CROCODILE ADVENTURES Is a truly immersive, modern wildlife experience set between the Coral Sea and the magnificent Macalister Range 40km north of Cairns. The Estuarine Crocodiles are bred on the premises are raised for their skins and meat. Visitors have the opportunity witness first-hand how a crocodile farm works, learning about the sustainable farming of wildlife working in harmony with habitat conservation. Hartleys Crocodile Farm is an “immersion exhibit”. This means the animals are displayed in surroundings that not only reflect their own habitats but also give viewers an exclusive look into the daily life of these amazing animals. Nowhere else is it possible for visitors to obtain such an intimate insight into the biology and behaviour of crocodiles. Nineteen crocs ranging in size from 2.5m to 5m cruise the waters, laze on the bank or build their nests, interacting with each other just as they would in the wild as well as keeping all the other residents of the lagoon on their toes!

Daily Snake Show at 2pm With the world’s smallest and the world’s largest python species, some of the deadliest snakes on earth and some living jewels with amazing patterns and colours there are some truly amazing species of snake that will delight everyone! Hartley’s has over 70 species of reptiles and amphibians with a brand new Reptile Exhibit opening in July 2017. The new exhibit will feature more than 20 separate displays showcasing some amazing, colourful and fascinating frogs, lizards, snakes and tortoises from Australia and abroad. Whether you love snakes or not you should check out their new Reptastic experience! Reptastic offers a rare opportunity to get up close and personal with lots of splendid reptiles. This unique, premium experience is available for a limited number of guests and allows you to be guided by their passionate reptile keepers as you get up close with chameleons, giant pythons, American Alligators, blue-tongued lizards and exotic tortoises. WHITSUNDAY RESORT WHY DID YOU DECIDE TO STAY AT BIG4 ADVENTURE WHITSUNDAY RESORT? We were looking for a family friendly holiday destination with lots of activities for our young family in a safe welcoming environment. We discovered BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort had just been awarded Gold in the Queensland Tourism Awards, and after looking at their website, we could see they were exactly what we were looking for.

WHAT WAS YOUR STAY LIKE? It was very impressive, start to finish. We stayed in one of their 2 bedroom cabins which was open-plan, spacious and modern with a private garden. The park grounds were spectacular, with 26 acres of landscaped botanic gardens and a huge lagoon-style swimming-pool with slides and water features. Enough to keep our kids occupied all day!

WHAT OTHER FACILITIES DID THE RESORT HAVE? When we managed to get the kids away from the pool, there was plenty of other activities to keep them entertained. We took them to the two giant jumping pillows, the 18-hole mini golf, outdoor cinema, tennis court, pedal carts and Animal Park. There is also a selection of scheduled activities available where the kids could make new friends and learn a new craft or have fun outdoors.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND BIG4 ADVENTURE WHITSUNDAY RESORT TO A FRIEND? Yes, in fact we already have! We are booked to come back with them next year and are looking forward to trying out their new waterslide park.

CANOPY TOURS WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS TOUR? We wanted to experience the rainforest up close and when we heard about Jungle Surfing, the kids were so excited, we just had to give it a try! Jungle Surfing is a series of tree platforms and ziplines offering a fabulous mixture of exhilaration and education. WHAT MADE THIS TOUR SO SPECIAL? Immersing ourselves in nature and whizzing through a rainforest canopy is an experience I will treasure forever. MAGNETIC ISLAND WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS TOUR? We liked the idea of exploring Magnetic Island from the sea. From doing our research we noticed there were many secluded bays and beaches inaccessible from land. A tour with Aquascene meant we could experience these remote places and see parts of the island unseen by most tourists.

