THE COAST OF ENDLESS POSSIBILITIES Awash with sparkling beaches, vibrant cities, a rugged hinterland and hundreds of annual sunshine hours, the East Coast is where Australia shines. Once you venture out of the capital cities and hit the highway for an epic road trip, lesser-known treasures arise in many of the smaller shires.

DID YOU KNOW? Located just north of Bundaberg, 1770 is the only town in the world which has a number for a name! Lieutenant James Cook made the first landfall by a European on what was to become the Discovery Coast, and the birthplace of Queensland, on May 24, 1770. From the town of 1770 discover Lady Musgrave Island, an island cay with an internal lagoon, unique to the Great Barrier Reef. The Great Barrier Reef parallels the Queensland Coast and is accessible from most destinations. At its heart is the Whitsundays, A string of tropical islands dotted along an idyllic stretch of paradise. The Whitsunday islands are world famous for the luxurious resorts which lay upon them, the azure water which surrounds them as well as the pure white silica sand of Whitehaven Beach and the iconic Heart Reef. The gateway to the Whitsunday Islands is Airlie Beach, a backpacking nirvana filled with palm-fringed beaches, waterfront parks and alfresco dining restaurants. It is the epitome of the chilled-out Australian beach lifestyle, a blend of fun in the sun followed by an entertaining night scene. South of the Whitsundays, venture to a place where nature comes naturally. The Mackay region is home to quiet beaches, lesser-known tropical islands and Queensland’s only blue river, the Pioneer. It is one of Australia’s best fishing locations with a selection of tidal creeks, inland dams, mangrove systems and deep-water reefs providing a plethora of fish to hook.

DID YOU KNOW? Queensland is home to five of Australia’s 11 World Natural Heritage areas. These include the Scenic Rim National Parks, Fraser Island, Riversleigh Fossil Fields, the Wet Tropics (including Daintree National Park), and one of the great natural Wonders of the World; the Great Barrier Reef. A fascinating place of exceptional beauty, Fraser Island is 120km in length. It contains more than 100 freshwater lakes all ringed by sand, and the surrounding rainforest is the only rainforest in the world which grows on highelevation sand dunes! Visit famous 75-mile beach, see migratory humpback whales during the winter months and view native dingoes on the beach.

DID YOU KNOW? There is an exotic fruit in the Daintree Rainforest known as the Chocolate Pudding Fruit. It is the only fruit on the planet which tastes like chocolate pudding, yet it is low in fat and contains more than four times the vitamin C of an orange; a chocoholics dream come true! You can sample the delicacy at a tropical fruit farm in Cape Tribulation. With so much to see and do, Australia’s East Coast is a land of possibility. It’s your time to shine!

DID YOU KNOW? Mackay is one of the best places in Queensland to see a platypus in the wild. Take a day trip to Eungella National Park and watch this unique duck-billed mammal splash among the water of Broken River. Continue the journey northward for a taste of the tropics in Townsville. The cosmopolitan city combines federation architecture with an array of top restaurants and boutique shopping. Soak in the coastal vibe with a stroll along The Strand or get close to nature and cuddle a koala at Billabong Sanctuary. Off the coast of Townsville, Magnetic Island is one of the few islands you can drive to. Take your vehicle on the car ferry and explore many of its 23 beautiful bays. Magnetic Island was named by Lieutenant James Cook in 1770, when the island appeared to affect the magnetic compass on his ship. For a small island, there is much to do on Magnetic Island. Soar above the island in the Red Baron; the only two-passenger, open cockpit biplane on floats, in the world. Ride bareback into the ocean on a horse trek or discover koalas in the wild with a bush walk to historic WWII forts. The exotic rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef and nestled inbetween these two World Heritage areas is the modern mecca of Cairns, Queensland’s most northern tropical city. Laze on a northern beach or explore the rustic artist village of Kuranda by taking a gondola ride above the lush rainforest canopy. One of the most fascinating areas to explore in Northern Queensland is the Daintree Rainforest. It is the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest in the world, thought to be more than 135 million years old.

