SENIOR LEADERSHIP Embracing our Past Inspiring our future Since 1838, Hahndorf has played a significant role in the German and Lutheran story in Australia. In and around Hahndorf, there is a deep and rich heritage in many places, people and practices, which has had an enduring influence on this story. Understanding our mission as a college and continuing to tell this story is a key and underpinning strength.

The 2022 National Lutheran Principals’ Conference was recently held in Hahndorf and had the theme “Embracing our Past, Inspiring our Future”. It was a wonderful opportunity to explore how our heritage provides a compass and touchstone for our current practices, how these practices embed a legacy for our future and how looking into that future can inspire and shape our leadership and schools.

We were privileged to have several excellent presenters, including Michael McQueen. Michael is a thought provoking and astute thinker and analyser of current and future trends and how they translate into the actions and planning of organisations and communities.

In 2019, Michael released his seventh book, Teaching for Tomorrow, which focused on the education sector and explored the key paradigm shifts that need to be considered by governments and school communities to enable them to best equip our children for tomorrow.

Three overall themes he shared with Lutheran principals from across Australia were: •

Being cognisant of the future that is ahead, and the skills and dispositions required to both meet the challenges and take hold of the opportunities. One example was the fact we are entering of the age of augmented and synthetic reality.

•

Being focussed on capability building rather than simply content delivery. Numeracy and literacy skills and the mastery of key skills are an integral part of competency and capacity to engage and function effectively in the world. However, the capacity to innovate, collaborate, empathise, persevere and the like are just as important for the success of students and how they can contribute to their world with meaning and purpose.

•

Reimage the role of educator so that we have a focus on progress rather than precedent. The exploration and answering of three questions can assist in this reimaging: o

What do we need to stop doing?

o

What do we never stop doing?

o

What should we start doing again?

Another key and underpinning strength of Cornerstone is our boldness in engaging with contemporary and futuristic thinking and making efforts to align the future we know will come with the skills and dispositions we work to develop and sustain in our students to be expert contributors, collaborators and innovators to that future.

Congratulations Principal Craig Fielke Principal Craig Fielke is the recent recipient of The Australian Council for Educational Leaders (ACEL) SA 2022 Educational Leadership Medal. ACEL SA honours those educational leaders who in the view of their peers have made a significant contribution to the understanding and practice of educational leadership.

ACEL is the largest professional association in the education sector in Australia and the wider Asia-Pacific region, with a network of more than 7,000 members and over 45,000 educators, with branches in each state and territory.

MINISTRY – PRAYER GARDEN

Ministry – Prayer Garden This year the College is engaged in the construction of a new prayer garden, utilising the symbolism of the ‘labyrinth’.

In terms of labyrinth structure, there are 3 parts to the experience that parallel the life of Christian discipleship. First, the meandering walk into the labyrinth, which represents the spiralling complexities of human existence. The road is long and winding, but the opportunity exists for walkers of the labyrinth to let go of the things that bind and constrain them, through stillness, prayer, confession and meditation. The road in provides an invitation for Christ’s peace and forgiveness, as they draw closer to the centre of the labyrinth. Second, on arrival at the centre, walkers find themselves face to face with the cross, in the presence of the Christ who embraces them and restores them. This is a time for stillness, for listening, and an appreciation for the deep grace that the Gospel provides to individuals. The walker’s time in the centre provides opportunity for thankfulness, as peace for the soul delivers the person in readiness for the final chapter of the journey.

Finally, the journey back out, once more a meandering trail that parallels the world we are returning to. On this leg of the journey, a sense of being sent is enjoyed, as the Spirit of Christ himself joins them on the journey, and empowers them for the

highs and lows, the twists and turns, of life’s road ahead. As walkers leave the labyrinth, a blessing may be offered as the final spiritual component of the journey, a gift from God to buoy the spirit in its return into the world.

WELLBEING

SPECIAL REPORT: Screen Time As a result of the global pandemic, there has been a noticeable shift in the amount of time people spend on screen-based devices. Families are transitioning back to pre-COVID routines but many are still struggling to re-establish the boundaries and rules around screen use. Some continue to deal with digital conflict and tech-tantrums on a daily basis. The latest research found that 77% of teenagers spend more than five hours on screens per day, but it is important to note that not all screen time is considered equal.

