Cor Jesu’s school newspaper, The Corette, is an extra-cirricular opportunity for students to develop communication skills that allow a public forum for student expression through individual writing styles, voice, designm and photography. Four issues are digitally produced each year, but students are not required to participate on all four issues. Staff members are required to attend a general information and training meeting at the beginning of each issue. All grade levels are welcome to participate.

veryone always asks, “What is STUCO?” but the real question is, “WHO is STUCO?” Our exec team here at CJ is the backbone of all of CJ activities.

Through long hours of planning, organizing, and brain-storming, STUCO puts together some of the most memorable weeks here at CJ. Sharing school pride and spirit, exec strives for the student body’s excitement over celebrating our school.

ADDY KELLER: EXEC PRESIDENT

This year, our president strives to show the student body that the little things matter. Cor Jesu is a sisterhood and she wants each and every one of the students to feel included and welcomed. Having everyone celebrate CJ and show just how much spirit they have is what Addy does it for. She may be having loads of fun, but her main focus is for the girls of CJ. She may be the most selfless president we have ever had, dedicating countless hours to making CJ spirit thrive. When Addy first came to CJ, her main goal was to make an impact. She has not only accomplished this goal, but she has exceeded it, all while staying true and humble.

SARAH BOOCK: EXEC VICE PRESIDENT

Planning is one of Sarah’s most impressive qualities. She is a natural leader who has a drive for coordinating events. Being a part of exec seems like it was made for her. Sarah’s love for CJ is also what makes her excel in exec. She believes that the more you involve yourself, the more fun will you have.

EMILY LEIGHT: EXEC SECRETARY

Emily, also known as “the colorful emailer” has great goals for CJ. Every week, she sends a positive email out to the whole school with updates. Not only does she include the weekly schedule, but she involves the students by sending out google forms with questions and polls. Emily says that her favorite part of being on exec is seeing the student body get engaged and enjoy all the hard work she and the team did.

SOPHIA FORD: EXEC SPIRIT COMMISSIONER

Spirit Commissioner is not one for the weak. Having to tackle being on STUCO while also getting the privilege of being a caper is a lot of hard work and definitely takes strong vocal chords. Ford claims that she is “absolutely obsessed with this school” and has always wanted to be a part of exec ever since she was a freshman. Unfortunately, her idea of turning the school into one big ball pit keeps getting turned down, but she expresses loads of excitement for upcoming, top-secret events!

SOPHIA HARTMAN: EXEC TREASURER Hartman, the money maestro, is the girl who gets it done. She says that being friends with the team makes their ideas wilder, and the spirit weeks crazier. One of her favorite parts about being on exec and planning events, is hearing about how much fun the student body had. Hartman and the team feel accomplished when they have positive feedback from CJ, making them want to plan more and more for CJ students. She wants everyone to know that exec is cooking up some special events for us.

Field Hockey Wrap-Up: Seniors Bid Farewell

The Cor Jesu field hockey season ended after an absolute battle against St. Joe’s in the Final Four round of the state tournament.

Three starters all ended up in the emergency room after the final game, but despite the setbacks, each player is incredibly proud of their performance. Captain and Longwood University commit Mattea Vest ‘24 stated, “I’m really proud of the team’s success in playoffs. We fought hard in every game, especially the St. Joe game.

We may not have left the field with a win, but we got to walk away with integrity. Not every team can say that.” Vest played multiple playoff games in a cast and still managed to consistently be one of the best players on the field, cultivating a strong defensive line.

When asked about the final game, Jordan Sadler ‘24, Vest’s co-captain along with Allie Massmann ‘24, stated, “We gave our last game everything that we had. It wasn’t the outcome we wanted, but we played a fair and intense game.” Sadler then continued, “I think we always came together, especially in playoffs.

Whenever we were not having our best game or needed a reset, we were able to change the course of the game. Our determination is something that I loved about this team.” Sadler was the second leading scorer this season with 11 goals, only behind Indiana University commit Molly Stutte ‘25. Stutte’s determination was seen across the entire season, leading her to wildly impressive stats, including 26 goals and 17 assists.

After losing 10 seniors last year, some of the players were worried about the season, but their fears were quickly calmed.

