A MESSAGE FROM STEVEN DOBEN, PRESIDENT, APRIL 2020MARCH 2022 Steven Doben

Who would have thought we would spend another year navigating the ever-changing landscape of the pandemic?

But here we are, and I continue to be amazed by the resilience of our membership. Last year we pivoted to a nearly all-virtual program, and this year we were able to adjust even further, mixing virtual with live programming and finding creative ways to engage with each other and with new members like never before.

Engagement and belonging are core tenets of CoreNet Global, and we made some excellent strides in fostering those values this year. I’m particularly proud of the Chapter’s full-fledged commitment to improving diversity and inclusion, which certainly ramped up in the last 12 months. This topic has always been important to us, but this year our Equity, Inclusion & Diversity Committee really got off the ground (read more on page 17), particularly as social justice has become an even more important force across the globe and within our businesses. From our partnership with the CREST internship program to the many events the committee led this year, there is no doubt we helped raise awareness of the opportunities within our industry to make sure we are providing opportunities for all to be part of the CRE community.

I also can’t say enough about how we all stepped up throughout these last two years to support the members of our CoreNet family. While we offered an outstanding line-up of CRE programs and events, we also made sure to leave room for simple connections. We hosted virtual coffee chats, social happy hours, and checked in on each other regularly. I hope you felt that sense of belonging as much as I did—it’s one of the things I love most about being part of this organization.

I never could have expected that I would serve my presidency in an almost entirely virtual setting, but I couldn’t have asked for a more supportive, innovative, and flexible constituency. You have rolled with the punches, and your feedback has made us better. I’m excited to see how your new president, Maureen Rystrom, will use these experiences to bring our Chapter to even newer heights. I am excited to see what’s next with her at the helm.

Thank you to my fellow Board Members, Executive Committee Members and Advisory Council Members who made the last two years as president an experience I will cherish. Our Chapter is stronger than ever, thanks to you. Stay safe and be well.

I am so passionate about our CoreNet New England Chapter and our members and I’m thrilled to be your new President. I can't even begin to tell you how energized I feel to take on the critical role of President of our great Chapter alongside the rest of your newly appointed Executive Committee.

I would like to thank Steven Doben, our Immediate Past President, and the prior Executive Committee and Board of Directors for your commitment and leadership, for expertly guiding us through the most challenging past two years, and for helping to set us up for success for the next two years and beyond.

I have a lot of ideas for our Chapter for the next two years, and we’ve hit the ground running with planning and implementation. At our recent Board Retreat and at the Annual Meeting in March, I introduced the concept of "Doing Well By Doing Good” to provide value and continue to make our members feel that they are making a positive impact. We accomplish this throughout our various committees – the obvious one being community reinvestment. But, still, we're also making significant

progress with the EID initiative, University Outreach, Young Leaders, and our learning development programs.

We’re also working on an Ambassador Program for members and sponsors – as you all know, the Members and Sponsors are the heartbeat of our wonderful organization, and we are focused on continuing to provide value, transparency, support and encouragement, so that CoreNet New England continues to be the leading corporate real estate association in New England! The fact that we recently achieved a 77% member retention rate, our highest retention rate ever, shows just how amazing of a Chapter we are.

As we continue throughout the next two years, we will roll-out additional initiatives and I welcome your ideas for our Chapter to continue to be the BEST large/mega Chapter of CoreNet Global!

BOARD DEVELOPMENT FORMALIZED SUCCESSION PLANNING ENABLES SUSTAINED SUCCESS Sustainable Chapter success is a result of good planning and strong leadership. For effective and transparent succession planning, the Chapter formalized a Board Development Program aligned with CoreNet Global’s bylaws and governance process that promotes a mentorship strategy and balanced Board representation between CREs and service providers.

DEVELOPING NEW LEADERSHIP The Chapter will continue to grow and succeed with a continual pipeline of new talent, leadership, and perspectives.

Members are encouraged to get involved in one or more committees to gain first-hand insight into how the Chapter operates and to contribute fresh ideas. The Chapter fields new Committee Chair leaders from its committee members, and these Committee Chair positions provide members with additional leadership opportunities and responsibilities.

Each year the Nomination Committee also solicits a “Call for Nominations” to join the Board of Directors. Members interested in joining the Board of Directors are encouraged to apply, with strongest consideration given to those who have served on at least one or more committees and, ideally, served in a Chair role.

