CORNWALL, Ontario - The Upper Canada District School Board has purchased 10 acres of land that will be used to build a new 400-student elementary school to replace the ageing East Front and Gladstone public schools.

Trustees approved a motion at their regular meeting in Brockville to purchase land from the City of Cornwall and a private landowner at a total cost of $775,000, said Jeremy Hobbs, chief information and facilities officer with the board.

The land is located at the southeast corner of Marleau Avenue and Nick Kaneb Drive.

Cornwall trustee David McDonald said he was excited the project is moving forward and will establish the four-school elementary system

for the city originally envisioned by the board more than a decade ago.

While there were other priorities for the board in school construction, McDonald said he is gratified to see the project coming together.

“It’s been 10 years and this is definitely a highlight of my political career,” said McDonald. “I am excited to get started. This is a good thing for Cornwall and a good thing for the students at East Front and Gladstone who are looking forward to having a new building in the near future.”

The Ministry of Education has approved funding for construction and PBK Architects of Cornwall will be handling the design of the new school.

The amount of provincial funding secured for the project is not being disclosed to protect the integrity of the tendering process, said

East Front, located on Montreal Road, was originally built in 1934, with additions in 1954 and 1991. Gladstone, located on McConnell Avenue, was built in 1954.

The project is at the design stage. No name has yet been chosen for the school. Following approval of the designs, the project will go to tender to choose a general contractor. The tentative opening date is September 2016.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Aidan Small, 8, was a big winner at the Kinsmen Music Festival as it celebrated six decades of putting talented kids centre stage.

Small won first place in the ‘Excellence in the Early Years at Piano’ with an impressive performance. Small has been playing the instrument for four years.

He dedicated a month of training to impress everyone in attendance. As he hoisted a trophy half his size over his head in victory, the young pianist cheered in glory.

“It feels extra good, but I still think a lot of people played their best,” said Small.

His older sister Abigail, 10, won second place in a music challenge. She played two piano pieces back to back without notes.

“I was pretty nervous until I started performing,” said Abigail.

Playing on a grand piano was a big stretch for them, but the siblings adapted and emerged triumphantly. On the final day T:10”of the four-day event, they performed in the festival’s 2014 Concert of the Stars. A spot

reserved for the event’s top entertainers.

Abigail played the song ‘Turkish Bazaar’ with great results and her brother delivered a first class rendition of the ‘Camel Ride.’

“It felt really good being on stage in a theatre,” said Small.

“I’m proud of him,” added Abigail.

The festival introduced a new component in its 60th year: the art of dance. Two grade 10 students representing St. Lawrence Secondary School took control of the stage with ease in choreographed routines.

Kelsey Bell and Tiffany Reinhold joined the Smalls at the two-hour concert finale as top performers.

“The most nerve-wracking part is waiting to preform,” said Bell.

She has been dancing for five years, but only started practicing her routine to the song ‘Elsa’ by the Valerie Project two weeks ago. Judging by the flawless delivery a bright future is ahead. Bell’s style intertwines contemporary dance with contortionist movements.

“I’m happy they have this festival,” said Bell. “It’s an awesome opportunity to share my dancing.”

Sea Cadets go head to head in Seaway City Adam Brazeau adam.brazeau@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario – Stormont Sea Cadet, Master Seaman Geneviève Akins was more than ready to put four years of training to the test.

The 15-year-old squared off against over 200 cadets in a Seamanship Training Weekend, hosted by the local Royal Canadian Sea Cadet Corps – 110 Stormont on Saturday and Sunday at the Cornwall Armoury.

Five corps from eastern Ontario, based out of Kingston, Trenton, Napanee, Kemptville, and Ottawa rallied to the Seaway City to participate in a series of competitions against local cadets in intermixed groups.

“Being here and training with hundreds of others helps us to be prepared for the navy,” said Akins.

Life on the open water is something the Cornwall teen continues to contemplate as she works her way up the ranks. Since sea cadet programs are aimed at youths 12 to 18, Akins still has a few years to decide if she will join the navy.

and encouraged them to join.

“My sister and I really like it - it helps with respect and discpline,” she said. “You get to meet a lot of people when you crew with them on a ship. I love to sail.”

Akins is already excited for sea cadet camp this summer, which takes place in Kingston for six weeks. It’s her third year going, the first summer lasted two weeks and the second year was for three. The entire trip comes at no cost to her or her family.

“I’m ready to ditch the beginner boat, I’ll be learning new tricks that are a little more fun than just the basic training,” she joked.

The cadet even learned how to play trumpet by joining the marching band, and has continued to develop her newfound musical talent at her high school. Akins’ involvement in cadets has also piqued her interest in naval history.

In order to gain bragging rights, sea cadets took part in several seamanship contests including line heaving drills, assembling hoists and gyns, firing on a target range with air rifles, and tying knots.

Lt (N) Chris Cochrane has been involved with the Stormont Sea Cadets Corps for over 25 years and participated in the training weekend as a teen.

“We’re continuing on with a longstanding tradition,” said Cochrane.

He noted that the Cornwall Armoury has hosted the event for 25 years.

“Not all towns have access to a great facility like this. Cadets travel from all over the region to train here,” he said.

Spoken from experience, Cochrane described the event as a great opportunity for cadets to challenge themselves, both physically and socially.

He encourages local youth to get involved with the free organization, which even supplies uniforms. There are currently 50 Stormont Sea Cadets, many of which are from Cornwall, as well as Ingleside, Bonville, Lancaster, and Martintown.

The Stormont Sea Cadet Corps meets at the Cornwall Armoury on Mondays at 6:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. and Saturdays from 8:30 a.m. to noon.

Phil Poirier’s zest for community knows no bounds Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - When things were going well, nobody enjoyed being mayor more than Phil Poirier. And when things were going badly, no one took it to heart as much as he did.

The former mayor, just 68, now faces the greatest challenge anyone could foresee.

Since August he has been battling a rare form of cancer that attacked the common bile duct that transports the vital fluid throughout the body. Treatments have been unsuccessful and doctors now tell Poirier and his family the condition is incurable – and time is short.

While his body is showing the effects of fighting a terminal disease, in some cases with stark detail, the look in his eye suggests that Poirier’s spirit for community, and his desire to see Cornwall succeed, has never been stronger.

