Inspirations
It’s no secret that the 2020-2021 school year wasn’t a normal one. We all learned to “smile with our eyes,” operate online meeting software and adapt when plans inevitably changed at the last minute. Through the adversity, though, we found so much inspiration within this community. With this report, we wish to thank you for inspiring us – with your creativity, generosity, ingenuity and willingness to pivot. Your commitment to CJA is a blessing!

LETTER FROM THE President
Dear Cor Jesu Community,
This time last year, I recall thinking ahead to now, wondering how we would remember the 2020-2021 school year. We were in the midst of a half-virtual school year, talking through masks and trying to project our voices through plexiglass partitions.
Little did I know that one year later, I would describe 2020-2021 as nothing less than inspirational. Despite constantly evolving circumstances, restrictions and quarantines, parents and teachers rallied to support the young women of Cor Jesu through the tumult. Our staff exercised every creative muscle they could to create meaningful virtual events. And you, our generous community, gave in ways that have left us marveling, still. With families facing economic uncertainty, we shifted all fundraising to focus on Annual Fund, our primary source of financial aid. With the help of Giving Tuesday and our Auction Fund-a-Need, we raised approximately $700,000 in unrestricted donations for the year. Meanwhile, our endowment topped $11 million, further ensuring the stability of this wonderful institution.
And then there was the development of the program I’m most grateful to introduce: the Blessed Clelia Scholarship Program. The Blessed
Clelia Scholarship Program is designed to be a true manifestation of our mission and charism by making a Cor Jesu education available to any academically-qualified young woman, regardless of her ability to pay. Buoyed by the recurring commitment of seven donors, we welcomed five members to the Class of 2025 whose tuition, fees and experiences will be covered under the umbrella of this scholarship. I invite you to learn more on page 8.
Throughout the last year, I have found myself frequently turning to one of my favorite quotes by Blessed Clelia Merloni, foundress of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus: “God visits us every day with so many lights, with so many inspirations of his grace.”
Never have those words rung more true than in the last year. Thank you for sharing your light – your inspiration – with Cor Jesu.
Sincerely in Christ,
Sr. Mary Grace Walsh, ASCJ, Ph.D. Cor Jesu Academy President

LETTER FROM THE Chair
Dear Friends,
The saying goes, “When God closes a door, he also opens a window.” This past year, we have all faced closed doors –many of them. But I cannot help but recognize the many, many windows that have opened at Cor Jesu Academy, thanks to the generosity of our community. When students could only be on campus every other day, Cor Jesu’s robust technology program kept them connected to their education and to their community. When lunchtime required extra precaution with plexiglass dividers – Cor Jesu made it happen. When families financially impacted by the pandemic needed more assistance than usual to keep their daughters at Cor Jesu, generous donations to the Annual Fund, combined with the draw on the growing endowment, made it possible to meet those needs. And when our students, faculty and staff needed a boost during a trying school year, your prayers lifted them up. Windows upon windows opened.
Our students may not see it now, but in time, they will understand the difference the larger Cor Jesu community made this past year. As I look through these windows and into the future of Cor Jesu Academy, I can see that it is extremely bright.
It is my honor to announce that during the 2020-2021 fiscal year, which ended June 30, 2021, you gifted or pledged $2.2 million to Cor Jesu. With these gifts, you are supporting capital projects, school programs, the Endowment Fund, operations and financial assistance. This total, combined with the interest earned from the Endowment Fund, has enabled Cor Jesu to award $2.16 million in financial assistance to 271 well-deserving students during this school year.
On behalf of the Advisory Board, thank you for your continued support of Cor Jesu Academy. We can never know how or when a door will close, but we are grateful to know that the support of our community will always be there to open windows for the young women of our school. We are inspired by your kindness, and vow to continue educating our students to Share the Love of the Heart of Christ with the world, just as you continue to share Christ’s love with Cor Jesu, year after year. Thank you, and God bless you.
Sincerely,
Tina Burniski Klocke ‘78 Chair, Cor Jesu Academy Advisory Board

