Ok. Let’s think about this for a minute. You suck mate, so guess what? we are going to give you a handicap, so you can feel better about how crap you really are! That’s what it sounds like to me and I am sure to every other woman who got excited about her hot dinner date, only to hear that Joe Bloggs took it out because he has a handicap! Seriously, what other sport do you know of that has this same feel good scoring system? Just imagine it. You’re about to race in a 100 metre sprint. You’ve trained hard, been working out at the gym, eating right and have an athletic ability of some kind but, because your current time puts you top of the ladder and a sure winner, you find out that Joe Blogs, who spends most of his time on the couch eating all the wrong things and who has very little athletic ability, he gets a 50 metre head start on you! Poor thing, he has a handicap…. Well, it’s probably a good thing that I don’t play golf. If I were to take out a competition and some Joe Blogs tried to take my win, there would be hell to pay. P.S. Joe Blogs, you owe me dinner!

Should I look at refinancing my home & investment loans? yes Do I have anything to lose? NO Do I have anything to gain? YES Interest rates are at an historical low with an official cash rate of 2.5% and the RBA are indicating that this may increase in the last quarter of 2014 in an effort to dampen the surge in housing prices in capital cities. Not only should you be considering refinancing your residential properties, but it is also time to consider locking-in interest rates on all or part of your portfolio. The advantages of refinancing the loan on your primary place of residence are so great that it is not uncommon that the savings will fund the cost of a new residential investment home!!

business Often, there is not a clear line to draw in the sand whereby parties are no longer “boyfriend” and “girlfriend” and have become de facto partners. The court can make an order declaring the existence of a defacto relationship if the individuals in question are not married or related to each other and, having regard to all the circumstances of their relationship, live together on a genuine domestic basis.
The transition from a boyfriend/girlfriend relationship to a de facto relationship can have significant financial consequences. Obtain advice from a specialist Family Lawyer today on how to minimise the financial impact of your relationship.
The magic number is two years, however, the court can determine that a defacto relationship exists inside that time. Further, there can be circumstances where the court will declare the existence of a defacto relationship when the couple do not actually live together in the traditional sense. When making a declaration of the existence of a defacto relationship, the Court will look at a number of factors, including: • • • • • • • • •
the duration of the relationship; the nature and extent of their common residence; whether a sexual relationship exists; the degree of financial dependence or interdependence, and any arrangements for financial support, between them; the ownership, use and acquisition of their property; the degree of mutual commitment to a shared life; whether the relationship is or was registered under a prescribed law of a State or Territory as a prescribed kind of relationship; the care and support of children; the reputation and public aspects of the relationship.

business innovation Many people think that business innovation is all about research and development. Innovation can take many forms, such as a new process, new ways of communicating with your customers or clients, an improvement to an already existing product or service or a new way of processing orders within your business. Innovation can even include marketing in a different way or collaborating with another company to introduce new skills or products that enhance your skills or products. Not every business has to be like Google, recently named the most innovative company for 2014, that has so many innovative products on the go there are too many to cover, such as autonomous vehicles that don’t need a driver, or “Glass” that are glasses that you wear that enable you to answer your front door without leaving your chair. We have many innovative clients such as one client that is introducing a new lighting system that will half your electricity bill if you have a large shed or warehouse with many lights. Another who has fine-tuned his metal fabrication business so well that if its metal, he can make it.
GILLIAN SANDHOFF PRINCIPAL SYNERGY PROFESSIONAL ACCOUNTING SOLUTIONS
Outsourcing can be a way of innovating by outsourcing the things that you don’t have the skills to do that either combines with the skills you do have to enable a new service offering or by freeing you up to concentrate on the things you are good at. Any innovation you undertake should be aligned with your overall business strategy by developing performance metrics and targets into the normal pattern of business. There is no point in innovation just for the sake of innovation. Our firm is an innovative business, although you may think how can an accounting practice be innovative? We are very proactive and always look for new ways to service our clients to help them grow and make more money. We try to improve our processes to be more efficient as well as taking care of the small things, such as reserving a parking spot and having a drinks menu.
Research has shown that innovative businesses are 43% more likely to report customer satisfaction and 42% more likely to report profit increases.
Commercialisation Australia provides assistance for companies and businesses to take a new product, process or service to market by providing grants, networking opportunities, business mentors and case managers with skills to help their business.
You can become an innovative business by promoting a culture of innovation in your workplace and encouraging your employees to support and embrace ways of improving things.

