SENIOR LEADERSHIP

Welcome Back I hope you found some time to rest and relax over the Christmas and New Year holiday period. I am also sure like me, that during the last month, you have sought answers to a range of questions as we have continued to collectively respond to the ebb and flow of the COVID-19 pandemic. Although there will be some creative navigating required at the beginning of the school year, I am both hopeful and optimistic that we will find a way to have a productive and successful 2022.

Education is universally recognised as a critical element to the health and prosperity of individuals, communities and cultures.

Outcomes such as students understanding and building confidence and capacity to influence their world, fulfilling dreams and aspirations, making a fairer world and enabling human progress are just a few of the reasons provided for the importance of education.

Whilst learning a collection of facts and knowledge that can be applied to the real world is of importance, you can never underestimate the power of asking questions more than merely finding answers.

The author of A More Beautiful Question, Warren Berger, suggests that between the ages of 2 and 5, children ask an average of 40,000 questions and that over the following years, as children begin school, the number of questions they ask declines. Other research hypotheses that as students move into Middle School and beyond the reduction in asking questioning, and at its heart, curiosity, has a significant influence on engagement and ultimately the depth and quality of learning. A drive for simply having the answer can be very counterproductive to the overall development of students.

Good questions have a range of benefits, such as: • Greater curiosity and engagement • Enhanced open mindedness • Varied and creative solutions • Even better questions 2

It is important that schools provide a ‘safe and valued’ environment and multiple ‘curious and engaged’ opportunities for students to ask questions. At Cornerstone, staff know the importance of enabling students to develop the knowledge and skills to find answers whilst always looking to engage in quality questioning as a central element to drive and enhance student learning.

Parents/caregivers also play a critical role in modelling and interacting in discussions where questions are central to contemplations, options and possibilities. I also encourage parents/caregivers to continue to ask more than ‘How was your day?’ as you share the learning journey of your child/ren at Cornerstone.

At another level, questions can also help to build, strengthen and sustain the relationship you have with your child/ren. You may even like to stretch yourself a little and try asking some of the questions from the following link as part of your discussions with your child/ren: https://www.care.com/c/stories/778/100-questions-to-get-toknow-your-teenager/en-au/ Perhaps it is fitting that for the first time, the College’s annual spiritual theme is encapsulated in a symbol rather than a word or phrase. This year’s spiritual theme is “?”. During the year, Pastor Al and Chaplain Andy will detail and unpack the importance of questions in reflecting upon and responding to God’s story in and through our lives.

New Beginnings!

Can you remember back to your first day of high school?

I have vague memories of 29 January 1996, my first day of Year 8 at high school, at none other than...Cornerstone College. I know! I can’t get away from the place! What can I remember of that first day?

Mainly, I can remember the feelings I was experiencing as I walked up those familiar steps near the roundabout. I was extremely nervous at having to go to this new school, one which to me seemed outrageously big! I was a bit scared of the new teachers and worried that they were going to be very strict. This was high school after all, when things got serious! I also remember thinking that it was a certainty that I would get lost. That realisation only increased my anxiety. I am sure these feelings are very normal in this situation, but still they weren’t all that fun at the time.

We have recently welcomed over 150 new students to the College who were most likely experiencing many similar feelings to varying degrees. As a College, we know that helping students feel comfortable in their new school is important for their overall wellbeing.

They need to feel a sense of belonging, and this begins with relationships. Cornerstone teachers show tremendous care and love towards all new students to help put any fears or concerns at ease as quickly as possible, and to make sure they know they are an important member of our community.

Our Year 7 teachers consider the first day the most important of the year and are wonderful at beginning to build relationships right from the start. On this first day, students learn the ‘ins and outs’ of Cornerstone. They are shown around the College, they get to know the other students in their Core class, they organise their books and lockers and trays, they meet their House Leaders, they find their Home Group rooms, but most importantly they begin to get to know their Core teachers, who will play such an important role in their first year at Cornerstone.

Day 1 at a school is full of nervousness and excitement, fears and hopes, and the beginning of new meaningful relationships.

We look forward to watching all our new students grow and love and learn this year.

A Spiritual Theme for 2022 In 2022 the College will adopt the question mark as our spiritual theme. The ‘question mark’ is the grammatical symbol added to the end of any question being asked in a text.

The symbol itself, in text and out of text, evokes an immediate sense of the unknown, and all the things that humans don’t fully know or understand. The symbol represents any gap we may have in our knowledge, but also serves as the catalyst for filling the same gap. It is our questions in our learning journeys that lead us toward greater knowing.

As we begin a new year with a spiritual theme based around this particular theme, we acknowledge the centrality of the question mark in the growing relationship between our students and Christ.