A Future of Inspiration
FEATURE
8 | FY 2020-21 DATES: JULY 1, 2020-JUNE 30, 2021
In 2020, 154 students began their freshman year as Chargers. Of those 154, more than half received financial aid, with an average award around $10,000 – thanks to the generosity of a family that decided to conduct what they called an “experiment.” What would happen if finances were no object? What if a parent could look at their daughter and say, “If you want to go to Cor Jesu, money will not be an issue.”
Peggy McGrath Terrio ‘83 was inspired.
“I felt like this was such an outstanding opportunity for students and parents,” she said. “I know there are young women out there that have all the potential in the world, but may not have the resources to attend a school like Cor Jesu.”
She committed $200,000 over four years to a similar opportunity for the Class of 2025.
Carl and Suzanne Kuebler also pledged their financial support. Their two daughters graduated from Cor Jesu, Samantha in 2018 and Anne Marie in 2021.
“People need access,” Carl said when asked why they chose to give an immediate gift toward financial aid. “We want to be able to provide the opportunity for young women to reach their potential.”
In total, by the time financial aid applications were due, seven donors had pledged or donated a total of $500,000 in scholarship funds to be distributed over four years.
“What happened next can only amount to God’s hand,” Cor Jesu President Sr. Mary Grace Walsh, ASCJ, Ph.D. remembered. When families complete the financial aid forms, a third-party system generates a recommendation for financial aid based solely on the numbers. In the case of the Class of 2025, five students demonstrated need for full scholarship. Taking into account tuition, fees and other expenses, that totals
approximately $25,000 per year, per student. Multiplied across five students, it amounts to $500,000 over four years.
“Looking at the numbers, it was clear,” Sr. Mary Grace said. “We would offer full scholarships to those five students.”
And thus, the Blessed Clelia Scholarship Program, which had existed in a less-structured way as the fully-endowed scholarship program for students, was created.
The scholarship itself would cover tuition and fees, uniforms, books, a lunch card, activities – and all ancillary expenses that contribute to the Cor Jesu experience, something donors universally supported.
“Part of a Cor Jesu education is not just classroom work, but being able to attend mother-daughter or fatherdaughter functions, and dances, such a junior ring or prom,” Peggy said. “All the girls should have the chance to experience what Cor Jesu has to offer.”
Each of the recipients would be supported by a team led by Sr. Mary Grace, with a single point of contact in the Career, College & Wellness Center (CCW).
“It was imperative to us that these young women not feel like they were having to explain their situation at every turn,” said Sr. Mary Grace.
CORJESU.ORG | 9
Also important, that they felt as though they were contributing to their education.
“We are so inspired by Marian Middle School,” Sr. Mary Grace said. “They follow the Nativity-Miguel model, wherein each family contributes a small amount monthly to the student’s education. It gives them a sense of participation, lessening any burden imposed by the notion of charity.”
Calling it the Blessed Clelia Scholarship Program came naturally.
“When Blessed Clelia was alive, education was a privilege reserved for those who could afford it,” explained Sr. Mary Grace. “A Cor Jesu education is a privilege, but this program makes it attainable."
With the overarching details of the program settled, the team (which includes representatives from Advancement, Mission and Charism, and Admissions, in addition to Sr. Mary Grace and the CCW) moved on to the mechanics of notifying the scholars.
“I didn’t want there to be any gap between acceptance and notification. No parent should have their excitement over their daughter’s acceptance to Cor Jesu dampened by the fear of not being able to afford it.” Sr. Mary Grace’s position on that matter was firm.
Acceptance emails went to families at 3 p.m. on February 5, 2021. Sr. Mary Grace personally emailed each of the families identified for the Blessed Clelia Scholarship Program within 30 minutes. Parents began responding with their enthusiasm and gratitude that same day.
“Another beautiful side effect of these recurring gifts is their impact on the rest of our financial aid budget,” Sr. Mary Grace explained. “That $125,000 each year is separate from our overall financial aid budget. So we’re meeting the needs of these five individuals while at the same time freeing up dollars from the Annual Fund and Endowment to distribute among the rest of our
applicant pool, enabling us to meet even more of the need across the board.”
That impact was part of what appealed to the Kueblers, who have also given generously to Cor Jesu’s Endowment Fund.
“The impact of the Endowment is the income generated over time,” Carl said. “We wanted to also have an immediate impact.”
Sr. Mary Grace describes the program as “money in, money out” – and she hopes the money in continues to grow so the money given out can expand as well.
Those who are making the program possible agree.
“We want this to continue to expand access,” Carl said of his hopes for the future. “We have five scholars in the Class of 2025. I hope we are able to grow that to 20 or 30 in the next 5 to 10 years.”
Just as the donors who made this initial group of Blessed Clelia Scholarship recipients possible drew inspiration from the donors to the Class of 2024, they hope this program inspires others to give, as well.
“We have an obligation as Catholics to help others,” Carl said. “For us, this is how we care for our neighbors and help where we can. Education is a powerful way for people to achieve, and the gifts we’re making now provide young women the opportunity to decide the trajectory of their lives.”
“I would like to see as many eligible young women as possible have the same advantage I did,” Peggy echoed. “Cor Jesu gives young women an outstanding environment in which they can feel like they are capable of learning and doing anything they want to in life.”
And that’s where they feel the real inspiration lies: in the future – in the students who will be a testament to the power of education; to the power of these generous donations.

