Five Torpoint Ferry workers have been praised for their quick action and professionalism after saving a woman from drowning in the Tamar River.

The ferry crew, made up of Stewart Trumper, Stephen Halls, Paul Barnfield, Shane Gomery and Tina Yates, were awarded a Chief Superintendent’s Commendation by Devon & Cornwall Police after a female passenger jumped overboard in an attempted suicide and was swept away by the current. The incident happened on Monday 16 June and due to the quick thinking and excellent teamwork displayed by the staff, the woman was recovered from the water unharmed, along with a Royal Marine who had gone into the water to try and save her. The team attended a special ceremony at Crownhill Police Station, Plymouth on Thursday 31 July to collect

Emma pictured with her mum Elaine

A young woman from Torpoint is facing a frustrating wait to hear if a life-changing operation will be funded by the NHS. Emma Walton, 23, has cerebral palsy which has affected the muscles in her thighs, legs and feet - making walking difficult and tiring. Walking distances, managing steps and kerbs are all challenging as is wet weather which can pose more dangers for Emma. But her life could be transformed with an operation called selective dorsal rhizotomy - a complex neurological procedure which treats the nerve roots affected by the cerebral palsy. Although this operation has been carried out for many years on children and adults in America, it is relatively new to the UK and only offered to children up to the age of 10. Emma’s consultant at Frenchay Hospital in Bristol is confident that the operation - costing around £25,000 - would benefit Emma greatly, but is not optimistic about funding from the NHS. Emma’s parents Elaine and Frank run the Top Shop chippy in Torpoint and they have been in regular contact with the consultant to establish if funding might be forthcoming. Elaine said: “As far as funding goes we have absolutely no idea what is going on and why it is taking so long. Even though they thought we had no chance of getting the funding they still submitted a funding request. It has been well over a year now and we still have heard nothing.” In the meantime the Waltons have put a poster in their chip shop highlighting Emma’s dilemma - and over £2,000 has been raised as a result. They have also been saving hard to save funds should the NHS turn down the application. Elaine said: “As parents we want the best for our children and this operation could really change Emma’s life. It is hard for her to walk, affects the way she feels about herself and makes it difficult for her to get employment as a disabled person. “The problem she faces in later life can all be greatly improved by having this operation.” The family only took over the fish and chip shop three years ago, having moved down from Bradford. Elaine said: “We have been overwhelmed with the support we have received. People of all ages have been so generous in wanting to help Emma. “At the end of the day if the NHS don’t fund the operation we will have to borrow the money for the operation. It’s the least we can do for Emma.” Even after the operation Emma will face a long to deal with a few incidents where period of rehabilitation and physiotherapy. casualties suffered the effects of heat In the meantime she continues to look for exhaustion, both on the beaches and employment. Launch of ‘Respect the Water’ campaign By Maggie Cardew (Rame Peninsula Branch RNLI)

RAME PENINSULA BRANCH RNLI Coastal fatality figures released in July revealed that 32 people accidentally lost their lives on the south west coast last year. The number of near-misses was even higher, with 87 lives being saved by the RNLI’s south west lifeboat crews and lifeguards. In July the RNLI launched a major drowning awareness campaign, ‘Respect the Water’ warning people to stay safe at the beach and on the water. Over the past four years, a total of 130 people have died on the south west coast. The figures show a clear gender divide, with adult men accounting for 60 per cent of south west coastal deaths over this time. Many would assume adrenaline sports and rough weather are the biggest causes of incidents but, in fact, it’s casual, every day use of the coast and sea which often results in fatalities. RNLI volunteer crews and lifeguards in Cornwall have been very busy during August - Penlee lifeboat being diverted from a fireworks display to search for an overdue yacht and Fowey’s inshore lifeboat launching to reports of a boat in danger of being washed onto rocks. Challenging conditions at Polzeath with spring tides combining with strong onshore winds and large swells, meant it was too dangerous for RNLI lifeguards to end their patrol at the usual time, and on one particular evening, lifeguards assisted 32 people who had fallen off the bank of sand and straight into the path of a rip current. Only days later the same team saved the lives of two women and their children during similar extreme conditions in the high spring tides. Closer to home, Paul Gunning, the local RNLI Lifeguard supervisor told me about patrols at Whitsand Bay during August: “Peak Season started well with the beaches busy, as many people enjoyed the unbroken sunny weather. This in turn brought its own problems, and the lifeguards had