WHAT WAS THE TOUR LIKE? â€œIt was a truly memorable experience and we loved every minute of it! Aquascene owner/operators Adam and Stephanie Hinks, are friendly and knowledgeable, having lived on the Island for over 30 years and now raising their four children here, they know what makes a memorable day on the water. The tour is personalised, Adam adjusting the itinerary to suit the group. The boat itself is comfortable, spacious and stable so we felt at ease at all times. Magnetic Island is stunning with rocky outcrops, headlands, bays and native bush that are only visible from the outside by sea. The boat is a shallow draft platform vessel, able to cruise close to the land and pull-up at beaches. Our first stop was for a snorkel. Some of the guests had never tried snorkeling before and Adam was happy to teach them offering buoyant noodles to keep beginners safe and afloat. We all enjoyed snorkeling the fringing coral reefs in the remote bay before jumping back on-board and moving along to another stop where we walked along the beach. Untouched and unseen from land, it was our own private bay. After this we had a delicious morning tea with cakes, biscuits, fresh fruit, tea and coffee. To finish off the tour Adam took us to the best fishing spot on the island. Here, he helped us bait the hooks and throw a line in the water. He was good to his word as everyone on-board caught a fish!

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE TOUR? Sitting back in comfort and watching the island glide serenely by. The fresh ocean breeze on our face and in our hair, the sun shining and our tour guide pointing out different outcrops and bays. I also liked that it was a family run tour, it was personal and intimate, and we all left feeling like weâ€™d had an amazing experience.

A black water dump for RV’s is nearby and free to use. All Home Hill asks in return is to spend some time in its beautiful town. The volunteers at the Tourist Information Centre in the old Railway Station across the road from the comfort stop can offer suggestions on where to eat, where to grab barbecue supplies or where to explore.

CORAL BLEACHING Feeling the heat this summer? So is the Great Barrier Reef. Did you know that the Great Barrier Reef is the largest living organism on the planet – teeming with millions of life forms? But despite its enormous size (roughly the size of Japan) the Reef is vulnerable to the smallest increase in sea surface temperature. Last summer a record breaking underwater heatwave swept across our oceans and bleached large swathes of the Reef. The Reef is now bleaching for the second consecutive year.

Coral bleaching, driven by global warming, occurs when the ocean stays too hot for too long and the corals expel the tiny colourful algae that live within their translucent tissue, leaving the appearance of a white coral skeleton. The corals can recover but they need time. Devastatingly, the second mass coral bleaching event has been confirmed by the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park Authority. At this stage, it’s hard to say how much of the coral will be killed. Last year 22% of the corals died. The Australian Marine Conservation Society caught up with Julian Negri from Bundaberg Aqua Scuba to find out more about the situation. Q. Hi Julian– Can you give us an update on what you’re seeing on the Reefs off Bundaberg? Each summer we have been noticing a higher percentage of partially and fully bleached corals. Some years there would only be a very slight increase compared to the previous year and in other years the difference can be quite significant. This summer, with the average temperatures being higher (our region has had one of the hottest Februarys on record this year) we have noticed a much higher rate of bleaching. Q. How long have you been diving on the Great Barrier Reef? I have been diving on the southern Great Barrier Reef and the fringing reefs off the coast of Bundaberg since 1987 when I first moved to the area and began working as a diving instructor. Q. Why are you passionate about the Reef?

Q. Do you have hope for the future of our Great Barrier Reef? At this point in time I truly have grave concerns for the future of the Reef. Since I started diving on the reef 30 years ago, there has been a drastic decline in the percentage of living coral on the Reef. Some studies say up to a 50% loss of live corals since the 1970s. At the moment, not enough is being done to redress the global problems that are causing the decline of the Reef. Most of our politicians only seem interested in short term gains to get votes that do not help our environment and are not prepared to endorse long term strategies that would work toward preserving the Reef because they a have cost at the present time. We need a greater number of people to put pressure on our politicians around the globe to take the steps that are needed. If you are not a conservationist and not greatly concerned about the environment you should still be concerned about the loss of jobs and revenue that would occur if we lost our greatest tourism assent.

Apart from the fact that the Reef is one the greatest natural wonders on our planet and it is beautiful and awe inspiring to dive and snorkel on, the Reef has provided me with an income for the past 30 years. I can assure you that you do not get rich owning a dive shop but over the years I have been able to raise a family, buy a home and send my kids to university on an income derived from taking people out to see the beauty of the Reef. Along the way, I have also provided employment for many others to do the same. The Great Barrier Reef provides employment for 70 000 people who love and respect it. These jobs and opportunities will be lost if nothing is done to protect the Reef.