“Out of all the hardships and what they threw at me…God only knows…I loved it, I still do,” Poirier said with an emotion that could only be understood if you’ve sat in the mayor’s chair. “It still pains me to this day what we lost, and where we could be today.”

It could be said that Poirier was ahead of his time, because ideas he championed that were turned down at the time have been resurrected years later.

He was twice elected mayor in Cornwall, once in 1988, and again in 2003.

Both terms were fraught with challenges – during his first run as mayor Poirier initially had support for a first-rate swimming facility to be built in Cornwall, complete with a wave pool.

Before the term was up voters were convinced the plan was bunk by a group that told the electorate Cornwall couldn’t afford such a grand design.

Ultimately Poirier’s vision for the pool was proven correct, as the Aquatic Centre that was

built at the Cornwall Civic Complex includes many amenities the former mayor said should have been included years before – and some that weren’t.

In an interview Poirier recounted a story that not long after the 1992 election a group of powerful local business people approached him about moving forward with the idea and made offers to donate or provide services to the project.

But by then it was too late.

“They came into my office, a delegation, all the heavyweights – lots of money. There was about eight of them. They all apologized to me, to my face,” said Poirier, who in the years since has heard from dozens of people who suggested he got it right when he advocated for the construction of a pool. “If I was to given a dollar for every person that told me that, I would be a rich man.”

A similar theme ran through his second term as mayor, when some around the city council table waged open warfare with Poirier over a variety of issues – handcuffing his ability to provide the effective leadership he so dearly hoped to convey.

Poirier wears some of the blame for that – but it should be noted he was right when it boiled down to protecting city amenities.

Many of those who opposed him at city hall voted against a plan he supported that would have seen the city assume ownership of the waterfront lands – the same property that is now the site of a controversial chemical tank project.

At the time the federal government had voiced serious interest in divesting itself of the property – the same kind of proposal the city is now scrambling to pursue.

If Poirier and his camp had been successful just a few short years ago there’s no way those tanks would be under construction at this time.

“Today we would own it. We would own it!” he thundered, adding he has been in

Despite differing political philosophies between the two, Poirier has provided a massive file on port divestiture, including background information and government contacts, that he began to create years ago when the issue first surfaced in Cornwall.

“He was kind enough to call me recently,” Poirier said of Kilger. “He told me that many people have no idea just how much vital information is contained in that file.”

Poirier’s time in office also included one of the darkest days in Cornwall’s history - the closure of Domtar Papers in 2006.

“I don’t wish that on anybody. Never. I won’t forget that,” Poirier recalls.

At the time Domtar was convening a meeting at Aultsville Theatre to explain to the hundreds of employees what the closure would mean.

Poirier, against the wishes of police, went to the meeting to hear from employees without the benefit of a bodyguard.

He was mercilessly berated by frustrated Domtar workers.

“I gave it a lot of thought, but said ‘I’m the mayor and I’m going to face the music,’” he said. “You wouldn’t believe some of the things that were said to me.”

All of this is not to say that Poirier should be blamed for the hardships the city has endured, but to suggest that he fought valiantly in spite of the circumstances, for what he believed was right.

In fact, the story of Phil Poirier – the mayor - was almost never told.

Back in the 1970s he was a successful sales manager at Olivetti, a huge office supply company with a massive operation in Montreal that was considering opening franchises at locations throughout Canada.

He was setting up roots in Montreal, had started a family, and was generally happy with the course he had charted for himself.

Cornwall was one of the places Olivetti was opening a franchise, and almost begrudgingly Poirier agreed to start what would become Poirier Business Machines in 1977 on Rosemount Avenue.

Turns out it was one of the best decisions he would make because it led to a successful business venture that put food on the table for his family and fostered a political career few in the city can lay claim to.

“Today, in a lot of ways, if you look at the road map that is there…we are a better off city,” said Poirier. “We’re slowly getting onto the right track and that’s based on economic development to a certain degree.”

Economic development that Poirier helped to foster.

There were critics, to be sure, during his time in public life. But it should be noted that even when a political figure falls short on a given issue, especially in the fickle world of municipal politics, they have often given it their all.

It’s clear that despite the effects of a disease that is ravaging his body, Poirier gave it his all back then – and continues to today.

Family overwhelmed by support

CORNWALL, Ontario - A baby battling a rare form of eye cancer continues to make strides toward a full recovery - and her parents couldn’t be happier with the news, or support they’ve received from the community.

Little Emma McCuaig was born with retinoblastoma, a disease that mostly affects children under the age of five. One of her eyes

has already been removed, but her father Tim told Seaway News his daughter is being fitted with a prosthetic this week.

And despite her trials, hasn’t missed a beat.

“She’s just a really happy baby,” he said.

“She’s doing very well.”

Emma has undergone treatment for tumours that continue to attack her left eye, and Tim said doctors have outlined a regimen that will see her make regular trips to Toronto to “zap and new cancer

cells” that present themselves.

In the meantime the support the family has received has been overwhelming, he said.

“We just want to thank everyone for thinking of us and for helping us through this,” he said.

Just last month upwards of 500 people packed the McCuaig Miracle Benefit at Best Western Cornwall to help offset the costs of Emma’s chemotherapy treatment at the Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.

A live auction raised a total of $27,150.

Riverdale pool will be demolished, splash pad to take its place next year Todd Lihou todd.lihou@tc.tc

CORNWALL, Ontario - Another venerable outdoor pool in Cornwall has seen its last swimmer.

City parks manager Christine Lefebvre confirmed to Seaway News the pool in Riverdale Park, in Cornwall’s west end, will be demolished this summer.

Plans are to replace the pool with a splash pad, but that won’t happen until next year at

the earliest.

Lefebvre said the reason lies in the economics of repairing a pool that is more than 50 years old.

“It’s obsolete. We can’t even get parts for it,” she said. “We’ve been trying to keep it going.”

The final straw came when it was determined a return line beneath the pool is leaking badly.

Seaway News has received calls from frustrated residents, who did not want to share their names, complaining about the decision.

But Lefebvre pointed out the city is following a plan it established in 2009 to rid itself of outdated pools and replace them with splash pads.

Two other city pools, St. Therese on Thirteenth Street and Kinsmen off of St. Felix Street, have also been closed in recent years – which was accompanied by complaints from residents in those neighbourhoods.

“The other two neighbourhoods were passionate about their pools too,” said Lefebvre.

