A MESSAGE FROM CORIELL INSTITUTE

Dear Students, Welcome to the 39th Annual Coriell Institute Science Fair!

I’m so excited to be back! Last year was my first year attending this event and I left truly impressed and inspired by the curiosity and talent on display.

Science is not an easy pursuit. It requires knowledge of a subject, curiosity to ask a question few have asked before, cleverness to design an experiment to test that question, and often the results can disappoint when they do not confirm what you thought in the first place. These challenges make this field of study all the more rewarding. I applaud all of you for your hard work and commitment to answering these scientific questions in the face of these challenges.

Science fairs such as this one are special because they take you out of your text books and offer you the chance to experience each stage of that process for yourself. You knew a bit about a topic, asked a question about it, proposed a theory and conducted an experiment to see if you were right. That is the true work of professional scientists.

We hope that you enjoyed your project and that this experience will help you decide if a career in the sciences is a good fit for you. This pursuit is more important than ever as it has unique potential to change the world. Breakthroughs in battery technology hold promise to ease our reliance on fossil fuels, advances in personalized medicine hold promise to cure the world’s most stubborn diseases, and unpredictable developments will create a future which none of us today can imagine possible.

The one thing that ties all of those together is you. Your generation will soon pick up where mine leaves off and we are thrilled to see what you accomplish.

Congratulations and welcome to the 39th Annual Coriell Institute Science Fair!

Camden County College is proud to host the Science Fair again this year and to share your enthusiasm for scientific theory and its applications in healthcare, technology and engineering.

The selection of your project for this prestigious event recognizes your knowledge, hard work and creativity. Students whose ideas and experiments are showcased here today are on track to make discoveries that will increase our understanding of the world and change the way we live in the years ahead.

As a longtime leader of science and technology education, the College is proud of its dedicated faculty and exceptional facilities. Our programs offer high-quality instruction in small, conveniently scheduled classes. Halpern Hall houses labs and simulation rooms for biology, chemistry, physics and veterinary technology. Halpern Hall also includes a surgical technology suite, dental hygiene clinic, nursing arts center, a nutrition science kitchen and café. Additional College facilities serve programs in many other fields, including cybersecurity, biotechnology, computer science, computer-integrated manufacturing, robotics, photonics, music recording and video game design.

CCC’s partnership with Rutgers University-Camden allows you to be part of the Rutgers community from day one, and our tuition is still among the lowest in the region. Whether you begin at CCC while still in high school through dual-credit, enroll at CCC for the first two years of your baccalaureate studies before transferring, or take CCC classes during summer or winter breaks, courses completed here transfer to public and private college and universities in the state, the region and beyond.

This makes CCC a great place to start your higher education, especially in allied health, science and technology fields. Two of today’s competitors – an 11th-grader with a winning physical/life sciences entry and an 11th-grader with a winning technological sciences entry – will be awarded two-year scholarships to CCC. 39TH ANNUAL CORIELL SCIENCE FAIR

ABOUT CORIELL

Founded in 1953, the CORIELL INSTITUTE FOR MEDICAL RESEARCH is an internationally renowned, non-profit, biomedical research institution. The Institute’s founder, Lewis L. Coriell, MD, PhD, played a major role in developing the vaccine to eradicate Polio by using cell cultures to study human viral diseases. The Institute now carries on his legacy through critical research initiatives and its support for research around the world.

The Coriell Institute for Medical Research is an internationally renowned biomedical research nonprofit with a dual mission – to supply the global research community with high quality biological materials and services and to conduct forward-looking research at its facility in Camden, New Jersey.

Coriell was founded in 1953 by Dr. Lewis L. Coriell.

Dr. Coriell, a virologist who played an important role in developing the polio vaccine, saw a need for standardized biological samples for use in research and worked with the National Institute for General Medical Sciences to create a collection which all scientists could depend on. That collection, the Human Genetic Cell Repository, was launched at Coriell in 1973 and over the years Coriell has built relationships with many other organizations and now offers millions of samples to scientists around the world.

