INTRODUCTION Welcome to our new 2020/21 wine list Welcome to our new wine list as we embark on a new decade, and what a last 10 years it has been. During this time we have seen our on-trade business grow beyond all recognition and for this we thank you, our customers. Relationships remain core to our business and we continue to invest heavily in the infrastructure behind the scenes to offer the best in service. With this in mind we are very proud of our new state of the art storage facility in London. Over those last 10 years we have seen some incredible developments in wine technology and the emergence of some brilliant new regions and trends. What a time for wine! Chile has been a huge focus for us, an area where we have seen a dynamic shift with growers pushing the limits in their pursuit of wines of character and a “sense of place.” The Chilean wine industry today could not be more vibrant and this is why we decided it was time to dive in further. Please refer to pages 72 to 73 to explore further. Our work has not stopped here and to see a full list of new wines and producers please refer to pages 6 and 7. We have a number of UK events planned in the months ahead from tastings to masterclasses to supplier visits and showcases. Please follow @corneyandbarrow across our social media platforms as well as our website (www.corneyandbarrow.com) which has a myriad of information available 24/7. Thank you again for your kind support and we look forward to embarking on the new decade together.

CORNEY & BARROW HOUSE WINES AND SPIRITS

CORNEY & BARROW OWN LABEL

We are lucky to work with some of the best wine growers in the world Quality is their watchword, and it is ours too. It can be difficult to find wines of benchmark quality at an approachable price tag. That is why we created the Corney & Barrow Own Label range. Made to a secret recipe, created over time with a number of top producers, these wines get true kid-glove treatment! Every single year, our buyers will shut themselves away with the winemakers for days on end in the cellars, tasting samples from hundreds of vats and barrels, selecting only the very best from the vintage. And so the wine will be subtly different in character every year, but our underlying recipe and commitment to quality remain the same.

CHAMPAGNE

CHAMPAGNE DELAMOTTE Delamotte is the sixth oldest Champagne house, founded in 1760. Like sister house, the legendary Champagne Salon, Delamotte is based in the grand cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Something of an insider’s champagne ‘pour ceux qui savent’ (for those in the know), Delamotte may be a discreet name but its reputation is immense in the champagne trade. Sought out for its delicacy, refined texture and subtle autolytic quality, Delamotte’s exceptional pedigree is the result of impeccable vineyards and extensive lees ageing.

CHAMPAGNE SALON Arguably the rarest of all fine champagnes, made in minuscule quantities a few times a decade, Champagne Salon is the legacy of one man: Eugène-Aimé Salon. Obsessed with Chardonnay - in his eyes the sole grape capable of true finesse - he planted Le Jardin de Salon, an exceptional chalk-rich vineyard in the grand cru village of Le Mesnil-sur-Oger. Considered an eccentric not only for making champagne from a single origin but also a single grape variety, Eugène-Aimé Salon can be credited with pioneering the blanc de blancs style.

SPARKLING ROSÉ 47

Ambriel Rosé Brut Traditional Method, West Sussex - NEW!

V

AMBRIEL Ambriel was founded in 2006 by couple Wendy and Charles Outhwaite, who left successful careers as a QC and financier to pursue their dream of making sparkling wine. Their beautiful West Sussex vineyard boasts rare, greensand soils, highly-prized for the vagaries of the English climate, and planted to the classic champagne varieties. A small-scale, handson operation with meticulous attention to detail, Ambriel is run sustainably with an emphasis on biodiversity. England’s expressive orchard fruit style and naturally high acidities are actively embraced, softened by extended ageing on the lees and cork.

BREAKY BOTTOM Breaky Bottom is a gem of a wine estate, just 6 acres nestled in the South Downs in East Sussex, producing tiny quantities of high quality traditional method sparkling wines. Founder Peter Hall, now in his 70s, discovered Breaky Bottom in the early 1970s and saw in its micro-climate and chalk-rich soils – similar to Champagne and the Loire valley – the potential to produce exceptional wines. While he initially produced still wines (highly acclaimed) from hybrid varieties including Seyval Blanc, over time he turned to sparkling wines and also to the Champagne varieties.