Parents play a crucial role in modelling a positive and healthy approach to using screens and assisting children to navigate the content they watch. It is better to model and mentor screen use, rather than monitor it. Children tend to do more of what they see us do, and less of what we tell them to do.

However, it is still important to outline the risks and highlight the benefits of screen use to ensure you keep a balanced attitude. Encourage discussions around the issues that people experience in monitoring their screen time and be honest about your own difficulties.

Parents need to remain firm in their approach to managing screen time. Excessive screen time can be detrimental to a child’s overall wellbeing. Ensuring the correct privacy settings are in place is vital to prevent children from being inadvertently exposed to inappropriate content or online predators. Parents need to also be mindful of the potential impact screen time can have on a child’s social, emotional, educational, behavioural, and even physical domains.

In this edition of SchoolTV, caregivers will be provided with a range of guidelines and strategies to help manage screen time at home. We hope you take time to reflect on the information offered in this month’s edition, and we always welcome your feedback.

2021 YEAR 7 TO 11 DUX Congratulations to the 2021 Year 7 to 11 Duces On Monday, 2 May the College was finally able to meet as a whole school, and we awarded and celebrated the 2021 duces from last year.

Year level duces are awaraded by grades with a GPA out of 100 for each semester to calculate the dux. Traditionally, the duces are presented at the Opening Service of the following year.

AROUND THE COLLEGE

Focus Week

Aroona Focus Week In Week 3 of Term 2 Aroona once again ran their Focus Week theme of ‘Challenge for Change.’ This was the third year whereby Home Groups took on a task that was out of their comfort zone while donating small change.

It was fantastic to see all the amazing challenges being completed throughout the week.

Some of our favourites include: •

Making and delivering fairy bread to ALL 48 Home Groups (NA2S)

Creating acrostic poems for different staff members (AR1S)

•

Cooking breakfast (pancakes) for all the Home Groups in Lower Paideia (MO6M)

•

Creating a rap song about ‘Challenge for Change’ (MO3S)

•

Preparing afternoon tea for the Pastoral Care Team (Ms Bovingdon & Mr McDonald)

•

Collecting canned food to donate to an outreach centre (NA3M, NA4M & NA5M)

competition and Sophie Matthews (Year 8) for winning the cup stacking challenge.

The “Home Group who challenged themselves the most” will be announced at assembly in Week 6, winning themselves a cooked breakfast.

On Friday, students and staff enjoyed ‘letting their hair down’ with a Non-Uniform Day and mini-challenges in Cibo Plaza at lunch. Students and staff enjoyed hot chips, racing each other stacking cups and many tried their hat at the annual planking challenge. Congratulations Sachin Bonnici (Year 9) and Chloe Foster (Year 7) who broke last year’s plank record (previously 7:03) with scores of 12:02 and 11:00, respectively. Well done to Hamish Edwards (Year 9) for winning the handball

AROUND THE COLLEGE

Community Mural Project Painting Day 1 Thursday, May 5 Painting of the Community Reconciliation Mural finally kicked off at the Summit Sports Park! Students braved the rain and cold to begin painting the mural that they helped to design in Term 1 with Aboriginal artist David Booth. The students used sponges to create a beautiful, textured background with guidance from David. This was one of two sessions and in the up coming weeks the students will start work on painting symbols and stories on the wall. We would once again like to thank David for his care and effort with mentoring the students with this project.

We would also like to thank Peter McGinn from the Mount Barker Council and Scott Filmer from the Mount Barker Football Club for their ongoing support and involvement in this project.

Milika Filmer (Year 11) Painting Day 2 Friday, May 13 It was with much anticipation that the students visited the Summit Sports Park for the second painting day of the Reconciliation Mural. Artist David Booth had painted in black outlines of some of the symbols that would be added to the background, which was sponge painted the previous week.

