WELCOME TO NORTH QUEENSLAND

THE HEART OF THE GREAT BARRIER REEF

A

wash with sparkling beaches, vibrant cities and more than 300 annual sunshine hours, Queensland, known as the sunshine state, is truly where Australia shines. With an area of 1,727,000 square kilometres, Queensland is the second largest state in Australia and is five times larger than the United Kingdom! It’s easy to see why the vast inland savannah and endless ribbon of coastline provides visitors with experiences like no other on earth and why it’s not difficult to find your own quiet piece of paradise. Stretching more than 2,300km, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on the planet,

the only one big enough to be seen from outer space. It extends over 14 degrees of latitude, from shallow estuarine areas to deep oceanic waters, giving it a vast and complex natural ecosystem. The Great Barrier Reef parallels the Queensland Coast and is accessible from most destinations. At its heart is the Whitsundays, A string of tropical islands dotted along an idyllic stretch of paradise. The Whitsunday islands are world famous for the luxurious resorts which lay upon them, the azure water which surrounds them as well as the pure white silica sand of Whitehaven Beach and iconic Heart Reef.

DID YOU KNOW? Mackay is one of the best places in Queensland to see a platypus in the wild. Take a day trip to Eungella National Park and watch this unique duck-billed mammal splash among the water of Broken River. Continue the journey northward for a taste of the tropics in Townsville. The cosmopolitan city combines federation architecture with an array of top restaurants and boutique shopping. Soak in the coastal vibe with a stroll along The Strand or get close to nature and cuddle a koala at Billabong Sanctuary. Off the coast of Townsville, Magnetic Island is one of the few islands you can drive to. Take your vehicle on the car ferry and explore many of its 23 beautiful bays.

QUEENSLAND TRIVIA Magnetic Island was named by Lieutenant James Cook in 1770 when the island appeared to affect the magnetic compass on his ship. For a small island, there is much to do on Magnetic Island. Ride bareback into the ocean on a horse trek or discover koalas in the wild with a bush walk to historic WWII forts. Rainforest meets the Great Barrier Reef and nestled in-between these two World Heritage areas is the modern mecca of Cairns, Queensland’s most northern tropical city. Laze on a northern beach or explore the rustic artist village of Kuranda by taking a gondola ride above rainforest canopy.

The gateway to the Whitsunday Islands is Airlie Beach, a backpacking nirvana filled with palmfringed beaches, waterfront parks and alfresco dining restaurants. It is the epitome of the chilled-out Australian beach lifestyle, a blend of fun in the sun followed by an entertaining night scene. South of the Whitsundays, venture to a place where nature comes naturally. The Mackay region is home to quiet beaches, lesser-known tropical islands and Queensland’s only blue river, the Pioneer. It is one of Australia’s best fishing locations with a selection of tidal creeks, inland dams, mangrove systems and deep-water reefs providing a plethora of fish to hook.

QUEENSLAND TRIVIA North Queensland is home to some quirky ‘world’s largest’ items. The world’s largest moth, the Hercules Moth, is found in Northern Queensland with a wingspan of up to 25 centimetres. Lake Echen is home to King fern trees which have the world’s largest fern fronds, up to seven metres long. Inland, Undara National Park has some of the world’s longest and largest lava tube systems. One of the most fascinating areas to explore in Northern Queensland is the Daintree Rainforest. It is the oldest continuously surviving tropical rainforest in the world, thought to be 165 million years old.

DID YOU KNOW? There is an exotic fruit in the Daintree Rainforest known as the Chocolate Pudding Fruit. It is the only fruit on the planet which tastes like chocolate pudding, yet it is low in fat and contains more than four times the vitamin C of an orange; a chocoholics dream come true! You can sample the delicacy at a tropical fruit farm in Cape Tribulation. With so much to see and do, Queensland is a land of possibility. Gaze upon a star, make a wish and fulfil your dreams during your time in the sunshine state. It’s your time to shine!

