SENIOR LEADERSHIP Year 6 Discovery Day and Hills Integrated Lutheran Schools (HILS) Day A key transition for young people is moving from the familiar primary school environment to a new environment at secondary school. Successful transitions help young people feel more confident in their ability to step into new situations.

inviting older siblings or friends to share information about the school system ie. timetable, changing classrooms

practising ‘what if?’ scenarios
Young people who experience a positive transition into their new school are more likely to:

establishing routines including relaxing and fun activities
•
staying connected and interested in your young person’s learning

feel excited and motivated to learn

have good relationships with others

develop a sense of belonging within the school community
This positive start can make a big difference to young people’s school engagement, learning and wellbeing. Families play an important role in preparing and supporting young people to make positive transitions. You can help equip your young person for the transition to secondary school by: •
planning and getting organised
•
visiting the school and encouraging your child to go to any orientation days
•
doing a trial run with travelling to school, including taking public transport and using a travel card

Cornerstone College provides a range of opportunities to support the transition for primary aged students as they prepare to join our community. Recently we hosted 150 Year 6 students from our neighbouring primary schools on Discovery Day on Thursday, 2 June and Hills Integrated Lutheran Schools (HILS) Day on Friday, 3 June. Students experienced snapshots of learning in subjects like Drama, Art, Music, Technologies and Science. Judging by the engagement and energy in each classroom, there was a sense of excitement about learning in a secondary school setting. Our partnership with primary schools and families helps support student transition and builds confidence at this important time for young people. Shane Schoff Deputy Principal

MINISTRY MATTERS As this semester closes out I reflect again on the invitation for students to write down their anonymous prayers at the end of last semester. Few things have humbled me as much as reading our students prayers, some of which are documented below.

WELLBEING
SPECIAL REPORT: Building Resilience Post Pandemic Unfortunately, the mental health of young people has been significantly impacted by the pandemic. As many families settle back into pre-COVID routines, there seems to be a pervasive sense of optimism about what lies ahead. Unfortunately children and teens are not immune to what is now being termed the “psychological pandemic”. Young people are at risk of not achieving the primary demands of developmental tasks such as procuring independence, identity formation, as well as obtaining and maintaining peer relationships. What kids need most in the current environment is support, understanding, empathy and encouragement from caring adults. They live up or down to the expectations we set for them. If there is a panacea to the adversity caused by the pandemic, then it is the building of resilience. Resilience is the capacity to face, overcome, be strengthened and transformed by adversity.
Never before, have parents needed the skills, the knowledge and the strategies to build resilience in their children as much as they do now. There are 7 integral and interrelated components that make up being resilient that can help young people thrive and develop healthy coping strategies. This Special Report explores the “7 C’s of Resilience” and includes suggested strategies on how adult carers can best facilitate them. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback. Adelaide Choral Eisteddfod
Music in May
Somethin’ Else Jazz Vocal Ensemble travelled down to Elder Hall to compete in the Adelaide Choral Eisteddfod on Wednesday, 15 June. They performed against other schools in the Open Age, Small Choir Division and performed the pieces “Landslide” and “His Eye is on the Sparrow”. The choir performed with musicality, strong blend and style and placed third in their division. Congratulations!
Music in May was held in Atelier Theatre on Thursday, 26 May. The evening showcased the progress of the Senior School Ensembles who performed to a welcoming and supportive audience. Studio Ensemble, Hot House, Senior Vocal Ensemble, Somethin’ Else and On the Corner Jazz performed alongside Year 12 soloist and the Year 10 Class Band, showcasing a broad range of music styles. A big congratulations to the students and staff involved!