Students were taught the safe and correct way to use spray cans and once masked up got to work. Some of the students were nervous and a steady hand was required but David gave the students the confidence to have a go. After visits from journalists from The Herald and The Courier the students had a chance to sit back and admire their work. David not only shared his amazing artistic skills with the students but also shared some of his family story and the meaning and importance of reconciliation. The students in the second group were also privileged to have David play his yidaki (didgeridoo).

It has been a real blessing for our students and teachers to work with David during this project. His warmth, skills and genuine desire to make connections with members of our community has made this a memorable experience for all involved.

We would love our wider community to join us at the Mt Barker Community Reconciliation Day & Indigenous Round on May 28, where the Mural will be officially unveiled.

MIDDLE SCHOOL Women in Stem Seminar - “Scientriffic Women” On Friday, 13 May we were fortunate to host “Scientriffic Women’s Seminar’ a seminar specifically for female Cornerstone College students. The Women in Stem Seminar was organised

by Brian Haddy from the Science Collective and was the first of its kind. The seminar was opened by Independent MP Rebekha Sharkie and featured six keys speakers from various science careers. Speakers on the day were

MIDDLE SCHOOL Adolescent Success Middle Years School of Excellence 2022 At Cornerstone College, one of our Strategic Intentions is to ‘Empower Innovative Teaching and Contemporary Learning’.

Keeping up with current best practice in education is vitally important if we are to prepare our students for life beyond school in a world that is changing at an ever-increasing rate.

We are proud of the structures, pedagogies and methods of assessment that have been implemented at Cornerstone over the last 5 years, that are in line with what is considered best practice. We are also proud to have recently been recognised for our hard work in this area, by the leading Middle Schooling Association in Australia known as Adolescent Success, as one of only 6 schools throughout Australia and New Zealand to be awarded their Middle Years School of Excellence. https://adolescentsuccess.org.au/Recipients

This award was based on the work done in the Middle School to: •

Implement a new structure at Year 8 that allows for Team Teaching and a deliberate focus on the Capabilities

Establish a new Year 9 subject called Ignite, which uses Inquiry Learning as its foundational pedagogy

Create and use Learning Progressions as an assessment method to highlight where students are at with their learning and their next steps of improvement.

This is all down to the hard-working, creative thinking and brave educators we have here at Cornerstone, who recognise that we don’t innovate just for innovation’s sake, we innovate and implement to allow our students to be prepared for an uncertain future and create positive change in their world.

A Message From the Year 12 Formal Committee Planning is well underway for the Year 12 formal which will be held on Saturday, 30 July at the Adelaide Hilton.

The Pre-formal will be held at the College, starting at 4.30pm.

Students can then depart for the Formal at approximately 6.15pm.

Students should arrive at The Hilton by 7.00pm for pre-dinner drinks followed by our formal proceedings and three-course dinner at 7.30pm.

A DJ will be present and a dance floor available to students. The evening will conclude at 11.00pm.

Price - $110 per ticket.

SENIOR SCHOOL

Year 10 Outdoor Education Camp Year 10 Outdoor Education students accompanied by three teachers Miss Emily Bartholomew, Mr Joel Liddicoat and Mr Matt Schirmer and three old-scholar assistants Cooper Hough, Renee Hein and Sarah Howe embarked on their 3-day hiking expedition to the Flinders Ranges on Wednesday, 11 May. One group began their hike at Mambray Creek, another at Melrose and the final group departing from Alligator Gorge. Students travelled approximately 40kms across the three days carrying all of their belongings in their rucksacks including tents, sleeping bags/mats, food/water, cooking equipment and clothing. For most students, this was their first real experience of hiking and camping where they were completely reliant on using only the items they had packed. Students developed their leadership, collaboration, navigation, campcraft and their perseverance through some of the more challenging sections of walking. SENIOR SCHOOL Year 12 Commemorative Jacket Presentation On Thursday, 5 May our Year 12 student cohort received their 2022 commemorative jackets. The Jackets were presented by their House Group Leaders. The ceremony included a presentation of photos which illustrated their journey from Year 7 students in 2017 to present day.