MISSION BEACH

As the halfway point in-between Townsville and Cairns, take the opportunity to meander barefoot along one of Mission Beach’s pristine shorelines, where the rainforest fringes the glimmering turquoise tide. Sound’s magical? This is only the start of why Mission Beach should be on your travel itinerary. Mission Beach is one of the few places along the Queensland coast where two World Heritage areas meet, the Wet Tropics rainforest and the Great Barrier Reef. This stretch of paradise is also one of the closest mainland destinations to the Great Barrier Reef, only 38km away. Visitors wanting a unique diving or snorkelling experience are in luck, as it only takes an hour to reach some of the reef’s most beautiful and unique coral, meaning more time in the water viewing nature at its finest and less time on a boat. 14km of tropical sandy beaches line the four rustic villages which collectively make up Mission Beach. The villages of Bingil Bay, Mission Beach, Wongaling Beach and South Mission Beach each add their own unique vibe to this relaxed community.

For friendly local knowledge head to the Mission Beach Tourist Information Centre. They can give you the best tips on what to see, where to eat and where best to stay during your visit. Make sure to say you read about them first in Tripping Magazine!

The village of Mission Beach is a great place to start your holiday. Stroll the eclectic array of gift stores and art galleries, then familiarize yourself with some of the town’s popular eateries, from cafes to bars and gourmet restaurants. Don’t let the relaxed ambience and casual way of life fool you, hiding among the villages are some of the best seafood delicacies and resort luxuries on the Queensland coast. Alongside breathtaking scenery, Mission Beach is home to unique and endangered wildlife. The Southern Cassowary is one of the most extraordinary looking large birds in the world, and the rainforest surrounding Mission Beach is where the majority of them reside. If you’re lucky, you may see one walking through bush or even through the grounds of your accommodation, though weighing on average 60kg, it’s advisable never to approach them.

The world’s most powerful bite The largest of all living reptiles, the saltwater crocodile, is as captivating as it is fearsome. The sound which echoes from its powerful jaws as they snap shut is both indescribable and unforgettable. As most people are unlikely to see a crocodile in its natural habitat, Billabong Sanctuary is one of the best places on Earth to see this humongous reptile up close. Feeding time is one of the sanctuary’s most anticipated attractions. “You could hear a pin drop as the crocodile’s lunch dangles above the water. The excited crowd is fixated on the water, waiting for the all mighty reptile to launch itself vertical from the water. Using their powerful tails these monster crocodiles lunge out of the water almost to their back legs as they take food offered by the rangers. The audience gasps as its jaws strike at the food, in a display of power and raw instinct.” If this experience isn’t on your North Queensland bucket-list, it should be. DID YOU KNOW? CROCODILES HAVE THE STRONGEST BITE FORCE OF ANY ANIMAL IN THE WORLD, EVEN BEATING A GREAT WHITE SHARK. They can easily crush you with their jaws. A human can apply 100 pounds of pressure per square inch with their jaw where as a crocodile can apply up to 5,000 pounds of pressure. Despite this, they have very little ‘opening strength,’ meaning you can quite easily keep a crocodile’s mouth shut with rubber bands. are living dinosaurs and the largest reptiles in the world. They first appeared in the Mesozoic Era 240 million years ago and can live up to 80 years of age. DID YOU KNOW? THE REFERENCE TO ‘SALTWATER’ IS MISLEADING. WHILE THEY CAN BE FOUND IN SALTWATER, THESE CROCODILES ARE JUST AS OFTEN FOUND IN FRESHWATER; IN RIVERS, SWAMPS AND BILLABONGS, SOMETIMES HUNDREDS OF KILOMETRES INLAND. Breeding time is from November through to March during the summer, where males are more active and on the move to seek a mate. A crocodile attack can be deadly and unfortunately, on average, there is a death in Australia each year due to an attack. However, put into perspective, the same number of people in Australia die each year from a bee sting. So while these reptiles most certainly should be respected, they shouldn’t be feared. They play an important part in Australia’s natural wetland ecosystem and are magnificent creatures. Discover more by attending a croc feeding show for yourself. Cuddle a koala, pet a kangaroo and hold a wombat. Get up close and personal with your favourite native Australian animal, at Billabong Sanctuary.

DID YOU KNOW?

Crocodiles have the strongest bite force of any animal in the world, even beating a great white shark.

