CORNER LODGE NEWS THE WORK BEGINS As you will have noticed, repair and redecoration work has begun! The entrance is the first area to undergo renovation.

We’re looking forward to the modernization and general sprucing up of an often-ignored area.

While this is taking place, bedrooms will be worked on as they become vacant. The home will be freshened and brightened up. This will be a big project so please be patient with us during this process.

There has been a great deal of work going on behind the scenes which will change the way we invoice, schedule staff, and maintain records of the residents and the people that have been nominated as their contacts.

While change can be stressful and time-consuming, these new systems will help us coordinate and streamline the way we do things and the services we provide. We are hopeful that the new program will allow us to email and/or text you. Think of that! No more missed calls or missing announcements posted on Facebook.

We appreciate the patience and understanding you’ve shown us.

We offer our apologies for any hiccoughs or inconvenience this may have occurred as we blend our daily duties with training and moving data into the new system.

ALL CREATURES GREAT AND SMALL On 6 May, Corner Lodge welcomed the team from Eden Oasis to delight the residents by providing a special animal experience. Be sure to visit our Facebook page to see all the photos and videos.

AFTERNOON TEA ON THE CORNER LODGE EXPRESS On 8 May, the residents celebrated the life and work of Sir Richard Attenborough on his 100th birthday with nature and animal related games, puzzles, and art.

A TASTY OUTING One bright, sunny afternoon the staff decided to escort a group of residents on a surprise outing and took a walk down Tamarisk Way to the Sunspot Business Centre here in Jaywick.

The group visited Rainy Bakes (owned and operated by Lorraine Wildes, who used to be a cook here at Corner Lodge).

While there, everyone took the opportunity to sample the treats Lorraine has on offer while enjoying the sea view.

Everyone loves a spot of afternoon tea. It’s more than just a cuppa, it’s an occasion: the patterned china, the tinkling of the teaspoon as it hits the side of the cup, the nibbles on the cake stand. It’s ceremony and a timehonoured British tradition.

It’s time to pause, cast aside the day’s worries and just let the universe be, to enjoy the experience, the warmth of the tea, the companionship of those gathered with you.

Charice plans afternoon teas as often as possible as the residents look forward to these special moments.

TRISHAW UPDATE We’ve received some good news. At first, Con thought that the electrical motor would have to be sent to Europe to be repaired. However, after a bit of good fortune, a repair shop was found in Hampshire.

We are hoping to be back on the road soon. We’ll update you on Facebook when we have confirmed dates.

BESIDE THE SEASIDE Now that the sun is out and the rain has stopped the residents are enjoying escorted walks again.

Mobile Numbers and Email Addresses Needed However, annoying it is, being contactable 24 hours a day, 7 days a week is part of modern life.

And now we’re asking you to add us to those “interruptions.”

There are quite a few of you who have not shared your mobile number and/or email address with us.

We ask for this information, not because we want to send you special offers, but we need a way to contact you in a timely manner in case of emergencies or to pass on information you need to know.

Rest assured, we would never pass your contact details to anyone without your permission.

There’s nothing like a walk along the prom to brighten your outlook, put a spring in your step, and a smile on your face.

It’s good for the muscles, gets the blood flowing, clears the lungs, increases the appetite, and helps us sleep. It’s all good.

THE MUFFIN MAN I honestly thought it was just a n occupation made-up for a nursery rhyme … but being a Muffin Man was a real job!

These men would buy muffins and crumpets from local bakeries as sell them to the public for half a penny each. They would attract customers by ringing a large bell.

Most muffin men were the young sons of bakers or retired bakers.

According to an article by the London Museum, to keep bread cheap bakers used to add chalk and alum in the dough.