The annual meeting of the Friends of Thanckes Park is taking place on Wednesday September 24 at 7pm in the Committee Room of the Council Chambers in Torpoint. The Friends work to further the social, economic and environmental benefit of Thanckes Park (The Lawn) to the public. All members are invited to attend and residents can join on the night if not already a member. There are no subscription fees and membership is free. Nominations for the management committee are welcomed but must be received no later than a week before the meeting. Encouraged by Cornwall Council, the Friends of Thanckes formed in 2009 to secure large funding to conserve, renovate and redevelop the Lawn. Following public consultation, funds were sought from the Heritage Lottery Fund (HLF) to create a conservation action plan which, when created, would form the basis for a large project to be funded by Parks for People. Despite initial positive responses from HLF and months of hard work, the application for funds was turned down at the last minute. Even though funds are in short supply, the Friends have had significant success. Much of the Lawn is now a Queen Elizabeth II Field in Trust, protected against developers and must remain for recreational use for all time. The Lawn now has a conservation assessment

and action plan. There is a marquee available for use during events at the park. The Friends have acted as a nucleus around which those interested in the future of the park can meet. The Friends want to increase involvement of local people and increase the park’s profile. New members are always welcome and can join online at www.friendsofthanckespark.org.uk, by email to fotp@friendsofthanckespark.org.uk, by post to Friends of Thanckes Park, Room 10, Council Chambers, York Road, Torpoint PL11 2LG, or at the annual meeting. Nominations for the management committee can be sent by email or by post.

Charity concert is a huge success

It’s lovely to be asked to be part of the happy couple’s very special day because our church sees it as our calling to welcome people to church in the name of Christ. It’s also a big responsibility. I have to make sure I get the words right, although I have a Registrar watching over me to make sure I don’t leave anything out or call people by the wrong name! And the responsibility starts long before that. Making sure we have an organist, that the orders of service have the right hymns, that the church is clean and warm and that the flower lady has the right keys. My last responsibility is to rush to the reception with what has been left behind - and there’s always something. We’ve had the usual scarves, glasses, even handbags and, believe it or not, crutches! How did that poor soul not notice that they couldn’t walk properly? And we never did find the owner of those. But then the responsibility shifts to the bride and groom - the responsibility they each have toward the other of caring and sharing in their new life together and of each really becoming ‘the other half’. In marriage you expect to have friends and family around through good times and bad but, for the Christian, there is always another source of help and that is, of course, God our heavenly Father, to whom we turn automatically whenever we have a need or feel the urge to praise. God is always present at the wedding, watching as two of His precious children make their promises to each other and to Him and He will be there for them, too, as they go through their new life together. In marriage, as in all aspects of our life, we are called upon to keep the promises we make. We often break them but we can be thankful that God’s promises to us will never be broken.