Captain Allie Massmann ‘24 explained, “As a senior, I’ve realized how important bonding activities are such as kidnapping, team runs, and team breakfasts.

They are crucial to our team chemistry.

Without team chemistry, we cannot have a good season. I am so proud of how far we have come skill-wise, both individually and as a team.” The three captains have proven to be amazing leaders, players, and friends, testaments to the program’s role in shaping not only strong athletes, but also impressive young women.

“A huge motivator on the team to me is Molly. Molly works incredibly hard and has such a passion for the sport. She pushes me to be better and isn’t afraid to tell me when I’m not performing my best, which I think is good in a teammate. She also makes everything fun, always cracking jokes and bringing a positive light to every game and practice.” - Mattea Vest ‘24 Each player finds their inspiration in those around them. Sadler finds hers in her co-captains, stating, “Their work ethic is super inspiring. We all pushed each other and held each other accountable. I always wanted to do better to live up to their inspiration and reputation.” Massmann agreed, futher elaborating on Vest’s leadership skills, stating, “Mattea Vest motivates me to work harder and become a better player every day.

She is always there to push me to fix my mistakes and call me out

when I’m making them.

Without her I wouldn’t grow as a player or a teammate.” Finally, Massmann elaborated on senior defender Maggie Larrigan ‘24, who came back to field hockey this year after not playing since freshman year. Massmann described Larrigan by saying, “She always knows how to pick me up when I’m feeling discouraged. Whether it’s the positive feedback from the sidelines or a joke after a hard game, I know that I can count on her to lift my spirits.” Larrigan found her way back to the program for her senior season, excited to spend the fall with her best friends. She saw field hockey both as an outlet for stress and as a place for growth, stating, “I have learned about being disciplined rather than focusing on motivation. Even when I’m not entirely motivated to put in the work, I’ve come to be disciplined enough to continue putting in effort and giving 110%, and I see this in my teammates as well.” The senior girls have built upon their connection in years past, going from nervous freshmen at the field hockey camp in the summer of 2020 to spending their final minutes as CJFH players as united leaders on the SportPort field.

I am incredibly sad to no longer be a field hockey player here, but I am so glad that I get to take everything that I learned from the coaches with me to my next place.”

Melanie later recalls,

“I’d say there was some tough competition, people did not come to play, we all meant business”. And

while this might sound difficult, she said the worst part was the nervousness that came with waiting for the judges to choose a winner. It all ended up being worth it when the winner was finally announced.

Being an expert is not easy, but it is safe to say that Melanie Armbrecht is the one student I would trust with my wedding cake. She truly is an inspiration to many at Cor Jesu, and is representative of the large amount of talent in our community.

Myanmar’s Forgotten War

The History Between the People of Myanmar and Their Military Myanmar elections held in February 2020 were originally supposed to be a celebration of the democratic government Myanmar citizens love, as they just fought for democracy back in 2010. It looks like history in Myanmar is repeating itself once again; the Myanmar military in 2010 wanted only the military to be in dictatorship, and this happened again in 2020. The Myanmar military, also known as the Junta, said that they were being ripped off by the elections. They wanted a re-election, but the president said that it was not rigged and that they would have a democratic government because they won. The Junta were furious and they took matters into their own hands, which meant to keep the president and his cabinet hostage and to go against their people. The citizens were ready to fight back at the Junta, but with peaceful protest rather than violence.

The Protesting in Myanmar These peaceful protests would soon be interrupted by the Junta firing guns at their people. The Junta thought if they used violence against their people, then they would back down. Despite all the violence, the citizens fought back by protesting, even if it risked their lives. All of this was happening towards the end of August 2020. The violence got so bad that the Junta started spreading their crackdowns into other cities and villages, which is when everybody knew that it was not safe anymore and that they had to move.

The Latest Update Presently, the Junta are merciless and brutal. Not only are they shooting at their people, but they also are now burning down their houses and villages. When one town sees the Junta coming close, they are quick to spread the information on social media, primarily Facebook, to other villages and states so that they can prepare as well. Even through this extremely challenging time, the people of Myanmar are not willing to give up on their land or democracy easily. They help each other out by sharing what they have, even with strangers. It is hard to understand why the military wants to turn against their people. The military is supposed to protect their people from danger, but in Myanmar, the military has gone against their people and has shown no mercy towards them.