DID YOU KNOW? Byron Bay is Australia’s most easterly point, the first place on the mainland to see the sun rise. A surf haven for wave riders, Byron Bay has earned its reputation as a world-class surf destination. But if you’ve never picked up a board before, never fear, Byron Bay still provides a veritable feast of attractions; from music festivals and art studios to markets, organic food, cultural tours and natural beauty. While it still retains an alternative vibe and laid-back atmosphere, Byron Bay is a destination for discerning travellers wishing to explore its stretches of pristine coastline, hinterland waterfalls and rainforest retreats. MUST DO: Once a hippie community hidden in the rainforest, Nimbin provides an insight into the alternative lifestyle that embodies the Byron shire today. The village is as intriguing as it is quirky, with a fascinating mural streetscape of indigenous, rainforest and psychedelic facades. Continue your journey north across the border into Queensland, where the beer is cold and the sun is hot.

Get ready for a big splash! It’s whale migration season and we’re flippin’ excited! From June to November each year, humpback whales come to swim, play and give birth to their calves in warmer waters before returning south on their annual migration to the Antarctic. A fantastic spectacle to see, the humpback whale is one of the more playful and acrobatic to watch, known for launching its massive body out of the water for brilliant breaching. From Byron Bay in northern New South Wales to Port Douglas in tropical North Queensland, there are plenty of opportunities to see these tail-slapping beauties in all their glory.

The experience While many land-based vantage points will give you a glimpse of the whales, nothing can compare to being on the water with them, to appreciate their sheer size and beauty. Whale watching tours give you the opportunity to come eye to eye with this magnificent mammal, as they tilt their giant body to get a better look at you. The water ripples and then all of a sudden, a giant spray of water erupts as one surfaces to breathe. It arches its back as it prepares to dive, lifting its tail high into the air before plunging vertically into the depths below. Get so close you can see the barnacles on its dark skin then listen to the crack and slap as its mighty tail hits the water.

10

Each year Australia’s eastern coastline comes alive with the artistic acrobatic displays of humpback whales. After a summer of feeding on krill in Antarctic waters, these impressive mammals migrate north to sub-tropical waters where they mate and give birth.

Migaloo, Bahloo and Chalkie the famous white whales Perhaps the most famous humpback whale in the world, Migaloo is the distinctive white whale who is regularly seen during migration season in Queensland waters. While it is thought that Migaloo may be the only completely white whale in the world, there are two other predominantly white whales which can also be seen in the Whitsundays; Bahloo, and the cheeky Chalkie, who was born in the Whitsundays in 2011. Chalkie made his return to the Whitsundays in 2015 and can be identified by a black spot on his tail fin.

How you can help protect whales? Please don’t litter; rubbish that ends up in the ocean can be deadly to marine animals. Always stay at least 100 meters away from whales and never touch or feed them, even if they approach you. If boating, check the guidelines for your local area in regard to the distances you must stay away from them. Report any injured or stranded whales to your local environment agency.

Multi Award Winning

Come and see why!

Did you know? • There are currently more than 19,000 Humpback Whales making their annual migration along the East Coast of Australia each year. This is amazing considering less than 30 years ago there were less than 300 Humpback whales left after the population was hunted to near extinction. • Humpback Whales love to play; In fact they are renowned around the world for their acrobatic ability. Despite weighing up to 45 tonnes they have the ability to completely leap from the water on a regular basis. • The Humpback Whale has no teeth, instead they have baleen plates, which act like a giant sieve. They are seasonal feeders and carnivores that filter feed tiny crustaceans (mainly krill) plankton, and small fish (including herring and mackerel) from the water. • These magnificent mammals migrate around 5000km on average, up to 10,000km, one of the longest migratory journeys of any mammal on Earth. • The gestation of a Whale is around 11months, for the optimum birth environment, the water should be around 22-25 degrees. This is the most important reason for their annual migration. Adult female whales give birth about once every two or three years and each baby whale needs about 100 pounds of milk per day to live! • Humpback Whales have two blow holes, one for each of their lungs. Each lung is about the size of a small automobile. Humpbacks don’t breathe like humans do, unlike humans, they actually have to think about breathing. So, to go to sleep and still breathe, they’ll only shut off half their brain at a time.

Now in its 19th year, the Whitsunday Reef Festival has officially come of age as the Great Barrier Reef Festival, in a rebrand that strengthens the ties to its world-famous namesake. Held over four days from August 1-4, the Great Barrier Reef Festival comprises a series of family-friendly events representing life at the physical and spiritual heart of the reef. The festival, produced this year in conjunction with platinum partner Cruise Whitsundays, kicks off with reef-themed workshops at the Coral Sea Marina | Resort (formerly Abell Point Marina), followed by a comedy gala at the Cruise Whitsundays Maritime Terminal in Port of Airlie. On Friday, August 2, the action moves to the foreshore, with night markets, food stalls, a beach bar, carnival rides, fireworks over the Coral Sea, a Great Barrier Reef Festival Flotilla of Lights, and live entertainment at ‘Beats on the Beach’.