CAREERS Year 10 Workplace Learning

Year 11 & 12 Workplace Learning

By now all students who are to undertake Workplace Learning next week (Term 2 Week 5) should have provided a completed Agreement form and are aware of their responsibilities for the week. Some of our Year 10 students who should be doing WPL during Week 5 and haven’t made the necessary arrangements will now need to make other arrangements to meet the demands of their Workplace Practices subject. This can be discussed with their respective teacher.

Our Year 11 & 12 students have the option of undertaking Workplace Learning in the week of Monday, 4 July. Students are also free to negotiate other dates if required to suit employers. This is a great opportunity to help students confirm possible pathway options, which can support the subject selection process for Year 12 and beyond. Students who are interested in undertaking work placement should be discussing this with Mrs Ali Hoopmann, our Workplace Learning Coordinator.

Please remember that students should not be undertaking Workplace Learning, without a completed Workplace Learning Agreement form in place, so that they are covered for insurance purposes.

Year 11 Career Focus Days On Thursday, 30 June and Friday, 1 July, our Year 11 students will be involved in our annual Career Focus Day excursions.

These days have been designed to provide our students with an opportunity to fully immerse in their chosen areas of interest, so that they can make informed decisions. The final program is still being finalised as we negotiate Covid restrictions and student interests. Further information about these days will follow shortly.

Year 10 Career Focus Day Next Monday, 30 May, we will be running for the first time, the Year 10 Career Focus Day. This will be held at Cornerstone College, and will involve presentations and interactive workshops from a number of organisations, to assist our students in making informed decisions about their potential future pathways. We are thrilled to have representatives from Flinders University, The University of Adelaide, University of South Australia, TAFE SA, PEER and the Motor Traders Association (MTA). Year 9 & 10 Girls KO Touch Football

Interschool Mountain Biking

The Year 9 & 10 Girls Knockout Touch Football team had great weather before it rained. While the girls only won one of their four games, they were proud of how they played, especially in two of them. There was some tough competition out there!

Two teams represented Cornerstone at the School Sport SA Mountain Bike 2022 State Championships earlier this month held at Craigburn Farm Mountain Bike Trails, Sturt Gorge Recreation Park.

Emily Stewart (Year 8 ), Dante Man and Matthew Hacquoil (Year 7) made up the Year 7 & 8 mixed team and finished 4th that age group (pictured) Hamish Edwards (Year 9), Gus Battiston, Oscar Loffler and Koby Wilson-Crowe (Year 8) made up the team competing in Year 9 & 10 boys age group.

Overall, Cornerstone came 33rd. Great job team!

SUCCESS & ACHIEVEMENTS National Swimming Championships Congratulations to Emily Willett (Year 10) who competed in the National Swimming Championships in April. Emily swam in 4 Open Para events and achieved 2 PB’s. In the 50m Breaststroke she won the Bronze medal and was the only South Australian to win a medal in the Open category – this is a fantastic achievement.

In the Multi Class Age Nationals, Emily swam 9 events making her a finalist in 5 and swimming 4 PBs.

South Australian Student Representative Council (SA SRC) We are pleased to announce Karlie Grace (Year 12) and Kasey Taylor (Year 10) have been selected to the inaugural South Australian Student Representative Council (SA SRC).

Congratulations Karlie and Kasey. We wish you both well on your journey as change leaders for the young people of the College and the wider community.

Emily also had the opportunity to meet many Paralympic Swimmers during the Championships.

Water Polo Australian Youth Championships Over the Easter Break, Beau Walsh (Year 8) represented South Australia at the Australian Youth Championship for Water Polo held this year in Brisbane.

Beau’s 14&U team competed alongside teams from all over Australia and managed 5th in their division.

Highlights for Beau was taking to the field in all 7 games, scoring a goal as well as winning a “swim up” at the start of a quarter to give his team the first advantage.

Ballarat International Horse Trials Congratulations to Chelsea Clarke (Year 11) who competed in the Ballarat International Horse Trials in early May. It was a very cold and wet weekend but that could not stop Chelsea and squggles who won in their class.