2023 Student Leadership Applications commence in Term 3 Service is core to all we do, and leaders at Cornerstone are required to actively contribute to the benefit of all. Student leadership also involves presenting a positive example to the student body in regard to College culture and standards, including but not limited to, behaviour, uniform, punctuality and encourages others to do the same. College Leaders (Year 12, 2023 only) Applications for College Leaders commence on first day of Term 3. College Leaders at Cornerstone demonstrate the Christian values that form the foundation of the College and have a significant influence in creating opportunities for others. Six College Leaders are appointed and their role includes representing the College and creating opportunities to link the Middle and Senior Schools together. •

MIDDLE SCHOOL
Year 10 Drama Group Performance On Wednesday, 25 May at 4.00pm and 7.00pm, my Year 10 Drama class performed 7 short comical pieces for a live audience. Students rehearsed their short plays for a period of 7 weeks which gave them the opportunity to develop their ensemble and communication skills through group discussions
and interactive participation. Groups were encouraged to experiment in rehearsals, by applying a variety of different acting styles. All performances were well received by audience members and a special thanks goes to Liam Murphy and Luke Borgas for assisting with sound and technology on both nights. Matthew Braid Drama Teacher
Year 10 Outdoor Education During Week 7, the Year 10 Outdoor Education students went on their final practical excursion to Morialta Conservation Park to go Rock Climbing and Abseiling on real rock. My class on Tuesday claimed the bulk of the sunshine and Emily Bartholomew’s class got the rain! Despite the different conditions both classes demonstrated a good ability to safely belay each other and transfer the skills they developed on our climbing wall in a real environment. Grandparents and Special Friends’ Day 2022 On Tuesday, 28 June our Year 7s hosted the annual Grandparents & Special Friends’ Day in inbarendi. The Year 7s enjoyed the company of their Grandparents and Special Friends over an action-packed morning of entertainment, student performances and morning tea, followed by a student led tour of the College.

Year 8 Core – Senate Election Campaign
•
Our Year 8 students ran their Senate Election Campaigns to coincide with the Federal Election. Students formed their own political parties based on their values and ideals and each party came up with a few policies they felt strongly about, created a policy statement and then formed a campaign strategy.
Each candidate gave a 2 minute speech outlining their party’s policies and the reasons why their fellow students should vote for them, and then had to answer a hard-hitting question from our wise adjudicator Graham Gallasch.

Science and Engineering Challenge On Thursday, 16 June a selected team of 23 Year 9 and Year 10 students took part in the Science and Engineering Challenge at Flinders University. The University of Newcastle organises this annual competition and the Challenge encourages students to problem solve in unfamiliar environments. The day involves students thinking of creative solutions to complex problems, with the added element of having restricted materials provided to them. It was a great opportunity for students to collaborate with peers from the College and challenge students from other schools. In groups of 2-4 students, we competed in different

hands-on activities against other schools. Students tested their construction skills through a variety of challenges including earthquake proof towers, bridge building, water turbine and a mars rover construction. Each group worked well together as a team, and we were delighted to see their enthusiasm grow throughout the Challenges presented to them. We placed 7th with the scores being very tight across all schools in attendance. A big thank you to each team member for playing an important role in the exploration of science and engineering both for themselves and for the future of STEM at the College. Year 8 Activities Week During week 5 our Year 8s engaged with a variety of challenging and authentic activities. Students were pushed outside of their comfort zone with orienteering, high ropes, team building exercises and navigating the city to earn the coveted ‘Malls Balls’ Trophy. It was pleasing to see students demonstrate and develop their empathy and skills in collaboration and resilience.

“I really enjoyed the orienteering challenges, around the College to begin with and then amongst the bushland at the campsite. Amongst the bush was way harder as we needed to follow the map much more closely and look for landmarks.”
•
“I really enjoyed City Challenge and the ‘Survivor’ style Team Challenges on the last day. The weather was a bit cold but it was fun trying to work as a team to complete different puzzles and tasks. Our team came 3rd which I couldn’t believe!”
•
“I liked most of the week but there was a lot of walking! It was fun trying to cook our spaghetti on the trangias at the campsite. It didn’t seem that hard but our group still managed to burn the spaghetti!”

“I learnt how to problem solve when we got lost and also how to follow a map better. I really enjoyed the day and the memories that were made.”