Billabong Sanctuary Waltzing Matilda is about as Australian as it gets and, to experience an array of wildlife by an Aussie Billabong, take a walk on the wild side at Townsville’s Billabong Sanctuary. Australia’s native animals are as weird and wonderful as they come. From the cuddly koala to the bounding kangaroo, Billabong Sanctuary lets you get up close and personal to your favourite furry, feathered and scaly friends. Billabong Sanctuary is based around three habitats; eucalypt forest, rainforest and wetlands, with a large billabong at its heart. Wetland birds come and go from the sanctuary as they please and, as you take a stroll around the lapping edge of the billabong, keep an eye out for the friendly turtles who greet you at the water’s edge. Whether you visit morning or afternoon, there are always guided shows and interactive opportunities to touch or feed many of the sanctuary’s inhabitants. If you leave Airlie Beach after breakfast and head north to Townsville, you will not miss any of the experiences as there is a 1 p.m. as well as a 3:15 p.m. crocodile feeding and also the opportunity to get up close to a koala both morning at 11:15 a.m. and afternoon at 4 p.m. Billabong Sanctuary is Australia’s best interactive wildlife experience. At wildlife encounters you can pat a dingo, hand-feed a cassowary, wrap a python around your neck, hold a lizard and a small crocodile all for free. At the all-inclusive wildlife talks, you will learn about the ecology, the habits and unusual characteristics of Australia’s unique animals. Each ranger is passionate about the welfare of the animals at the sanctuary. Their care and devotion is evident in the presentations they give. Billabong Sanctuary has 2 star attractions when it comes to crocodiles. Bully who is the larger of the two weighing in at 750 kgs and measuring 4.5m in length. Bully arrived at Billabong Sanctuary in 2013 trapped at Halifax, north of Ingham and due to his weight, his crate had to be transferred into his enclosure by crane. Then there is Jupiter, who is a whopping 500 kgs and 4.3m in length. Jupiter was caught off Townsville’s Strand beach in early February 2016. Estimated at 60 years of age, Jupiter has battle scars down the side of his body from confrontations with other large crocodiles. Make a day of it at Billabong Sanctuary by enjoying a coffee and meal from Blinky Bill Café or bring your own supplies to enjoy a barbecue beside the tropically landscaped pool.

HISTORY Magnetic Island is called Yunbenun by the Wulgurukaba people who are the Traditional Aboriginal Owners of the island and lived there for thousands of years. In 1770, Captain James Cook sailed passed on his ship, the Endeavour, and, while he was there, his compass was affected by a strange magnetic force on the island which is why it is now called ‘Magnetic Island’.

GEOGRAPHY Magnetic Island was part of the Australian mainland until 7500 years ago when sea levels rose cutting it off. The island is composed mostly of granite, the result of a volcanic force that pushed molten rock up to the earth’s surface 275 million years ago. Much of the volcanic rock has eroded away, however, the underlying granite has decomposed into fault lines and created the distinctive granite boulders and rocky headlands we see today. The island is famed for its untouched natural beauty. There are 23 bays and beaches, some of which are only accessible by foot or boat. Mount Cook is the highest point on the island and it is fringed by magnificently tangled rainforest jungle, vine forests, eucalypt woods and emerald green hoop pine trees.

THINGS TO DO

MUST DO A Nature Walk Experience nature and discover the island’s extensive network of walking trails. There are 25km of tracks to explore on the island, taking you through natural rainforest and areas of thick bushland. See a koala in the wild and admire the dry wattles and beautiful barks of eucalypts. Emerge from the undergrowth and be amazed by the stunning lookout points boasting fantastic views of the Coral Sea. The most popular walk is Forts Walk which combines history with scenery and nature. The walk takes roughly 90 minutes and will open out onto stunning look out points, open rainforest with koalas and a WWII observation tower with command post and gun emplacements still intact.

GETTING AROUND The scenic roads are great fun to drive on and the best way to explore the island. Each bend reveals a different jaw-dropping bay or landscape to marvel at and it is all you can do to concentrate on the road ahead. Most places are suitable for any vehicle, however, there are a couple of 4 wheel drive only tracks, so if you are in a hire car be mindful of this. The Topless Car Company rent bright pink topless cars which are a fun and unique way of exploring the island, with the wind rushing through your hair and the sun on your face, this is island living at its finest!