12

On Saturday, August 3, classic cars and vintage clothing will take over the Airlie Beach main street in the Fraser Ford ‘Revvin’ the Reef’ car show and Miss Pin-up parade. This will be followed by the Wilmar Sugar Wearable Art Fashion Show, hugely popular Rotary Street Parade and Whitsunday Magic Mile running event. Beats on the Beach will see live entertainment finishing the day off, with festival favourites Electrik Lemonade headlining the bill. Sunday’s activities include an abundance of free entertainment at the Family Fun Day on the Airlie Beach foreshore, a Recyclable Regatta at Broadwater Beach, and music at Chill in the Park. Other Great Barrier Reef focused events including a lunch, onshore art installation and promotion of the region’s new underwater artworks are also planned. The festival is renowned for being a great, long weekend full of free and premium entertainment, as well as after parties at Airlie Beach’s famous nightclubs and bars.

Since its establishment in the late 1870s, Port Douglas has had many incarnations: gold-rush port, sugarexport hub, quiet fishing village. It still retains much of that classic charm and heritage today. The resort town filled with boutique experiences provides a laid-back environment for dining, shopping and tropical relaxation. Nestled between the Great Barrier Reef and the Daintree Rainforest, it’s the perfect base for day-trip adventures to absorb the wonders of World Heritage rainforest and reef.

STOP AND SOAK UP THE SERENITY OF ONE OF AUSTRALIA’S MOST TRANQUIL TROPICAL DESTINATIONS. As the halfway point in-between Townsville and Cairns, take the opportunity to meander barefoot along one of Mission Beach’s pristine shorelines, where the rainforest fringes the glimmering turquoise tide. Sound’s magical? This is only the start of why Mission Beach should be on your travel itinerary. Mission Beach is one of the few places along the Queensland coast where two World Heritage areas meet, the Wet Tropics rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. This stretch of paradise is also one of the closest mainland destinations to the Great Barrier Reef, only 38km away. Visitors wanting a unique diving or snorkelling experience are in luck, as it only takes an hour to reach some of the reef’s most beautiful and unique coral, meaning more time in the water viewing nature at its finest and less time on a boat. 14km of tropical sandy beaches line the four rustic villages which collectively make up Mission Beach. The villages of Bingil Bay, Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach and South Mission Beach each add their own unique vibe to this relaxed community. The village of Mission Beach is a great place to start your holiday. Stroll the eclectic array of gift stores and art galleries, then familiarize yourself with some of the town’s popular eateries, from cafes to bars and gourmet restaurants. Don’t let the relaxed ambience and casual way of life fool you, hiding among the villages are some of the best seafood delicacies and resort luxuries on the Queensland coast. Alongside breathtaking scenery, Mission Beach is home to unique and endangered wildlife. The Southern Cassowary is one of the most extraordinary looking large birds in the world, and the rainforest surrounding Mission Beach is where the majority of them reside. If you’re lucky, you may see one walking through bush or even through the grounds of your accommodation, though weighing on average 60kg, it’s advisable never to approach them.

You may find that you’re rather content laying beachside with a cool beverage in hand, but if you’re looking to fill your days with discovery and adventure, you’ve come to the right place! Express trips to the Great Barrier Reef can have you from coast to coral in only 45 minutes! In fact a plethora of water-based charters and activities are available. Deep sea charters can take you to the outer reef for a day of fishing or a day of diving. Experience white water rafting in the Tully Gorge, or paddle your way from beach to beach on a kayak.

AQUARIUM ANIMAL PROFILE: Species: Ornate Crayfish (Panulirus ornatus) Background: Crayfish don’t have claws; they have long slender antennae, which extend from under ledges or in crevices where they hide during the day. At night, they emerge to scavenge for food, which they gather and tear with special feeding limbs. Crayfish are decapods, meaning they have 10 legs. At the end of each leg are bristly socks that allow them to taste food and sense chemicals in the environment. Under UV light these socks fluoresce, which you can experience during our night programs. Species information: Crayfish are classified as crustaceans (along with prawns, shrimp and crabs). Their body is protected by a rigid skeleton on the outside. As crayfish grow they shed this exoskeleton and expand to a larger size before the new skeleton hardens. The moult and subsequent skeletons retain the same colouration and pattern. Ornate crayfish are identifiable by the ring-like pattern encircling their legs, while the legs of painted crayfish are adorned with stripes. In Queensland, these crayfish are found along the Great Barrier Reef and into the Gulf of Carpentaria. They are regularly targeted by recreational fishers. Egg-bearing crayfish are protected throughout Queensland. If accidentally caught, these individuals must be immediately and carefully returned to the water.