“It surprised me how hard it is to navigate the city and how easy you could get lost, but I learnt to keep calm in difficult situations! The day was a bit stressful but fun.”
Middle School Music Camp The Middle School Music Camp was a fun, energetic experience for students who participate in JIVE, Blue Note, and Little Big Band. Middle School Music Camp consisted of two days, the first was rehearsing songs and playing games, and the second, working with Adelaide multi-instrumentalist, Adam Page. The students were privileged to have Adam work with them to create awesome music. He did some fantastic solos on his saxophone and flute, showed us his breathtaking skills on the loop pedals. Special thanks to Mr Day, Mrs Duffield, Mrs GonsiorTronnolone, Mr Janus, Ms Zerner, and Music Council members: Heidi, Liam and Seb for their dedication on the night and for making this an entertaining time for all the students. Year 11 Drama – Finley Floats On Tuesday, 7 June my Year 11 class presented the premier performance of Finley Floats. This play was written by me and workshopped with the students. The class had enjoyed a creative few months, devising and exploring character development and theatrical atmosphere.
With original music by Luka Bolte and original artwork by Hermione Dew (Year 11), Finley Floats was a beautiful visual and aural experience. Jane Bennett Thompson Drama Teacher
State Theatre Company Cathedral This year Cornerstone College had the immense privilege of hosting the State Theatre Company as part of their Regional South Australia tour. Senior Drama and Year 12 English students were able to experience live professional theatre in Atelier Theatre. Students viewed the play Cathedral by renowned playwright Caleb Lewis. It was a quality performance which showcased wonderful acting and a highly complex production set involving spectacular lighting and sound effects. Nathan O’Keefe starred as a diver, haunted by loss, who overcame his feelings and memories at the bottom of Cathedral, a cave on Australia’s Limestone Coast. The audience journeyed with the protagonist as he encountered many challenging moments and was haunted by his past. Ultimately affirming, Cathedral forced the audience to question if it is best to turn away from pain or face it head on. We are incredibly thankful to the State Theatre Company for choosing us as a venue for their Regional South Australia tour. This would not have been possible without what we have at Cornerstone College and we are thankful for the opportunities we can provide our students with. Year 11 OED Hiking During Week 5 the Year 11 Outdoor Education students arrived early at the College to depart for a 5 day hiking trip in the Gariwerd-Grampians National Park. The students had all the food and equipment required for 5 days squeezed in their hiking packs. Considering the challenging weather forecast extra layers where most definitely required! On Tuesday conditions deteriorated and the students experienced firsthand the effect high winds have on temperature. This lesson was enhanced with the snow that started falling on the mountain tops! The students responded remarkably to the challenging conditions doing things such as eating lunch under tent flys and taking extremely short breaks to maintain warmth. That afternoon the students (and teachers!) were relieved to crawl into warm sleeping bags and properly thaw out. As conditions eased the students were able to show their navigation and leadership skills as they negotiated some of the steepest sections of the Grampians Peaks Trail. Friday brought the satisfaction of completing a challenging expedition and the comforts of junk food (and coffee for the teachers)! Joel Liddicoat Teacher
Year 12 Retreat On Thursday, 2 June Year 12 students, along with the accompaniment of teaching staff, headed over to the tranquil surrounds of Normanville. The day Retreat provided a timely opportunity for our Year 12 students to take a much-needed break from their studies, to reflect on their College journey and spend time connecting with their peers. Upon arrival at the Retreat, students worked in teams in an array of light-hearted challenges including scavenger hunts and creative newspaper dress competitions. Fun and laughs were had by all and some incredibly impressive animal-themed newspaper outfits were created by the students. The Year 12s also had the opportunity to quietly reflect on their friendships and leave notes of thanks and affirmation to each other. In the evening, students spent time chatting around the bonfire. The Retreat experience was a timely and uplifting break, leaving our Year 12 students feeling refreshed and relaxed. Alysha Green Year 12 Christian Living Teacher 10

You cannot keep it in your pocket.

