden by branches. Yikes!

One rainy evening, my husband, John, and I emerged from a restaurant only to find that he had locked the keys in the car. He insisted he could open the door with a wire coat hanger, so we went back to the restaurant to get one.

There were none to be found.

John then ran to a department store a quarter-mile away and returned with a hanger.

After a few attempts, he got the door open and we climbed in. As we sat there, soaked and cold, he stuck the hanger under his seat.

With a smug grin, he said, “Now if this ever happens again, I’ll have one handy.”

The Williamstown Fair is bigger than Christmas for most South Glengarrians. It was a little smaller this year, but I saw many who still enjoyed this much loved event. Here’s to another year for Canada’s oldest country fair.

The third annual Teddy Bear Picnic hosted by Ontario Power Generation (OPG) attracted over 150 visitors on Sunday, Aug. 12. According to paramedics Sherril Lazare and Clint Col of the Akwesasne Mohawk Ambulance (AMA), some teddy bears suffered broken legs, arms and backs. One plush elephant even suffered a broken trunk.

Doors Open is this weekend. There are so many places in this area that this event will give the public access too. I think it will be really worthwhile to checkout Springfield Farm near Apple Hill. They have a yurt that they rent out on AirBnB.

Bereaved Families do great work here in Cornwall for those who are struggling with grief and loss. They receive no outside funding. Their biggest fundraiser of the year, their gala, is coming up on September 15. Stop by their office on Montreal Rd. for more information.

With the fair season coming to a close, some are getting excited for fall. I like the beautiful colours of the changing leaves, but I can never fully enjoy the season because I know of the miserable winter weather that is only weeks behind it. What do you think of the fall?