MUST SEE Picnic Bay With a pristine coastline, a tranquil tropical setting and the iconic jetty, Picnic Bay is a spectacular location. It is the perfect place to enjoy a relaxing swim, indulge in some beachside dining or try your hand at fishing on the jetty. Jump in the water with your snorkel in-hand and explore the abundant marine life of Picnic Bay or see what you can spot from above while taking a stroll along the jetty. If you are lucky, you might spot a turtle or a dugong.

Sleep in The

Koala’s Playground Magnetic Island’s Best Budget Option, Bungalow Bay Koala Village YHA and Koala Park

IS CUDDLING A KOALA HIGH UP ON YOUR AUSTRALIAN ADVENTURE BUCKET-LIST? It’s little wonder, these cute and iconic marsupials are one of the most popular animals on the planet, but completely unique to Australia. It often surprises visitors to learn, that there are only three states in Australia where you are allowed to cuddle a koala; Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia. So make the most of your Queensland adventure by placing Bungalow Bay Koala Village on Magnetic Island at the top of your must-do destination list. Renowned for popular animal experiences, Bungalow Bay Koala Village is the ONLY resort in Australia that has its own onsite wildlife park. Not only can you cuddle a koala, but the wildlife park provides ample opportunity for many handson wildlife experiences; including holding a big python (snake), holding a baby saltwater crocodile, holding big lizards, turtles and even feeding large parrots from your own lips. Koality Fact: Koalas have two thumbs on each hand for gripping when holding food and climbing – and for holding on tight when you are getting a koala cuddle!

26

CONQUER YOUR FEAR Snakes, crocodiles and lizards. They aren’t everyone’s cup of tea! However, the more you know about animals that scare you, the more you can put your fears to rest. Bungalow Bay Koala Park is the ideal place to face your fear and do it anyway. There are three daily wildlife presentations, where in-house guests, day visitors and island residents have the opportunity to learn all about the unique Aussie animals of Magnetic Island, through an interpretative and hands-on approach. The tour with knowledgeable rangers lasts approximately two hours and is within the wildlife park. Drape a python over your shoulders and feel the unique scales of a native snake as it moves in your hands. Hold a juvenile crocodile and touch its prehistoric skin and get up-close-and-personal with a cheeky tropical parrot as you feed it seeds from your hand – or lips! All animal experiences within the koala village are free of charge, (included in your entry fee); excluding cuddling a koala, which incurs a fee and includes a souvenir photograph. SLEEP ON THE REEF

Bungalow Bay is home to North Queensland’s newest baby koala, Cody. A baby koala is called a ‘Joey’ and already Cody the Joey has been interacting with other resident koalas and visitors at the boutique koala park. Cody was born in Townsville at Billabong Sanctuary and was recently relocated to Bungalow Bay to boost the resident koala population.

The Great Barrier Reef is a dream destination for people from all over the world. And understandably so. The expansive reef system is home to a diverse kaleidoscope of underwater colour and wonder. Located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park, Magnetic Island’s golden beaches, coral reef, diverse wildlife and accommodation choices to suit any budget make this tropical island so enticing.

Koality fact: Despite commonly being called ‘koala bears’ they aren’t a bear! Koalas are a marsupial. 200 years ago, European settlers had never seen a marsupial and did not know about pouched animals, like the kangaroo. The bear was the closet mammal the koala looked like.

Bungalow Bay Koala Village has a range of accommodation to suit every traveller; from camping sites to A-frame double and twin bungalows. Each bungalow provides you with a balcony, access to shared bathroom facilities,