Stretching more than 2,300km, the Great Barrier Reef is the largest living structure on the planet, the only one big enough to be seen from outer space. It extends over 14 degrees of latitude, from shallow estuarine areas to deep oceanic waters, giving it a vast and complex natural ecosystem.

For a small island, there is much to do on Magnetic Island. Soar above the island in the Red Baron; the only two-passenger, open cockpit bi-plane on floats, in the world. Ride bareback into the ocean on a horse trek or discover koalas in the wild with a bush walk to historic WWII forts.

Weather Located in far north Queensland, Cairns experiences two distinct weather seasons, a wet season and a dry season. It is beautiful to visit year-round, with hot and humid summers and mild, dry winters. The wet season begins in December, usually resulting in sunshine-filled days and stormy nights. Typical daytime temperatures in Cairns are 31°C in summer and 20 °C in winter. Tropical cyclones sometimes occur from November through May.

Head North to Cape Tribulation Cape Tribulation is a remote headland and ecotourism destination. A coastal area within Daintree National Park, it offers a combination of rainforest and beaches. Boat tours are available to the Great Barrier Reef, lying to the east. Walking routes include boardwalks and a ridge trail on Mount Sorrow. Bird-watching and jungle zip-lining are popular activities. Driving yourself is the one of the best ways to leisurely explore this area. If you are really short of time, a day in the Daintree can give you a glimpse of much that is here to be explored but, to truly experience and absorb this region, it is better to stay a few days. You can hire a normal sedan car to drive to The Daintree, and as far as Cape Tribulation. This is the best transport option as the activities and scenery are spread evenly across the 80km strip of beautiful coastline from Wonga Beach, inland to Daintree Village and north across the Daintree River to Cape Tribulation. All major roads are sealed and some minor roads are unsealed but well-maintained and suitable for normal cars. You would only need a 4WD if you wanted to drive the 4WD-only Bloomfield Track beyond Cape Tribulation towards Cooktown, or the challenging CREB Track beyond Daintree Village which is for experienced 4WD drivers only. Both these Tracks may occasionally be closed following bad weather.

Kuranda Riverboat Cruise Kuranda’s iconic, must do World Heritage tropical rainforest experience has been operating since 1982. Cruise the tranquil waters of the World’s most ancient tropical rainforest on a guided riverboat tour with fascinating commentary. Scenic helicopter flights Take a look at the layout of Townsville city and suburbs while enjoying the thrill of a helicopter ride. On a thirty minute flight you can head straight out over Rowes Bay, keeping an eye out for dugongs and turtles. A left turn takes the helicopter past Palleranda and the world war two gun emplacements. The tour then follows the coast to Bushland Beach where they turn towards Mount Louisa and continue on to 1300Smile Stadium,

the home of The North Queensland Cowboys. A left turn over the stadium gives you an excellent view down into the ground. From here you pick up the Ross River and follow it down to the Ross creek and CBD for a birdâ€™s eye view of the strand and Castle Hill before landing back at the airport. Alternatively, take a Hinchinbrook Scenic Flight. This one and a half hour flight is an amazing experience! They take off from the airport and head straight out over Rowes Bay. A left turn takes the helicopter past Palleranda and the world war two gun emplacements. From here it is out over the water to the 6km long Lucinda jetty, the worldâ€™s largest sugar loading facility. On the way, fly past Rattle Snake Island and the Palm Island group. Over this stretch of water the scenic flight often encounters all sorts of sea life, including turtles, dugongs, sharks, large sea snakes, crocs and and even whales. The Lucinda jetty marks the start of the spectacular Hinchinbrook Island passage. After a fly through the passage it is up and over the Cardwell range, up the Herbert River and Stony Creek to Wallaman Falls; the highest, permanent, single drop water fall in Australia. From the falls it is off to pick up the coastline, taking you back to Townsville.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE TO STAY AT WATERS EDGE ON THE STRAND?