are you social for business? Business hours are no longer store opening hours. Now you can present your goods and wares at all hours for your customers, and potential customers, to view in the comfort of their home, whilst in their pyjamas! Social media, love it or hate it, is here and in force. You can choose to ignore it or embrace it. By embracing it, you are giving your business an opportunity to reach out, understand, and learn about the market you are targeting. Where do your clients hang out online? What are their interests and hobbies? Not sure? Ask them! Find out, have a look around, see what they ‘like’ and who they ‘follow’. Then, consider any identifiable trends when planning your social media marketing strategy. This may present you with a new way of getting your business in front of your clients in different arenas. Where they are not expecting to see you, resulting in a greater impact. Have you got a Facebook page for your business? Have you noticed your posts are not being seen by as many users of late? Facebook has recently changed its algorithm, keeping businesses and marketers from flooding their users with paid advertisements as we start to recognise this as a great and traceable way to reach our market. If you are willing to pay for this, you can be very specific as to who you are targeting, by location, age, sex, marital status, interests, life events and much more, achieving both great reach and results. If you would like more information on how to best use Facebook for business or any of the other social media platforms, contact Tolita at 8 Seconds on 0488 117 728 or tolita@8seconds.com. au, or check out www.8seconds.com.au. www.corelife.com.au 19

There’s more to choosing a home loan than working out the repayments. We can help you find a loan that suits your situation We will sit down with you and compare and contrast all available lenders to find out who will suit you best and how much you could borrow. It’s hard to know how much you can borrow because even though your circumstances remain the same, one lender might lend you substantially more than another.

Also when you’re taking out a home loan, you need to be sure you can afford the repayments. They vary depending on the loan amount, interest rates and other factors like the loan term and type. Importantly interest rates are at historical lows so allowing for repayments at a higher interest rate when choosing the particular size loan you require would be prudent in this cycle.
And don`t forget the “Great Start Grant” !
The Great Start Grant is designed to assist first home buyers when buying or building a new home. First home buyers who meet eligibility criteria may qualify to receive a one off $15,000 when purchasing or building a brand new home up to a maximum purchase price of $750,000. Why Choose Mortgage Choice, Victoria St ? - For more choice: We compare up to 27 lenders to find you the right loan. - To get a great deal: We compare product features, benefits and competitive rates. - Less stress: We take care of the paperwork, lodge the application and do all the follow up.

are you selling in a buyer’s market & have little motivation? Maybe you don’t have to sell! Dee Mangion
When the market is slow and there is a surplus of properties on the market, demand falls and can make it more difficult to achieve the asking price. It also gives buyers a greater choice eliminating any urgency to purchase, giving them confidence to take their time before making a final decision. It makes no sense to have an overpriced home on the market. In the beginning when the property is about to be listed many sellers will tell their agent “it’s okay I’m not in a hurry to sell!” It’s in the first few weeks the property goes on the market that it will attract the most interest. If the property is overpriced it will NOT attract much interest if any at all. Any marketing money invested promoting the property is often spent in the first 4 – 6 weeks, so it makes no sense to reduce the price weeks later due to lack of interest. If you’re price is too high, you’ll need to continually reduce the price until you hit that “magic” number, and by then buyers will begin wondering: What is wrong with your house? How much lower will you go? Ideally, if necessary you want only one price reduction. If you’re not motivated to sell, you might be better
off renting your house or staying put until the market improves. There is so much information available to buyers now. The days are gone when a seller could test the market, nowadays it makes no sense. “If a seller does not conform to the marketplace, that person is not a seller. That person is just somebody with a sign in the yard.” Arrange meeting with a few real estate agents. Each agent will bring you a current market report. These reports will reveal the current value of your property. Assess the information realistically, accept the facts, and avoid choosing an agent who may give you the highest sale price when the sales report doesn’t support it! Even in distressed markets, where home prices slide into downward spirals, properties that are priced below what buyers are readily willing and without prodding to pay are likely to receive multiple offers. Every House Will Sell if the Price is Right! If you would like to know the current market value of your property, feel free to give me a call for your FREE report.