The large and enthusiastic audience gave a resounding standing ovation to the Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir at the end of an amazing performance given by the choir under the direction of multi-talented Jonathan Delbridge and equally talented Elizabeth Sidebotham. The choir delighted the audience with songs from shows and musicals and well known populars like Bohemian Rhapsody and Rhythm of Life. In the second half of the concert the audience joined the choir in community singing of well-known First World War songs. The choir was supported by the outstanding performance of 13-yearold Sehyogue Aulakh who thrilled the audience playing piano and the Marimba. Sehyogue has a bright future ahead of her and has many awards to her name including the Plymouth Music Zone Nick Thomas memorial award for outstanding achievement. Also in the programme was the St Dominic hand bell ringers who thrilled the audience with their mellow and harmonious bell sounds with a varied and skilful presentation of tunes including Danny Boy and a medley of famous Cornish songs. The finale of the concert concluded with the choir singing Morte Christi, conducted by deputy musical director of the choir Norman Nethercott, with Jonathan Delbridge on the organ; followed by community singing of the Cornish Anthem Trelawney. Both the finale songs included male voice singers from the audience which was warmly welcomed. The captivated audience gave a long standing ovation to the choir and performers. Proceeds from the concert benefited the Sue Hooper Charitable Foundation set up by Sue Hooper, who chaired the concert in 2000 in aid and support of the education and promotion of music, drama and the performing arts. The Rame Peninsula Male Voice Choir, based in Kingsand, would welcome new male singers. They meet every Wednesday evening at the Village Hall at Kingsand at 7.30 – 9.30pm

FROM THE MAYOR’S PARLOUR I am sad to report the passing of Ron Widdecombe in August. Ron was Mayor of Torpoint times and also a Caradon councillor. Ron was the first Town Mayor in 1974 when the council became a district council and the role of chairman became Town Mayor. Ron was a wealth of knowledge for the town and always helpful to the residents and the younger and new members of the council. Our thoughts go out to his family. Torpoint Police have made several appeals on their Facebook page (Torpoint Police) asking the public to take measures to secure their own property, both in their homes and in their vehicles. They have lost count of the number of vehicles and indeed houses which have been targeted by opportunist thieves and it transpires that either the vehicle or the house was not secured correctly and property including money was left on display. They would also like to remind people to secure their homes by locking doors whilst they are in their property or out in their gardens during daytime hours. Property identification packs are available from the Neighbourhood Watch Team at Torpoint Police Station open Monday, Wednesday and Friday from 9.30am to 12.30pm, 01752 817858. If you see anybody acting suspiciously around vehicles please call 999 if you suspect that a crime is in progress. If you have any information about any of these thefts, or any other crime, please get in touch as soon as possible on the non-emergency police telephone number 101.

She has done a lot over the years both locally and countywide for the organisation and the region is rewarding her. Congratulations Chris and thank you for all you do for the town. South East Cornwall’s Oliver Smart son of Ian Smart of Torpoint Community College has returned from the European Biathlon Championships and World Cup Tour in Setubal, Portugal with a gold and silver medal. Oliver, 11, who attends Plymouth College Preparatory School was one of the youngest competitors in a field of 18 with representatives from countries including Italy, Spain, Switzerland, Portugal and Russia, and won a silver medal in the individual Youth D category and gold in the team competition. This follows a successful last 12 months in which Oliver has become the GB Modern Biathlon champion and runner up in the British Schools Modern Biathlon Championships. Outstanding GCSE results for ‘inspired’ students from Torpoint Inspired students at Torpoint Community College have achieved the highest results in the history of the college with a significant improvement in the number of students attaining the highest grades of A* and A in many subjects and especially in maths, with a remarkable 20 per cent leap in three years. This significant improvement across the college is a reflection of both each and every inspired individual learner and the hard working members of staff. The college is looking forward to welcoming a significant number of these students into the hugely successful sixth form at the college which again this year also celebrates excellent results and sees every student move successfully to their next steps. At this early stage of examination analysis, with several results yet to come in and the sudden changes to Examinations and GCSEs, although anticipated to further increase, more than 60 per cent of students gained a

minimum of five or more GCSEs grades A* - C including English and maths using similar measures as last year; this being the highest results yet in the history of the college and is reflecting its continued improved results for the third year running. Over 97 per cent of students gained at least one A*- C grades. There has been a significant increase in the numbers of students gaining 9, 10 or more at the highest levels of A* - B grades. However, to mention a few are the achievements of some of the students starting with the outstanding Lucy Haggerty who achieved an amazing ten A* grades and a distinction, Alice Varley who achieved 4 A*, 4 A, 1 grade B, one distinction, one distinction star and one double merit. Chloe Roberts achieved 4 A*, 5 A, one grade B and one distinction. Also worth noting are the girls listed below who between them achieved a grand total of 5 A* grades, 18 A