We are from Cairns and we have family living in Ayr so Townsville is a midway point for us, a convenient place to meet in the middle. Before booking we looked them up on Trip Advisor and noticed they had a Trip Advisor certificate of excellence so were confident we would have an enjoyable stay. We are so glad we chose Waters Edge because it is right in the heart of the Strand which is Townsville’s coastal tourist hub. The hotel is literally on the water’s edge! In the middle of the Strand, walking distance to the restaurants, cafes, bars and supermarket. The Strand is a well-designed recreational area with playgrounds for the kids, sports fields for the older kids, splash parks, swimming-pools, all linked together by a leisurely waterfront esplanade.

WHAT WAS THE ACCOMMODATION LIKE?

Our room was a sea view studio apartment and the view was just breath-taking, an uninterrupted panorama out over the stunning Coral Sea and down to the bustling street below. We had a birds-eye view of the whole parade and it made for some excellent people watching! Inside, our room was clean and comfortable. There was a soft armchair, a flat-screen T.V. and reverse- cycle air-conditioning. The apartment has a fully-equipped kitchen with two hot plates, crockery, microwave and a large fridge. The kitchen facilities were excellent and having them meant we could make breakfast

and lunch ourselves and enjoy it on our verandah. This saved us a lot of money during our stay and meant we could splash out on our evening meals.

WHAT FACILITIES ARE THERE AT WATERS EDGE ON THE STRAND?

Our favourite place to relax was poolside! Both families could gather together, cool down in the water and enjoy the ambience of our own private pool set amidst the tropical gardens. There is plenty of seating and it is elevated, looking out over the street and the ocean. We enjoyed many evenings outside on the deck, taking advantage of the communal bbq facilities and meeting other guests.

WHAT WAS SO SPECIAL ABOUT WATERS EDGE ON THE STRAND?

I loved the location best, it was so central and right on the water. The complex was also really quiet, there was a strict ‘no-party’ policy which meant we could enjoy an evening out and return to a relaxing environment and get a good night’s sleep.

WOULD YOU RECOMMEND STAYING AT WATERS EDGE TO A FRIEND?

Oh yes, in fact we will be back ourselves next year! The Manager, Sue, is really friendly and helpful. She will assist with booking tours and has a lot of local knowledge. Townsville is an awesome holiday destination well worth a visit!