A Piece of Their Journey
Time. Talent. Treasure. The Catholic Church teaches us early and often—if we can give one, we’re doing our part. Jen Ahrens ‘87 manages to balance all three.
Jen dreamed of becoming a teacher since she was a little girl and fulfilled that dream at Cor Jesu in the fall of 2002. She worked hard as a CJA student; she works just as a hard as a CJA teacher.
“This place (Cor Jesu) made me ready for everything else. Notre Dame was no big deal after going to high school at Cor Jesu,” Jen says of her college alma mater. “The education is so strong, and I remember the expectations were very high for us, and that’s what my students see in my classroom now. I make them work really hard.”
Jen’s first year on the job she taught world history to freshmen and theology to seniors. Over the years, her resume has expanded to include freshman, sophomore and senior theology, law, U.S. history, world history and even a history of space flight elective for a couple of years.
“I love teaching all kinds of different courses because as a teacher, I love learning, too,” Jen says. “That’s why most people become teachers, because they love to learn and are curious people.”
Not only does Jen work hard to challenge her students in the classroom, but she spends a significant amount of time educating Cor Jesu girls through clubs and co-curricular activities.
As a student, Jen served as the president of the National Honor Society (NHS), and now has been the

for the past 20 years. She has coached over 40 mock trial teams, with many of them competing in State over the years. Jen is a speech team coach, as well as the moderator of the space club, history club and bocce club. She even started the curling club in 2017. And in her “spare time,” she plays a major role in organizing Honors Convocation. Plus, she has been the trip coordinator for almost all of the student summer trips to Europe since 2008.
“It’s a lot of time, but I love being involved and seeing these young women be strong and passionate about things that are outside of the classroom,” Jen says. Jen says she can operate at this breakneck speed because she so passionately wants to inspire students to excel and give them opportunities to shine.
“If the kids want a club or team and are excited about it, and all they need is a moderator to make it happen, then my answer is always ‘Yes!’” she says. And even if Jen isn’t involved as the moderator or coach, she makes it a priority to attend and support the students at their games, concerts, performances and other important activities.
“As teachers, what we want to accomplish for these girls doesn’t fit in a regular school day,” Jen says. “We work hard on our lessons, but also spend time moderating clubs, going on trips, and cheering the students on so we can enable them to try new things, to succeed, to grow and to challenge themselves.”
In addition to advancing Cor Jesu’s future through her work directly with the students, Jen has been a consistent, often quiet benefactor of the school. She began giving back in the early 90’s, as soon as she graduated from Notre Dame. Through the years, she has consistently donated to building additions, the Endowment Fund and financial aid, as well as the auction—because she wants Cor Jesu to continue to thrive and remain accessible for all families.
“What you can do, you should do,” Jen notes. “I want to be involved in creating the future in any way that I can, and at CJ that means both building up the students and building up structures for the students to use to succeed.”
If you ask Jen, Cor Jesu is unique because it graduates strong, articulate and incredibly passionate people, who “belong at the table,” in whatever capacity they choose.
“It makes sense for me to give my time, talent and treasure to Cor Jesu because it’s worthy, and I admire these girls and all they accomplish in life,” Jen says.
“To be a piece of their journey is the best legacy I can be a part of.”
“Your kindness helped me know that God wanted me to attend Cor Jesu. Thank you so much for your generous donation to help my family afford an outstanding education.”

Historically, members of the Heart-to-Heart Society have been alumnae who have chosen to make an automatic recurring gift to their Class Scholarship Fund.
Over the years, our generous donors – alumnae, parents and friends, alike – have expressed an increasing desire to support accessibility, ensuring all academically-qualified young women who wish to attend Cor Jesu will find the financial support they need to receive the education they desire. In keeping with that mentality, we are opening wide the doors to our Heart-to-Heart Society, extending membership to include ALL individuals who choose to give a recurring gift to Cor Jesu. Alumnae gifts will continue to support Class Scholarship Funds, while gifts from parents and friends will be applied to the Annual Fund (unless otherwise specified). Cheryl Dust Sullivan ‘98
I remember how exciting it was when I learned I was accepted into Cor Jesu, but also how worried I was because I had no idea how my family would afford the tuition for four years. Being the fifth born in a family with seven kids, there was certainly not a lot of extra money. I knew my going to Cor Jesu would cause a financial strain for my parents. I was so relieved when I learned tuition assistance was available to help alieviate some of the strain.
As an adult, I have chosen to be a part of the Heart-to-Heart Society so I can give back and help other CJA students financially. I am not in a financial position to give a lot, but I give what I can and I give every month. I know that what I donate and what others donate combines to have great impact on current and future students.
I learned so many wonderful lessons at Cor Jesu, some of the most important being to always have faith that I can do anything through God who strengthens me, to lend a helping hand to those in need, and to dedicate myself to only a couple activities at any given time so I can fulfill my responsibilities whole-heartedly. These lessons have impacted my life so much and have helped me become the person, wife, mother, daughter, sibling, friend and nurse I am today.
Without the faith that I can do anything through God who strengthens me, I wouldn’t be who I am and where I am today. So many times in my life I just wanted to say, “I give up,” but then His comforting and supportive presence, often experienced through the kindness, compassion and encouragement of others, gave me the strength to keep on keeping on.
Lending a helping hand to others is what makes this world a better place, and more people doing their part means a better place for future generations. I teach this lesson to my two daughters through my actions and encourage them to do the same when opportunities arise. Had this lesson not been so internalized during my formative years (thanks to my parents, CJA faculty and staff, and other important adults in my life) I wouldn’t feel as confident as I do sharing this lesson with my daughters.
I remember Sr. Sheila O’Neill, ASCJ telling the students the importance of choosing only a couple activities at any given time so we can dedicate the time and effort needed to fulfill the responsibilities required for the activities and so we can do those activities to the best of our abilities. To this day, I still make decisions with that lesson in mind. It’s better to do a couple things well than to stretch myself too thin and risk not fulfilling agreed upon expectations and letting down those who are depending on me. Sure, like most people, I have some fear of missing out when I decide an activity does not rise to the top of my life’s priority list. In my opinion, what’s worse than missing out are the consequences of stretching myself too thin and experiencing the negative impacts of a life that is way too busy and stressful. I am trying to share this lesson with my daughters on a regular basis because I recognize how important it was for me to learn it.
When I think of these three lessons, among so many others, that my Cor Jesu education instilled in me, how could I not give back and help give others the chance to learn such amazing and lifechanging lessons? Well, that is one of the easiest questions I can answer. As long as I have the means, I choose to give.