ETS. JEAN-PIERRE MOUEIX The late Jean-Pierre Moueix founded Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix in 1937 in Libourne, Bordeaux, particularly concentrating on relatively unkown Pomerol and Saint-Émilion. In the 1950s, JeanPierre grew the merchanting business but also, very astutely, began to acquire properties, notably, Châteaux Trotanoy, La Grave and Latour à Pomerol and Belair-Monange. The company is responsible today for distributing many of the most revered wines of Saint-Émilion and Pomerol which they have driven from obscurity to the heights of worldwide demand.

TERTRE ROTEBOEUF François Mitjavile is a man unto himself, not even conforming in his non-conformity. He turned his back on a conventional life to embrace the challenges of making fine wine. He resolutely gets on with things, his own way, producing staggeringly Saint-Émilion Grand Cru. Nurturing this six hectare amphitheatre of cool clay-limestone, François, aided and abetted by his wife Miloute, his son Louis and daughter Nina, produces what is now something of a cult wine, gloriously decadent, supple and complex.

This tiny estate has been in the family for over 100 years, and is owned and run today by 4th generation brothers Olivier and Marc-Emmanuel Cyrot. While Marc looks after the business side, Olivier is the winemaker, achieving critical acclaim for his classic, fragrant Volnays and beautifullystructured Pommards from meticulously-tended, terraced vineyards planted high above the village.

DOMAINE FR ANÇOIS CARILLON François Carillon is the 16th generation of farmers based in Burgundy’s revered Puligny-Montrachet. François is a viticulturalist of the highest quality, tirelessly striving to produce the best grapes possible. He is fortunate in his vine parcels – splendid sites in both Puligny and Chassagne. Therein lie the secrets of his wines – terroir, and sheer hard graft on the part of team Carillon. The wines have an innate purity about them, an attractive mineral focus and a real sense of place.

DOMAINE TR APET PÈRE & FILS These wines have gone from strength to strength under the tenure of Jean-Louis Trapet and his team, offering wonderful purity, precision and focus. Jean-Louis effected many changes, since taking over the reins of the domaine in 1990, the most radical being the wholesale change to biodynamic viticulture. The family is acutely aware of their responsibility to past, present and future generations, where their vineyard holdings are concerned., the improvement in quality being an unexpected bonus.

DOMAINE JACQUES PRIEUR These vineyards encompass so many of the greatest grands crus; Chambertin, Clos de Bèze, Musigny, Clos de Vougeot, Échézeaux, Corton-Bressandes, Corton-Charlemagne, Chevalier Montrachet and Montrachet, as well as a host of premiers crus traversing Beaune, Volnay and Meursault, the latter, home to the domaine - an eye-watering collection. Édouard Labruyère took to the helm here in 2008 – a breath of fresh air, inspirational and with tremendous vision and ambition for Domaine Jacques Prieur. These vineyards are in extremely safe hands.

DOMAINE VINCENT DAMPT Vincent Dampt is the scion of one of the most respected winemaking families in Chablis, the son of Daniel Dampt and grandson of Jean Defaix. After training in Burgundy and Marlborough, New Zealand, Vincent returned to Chablis armed with modern perspectives to complement traditional winemaking approaches. Rigour in the vineyard is paramount, while his wines are made using the purest juice and only the finest lees. The Dampt style is elegant and pure yet accessible, with the classic crushed shell profile of the appellation.

OLIVIER LEFLAIVE Olivier Leflaive’s operation is surely without parallel in Burgundy, as impressive for the sheer range of wines as for their consistency and quality year on year. Olivier’s philosophy is built on respect for the vines and those who tend them. While the house continues to buy grapes from the same 120 or so small vignerons who have supplied them for years, Olivier also owns vineyards in the Côte, managed by legendary technical team Franck Grux and Philippe Grillet. Olivier’s house style is elegant, fresh and geared for pleasure; true to appellation and cru.

DOMAINE BONNEAU DU MARTR AY Observing the unmistakable hill of Corton, essentially you are looking at Bonneau du Martray – one block of 11 hectares. In 2017, the Le Bault de La Morinière family – only the third set of owners in 12 centuries - sold a majority share to another great vineyard custodian, E Stanley Kroenke (of California’s Screaming Eagle, Jonata and The Hilt). The Domaine is benefiting enormously from his commitment and investment – so exciting. This unique vineyard creates wines of precision and grace.