The New England Chapter of CoreNet Global has done an excellent job of retaining talented Board members by elevating incumbent Directors, with sufficient term remaining, to Chapter Officers. This approach leverages individual experience and maintains Board consistency and continuity. Officer positions

are confirmed by the Board. The Board approves the Slate to be presented to the membership at least 30 days prior to the Annual Meeting. The membership votes to approve the proposed Slate by proxy vote, by electronic vote prior to the Annual Meeting, or at the Annual Meeting. To preserve Chapter thought leadership, ensure business continuity, and provide strategic insights where needed, the Advisory Council is comprised of past Presidents and any others who may be appointed by the President at her/his discretion to serve for a term of two years subject to extensions of such appointment.

Members of the Advisory Council must be a member of the Chapter in good standing and these are non-voting appointments.

Career Strategies + Development is your go-to resource for robust networking and learning through real-time engagement. CS+D programs offer guidance on how to successfully navigate and advocate for yourself throughout all points of your career – start to finish – including any detours and adventures along the way.

CS+D kept career growth conversations relevant for our community throughout 2021, by pivoting to a renewed focus on self-management, strategic goal-setting and purposeful wellbeing in the workplace. With the help of Wellbeing Expert, Psychologist Dr. Kibibi Springs, the committee designed a three-part series that began with a Growth Mindset Kickstarter workshop. The series continued through March of 2022, having moved through the topics of “Balance over Flow,” and finally concluding with an investigation of what we need to “Fuel our Professional Fire: Purpose, Strengths and Engagement.”

EDUCATION COMMITTEE

The Education Committee creates learning opportunities for the New England Chapter community. Made up of professionals from all facets of the CRE industry, this committee develops diverse program offerings focused on industry trends, technology, best practices, and professional/personal development. This year’s January event was the most well-attended webinar since virtual programs began almost two years ago.

CoreNet New England's Equity, Inclusion, and Diversity (EID) Committee is dedicated to raising awareness, providing education, and delivering programs to our members that promote and support equity, inclusion, and diversity in our community and within our Chapter. As CRE professionals, we influence design decisions around space, which can distinctly impact how and where people see themselves living and working in their space. We also manage access to space and are tasked with creating a "place" where people want to succeed and thrive. We represent a diverse yet significant portion of jobs in America, which should be reflected in the workplace. We have the ability and power to influence decisions on the supply chain, where diversity spending is possible, and we impact and support company culture through the spaces we deliver. We are excited to lead many engaging and necessary conversations in the CRE world and to grow our impact within CoreNet New England.

GOLF COMMITTEE

The main goal of the Golf Committee is to plan, promote, and execute a successful golf tournament with ample opportunity for networking and member entertainment. The committee also works in tandem with the Community Reinvestment Committee to support the designated charitable fundraising efforts of the Chapter. MEMBERSHIP COMMITTEE 2021-2022 MILESTONES & ACHIEVEMENTS: Welcomed 125+ new members. Finished in 1st Place for chapter retention and 2nd Place for chapter engagement within CoreNet Global’s Mega Chapter category.

GOALS

The Membership Committee is responsible for maintaining and growing our New England Chapter’s membership and engagement. The core focus of the committee is to raise awareness to CoreNet members and potential members of all the benefits that CoreNet has to offer. The committee works closely with our Board of Directors and other Chapter committees to enlist their support in ensuring that membership engagement is integrated into all Chapter activities and efforts.

UNIVERSITY RELATIONS COMMITTEE 2021-2022 MILESTONES & ACHIEVEMENTS: Successfully held 2021 events, in person, at Boston College, Boston University, Suffolk University and Wentworth Institute of Technology.

The University Relations Committee aims to increase awareness of the corporate real estate industry for students in undergraduate and postgraduate programs at Boston-area universities. The committee visits local universities to discuss the industry as a whole, career opportunities within the industry, and the varying career paths each committee member took to get to their current role. Additionally, the committee members actively encourage student participation in CoreNet, through mentorship and connections at local programming events, as well as the Global Summit and Eastern Regional Symposium events.

The mission of the Young Leaders Committee is to attract and retain future real estate leaders into the Chapter by creating programs designed to encourage young professionals to participate and become actively engaged in the corporate real estate industry. The Chapter is committed to ensuring that future corporate real estate leaders have access to educational resources and networking opportunities with their peers as well as senior professionals to support career development and growth.

Despite the challenges of COVID, we had a great year connecting with other committees in our Chapter, connected with Young Leaders in other chapters, hosted mentor-focused events, and had a successful Holiday Event that supported Boys and Girls Club of Boston.