A split-system air conditioner plus ceiling fan allows you to turn your bungalow into a cool retreat for when you’ve soaked up your fair share of poolside sunshine. free-standing offering superb privacy and are semiself-contained, making food prep a breeze. This is particularly convenient if you’re travelling with small children. Palm Bungalows are ideal for couples, but also for parents with up to two small children, as the day bed can be utilised as two small single beds. The small kitchenette provides convenient facilities to heat a bottle or make the kids snacks for the day. The location of the Bungalows is very convenient, it’s a short walk to the Reef View Hotel, and equally it’s also a short walk to the Resort Centre, which provides the island’s main pool (with swim-up bar). The Resort Centre is the hub for booking island activities, such as a romantic sunset sail, a flight over Heart Reef or a round of golf at the world-famed course at Dent Island. Why we love Hamilton Island… White sand beaches, azure blue water, coral brimming with a kaleidoscope of sea life and plenty of palm trees to laze under. Lounging poolside with a good book, swimming up to the bar for a cocktail and smiling because life feels amazing. Hamilton Island is close enough to the mainland to make it an

easy escape, but it feels far enough away to evoke those laid-back tropical feelings of pure bliss. It’s the quintessential place where you can ‘do it all or nothing at all.’ When staying at Palm Bungalows, there are three resort pools to choose from and a range of non-motorised watercraft is free-of-charge to use including SUP’s, catamarans and snorkelling equipment. Free-of-charge island-shuttle transfers makes getting to every destination super easy, including One Tree Hill for sunset cocktails or the island marina for Italian pizza. Must-do adrenalin tour… One of the unique benefits of Hamilton Island is its size, its big enough to incorporate more than 20km of hiking trails through a national park. Only 30 per cent of Hamilton Island is allowed to be developed, leaving 70 per cent of pristine nature to trek through to private beaches and spectacular viewpoints. On this particular vacay, I was more focused on rest and relaxation; but I had heard about this beautiful ‘Instagrammable’ swing on the beach at the remote Coral Cove. I thought the only way you could access Coral Cove was to trek up and over the hills behind

the resort, but to my delight, I discovered a fun ATV Tour which meant I could take in the incredible island vistas without breaking a sweat. I let my husband take control of the driving so we were both in our happy places, he was revving up the dirt tracks following our guide while I was taking in the gorgeous scenery. The ATV Tour is fully guided, lasts approximately one-and-a-half hours and takes you to two spectacular elevated lookouts as well as the sublime Coral Cove. Although it wasn’t my first time on the island, our guide provided interesting commentary and shared historical information about Hamilton Island from the viewpoints. It was the best way to spend a morning. Did you know? Hamilton Island is proudly and uniquely Australian owned by the Oatley Family, who have invested over $450 million in upgrading the island’s infrastructure, amenities and services! There is also a home on Hamilton Island that was once owned by Beatle, George Harrison. You can find out more interesting facts like this on the ATV Tour.

How to get there… Hamilton Island is fortunate to have its own airport, with direct flights arriving from Sydney, Melbourne, Brisbane and Cairns. If you’re road-tripping through North Queensland, then a convenient and affordable option is with Cruise Whitsundays. Located at Airlie Beach’s Port of Airlie, Cruise Whitsundays offers multiple trips every day to Hamilton Island. The spacious vessels are airconditioned and provide indoor or outdoor seating to make the most of the views along your journey past Whitsunday islands. Sightings of sea life are common, with dolphins, turtles and even dugongs seen during the journey. Whales are also spotted breaching during migration season in the winter. Free tea and coffee is available on board and alcohol and snacks can be purchased. To book… Palm Bungalows start from $155 per person, per night, twin share* and include return ferry transfers for two from the Port of Airlie. Also, children 12 and under stay and eat free*. Visit hamiltonisland.com.au/deals-and-packages/ locals-offer to book your island escape.

DAY DREAM ISLAND

A

lmost a year after its extensive renovation, Daydream Island has become a sparkling gem in the Whitsunday Islands. The vaulted ceiling in the atrium creates an impressive entrance leading to an open plan, light and airy lounge area for guests to relax.

Guests can enjoy a full-English with the works and eggs cooked how you like, fresh to order. Or sample an extravagant fresh fruit platter with yoghurt, cereal, pastries, pancakes and more. All the while, watching through the glass as the Living Reef marinelife comes to life.

free form coral lagoon wraps 200m around the central building, bordering the buffet restaurant and breakfast lounge. This fascinating experience mesmerises both children and adults. Guests are able to enjoy a meal while watching through glass windows as stingrays and other reef fish swim by.

Each of the 277 rooms run from this central area to seamlessly border the large lagoonstyle pools, tropical gardens, lush green lawns with views of sparkling blue sea and surrounding islands. Despite its size, the layout of the resort cleverly harnesses an intimate feel.

