Teachers can be a source of inspiration and, equally importantly, provide a dependable and consistent influence on young people as they make choices about further education, work, and life.

MINISTRY – PASSION MEDITATION

Ministry – Passion Meditation This Holy Week, our Year 12 students are performing the 2022 Passion Meditation. This year’s meditation, directed by Jane Bennett Thompson, centers around a conversation on a park bench and the heaviness of heart that we may all feel at some point in our lives.

As the drama unfolds, we are reminded that the power of Easter comes in its message of forgiveness and hope. For, no matter what season we are in, God is with us, full of grace. One of the most beautiful things about God’s love, is that it also frees us to forgive ourselves.

We are so thankful to everyone who has contributed to this year’s production, and we hope it allows our community to meditate on the joy and freedom of Easter.

WELLBEING

SPECIAL REPORT: The Conflict in Ukraine Around the world, people are saddened and devastated by the events unfolding in Ukraine. Both adults and young people alike are feeling the stresses of war from afar as they experience fear, frustration and helplessness. The 24 hour news cycle has shown us upsetting images raising many questions, especially for our young people, about what is happening.

Parents/caregivers need to be guided by their child’s curiosity.

There is strong evidence to suggest that having a supportive discussion about a stressful event in a developmentally appropriate way, can actually decrease distress. It’s best to “name it, to tame it.” This will also combat any misinformation to which they have most likely already been exposed to through social media, pictures or video clips.

With less life experience than adults, young people may need help navigating news about this crisis. Use this is as an opportunity to model and encourage compassionate views towards fellow humans, regardless of distance or circumstance.

This Special Report offers guidance on how best to discuss the conflict in Ukraine. We hope you take a moment to reflect on the information offered, and as always, we welcome your feedback.

AROUND THE COLLEGE inbarendi Landscape A common reflection about Cornerstone College is the beautiful and natural campus. The significant trees (size, age and variety), native gardens, wetland and green spaces are quite unique.

Amongst our buildings and contemporary learning areas, there are a variety of outdoor spaces that are regularly used as learning environments and social places that students can gather in their breaks.

This week, another beautiful outdoor space has been completed and made available for our students.

The sloping area between Anakalypsi (Library) and inbarendi (gymnasium) has been developed into a tiered, outdoor space with Gabian wall finishes. It has a scenic outlook and features seating and landscaping. The plantings include crepe myrtles and a selection of grasses.

While Cornerstone has been blessed with this amazing location, the College is also blessed with very creative and clever grounds staff. They have designed and constructed this area to complement its stunning location. This includes the design and construction of the Gabian walls and outdoor furniture.

Prior to its development, this area was a thoroughfare for travelling from the library to the gym. With the vision of our Grounds Manager, Shane Hein, it is now an attractive and peaceful outdoor space that will be used for both learning and recreation.

Adolescent Success School of Excellence Cornerstone College has been recognised by Adolescent Success as a national school of excellence. This award recognises the innovative, contemporary, and impactful learning and wellbeing structures that Cornerstone provides for our

students. It also celebrates the hard work and dedication of the educators who work with our students each day.

AROUND THE COLLEGE

Naturi Focus Week and Bake Off On Friday, 1 April the College took part in the 6th Annual Great Naturi Bake Off. This fundraiser involved Home Groups entering one, or more cakes in the Bake Off competition. Home Groups competed to win one of five cake categories, with cakes being sliced up and sold to staff and students at recess and lunchtime.

Naturi would like to thank every student and teacher who baked a cake. The quality of the cakes this year was higher than ever, and it is clear that we have some great culinary talent within our Cornerstone community. There were many other incredible cakes that were unable to be recognised as winners, but certainly deserve commendation. The winners of the five cake categories will be announced at Assembly next term.

MIDDLE SCHOOL

The Rite Journey Monday, 28 March saw the official launch of this year’s Rite Journey program for our Year 9 students.

Students and their teacher-guides first ventured to Mount Barker Summit. Once there, we were introduced by two Ngarrindjeri people, Mark and Caitlin, to the passage to adulthood that some of the traditional custodians of these lands experienced. The boys and girls groups were also each presented with an engraved totem, made by Mark Koolmatrie.

It was a great afternoon and evening, marking the official start of our Year 9 Rite Journey year, where we intentionally experience, think and reflect on the journey towards adulthood as it starts to loom on these teens’ horizons.