personalities “It might be breaking our hearts at the moment, but it will not break our will.” Those words spoken by former Queensland Premier, Anna Bligh, will forever resonate in the minds of those effected by the devastating Lockyer Valley floods of 2011, none more so than those who experienced it first-hand. Brett Robinson grew up in the northern suburbs of Perth in Western Australia, but moved to Brisbane 13 years ago to enjoy the tropical Queensland lifestyle. He moved to Mackay in 2003, but had to return to Brisbane in 2007 due to family and work commitments. In 2011 he witnessed a life-changing event, which resulted in tremendous loss of property and life, when he saw the inland tsunami roar through the Lockyer Valley. It taught him to appreciate love and life, and make the most of every day. He eagerly grabbed the opportunity to return to Mackay, and has joined the River City Motor Group team as the Sales Manager for Fiat Chrysler. With this position he leads an enthusiastic and experienced sales team under the Fiat, Alfa Romeo, Chrysler, Jeep and Dodge brands. These brands are synonymous with quality, prestige and excellence, and range from fuel-efficient city cars to powerful 4WD’s. Brett has 34 years of experience within the automotive industry, the latter being in senior management. With a strong ambition to succeed in all facets of the automotive industry, his dedication to his team and clients ensures a high level of service and knowledge. His passion for automobiles extends outside of working hours. Brett is a motorsport enthusiast, particularly V8’s. In his teenage years it was un-motorised wheels that were the focus of his attention, as a roller speed skater. He can still skate now but prefers the comfort of being behind the wheel rather than strapping them onto his feet.

It is this philosophy that clients love when they entrust Steve Marks from Ray White Whitsunday to sell their home. They know that he treats every listing as though it was his own. “The hardest part about selling a home is ensuring that you receive a premium price, being the best price that a buyer will pay. Selling my own home taught me how personal this transaction is and, while agents transact properties every day, for a client it could be a once or twice in a lifetime experience,” Steve said. His personable approach is just one of the reasons that Steve was a finalist for 2014 Real Estate Institute of Queensland Awards for excellence as salesperson of the year. His resulting ranking of 47 in more than 2,500 Ray White agents in Queensland is a reflection of his dedication to clients. Originally from Brisbane, Steve got his first glimpse of the Whitsundays in 1994 after a bareboating vacation. He fell in love with the area and travelled Australia to see more. He took the long way around the country and ended up at Kunnnunurra in Western Australia, where he lived for a year. Giving anything a go, Steve accepted a bet at a rodeo from a big ringer named Bluey, who had given him stick about being a city boy. Steve was
expecting to ride a poddy bull but ended up in the jackpot ride. He lasted eight seconds before being thrown off. Bluey later claimed it was only because Steve was so scrawny that the bull hadn’t noticed him on his back. After arriving in the Whitsundays, Steve worked in hospitality at Club Crocodile, Hamilton Island and was the General Manager of Beaches in Airlie Beach. After the birth of his first child, Steve was looking to get out of the hospitality trade and met Mark Beale for a coffee, who had recently purchased the Ray White franchise for the Whitsundays.

“At the forefront of my mind, I remind myself that while we may have ten or more listings at any one time, our client has just the one. That one should be just as important to me as it is to them.”
Eight years later, Steve and his wife have two boys, Jakob and Alex, who take great interest in dad’s work. “Each time we drive past Regatta Waters, my youngest will say “Look there’s daddy’s golf course”. In fact we have secured a lot in stage two ourselves and will make it our future home,” Steve said. Making the most of the beauty of the islands, Steve sails every Wednesday in the sailing club’s twilight races and completed his first full Airlie Beach race week last year. Crossing the finishing line in a yacht or slapping a ‘Sold’ sticker on a real estate listing, both are euphoric for Steve, who strives for smooth sailing on both land and water.