To build a new pool in Riverdale would cost at least $800,000 - likely more - while a splash pad rings in at $350,000 and requires little operating expenditures thereafter.

CORNWALL, Ontario – Laughing in the face of adversity really paid off for a group of college students looking to draw awareness to mental illness.

A crowd of 225 people packed City Limits Bar & Grill – Spotlight Lounge for the ‘Spotlight on Mental Health’ - comedy show on March 29 with Canadian comedian Mike MacDonald as headliner.

All jokes aside, some serious cash was raised for the Cornwall office of the Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA).

Seven St. Lawrence College (SLC) second-year social service worker students reserved a spot at the head of their class for organizing the event, which racked up over $4,000 for the CMHA. “It feels amazing to get all this support,” said Amy Crowe, co-organizer of the fundraiser. “Since we’re almost graduating it’s also a great way to create some connections for work experience for afterwards.”

“People should be able to phone in and say ‘I can’t come in to work today, I’m having a bad day.’ And the employer should understand, under the proper circumstances of course,” he said.

MacDonald joked that the notion of a depressed comic isn’t that far from the truth.

“I’ve always said that there are only two kinds of comics: diagnosed and undiagnosed.

And after a while it’s easy to tell which is which.”

MacDonald, Cornwall’s own Mark Vincent, and Ottawa stand-up comics Josh Williams and Mike Beatty provided the entertainment. But for one humorist in particular the message of the event was all too familiar. MacDonald, who has been diagnosed with bipolar disorder, comes across as all funny bone during his interview with Seaway News.

Listening to his act, which has been seen on Late Show With David Letterman and Just for Laughs, only solidifies it. Meanwhile, on stage he discusses how having a sense of humour isn’t always an easy task for him.

MacDonald’s struggles with mental illness, a previous drug addiction, and ongoing health issues, which have lessened since undergoing a liver transplant last year, usually find their way into his act. It’s a big reason why he was glad to perform at a show focused on mental health awareness.

“It’s always a good initiative to try to lessen the stigma about mental illness,” said MacDonald.

The popular comedian stressed that, minus any special treatment, mental illness should be regarded as any other ailment, especially in the workplace; eluding to the

Trillium plans to resume operations on waterfront: city Todd Lihou

CORNWALL, Ontario - It looks like construction will resume any day now at the site of a pair of controversial chemical tanks on Cornwall’s waterfront.

City hall said Monday despite efforts to arrive at a solution Trillium Distribution plans to resume work at the site owned by Transport Canada at Cornwall Harbour.

The work may resume as early as this week, said the city.

“I am disappointed that Trillium has chosen to not recognize the city’s interim control bylaw,” said Mayor Bob Kilger. “I remain optimistic that a solution exists that will see a permanent end to this activity on Cornwall’s waterfront through the divestiture process.”

A source told Seaway News last week that the city and Trillium were in discussion to see the company operate the tanks for one year, before leaving.

City CAO Norm Levac said talks have have the gamut.

“We’ve certainly had many discussions with Transport Canada and Trillium,” he said.

“There’s a number of options that have been explored.

“But how that ends up in the long term, no one really knows.”

For the tanks to be used, if only for one year, they still need to be completed.

In the meantime critics of the project are planning a protest of sorts near the entrance to the construction site.

Mark MacDonald, a former city councillor turned community activist, said a group plans to

set up a structure used for the annual Cornwall cabane a sucre at the entrance to the site.

MacDonald would not say the group plans to block access to the site, but wouldn’t rule it out either.

“We’re looking at all the options until we find out what is going on,” said said. “We’re setting up down there.”

Trillium and Transport Canada have entered into a lease for the construction and use of tanks on the site. The city has been and remains opposed to the ongoing use of the Cornwall Harbour for the transportation and storage of calcium chloride.

The city has not provided any approval for this project and Transport Canada has maintained that it has sole jurisdiction over development on the lands.

The city and Akwesasne are still in

negotiations with Transport Canada to assume ownership of the land, by way of the government’s port divestiture program.

The ultimate goal is for the City of Cornwall and the Mohawk Council of Akwesasne to take ownership of the harbour lands, which would include the site in question.

The city passed an interim control bylaw on Dec. 9 that prevents the use of the land at Cornwall Harbour for any use other than open space and is in effect for a period of one year.

It is intended to give council and city staff an opportunity to study and subsequently consider adopting different zoning strategies for the area.

Trillium has appealed the bylaw to the Ontario Municipal Board (OMB), and it has also filed an application with the Superior Court of Ontario challenging the authority to adopt the Bylaw.

Cornwall police make arrest in Tim Hortons robbery CORNWALL, Ontario - Cornwall police have arrested a 29-year-old woman in connection with a recent robbery at a local Tim Hortons.

Cornwall resident Ashley Hutt was apprehended by members of the Criminal Investigation Division at an Eighth Street East residence on March 27.

Police allege she entered the Tim Hortons store at the corner of Pitt and Ninth streets on Sunday, March 23 at around 5 p.m. while wearing a disguise and brandishing a handgun.

The woman demanded money from the clerk and ran off with an undisclosed amount.

During their investigation, police discovered the handgun believed to be the one used in the robbery. City cops confirmed the handgun was actually a replica firearm.

The woman has been charged with robbery using a firearm, disguise with intent, possession of a weapon for a dangerous purpose, and breach of probation for failing to keep the peace.

She was held for a bail hearing in Cornwall court today.

DRIVE DISQUALIFIED, BREACH AND OVER 80 Phillip Poirier, 43 of Cornwall was arrested on March 28th, 2014 and charged with over 80, drive disqualified and breach of probation for having consumed alcohol and failing to keep the peace. It is alleged that on March 28th, 2014 the man was found to be operating a motor vehicle despite being on conditions not to all the while under the influence of alcohol.

The man was taken into custody during a traffic stop in the area of Twelfth Street and Pitt Street. He was charged accordingly and later released to appear in court on April 17th, 2014.

ASSAULT, ASSAULT WITH A WEAPON A 22-year-old Cornwall woman was arrested on March 31st, 2014 and charged with assault and assault with a weapon. It is alleged that on March 31st, 2014 the woman was involved in a verbal argument with her 22-year-old boyfriend when she struck him in the ear with a phone.

Police were contacted and an investigation ensued. During their investigation it was also learned that the man was slapped by his ex-girlfriend approximately one month prior. The woman was taken into custody, charged accordingly and later released to appear in court at a later date. Her name was not released as it might identify the victim in the matter.

