We’ve emerged from the pandemic and shed our masks. And now, rather than wring our hands and worry about how to manage through the next day, we can look ahead and imagine the possibilities. We can also look back at the dreams and goals interrupted, apply what we’ve learned, adapt to our current reality and reimagine. In the pages of this publication, we invite you to join us as we celebrate the accomplishments of the last 12 months and look forward to the year ahead.

LETTER FROM THE President
My Dear Cor Jesu Community, What a joy it is to write those words as I draft my first letter to this community as president of Cor Jesu Academy!
I have had the privilege of studying or serving at my beloved alma mater nearly every decade since the 1970s. As you can imagine, the school looks quite a bit different than it did when I was a student.
Our footprint has evolved to include additional classrooms, office space, performance areas and a beautiful gymnasium. And after 10 years of discussion, design, and, yes, a little reimagination, we are growing our campus again, with the renovation and modernization of our Chapel (p. 10).
Cor Jesu has expanded not just in square footage, but in capacity. We boast larger numbers and welcome students from far more zip codes in the metro area than we did in the mid-70s. Those students come to us with different and more pressing needs, both financially and educationally. We are grateful to meet those needs both with scholarship and services.
We also recognize the opportunities we have to continue to introduce new students to our mission. This summer, with the help of the Boniface Foundation, we welcomed our first RISE summer program participants. Over the course of their six weeks with us, I had the privilege of watching these girls fall in love with Cor Jesu, guided by so many of you — the student, teacher, alumnae and community volunteers who shared with them the Love of the Heart of Christ.
Whether you supported Cor Jesu through RISE or the Auction, with time, talent or treasure this year, thank you. You made the achievements and milestones detailed in this report possible. I have been a student, a teacher and an administrator at Cor Jesu Academy. I have taken great pride in each title because I take such great pride in you. I am thrilled to serve as the third president of Cor Jesu Academy, and work alongside you to imagine the best for our future.
Blessings,
Sr. Susan Marie Krupp, ASCJ ‘76 Cor Jesu Academy President

LETTER FROM THE Chair EMERITA
Dear Cor Jesu Community,
It seems so fitting that the theme of this Annual Report is “Reimagine.” For the last eight years, I’ve had the privilege of serving as the first alumna Chair of the Cor Jesu Academy Advisory Board, and now I have the privilege of turning leadership over to another wonderful alumna. I am excited to share that Laurie Hunsicker Phillips ‘88 has accepted the role. Laurie outlines her vision for the future of Cor Jesu Academy in a letter later in this publication (p. 35), and I’m grateful to express my appreciation on this page.
Over the last year, we have raised more than $3 million for Cor Jesu Academy. That’s $3 million to shape the lives of our incredible students. We distributed more than $2 million in financial aid across more than half of our student body, and continue to lead the way in financial aid awards among Catholic girls’ high schools in St. Louis. We have completed construction on
a parking lot and are beginning a complete renovation of our Chapel. All those accomplishments came in the last year. Since I began my tenure as Chair, we’ve distributed approximately $11.5 million in financial aid, built the Gym and Commons, completed two strategic plans, joined together to raise money at eight Auctions (two of them virtual), survived a pandemic and welcomed three presidents. We’ve laughed together at reunions and celebrated Liturgy on First Fridays.
I graduated from Cor Jesu in 1978, but I never really left — and I never really will! I am excited to continue to serve this amazing school through Board committees and as transitional support for Laurie. Thank you for making this job such a pleasure — for continuing to give generously and Share the Love of the Heart of Christ so freely.
Sincerely,
Tina Burniski Klocke ‘78 Chair Emerita, Cor Jesu Academy Advisory Board

Guests of Honor
At two points in the last year, Cor Jesu had the privilege of welcoming two distinguished guests, both from Rome: Sr. Laura Mazzoleni, ASCJ, General Treasurer for the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, and Mother Miriam Cunha Sobrinha, ASCJ, Superior General of the congregation.
Both guests received a special tour of campus with our admissions team and student ambassadors. During Mother Miriam’s visit, the school welcomed her with a beautiful assembly and prayer service. The assembly began with a student procession of flags — one flag to represent each country in which the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus are present. After the procession, there was words of welcome and some prayer, followed by a handful of student speakers who shared how they have been touched by the Charism of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart, and how they see this Charism lived out each day at Cor Jesu.
To close, the school presented Mother Miriam with two checks: one for the Apostle mission in Benin, Africa, and the other for the new Apostle mission that is currently underway in Ghana. Cor Jesu is proud to be a mission of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus and is grateful for the opportunity to support other Apostle missions around the world. It was a blessing to share Christ’s love with these inspiring women and show off the best of Cor Jesu!