DID YOU KNOW?

Kangaroos Iconically Australian, the bouncy kangaroo is recognized worldwide as coming from a “land downunder,” Along with the emu, the kangaroo features on the Australian coat of arms. This is because it is one of the few animals in the world that has difficulty moving backward, so it was selected as a symbol of progress, always bounding forward. Townsville’s Billabong Sanctuary makes it easy for visitors to have an unforgettable kangaroo experience. Free-ranging kangaroos are fed their gourmet favourites at 9:10am. Kangaroos can be hand-fed at the walk in Kangaroo Corral throughout the day. Generations of kangaroos have been born at the sanctuary, learning from a young age that visitors often have bags of food to hand-feed them with. Bags of seed to feed the kangaroos and ducks can be purchased when you arrive at Billabong Sanctuary. The kangaroos aren’t shy, they may give you a friendly nudge with their nose if they think you have seed to share, and will happily bound up to you to munch the seed from your hand. Billabong Sanctuary have two types of kangaroos roaming the habitat, the Eastern Grey, which is the common species found in Queensland, and the Red Kangaroo, which is the largest species of kangaroo. Kangaroos are members of the macropod family, meaning “big-footed”. Billabong Sanctuary has some of the smallest members of the macropod family – the pademelons, which can be seen in their own walk-in enclosure. These cute little animals can be hand-fed DID YOU KNOW? Kangaroos can have three babies developing at one time. One can be mature and ready to leave the pouch, another tiny one can be developing in the pouch and one embryo can be in pause mode. This is because the females have the unique ability to delay birth of their baby until the previous joey has left the pouch. There are four teats in the pouch and each provides different milk for the different stages of development. Kangaroos are the largest marsupial surviving on Earth. They use their large, muscular tail for balance, often when they are “boxing” against other kangaroos, or when moving slowly they use it in place of a third leg. DID YOU KNOW? Kangaroos have excellent hearing and can swivel their large ears in all directions to pick up sounds. While you are at the sanctuary, watch how their ears move in response to unusual noise. Kangaroos in the wild are most active at night, but the kangaroos at Billabong Sanctuary are active during the day, so any time of day is a great time to visit. Bounce into Billabong Sanctuary, where nature is wild!

DID YOU KNOW – Kangaroos are the largest marsupial surviving on earth.

Billabong Sanctuary

Australia’s native animals are as weird and wonderful as they come. From the cuddly koala to the bounding kangaroo, Billabong Sanctuary lets you get up close and personal to your favourite furry, feathered and scaly friends. Billabong Sanctuary is based around three habitats; eucalypt forest, rainforest and wetlands, with a large billabong at its heart. Wetland birds come and go from the sanctuary as they please, and as you take a stroll around the lapping edge of the billabong, keep an eye out for the friendly turtles who greet you at the water’s edge. Whether you visit morning or afternoon, there are always guided shows and interactive opportunities to touch or feed many of the sanctuary’s inhabitants. If you leave Airlie Beach after breakfast and head north to Townsville, you will not miss any of the experiences as there is a 1 p.m. as well as a 3:15 p.m. crocodile feeding and also the opportunity to hold a koala both morning at 11:15 a.m. and afternoon at 4 p.m. At wildlife encounters, you can hold a koala or hug a wombat and have a souvenir photo for a small fee, or use your own camera. There is no charge for wrapping a python around your neck, holding a lizard or holding a small crocodile. At the popular feeding show, Bully will leap from the water in an amazing show of strength to take a snap at his lunch. Hear the tremendous jaws snap as Bully lunges for food, fed by one of our experienced rangers. To see him in action is an unforgettable nature experience. At the all-inclusive wildlife talks, you will learn about the ecology, the habits and unusual characteristics of Australia’s unique animals. Each ranger is passionate about the welfare of the animals at the sanctuary. Their care and devotion is evident in the presentations they give. They pass on valuable information about how to stay safe in the wild in North Queensland and also inform about many misconceptions people may have about different animals. One of the most misunderstood native animals in Australia is the dingo. See a different side to this magnificent creature and then pose for a photo and pat the friendly dingoes. Billabong Sanctuary has 2 star attractions when it comes to crocodiles. Bully who is the larger of the two weighing in at 750 kgs and measuring 4.5m in length. Bully arrived at Billabong Sanctuary in 2013 trapped at Halifax, north of Innisfail and due to his weight, his crate had to be transferred into his enclosure by crane. Then there is Jupiter, who is a whopping 500 kgs and 4.3m in length. Jupiter was caught off Townsville’s Strand beach in early February 2016. Estimated at 60 years of age, Jupiter has battle scars down the side of his body from confrontations with other large crocodiles. Make a day of it at Billabong Sanctuary by enjoying a coffee and meal from Blinky Bill Café or bring your own supplies to enjoy a barbecue beside the tropically landscaped pool. Check out our website for the interactive wildlife talks commencing at 10am and continuing right through the day till 4:30pm