DOMAINE CARRETTE Domaine Carrette is a small family domaine located at the foot of the famous rock of Vergisson, in the beautiful rolling hills of the Mâconnais region. The current custodians of the estate are third generation Hervé Carrette, who grew up tending the vineyards, and his wife Nathalie, a highly qualified oenologist. These are beautifully made wines of great purity and typicity, predominantly from the Pouilly-Fuissé appellation, reflective of their clay-limestone soils and unique individual sites, among them future premiers crus.

DOMAINE LABRUYÈRE The Labruyère family have owned vineyards in Moulin-à-Vent since 1850, around the foot of the iconic windmill. Edouard Labruyère, at the helm since 2008, is determined to produce wines which are ambassadors for this great terroir. His attention to detail shows in the wines. Fragile soils dictate the vineyards are worked by hand or with a horse. Team Labruyère is usually the last to harvest their relatively small production, aiming for total, physiological as well as technical, ripeness. Impressive, serious food wines.

LOIRE

LOIRE CONTINUED

DOMAINE DU NOZAY Domaine du Nozay is a small, family-run estate in the heart of Sancerre country. The beautiful centuriesold manor house was a ruin when it was purchased in the late 1960s by Philippe de Benoist and his wife Marie-Hélène, who renovated the estate and planted the vineyards. Their son Cyril is now at the helm, and has converted the domaine to organic and biodynamic methods, inspired by his uncle Aubert de Villaine of legendary Domaine de la RomanéeConti. The wine is concentrated and pure with the fine minerality of the local terres blanches soils.

DOMAINE TISSIER Sancerre’s Domaine Tissier is a small, family-owned wine estate in Chavignol, one of the greatest wine villages within the Sancerre area. Founded in 1945, the domaine is run today by Roland Tissier’s grandchildren, viticulturalist Rodolphe and winemaker Florent. The estate spans ten hectares of prime south-facing vineyard slopes, whose exceptional mix of chalkclay and ‘silex’ (flint) soils are key to the wines’ unique structure, floral delicacy and mineral depth.

TARDIEU-LAURENT Michel Tardieu, joined now by oenologist son Bastien, is a négociant-éleveur, buying wines according to the quality of the vineyard, in their raw, fermented state. They then look after blending and maturation. Accurate translation of terroir and vintage, fundamental to the Tardieu mind-set means intervention is minimal. To ensure top quality ingredients, Michel and Bastien build up long-term, mutually beneficial relationships with a network of producers, who own specific, quality parcels of largely old vines. World-class wines which deserve their international acclaim.

VIGNOBLES GONNET The Gonnet family estate in Châteauneuf-du-Pape was developed in the 1950s. Its quality credentials could not be more impressive: 30 hectares of vineyards running up to Le Crau (arguably the most revered vineyard plot in the Châteauneuf-du-Pape appellation); sunny south/south-east facing slopes; soils littered with prized, heat-reflecting galets roulés (pudding stones); and low-yielding 110 year old vines. The wines have a common stylistic thread: while the region’s classic baked fruit is here in spades, they display a hallmark freshness and aromatic vivacity.

PRODUCTEURS PLAIMONT The Producteurs Plaimont winery is based in the village of Saint-Mont in Gascony, south-west France. Gascony’s population and vineyard decline in the 20th century was reversed by André Dubosc, a local man determined to reinvigorate this once thriving wineproducing region. He brought together a group of like-minded winegrowers, founding Plaimont in 1979. Their quality focused approach melds respect for tradition and innovation: ancient grape varieties have been resurrected; old vineyards have been restored, new ones planted, and environmentally sustainable practices embraced.

DOMAINE TR APET ALSACE Alsace is a star in ascendancy, in our view, so we were delighted when our friends Andrée and Jean-Louis Trapet, of Gevrey-Chambertin renown, decided to take over Andrée’s family’s vineyards in Alsace. They inherited generations of knowledge of these very particular terroirs and styles of wines and added their own experience, applying the same biodynamic disciplines as they exercise in Burgundy. The wines have an enticing, almost electric purity about them – superbly versatile with challenging dishes.