Kangaroos Iconically Australian, the bouncy kangaroo is recognized worldwide as coming from a “land downunder,” Along with the emu, the kangaroo features on the Australian coat of arms. This is because it is one of the few animals in the world that has difficulty moving backward, so it was selected as a symbol of progress, always bounding forward. Townsville’s Billabong Sanctuary makes it easy for visitors to have an unforgettable kangaroo experience. The sanctuary’s kangaroos are not in enclosures, they have the freedom of 11 hectares of natural habitat to roam among. Generations of kangaroos have been born at the sanctuary, learning from a young age that visitors often have bags of food to hand-feed them with. Bags of seed to feed the kangaroos and ducks can be purchased when you arrive at Billabong Sanctuary. The kangaroos aren’t shy, they may give you a friendly nudge with their nose if they think you have seed to share, and will happily bound up to you to munch the seed from your hand. Billabong Sanctuary have two types of kangaroos roaming the habitat, the Eastern Grey, which is the common species found in Queensland, and the Red Kangaroo, which is the largest species of kangaroo. As you interact with the kangaroos at the sanctuary, you may notice something unusual hanging out of the front pouch of some of them. This is because female kangaroos carry their babies in their front pouch for up to nine months! By this stage, the babies, known as Joeys, can become quite large. Sometimes you may see a head poking out of the pouch, or sometimes it may just be a foot! DID YOU KNOW? Kangaroos can have three babies developing at one time. One can be mature and ready to leave the pouch, another tiny one can be developing in the pouch and one embryo can be in pause mode. This is because the females have the unique ability to delay birth of their baby until the previous joey has left the pouch. There are four teats in the pouch and each provides different milk for the different stages of development. Kangaroos are the largest marsupial surviving on Earth. They use their large, muscular tail for balance, often when they are “boxing” against other kangaroos, or when moving slowly they use it in place of a third leg. DID YOU KNOW? Kangaroos have excellent hearing and can swivel their large ears in all directions to pick up sounds. While you are at the sanctuary, watch how their ears move in response to unusual noise. Kangaroos in the wild are most active at night, but the kangaroos at Billabong Sanctuary are active during the day, so any time of day is a great time to visit. Billabong Sanctuary Waltzing Matilda is about as Australian as it gets and, to experience an array of wildlife by an Aussie Billabong, take a walk on the wild side at Townsville’s Billabong Sanctuary. Australia’s native animals are as weird and wonderful as they come. From the cuddly koala to the bounding kangaroo, Billabong Sanctuary lets you get up close and personal to your favourite furry, feathered and scaly friends. Billabong Sanctuary is based around three habitats; eucalypt forest, rainforest and wetlands, with a large billabong at its heart. Wetland birds come and go from the sanctuary as they please, and as you take a stroll around the lapping edge of the billabong, keep an eye out for the friendly turtles who greet you at the water’s edge. Whether you visit morning or afternoon, there are always guided shows and interactive opportunities to touch or feed many of the sanctuary’s inhabitants. If you leave Airlie Beach after breakfast and head north to Townsville, you will not miss any of the experiences as there is a 1 p.m. as well as a 3:15 p.m. crocodile feeding and also the opportunity to hold a koala both morning at 11:15 a.m. and afternoon at 4 p.m. At wildlife encounters, you can hold a koala or hug a wombat and have a souvenir photo for a small fee, or use your own camera. There is no charge for wrapping a python around your neck, holding a lizard or holding a small crocodile. At the popular feeding show, Bully will leap from the water in an amazing show of strength to take a snap at his lunch. Hear the tremendous jaws snap as Bully lunges for food, fed by one of our experienced rangers. To see him in action is an unforgettable nature experience. Take the opportunity to feed one of the snappy freshwater crocodiles, only $10 to experience the action. At the all-inclusive wildlife talks, you will learn about the ecology, the habits and unusual characteristics of Australia’s unique animals. Each ranger is passionate about the welfare of the animals at the sanctuary. Their care and devotion is evident in the presentations they give. They pass on valuable information about how to stay safe in the wild in North Queensland and also inform about many misconceptions people may have about different animals. One of the most misunderstood native animals in Australia is the dingo. See a different side to this magnificent creature and then pose for a photo and pat the friendly dingoes. Billabong Sanctuary has 2 star attractions when it comes to crocodiles. Bully who is the larger of the two weighing in at 750 kgs and measuring 4.5m in length. Bully arrived at Billabong Sanctuary in 2013 trapped at Halifax, north of Innisfail and due to his weight, his crate had to be transferred into his enclosure by crane. Then there is Jupiter, who is a whopping 500 kgs and 4.3m in length. Jupiter was caught off Townsville’s Strand beach in early February 2016. Estimated at 60 years of age, Jupiter has battle scars down the side of his body from confrontations with other large crocodiles. Make a day of it at Billabong Sanctuary by enjoying a coffee and meal from Blinky Bill Café or bring your own supplies to enjoy a barbecue beside the tropically landscaped pool.

Magnetic Island Magnetic Island is 8 km off-shore from Townsville, a quick 20 minute journey by ferry. The island is 52km2, of which 70% is national park. It is a stunning natural paradise with a relaxing tropical lifestyle. Just over 2000 people live on the island all year round and there is a friendly holiday atmosphere and chilled out local vibe.

History Magnetic Island is called Yunbenun by the Wulgurukaba people who are the Traditional Abo-riginal Owners of the island and lived there for thousands of years. In 1770 Captain James Cook sailed passed on his ship, the Endeavour’ and while he was there his compass was af-fected by ‘a strange magnetic force’ on the island which is why it is now called ‘Magnetic Is-land’.

Geography Magnetic Island was part of the Australian mainland until 7500 years ago when sea levels rose cutting it off. Magnetic Island is composed mostly of granite, the result of a volcanic force that pushed molten rock up to the earth’s surface 275 million years ago. Much of the volcanic rock has eroded away but the underlying granite has decomposed into fault lines and created the distinctive granite boulders and rocky headlands we see today. The island is famed for its untouched natural beauty, there are 23 bays and beaches, some of which are only accessible by foot or boat. Mount Cook is the highest point on the island and it is fringed by magnificently tangled rainforest jungle, vine forests, eucalypt woods and emerald green hoop pine trees.