A Gift from Heaven
When you have nine children, you become accustomed to the unexpected. The unexpected broken arm, unexpected friends over for dinner, unexpected sibling fights in the backseat of the car. It becomes part of your daily routine, really. But no matter how accustomed you are to surprises, no parent or family can be prepared for everything.
The Furays raised their family in the Webster Groves area of St. Louis. Alice Furay Visser ‘84, the oldest of the nine Furay siblings was searching for a Catholic high school with high academic standards and financial aid opportunities. She chose to attend Cor Jesu Academy, setting the path for most of her younger sisters.
“It wasn’t easy to get to Cor Jesu,” Alice said. “I had to take two buses. But it was something I wanted to do and it was the place I wanted to be.”
After Alice came Ann Furay Poelzl ‘88, Clare Furay ‘91, Elizabeth Furay Bundt ‘92 and Suzanne Furay ‘94. Their younger sister, Julia, also started at CJA and graduated from Webster Groves High School in 1996.
“Cor Jesu taught me how to plan ahead, be proactive and how to overall be a good student and worker,” Suzanne said. “I feel empowered as a female in the workplace thanks to my roots at CJA.”
“My time at Cor Jesu was a turning point in my education,” Ann said. “I was successful in a difficult program in college and it was because of how Cor Jesu prepared me.” Heaven would have school, except it would teach fun subjects…
In addition to the academics, the Furay sisters each participated in a variety of activities. Most were involved in the plays, either as actresses or on the crew; they passed on the role of swim team manager one to the other, except to Elizabeth, who was a swimmer; most were in the National Honor Society; some wrote for the Corette (CJA’s school newspaper).
In heaven, there would be a grab bag of talents…

I like to think about heaven, because it’s really an escape from stress….
Perhaps the most talented writer of the Furay sisters was Clare.
“She had a regular column in the newspaper,” Jean Furay, mother of the Furay sisters, recalled proudly.
“She could scramble together an exemplary essay for Rhetoric during a study hour just before class,” Elizabeth added.
And while the Furay family always expected to read joyful, witty and thoughtful pieces from Clare, they didn’t expect to be creating a book of her writings in her memory so soon.
In heaven, we would talk to many intriguing people…
After graduating from Cor Jesu in 1991, Clare attended the University of Notre Dame on an ROTC scholarship and studied history. She then entered the Navy and served mostly as a supply officer, stationed in San Diego. When her four-year obligation to the Navy was close to an end, Clare had many options for her future. At that point, she was earning a nice paycheck as a full lieutenant and could remain in her position. She was also offered a full scholarship to the Saint Louis University School of Law. With two solid and fruitful choices in front of her, Clare chose a different path.
Heaven would have work to be done…
“She was quite religious and had a passion for volunteering,” Alice said. “Because of her strong faith, she really wanted to make a difference for people, so she decided to join the Jesuit Volunteer Corps (JVC).”
In August of 1999, Clare moved to Baltimore with the JVC to begin her volunteer work in affordable housing. She kept in touch with her family, of course, through letters and emails. There would be mail, but no junk mail…
In her spare time, she enjoyed jogging. On October 8, 1999, Clare was on her route and the unexpected happened. She was struck by a car. Immediately, a doctor, who a witness found in a nearby store, tended to Clare in the street. She was transported to the Maryland Shock Trauma Center and her parents were on the first plane to Baltimore upon hearing the news. Clare was on life support and died the next day. She was just 26 years old.
In my heaven, all the best parts of life would greet me every morning…
Devastated, the Furay family was “grasping at straws,” as Suzanne remembered, to make it through. They found comfort in donating Clare’s organs to others in need. And later, found solace in carrying