Reimagining the Future
What’s the thing they say about change? That it’s the only constant?
“And constant it has been!” laughed Sr. Susan Marie Krupp, ASCJ ‘76, president of Cor Jesu Academy.
Sr. Susan Marie stepped into her presidency on July 1, 2023, and into a building meeting for the Chapel and parking lot that very same week.

“It’s amazing to see what’s on the horizon,” she said. “Though, I’ve been here long enough to know we didn’t get to this point without several steps forward and almost as many back.”
She’s referring to the process of expanding Cor Jesu’s Chapel, and making it a more inspiring place of worship for the community.
Over the years, the Chapel has been envisioned and modified, the scope of the project expanded and, most recently, reigned in.
“We received a generous seed gift for this project years ago,” said Katie Magee Theimann ’81, Director of Leadership Giving. “We’re so excited to be able to honor the intention of that gift and the many others that have been given in the years since.”
During the 2023-2024 academic year, the school will (finally!) celebrate the groundbreaking of what is expected to be named the Blessed Clelia Chapel. It will occupy the space currently dedicated to the existing chapel, but will ultimately look far different.
Advisory Board member Kevin Kloster has worked closely with Hastings+Chivetta, the architect on the project.
“It will be a beautiful place of worship, that’s for sure,” he said. “We will be expanding the footprint and completely changing the orientation of the space.”
The altar, currently to the right as you enter the Chapel, will be front and center, visible from the hallway through a pair of clear glass doors. A clerestory roof will maximize the amount of light that can enter the space — a big change from its current state.
“We’re working on the details as they relate to features and furnishings,” Sr. Susan Marie said. “We want to act in a financially responsible way, while also creating a beautiful place of worship that will inspire generations of students.”
The Chapel is just the latest piece in a much larger movement to
continuously modernize Cor Jesu’s campus. This summer, crews completed construction of a new parking lot that will make it possible for every student with a car to park on campus.
“A parking lot may not sound like an exciting project, but you should have seen the celebration in our offices when it was finally complete!” Sr. Susan Marie said. For years, Sam’s Steakhouse has graciously allowed students to park in its lot. But removing the walk down Gravois is a welcome change.
“We’re so grateful to open these spots not just to our students, but also to our current and prospective families, friends and alumnae who visit our campus for events every year,” Katie added.
As for the space around that new parking lot (located on the west side of the building), the administrative team at Cor Jesu is hard at work determining what’s next.
Sr. Susan Marie is working with Board members and Strategic Plan co-chairs Laurie Hunsicker Phillips ’88 and Lauren Schwartze Wanner ’05 to initiate a master planning process that looks at Cor Jesu’s next ten years, guided by the strategic plan completed in 2023.
“I am a proud alumna of this beautiful school, and I know a lot has changed since I graduated,” said Sr. Susan Marie. “I am excited to embrace that change and grow this campus into a space that honors our roots while maintaining our status as a premier Catholic girls’ school in St. Louis.”

the Cor Jesu Academy Athletics Brand
The following article is reprinted with the permission of Atomicdust, the branding agency which shepherded Cor Jesu through our overall branding exercise, as well as the one outlined in the following article. Please note, when we initiated the Charger branding exercise with Atomicdust, we were focused on athletics. However, the results of the research process made it clear that the new logo/branding may have a much broader appeal. So, what is referred to as an “athletics rebrand” in the context of this article, we ended up approaching as more of a global student life rebrand, dubbing the new logo, the “Charger” logo to be used for all student activities. See page 19 for examples of how the Charger branding has been implemented in a variety of student activities.