Kinsmen Pizza Party slices up $100,000 mark CORNWALL, Ontario - The pizzas were nearly as fresh as the news that the Kinsmen Club of Cornwall has collected more than $100,000 through a popular event that benefits youth in the area.

The eighth annual Kinsmen Pizza Party collected nearly $14,000 last Friday, and with that has brought in $107,800 over the years.

“Everything we do goes back to helping youth,” said Dan Carbonnell, chair of the event. “Without all of the people here, we wouldn’t be able to do it.”

About 220 people crammed into the Best

Western Parkway Inn to sample pizza from a variety of Cornwall outlets.

The judges ranked the Louis Pizzeria, Pizza and Pasta Express and Bobby’s Place in the top three, while the people’s choice awards went to Louis’, Pizza and Pasta Express and Milanos, in that order.

The Kinsmen Club donated $2,000 each to Eamer’s Corners Public School, Big Brothers and Big Sisters, and the local Boys and Girls Club, while $1,000 went to the Koala Centre in Cornwall and $800 was provided to the Savard family to help with the care of their son Jordan.

CORNWALL, Ontario – As her debut EP, Little Letters, continues to turn heads, Tracy Lalonde is vying for the top spot in CBC’s Searchlight competition for emerging Canadian artists. The Lancaster singer-songwriter-guitarist is fresh off her first CBC Radio performance and invading the airwaves is only the start for Lalonde. Her name has become synonymous with the local music scene. But now she’s looking to share her delicate yet eager folk-pop sounds across Canada in the annual Searchlight contest, which connects artists and fans across the country.

“It exposes the music to a wider audience whom I may not have been able to reach otherwise,” said Lalonde. “It’s also cool to see what other artists are up to, both regionally and nationally.”

City would be wise to make a deal on the tank issue Todd Lihou

Word around the campfire is tanks on Cornwall’s waterfront could only be filled with chemicals for one summer – before being emptied and ultimately removed.

A source confirmed to me the city and Trillium Distribution are in talks that would allow the company to operate the tanks under construction near the Cornwall Harbour for one summer, before agreeing to leave the facility shortly thereafter.

In other words, if we can put up with a few months of operation the tanks could be removed forever.

If I’m the city, I make this deal.

Of course city hall isn’t confirming anything. CAO Norm Levac was noncommittal when I talked to him, and the city sent out a media release on the tank issue a few days ago advising residents that work on the project would resume soon.

Of course this sent ripples throughout the community, with many demanding action.

Chief among the critics is Mark MacDonald, a former city councillor turned community activist who along with a group of others said earlier this week they would be

occupying a small piece of the property with the cabin used for the annual ‘cabane a sucre’ Francophone festival.

MacDonald said the plan is to occupy the area until more answers come forward.

One of my sources at city hall advised caution right now.

Don’t forget, in order for this ‘deal’ to go forward that would see the tanks removed, they have to be finished so Trillium can use them for one summer.

The tanks will contain calcium chloride, which is used to melt ice in the winter, and acts as a dust suppressor on roads and at construction sites during the summer.

Word is Trillium has already signed contracts for the coming year, and needs a place to store its calcium chloride – which is Cornwall.

Which brings me back to the same point – make the deal.

It’s not the best we could hope for, which would be an immediate halt to construction, followed by a big fat apology from the federal government for the royal screw job we got.

But all things remaining equal, if the parties involved can agree the property will be vacated in short order, I don’t see anything better on the horizon.

Let’s not forget Trillium and the Pollard family are not the bad guys (though they are in dire need of an education on how to deal with the media). The company signed a deal in good faith with the federal government and if my last name were Pollard I would probably be just as upset as they are likely to be at this time.

If they can be convinced to move on after just one season of operation on the Cornwall waterfront then critics of the tanks can claim victory and we can move on.

The next issue on the horizon, though, is who will foot the bill for the decommissioning of the site once Trillium leaves?

Tank critics like Chuck Charlebois and MacDonald were both guardedly optimistic

about the deal when I spoke with them recently – but the pair also had some pointed questions about who pays for what once Trillium moves out.

Those questions, at least at this early juncture, are not easy to answer.

The city will argue long and hard it is the federal government, which still owns the property, who should get out the cheque book. Ottawa, I would wager, will be quick to say otherwise.

Tank critics have said all along that there will be a cost to the removal of the tanks – but that we should swallow it, because it is worth 10 times that amount by way of a waterfront clear of industry.

I agree. Make the deal.

Mark MacDonald says the biggest shake-up in Cornwall municipal election history is set to rattle city hall on Oct. 27 with the force of an 8.5 magnitude earthquake.

The former councillor, who took a bold step in attempting to unseat Bob Kilger in the 2010 mayoral race, is back in the race, this time his hat has been tossed into the councillor ring.

MacDonald, who at his current campaign clip could wear out two sets of running shoes before election day, is convinced this is the year of the Big Shake-up.

How big of a change around the council table?

“I see nine (new faces),” he says.

Nine!

That means only one incumbent councillor (he agrees that Kilger is a shoein as mayor) will be returning, which might explain why he backed off on a second shot at the title. He’s a pretty good bet to make it back as a councillor.

Never in the history of modern (post WWII) municipal elections has city council seen that kind of change.

Of course, that would not mean nine of the 10 councillors would be defeated. At least one, possibly two, might decided against running. But even seven incumbents losing would be a monumental, unprecedented changing of the guard.

MacDonald feels the old guard has become stale and says he senses great unrest among the unwashed.

Perhaps. But history says a wholesale change is highly unlikely.

If Elaine MacDonald and Bernadette Clement decide to run again, and the betting is they will, the ladies will lead the field. And it is hard to foresee, at this point, any more than two of the others being put out to pasture. That could mean four new councillors which by previous elections is major facelift.

But nine new faces?

Not a chance.

This included a hard-to-get face-to-face meeting with the company president in Montreal.

ROUND’N’BOUT The new condo building going up at Second and Pitt streets (1 Second St. E.) raises the bar on condo prices in the city. The luxury, fourth-floor units (2,467 square feet) are listed at $846,650, by far the most expensive condo units listed in the city but still much less expensive than similiar units in larger centres. Few years back a Queen’s University professor who is an authority on demographics said Brockville and Cornwall were two small communities that would benefit from a shift by big city retirees to smaller communities where amenities were easier to access and housing far less expensive.