Jesus himself asked no less than 307 questions in the Gospels, as a way to encourage people to grow in their appreciation of who he was, why he came, what he was supposed to do, and how it would be the very thing to initiate a new way of living, relating, loving and knowing.

Human wonder can be considered a very abstract concept.

It will become more tangible through our probing and investigating of all things physical and spiritual, as we learn to articulate all our wonders in the form of questions.

The question mark, for Jesus, was not a symbol of cynicism or judgment, but a wisdom-filled gateway to a kingdom of hopefulness that is God’s answer to questions of existence, life, humanity, meaning and God.

When it comes to faith it will always be the questions of both heart and mind that keep the things we believe alive and authentic. Every faith journey is filled with uncertainty and doubt, not the least for those who have not yet been brought to faith.

WELLBEING

“Breathe Deeply, Exhale Gently” These words are a timely reminder to go slowly and gently when the start of this year has presented multiple challenges to parents/caregivers and students alike.

Abrupt disturbances to daily life, schooling and working, social isolation, the unknown and uncertainty has put significant pressure and stress on families. Normal support resources and opportunities have reduced due to isolation or illness. In Australia, mental health issues have more than doubled since the start of the pandemic in 2020, and what has followed is the widespread deterioration of public mental health.

It is worth noting that despite untold pressures, studies have shown that people are also experiencing positive reactions such as focus on family, gratitude for what they have, appreciation of life, and deeper interpersonal relationships. Other areas of growth are learning to deal with uncertainty, and learning not to be bothered by small hassles. Studies also report individuals reporting more compassion for others, acts of kindness and savouring special moments.

Prioritising Your Own Wellbeing In terms of helping young people navigate their many different feelings at the start of this school year, particularly those who have been learning online, parent/caregivers play a significant role in their young person’s lives.

In times of uncertainty and change, young people look to the adults in their lives. So how do we, as parents/ caregivers, continue to support our children in amongst our own challenges. There is no prescription, but there is always conversation and communication. Asking questions, listening deeply when family members or friends talk to us, and noticing when they don’t. Following up with people in our lives who have suddenly gone quiet. Maintaining a connection with the people who matter to us most. Having the courage to tell someone that we need help. Seek help. Follow through with a friend’s invitation to catch up. See a health professional or alternative.

Make uninterrupted time for your loved ones.

Make uninterrupted time for yourself. Switch off from social media. Practice relaxation or mindfulness to soothe your mind and body. Give yourself the same kindness, care and compassion you would to others. Notice the things and people you are grateful for.

Helping Navigate Young People’s Return to School Young people will experience a full range of different emotions, thoughts and reactions at the start of this year. This is normal and expected. Helping them establish routines and patterns will help buffer against challenging times.

You may want to remind them not to take on too much or sign up for too much in the beginning of the year to prevent feelings of quickly becoming overwhelmed. Help your child identify how they’re feeling, as irritability, frustration, and sadness while usual adolescent emotions can escalate into something bigger when there is added complexity to their lives.

Let your child know that you want to understand them and support them. Lastly, a nutritious breakfast in the morning is important in setting them up cognitively and emotionally for the day ahead.

A Note on Protective Factors ‘Protective factors’ for student wellbeing buffer against stress and adversity in times of uncertainty and change. Protective factors include strong and positive relationships and connection with others, having a supportive environment around you, having a sense of belonging and a sense of community to name a few. Protective factors buffer against risk factors.

School is an anchor for students, a place where predictable routines provide structure, normalcy, belonging, meaning and purpose. Parent/caregivers and staff relationships and communication is now more important than ever, so please reach out to your child’s Home Group Teacher, House Leader, or student Counsellors if you have concerns or questions, or you’d like information on how to access support for your child.

Welcome back to all of our students and parents/caregivers for 2022, and a special congratulations to all of the 2021 Year 12s (and some Year 11s) who have successfully made the transition to either tertiary studies or the workforce.

We would love to hear from parents/caregivers, friends and students (past and current) some of the success stories of our old scholars. If you have a story to share, please contact a member of the Careers Team.

Brand New Cornerstone College Career Website Students, staff and parents/caregivers are invited to check out the brand new Cornerstone College Careers Website. This is now live and can be accessed either via the Careers tile on Charis or by going to www.cornerstonepathways.com The website contains a huge range of resources, specific to South Australian students and families. Students and parents/ caregivers are invited to sign up to the Calendar Event notifications. This will ensure you don’t miss out on workshops and information sessions put on by various tertiary providers and employers in your chosen pathway.

Students can also access the secure area, to undertake Career quizzes and support with resume and job application writing, as well as a range of other supportive resources. Log in details will be provided to students through their classes and year level meetings.