This is not the first time that the military has gone against their people in Myanmar. The dictatorship also happened back in 1962 - 2011. It is heartbreaking to know that citizens of Myanmar have fought so hard for democracy, only for it to be taken away by the military again.

My Parents’ Story My parents were born in Myanmar, so they also experienced merciless military brutality happening in their country. When I was old enough to hear how life was for them when they were in their teens and early twenties, I couldn’t help but wonder “ Why do my parents and my people have to go through this?” I was touched by my parents’ story on why they left Myanmar. Of course, I thought it was just my parents making a huge sacrifice for me to have a better future. While yes, that part was true, there were so many other reasons. My dad was a man in his early twenties, taking care of his family in a small village named Thantlang in Chin State.

Shortly after, he was recruited into the Chin National Army. My dad had to defend his state, so he left his family and trained for four months. He trained so hard with the mindset of protecting his state, his family, and his village, and with this mindset, he got to be commander of his troop. His hard work paid off, and we were rewarded with a gift and a small ceremony. Myanmar was never a rich country, so my dad was taught to be grateful for everything and be glad that God gave them everything they needed, not what they wanted. My dad said that anything God gave him was enough for him. He was not rich but had faith in God and trusted him. That is how he got through the tough times. For my mom, she was entering her early twenties and also living with her family.

She would soon have to leave with my future in mind, because she was pregnant with me. She sailed across the Andaman Sea to Malaysia. She waited for my dad to come along after he was discharged from the Chin Army.

Now they have four kids and live here in Missouri, also supporting their families in Myanmar and those who have escaped. I am here to speak for the lost voices from decades ago. I am writing this story for those who suffered and who are still suffering.

The Game is Afoot

The autumn season has finally arrived, and Cor Jesu’s annual fall play has come with it. This year’s play is based on the famous strategy board game and popular 1980s movie, Clue. Clue is set in the 1950s when six guests are invited to a dinner party, and a mystery ensues after their host is found dead. This play is a classic “whodunnit” story with bits of comedy mixed in.

What’s New? This year’s fall play is different from the past productions due to changes made in location and staff. The most important addition to Clue is the new director, Amy Top. Ms. Top’s new role as director has been the cause of many major changes that have affected both cast and crew. She played a role in making the decisions for the cast list, and she helped put her own “vision” into the show. When asked how they felt about having a new director, one crew member stated, “It was definitely difficult having a new director because she changed how we do most things, but cast and crew worked together to run the show smoothly.” Having a new director was not the only change for the fall play; Clue was performed in the auditorium instead of the Little Theater. Moving the show to the auditorium allowed the stage crew to construct more elaborate set pieces for Clue than in past shows. Despite these changes, Clue was an amazing production and an amazing display of both the cast and crew’s talents.

Clue has welcomed a lot of new cast and crew members who have been killing it with their hard work and dedication to the show. Some cast members have made a big jump from crew to cast. Grace Oliver ‘25, the unexpected cop, was asked what it was like going from crew to cast to which she said, “It’s been really exciting and nerve-racking. . . I was used to coming in during tech week and seeing a finished project, but seeing everyone starting to learn their lines from the very beginning has been really cool.” The actors did an amazing job on this show, and so much work gets put in behind the scenes.

Sound Crew has been on the show since some of the very first rehearsals because there were a lot of sound effects that went into the show. Light Crew has also found themselves learning new things this year since a projector was introduced to the show. The projector displays detailed backdrops on stage that move through a clue board during scene transitions adding a modern element to the set.

Uncovering the CJA Capers These past few weeks I interviewed the CJA Capers to get to know

them a little more, asking a series of three questions: Why did you want to become a caper? What does being a caper mean to you? What is your favorite part about being a caper? These were the answers that I gathered.

Each caper first explained that they did not get to choose their spots.

The positions were passed down/hand picked by the seniors before them. None of the girls expected to receive a cape besides our Exec Spirit Commissioner Sophia Ford, but the seniors that retired their capes picked specific girls to carry on the tradition. Sydney Ranson received her cape from Gracie Ruyle ‘23, her varsity soccer teammate.