grades, 6 B grades, 1 grade C and 2 distinctions. Well done to Hannah Byrne, Megan Roberts and Aimee Hannaford. The achievement of all individuals will be celebrated at a special awards ceremony in December when students collect their examination certificates. It was clear that the class of 2014 was a very special group, rising to every challenge and imposed change as dictated by the Department for Education. The college is immensely proud to be a fully inclusive college and students at the college on vocational programmes also did exceptionally well achieving distinctions and merits from their BTEC and ASDAN courses. Andrea Hazeldine, headteacher at the college said: “All the staff and governors at the college are extremely proud of our students’ achievements and are looking forward to supporting them over the next few years. Well done.”

more students from Cornwall to progress into higher education and into employment. This scheme was designed in response to an identified need, where fewer students from Cornwall progress into higher education compared with national averages in addition to addressing clear skills gaps. The programme will provide undergraduates with vital work experience and networking opportunities with local

businesses, enabling them to make connections that can lead to careers, long before graduation. Brighter Cornwall complements the existing offer for graduates and will also help to encourage the higher level skills required for economic growth back into the county. Students need to sign up and log their contact details for more information on the opportunities available to

them. Please take a look at www.brightercornwall.org.uk to find out more about Brighter Cornwall. Torpoint Mayor Mike Pearn, in supporting the initiative, said: “We would like your help to promote sign up to the programme by both students and local businesses that may be willing to offer an undergraduate a work placement as part of the scheme.”

Bowen Technique…. Changing the face of bodywork as we know it.

The 100th anniversary of the start of hostilities in the First World War has been marked during HMS Raleigh’s final passingout-parade of the summer term. The parade marked the successful completion of training for the recruits of Cornwell Division, the training division named in honour of a World War 1 hero, Boy Seaman John ‘Travers’ Cornwell VC. Standard bearers from the Royal British Legion were invited to take part in the ceremony which also included prayers, a recital of the ‘Ode of Remembrance’ and the last post.

WILCOVE

At a time when many global communities and humanitarian aid agencies are dealing with human suffering due to conflict, disease and poverty it is heartwarming to hear of inspirational work that is being undertaken by Save the Children both at home and abroad. In July the ladies of Wilcove WI were pleased to host Save the Children ambassador and volunteer fundraiser Chris Wiseman. Involvement with Save the Children has been very much a family affair with Chris following in the footsteps of her mother and joining the organisation many decades ago whilst still in her teens. During her talk Chris highlighted that Save the Children operates in over 120 countries and last year alone used 89p from every £1 raised to improve the lives of some 10 million children. With one of the organisation’s key messages being ‘No child born to die’ this agency focuses on tackling wide-ranging issues affecting the wellbeing of childen globally ie: conflict, displacement, poverty, hunger, health, education and safety (childprotection). One of the most surprising comments that Chris made was that Save the Children spend more money in the UK than any other country in dealing with issues surrounding child poverty and are currently working hard to improve the lives of UK children through various grant-aid and parenting/ education schemes. Chris also focused on a visit she made to Bangladesh where 1 in 24 babies die before their

first birthday and 1 in 19 before their fifth birthday but where there is clear indication that these figures can be reduced by 50 per cent as the women within these communities gain greater access to the family planning services and child and maternal health schemes. The ‘take home message’ Chris left the ladies of the Wilcove WI with was that the work of Save the Children (www.savethechildren.org.uk) is as critical today as it was when founded some 100 years ago. Our sincere thanks to Chris for her talk and ongoing commitment to this amazing organisation. The speaker for Tuesday September 16 is the very elegant thespian and producer Angela Collins who will bring tales of life behind the scenes in the theatre. Wilcove WI meets at 7.30pm on the third Tuesday of the month in Wilcove Village Hall and welcomes both visitors and new members.
