ANNIVERSARY THROUGHOUT 2020

2020 will mark the 40th anniversary of Mount Edgcumbe Hospice in St Austell, the first hospice to be built in Cornwall. The building was formally opened to patients on 6th October 1980 and was the legacy of a remarkable woman, Mrs Enid DaltonWhite MBE of Polruan. She led a determined campaign to fund the hospice having nursed two husbands through cancer.

She was passionate about providing the right care, in the right place and at the right time.

In the late 1970s, The Countess of Mount Edgcumbe who was President of the appeal to build Mount Edgcumbe Hospice, wrote; “This charity was floated on a stream of sympathy which exists for those suffering from cancer. The practical aim is to meet, urgently, the desperate need, by creating an after-care home in Cornwall. Your gift will help ease so much suffering and distress.”

Today the hospice continues to reflect the passion of its founders and has supported many thousands of people through the most difficult of times. The care has developed and advanced over time and is now provided for patients with a wide range of terminal illnesses.

Meanwhile, the purpose built St Julia’s Hospice in Hayle that’s also run by Cornwall Hospice Care and was opened by The Sisters of the Daughters of the Cross in 1999, will celebrate its 21st anniversary in 2020.

In 2006 the charity Cornwall Hospice Care was formed, taking over the running of both hospices together.

Our 40th anniversary is about celebrating the vital role our two hospices play in the community of Cornwall and our people, staff and volunteers, who continue to uphold the values on which our hospices are built.

Run Falmouth

Half Marathon 1 5 t h M a r c h 2 02 0 Run Falmouth Half Marathon is the 4th race in Cornwall Road Running Grand Prix Series sponsored by Cornwall Glass.

The 13.1 mile route starts in the lee of Pendennis Castle following the coast past the beautiful beaches of Gyllyngvase and Swanpool, glimpsing Maenporth Beach as the route rises to give fabulous views over the bay back towards Pendennis Castle. The route follows undulating Cornish country lanes featuring open fields and wooded scenes, passing the beautiful Falmouth Golf Course twice. The run is well supported along the whole route as locals from the picturesque villages come out to cheer our runners on.

This sell out race is limited to 800 places only. The sense of achievement, on what is a challenging yet rewarding half marathon is enormous, join us for this stunning run

Run Falmouth Kids Fun Run

1 5 t h M a rc h 2 02 0 The Run Falmouth Kids Fun Run is a great addition to the Run Falmouth weekend. In only its second year, the support from runners and families has been extraordinary.

The Kids Fun Run will follow the first mile of the Run Falmouth course; starting just after the Ships and Castles Leisure Centre car park entrance and along beautiful coastal scenery including Pendennis Castle, Pendennis Head and finishing at the Falmouth Hotel.

Run Falmouth Kids Run is open to children aged 3-16.

Every year we look for 15 runners to take on the biggest of challenges and run the Virgin Money London Marathon for our charity.

Open Gardens Spring to Autumn 2020

One of the great summer pleasures is to go and visit a few of the wonderful Cornish gardens we are lucky enough to have on our doorstep.

Our Open Gardens campaign offers you the chance to see gardens that are not often open to the public and an opportunity to have a peek into these unique and hidden gems around our county.

We aim to provide a range of refreshments at each garden, as well as selected plant sales and raffles or fundraisers.

Reflections

(In Memor y) Sunday 17th May & Sunday 5th July

Our in memory wicker raft, designed in the shape of an open lotus flower, is adorned with hundreds of bright pink freshly cut gerbera flowers, sitting side by side with your hand written message of remembrance to your loved one lost.

With some gentle background music and the sound of the sea, we come together as the raft is rowed slowly out to sea and out of sight.

The Alps Trek 17th to 21st June 2020 The Mont Blanc region boasts one of the world’s most renowned trekking circuits, with some of the most awe-inspiring scenery imaginable - all within a short hop from the UK! One magnificent highlight of this challenge is that we will visit three countries in just three days – France, Italy and Switzerland!

Our challenge is physically demanding and will test your stamina and determination, but the rewards are some of the most spectacular views Europe has to offer – an array of towering cliffs, waterfalls spilling from glaciers, forested tracks, open meadows and crystal clear lakes. It’s wonderful trekking and Mont Blanc is our constant companion throughout.

The World’s Largest Cream Tea Party 20th June 2020 Guinness World Record At tempt

Do you want to be a World Record breaker? Join us as we attempt to break the current World Record for the Largest Cream Tea Party. We believe this should be held in Cornwall, the home of the best cream teas! The event will be a traditional cream tea party with a 1940s theme featuring entertainment from Company B and the Liberty Sisters.

To break the world record we need at least 1,200 people to sit down and enjoy a proper ‘ansum cream tea; we need you to drink a cup of tea and eat a jam and clotted cream scone, jam first of course!

Coast To Coast Walk 11th to 13th September 2020

Based at Camp HQ, located centrally in Cornwall, you will be bused to Padstow on Saturday morning, after a hearty breakfast, to walk across Cornwall and into Camp on Day 1. Awaiting you will dinner, drinks and music; a proper party!

Light Up A Life November and December 2020 Christmas is a special time of year when thoughts turn to spending time with friends and family.

Memory Tree As a personal dedication and tribute to our loved ones lost, both Mount Edgcumbe Hospice and St Julia’s Hospice proudly display our handcrafted copper memory trees designed and made by Cornish artist Sharon McSwinney.

Situated in the peaceful atmospheres of the quiet rooms, a memory tree leaf is a wonderful way to create a permanent tribute in memory of your loved one.

Each leaf is made to order and will carry your personal message.

There are six designs to choose from Ivy, Oak, Acer, Sycamore, Horse Chestnut and Beech.

Each leaf costs ÂŁ100 and will remain on your chosen tree for a year. After that time, you can choose to renew for another year, or your leaf can be returned to you in a presentation box to treasure.