SCHLOSS SCHÖNBORN With 650 years of history and experience under its belt, the Schönborn family has amassed some spectacular sites. Average yields are kept low, resulting in wines with good concentration and real personality. People are often dismissive of German wines, regarding them as sweet. They do indeed have a certain residual sugar but this is ripeness, always balanced by fresh acidity. These are great food wines, extraordinarily versatile, offering diverse flavour profiles, from citrus and green apple through to the exotic.

BARTA ESTATE Barta Winery is located in the famous and acclaimed village of Mad in the heart of the Tokaji region. The philosophy at Barta is one of custodianship – they see themselves as part of recently re-established traditions. The vineyards are farmed organically, while the winemaking philosophy is one of minimal intervention, aiming for purity and character. Spanning dry styles as well as Szamorodni and Aszú, Barta’s wines are a celebration of the distinctive Furmint variety.

LA TUNELLA La Tunella is a small family winery based in the Colli Orientali del Friuli, near the border with Slovenia. The hilly countryside here is carpeted with handtended vines grown on sunny terraces, producing a range of expressive, beautifully-textured wines. Some are made from international grape varieties, others champion indigenous grapes found only in the region. It is the unique volcanic soil here, known locally as ‘ponca’, that is held to give the wines their intense yet subtle flavours and pure mouthfeel.

ITALY TENUTA DI TRINORO From the Val d’Orcia, southern Tuscany, this is an amazing property, brainchild of Andrea Franchetti, who created Trinoro, from scratch, producing trailblazing wines which immediately turned heads. The west-south-west facing vineyard is planted between 500 and 700 metres above sea level. The climate is continental, with very hot days but cool, autumnal nights. Dry, it is perfect for prolonged ripening and, yields restricted by severe pruning, this makes for astonishing richness and complexity. Picking bunch by bunch ensures optimal ripeness.

TENUTA DI BISERNO The Antinori name resonates throughout the wine world but Marchese Lodovico Antinori is pitched at a unique frequency. Legendary, maverick, genius, headstrong – all apply – but his imagination, vision and drive create world class wines. Rings no bells? Think Ornellaia and Masseto, of old, and now, the great Biserno – all created by Lodovico. In Bibbona, coastal, western Tuscany, cooled by sea breezes, the geology here is better suited to Bordeaux varietals than the ubiquitous Sangiovese. Outstanding food wines.

ITALY LE COLTURE The Le Colture winery is located in the lush hills around the village of Santo Stefano di Valdobbiadene, in the heart of Italy’s prosecco country. The Ruggeri family has been tending its vineyards here since the 16th century. Made from mature, low-yielding vines planted on terraces and worked by hand, Le Colture’s Prosecco is made exclusively from grapes grown on the estate. This is crucial to the quality of their wines, allowing the family to maintain high standards and consistency of style.

CECILIA BERETTA Cecilia Beretta, pride of the Pasqua Family, was born at the beginning of the eighties as an agricultural company dedicated to research. The name originates from the splendid Beretta Villa, built in the seventh century in the eastern zone of the Valpolicella region, by the count Giuseppe Beretta, former mayor of the city of Verona, agronomist and rural poet. The vineyards of the company are located in the Valpolicella area and they spread across the volcanic soil of the hills surrounding Soave.

DOMINIO DE PINGUS Danish-born, Bordeaux-trained, Peter Sisseck believed that Ribera del Duero had the potential to produce Spain’s finest wines. He sought out parcels of ancient vines, on perfectly exposed terroir, which he instinctively knew would produce something exciting, albeit in small quantities. The stage was set for the arrival of Pingus – a trailblazer amazed the world from day one. Flor de Pingus, from younger vines and separate parcels followed, then Psi, Peter’s philanthropic project aimed at retaining the region’s unique old vines.

ADEGAS GALEGAS Adegas Galegas, which in English means “the Galician Winery”, was founded in 1995 by Pepe Rodriguez, also known as the father of modern Albariño and responsible for putting Galicia on the map. The winery has been championing traditional local grape varieties ever since. Located at the southern tip of the famous Rías Baixas region, almost on the Portuguese border, their sunny vineyards benefit from the Atlantic Ocean influence, yielding highly refreshing wines with a distinctive salinity.