Sarah-Jane
iconic bride photgraphy
Sarah-Jane lives with passion. Whether she is jumping out of a plane, or shooting an eloping couple exchanging wedding vows on film, her enthusiasm for life shines through. Sarah-Jane grew up in Gorleston, located in Norfolk, England. ‘I loved that part of the world, and I still miss my family every day, but I was excited to travel’. In 2006, she booked a one-way ticket to New Zealand. On arrival, Sarah-Jane literally spread her wings, signing up for a Diploma in Commercial Skydiving. ‘That experience reshaped my whole outlook. It helped me identify who I was and what I am capable of, it was life changing’. Not only did skydiving teach Sarah-Jane to look at life from a different perspective, it also sparked her interest in photography. ‘We had to learn about professional DSLR cameras, and then had to master having one of these strapped to your head whilst jumping out of plane! A cable that you held in your mouth was activated by biting down to take a picture, talk about multitasking!’ she laughs. It was these thrilling moments that Sarah-Jane was photographing that inspired her passion to document these life events through a lens. With partner Eric, Sarah-Jane moved to Australia in 2013, upon being granted a visa based on Eric’s photography skills, a shared interest between the two. It was in Airlie Beach that she began to focus on photography. ‘After jumping 300 times I came to realise that whilst I loved sky-diving, I couldn’t pursue any other interests, it was taking over! So I hung up my wings and decided to give photography my full attention.’ Sarah-Jane had completed her Diploma in Photography during her time in New Zealand, so was ready to work in the industry in the Whitsundays. ‘I started researching local businesses online, and when I came across Iconic Bride, I was blown away! I immediately wanted to be a part of that team, so I made contact with Norina Jane. I am now seven months in and I am so passionate about my role and working in such a visual area, it is just stunning. With one of my major focuses being elopements, I get to witness not only the most important day in a couple’s relationships as they share their vows for life, but create a memory with my camera for them as well.’

the Reel life Ashley matthews
When a day at work feels like a dream come true, you know you have turned a passion into a calling. Ashley Matthews felt like he was dreaming when the manager of Daydream Island hired him on behalf of the island’s owner, Mr Vaughan Bullivant, to skipper his private 68ft luxury motor yacht. Part of this position was also to operate fishing charters on Daydream Island’s 30ft charter boat. When Daydream Island sold its fishing vessel, Ashley was keen to start his own fishing charter business and, with encouragement from Vaughan, Ashley became the owner of Reel Work, the star vessel for Sea Fever Sportfishing Whitsundays. In the mid 90’s he worked as a decky in Cairns for Kim Anderson, a reputable charter boat captain. “Kim, I believe, is half fish and if he couldn’t find the fish, then no one could,” Ashley said. Ashley then moved to Western Australia and worked as a deckhand on commercial crayfish and tuna vessels. “They say you can’t buy experience and, in this case, it was true. I spent more nights at sea than I did on the mainland during those five years. What I learned about the ocean during my time in Western Australia made me the skipper I am today,” Ashley said. Ashley moved from WA to Airlie Beach in 2001 and now the Great Barrier Reef is his home.
supporting Ashley and the business, is his wife Kathryn. While Ashley may be the man on the boat, his wife Kathryn is the first point of contact for the business. The couple spend their days with their two young sons, Reece, who is six, and Shannon, who is three. “Getting the boys into fishing is of course a big dream for me but I don’t want to shove it down their throats. Although they are already showing signs of developing the passion so that makes me smile,” Ashley said. For a land-based holiday, the family like to head back to Victoria to spend time with their extended family. Big footy fans, they always try to catch a Bombers game or two at the MCG. Back on the water, Ashley tries to make every excursion memorable for his clients. “Hearing someone say that it was the best day they ever spent with their dad is the most rewarding part of what I do,” Ashley said. As a huge cricket fan, Ashley cherished taking former Australian captain, Mark Taylor, out on the water. “We had one of those perfect days where he caught a selection of reef fish, as well as a trophy Red Emperor, then his first ever Giant Trevally. Quite an epic day,” Ashley said. Hook, line and sinker, any day on the Great Barrier Reef beats a day in the office.