16 | FY 2022-23 DATES: JULY 1, 2022-JUNE 30, 2023
For many of our clients, branding is personal.
We often meet with clients who have worked at the company for decades or had ties to the organization since childhood. This sort of personal investment leads to emotional attachment — and for better or worse, the organization’s brand becomes their world.
Our team is brought in when for some reason, that brand just isn’t working any more. Maybe it’s just been a while since the brand has evolved, or perhaps the company has evolved but the brand hasn’t kept up. It’s our job to shape the brand into something that feels right again.
That’s exactly what happened earlier this spring when our friends at Cor Jesu Academy reached out.
Back to school.
Our branding team had worked with Cor Jesu the year before, developing an updated brand for the private, all-girls, college preparatory school. Building on their reputation for superior academics, we’d collaborated with Cor Jesu to create brand language and visuals that communicate its commitment to developing well-rounded students through extracurriculars, athletics, career readiness, spirituality and, yes, superior academics.
The Cor Jesu community — students, staff, families and alumnae — was loving the school’s new brand: the bold colors, focus on being brilliant and bright, and dynamic visuals that pulled it all together. Now it was the athletics department that wanted a brand refresh. Formal branding for the various teams and clubs had never been established, and there was little consistency in the design of things like game
promotions, posters and uniforms. Cor Jesu’s teams had achieved big things and the community wanted to rally around them. They just didn’t have much to align behind. But there was a name — and a horse.
Making a mascot.
As we interviewed students, alumnae, coaches and faculty, we heard one thing over and over again: “Please don’t take away the Charger.”
What’s a Charger? Many didn’t know. It was a bolt of lightning — kind of. It was a horse — kind of. Over the years, the meaning behind the Charger name had faded. But the horse remained.
The school’s mascot was a large goofy horse, rumored to have been inspired by the Clydesdales at Grant’s Farm, which neighbors the school’s campus. A staple at pep rallies and games, the horse was beloved by everyone. The horse had no name, and while it had come to be synonymous with a Charger, the people we spoke to said they wanted imagery besides the horse to represent the school’s teams. They had another request, too. They didn’t want the athletics brand to be overly feminine (no “Lady Chargers”) or too masculine (no intimidating looking medieval horses with a spear).
Above all, they wanted a brand — and various expressions — that would unite the Cor Jesu community. After many of the school’s traditions had been halted or altered by the pandemic, students needed new ways to show school spirit. But with decades of alumnae and families who had emotional ties to Cor Jesu’s existing athletics brand, whatever we created needed to maintain its legacy. We needed to push the brand forward, while being careful not to push it too much.

WHAT IS A CHARGER?
A Charger has the spirit of a blazing stampede.
A Charger has the brilliance of a bolt of lightning.
A Charger has the strength of a raging storm.
Lightning strikes.
Our team didn’t have to look far for inspiration.
The school’s new tagline, “Shine bright. Be brilliant.” had the energy and excitement we were looking for. We created a lightning bolt to represent the teams’ electric energy. Combining the bold graphic with collegiate-inspired type for a school monogram, the design is fit for a modern teenager and easily carried across the athletic world, from a sea of rally towels to jerseys, swim caps and team patches.
Creative expressions include language to ignite fans and athletes alike, strengthen the meaning behind the Charger name and renew its connection to the mascot, because we wanted the horse to still play a lead role in the brand. And we gave the mascot a fitting name: Bolt.
Our team designed patches representing each sport, examples of how the brand can live on uniforms, and even some fun merch.
We even created a shirt for the mascot to wear, tying the two concepts (a horse and lightning bolt) together even more.
Ready. Set. Charge!
The school year started, and at the first pep rally of the semester, the athletics department unveiled the new brand.
For the Cor Jesu Chargers — the athletes, coaches, families and fans — the new brand is personal. And it should be; it represents the community’s strength, spirit and long list of achievements. We were honored to create a brand that they’ll wear and support proudly for years (and potentially decades) to come.

While each Endowed Scholarship is tracked individually, all Cor Jesu Endowment funds are invested together, to realize the benefits of a larger investment pool.
The assets are invested in a fully-diversified portfolio and are part of a disciplined investment program overseen by Cor Jesu’s Endowment Committee. Scholarships are provided by the distributions made from the investment portfolio.
Scholarship eligibility at Cor Jesu is determined by a need-based assessment through FACTS Management.

“You are making it possible for me to go to Cor Jesu. THANK YOU! Here’s the funny part: my mom and dad were born in 1970. It makes me feel like God meant this to be a ‘family’ connection. That will make it easier for me to remember whose donations made this possible — and that will make it easier for me to remember you with gratitude in prayer during my time at CJ. This scholarship means a lot to me, because it means I will be able to attend Cor Jesu with my sister, which I have always dreamed of doing.”

Remembering Thom Digman
With the publication of this Annual Report, we remember in a special way a man who gave so much to Cor Jesu Academy.
Thom Digman spent his career in advancement, working with several Catholic not-for-profits and with Jesuit ministries. He became involved with Cor Jesu in large part thanks to his wife, Jo-Ann Klebusch Digman ‘74. In the early 2000s, he became a mentor to Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ, guiding her as she launched Cor Jesu’s advancement program. Throughout the subsequent two decades, he would serve as a Board member and Board Chair, sounding board and advisor to
the school’s leadership team. He helped lead the charge in the acquisition of land that expanded Cor Jesu’s footprint on Gravois Road and, in his last role, served as a member of the Shine Forward Campaign Committee. Though, he would probably cite “Cor Jesu Dad,” as his most cherished title in that time — his daughter, Libby Digman, graduated in 2014. In his final years, he delighted in sharing that not only had Libby returned to CJA to coach racquetball, but his daughter-in-law, Bea
Digman, was coaching the tennis team.
Thom was a living example of grace and humility. Because of this, many may not have known the full scope of his impact on Cor Jesu Academy; but this campus and the people inside it will be forever changed and forever grateful for his commitment to Sharing the Love of the Heart of Christ.