Sip a cocktail by the pool, indulge with a spa treatment and dine at one of the three on-island restaurants before returning to the seclusion of your private room. Daydream Island has been thoughtfully created so that you can do as much or as little as you choose. Leave the island in search of adventure or enjoy one of the many on-island activities. Take the rainforest walk to the lookout at the peak, stretch-out with a sunrise yoga session, indulge with a cocktail at the swim-up bar, play a game of bingo or trvia and marvel at the enormous Living Reef Lagoon which is teeming with marine life. The charm of Daydream Island lays in its friendly, intimate feel combined with the plethora of fun, fascination and frivolity it offers.

DAY D R E A M I S L A N D

Surrounded by Beauty Just months after its extensive redevelopment, Daydream Island has become a sparkling gem in the Whitsunday Islands. The vaulted ceiling atrium creates an impressive entrance leading to an open plan, light and airy lounge area for guests to relax. Each of the 277 rooms run from this central area to seamlessly border the large lagoonstyle pools, tropical gardens, lush green lawns with views of sparkling blue sea and surrounding islands. Despite its size, the layout of the resort cleverly harnesses an intimate feel. As the afternoon sun sparkles, guests lounge in the soft envelope of the shaded poolside cabanas, others head to the swim-up bar for a refreshing cocktail as the afternoon’s live music act begins to sing sweet sunny melodies into the air. In the early evening light friendly wallabies gather on the lawn. Guests swing their legs from large double hammocks, gazing out to sea and watching the wallabies graze.

Delicious Cuisine With three exciting restaurants to indulge your appetites, dining at Daydream Island means every meal is a mouth-watering indulgence. A sumptuous buffet breakfast fuels your day, located at Graze, buffet restaurant. This unique dining experience is bordered by the Living Reef viewing windows which run the length of the restaurant, complemented by gently cascading waterfalls that create a natural amphitheatre. Guests can enjoy a full-English with the works and eggs cooked how you like, fresh to order. Or sample an extravagant fresh fruit platter with yoghurt, cereal, pastries, pancakes and more. All the while, watching through the glass as the Living Reef marinelife comes to life. For dinner guests can return to Graze for buffet style feasts. Alternatively, for those looking for something more extravagant try the two waterfront restaurants which offer sensational Coral Sea views and a la carte menus. Infinity is the resort’s Asian Fusion restaurant which boasts a Teppanyaki Suite and a fine-dining ambience. The service is impeccable and each dish is hand-crafted and perfectly cooked.

For a more relaxed vibe try Inkstone Kitchen and Bar offering Australian cuisine with a focus on steak and fresh seafood overlooking the pool and beach with freeflow al fresco dining. Inkstone also serves a la carte breakfast for Deluxe Room and Suite guests.

Daydream Believers Each room has been modernised to perfection with delicate white features and a host of creature comforts. Soak in a warm bath, watch the latest movies for free from a large curved T.V. screen and breathe in the fresh sea air from your private terrace.