Workplace Learning At Cornerstone College, students have the opportunity to undertake Workplace Learning in Year 10, 11 and 12. This can be invaluable in helping guide students on potential career paths, which in turn helps guide subject choices and pathways for the following year. It can also be a great way to gain part time work, apprenticeships or assist in meeting VET course requirements.

Workplace Learning is compulsory for all Year 10 students, as part of their SACE subject requirements, and optional for all Year 11 and Year 12 students.

Students wishing to take up this valuable opportunity should begin making plans now for this to occur, as some organisations (eg. Adelaide Zoo, Festival Theatre, Defence Force) are highly competitive and may not accept applicants beyond February or may have predetermined dates for which they will take school students for placements.

Families should contact Ali Hoopmann should they require any assistance regarding Workplace Learning.

Students can generally undertake Workplace Learning at any time throughout the year, but we do have some allocated times for the following year levels: Year 10 Tuesday, 31 May – Friday, 3June Year 11 Monday, 4 July – Friday, 8 July

VET learning for many students is now underway. If a student is absent from a VET course it is the students/parents responsibility to inform both the trainer/training organisation and Cornerstone College.

Students wishing to undertake a VET course in 2022 or beyond, are asked to make an appointment with me as soon as possible to organise this.

Apprenticeships Congratulations to Year 12 students, Hugh Brumpton and Oscar Chapman, who recently completed Workplace Learning and were offered school-based apprenticeships as a result.

Hugh will undertake a Certificate III in Horticulture with Aston Hills Golf Club.

Oscar has been signed up for a school-based apprenticeship, completing Cerificate III in Landscape Construction, working 1 day per week.

Middle School Swimming Carnival The Middle School Swimming Carnival will be held on Tuesday, 1 March at the Mountain Pool, Mount Barker. This is a great opportunity for students to challenge themselves and immerse themselves in the College community. A program for the day has been included above, and parents/caregivers should have received an email with more information.

AROUND THE COLLEGE Mobile phones for students In order to encourage face-to-face social interactions and to minimise interruption to learning, the College has the following approach to student mobile phone use. Students are encouraged not bring their mobile phones unless necessary. If a student does bring a mobile phone to the College, the following protocols are in place. This information is also in the student diary.

Year 7 Mobile phones should be left at home unless there are extenuating circumstances. If a student brings a mobile phone to the College, it must be handed to their Core Group teacher at the beginning of their first lesson.

It will be returned by their teacher before the end of the day.

Year 8 and Year 9 Mobile phones should be left at home unless there are extenuating circumstances. If a student brings a mobile phone to the College, it must be handed to their Home Group teacher at the beginning of Home Group. It can be retrieved from the collection point in Paideia at the end of the day.

Years 10, 11 and 12 All students in Year 10, 11 and 12 are to hand in their mobile phones to their teacher at the start of each lesson in each subject (can use Home Group boxes in each classroom).

Phones are not to be on their person (e.g in their pocket). Students are to keep them in their bags or not bring them to the College if they don’t want to hand them up each lesson.

If a student is found using their phone either in class (or at a break time if they are in Middle School): A teacher or House Leader will take the phone and hand it in to Middle or Senior School Student Reception (MSSR/SSSR) according to their year level.

A restorative discussion with the student will occur where they will be reminded of the College expectations.

The student’s name, and the name of the teacher who has handed in the phone will be recorded.

The student may collect the phone from MSSR/SSSR at the end of the day.

This first breech will be followed up by a phone call to their parent/caregiver.

If there is a second occurrence, the student will be issued with a Friday After School Consequence and further contact with the student’s parent/caregiver will occur.

Pets Online and at Cornerstone At the beginning of the College year during Home Group, Moorak 3 Senior had the cute idea of introducing their pets. Students at home did this online.

2022 Reconciliation Community Project Did you see The Courier page 3 article with the headline ‘Art to Aid Reconciliation’ on Wednesday, 2 February?

We are super excited about this significant reconciliation collaboration project between the Mount Barker District Council, Mount Barker Football Club, Cornerstone College and local artist David Booth.

Cornerstone College students will be working with David to create a reconciliation mural at the Summit Sport and Recreation Park, to be opened during National Reconciliation Week.

This fantastic opportunity stemmed from a Year 8 student’s Inquiry Project last year, where they investigated the question, ‘How can we promote and sustain the history and beliefs of the Peramangk people?’

What a great chance this sets up for learning and supporting our wider community as reconciliation is an important focus at Cornerstone College.

We look forward to documenting the process and sharing it with you along the way.

Advising student absences via the Cornerstone App If your child is going to arrive late or be absent for the whole day, using the Cornerstone App is the most efficient way to advise the College.

