THE 2019 VINTAGE: VASTER THAN THE EMPIRE An intense, Byronic vintage, forged in the summer heat.

Born in Guadaloupe and educated at the University of Bordeaux, Alexis ‘Saint-John’ Perse was a French diplomat who won the 1960 Nobel Prize for Literature.

This multifaceted son of the French empire wrote the line above in an abandoned Taoist temple near Beijing. Édouard and Christian Moueix’s choice of quote for this year’s tasting brochure acknowledges the warm, sunny summer months as the key to the 2019 vintage, but also places us in a global context. As recent events show, whether virus or civil unrest, we are all connected now, for better or worse. In the same way, the success of this crop depends on factors stretching far beyond the corner of south west France from where it comes.

2019 is a vintage of substance. It has no shortage of tannin, but – and this is crucial to the success of the Moueix properties this year – that tannin has been managed sublimely, extracted so sensitively, that only after tasting several samples do you realise the build-up

in your mouth. What is more, the fruit density and its succulence in combination with fresh acidity, make for truly harmonious wines.

After a mild winter, spring was by turns sunny and rainy.

Having dodged frost on 13th April, it was the rain in early June that first left a stamp on the vintage. Flowering suffered as a result and Merlot bunches averaged just 120 grapes (compared to the usual 200). It was to be a loweryielding year.

The summer once again dealt a blow to climate change deniers, proving exceptionally sunny and warm, only just falling short of 2018’s historic record for sunshine hours. 2019 can be seen as a continuation of the modern line of sun-forged vintages. However, unlike years such as 2015 and 2009, which are defined by their lush fruit, 2019 seems to have more in common with the phenolic richness of 2018, 2010 and, for those with longer memories, 2005.

On the fast draining gravel plateau of Pomerol, hydric stress set in as early as mid-July. Saint-Émilion held out better thanks to its retentive limestone soils. Fortunately, some 3.5cm of gentle rain on 26th July came to the rescue, inducing a quick and even véraison (colour change).

In Édouard Moueix’s words, “this moment marked the qualitative turn of the vintage.”

At the end of August, Merlot berries weighed 1.2g on average (versus 1.5g in a ‘normal’ vintage), indicating “exceptional concentration but low yields”. Volumes harvested were 20% below average in Pomerol and 10% below in Saint-Émilion. Harvest took place under fair skies, from 17th September to 3rd October.

And so what of the wines? There are vintages that seduce from the off, before they are even bottled. This is not one of those years. It is more elemental, with something of the Byronic hero about it, brooding and iconoclastic yet capable of profound expression – a visceral vintage, whose raw materials are truly impressive, but which demands patience.

The 2019s will come into their own during the course of their maturation, or élevage, that deeply French term for breeding, rearing or schooling, which also evokes a process of learning to live. 2019 is a vintage where a deft hand in the cellar can make all the difference. I can think of no better school for the ferociously talented class of 2019 than Établissements Jean-Pierre Moueix.

Château Barrail du Blanc

Another bullseye from the beloved “Barry White”, a tiny 7 hectare (17 acres) vineyard situated in Saint-Sulpice de Faleyrens, but in the gravel and clay rather than pure sand part which gives this wine a subtle density. Opaque ruby in colour, a delectable nose of bright red fruits, super plump and ripe. The palate is sweet and juicy, supple and chunky with a higher Merlot (89%) content perhaps giving this a fatter, more approachable style. Very good indeed.

This is the second vintage offered under Moueix ownership, of this jewel-like ancient vineyard that lies immediately below the old 1st Growth Château Magdelaine and therefore neighbours the profoundly great BélairMonange. Just 2.3 hectares (5.6 acres) in size, C&B is proud to have the largest – the word is relative – allocation in the UK. Deepest ruby colour. The nose shows high toned red and black fruits with that delectable Cabernet Franc leafy perfume, but the palate is more sonorous, firmly but amply structured, subtly sweet and dense, beautifully extracted and long to the finish.

Sophie Fourcade is an old friend with whom we have been working with since 1987 (with a slight break in 1997 when we shared different views on pricing!) It is a joy to rekindle the relationship – again a C&B exclusivity – with the vineyard, all 1.3 hectares (3 acres) of it, now perfectly aged and of course beautifully sited between the 1st Growths Grand Cru Beau-Séjour Bécot and Beauséjour Duffau Lagarrosse with the tinkling bells of a third 1st Growth Château Angélus somewhat further down on the plains.

I have said this before but it is worth remembering that in the 19th and deep into the 20th century this was SaintÉmilion’s greatest property. The ambition of Édouard Moueix, whose family home it is, is to bring back that reputation and 2019 is undoubtedly another step towards that objective. I actually scored it fractionally higher than both 2018 and 2016.

Profound colour of deepest ruby. The nose is high toned and spicy, strawberry fruited at first then a denser, more muscular, meaty perfume. The palate is sweetly structured, dense again, with a briary, chewy concentration, a touch of oak and significant length.