on her name at Cor Jesu Academy with the Clare C. Furay Scholarship.
“Since she was recently out of the Navy, Clare had a life insurance policy with a substantial payout,” Alice said.
“We wanted to do something to honor her that we knew she would love. She loved education and writing, and her years at CJA were precious to her, so starting the scholarship to help families in need was the perfect combination of all those things.”
Conal and Jean Furay, Clare’s parents, were very specific when they started the scholarship in 2000. The money was to be designated for families who encounter something unexpected that changes their ability to pay tuition at CJA.
“Clare learned a lot about barriers and resiliency in her experiences, particularly in the Navy and the JVC,” Alice said.
“We like that this scholarship is sending a message to families to keep moving forward during the difficult times, and while you’re pushing through, this scholarship is here to help.”
The Ruffino family, who received the Clare C. Furay Scholarship during the 2020-2021 school year, heard that encouraging message loud and clear. The family encountered a series of unexpected events leaving Jen Ruffino, parent of Annie Ruffino ’21 and Ally Ruffino ’23, wondering if she could afford Catholic education for her daughters.
“Suddenly realizing I was a single mom who had sole custody and sole financial responsibility meant I would be forced to make sacrifices and tough choices,” Jen said. “After many prayers for courage, dignity and humility, I asked CJA for help. I didn’t know how scholarships were funded or the stories behind the donations that make tuition assistance possible. When we read Clare’s story, all three of us were moved to tears. I’ve seen
Cor Jesu educate the whole person – it is what makes this school stand apart from others. The lessons of grace and resiliency all three of us have learned from this life event are reinforced at Cor Jesu in the classroom, in activities and in relationships. As I’ve watched my daughters volunteer for stage crew, give tours to prospective families or serve as retreat leaders, I hope Clare is looking down from heaven and smiling about this chapter of her legacy.” Heaven would be full of joys…
The Furays all agreed that Clare would not have been the person she was without Cor Jesu, and her calling to a life of service is represented with her scholarship.
“The fact that Clare can continue to answer that call from heaven is really neat for all of us,” Ann said.
“I have peace in knowing that other young women get to experience the joys that come with attending CJA, as well as the spiritual and academic growth that come with being a Cor Jesu student,” Elizabeth said. “I hope the young women benefitting from Clare’s scholarship are able to carry on the tradition of stewardship to those who are in need.”
Yes, heaven is nice to think about. So God, wherever you are, I’ve taken the liberty of doing a little planning for you…

This piece, combined with hundreds of others, is compiled in a book called “Essentially Clare: The Story of a Young Christian Woman.” The Furay family put Clare’s pieces together in this book after her death to honor and cherish her memory. Thoughts on Heaven
CLARE CONALL FURAY '91
I like to think about heaven, because it’s really an escape from stress. In my heaven, all the best parts of life would greet me every morning. In my heaven, I wouldn’t have to deal with Chemistry tests or headaches or hurt feelings. Instead every day would be a jolly-holiday. There would be lots of snowy mornings, and thick, wonderful books, and family tag football games on crisp November afternoons, and pears so juicy they drip down your chin. There would be fried chicken, and ice cream, and steak, and piping hot pepperoni pizza. The nights would be dazzlingly clear and starkly black. Heaven would be full of gardens, abundant in dew glistening red roses, trillions of violets, and honeysuckle.
I think it would be fun to set up any kind of situation, fantasy or real life, and act it out several times, trying out different actions. (I know what situations I would like to relive!) In heaven, we would talk to many intriguing people. (“Let’s see, I have an eight o’clock appointment with George Washington today, then luncheon with Sarah Bernhardt, then an afternoon walk with Charlemagne.”)
In heaven I would get to read sequels to all my favorite books. In heaven there would be a grab bag of talents. If I felt like being a fabulous ice-skater for a day, I could check out that capability just like a book from the library. Heaven would have school, except it would teach fun subjects— like photography and art and how to dress for success—and every day would be like the first day of school! We would wake up with that eager anticipation, and it would never wear off.
Heaven would be full of joys like fresh, hot strong coffee; cherry trees; roller coasters with no lines; jazz bands; boys that are madly in love with me; Beatles’ songs; stained glass windows in chapels with soft incantations of prayer on March mornings; red convertibles playing loud music on highways; concert halls featuring a single black grand piano with a yellow rose on a stage in front of a hushed audience; dusty treasure-filled attics just waiting to be explored; toboggan rides down long hills—ending in a jumble of arms and legs and laughter; toasted marshmallows on burnt sticks; motor boats on large lakes. Heaven would have work to be done: extremely messy rooms, letters waiting to be typed, and snow crying out for a shovel! Every morning each person would do a job to clear his system for a leisurely afternoon.
In heaven no person would ever, ever ridicule someone else. One could dislike someone else, but everybody would know exactly how people felt about them. There would be mail, but no junk mail. Little children would often get fat letters from friends or sisters or uncles.
Yes, heaven is nice to think about. So God, wherever you are, I’ve taken the liberty of doing a little planning for you...