Anyone can fill a rented space with exercise equipment. What makes Airlie Fitness stand above the rest is the connection they have with their members. Owner and trainer, Corey Whibley, is passionate about people.
strength&balance Corey Whibley, Airlie Fitness
He and his wife, Wendy, moved to Cannonvale in 2007 to be closer to Wendy’s parents, local sugar cane farmers. The couple met at The Australian Institute of Fitness in Brisbane, a change of direction for them both, as Wendy was a registered nurse and Corey had studied mathematics at university in Adelaide. They started the region’s first personal training studio in a small shop under a home, across the road from where they lived. They used a combination of the studio as well as the beautiful surrounds to train clients. As the business grew, they moved into a larger space next door, and used their knowledge of nutrition to sell supplements and health foods to complement the training. In 2009 they saw an opportunity to move into a space that a previous gym occupied and grew to a fitness centre of 200 clients, from what was originally a small personal training studio. Despite the financial depression at the time, the couple then took a leap out of their comfort zone to move the business to the popular Reef Plaza to become the club it is today. To ensure they continue to offer the best and most up-to-date training techniques, Corey and Wendy are both completing their Diploma of Fitness this year. When they first moved to Cannonvale, Corey and Wendy brought their first-born daughter, Olivia, with them. Now the couple have three girls who keep them run off their feet. Corey’s favourite hobby is spending time with his girls and taking them for adventures in the caravan. It’s hard to imagine this staunch family man as a club DJ but, while living in Adelaide in the 90’s, Corey used to play to thousands of people in the club scene. As a personal trainer and consultant to other fitness professionals, Corey likes to lead by example and inspire his members to lead a healthy lifestyle. He is currently training to compete in a Natural Body-building competition next year in the masters division, proving that even the experts need to take time each day to look after their health. It may not be an easy journey but, with expert advice and encouragement from Airlie Fitness, it will be worth it.

denman Cellars Beer Cafe Over an evening of drinking beer and eating Kransky’s in Canberra, two brothers marveled at the concept of eating small, delicious portions of food with good beer. An epiphany emerged for a successful business idea, proving that beer can indeed lead to brilliance. Ben Hayman and his brother Daniel were born in New Zealand, but moved with their parents to Australia when they were young. They spent time in Sydney and Wollongong before moving to Canberra, where Ben lived for almost 20 years. He spent his life immersed in the liquor industry, managing a liquor store for Woolworths when he was 18, before becoming a rep for Hardy’s Wines. With a Kiwi heritage and Australian upbringing, it was no surprise that Ben and his brother were fond of beer and together they opened their first business, a bottle store in Canberra. The brothers came up with the idea of opening a beer-specific café, serving a range of tapas and meals that would complement beer and cider, with a range of local and imported beer which celebrated the best in amber fluid. The brothers decided that the Whitsundays would be the perfect location for their business venture. Ben was keen to move his family to a beautiful part of Australia, where his wife and their two children could live in a warm, tropical climate. He had honeymooned in the Maldives and loved it. Airlie Beach, in the gorgeous Whitsundays is about as close to that paradise as you can find in Australia.
Photography by: Whitsunday photographer
Denman Cellar Beer Café emerged, overlooking the tranquility at the Port of Airlie, a family-owned business specialising in boutique beer, tasty cider and mouth-watering morsels of food. Ben’s mum and his sister Sarah also moved to Airlie. So Sarah is also part of the Denman Cellar team. With the precious time Ben has off from running the Beer Café, the families try to spend Sunday evenings together for a family dinner. Although Daniel is still in Canberra, he plays as much part in running the business as Ben, with some of the menu items being his inspiration. When he gets time off from the business, Ben hopes to bring his beloved car from Canberra to Airlie, a 1970 RX2 Rotary Capella which he built himself. With the sun on your face and a cold beer in your hand, this slice of paradise is about as close to perfection as it gets.