The Spectacular Living Reef Perhaps the most exciting experience on Daydream Island is the Living Reef ecosystem which is one of the biggest in the southern hemisphere. This free form coral lagoon wraps 200m around the central building, bordering the buffet restaurant and breakfast lounge. This fascinating experience mesmerises both children and adults. Guests are able to enjoy a meal while watching through glass windows as stingrays and other reef fish swim by. The Living Reef experience is not just for show, this carefully constructed ecosystem is the work of dedicated marine biologists who hand-pick and carefully curate the setting. The environment is almost exactly the same as the real coral reef containing 1.5 million litres of filtered fresh sea water. There is plenty of opportunity to interact with the Living Reef through daily Fish Feeding and Stingray Splash education talks hosted by the resident marine biologists. Learn the names of each creature and discover how they live, what they eat and other fascinating facts. For a mesmerising underwater experience without getting wet, head to the underwater observatory which is simply jaw-dropping. This floor to ceiling acrylic window transports you to an under-water world where you can watch the coral breathe as it would in the wild, see enormous shovel nose stingrays glide by, touch the glass and press your nose against the screen to feel as if you are part of this fascinating world. For the more adventurous guests, try the Living Reef Snorkel Experience at the Swim Lagoon. Here you can snorkel in a totally safe, all-weather environment. Hold a sea cucumber, swim with stingrays, dive into a living, breathing reef that is as easy and comfortable as a swimming-pool!

oceanrafting ARE YOU READY FOR THE RIDE OF YOUR LIFE? Ocean Rafting offers a selection of high-speed, life-changing tours around the Whitsunday Islands, combining the very best of iconic experiences. Within the space of seven magical hours you’ll find yourself immersed in an underwater wonderland, snorkelling pristine coral surrounded by a kaleidoscope of tropical fish. Then, set foot on the purest white silica sand in the world on Whitehaven Beach before embarking on a guided bush walk through a national park to arrive at the panoramic lookout of Hill Inlet. Three bucket-list worthy adventures packed into one excursion. Can you handle this much fun? What tours are available? Ocean Rafting provide two main tours, tailored to your preference of snorkelling or spending more time on Whitehaven Beach. Northern Exposure takes you on an exhilarating ride to the northern islands of the Whitsundays for two epic sessions of snorkelling around secret locations surrounding Hook Island. Catch a glimpse of Hayman Island as you glide past to see where the rich and famous hang out in the Whitsundays before arriving at your first snorkel destination. After two snorkelling sites, your high-speed boat zooms toward world-famous Whitehaven Beach. Enjoy a buffet-style lunch on the white sand of Hill Inlet at the Northen end of Whitehaven Beach before embarking on your bush walk to the iconic Hill Inlet lookout, to see the silica swirls among the turquoise and aqua water.

40

The second tour option is Southern Lights, where you visit one snorkelling destination and then enjoy two hours relaxing at the southern end of Whitehaven

Beach. You then get to experience the northern end by Hill Inlet before bush-walking to the Hill Inlet Lookout. What is included in the tour? Other than life-changing experiences and a whole heap of fun, both tours include expert guides who fill you full of information about the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef along the journey. Ocean Rafting’s semi-rigid inflatable vessels are super-fast, making the ride itself part of the adventure. Twist and turn across the waves for a ride that resembles an adrenalin-inspired jet boat adventure for added fun. They are the fastest day-trip boats in the Whitsundays meaning you’ll have more time snorkelling and on the beach by reaching your destinations faster! The buffet lunch can be included for a small additional cost; but the spread of seafood, meat, fruit, bread and salads is certainly worth it! After snorkelling, the bar officially opens; beer, cider, water and soft drinks can be purchased throughout the journey. If you don’t have an underwater camera, no worries! The guides will take photos of your group throughout the day and images can be purchased online a couple of days after your tour. What were the best parts of the tour? The biggest highlight of the tour for me was when our boat cruised up Hill Inlet to deliver us to a special beach within Hill Inlet at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach. Ocean Rafting are the only commercial operator in the world to have access to this exclusive area, so this was an exciting first for me.

THINGS TO DO

Must do Rock scampering at Horseshoe Bay, Bowen Horseshoe Bay is one of the most beautiful bays on the Whitsunday Coast. With enormous sandstone boulders bordering the picturesque bay it is an ideal spot to enjoy some rock scampering and see what interesting creatures you can find in the many rock pools. Horseshoe Bay is also a safe place for families to swim in a sheltered area with a lifeguard on duty and an ideal snorkel site with colourful fringing coral reefs. While you are there make sure you trek to the lookout point and explore the local bush walks.

Must see Hideaway Bay and Dingo Beach

W

elcome to the Whitsundays! A stunning part of the north Queensland coast with 74 beautiful islands to explore. Sheltered by the Great Barrier Reef there are no crashing waves, just calm easy to navigate waterways, perfect for sailing. The Whitsundays is also home to Whitehaven Beach which has been voted the third best beach in the world due to its 98% pure white swirling silica sands.