Benefits of Endowed Scholarships
An Endowed Scholarship provides a personal and permanent way to make a difference in the life of a student and her family. Your investment ensures that you will personally provide a Cor Jesu education for a deserving student and future students. While each Endowed Scholarship is tracked individually, all Cor Jesu Endowment funds are invested together, to realize the benefits of a larger investment pool.
The assets are invested in a fully-diversified portfolio and are part of a disciplined investment program overseen by Cor Jesu’s Endowment Committee. Scholarships are provided by the distributions made from the investment portfolio. Scholarship eligibility at Cor Jesu is determined by a need-based assessment through FACTS Management.
Establishing an Endowed Scholarship is a significant way to fulfill an immediate and future need by providing financial aid to Cor Jesu Academy students. There are three levels of Endowed Scholarships at Cor Jesu:

Planting the Seed
As she sat in the passenger seat, driving home to St. Louis from Iowa with a DJM Ecological Services crew, Mary Hruz ‘20 couldn’t help but think, “Wow, did I just do that?” She had just completed a data collection project for DJM’s client, the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, on a forest in Iowa that suffered major flooding the past couple of years. The data Mary helped collect would contribute to determining the Army Corps’ strategy for habitat restoration in this area. The answer was, “Yes.” Yes, you did just do that, Mary.
In her early years as a student at Cor Jesu, Mary knew she was interested in plants, animals and working outdoors, but she wasn’t sure how that translated to a job in the real world. To attempt to figure it out, Mary participated in Cor Jesu’s annual exp3 day – a program where students spend a full day immersed in a career experience of their choice, interacting with professionals on-site and participating in hands-on activities.
Keeping animals in mind, Mary chose to spend her first exp3 day at Royal Canin, thinking that veterinary work might be her calling. The only problem with that was it didn’t give her the ecological experience she was looking to obtain in her future career. So, the next year, her junior year, she participated in exp3 again, this time visiting DJM Ecological Services. DJM is a St. Louis-based company that provides comprehensive ecological restoration and management of native plant communities. It offers a variety of services, including: ecological consulting services; ecological contracting services, which ensure full leverage of a site’s ecology to produce an attractive, functional and compliant landscape solution; and native plant specialist services, which provide site specific, custom native seed mixes for each unique project. After spending a day with CJA alumna and project ecologist at DJM, Becky Matye McMahon ‘94, Mary was hooked.
“My exp3 day with DJM was amazing,” Mary said. “We visited all kinds of different project sites in St. Louis and got hands-on experience with ecological services that I loved. I knew I never wanted to go to the same place for work every single day, so the moving around aspect really appealed to me.”

Mary Hruz completing field work during her summer 2021 internship with DJM.
“Since its first year as an exp3 site in 2013, DJM has done a phenomenal job of including hands-on experiences on exp3 day,” said Cynthia Wilhelm, Director of CJA’s Career, College & Wellness (CCW) Center. “We work really hard to create meaningful experiences where students get a realistic glimpse of what it would look and feel like to enter a certain career field, and DJM has been a great partner with us in that mission.”
In the past, some students have been surprised to find themselves on job sites, pulling weeds with DJM.
“A lot of people have a misconception of what habitat restoration or ecological services entails,” Doug Bauer, President of DJM, said. “We aim to eliminate that misconception and give students a realistic experience so they can make an informed decision later as to if this is the right career path for them or not.”
For Mary, it was right. Thanks to her exp3 experience, she knew during her college search that she wanted to find a university with some type of environmental science program. Iowa State University was on her list of options. When she visited, they recommended she explore the school’s natural resources department.
“Seeing an entire department dedicated to natural resources made me realize that there were so many options within this field,” Mary said. “And that got me excited.”
Mary chose Iowa State University and entered the school’s College of Agriculture and Life Sciences in the fall of 2020. She declared a Forestry major within its Natural Resources Department and is on track to graduate with a bachelor’s degree in forestry and minor in animal ecology in 2024.
Fortunately, Mary won’t just graduate with her degree, but also with valuable field experience that connects back to her exp3 day visit with DJM.
In the spring of 2021, while exchanging emails about plans for DJM’s ninth exp3 day, Doug sent Cynthia the job description for a summer Restoration
Technician, inviting her to share it with interested alumnae. Cynthia recalled Mary’s interest in the field and that her college and degree program aligned, so she reached out to Mary with the opportunity.
“I was ecstatic when Mrs. Wilhelm contacted me about working with DJM over the summer,” Mary said. “Not a lot of internships would take me after only my freshman year, but since I had the connection with DJM in high school and the interest in the field, they hired me!”
“It’s exactly what the Corporate Partners Initiative is about,” Cynthia said. “We want to help our students explore a vast variety of career fields while they are in high school and facilitate these meaningful connections that come back around and turn into real opportunities.”
And in the ecological services field, making these connections and gaining these experiences early is especially key.
“In our field, there’s a big combination of hard and soft skills,” Doug said. “It’s better to get people started young and have them gain exposure to everything so that when they are ready to get to work, they are adequately prepared with their education and actual work experience. Someone like Mary, who now has had exposure to this line of work since she was 16, is going to have better chances for upward mobility while she’s young.”
It’s been a win-win for both parties. For Mary, she is learning those hard and soft skills, and gaining valuable experience earlier in her educational career than most. For DJM, they are spreading the word about their field to bright young women at Cor Jesu, who might be interested, but, like Mary, may not otherwise know how to define their interests in a job title.
Who knows? Maybe someday, it will be Mary in the driver’s seat, and a future Cor Jesu graduate riding along to Iowa for her first data collection trip with DJM…all because of the connections and experiences created through CJA’s evergrowing Corporate Partners Initiative.