Clara Hughes came to town last Tuesday.

I don’t get out much, so I’m probably the only person in town who had to look it up, so I won’t bore you with the details. But it took six police cars with sirens blazing to escort her and two other cyclists across town to Trinity High School. I’ve seen Royal motorcades with less and in bigger cities than Cornwall. That’s at least three police officers and vehicles with nothing..better..to..do. But these days, it’s all about appearances. I have no argument with Clara or her cause, which is mental health. I just wonder if the reception was a bit over the top. They almost outnumbered the other cars on the road!

On a different topic. Our city council

began some years back with the environment as it’s first priority. I thought I’d take a look at how they’re doing.

It began with the geese. Our duly elected have tried all sorts of scare tactics to “encourage” geese to move away from downtown, using dogs, flapping flags and sound devices that probably scare the rest of us more than the geese. After several years of this, the geese are still there and will be back again this year, seemingly unperturbed by all the fooferah. Maybe we should pave over Lamoureux Park and build condos. That’ll show em!

Then came beavers and an apparently evil city plan to do them in, saved only by a brave cohort of beaver lovers who spend their every waking moment in Guindon Park playing with the big furry rodents. If you go there when the ice finally melts you’ll see that the beavers haven’t moved very far. I doubt they even noticed all the attention they drew.

Coyotes followed soon after, marauding around our northern precincts and gobbling up field mice, groundhogs, rabbits and possibly unwary cats and dogs. There were some pretty lethal plans being prepared but someone forgot to read provincial legislation, so at last count, they’re still there as well.

Then it was pigeons. Council couldn’t really decide if the target was domestic racing pigeons or the wild variety that live downtown, the ones that most of us see at any time. They used big words like histoplasmosis to show they really meant business. They may have used some others that I can’t spell. In any event, they voted in tighter new rules for the domestic birds and voiced all manner of empty threats for the feral kind, but the pigeons are still downtown, perhaps growing in number.

The latest focus is trees. At least they’re stationary, so what can go wrong? Actually, it’s not really the trees. It’s the bugs in the trees

and they’re a moving feast. If only we could find something to feast on them. Then again, they’re Chinese bugs, and not everyone likes Chinese food. Worse yet, they’ve migrated to Canada through the U.S. So, do we boycott Chinese or American goods? Tough decision.

The bugs are already here so boycotting anything now won’t achieve much, but why destroy a good campaign theme.

We’re going to spend some $5 million to deal with them. The Americans use lethal chemicals that aren’t approved for use in Canada, yet anyway, so most of our money will go to damage control and replacing dead trees. I doubt the bugs will notice; they’re just passing through.

So, efforts to change our local environment haven’t really worked out that well. In fact, if council had done nothing at all, Mother Nature probably wouldn’t have noticed the difference.

And that’s the way I see it.

CORNWALL, Ontario – The Upper Canada chapter of the Professional Engineers of Ontario celebrated National Engineering Month at the return of the annual student bridge building competition in Cornwall last Saturday.

Area students from grade five to 12 were tasked with building a bridge out of 200 Popsicle sticks and white school glue to test its weightbearing capabilities before cracking under the pressure of a specialized machine called the ‘bridge buster.’

Erik Ronkin, 12, spent a week building his bridge and the hard work paid off with a second place victory in the junior division (grades six to eight). In front of a large crowd at the Cornwall Square, the budding engineer’s sturdy structure was able to hold a load of 2.26 kilograms, almost double the amount of many of his competitors.

“My dad told me about this competition and I took the challenge,” said Ronkin, a sixth grade student at Rose des Vents. “It was something fun to try and I will probably do this when I get older.”

His father, Dimitri, is a network engineer at The St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corporation. He was proud to see his son

follow in his path, but noted because of the video game Minecraft, which allows its players to build large virtual constructions, Erik wasn’t breaking any new ground. Dimitri showed off an impressive 3-D bridge and canal lock system on his smartphone that his son made in the game.

“It’s a video game I don’t mind him playing because it provides endless opportunities to learn engineering skills,” said Dimitri. “It would be interesting if all the schools in the city and area participated in this competition.”

There were 17 students from local schools including Char-Lan District High School, Glengarry District High School, and St. Lawrence Secondary School who took part in the event.

The competition previously ran from 2001 to 2009. It came back after nearly a four-year hiatus due to a strong partnership between the Professional Engineers of Ontario (PEO) and the event’s main sponsor Engineering For Industry.

Steven Stang, chair of the Upper Canada chapter of PEO, noted that the event is a great way to pique the interest of a new generation of engineers.

“This year we decided to bring back our popular bridge building competition and the turnout was great,” said Stang. “Students

The first place winner in the junior division was the Char-Lan duo of Kaytlin Andrews and Charlotte Reed. Ronkin took the second spot and the Filliol brothers, all representing Notre Dame, placed third.

This year’s senior division (grades nine to 12) title went to CCVS’ Jonathan Ponnudurai.

The St. Lawrence team of Nicholas Williams, Brandon Heagle, Samual Handy, and Owen Dulmage won second place and their fellow schoolmate Andrew Crockett captured third.

Four years ago, the first block was completed when an art and culture plan was completed and implementation began. Examples how much progress has happened are reflected in new focus by Port Theatre group, Your Art Council for SDG, City/College MOU for Aultsville Theatre, new focus of The Art

Gallery, City Art & Culture Committee. We should also recognize the numerous initiatives held right across the three counties, from Dundas, to Glengarry without forgetting what has been happening in Stormont and the city.

The field of investment attraction today is focused on attracting jobs in a knowledge-based economy. SD&G and the City are working to regenerate downtowns and build healthy neighbourhoods so we can market ourselves as great places to live. We know that communities that offer lively cultural and entertainment options are magnets that attract and retain creative people. This creative workforce in turn generates wealth. Culture, then, is a primary measure of economic attractiveness. People are not secondary assets that follow business and investment. We are an area where people want to live and work. Business and investment are beginning to follow people.

Our Leaders now are well aware that art and culture IS the “fourth pillar” of sustainability along with socio-economic and environmental

aspects of economic development. Its importance is growing with the impact of immigration. People searching the web for economic opportunities want to know at a glance where the resources specific to their cultural group are located within a community.

Does our investment-attraction strategy include promoting our community’s culture?