Hideaway Bay and its sister town Dingo Beach are situated at the northern end of the Whitsundays and boast some of the most untouched beaches and bays in the region. Quiet and secluded, these little hamlets are perfect for those seeking some rest and relaxation on long, sandy beaches with hardly another soul in sight. Endless horizons, sensational sunsets and picturesque views of the more remote Whitsunday Islands can be seen from numerous vantage points.

Must try The Conway Circuit (Formally known as the Great Walk) This 28 km challenging one-way circuit takes you along the mountain ridge of the Conway National Park which runs from the Whitsunday hinterland to Airlie Beach. It will take four to five hours on a mountain bike or three days of walking and camping out under a blanket of stars. You will be rewarded with a very unique experience including the sight of majestic tropical rainforests, hoop pines bursting through the rainforest canopy, rugged, steep, rocky cliffs, a wide variety of native wildlife and spectacular views of the Whitsunday Passage and beyond. If you prefer a shorter circuit try the 2km Kingfisher circuit (walkers only), the 7km Wompoo Walk (shared trail) and the 8.2 km Honeyeater lookout track (shared trail). Two camping areas are located along the circuit, both have toilets, rainwater tanks and storage trunks to keep food away from wildlife.

AY TERMINAL

A Short History Airlie Beach received its name in 1935 by Robert Shephard who was born in Scotland and named the growing hamlet ‘Airlie’ after a much-loved Scottish town called the Parish of Airlie.

THINGS TO DO Airlie Beach

During its formative years Airlie Beach was an isolated outpost that only the most adventurous travellers managed to discover. These times have often been described as the ‘Glory Days’, remembered nostalgically by the early pioneers. In the early 1990’s Airlie Beach became a popular backpacker haven and party town. This legacy still lives on today although in more recent years the town’s reputation has blossomed into a lively tourist mecca. Assisted by the $22 million main-street upgrade and a new foreshore precinct, Airlie Beach is now attracting a more upmarket clientele. These days there is an eclectic mix of young travellers, tourists from overseas and holiday-makers; backpackers, families, couples and groups of friends all visit Airlie Beach for its laid-back charming life-style and sparkling turquoise waters.

Weather Airlie Beach is one of few east coast towns that has a North facing aspect. This means that the town has protection from the prevailing South East Trade Winds. Therefore the township itself is usually balmy and tropical.

Top 5 Activities 1. Take a swim in the Airlie Beach Lagoon 2. Browse the Saturday morning markets 3. Walk the coastal bicentennial walkway 4. Visit Port of Airlie to marvel at the large white boats 5. Experience the vibrant nightlife of restaurants and bars

A tale of the

mud crab and mojito

A

t the top end of Shute Harbour Road (near Port of Airlie) you can’t miss the landmark location that is home to the award winning seafood restaurant Fish D’vine and Australia’s original Rum Bar. At Fish D’vine you can experience the best seafood the Great Barrier Reef and North Queensland has to offer. An Airlie Beach institution and a favourite with both locals and visitors alike the owners and team are passionate about the experience they provide when you visit. Simply authentic. Fish D’vine are a true North Queensland experience, rather than a Sydney or Melbourne restaurant transplanted in the North. Local produce with all the natural laid back charm that encapsulates our locals and makes the Whitsundays such an iconic part of the Great Barrier Reef. The two most loved experiences in the restaurant are the Mud Crab and the world famous Mojitos... The Godfather of the Rum Bar Mark Wyatt aka Dr Rum is now the National Rum Ambassador for Australia, his knowledge and passion of the drink of the sailors and the spirit of the

sugar cane fields has seen Dr Rum break away from just standard service to also providing ‘Rum Journeys’ everything from day time private events to intimate sit down tastings where you select amazing rums and hear stories and history from around the world. Even if you ‘think’ you don’t like Rum, at the Rum Bar they guarantee they can create a cocktail or spirit mix that you’ll love. As for the mud crab Fish D’vine have spent years mastering their own d’vine recipe for Chilli Mud Crab. When ordering you choose how it’s cooked - Chilli Crab, wok tossed in our famous Thai curry sauce served with steamed jasmine rice, Singapore Pepper Crab, wok tossed in a spicy cracked black pepper & butter sauce, served with steamed rice or a natural, fresh crab served chilled w/ crusty bread and butter, house made cocktail sauce. YUM! So what are you waiting for, when visiting Airlie Beach you have to experience Fish D’vine.