A RISING Community
June 5 started with a bubble machine, plenty of music, and joy emanating from the faculty and staff members greeting 22 rising 7th grade girls as they hopped off the Cor Jesu shuttle. But the girls were quiet.
“There were several girls who barely said a word on the first day,” remembered Rita Thoopul, Director of the RISE program. “They just had this deer-in-the-headlights look, like, ‘What did I get myself into here?’”
They had gotten themselves into RISE, a tuition-free middle school academic and leadership development program, designed to strengthen learning and development for students from low-income level households.
Development of RISE dates back to 2021 when Cor Jesu faculty and staff members were searching for ways to expand the school’s mission.
“We felt Cor Jesu had created a great program to support students who want to pursue a premier Catholic education,” said Dr. Meghan Bohac, Dean of Academics at Cor Jesu, referring to the Blessed Clelia Scholarship program.
“However, when we took an honest look at the Blessed Clelia Scholars and their high school experience, we realized we were doing everything we could to support them financially in high school, but to truly set these young women up for success, we needed to broaden our scope.”
The administrative and advancement teams investigated existing programs. They found great examples of programs developed for boys, like the Hurtado Scholars at Rockhurst High School in Kansas City and REACH at Regis High School in New York. They leaned on the findings of a collaborative study from a St. Louis-based organization, the Boniface Foundation. The study focused on how to improve secondary and post-secondary success for students of need in values and faith-based middle schools. The results highlighted academic and social/emotional interventions that could improve outcomes — if initiated in the middle school years. The conclusion was clear:
FEATURE
30
“In order to expand our mission, we had to expand what we offered,” Dr. Bohac said.
So Cor Jesu developed the curriculum for a first-of-its-kind, three-year program, exclusively for girls. The program would span three summers and include bi-weekly Saturday sessions during the school year. The Boniface Foundation agreed to fund the first two years of the program and consider additional funding after that point, provided the data and metrics indicate positive outcomes in the academic performance of RISE participants. After a year of curriculum development, logistics and recruitment, Rita Thoopul began to write RISE’s first chapter in June 2023. True to Cor Jesu, she started with prayer and food.
“On day one, Mr. [Larry] Russell grilled us his special Hebrew National hotdogs and our mentors made us mac and cheese at lunch,” she said. After they worked through their first-day butterflies, the students settled into the RISE routine.
Each day began with prayer, followed by Math, Science and English Language Arts classes. The students divided into three groups, cycling through the subjects to ensure an individualized learning experience. The curriculum included lectures and discussions, while also incorporating new experiences for some students, such as working with lab equipment and creative writing assignments — many even jumped at the opportunity to read their pieces aloud to the class.
“Middle schoolers are so open with their joy,” Rita shared. “Each time they succeed, the excitement is right there, visibly in front of you!”
With high-energy middle schoolers, it was important for the program to have balance. The morning curriculum was more traditional, focusing on the core subject areas. The afternoons were less traditional, with activities geared toward developing soft skills such as self-confidence, active listening, teamwork and public speaking.