For dinner guests can return to Graze for buffet style feasts.

The Living Reef experience is not just for show, this carefully constructed ecosystem is the work of dedicated marine biologists who hand-pick and carefully curate the setting. The environment is almost exactly the same as the real coral reef containing 1.5 million litres of filtered fresh sea water.

As the afternoon sun sparkles, guests lounge in the soft envelope of the shaded poolside cabanas, others head to the swim-up bar for a refreshing cocktail as the afternoon’s live music act begins to sing sweet sunny melodies into the air.

Infinity is the resort’s Asian Fusion restaurant which boasts a Teppanyaki Suite and a fine-dining ambience. The service is impeccable and each dish is hand-crafted and perfectly cooked.

Alternatively, for those looking for something more extravagant try the two waterfront restaurants which offer sensational Coral Sea views and a la carte menus.

In the early evening light friendly wallabies gather on the lawn. Guests swing their legs from large double hammocks, gazing out to sea and watching the wallabies graze.

For a more relaxed vibe try Inkstone Kitchen and Bar offering Australian cuisine with a focus on steak and fresh seafood overlooking the pool and beach with freeflow al fresco dining. Inkstone also serves a la carte breakfast for Deluxe Room and Suite guests.

Daydream Believers

With three exciting restaurants to indulge your appetites, dining at Daydream Island means every meal is a mouth-watering indulgence.

Each room has been modernised to perfection with delicate white features and a host of creature comforts. Soak in a warm bath, watch the latest movies for free from a large curved T.V. screen and breathe in the fresh sea air from your private terrace.

A sumptuous buffet breakfast fuels your day, located at Graze, buffet restaurant. This unique dining experience is bordered by the Living Reef viewing windows which run the length of the restaurant, complemented by gently cascading waterfalls that create a natural amphitheatre.

The Spectacular Living Reef Perhaps the most exciting experience on Daydream Island is the Living Reef ecosystem which is one of the biggest in the southern hemisphere. This

There is plenty of opportunity to interact with the Living Reef through daily Fish Feeding and Stingray Splash education talks hosted by the resident marine biologists. Learn the names of each creature and discover how they live, what they eat and other fascinating facts. For a mesmerising underwater experience without getting wet, head to the underwater observatory which is simply jaw-dropping. This floor to ceiling acrylic window transports you to an under-water world where you can watch the coral breathe as it would in the wild, see enormous shovel nose rays glide by, touch the glass and press your nose against the screen to feel as if you are part of this fascinating world. For the more adventurous guests, try the Living Reef Snorkel Experience at the Swim Lagoon. Here you can snorkel in a totally safe, all-weather environment. Hold a sea cucumber, swim with stingrays, dive into a living, breathing reef that is as easy and comfortable as a swimming-pool!

THINGS TO DO Bowen MUST DO Hit the beach With eight award-winning beaches to explore, Bowen offers beachgoers a veritable paradise to explore.

MUST SEE The Bowen Foreshore The Front Beach foreshore in Bowen has recently been redeveloped with fun family activities in mind including the Bowen waterpark for younger kids. For older kids the foreshore is a great place to scramble across rockpools and along the beach enjoying nature and marveling at marine life. There is also some of the best fringing reefs of the Queensland coast lying just a few metres offshore.

Discover...

With soft-as-silk white sand and crystal-clear turquoise water, Horseshoe Bay is the jewel in the Bowen crown. Perfect for swimming, it also features a nearby coral reef, ideal for snorkeling. Queen’s Beach is Bowen’s longest with 5km of white sand to stroll. Free public barbecues line the beachfront and are set among tropical landscaping, offering an idyllic location to experience a beachfront barbecue at sunset. Dive Into The Whitsunday's T

he Whitsundays is now home to an Australian and Great Barrier Reef first; avid snorkellers and divers will be treated to an underwater wonderland with the installation of underwater art in The Whitsundays Great Barrier Reef Marine Park. Four Australian artists were chosen to have their sculptures submerged and on display in various key locations throughout the marine park in a bid to provide a new experience for guests travelling to the Whitsundays and to help the marine tourism industry recover after Tropical Cyclone Debbie. New South Wales artist Col Henry’s striking ‘Turtle Dream’ is a 15-tonne stainless steel creation with well over 800hrs of work going into creating the Hawksbill Turtle that is on display at Langford Spit. Local Whitsundays artist Adriaan Vanderlugt has two sculptures on display throughout the marine park. His ‘Maori Wrasse’ located at Blue Pearl Bay, is an impressive almost four-metre high sculpture, and his ‘Manta Ray’ located in Manta Ray Bay bares the indigenous markings and stories of