Forgot to let us know? If we discover your child has not arrived for the day, we will be in touch. You will receive a text message to your mobile phone asking you to confirm his/her absence and provide a reason.

It is very important to respond as early as possible so that we don’t bother you with reminder text messages prompting for the information again throughout the day, or again on the following day.

We are invested in the personal welbeing of every child, and we thank you for assisting us by notifying the College of all student late arrivals and absences in advance where possible.

WELCOME TO CORNERSTONE - NEW STAFF Name: Clare Dorey Position at Cornerstone: English/History Teacher A little bit about you: We just moved to Mount Barker in January 2022 to be with my husband's family who have all moved here from South Africa. My husband teaches Year 4 and my two children, 8 and 10, are starting at Hills Christian School next week.

We have two rescue dogs, a Boxer and a Staffy.

Why you’re excited to work at Cornerstone or what your passion is: I'm excited about the beautiful grounds and amazing facilities and the chance to share my faith and my love of the outdoors. I'm happy to be starting a new life in the Adelaide Hills.

Name: Brian Pearce Position at Cornerstone: Bus Driver A little bit about you: I'm married with three kids (who are all married). I have four grandkids and one on the way. We live on a farm at Flaxley (I used to be a dairy farmer) and I have been driving buses for 15 years. I enjoy playing tennis, love animals and enjoy music. I play keyboard in our church band and play the pipe organ at the Mount Barker Uniting Church.

Why you’re excited to work at Cornerstone or what your passion is: All of our children were educated through Cornerstone College. I am now looking forward to working within a Christian working environment and connecting with Cornerstone where we make many friends and relationships.

Name: Kara Janus Position at Cornerstone: Visual Arts & Drama Support Officer A little bit about you: My husband Anthony Janus has been a music teacher at the College for 13 years, and over this time I have been inspired by the work and dedication of the teachers and students at Cornerstone who have presented exceptional art exhibitions and drama productions each year.

In 2020 I became a mother to our daughter Elke, who is now developing into a very curious and confident toddler and eager to explore her world.

As a family we enjoy gardening and re-vegetating our property in Upper Sturt to support native animals and birdlife. We also love visiting local parks, playgrounds and wineries in the Adelaide Hills.

I am also a textile-based artist working with embroidery, handmade paper, sculpture and installation.

Why you’re excited to work at Cornerstone or what your passion is: Picasso said, “Every child is an artist. The problem is how to remain an artist once we grow up.”

I believe the Arts has the most powerful ability to deeply connect students and young people of today to their faith and to strengthen their beliefs, to provide a space for healing and build community, to nurture curiosity and innovative ways of thinking, and to help them find their own unique identity and purpose in the world.

I am excited to join the Cornerstone community this year and be able to work alongside and support the teachers and students to excel in their artistic education at the College.

SENIOR SCHOOL

Year 12s Begin On Tuesday, 1 February our new Year 12 cohort reunited in Cibo Plaza for an outside breakfast – the first of no doubt many outside gatherings as Cornerstone’s 2022 Seniors.

This first special day was something of a retreat – a time to talk, eat, swap summer stories, take in some advice from those further along their path and meet in Christian Living classes to get an idea of what lies ahead of them.

Our new Seniors heard from Chris and Chloe Blowes about how people can do hard things. Chris and Chloe have spent the last 5 years gradually putting their lives back together after Chris lost his leg in a shark attack near Port Lincoln.

Our students heard from Tom Nehmy about exercising and flexing their psychological muscle. Our Principal, Craig Fielke, talked about stepping up to the challenge of leadership. The students heard from each other too.

It was a great chance to reconnect and pause before the big plunge of their final year of schooling.

All the best to our Seniors in 2022.

Australian Music Examination

Congratulations to Ava Battiston (Year 12) who will be receiving the Australian Music Examinations Board (AMEB) Certificate in Voice & Communication (CVCA) prize.

Ava has been chosen based on her outstanding achievement in 2021, and will be formally announced at the AMEB SA & NT Awards Ceremony on Saturday, 5 March.

We’re excited to learn that during the summer break, Imogen Szegedi (Year 11) has been named in the basketball U18 State Performance Squad, and subsequently listed as part of the U18 SA Country Nationals Squad.

While many school equestrian events were cancelled due to COIVD-19 last year, Cornerstone College students, Chelsea Clarke (Year 11) and Bella Masters (Year 10) have continued working toward their goals.

Imogen had a successful week of basketball recently at the Adelaide Invitational Challenge playing against SA Country, SA Metro and Tasmania. She still has a weekend of training and trialling to see if she makes the Nationals Team or remains as a reserve.

We are excited to announce both riders have been selected to join the Equestrian SA Eventing 2022 Young Rider Squad.