**Breakfast and lunch were provided each day.
CJA faculty member, Trish Molnar, led the leadership development portion of the afternoon sessions.
"It was an extremely active learning environment,” Trish said. “We used group activities to teach skills for everyday life. One day, we even did an Escape Room activity. It taught the girls how to work as a team, listen to one another, problem-solve, look beyond the surface and so much more.” The leadership sessions also incorporated confidence-building activities, presentation skills, as well as how to develop a growth mindset.
“The growth mindset was a key part of the summer,” Trish said. “We wanted these students to learn that when they hit a roadblock in life, there are options to get around it. We taught them to look at things in new ways and helped them build the confidence to never give up.” Additionally, many afternoons featured guest speakers. Some spoke about their careers, some about different paths you can take after high school and some shared about personal passions. CJA faculty member, Jen Ahrens ‘87, dove into the realm of space, captivating the students with an exhilarating stomp rocket experiment. Allison Gray shared about fashion and design, allowing students to flex their creative muscles by crafting beaded bracelets.
Students painted, participated in yoga, completed entrepreneurship projects, sang together, and created vision boards portraying how they see themselves, along with their goals for the future. They learned study skills — a portion of the afternoon taught by CJA alumna and practicum student, Claire Heggie ‘19. They even went on field trips to Grant’s Farm, the Old Cathedral, Meramec Caverns and Grant’s View Library.
“The RISE afternoon sessions were crucial for the success of the program,” Rita said. “While the academic piece is important, it was still summertime for these girls, so the afternoons provided a space for them to discover and embrace their identities as young women in a holistic way.” They ended the summer much like they started it — with prayer and a meal. But this time, the students’ families joined, some even bringing their own dishes
32
to share. And this time, the girls weren’t so quiet. They weren’t even nervous. They were home.
“Seeing the growth of the students from the first day of RISE to the closing ceremony with their families was so moving,” Trish said. “We had girls who refused to speak in front of the class in the beginning transform into beautiful presenters who were so proud to be on the microphone sharing about their summer. It was spectacular!”
After just six weeks together, the RISE students became a tight-knit group, like family. They even created their own mission statement:
• We are a team of Middle School Girls inspired by receiving and sharing the Heart of Jesus!
• We celebrate our differences while finding joy in our common dedication to positive habits, spiritual, academic, emotional, social and physical growth.
• We embrace and nurture our gifts so that we may spread them out to the greater St. Louis community.
“This summer was all about building community,” Rita shared. “At Cor Jesu, we’re very relationship driven, so it was extremely rewarding to build relationships with these students and their families, as well as watch them form friendships and support each other.”
And the best part is…it’s not over yet.
The RISE program continues with bi-weekly Saturday sessions throughout the school year and students will return for another six-week summer session as rising 8th graders. Joining them will be the next class of rising 7th graders, which is already being actively recruited.
It all starts with a nomination…
To enter RISE, students must be nominated by a teacher, guidance counselor, principal, pastor or director of religious education. Nominations are due Friday, December 1.

LETTER FROM THE CURRENT
Advisory Board Chair
Dear Cor Jesu Community,
I graduated from CJA in 1988. Though I have returned many times over the last 35 years, there was something a little extra special when I walked through the doors for my class reunion this last summer. I knew I would be taking on the role of Advisory Board Chair, and at such a critical time for Cor Jesu and the landscape of Catholic education. I looked around with a renewed sense of anticipation and excitement.
I am not new to leadership within this community. I have served on the Board for eight years, working most closely with the Advancement and Finance Committees. Most recently, I had the privilege of co-chairing the strategic planning process. I look forward to working with Sr. Susan Marie as she and the administrative team outline the action items of the plan’s six pillars. With Sr. Susan Marie settling into her role as President, and with our Deans, Meghan and Kathleen, having one full year of experience in their roles, I look forward to leading the Board
OLIVIA WECKHERLIN ’27, CLASS OF 1988 SCHOLARSHIP
as we listen and learn about how we can best support, guide and advise on what the students, the school and the community need from Cor Jesu.
I wholeheartedly believe this community — the larger community — needs Cor Jesu. We need a place that continues to mold strong young women into faithful leaders. We need a safe place where these curious and excited young minds and hearts can grow. The world has changed so much since I graduated. And while Cor Jesu continues to adapt to the needs of our students, who we are at our core remains the same. Cor Jesu truly shaped the person I am today. I am blessed to return in this capacity. Sacred Heart of Jesus, I place my trust in You!
Sincerely,
Laurie Hunsicker Phillips ‘88 Advisory Board Chair (current)
“Thank you so much for the generous gift of the scholarship made available to me! The scholarship makes it much more possible for me to attend Cor Jesu Academy. Specifically, it allows me to continue to learn and grow in a strong, faith-filled community through my high school years.”

Members of the Blessed Clelia Legacy Society have chosen to name Cor Jesu Academy in their estate plans, through wills, trusts, life income gifts, retirement plans, life insurance policies or other means. Gifts provide support for current and future Chargers.
Bequests to Cor Jesu can be for a specific amount, for the percentage of an estate, or for all or a portion of what remains after other bequests have been distributed.
Cor Jesu invites participants in the Society to direct the use of the funds they will one day contribute. An unrestricted gift gives the school the flexibility to assign the gift based on areas of greatest need; a restricted gift ensures the donation will be distributed according to the benefactor’s wishes, whether that’s to immediate financial aid, the endowment, capital projects or specific programs.
An estate gift of $50,000 or more can carry the name of the donor or that of a loved one on an endowed scholarship. What a way to build a legacy!

“I am so grateful that I get the opportunity to attend Cor Jesu, and without your generosity that would not be possible. I could not imagine myself not attending Cor Jesu. I have gained so many new friends, met tons of amazing teachers, grown in my education and grown through my faith.”