Yes it does! Are we able to succinctly present cultural information in a way that will draw the interest of site selectors, investors, entrepreneurs and creative people? We are getting there!

To add to what is already in place, an update of the old culture plan, now four years old is essential for all SDG Municipalities and the City. The time is now. Such an update could be the opportunity for those elected late this year to start with an updated strategic plan that includes a series of recommendations that reflects what has been accomplished and what taxpayers want and expect from their elected officials and administrations.

Our Region is, and always will be, a community that values family life and our quality of living on the beautiful St. Lawrence River. We support progressive community development which recognizes our unique cultural, social, economic and natural environment assets. We strongly support educational excellence and lifelong learning as keys to success for our community and its residents. We recognize the contribution of our existing businesses, while seeking opportunities to diversify and strengthen our economy and employment in this growing sector.

For all of you out there, who have been working hard to raise community awareness of the importance of developing the art & culture sector keep up the good work. CORNWALL, Ontario – North Stormont is changing the way it does business.

As the township works toward completing its 2014 economic strategy three-phase plan, 100 attendees rallied at a special meeting in Avonmore this month to learn how each level of government can help support their business.

Keynote speaker Maxime Bernier, Minister of State for Small Business and Tourism, delivered one of several presentations on various funding programs.

Michel Moisan, Ontario Ministry of Agriculture and Food & Rural Affairs (OMAFRA), detailed the framework of government programs such as the Rural Economic Development Plan (RED), Local Food Fund (LFF), and Growing Forward 2 (GF2).

All three programs shared the common goal of making the region economically competitive, by increasing the purchase of Ontario foods, and helping food and agriproduct businesses, organizations, and collaborations build their own plan and select opportunities to help grow their profits, expand their markets, and manage risks.

“Developing partnerships and sharing information with key community partners throughout Stormont, Dundas and Glengarry

is essential to our region’s future economic success,” said Terry Besner, economic development and communications officer for the United Counties of Stormont, Dundas, and Glengarry (SDG).

Besner and Alex Gibson, North Stormont’s economic development officer, were also presenters at the inaugural business breakfast.

“Our community response was positive and it looks like there are more events like this on the horizon,” said Gibson.

Shingles may be lost to harsh winter winds and storms, so homeowners should examine the roof to determine if any shingles were lost (lost shingles might even be lying around the property) or suffered damage that’s considerable enough to require replacement. Summer can be especially brutal

on shingles, especially those that suffered significant damage during the winter. If left unchecked or unaddressed, problems with damaged shingles can quickly escalate into larger issues when spring rains and summer sun inevitably arrive, so homeowners should prioritize fixing or replacing damaged shingles as quickly as possible.

Check for freeze damage: Frozen temperatures can be hard on humans and homes alike, but unlike humans who can stay inside when temperatures dip below freezing, homes are forced to withstand the elements throughout the winter. External hose faucets are often susceptible to freeze damage. To inspect such faucets, turn the water on and then place a thumb or finger over the opening of the faucet. If your thumb or finger can completely stop the flow of water, the pipe where the water is coming from is likely damaged and will need to be replaced.

Examine the lawn for low spots: Once a lawn has thawed out, homeowners can patrol their properties looking for low spots in the yard or even low spots within spitting distance of the home’s foundation. Such spots increase the likelihood of flooding. Flooding near a home’s foundation increases the risk of potentially costly damage, while low spots on the lawn that go ignored can make great breeding grounds for insects, including mosquitoes, when the weather warms up.

When low spots are detected, fill them in with compacted soil. Compacted soil can prevent spring rains from flooding a yard or damaging a home’s foundation.

Understanding all the options New windows often appear at the top of the renovation list when comfort and energy sa­vings are the main goal. There are a my­riad of options available, however, so it is a good idea to do your research before making any decisions. Here, we debunk a few myths to help you find the best window solutions for your home.

Myth: PVC is less efficient than other materials with regard to noise insulation, ventilation, and protecting against home break-ins.

Reality: over the last few years, new types of PVC (polyvinyl chloride) have been produced; it is now more rigid and therefore more resistant to wind and break-ins. In addition, PVC now provides good thermal insulation, thanks to its multi-chamber profile techno­ logy. What’s more, this material can withstand any type of weather and is easy to maintain — sponging it down once a year is all it needs.

Myth: aluminum windows are not as well insulated as other types of windows.

Reality: aluminum can meet or even surpass current insulating standards when a thermal break (a strip of urethane that blocks the transfer of heat

through the me­tal) is inserted between the two profiles. The advantages of this type of window are its rigidity, solar gain, and its ability to withstand any type of weather. Pow­der coatings give a variety of choice in colour and finish.

Myth: a wood window requires a great deal of maintenance.

Reality: beautiful, natural wood deserves to be cared for year after year. However, maintenance work can now be delayed for seve­ral years thanks to the application of insecticide, fungicide, dampproofing treatments, and factory-applied finishes.

Essentials for the budding handyman Maybe nobody in their right mind would call you a great handyman, but you can take heart in one thing: you’re not alone! There is something that can improve your chances of doing a job right the first time, however. In­vesting in a few good quality basic tools can help you do the job in a timely fashion without constantly having to borrow your neighbour’s tools.

For the budding handyman, here is a list of what your first toolbox should contain: • hammer (not too heavy nor too light, with a rubber handle) • tape measure (at least 25 feet / 7.5 metres) • level (at least 9 inches / 23 cm) and a set square • hand saw or circular saw • miter box (for cutting angles) • box cutter knife • set of screwdrivers or screwdriver with multiple heads or power screwdriver • long-nose pliers, cutting pliers, clamping pli­ers, and locking pliers • adjustable wren­ches, rat­­­­chet and so­­cket set, and Al­len key • sandpaper and san­­ding block • safety glasses, glo­­­ves, and protective mask

• Keep your faucets, sinks, tile, and shower doors shiny and new with car wax.

The wax forms a protective barrier against water and soap buildup.

• Put in a lighting system that’s turned on by movement sensors. It is possible to reduce your power bill using the lighting only if needed. You will feel safer using motiontriggered lighting, given that they may well scare unwelcome predators away.

• Buy a commercial polish, to make brass doorknobs shine. Warm water and a little dish soap or a homemade paste of equal parts vinegar and baking soda will scrub off dirt and make stainless steel and glass doorknobs sparkle.