We wish them all the best in the coming year.

SENIOR SCHOOL

Year 12 Legacy Mural The Arts branch of the Year 12 Legacy program have embarked on painting a mural with indigenous symbolism which represents the local Peramangk people and the Cornerstone culture.

They are painting the mural next to cibo bello.

The class invited Cedric Varcoe, a Ngarrindjeri artist, to teach them about aboriginal culture and to assist them with this honourable project. The goal for the mural was to include all of the Houses, various buildings and areas of the College, and different aspects of our Cornerstone and the Peramangk culture. The class also opted to include some references to a few Dreamtime stories with the help of Cedric.

Thank you to Cedric for his ongoing work with the students, Jacinta Smart for her passion and expertise in the Arts and for aboriginal culture, the Maintenance Team for their preparatory work on the wall space, Almir Djemailovic from Higgins Coatings for their generous donations, and to Craig Fielke and Kerryn Simpfendorfer for their financial support.

We are incredibly excited about this legacy for the College.

SENIOR SCHOOL

Take the Stage − Drama Day at the Adelaide Festival Centre for Year 11s and 12s The Drama curriculum has changed significantly over the past two years, so CentrEd has hosted its inaugural Drama Day to try to assist senior Drama students in their investigations within the course.

This immersive experience for Stage 1 and 2 students has been developed to give the emerging actors and theatre technicians hands-on experience in some of the fundamental staging and devising techniques used within Drama.

Our 30 students spent the day in workshops in Physical Theatre and Clowning, Devising Theatre as well as Directing Theatre.

The Year 12s remained later for a deeper dive into some of the course specifics of Stage 2 which resulted in some really interesting discussions in relation to a day spent well.

Woodside Cheese Wrights Mitch Lloyd, a master cheesemaker from Woodside Cheese Wrights came to the College on Tuesday, 15 March to speak to our Year 11 Biology students and our students had the chance to make cheese. Our students had been learning about microorganisms as part of our Topic – Cells & Microorganisms.

It was a really worthwhile experience connecting with local Adelaide Hills business. This was a fabulous learning opportunity for our students and we enjoyed having this information session with him.

SENIOR SCHOOL Year 12 Art & Design Excursion Every year the Year 12 Art & Design students make the journey into the city to view several galleries to inspire and guide their own creative journey for the year and beyond College.

‘Viewing the SACE Art Show put into perspective how diverse art is amongst students our age and how incredible it was to see everybody’s development of style.’ − Ella

We began the day at the Art Gallery of South Australia, viewing the Biennale “Free State”, where contemporary artworks challenged and encouraged diversity in our thinking and understanding of the concept of ‘Art’. Many of the artworks throughout the gallery surprised us, particularly Yayoi Kusama’s installation.

The Jam Factory was our final venue, which is not a jam factory (it used to be) but an exhibition space for exceptional contemporary arts and crafts, including glass, which we were able to view in the glassblowing studio.

2022 Athletics Carnival – Sporting High Achievers The annual Inter-House Athletics Carnival was held on Friday, 11 March on Morella Oval. With a new layout of the field thanks to the Mount Barker Little Athletics Club, student participation seemed to be at an all time high. However, it was Naturi’s efforts that enabled them to add another Athletics Shield to their ranks – winning for the eighth year in a row!

Each year, every House selects two individual students to receive the House Spirit Award. This award is given to students who demonstrate commitment, sportsmanship and a positive attitude to assisting their House in a variety of ways.

The Athletics Carnival takes weeks of preparation, with a large number of people assisting to make this event possible.

David was awarded best bowler and all rounder this weekend for the U14 boys cricket at the Alexandra and Eastern Cricket Association.

Well done David.

Emily has qualified again this year for the National Age Multi-Class Swimming Championships in early April, to be held in Adelaide. In addition to qualifying for all her age group events, Emily has also qualified to swim in 4 open races. This means she will be racing alongside Paralympians from Tokyo.

Congratulations Emily and all the very best for the upcoming championships.

While living in London, UK in 2021, Heidi Fopp had a chapter of her work published for the Young Writers’ Competition, sponsored by the Arts Council of England and the University of Roehampton. Her piece follows the idea of “never trust a survivor until you find out what they did to stay alive”. The published book contains stories of identity and family history in the category theme “My Name Is…” including Heidi’s chapter.