BODEGAS ZUGOBER Bodegas Zugober winery was established in the heart of the renowned Rioja Alavesa in 1987, by viticulturist Eduardo Gomez Palma and his winemaker wife Maribel Bernardo. Originally from different wine regions, the couple brought together their respective winemaking heritage to build their dream winery and have now been joined by their son Manuel. Located on the edge of the Sierra de Cantabria mountains, this tiny, passionate family team creates characterful, classically structured wines with a sense of fruit purity and underlying freshness.

WINE & SOUL Sandra Tavares da Silva and husband Jorge Serôdio Borges combined prodigious talent and enthusiasm to produce iconic wines from the outset. They initially bought a wonderful, old port lodge and rebuilt the lagares (stone troughs). At first they purchased fruit from selected sites in the Pinhão Valley then, in 2003, bought their own, spectacular vineyard, planted with ancient, 76-year-old vines, encompassing thirty different varieties. The wines, red and white, combine impressive complexity, intensity and personality – delightfully food-friendly.

THE LANE One of the most exciting wine estates in Australia today, The Lane is the brainchild of well-known Aussie winemaker John Edwards. His dream was to create wines that champion the sunny exuberance of Aussie fruit and the classic structure and texture of the old-world winemaking regions he so admired. He found and planted vineyards high in the Adelaide Hills, whose relative cool and ancient soils are key to the style of the estates’ wines, which walk the tightrope of brightness and grace.

BAROSSA BOY Trent Burge is Barossa Boy, the sixth generation of the famous Barossa winemaking clan. From backyard to vineyard and cricket pitch, Trent grew up a country boy, tearing about the local vineyards on his bike. Trent’s deep understanding of the land plays a key role in the style of his wines. Sourcing grapes of the highest quality from specific sites, Trent crafts wines to be classically Barossa in structure and flavour profile, but with a lightness of touch that is resolutely modern.

ER ADUS Boutique, family-owned Marlborough estate Eradus Wines have twelve hectares of vineyards, the most impressive of which are planted on undulating terraces along the Awatere river valley. Closer to the ocean than much of the Marlborough wine region, the Awatere’s warm days, cool nights and dry climate are key to the luminous flavour intensity, elegant minerality and fresh acidities of Eradus’ distinctive wines. The estate is run by Michiel Eradus, whose affable, easygoing demeanour belies a fierce perfectionist in pursuit of quality and balance, the Eradus mantra.

ELEPHANT HILL A leading light of the Hawke’s Bay wine scene, Elephant Hill exists only by serendipity. On a trip to the region in 2001 to collect a British Racing Green Jaguar from a specialised mechanic, German businessman Roger Weiss and his wife Reydan fell in love with the area and resolved to build a holiday home here, only to become so enamoured of the local people and wines that they decided to join in! Elephant Hill was born in 2003 and boasts exceptional vineyards in three distinct sub-regions, as well as a smart winery. Contemporary classics, reflecting their love of the Northern Rhône and Burgundy, the wines are garnering increasing critical acclaim worldwide.

SOUTH AFRICA

OLD VINES WINE CELLARS Established 25 years ago by Irina Botha and her daughter Fran, Old Vines is South Africa’s only Women’s Empowerment Winery and today the entire winemaking process is in the hands of 16 women (and one lucky man, for good measure). Their vineyards date back more than 70 years. High on the breezy slopes surrounding Stellenbosch, their gnarled old vines produce tiny yields of exceptionally concentrated grapes. The resulting wines are highly refined Chenin Blancs, not unlike the famous Loire Valley examples.

NELSON WINE ESTATE Nelson Estate’s beautiful wines are now attracting deserved attention worldwide, but their story goes back to Alan Nelson’s childhood dream of owning a wine estate. For years Alan ran a successful law practice in Cape Town, enabling him to buy the historic property in Paarl, that he renamed Nelson Estate. Here, complex granite clay soils and cooling Atlantic breezes help promote fresh and delicate flavours in the wines. Alan’s son Daniel runs the estate and daughter Lisha, one of South Africa’s brightest rising stars, is the winemaker.