Since 2015, a beautiful 4 hectare (9.9 acres) plot of La Fleur-Pétrus has been incorporated into this historic property which remains very small at just 9 hectares.

Here the soil is gravel on clay which, with its 100% Merlot content, gives the wine a fabulous, sexy density, no more so than in 2019.

This neighbour of Château Nenin and Château La Pointe has a profound ruby colour. Its cassis-led, toasty nose is enriched by dark earthy aromas and shows an extra level of elegance this year. Suave dark cherry fruit and liquorice make for a sleek, sweetly fruited palate, framed by firm tannins. Lovely wine.

Opaque, almost black ruby colour. The nose is fat – if one can say that – with super plump creamy black and red fruits, that sexy density, with rich but fresh extraction and delectable length. Super wine and an absolute snip.

Château La Grave

In our debriefing meeting with Edouard Moueix last week we collectively came to the conclusion that there is no better Pomerol at this price available on the market. It is stunning value but more importantly stunning quality with a beautiful gravel and fine clay soil and a perfectly managed vineyard of just 8 hectares (19.5 acres). Acquired by Christian Moueix in 1971, it is a jewel.

As I have said before, I cannot think of a greater contrast to Château La Grave than brooding Bourgneuf, situated on the slope of the Pomerol plateau and very close to Trotanoy itself, with whom it shares some of that gravel– clay soil. Opaque ruby colour. The nose is inky-dark, bitter cherries and a dash of sweet spice. The palate is sweet on the entry then firmly built, its concentrated forest fruits currently framed by powerful oak tannins. A forceful, ambitious Bourgneuf.

Opaque ruby. Delectable nose of summer pudding and cream, fresh, sweetly plump. The palate is even more profound, beautifully extracted, with well cloaked tannins that make the sensual power deep without being coarse, and with a full chocolatey finish. This is quite simply delectable.

Château Latour à Pomerol

Château Certan de May

Latour is one of the hidden legends of Pomerol, acquired

by Madame Loubat (who also owned Petrus) in 1917 and made by Ets. JP Moueix since 1962. It is tiny, just 8 hectares (19.5 acres), with both clay and deep gravel soils that offer power and refinement. So beautiful was the Merlot in 2019 that this is, uniquely, a 100% Merlot wine and brilliant it is too.

This vineyard is of course sited on Pomerol’s famous central plateau and is the immediate neighbour of Vieux Château Certan. It is distinctive for many reasons, not least its relatively high levels of Cabernet Franc (30%) and Cabernet Sauvignon (5%) in support of the Merlot and the fact that the legendary Jean-Claude Berrouet – Olivier’s father – is the consultant wine maker.

Deepest ruby, opaque indeed. The nose is arterially dark, with profound red fruits, very pure, almost pointed in their freshness and intensity. The palate is effortlessly balanced with a beautifully cloaked structure, a dark but subtle concentration and a sweet, sustained finish.

At just 5.5 hectares (13.5 acres) and lying on the famous clay-gravel soil, the 2019 possess that distinctively perfumed wild red fruit noise, spicy and arterial. The palate is seductive, creamy, almost debauched with a chewy concentration, excellent extraction and super length. How lovely to see this great estate returning to top distinctive form.

Château Hosanna Pomerol

Close neighbour to Certan de May and Vieux Château Certan, this is the glorious remnant of the old Certan Giraud vineyard, the heart of which, on blue clay and red gravel soil was retained by the Moueix family to produce arguably the most tender and delectable of all their wines. It is a triumph in 2019.

Opaque, black, ruby colour. The nose is creamily rich and darkly fruited with hints of coffee. The palate is silky and dense, sweetly flavoured, with a supple, sensual concentration, effortlessly ripe and with a lovely burst of freshness on the finish. Super wine.

Some of the most beautiful deep bedded gravel soil on an iron rich sub-soil form the heart of this legendary property, deployed to super effect in 2019.

Last year I referred to Trotanoy 2018 as “Majestic”.

Rather weirdly I wrote the same thing about the 2019 so perhaps, in the interest of differentiation, I should substitute “Ducal” without in any way detracting from a wonderful wine. We always offer this wine separately of course, but, given the surreal nature of this campaign, we felt that an early inclusion of the tasting note here would be beneficial for a wine that invariably sells out… offer to follow.

Intense ruby colour. This is stylishly suave and elegant on the nose with layered, minty red fruits, really vinous.

The palate is both fresh and sensual, amply structured but with bright berry fruit and an almost chocolate richness but with a lovely freshness on the finish.

Corney & Barrow Score 17 - 17.5 Recommended drinking from 2026 - 2031+

Opaque, ruby colour. The nose is brooding, darkly fruited, briary, with a densely ripe, concentrated red fruit perfume. The palate is profoundly concentrated as well but with a supple, cloaked structure and flavours that balloon across the palate. What is wonderful about this wine – and this is rare for Trotanoy at such an early stage – is the “heart on sleeve” sensitively extracted power before a finish that is profound and long. Very Ducal, very great.
