The organization’s mission is to advance the practice of corporate real estate through professional development opportunities, publications, research, conferences, designations, and networking in 46 local chapters and networking groups globally.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT Congratulations on another incredible year! Again this year I am overwhelmed with pride and gratitude at how much this volunteer organization is able to accomplish. This year not only did our Chapter offer a full slate of informative and entertaining sessions and panels, but we also played host again to the Eastern Regional Symposium and had a tremendous showing of members at the CoreNet Global Summit in Orange County.

We also made excellent progress on achieving the goals we set out in our 2017 strategic planning session. As you’ll read in the pages of this report, we have continued to enhance our use of technology, refine our governance protocols and processes, and update our marketing and communications tools. We also made great strides in our Diversity & Inclusion initiative, from hosting D&I-focused workshops to partnering with CREST to access a more diverse pool of talent for internships and co-op students.

But most importantly, we have had a LOT of fun! As I wrap up my term as President of our Chapter, I am most proud of the incredible network we have all continued to build and nurture in the last few years. Our social and networking events—the annual golf tournament, ski trip, lobster bake, Real Advantage sessions, sponsor reception, awards gala, and a multitude of other Chapter events—are second to none and truly make our Chapter such a vital part of New England’s corporate real estate community.

We have a number of Board members stepping back from their responsibilities this year, and I can’t thank them enough for their leadership, vision, and support in continuing to make our Chapter a leader throughout CoreNet Global. I’m also thrilled to introduce a new slate of directors to our Board, all of whom have already dedicated countless hours to our Chapter and will undoubtedly continue to raise the bar on what we can accomplish.

Finally, I’m delighted to welcome Steven Doben to the President’s role. Steven has proven himself a leader in our Chapter for years, both as a CoreNet Global member for over ten years and by serving on our Chapter’s Board of Directors for seven. I am thrilled to leave our Chapter in such great hands.

Let me conclude by saying how privileged I feel to have had the opportunity to serve as President of the CoreNet Global New England Chapter. Thank you again for your continued dedication, support, and friendship. A NOTE FROM STEVEN DOBEN, PRESIDENT ELECT This year was incredible for our Chapter! I would like to thank our Board for their enduring support and many hours of dedication and, especially, our President, Suzanne Cooper.

I am extremely grateful for her leadership and guidance—and nervous about what big shoes I have to fill! In the next two years, I would like to focus on two areas as we work toward our goals and initiatives: engaging the unengaged and highlighting the path of leadership within our organization. I look forward to working with all of you to continue raising the bar for our Chapter!

BOARD DEVELOPMENT FORMALIZED SUCCESSION PLANNING ENABLES SUSTAINED SUCCESS Sustainable Chapter success is a result of good planning and strong leadership. For effective and transparent succession planning, the Chapter formalized a Board Development Program aligned with CoreNet Global’s bylaws and governance process that promotes a mentorship strategy and balanced Board representation between CREs and service providers.

DEVELOPING NEW LEADERSHIP The Chapter will continue to grow and succeed with a continual pipeline of new talent, leadership, and perspectives. Members are encouraged to get involved in one or more committees to gain first-hand insight into how the Chapter operates and to contribute fresh ideas. The Chapter fields new Committee Chair leaders from its committee members, and these Committee Chair positions provide members with additional leadership opportunities and responsibilities.

Each year the Nomination Committee also solicits a “Call for Nominations” to join the Board of Directors.

Members interested in joining the Board of Directors are encouraged to apply, with strongest consideration given to those who have served on at least one or more committees and, ideally, served in a Chair role.

The New England Chapter of CoreNet Global has done an excellent job of retaining talented Board members by elevating incumbent Directors, with sufficient term remaining, to Chapter Officers. This approach leverages individual experience and maintains Board consistency and continuity. Officer positions are confirmed by the Board. The Board approves the Slate to be presented to the membership at least 30 days prior to the Annual Meeting. The membership votes to approve the proposed Slate by proxy vote, by electronic vote prior to the Annual Meeting, or at the Annual Meeting. To preserve Chapter thought leadership, ensure business continuity, and provide strategic insights where needed, the Advisory Council is comprised of past Presidents and any others who may be appointed by the President at her/his discretion to serve for a term of two years subject to extensions of such appointment. Members of the Advisory Council must be a member of the Chapter in good standing and these are non-voting appointments.

The goal of the Community Reinvestment Committee is to support the Chapter’s philanthropic and volunteer initiatives to create opportunities for development and networking for CREs and the general membership. This year the committee focused on the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston as the chosen organization.

The committee drove the effort to raise funds for the BGCB, tallying $20,000 through the CoreNet Global New England Chapter Golf Tournament and over $500 in gift cards from the Annual Chapter Holiday Party co-hosted by the Young Leaders and Career Strategies + Development committees.

The main goal of the Golf Committee is to plan, promote, and execute a successful golf tournament with ample opportunity for networking and member entertainment. The committee also works in tandem with the Community Reinvestment Committee to support the designated charitable fundraising efforts of the Chapter. This year’s tournament was held on July 17, 2019 at Pinehills Golf Club in Plymouth. Over 270 golfers (66 foursomes) participated, and several participated in our second-annual golf clinic, also held at Pinehills. Survey feedback was positive on the venue, networking, and overall event. As a result of the fundraiser, CoreNet New England donated $20,000 to the Boys & Girls Clubs of Boston.