CAREERS MTA Open Day
VET in 2023
On Thursday, 16 June interested students from Year 10 & Year 11 travelled to the Motor Traders Association (MTA), for their annual Open Day. Students were able to learn about the various career opportunities in the Automotive industry and engage in some fun, hands on activities.
For students and families considering Vocational Pathway options in 2023, it can be useful to start having those discussions early in the lead up to subject selection in Term 3. This can help clear up any questions or concerns that parents may have regarding these courses, which can be particularly difficult to address in the time allocated for subject selection appointments. If students and parents/caregivers wish to discuss the possible options for VET courses, our online PTO Booking system will be made available to families at the start of next term so that they can make an appointment with a member of the Careers Team, or alternatively families can contact me directly on 8398 6019 or via adoyle@cornerstone.sa.edu.au. Big Day In – Careers In ICT & Technology On Thursday, 16 June interested students from Years 10, 11 & 12 travelled to the University of Adelaide, to attend the “Big Day In”, a showcase of the various career opportunities in the fields of ICT & Technology. With a wide range of guest speakers and various organisations showcasing their courses and employment opportunities, this was a really valuable day for the students who attended.
Year 10 Career Awareness Program On Monday, 30 May we hosted a new Career event for our Year 10s, with a range of guest speakers and practical workshops. Representatives from the University of South Australia, University of Adelaide, Flinders University, TAFE SA, the Motor
Traders Association and PEER were all present to work with our students and help them to identify some of the opportunities available to them in the future. The feedback from the students was overall very positive and we thank these organisations for giving up their time to present to our students.

SPORT Open Girls Knockout Netball On Thursday, 9 June 12 students represented Cornerstone College in the Open Girls Knockout Netball competition. The girls were coached by me, playing back-to-back games against Heathfield, St Aloysius and Blackwood. The girls fought hard against each team, supporting and encouraging one another. Even with a few of the girls out in the second round playing Knockout Football, they were willing to give anything a go. They played in missing positions and took on new leadership roles. Unfortunately, they ended the day without a win, but this did not show the determination and effort from them all. It was a fun and enjoyable day, and a great opportunity for them all to get out on the court with new and familiar faces. Leanne Filmer Teacher
Girls Open Knockout Football On Thursday, 9 June 20 eager Year 11 and Year 12 girls represented Cornerstone College in the Knockout Football competition against SEDA. It was a rough day for footy with the grey clouds looming closer as the game progressed however, this did not impact the enthusiasm of coaches Anthony Janus and Matthew Schirmer who were keen to see the progress the girls had made since last season. The girls knew they were in for a tough game however, this did not dishearten their positive spirit. With the rain bearing down the girls fought for every possession. Celebrations were abundant with a mark from Bridie Marshall (Year 12) taking the games ‘mark of the day’. Throughout the game all the girls performed exceptionally well under the difficult conditions although, Zara Walsh (Year 12), Demi Schwarz (Year 12) and Ava Battiston (Year 12) were named in the game’s best players. 13
The leadership team selected were Zara Walsh (Year 12), Ava Battiston (Year 12) and Persephone Hannaford (Year 12) who all were supportive, encouraging and provided guidance for the team on and off field. Mr Anthony Janus and Mr Matthew Schirmer said they saw a significant improvement in the girls’ skill and communication throughout the game in addition to their ability to gel together since playing together last year. A huge thank you to Tiah Hough (Year 12) who was Cornerstone’s runner providing advice and guidance from the bench as well as Molly Noel (Year 12) who battered the conditions and was an excellent Goal Umpire. Another massive thank you to the coaches for yet another year and making many of the girls final knockout competition extremely memorable. Ava Battiston Team Member

SPORT SSSSA Athletics Championships On Tuesday, 12 April 55 of our students travelled down to the SA Athletics Stadium to compete in the SSSSSA Athletics Championships in the B1 Division. There were some fantastic results during the day and well done to the many students who filled events on the day.