Getting around The wonderfully winding scenic roads are great fun to drive on and the best way to explore the island. Each bend reveals a different draw-dropping bay or landscape to marvel at and it is all you can do to concentrate on the road ahead. Most places are suitable for any vehicle, but there are a couple of 4 wheel drive only tracks, one to Radical Bay which is stunning. The Tropical Topless Car Company rent our bright pink open-sided minimokes which are a fun way of exploring the island.

One hour south of Townsville and two hours north of the Whitsundays is the quiet, scenic region known as the Burdekin, home to two main centres, Ayr and Home Hill. With its vibrant community life, lush farmland, magnificent wetlands and extensive natural pursuits like fishing, birdwatching and scuba diving, this lesser known region is well-worth a visit. Visitors enjoy a taste of the vibrant rural life in North Queensland. It’s easy to meet the locals, browse the boutique shops or discover more about the local flora and fauna at the Ayr Nature Display. On a Saturday morning Ayr town centre is bustling with locals and tourists. There is a vibrant café scene serving modern breakfast options, freshly squeezed juices and beautiful coffee. The Burdekin has a rich culture and a rich history born from the booming local farming industry. Known as the ‘sugar capital of Australia” the Burdekin is the largest sugar cane producer in the country. This is prime sugar country, boasting 80,000 hectares of productive sugar cane land and producing an epic 1.25 million tonnes of raw sugar per year. The region is home to the native Gudjuda aboriginal people and is one of the only districts in Australia which still employs the traditional practice of burning the cane before harvesting. During crushing season look out for the cane trains transporting huge bundles of cane, watch for the large factories pumping pungent sugary steam into the air and witness the landscape light up as the cane fires burn. The Burdekin River Bridge is another striking landmark on the horizon, connecting the towns of Home Hill and Ayr. Known as the ‘Silver Link’, it is over 1000 metres in length, longer than the Sydney Harbour Bridge and the only bridge in Australia without a solid footing. Its huge length makes for a fun car game, try holding your breath from one end to the other as you drive over and see who the winner is! There is a display at the Burdekin Gateway Visitor Information Centre showing how the bridge was constructed. Learn the history of the region first-hand through the passion and insight of the friendly local volunteers.

An excellent photo opportunity at 10 metres tall, this mango statue is indeed the largest in the world! Bowen is famous for growing large numbers of juicy, golden mangoes. Ask at the Information Centre for the 100% Bowen mango sorbet. It is a totally healthy, utterly delicious treat!

The Bowen Foreshore The Front Beach foreshore in Bowen has recently been redeveloped with fun family activities in mind including the Bowen waterpark for younger kids. For older kids the foreshore is a great place to scramble across rockpools and along the beach. There is also some of the best fringing reefs of the Queensland coast lying just a few metres offshore, the area attracts snorkellers and divers keen to explore the colourful coral gardens.

Our room had a balcony looking out to sea, we could hear waves gently lapping the shore as we went to sleep at night and we woke up for a stunning sunrise that streamed across the bay.

WHAT MAKES CORAL COVE APARTMENTS SO SPECIAL? The luxury, comfort and elegance of our apartment is a real stand-out! We discovered that each apartment has a different design, custom-made with unique features. Our most striking feature was the sumptuous white leather lounge set just off the varandah in the open plan lounge room in front of a huge flat screen T.V. The entire apartment was open plan, light, airy and tastefully decorated in with luxurious creams with quality finishes. The kitchen flowed into the lounge which then flowed onto the huge king-size bedroom suite which had sliding doors for privacy, a walk-in wardrobe and large bathroom. When we opened the sliding doors we could see the turquoise ocean from our bed! And, in the morning, we took our breakfast on the balcony gazing out at the stunning view and enjoying the warm sea breeze. In the evening, we took a stroll and enjoyed direct access to a private beach with just the two of us watching the sunset.