• If you get a water mark on a wooden table, rub the stain with Petroleum Jelly and let sit for 24 hours. Then wipe off the excess and polish as usual.

• To get the water spots off of chrome faucets, after cleaning rub them with a piece of waxed paper- it will keep the water spots and fingerprints from sticking to the clean metal. You can also use a piece of waxed paper on your swifter sweeper.

Just rip off a piece the size of the sweeper, attach, and wipe away. The dirt sticks to the paper- so much cheaper than buying the refill kits.

A wire brush could damage the finish. Brush on paint stripper that is safe for all surfaces. Polish with beeswax furniture polish or brass polish.

• Once you open the brown sugar, toss a few marshmallows in to keep it soft.

• Hang your brooms and mops instead of storing them on the floor. This keeps them from getting mildewed and bent.

• To keep spaghetti sauce from staining your plastic ware, spray the inside of the storage container with a little bit of non-

Cornwall Colts Peewee B playoff champs The Peewee B Cornwall Colts are the Upper Canada Minor Hockey League playoff champions. The Cornwall Colts had a great post-season posting six wins, one loss, and one tie to claim the title. Their first round pinned the Colts against the Alexandria Glens where a convincing 15-3 and 9-3 wins respectively propelled them into the second round to face the undefeated Long Sault Selects. Falling 4-0 in the first game the Colts rallied from behind in the next two to win 4-2 and 3-1 giving the Selects their only two loses of the season. Their reward for knocking off the undefeated Selects was Perth Lanark Wings who were the western division champions and second overall in the league. The Colts jumped out to a quick lead in the series winning the first game 8-3. In game two the Colts had to travel to Perth where a hard fought 2-2 tie established a chance to win

it all back on home ice. Cornwall completed the home victory and knocked off another top ranked team to claim the highest trophy in the area.

The remarkable playoff run could not have been accomplished without the effort of every single player on their roster. Timely scoring and great two-way play from their forwards which includes: Evan Brunet, Brayden Valiquette, Tyler Bowen, Will Swamp, Braeden Levac, Nick O’Brien, Alex O’Brien, Terell Thomas, Rowisonkies Barnes and Josh Barnes. A great defensive core shutting down opposing teams and providing offence included: Jeremy Latour, Mick Miller, Noah White, Mathieu Dallaire, Pat Campeau and Alex Oakes.

Finally the goaltending throughout the playoffs was rock solid for every game, they included: Sebastien Martin and Justin Leclair.

The best part of last Saturday night’s River Kings/Jonquiere game three, was that we were treated to 59:32 of high energy up and down, old school hockey. Then the roof caved in and a ‘silly string’ of events took over.

Sad part is, I love this brand of shinny and I know that it can get the fans excited, it doesn’t have to end the way it did in game 3.

This series began as a bit of a miss match, the Kings seemed lethargic in the first two games, no one gave them any hope. It appears to have changed.

When the Kings showed up for game 3 in Jonquiere, forgetting their socks and sweaters - up 2-0 in the series, the Marquis must have thought - how bush is that - these River Kings must surely have given up.

If it was a decoy, it worked, as the Kings surprised the Marquis and did it again on Saturday night to tie the best of seven at 2.

I have said from the get go, that this brand of hockey can be so much fun, even the old hockey purists love the speed this brand of hockey can bring. One man who has watched hockey for sixty years remembered the good ole days at the Water Street arena and believes this is a 2014 version of those heady senior hockey days.

Hockey is a release for most fans - allows them to venture out to the rink and have some fun. What happened in the final 30 seconds of game three could hardly be considered fun.

Well, perhaps for a few minutes, but the fans behind the Marquis bench raised the ante on fun and turned it into an embarrassing moment, a moment why, our council will not jump on board to help keep this brand of hockey in the city - insurance or not, the Comets before and the Kings now, scares them to death.

Make no mistake, the Marquis could have played the game out, avoiding the nonsense, so they too are to blame. I have no issues with some yelling and taunting, the players can be as bad as some fans - but when you throw things at players and fill the bench with garbage or spray coaches with silly string, you deserve what you get in return and that, unfortunately, will translate into a non

Our security is powerless to fend off the masses and who could blame them, especially when fans are in a crazed state. Raising the glass behind the bench or not allowing fans to sit in the reds behind the visitors bench may be the answer.

Unfortunately it had better be, as this team can not afford four to six cops at a game, but that is what will happen for game 6, the city could insist upon it and that will cost almost as much as half the Kings - game night salary cap.

The video doesn’t lie - the guy who threw the first punch to disaster last Saturday was not the Marquis Alex Penner, his mates calmed him down and he was on his way to the room when he was hit with debris tossed by a fan, the same fan who sprayed the bench with silly string - yes you, in the grey under amour hoodie - you ruined a pretty good night. You may not be responsible for Penners forehead gash, but you are the reason the Kings could

CORNWALL, Ontario – A Cornwall mother and local school teacher is leading the charge for autism awareness in the city and eastern Ontario.

Inspired by her five-year-old daughter, Karli, who was diagnosed with autism when she was just 15 months old, Jennifer Fullarton is marking World Autism Awareness Day on Wednesday in a big way.

Fullarton is coordinating Autism Ontario’s Raise the Flag campaign for all 87 schools within the Upper Canada District School Board (UCDSB), as she prepares for a twopart fundraising event in mid-April.

The campaign will encourage UCDSB schools to increase awareness about the condition by raising the Autism Ontario flag, providing links to helpful materials outlining how students can support their peers with autism, and videos offering insight into students with autism.

Her and her daughter’s story made such an impact with Autism Ontario that Karli is the official poster child for the campaign on Facebook.

“I’m doing this as a mother of a child who has autism, I didn’t realize the impact it was going to make in each school,” said Fullarton.

“It’s overwhelming the e-mails from teachers and principals supporting me with my quest to raise autism awareness in classrooms.”

She hopes the message gets to parents who need help dealing with the diagnosis and are looking to secure a normal life for their autistic child. Fullarton says parents need to know the warning signs of the condition as well to ensure their child can receive the necessary care immediately. Thanks to an early diagnosis from her doctor, Karli was referred to see a developmental pediatrician at the Ottawa Children’s Treatment Centre.

Since other parents might have to wait two years to see such a specialist, Fullarton felt extremely fortunate.

But when Karli was first diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD), the shock was overwhelming. Fullarton had to quickly embrace that her daughter was living in an autistic world.