Sydney had gotten injured during a game and had knee surgery just one day prior, and getting a cape was a highlight during a very difficult recovery process. Allie Massmann received her cape from her lifelong neighbor, teammate, and best friend Bella Uxa ‘23. The cape serves as a reminder of their bond now that Bella has moved away to college.

Even though they did not get to choose their spots in being a caper, each person said that they enjoyed being one. Sydney Ranson said “I was not expecting to be a caper, but getting the cape has been an amazing opportunity and privilege to lead the school on first Fridays and at sports events.”

I decided to ask the second question to get a deeper meaning on what the capers do and why they do it. When Mary Slinkard answered question two, she explained, “Being a caper means dedicating time and energy to spreading Cor Jesu spirit and creating a welcoming and enthusiastic environment where others want to get loud and participate in cheers!”

Allie Massmann also responded to the question by saying, “To me, being a caper means being someone who brings energy and spirit to the school.

Being a caper means to keep the tradition at CJ alive and I am so lucky to get to play such a big role in this CJ tradition.”

For the last and final question “What is your favorite part about being a caper?” a lot of the answers were the same. Addison Mcgahan said “My favorite part about being a caper is the cheers during lunch on First Fridays. Nothing beats running through the tunnel of seniors loudly yelling and proudly beating the drum. I love how involved the student body gets during cheers when we come together as a community. I remember cheering as a freshman and wondering how the seniors could yell so loudly.

Now, I get to mosh with my senior class at the end of Wigalow. I just think the tradition of First Friday cheers is so special!”

Kate Cooper also responded saying “My favorite part about being a caper is leading the cheers on First Friday. Although it is exhausting and I was both sweating and light-headed afterwards, every second was so much fun and I can’t wait to do it again!”

After all the interviews I learned so much more about our Capers. A common answer throughout each interview was that many of the girls looked up to the capers that were before them.

Ferris Bueller’s Day Off This has always been my favorite back-to-school movie, which obviously encapsulates the fall feeling. This classic John Hughes flick portrays popular high school student, Ferris Bueller, and his two friends who go to the extreme to skip a day of school and explore the city of Chicago. This movie summarizes everything it is to be a teenager and the feelings that come with balancing school and social life.

Little Women This is perhaps my personal favorite on the list, this movie never gets old!

While Greta Gerwig brought about the wonderful 2019 version, Christian Bale in the 1994 version will always hold a special place in my heart. But no matter which one you watch, Little Women is one of those stories that everyone grows up knowing. The charming story of four sisters and their different paths is both nostalgic and brand new at the same time. Due to the fact that the movie is set in Massachusetts, the setting alone gives it a “Northeastern autumn” feel.

Fast forward to August 2023; the freshmen in 2020 are now seniors starting off another school year without a song. The seniors deci ded to start a new tradition that no other class had done before. They adopted the Alma Mater as their new song and sang it proudly for the first few weeks of school.

However, there was still an unsettled feeling amongst the seniors about the disappointin g conclusion to the formation of a senior song. Some seniors resisted the creation of a new song because it seemed to be too late to finally get what they had been hoping for for the past three years. Senior Olivia Forti stated "I think that because we didn 't have a song freshman year, it wouldn't be a true senior song. It’s not the same and we can just do the Alma Mater.

Normally, the senior song is about nostalgia, but we don't have that." There were many seniors with feelings similar to Olivia, but there was also a large portion of seniors with different points of view. Senior class presiden t Makayla Lawrence shared her perspective and said, “I wanted a senior song beca use I feel that it brings our class together in a good way. To me, the senior song mea ns an act of togetherness. It’s something we all share in common besides our junior ring. I do like this tradition; I think it's beautiful.” In the end, the majority of the seni or class voted in favor of having their own song and the senior student council along with some resilient seniors decided to take action and form a new song.

Despite the controversy surrounding the senior song, the class of 2024 cheerfully debuted their senior song on September 29, 2023 during this year’s freshman welcome week. The song is sung to the tune of “We are Young” by Fun, and the lyrics portray the unique experiences and spirit of the class of 2024. It is a true testament to the 19 9 adaptability, sisterhood, and tenacity that these seniors have been able to foster during their time at CJ.