The Membership Committee is responsible for maintaining and increasing our New England Chapter’s membership and raising awareness. The core focus of the committee is on retaining existing members and recruiting new ones.

The committee works closely with other Chapter committees to enlist their support and ensure that membership recruitment and retention is integrated into all Chapter activities and efforts.

GOALS: Retention: Maximize membership renewals and retain 70-80% of members each renewal cycle.

Recruit: Target and recruit new members. Invite prospects to Chapter programs and events and utilize registration lists for prospecting. Invite new CRE and Service Provider prospects to Chapter programs/events; focus on the Life Science and Higher Education sectors.

Awareness: Welcome new members to the Chapter: New Members Subcommittee advises new members of upcoming events and meets and greets new members at the next program or event. Continue to understand what is and isn’t working for members. Gain knowledge of reasons why members are not renewing and what would keep them as members.

Engagement: Ensure new and existing members are attending and benefiting from events.

The role of the Real Advantage Committee is to support the professional development of the New England Chapter’s corporate real estate community through exclusive, sponsor-only, qualifying program offerings. These invitationonly workshops and dinners, available to Corporate Partners and Founders Circle Sponsors, focus on timely topics relevant to enhancing corporate real estate professionals’ contributions to their companies and across the industry, as well as provide exclusive and unique opportunities for knowledge sharing via one-on-one networking and relationship development.

The Workshops and Industry Leader Panel Discussions introduce new ideas, case studies, and impacts to the industry in an educational, thoughtful environment.

Some of this year’s topics include: Structuring Real Estate Transactions in the New Lease Accounting Environment, Workplace Strategy, and Partnering for Success.

The Roundtable Dinners explore today’s current challenges and opportunities with leaders in the corporate real estate community. These dinners provide both a social and focused topic event. Some topics over the past year have included Diversity & Inclusion, Transportation & Traffic Congestion, Activity-based Unassigned Seating, Branded Environments, and Generative Design.

2018-2020 FOCUS AREAS AND STRATEGIC INITIATIVES

OPERATIONAL EXCELLENCE & TECHNOLOGY FOCUS We are committed to monitoring our operations, tools, and programs with a view towards continuous improvement. We have focused efforts to help us work smarter to ensure consistency and transparency in our communications and improve efficiencies with our event management and overall operations. To date, we rolled out an updated and streamlined website, distribute a weekly newsletter that includes events and a job and internship board, refined our finance and accounting systems, added more discipline to the annual budget development, established more consistent communications platforms and event management processes, launched feedback surveys, and assessed analytics, and we continue with the successful delivery of diverse programs and events in quality and quantity.

GOVERNANCE FOCUS We are committed to improving transparency and diversity of thought at the leadership level. Our goal is to review and make recommendations for change, clarity or improvements to the Chapter’s Bylaws, organizational design, leadership development, and succession planning so that we can continue to advance the Chapter’s mission.

We will provide clear guidance and processes for leadership recruitment, development, and commitment including volunteer experience descriptions, prerequisite requirements, and expectations.

We expect to complete this work by the end of this fiscal year, but we already held a professionally facilitated Board strategic planning retreat focused on governance improvements, benchmarked other chapters and professional services organizations, engaged CoreNet Global, implemented playbooks and co-chairs for each committee, and have made Board meetings more time-efficient for effective decision-making.

And for this fiscal year, we will seat the greatest infusion of new talent leadership with one-third new Directors on the Board!

MEMBERSHIP EXPERIENCE INITIATIVE We are committed to improving our members’ experience, engagement, and value proposition. At the time of press for this report, we are at an incredible 75% member retention! We will continue to offer quality education programs with industry experts, case studies and workplace tours, marquee events, and networking opportunities throughout the year. We administer real-time event surveys and an annual membership survey so we can assess, refine, and improve our event and program offerings and Chapter focus initiatives based on your feedback. We remain committed to our members with such professional development programs as Young Leaders Professional Development, Leadership 2.0, and Career Strategies and Development. We instituted high-touch check-ins with our new members to help them navigate the Chapter, and will be improving membership marketing materials and featuring member spotlights in the weekly newsletter.

PROFESSIONALIZE MARKETING & COMMUNICATIONS INITIATIVE We are committed to creating clear, concise, and professional marketing materials with consistent brand standards in support of our mission. To date, we have consolidated our announcements, standardized event checklists and presentation templates, deployed a sleeker website and weekly newsletters, and produced a Chapter promotional video. We also plan to complete a suite of updated membership, sponsorship, and education programs collateral that will be hosted in a resource and archive library.

DIVERSITY & INCLUSION INITIATIVE We are committed to promoting, supporting, and strengthening a welcoming and accepting community for all our members. We have held two D&I focused workshops and two dinners, completed an all-gender benchmarking study, and participated with a coalition of commercial real estate professional organizations at The First Annual Boston Commercial Real Estate Summit on Equity, Inclusion and Diversity. We are also proud to have partnered with and financially supported CREST (Commercial Real Estate Success Training), a non-profit organization that provides meaningful summer internships along with personal and professional skills development to highly motivated and talented college students who have been historically underrepresented in our industry. CREST will work with partner firms to recruit the right intern for your organization and will provide ongoing support and skills development training throughout their internship.

EASTERN REGIONAL SYMPOSIUM More than 400 CRE professionals attended the 2019 Eastern Regional Symposium on June 3rd and 4th at Boston University.