WHAT SORT OF FACILITIES ARE THERE? Coral Cove Apartments is a 4.5 star complex. It effortlessly exudes class and indulgence yet still manages to retain the natural charm of a beachside holiday in North Queensland. Our friendly hosts greeted us with some fresh, locally picked mangoes and explained the easy to use and secure covered parking. They also offered us free access to their broadband system. We had access to all the mod-cons, from the surround sound flat screen T.V. with extensive Foxtel channels to the fully equipped kitchen that had enough crockery and implements to cook a five-course meal! It even had an ice machine! We had everything we needed in the apartment so it was hard to leave but when we did venture out we noticed the entire complex is beautiful. There is a swimming-pool, a hot tub and direct access to a secluded beach with great snorkeling. At night, we discovered there is an on-site restaurant, an Indian restaurant just down the road which delivers room service and a little cafĂŠ perfect for breakfast or lunch, just a few minutesâ€™ walk away.

WHY DID YOU CHOOSE THIS TOUR?

We were looking for something that would suit the kids but also give us adults a bit of fun AND a chance to relax. When we heard about the Island Jet Boating tour we were amazed how well this suited our criteria. This two and a half hour tour offers an exhilarating jet boat ride taking you to nearby tropical resort island, Daydream Island. From here, guests have a further hour and a half free time where you can choose between more watersport activities or a relaxing cocktail at the swim-up pool bar.

WHAT WAS THE TOUR LIKE?

It was brilliant! The jet boat holds groups of up to 12 people so it is a personal, small-group tour with fun and informative commentary by the friendly crew. The jet boat itself looked almost brand-new and it shot across the bay at an awesome 55kph, which the kids loved. During the ride, the boat jumps waves, spins and twists at speed while taking in the Whitsunday scenery. We arrived at Daydream Island and were very impressed! There was a living reef inhabited by large sting rays, small sharks and various other marine life that you could watch for free. We also ventured out to the lagoon-style pool and enjoyed a cocktail at the swim-up bar. After this, we still had time to hire a jet ski for half an hour.

WHAT WAS YOUR FAVOURITE PART OF THE TOUR?

Definitely the jet boat ride! Everyone loved it, from adults to kids, it is a fun adventure where everyone gets wet and screams with delight!

Saturday markets Every Saturday as the sun comes up Airlie Beach foreshore comes alive. Stall holders from around the region gather to put on a lively market show. Mango sorbet fresh from Bowen, farmers selling their delicious homegrown vegetables, stunning Australian opals, nautical giftware, homemade jewelry and fashion, this market has you browsing for hours. Buskers are playing music, there is sandcastle art and you can even get a massage at a bargain $20 for 20 minutes!

Walk along the boardwalk Whether you enjoy a soft, gentle stroll or leap out of bed in the morning for a fast jog, the Airlie Beach Bicentennial Walk-way is a simply stunning, must-do activity that everyone would enjoy. The wooden boardwalk, built in 1988, hugs the coastline and gives you uninterrupted views out to sea, almost at sea level. The 3.7km boardwalk links Airlie Beach to Abell Point Marina and then onwards to Cannonvale Beach. The scenic round trip takes roughly 2 hours.

Airlie Beach Lagoon When you want to meet someone you meet “at the Lagoon”. If you want a great day of relaxation with no admission fee, “spend a day at the Lagoon”. The large open-air lagoon-style swimming-pool is surrounded by grassy knolls, perfect for a spot of sunbathing, or finding a quiet spot in the shade to read a book. The sandy beach area at one end provides a safe stinger free environment for the children to play in the shallows and the lagoon is surrounded by landscaped gardens. A children’s pool is situated at one end.

TELL US A BIT ABOUT YOUR EXPERIENCE: The half-day guided tour took us on a 50 min drive north to Bowen. It was great to see a bit more of the countryside, learn about the area and what Bowen is famous for, such as the movie “Australia” which was filmed in the town. The jump itself was one of the best things I’ve ever done in my life! Most people were nervous beforehand but the friendly crew took their time to make sure we all felt as relaxed as possible. Free-falling through the sky was a buzz like I had never had before! The nerves flew away as the instructor and I shot passed the clouds. The wind in my cheeks and across my ears was the only sound I could hear as we reached virtual velocity, the fastest speed a human can fall. After a minute the parachute opened and we began to decelerate. This slower pace was spectacular as we could enjoy the birds eye view for miles around. We were also lucky enough to see turtles and stingrays out at sea and I was very glad I booked the beach landing package.