Coriell scientists are investigating what causes some people to be more at risk of opioid use disorder than others. In 2018, Coriell partnered up with its Camden neighbors Cooper University Health Care and the Cooper Medical School of Rowan University to form the Camden Opioid Research Initiative (or CORI). CORI researchers are studying chronic pain patients, patients who are receiving treatment for a substance use disorder and CORI is building a biobank of samples taken from people who have died as a result of an overdose. This work promises to bolster the scientific understanding of addiction risk in hopes of arming doctors with more information when they prescribe these powerful, yet important drugs.

Research is also a major focus of the Coriell Institute.

Jean-Pierre Issa, MD, Coriell’s President and Chief Executive Officer, is a world-recognized expert in epigenetics – or the ways the turning “on” and “off” of genes affect our health – of aging and cancer. Coriell has a team of researchers working to learn more about the role epigenetics plays in cancer and how it can be tapped to improve treatments.

DNA DAY ACTIVITY, 2020

Your DNA is your genetic code, a long chain of instructions that tells your body how to function. At its most basic level, that code is made up of four different molecular building blocks which are represented by the letters A, T, C, and G. With just those four, DNA holds the power to determine all the different biological factors that makes us who we are.

Each year at the Coriell Institute Science Fair, we recognize DNA Day with a hands-on activity to teach young scientists about this important subject. DNA Day is organized every year by the National Human Genome Research Institute and falls on the anniversary of the discovery of DNA’s double helix structure.

This year, students at the Coriell Science Fair will have the opportunity to learn about how these building

blocks work together using beads. These blocks are always found in what are called base pairs, meaning they always work together forming the double helix.

An “A” is paired with a “T”, and a “G” is always paired with a “C”.

When connected in a specific order, these bases act as a blueprint to build an entire organism; from a tiny microbe to a great white shark. With that knowledge, we can complete pieces of genetic code for various animals and turn that code into a double-stranded, scientifically accurate bracelet!

PARTICIPANT UPDATES MATTHEW MCBRIDE, PhD

KARINE HAGEBOUTROS, PsyD

His doctoral thesis determined how a fusion protein, known as SS18-SSX, can disrupt transcriptional regulation resulting in the development and growth of the pediatric cancer synovial sarcoma.

As a member of McBride Home School, Matthew McBride presented a project at the Coriell Institute Science Fair each year of sixth through 12th grade which inspired and motivated him to embark on a career in scientific research.

Following graduation this past spring, Matthew has started a post-doctoral research fellowship at Princeton University, where he is expanding his training to explore in vivo metabolism to better understand the nutritional requirements of pancreatic tumors.

After studying chemistry at Drexel University, he obtained his Doctor of Philosophy in chemical biology at Harvard University.

After earning a couple of first place awards in the Coriell Institute Science Fair in 2005 and 2008, Karine Hageboutros earned her Bachelor of Science in neuroscience from Lafayette College in 2013. Her interest in the intersection between medicine and psychology led her to pursue her Doctorate in Clinical Psychology from Widener University with a concentration in neuropsychology.

Her dissertation explored the relationship of executive functioning as a mediator of spina bifida severity and internalizing problems in children and adolescents.

Karine is currently a clinical neuropsychology postdoctoral fellow at Barrow Neurological Institute in Phoenix, Arizona.

Since her Coriell science fair days, Karine has continued to be involved in research, which helps inform her clinical practice. She is currently conducting research on the prediction model for verbal memory decline in different epilepsy surgical approaches: anterior temporal lobectomy vs. subtemporal selective amygdalohippocampectomy.

CORIELL SUMMER EXPERIENCE Coriell Institute invites a limited number of motivated students to participate in a Summer Experience program to gain insight into the workings of a renowned research institute. The student program runs during the month of July, Tuesday through Friday, from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. The 2020 Experience will begin on Tuesday, July 7, and end on July 31. Students rotate through various laboratories and receive individualized instruction and direction from a team of mentors. Student housing and meals are not provided and participants are responsible for their own transportation. A stipend of $1,000 is awarded to each student upon their successful completion of the program.

Am I Eligible?

Students interested in the program must: • Be at least 17 years of age by July 1 • Have a strong interest in science (advanced science classes are preferred) • Be available to participate in all four weeks of the program