“Karli has never said a word in her life, so it’s important that I’m her voice,” she said.

The flag campaign is also her way of educating people to help them understand and be more empathetic to children suffering from autism. Taking her daughter to a store is often a difficult task since loud noises or bright lights can cause her a great deal of distress. But what really bothers Fullarton about going shopping with Karli are other

“I wish people would be more understanding and wouldn’t stop and stare,” she said. “If Karli was ever having a meltdown and someone said ‘Is there anything I can help you with?’ – that would be incredible.”

Pumpkinferno set for new look CORNWALL, Ontario – Upper Canada Village’s new premiere event will be getting even spookier this Halloween season.

Pumpkinferno will be adding more exhibits to over half of the event using new themes and their trademark intricate designs and artistry thanks to a cash injection of $75,000 from Celebrate Ontario.

The St. Lawrence Parks Commission (SLPC) was awarded $150,000 from Celebrate Ontario for two of their major fall events.

Pumpkinferno, named Ontario Tourism Event of the Year in mid-November, is a mesmerizing display of creative ingenuity set against the night-time backdrop of Upper Canada Village.

In its first seven days, over 12,000 visitors took part in the evening walking tour through artistically designed exhibits with over 6,000 hand-carved pumpkins.

Upper Canada Village will open for the 2014 season on Wednesday, May 7 and Fort Henry National Historic Site of Canada will open on Saturday, May 17. Visit the website www.parks.on.ca for more information.

Des jeunes diplômés postsecondaires sont séduits par nos régions rurales Le 26 mars 2014 – Lors du 4e séjour exploratoire de Place aux jeunes les 21, 22 et 23 mars derniers, une dizaine de jeunes diplômés postsecondaires bilingues se sont déplacés pour découvrir les nombreux avantages de vivre dans les régions de Stormont, Dundas, Glengarry (SDG), Cornwall et de PrescottRussell. Grâce au séjour exploratoire, Place aux jeunes vise à faciliter l’établissement des jeunes gradués dans nos communautés rurales et répondre aux besoins de main-d’oeuvre spécialisée de la région.

Trillium a l’intention de reprendre ses activités sur le site appartenant à Transports Canada ont commencé et se poursuivent. L’objectif de la ville de Cornwall et du Conseil des Mohawks d’Akwesasne est de devenir propriétaires des terres du port, qui comprennent le site en cause.

La ville de Cornwall a adopté un règlement municipal de restriction provisoire le 9 décembre 2013, qui empêche toute utilisation des terres du port de Cornwall à d’autres fins qu’un espace vert pendant un an. Le règlement vise à donner au Conseil municipal et au personnel de la ville la possibilité d’étudier la question et ensuite d’envisager l’adoption d’autres stratégies de zonage pour la zone en question.

À l’école Rose des Vents, tous les élèves de l’école ont célébré la semaine de la francophonie du 17 au 21 mars.

Lundi, nous avons amorcé la semaine avec une cérémonie d’ouverture. Chaque classe choisissait un élève qui était un modèle francophone pour tenir le drapeau créé par les élèves de la classe. Pendant la cérémonie, deux enseignantes ont expliqué les cinq défis à relever tout au long de la semaine. Le premier défi était de résoudre une devinette.

Mardi, nous devions créer des mots à partir des lettres inscrites dans un tableau Boggle.

Le Comité de gouvernance de l’Hôpital communautaire de Cornwall est à la recherche de candidates et de candidats bénévoles pour combler des postes vacants au Conseil d’administration L’Hôpital communautaire de Cornwall assure les services de soins actifs et est gouverné par un conseil composé de douze bénévoles élus et six administrateurs nommés d’office. Les membres doivent assister aux réunions du conseil d’administration ainsi qu’à toute réunion ordinaire des comités. À titre de bénévoles d’une société de bienfaisance, les membres du conseil d’administration ne sont pas rémunérés pour leurs services.

Mercredi, nous avions à résoudre un mot croisé. Jeudi, nous devions écrire une phrase en utilisant des mots clés. Vendredi, nous avons découvert le défi mystère, il s’agissait d’expliquer pourquoi nous sommes fiers d’être francophone. Après chaque défi, des médailles d’or, d’argent et de bronze ont été remises aux classes gagnantes selon le cycle (maternelle et jardin, première à la troisième année et quatrième à la sixième année).

Mon défi préféré était le défi Boggle. Les classes de la quatrième à la sixième année devaient former des mots avec les lettres écrites dans le tableau et chaque mot devait contenir un accent. En dix minutes, ma classe a écrit 75 mots et nous avons gagné la médaille de bronze pour ce défi!

Malgré les nombreux efforts qu’elle a voués à la recherche d’une solution acceptable, la ville de Cornwall tient à informer la communauté que Trillium Distribution Cornwall Inc. a l’intention de reprendre les travaux au site appartenant à Transport Canada au port de Cornwall. Les travaux pourraient reprendre dès la semaine courante.

Trillium et Transport Canada ont conclu un contrat de location qui prévoit la construction et l’utilisation de réservoirs sur les lieux. La ville de Cornwall demeure inébranlable quant à son opposition à l’utilisation continue du port de Cornwall pour le transport et le stockage de chlorure de calcium. La ville n’a accordé aucune autorisation pour ce projet; Transport Canada soutient qu’il exerce une compétence exclusive sur l’aménagement des terres. « Je suis déçu que Trillium ait décidé de ne pas reconnaître le règlement municipal provisoire de la ville », a indiqué le maire Bob Kilger. « Je demeure confiant que nous parviendrons à trouver une solution qui mettra définitivement fin à cette activité dans le secteur riverain de Cornwall par le biais du processus de cession. » Les négociations de cession avec le Conseil des Mohawks d’Akwesasne et Transport Canada

I’ll tell you, but first, some background, just in case you aren’t familiar with the story of someone who was a regular feature of my “Dances With Words” columns from 1998 to 2010.

Her name was ‘Keesha’, a.k.a. ‘The Little White Dog’. She was my delightful companion for 12 years. She accompanied me on my 2005 hitchbiking (hitchhiking + bicycling) across Canada. She accompanied me on my paddling adventures in the

As we passed over a railway overpass, my attention was grabbed by the sight of four Abrams tanks resting on flatcars in the switching yard below. That sight demanded immediate exploration, so I swerved onto the exit ramp.