RHEBOKSKLOOF A magnificent 600-hectare property spanning two lush valleys, Rhebokskloof lies at the foot of the Paarl Mountain. Dating from 1692, this historic estate was carved up into several smaller farms in the 20th century, though recent owners have sought to reverse this. Rhebokskloof is now owned by a group of winepassionate South Africans with a vision to restore its splendid Cape Dutch buildings and extensive grounds. Their aim is to make wines that do justice to the estate’s unparalleled vineyard sites and long wine heritage.

HYDE DE VILLAINE The dawn of the new millennium saw a combined viticultural history, spanning some 400 years, come to fruition – the creation of Hyde de Villaine. This joint venture between Burgundy’s Aubert de Villaine and Californian viticulturalist Larry Hyde has resulted in extraordinary wines. These Californian wines combine a degree of the finesse, elegance and refinement, which most of us would associate with European wines, with a balance of richness and vitality afforded by the relatively cool, windy climate of the Carneros region.

CAKEBREAD CELLARS Cakebread Cellars started as a small venture whose first vintage totalled just 157 cases and now comprises over 600 acres of prime vineyards. The breadth and depth of scope of Cakebread’s sites are key not only to the balance and complexity of their wines but also their potential to age gracefully. While viticultural and winemaking expertise has become more sophisticated with time, Cakebread remain constant in their commitment to family values, and to producing wines of the highest quality, to be enjoyed with friends and food.

SUSTAINABILITY We ensure that all of our activities comply fully with relevant environmental legislation and best practice and strive for continual improvement of our environmental management procedures with the following measures:

The Company recognises that its activities have an impact on the environment: •

Wine Buying Approach – the majority of our wine producers are committed to sustainable agriculture at various levels: Lutte Raisonnée (no systemic treatments but reserve the right to treat if absolutely necessary), Organic, Certified Organic, Biodynamic and Certified Biodynamic. We encourage and support their efforts and demand evidence of certification. Environmental policy/ sustainability is one key aspect we consider when taking on new wine producers.

•

Corney & Barrow, wherever possible, seeks to appoint suppliers of works and materials who are environmentally aware and share our goals regarding reducing our environmental impact. This includes our wine suppliers and our warehousing and logistics providers.

•

We ensure that all activities comply fully with relevant environmental legislations and perceived best practice – in particular health & safety legislation (fire risk assessments, employee safe working environment and practices, pest control, hygiene etc).

•

We commission regular independent audits to confirm that the Company’s policies and procedures are appropriate and that they are being followed in practice.

•

Over the last 10 years, Corney & Barrow has significantly reduced the percentage of staff with company cars and staff are required to use public transport as far as possible.

•

We strive to use resources wisely and place emphasis on re-using or recycling materials wherever possible, including out-of-date promotional material and wine lists.

For example: toner cartridges (photocopiers, faxes, printers) are re-cycled for the benefit of the Tommy’s Charity. They are collected by Anglia Forwarding Ltd who are certified by The Environment Agency under the Control of Pollution (Amendment) Act 1989 and re-cycled by Environmental Business Products Ltd. Glass bottles are re-cycled by Greener World. Used postage stamps are saved for the Hearing Dogs for the Deaf Charity. IT and media technology items are disposed of/re-cycled as appropriate via Secure IT Re-Cycling Ltd (which supports The World Land Trust). •

Corney & Barrow has introduced a robust email marketing strategy in order to accustom our customers to receiving offers and communication via digital communication rather than printed post. We are aiming to make digital our primary channel for advertising to minimise the impact of print related advertising. 69

VIÑA LAURENT After 12 years in Bordeaux looking after their family estate, Frenchman Damien Laurent and his Chilean wife Lorena decided to return to Chile to set up their own winery. Based in the Maipo, they own just over two hectares of vineyard. They also work with a few small, independent growers in the southern regions of Maule and Itata, to source special parcels of grapes. These include heritage Pais vines, some over 150 years old. Damien and Lorena use only the healthiest grapes and minimise handling, to preserve natural freshness and fruit purity.

CHILE

CHILE

LA RONCIÈRE La Roncière was founded in 1949, but only much later in 2017 did the brothers – José Antonio, Andres and Alejandro Orueta – conceive of Idahue Estate. This pioneering project, undertaken in awareness of climate change, is the only estate located in Licantén, a cool, coastal sub-region of the Curicó Valley. Due to its unique microclimate and ancient metamorphic soil, Licantén has been recognised as a new D.O, one of only four in Chile. Its 200 hectares of vines yield fresh, classically-structured, high quality reds from classic French varieties.