Ride to Paradise An Experience Where Adventure and Indulgence Meet

S

kimming across a remote pristine bay in a custom-built jet boat with the invigorating salty sea air rushing past, we see a thatch roof appear from the tropical undergrowth of an untouched paradise location. As we draw closer the full expanse of this paradise begins to open out in front of us. Palm-fringed sprawling green lawns, a white sandy beach, Balinese-style villas and a central building with spacious outdoor living areas. It is hard to believe this will be our home for the night. It feels like we have arrived at a luxury spa retreat and we behave like children discovering a new wonderland, excited to explore the fun and adventure that awaits. Greeted by our hosts we induge in gourmet share platters on the verandah before settling into our living quarters. Guests can choose between shared singles, twin-sharing or luxury private villas upon booking. Keeping with the remote, adventurous spirit of the location everyone can enjoy an open-air bath or shower under the moonlight. We are also free to wander the grounds which boast a plethora of activities for all to enjoy. Plunge into the cool waters of the large resort-style swimming-pool bordered with Balanise pillars and stone-carved statues. Take a soak in the heated spa pool, enjoy a game of tennis, table-tennis or pool. Swing on a hammock by the waterfront, explore the bay on a kayak or a paddle board and at night sit around the fire-pit and share stories. In the evening your hosts cook a delicious dinner which is shared around a large central table where new friends are made and laughter is always easy to find. THE TOUR The one day one night tour departs from Abell Point Marina in Airlie Beach early in the afternoon. Jet over to the Whitsunday Islands in the high-speed comfort of a custom-built catamaran. Discover hidden bays and jump straight from the boat (or hitch a ride to shore on the small boat if you prefer) with your snorkel gear to explore the magical underwater world that awaits. Colourful reef fish, delicate coral gardens and, if you are lucky, a majestic sea turtle may swim by! Return to the resort late afternoon and depart for Whitehaven Beach the following morning. Once again, on the custom-built high-speed catamaran we reach our destination in no time. Our hosts escort us from Tongue Bay, along a tropical rainforest bush track and up to the famous Hill Inlet lookout. Here we can stand on timber lookouts and see the spectacular swirling sands and endless turquoise ocean of Whitehaven Beach. The view is even better than a postcard! Next, we head down to the beach and feel the fine 98% silica sand between our toes, as soft as fresh snow but not as cold! Our guides take us to a small, untouched bay bordered by giant sandstone boulders and away from the crowds where we bathe in the sea. The perfect way to complete our unforgettable trip to paradise. As we return to the marina, civilisation and reality it feels like we have spent the last 24 hours in another world. Perhaps we have.

✓ Amazing sunset sea views from the swimming pool

✓ Every room has a balcony with views of the Coral Sea

✓ Locally owned and operated – friendly personal service ✓ Great value for money full of amenities

In a popular destination like Airlie Beach, it can be hard to find accommodation which ticks all of the boxes and is incredibly affordable. But stop the search, I have found the ideal location for value-seekers! Sunlit Waters Studio Apartments provided a fabulous location for a holiday stay in Airlie Beach. What I noticed straight away upon arrival was that the location couldn’t be more perfect. It’s a short walk from the centre of town, but far enough away from the main street to be very relaxing and peaceful at night. It is a boutique accommodation provider which is perfect, it means less likelihood of neighbour disruption and less people crowding the pool! Sunlit Waters have new owner operators, Chris and Fiona Williamson. I met Fiona upon arrival and was delighted with the personal service. My room was spacious and spotlessly clean. The bed was comfortable with great pillows, I slept wonderfully during my stay and the shower pressure was fantastic! Sunlit Waters have the ability to book a number of Whitsunday experiences and tours, for the same price you would pay at a tour desk. I saved myself the hassle of a walk into town and booked a cruise with Fiona who recommended an adventure which ended up being absolutely unforgettable. After a day out on the water, it was relieving to come back to my studio and use the laundry facilities to freshen up my clothes. I had some local seafood to cook and took advantage of the cooking facilities in my room to create the freshest marinara feast. I sat on my balcony with a glass of wine and watched the Coral Sea change colour as the sun set. I took a quick dip in the pool under the stars before snuggling under the covers. It was a blissful end to an incredible day. Great location, substantial amenities and great value for money, Sunlit Waters Studio Apartments provided the ideal base for my Airlie adventure.