Whitsundays Traditional Owners, the Ngaro people. Cairns-based artist Brian Robinson also has two sculptures on display. The first, ‘Migration of the Mantas’, shows six large Manta Rays that appear to be schooling. The remarkable artwork measures 4m x 6m and is made from concrete and stainless steel. Brian’s second sculpture titled ‘Bywa’, depicts a Dreamtime story about the reef, creation and marine life. This is an intertidal piece planned to be installed at Horseshoe bay in Bowen this month. Jessa Lloyd is working on an enormous creation ‘Anthozoa’ which is a 4-metre-high concrete single coral polyp. This creation is in its final stages of completion and scheduled to go into its location at Blue Pearl Bay in early 2020. The underwater sculptures provide a new experience for travellers and marine enthusiasts. These unique artworks have been installed at various popular sites around The Whitsundays and will not only provide amazing scenery for guests to enjoy, they will also act a new bases for coral growth and animal shelter.

MUST EXPERIENCE The Whitsunday Islands This spectacular collection of archipelago tropical islands was named by Cook in 1770 and is the largest group of offshore islands in Australia. The region’s sparkling seas, cradled by the Great Barrier Reef, are dotted with an array of islands, coral cays, fringing coral reefs and stunning beaches. The Whitsundays is the Heart of Island Escapes with a tropical island resort to suit everyone’s holidays needs, a veritable feast of indulgent experiences all within short distance of each other and the Great Barrier Reef.

By far the majority of the Whitsunday Islands are designated national park, leaving them uninhabited and in their purest natural state for all to enjoy. Of the 74, five islands have resorts offering a range of accommodation and attractions.

42

The largest in the Whitsunday group, Whitsunday Island is home to world famous Whitehaven Beach. Pure, white, silica sand glistens along this 7km stretch of stunning beach, the jewel in the region’s crown. Camping on one of the beaches and waking up to expansive sea views is an absolutely thrilling experience. These are just some of the reasons why most of the Whitsundays experiences and locations are consistently rated as #1 not only in Australia but also all over the world.

RED CAT ADVENTURES Ride to Paradise

An Experience Where Adventure and Indulgence Meet

S

kimming across a remote pristine bay in a custom-built jet boat with the invigorating salty sea air rushing past, we see a thatch roof appear from the tropical undergrowth of an untouched paradise location. As we draw closer the full expanse of this paradise begins to open out in front of us. Palm-fringed sprawling green lawns, a white sandy beach, Balinese-style villas and a central building with spacious outdoor living areas. It is hard to believe this will be our home for the night. It feels like we have arrived at a luxury spa retreat and we behave like children discovering a new wonderland, excited to explore the fun and adventure that awaits. Greeted by our hosts we induge in gourmet share platters on the verandah before settling into our living quarters. Guests can choose between dormstyle accommodation, twin-sharing or luxury private villas upon booking.

44

Keeping with the remote, adventurous spirit of the location everyone can enjoy an open-air bath or shower under the moonlight. We are also free to

wonder the grounds which boasts a plethora of activities for all to enjoy.

gardens and, if you are lucky, a majestic sea turtle may swim by!

Plunge into the cool waters of the large resort-style swimming-pool bordered with balanise pillars and stone-carved statues. Take a soak in the heated spa pool, enjoy a game of tennis, table-tennis or pool. Swing on a hammock by the waterfront, explore the bay on a kayak or a paddle board and at night sit around the fire-pit and share stories.

Return to the resort late afternoon and depart for Whitehaven Beach the following morning.