VIÑA NAHUEL Viña Nahuel, named after the native Andean puma, is a personal venture for Swiss Daniel Wiederkehr, a former financier who long dreamt of making his own wines. In 2010, Daniel fell in love with Chile, buying six hectares in the Colchagua Valley to set up his estate, where he farms 80-year-old bush vines organically and according to the phases of the moon. Wiederkehr’s wines combine European classicism borne of his Swiss oenological training, with the Chilean character of his newly adopted homeland.

VIÑA ARBOLEDA Viña Arboleda is the personal venture of Eduardo Chadwick, a name well-known to many Chilean wine lovers. Arboleda means ‘grove of trees’ and is a tribute to more than 3500 acres of native forest that surround the estate’s vineyards in the Aconcagua Valley. Eduardo’s vision for Arboleda is to craft single vineyard wines that reveal the purest expression of each unique terroir. Elegance is the watchword here, borne of the Aconcagua Valley’s diverse sites and the influences of cool mountain air and oceanic breezes.

MATUR ANA WINES Like many others, José Ignacio and brother Sebastian Maturana saw their family home and vineyards destroyed by Chile’s major earthquake in 2010. He was forced to rebuild his business, choosing to focus on premium wine production. Winemaker José travelled to Burgundy in 2011, to understand from within how small producers were traditionally making high-end wines. Back in Chile, he and Sebastian founded Maturana Wines, working with vines of at least 70 years old, by hand and organically. The aim is to produce unique wines with a sense of place, expressing their native origins.

MASSOC FRÈRES Massoc Frères was established in 2015 by French brothers François and Jean-Paul Massoc, aiming to revive the heritage grapes of Chile’s remote Maule, Itata and Bio-Bio regions. They work directly with small traditional vine growers in these areas, who have been tending the so-called ‘criolla’ grapes (first planted by the Spanish colonisers) for generations. ‘Wines with humanity’ is their adopted motto, underlining the absolute value of human input in the process of wine production, from the growers in the vineyards to the winemakers in the cellar.

BODEGA RUCA MALEN Bodega Ruca Malen is a boutique winery based in the foothills of the Andes, in Mendoza. Founded in 1998 by two French pioneers who brought their rich Burgundian experience and Ruca Malen’s driving philosophy: to create ‘terroir’ wines of great finesse. The unique range of microclimates, combined with high altitude, luminous sunshine and cooler nights, yield concentrated grapes with a sense of freshness. Rising star winemaker Noelia Torres recently joined the ranks, bringing her personality and feminine grace to the wines.

MENDOZA VINEYARDS Founded in 2003, Mendoza Vineyards is an exciting project based in Luján de Cuyo, the heart of Mendoza’s wine country. The winery works with 50 qualityminded local growers with some of the best vineyard sites across the Andes, in addition to fruit from their own, old, low-yielding vines. Meticulous in every aspect of their operation, the small dedicated team, led by the appropriately named chief winemaker Richard Bonvin- produces beautifully balanced wines with impressive varietal purity and typicity of terroir.

ACHAVAL-FERRER The ambition at Achaval Ferrer has always been decisive and bold. The aim was to produce a worldclass wine in Argentina, in high altitude Mendoza. If third party assessment is reliable, this they have achieved The wines of Achaval-Ferrer come from excruciatingly low-yielding, high altitude sites and from ancient, un-grafted vines. The goal is simple - absolute quality, a very pure expression of Malbec, the perfect blend in Quimera, all the while ensuring vibrancy and freshness – remarkable focus.

VIÑAS QUEIROLO Of Italian origin, the Queirolo family sailed for Peru in the late 1800s and have been producing local wine and Pisco in Lima since 1880. In 2000, the latest generation of the family decided to invest more heavily in their wine business, employing French consultants with a view to creating wines of international quality. French-imported vines were planted in sites of outstanding potential in the Ica Valley, while the winery was revamped, incorporating state-of-the-art kit, to adopt modern winemaking techniques. In 2007, Intipalka – or ‘valley of the sun’ in native Quechua – was born, a range of wines with a distinct Peruvian wine style, combining the best of New and Old worlds.