Year 11 and Year 12 Football On Tuesday, 24 May a selection of boys from Year 11 and Year 12 took on Tenison Woods College from Mount Gambier in football. While we were definitely outmatched in the height and weight department and missing many key players due to COVID-19 and injury the boys put up an incredible fight throughout the whole match. We started well in the wet being right in the game at the end of the first quarter. However, from that point on we couldn’t keep up with the slicker ball skills and we struggled to make inroads up forward. Our attack on the ball and competitiveness was outstanding, however.

Special recognition should be given to the following students who won a Standard on the day. A Standard is designed to award the top 5% of competitors in that event across all grades and is a high achievement. The Cornerstone Girls finished 1st and the Boys finished 6th and therefore we were awarded 4th place out of the 7 schools competing. SSSSA C Grade Interschool Swimming Championships On Thursday, 26 May 26 dedicated swimmers represented Cornerstone College in the SSSSA C Grade Swimming Championships held at the SA Aquatic and Leisure Centre, Marion. It was great to witness students doing what they love, and what they work so hard towards in their spare time. It was also encouraging to have a small number of students swimming at their first official competition.

SPORT
Year 9 and Year 10 Knockout Soccer The Year 9/10 Boys Knockout Soccer assembled on a Tuesday morning to prepare for their days games. We were all a little nervous to see who would show up as a number of the team had recently been absent. Fortunately, 13 students appeared ready to get involved with the days match. Team Captain Dylan Weyland (Year 10) set the team positions and the boys warmed up. In the first game against Victor Harbor we had the upper hand but were initially slow to convert that forward pressure into goals. Once the drought was broken we regularly converted and came away with a 5 goal win.
Tatachilla were a very strong and physical team and our boys worked hard to match their intensity. Toby Boekel (Year 11) in goals made some exceptional saves early in the game and kept the scores tied. As the game progressed Tatachilla’s quick attacks gave them some success with a finishing score of 3:1 their way. While we didn’t progress, it was two excellent games to watch, and the boys should be proud of their efforts. Joel Liddicoat Teacher

For a team of mixed skill with little experience playing together, the girls showed an impressive level of ‘grit’ as they battled against teams from Blackwood High School and Scotch College. The odds, it seemed, were not in our favour with final scores as follows: 17
Coaches were impressed with how the girls maintained high spirits and encouraged each other throughout the day. Haidyn Ingram (Year 10) Congratulations Haidyn on playing soccer on a state level again this year (Junior NTC).
Kinyin Anderson (Year 7) Kinyin competed in the State Fencing Championships and placed first in his age group and will be representing in Nationals later this year. Congratulations Kinyin. Madi Fox (Year 11) Madi has been selected to represent the State in the mixed basketball team at the Special Olympics in Tasmania in October this year. Chelsea is pictured with John Khouzam who presented the Award. The Award is named in honour of his daughter Natasha Khouzam who was tragically killed whilst riding cross country at a State Level competition.
So after also winning the State Eventing Championships at Naracoorte, Chelsea and Squiggles have certainly had a big 12 months and she is now having a well-earned break before she kicks off again late August.

Special Olympics gives people with intellectual disabilities the confidence they need to succeed, on and off the playing field and is part of a global inclusion movement for people with intellectual disabilities using sport as a platform to unite people and promote inclusion. Children and adults with intellectual disabilities can be confident, independent, healthy and brave − just like me and you. Special Olympics Australia’s National Games competition runs every four years and provides athletes and people with intellectual disabilities the ability to come together with their peers and compete in their chosen sports and win gold! This Saturday’s market will be brimming with even more producers but also the artisans will join the line-up. We will be hosting over 40 stalls including the makers of candles, jewellery, wooden products, felt, plants, kids play, clothes and soaps and creams. This week we will also host the massage ladies from Mt Barker Therapeutic Massage Centre. So if you need that 20 minute massage to relax and unwind, come and do your shopping, have a massage, grab a coffee and something to eat and then sit down and enjoy the local music at the market this week.