Upholding Tradition
Family traditions. We all have them. A gift exchange at Christmas, a family football game on Thanksgiving, an annual beach vacation—family traditions shape who we are. For Caroline Lenczowski Detweiler, a 1992 Cor Jesu graduate, one of her family traditions is Cor Jesu.
Caroline is the youngest of six girls, and all but one attended Cor Jesu. With four older sisters paving the way at CJA, Caroline spent a lot of time at the school, even before she was a student. When it came time for her Open House visit in eighth grade, she already had a feeling that this was where she was meant to be.
“We made it halfway down the first-floor hallway on my tour, and I just knew it,” Caroline recalled. “It felt like family there.” She became the fifth sister to attend, and even as a teenager, Caroline recognized the sacrifices her parents made to send her and her sisters to Cor Jesu. Caroline’s mom went back to work full-time when she was 4 years old to ensure that her daughters could not only attend college, but that they were prepared to succeed in college by attending Cor Jesu. And in Caroline’s opinion, it worked.
“When I showed up at Virginia Tech my freshman year, I knew how to study, write papers, ask the important questions, and figure out where to find the answers I needed,” Caroline said. “Not all the freshmen could do that, and it was thanks to my roots at CJA.”
While Caroline’s parents valued academics, they saw college preparation as more than just test scores. Faith, and having it ingrained in their daughters’ daily lives through the Apostles of the Sacred Heart, also set Cor Jesu apart. Caroline found that the Sisters were a great source of guidance during those formative teen years, and she developed relationships with them both spiritually and as friends. One day, Caroline and her friends were having eraser fights with Sr. Barbara Thomas, ASCJ, and another day, they were inspired by the Sisters’ devotion to Christ through service. The ability to see the Sisters as religious role models and as approachable friends made an impact on Caroline and strengthened her beliefs.

what I believed,” Caroline remembered.
“I knew that as I continued forward in life, the community of Sisters was always going to be there for me.”
The value placed on education and faith at Cor Jesu stuck with Caroline and made it a place she hoped to continue her family tradition—even from two hours away.
Caroline, her husband, John, and their 10 children reside in Ashland, Mo., where John works with the Anheuser-Busch Clydesdales at Warm Springs Ranch and Caroline works as a veterinarian. The family moved from St. Louis to Ashland in 2012, but under one condition from Caroline— “That the kids’ education would not suffer.” Her goal remained that their children would receive the best opportunities available, and for their first-born, Mikayla ‘22, that meant taking the traditional route at Cor Jesu in a non-traditional way.
Mikayla visited Cor Jesu in eighth grade, and despite the location, she fell in love. Like her mom, Mikayla found a welcoming spirit at CJA and saw it as a family. Not to mention, she was impressed by the science labs. When Mikayla told her parents that she wanted to be a Charger, they made it happen—with some help from grandma and grandpa.
In the Fall of 2018, Mikayla moved in with Caroline’s parents in St. Louis to begin her freshman year at Cor Jesu. She quickly became involved with sports, the Benin Babies service club, Mock Trial and of course, ECHO, CJA’s science club. The oldest of 10, living only with her grandparents was quite the change for Mikayla. It’s a quieter home, which makes for a nice place to study, but at the beginning, she did miss her parents and siblings.
“It was hard sometimes, and still can be hard, because I’ll miss birthdays during the week or other exciting events with my family,” Mikayla said. “But I always know it’s worth it because Cor Jesu is preparing me so well for college and I’ve made so many great friends with people I would have never known otherwise.”
Fortunately, Mikayla’s time as an only child was short-lived. The next year, her younger twin siblings, Rebecca and Daniel, also moved in with their grandparents to pursue their Catholic high school educations. Rebecca is now a junior at Cor Jesu and Daniel is a junior at Christian Brothers College High School (CBC).
“It’s been an adjustment being away from home the past two years,” Rebecca said. “However, my experiences at Cor Jesu have been amazing and so different than if I hadn’t moved to St. Louis. I have been very involved at CJA which has allowed me to make amazing friends, develop leadership skills, challenge myself academically and grow in my Catholic faith.
The fourth Detweiler sibling also moved in with grandma and grandpa this fall. Abigail just began her freshman year at Cor Jesu, following Mikayla and Rebecca.
“It’s exciting to be back with my older sisters and become a Charger like my mom and aunts,” Abigail said. “My sisters have calmed my nerves about being away from home. I miss the rest of my family, of course, but am excited for the challenges of being a CJA student and am ready to experience the school’s spirit."
John and Caroline Detweiler miss their four oldest children, but to them it’s a sacrifice worth making. Inspired by her parents’ sacrifices that allowed her to experience Cor Jesu, Caroline wants to do the same for her daughters. Cor Jesu was instrumental in Caroline’s success in college and in vet school; it was a milestone in her faith journey, and the source of many special friendships.
“Most importantly, I think Cor Jesu sets the foundation for its students to say to themselves, ‘Hey, I can do this,’ when things get tough in life,” Caroline said. “And when they really feel like they can’t, they have their foundation of faith to lean on.”
It was a simple pro-con decision for the Detweilers. The pros of sending their daughters to Cor Jesu simply outweighed the cons of not seeing each other every day. Plus, how can you argue with family tradition?