In the evening your hosts cook a delicious dinner which is shared around a large central table where new friends are made and laughter is always easy to find. The Tour The one day one night tour departs from Abell Point Marina in Airlie Beach early in the afternoon. Jet over to the Whitsunday Islands in the high-speed comfort of a custom-built catamaran. Discover hidden bays and jump straight from the boat (or hitch a ride to shore on the small boat if you prefer) with your snorkel gear to explore the magical underwater world that awaits. Colourful reef fish, delicate coral

Once again, on the custom-built high-speed catamaran we reach our destination in no time. Our hosts escort us from Tongue Bay, along a tropical rainforest bush track and up to the famous Hill Inlet lookout. Here we can stand on timber lookouts and see the spectacular swirling sands and endless turquoise ocean of Whitehaven Beach. The view is even better than a postcard! Next, we head down to the beach and feel the fine 98% silica sand between our toes, as soft as fresh snow but not as cold! Our guides take us to a small, untouched bay bordered by giant sandstone boulders and away from the crowds where we bathe in the sea. The perfect way to complete our unforgettable trip to paradise. As we return to the marina, civilisation and reality it feels like we have spent the last 24 hours in another world. Perhaps we have.

Snorkelling the pristine fringing coral reefs of the Whitsunday Islands is an ideal environment for first timers and a great opportunity for children to give it a go. If you don’t have an underwater camera, no worries! The guides will take photos of your group throughout the day and images can be purchased online a couple of days after your tour. What were the best parts of the tour? The biggest highlight of the tour for me was when our boat cruised up Hill Inlet to deliver us to a special beach within Hill Inlet at the northern end of Whitehaven Beach. Ocean Rafting are the only commercial operator in the world to have access to this exclusive area, so this was an exciting first for us.

Absolutely, in fact, after enjoying a romantic evening there with my husband, I have already booked a three bedroom apartment for when friends are visiting later this year. Sunlit Waters Studio Apartments

20 Airlie Cresent, Airlie Beach

07 49466352 | www.sunlitwaters.com

With sweeping views across the Coral Sea, a hillside infinity pool and easy walking distance to Airlie Beach, Sunlit Waters Studio Apartments enjoys serenity and accessibility with a boutique feel. This quiet location sets a perfect stage for holidaymakers looking to relax and unwind yet still be close to the action when they want to explore.

Was it easy to book tours?

Recently awarded Bronze for Self-Contained Accommodation at the Whitsunday Tourism Awards, these studio apartments are great value for money, exceptionally clean and hosted by two of the nicest people in the Whitsundays!

We went on the Great Barrier Reef Tour with Cruise Whitsunday as Fiona explained we did not have to get wet if we did not want to as this tour provided the semi-submersible to see the reef.

We hear a first-hand experience from a group of ladies visiting the Whitsundays on their annual get away and reunion. They come from Barraba NSW, Manilla NSW and New Zealand. After researching Sunlit Waters online and seeing the outstanding reviews, the three ladies knew they had made the right decision.

Yes, Fiona and Chris also have great knowledge of the area suggesting many little day trips so we could explore. Everything was made easy with Fiona suggesting trips that suited our age.

Fiona also recommended we take the helicopter ride to get the best view on the reef. Our next trip was with Whitehaven Express. Fiona explained it was a family run business and we all liked that idea. We got to see the incredible Hill Inlet and had an amazing BBQ lunch on the beach.

This company also had the glass bottom boat for viewing the coral. Would you recommend Sunlit Waters to a friend? Yes, definitely. The ambience, personal service and comfort were all first-class! We will be back.

What did you like most about your stay? The host and hostess’ friendliness and the help they provided with booking our tours. They also the advised us on small day trips to Bowen, Cape Gloucester, Conway Beach ( George’s Dinner) and Sarina to the Sugar Shed. This was such an insight to the area. We also all loved the view from our apartments – it took our breath away! How were the rooms and what features did you like best? The rooms were very comfortable and the view over the marina and pool were just spectacular, exactly as described by the advertising. The cleanliness was 100% and we just loved the soft towels in the bathrooms! The relaxed friendliness of Sunlit Waters was something we will always remember, plus the three small resident dogs! Tell us a bit about how your hosts made your stay special? Chris and Fiona made our stay so unforgettable from the moment we arrived. Greeting us with happiness, open hospitality and caring natures. Every day they checked on us making sure we had everything we needed.