THE BOUTIQUE END OF TOWN WHERE IS SHINGLEY BEACH RESORT? The resort is perfectly positioned, overlooking stunning Abell Point Marina and the gateway to the Whitsunday Islands. The majority of boat tours depart from the marina and there are two excellent restaurants both offering stunning sunsets, delicious food, live music and, of course, . . . cocktails! Located at the quiet, boutique end of Airlie Beach, the resort is also an easy ten minute walk to the bustling holiday townâ€™s restaurants, bars and shops. It is easy to get there via the coast hugging bi-centennial walkway which offers picturesque scenic views along the coastline and out to sea. You can also turn left along the same boardwalk and head to the smaller, lesser known area of Cannonvale Beach. Again, this is a stunning coast-hugging boardwalk that leads you to a beautiful bay known to be a breeding ground for turtles and home to famous shipwreck, Whitsunday Magic. On Shingley Beach, directly in front of the resort, there is also stand-up paddle boards and kayaks for hire. This is a great opportunity to learn a new skill from within the calm waters of the marina walls.

They offer studios and 1, 2 and 3 bedroom apartments. All 32 apartments are spacious with open plan living areas, good size verandahs and stunning marina views. The resort has excellent facilities for mobility impaired guests, offering two poolside apartments that have wheelchair access and roll-in showers. The larger 3 bedroom apartments are split level with the top floor queen bedrooms front-facing and looking out over the marina. Studio apartments are fitted with a well-equipped kitchenette. Larger apartments are fully self-contained with a fullsized fridge, oven, stove top, a dishwasher, washing machine and dryer. All rooms have air-conditioning, fans, comfortable lounge suites, large flat-screen T.Vs and dining tables.

WHAT FACILITIES DOES THE RESORT HAVE?

There are two beautifully maintained swimming-pools on site. One is a secluded plunge pool and is located at the top of the resort, the second is a lagoon style pool. The lagoon pool is located next to the Rainbow Bakery Cafe which boasts a sensational patisserie with home-cooked cakes, pastries, pies and tea/coffee.

WHAT MAKES SHINGLEY BEACH RESORT SO SPECIAL?

Its peaceful location and pleasantly quiet ambience. It is set away from the main tourist hub, yet just a short stroll away from lively restaurants and shopping facilities. I enjoyed the bicentennial walkway. There was no need to get a taxi as the walk is so breath-taking and it quickly became part of my daily holiday routine. Shingley Beach Resort is also extremely affordable, great value for money with high standards, excellent facilities and prime location overlooking the marina. The staff at reception were also friendly and helpful, offering tour advice and renewing my wifi codes whenever required. I thoroughly enjoyed my stay at Shingley Beach Resort and would book again in a second!

My email confirmation included a welcome checklist I could fill-in to ensure the airconditioning in my room was set to my desired temperature and dinner reservations were made at the on-site restaurant ahead of my arrival. As we walked into the elegant lobby we were greeted by a gracious team of bespoke butlers, one of which escorted us personally to our room, showed us how everything operated and even offered to turn down our bed for us! We were pleased to discover, complementary canapes were also waiting for us at on-site restaurant, the Deck.

What are the rooms like? No expense had been spared in the fittings and facilities offered in our room. The king-sized bed boasted clouds of soft quality linen, a vast recessed television dominated the wall opposite the bed, a luxurious leather occasional chair with foot stool was set to the side and an ergonomic wooden fan fluttered overhead. There was also a well-stocked fridge with a separate wine cooler department and complementary tea/coffee making facilities which included a Nespresso coffee machine. Inside the bespoke bathroom there was a bathtub equipped with spa jets and a walk-in shower. Our verandah looked out towards the turquoise ocean and a gentle sea breeze cooled us as we sat and enjoyed the view. Would you recommend Heart Hotel and Gallery to a friend? Yes, with absolute confidence. My experience was perfection and I felt totally spoilt. From the personalized service of the bespoke butlers to the luxury comforts in our room everything was to the highest quality yet felt effortless and timeless in its charm.