LETTER FROM THE DIRECTOR OF Advancement
Dear Cor Jesu Community,
The last year was marked by more than a few “I don’t think I’ll ever forget” moments. But one that I know I’ll never forget is the evening of February 6, 2021. The night of Cor Jesu’s annual auction. We had no idea what would happen with the all-virtual format. To be honest, we spoke of our goals only in whispers, because we didn’t think we could expect to achieve them. But then February 6 came. About a halfdozen of us were gathered in a small studio in Brentwood – double-masked and holding our breath. Fund-a-Need started. Donations came in. We breathed a small sigh of relief. The minutes ticked past, and the donations kept coming in. Pouring in. By the hundreds of dollars. By the thousands! I think my mask was the only thing keeping my jaw off the floor. We started the night with an ambitious goal of raising $150,000 for financial aid. We ended the night with nearly $250,000 in donations and pledges.
Now that we've managed through so many of the hardships, the challenges and the frustrations, it’s easier to see the last year in a different light. It really was inspirational.
This community came together, even though we couldn’t be together. Over 1200 people watched the Auction on YouTube (480 attended in 2020); 880 people purchased an item, bought a raffle ticket or donated to Fund-a-Need (compared to 258 in 2020), including alumnae from states as distant as New York and Arizona. Auction grossed
roughly $500,000 – and that's just one example. Over the course of the year, we brought in nearly $1 million in Annual Fund gifts and Endowment pledges (including $250,000 from our Auction Fund-a-Need).
You have shown us what’s possible. Now it’s up to us to use the lessons of 20202021 to make 2021-2022 even better.
Inspired by your commitment to financial aid, we will once again dedicate Giving Tuesday to the Annual Fund, our primary source of financial aid. The annual day of giving takes place the first Tuesday after Thanksgiving – mark your calendars for November 30! This community raised $240,000 on Giving Tuesday in 2020. We hope to increase that to $275,000 in 2021. Meanwhile, we are working to reimagine various events to meet the needs of this extraordinary community. The virtual auction pulled support from coast-to-coast and generated greater participation than ever before. We look to replicate that level of participation and enthusiasm as we plan for 2022!
A year ago, I didn’t know how we would make it to this point. Today, I am not only amazed by what we accomplished, but so very optimistic for the year ahead.
Sincerely,
Abby Samel Director of Advancement

Blessed Clelia
LEGACY SOCIETY
Blessed Clelia Merloni, foundress of the Apostles of the Sacred Heart of Jesus, did not set out on a mission to create a new religious congregation. She set out to serve God, be that by comforting an orphan or educating an immigrant. Those bricks of service, kindness and love built her legacy.
32 | FY 2020-21 DATES: JULY 1, 2020-JUNE 30, 2021
Inspired by her words, “Love your work … fulfill it with joy … your mission is to love God and to help others love him also.”
Cor Jesu Academy introduced the Blessed Clelia Legacy Society, through which patrons can perpetuate the momentum of Clelia’s mission, inspiring young women to Share the Love of the Heart of Christ – one at a time – for generations to come.
The Blessed Clelia Legacy Society recognizes those generous individuals who have chosen to provide future support for Cor Jesu Academy in their estate plans, through wills, trusts, life income gifts, retirement plans, life insurance policies or other means.
Bequests to Cor Jesu can be for a specific amount, for the percentage of an estate, or for all or a portion of what is left after other bequests have been distributed.
Cor Jesu also invites the benefactor to determine how the funds are used. An unrestricted gift gives Cor Jesu the flexibility to assign the gift based on areas of greatest need. A restricted gift assures the dollars will be distributed according to the benefactor's wishes, be that to financial aid, the endowment, capital projects or specific programs.
An estate gift of $20,000 or more can carry the name of the donor or that of a loved one. What a lasting legacy to both you and Cor Jesu!

“I love going to Cor Jesu because I am able to grow in this enhanced learning environment that helps me understand the world around me in so many different ways. CJA not only teaches me academics, but a common understanding of how to be an influential member of our society in the future. Thank you for all you are doing for me. I am so appreciative for the gift you have given me at CJA.”