Luckily I rarely get time alone or I’d be as big as a house.
Chocolate, not one in particular but all of them...
One big greasy mess.
With 3 kids, when I do get the rare occasion and find myself home alone to indulge my guilty pleasure, I love crunchy peanut paste with celery. I use the celery as a spoon and double dip right out of the tub. I think I use the celery to convince myself it’s healthy. Most times I just use a spoon.
Being from Ireland, when I get home after a good day at work, I like to make my version of a classic from the chippies back in Ireland. Homemade chips (hot chips to you Aussies!), covered in chilli con carne, a layer of cheese and topped off with lots of taco sauce!
My other really sickeningly sweet indulgence is to suck sweetened condensed milk straight out of the tube. Luckily, I rarely get time alone or I’d be as big as a house.

Hope my kids are not reading this! My guilty indulgence would have to be chocolate. Not one in particular but all of them, be it white, milk or dark. I have empty yoghurt boxes in the fridge and that is where I like to hide my secret stash. Luckily, no one in my house likes to eat light yoghurt. When the kids are in bed and it’s mummy time, I like to make myself a cup of coffee and grab a spoon and sit and eat out of the Nutella jar (when no one is watching)…. Julie, sorrento, airlie beach

Food for Thought we are what we eat. As a child, this simple philosophy confused me. How was I similar to Weetbix or a Vegemite sandwich? If I ate an orange, would that make me round and dimpled? I had decided that if I was going to be anything, I’d much rather be a cupcake. At least they were delicious, pretty and made everyone smile. Clearly, I hadn’t quite grasped the concept. An orange, full of vitamin C, fibre and natural sugar, would leave me feeling energised and refreshed, while giving my body precious nutrition to function optimally and keep away disease. I am an orange, so I am energetic and healthy. A cupcake on the other hand, made from sugar, white flour and saturated fat, would give me a burst of sweet energy, but would then rapidly fluctuate my insulin levels, causing me to feel tired, sluggish and irritable. I would be in no mood for physical activity, so the excess fat my body hasn’t used, will be stored in my body, causing potential health problems. I am a cupcake, so I am sluggish, my mood changes rapidly, I’ve put on weight and I feel unhealthy. As an adult, I no longer want to be the cupcake. I want to be healthy. But where do I begin? I have learned that healthy eating is less about weight loss and more about feeling fantastic.
feature Start slow
An overnight overhaul can often lead to unrealistic expectations and set you up for instant failure. The key is to make one change at a time, and become good at it. Remove a potato from your evening meal and replace it with a healthy grain, such as quinoa. Better yet, replace a carbohydrate with a green vegetable, such as kale, spinach or green beans. Make a new change each week and become dedicated to that one change.
Small steps
Professional athletes will improve their performance by accumulating marginal gains, the tiniest of changes, that grow together to make a real difference. The same can be said for a healthy lifestyle. Say no to an afternoon slice of cake. Have a trim latte instead of a mocha. Replace butter with cottage cheese. Every little improvement you make over time is of benefit to your overall health.
Water
Water is crucial to health and wellbeing and, while we often think we drink enough, we probably don’t. When we don’t drink enough water, we feel tired, we get headaches, and
we mistake our thirst for hunger. Therefore reaching for a sweet or salty snack. Water is just as important to a healthy diet as any other component.
Food is not merely for feeding the body, it also feeds the soul.
Go natural
We are lucky that we live in a tropical gourmet paradise, which is reflected in the quality served in our local restaurants.
Our bodies crave the goodness we get from nature. The kind of goodness that heavily processed foods lose. Sugar, fat, salt, carbohydrate, protein. These are all important components of a balanced diet, but are best when they come in their purest form. Good sources of healthy fat are needed to nourish your brain, heart, and cells, as well as your hair, skin, and nails.
Moderation
At Core Life, we are delighted to serve the best of our district on a plate, for you to feast your senses upon. It’s food for thought, but be careful not to salivate, as we satiate your mind with ideas and inspiration to liven your palate.
Bon appétit!
Healthy eating isn’t about grouping certain foods as off-limits. We often take an all or nothing approach to nutrition, which ultimately leads to failure. Food is nourishment, so the choices we make will directly impact how our body feels. Don’t treat food like the enemy, rather the key component to staying happy and healthy. Reconnect with the joy of eating, savouring each mouthful for the delightful bursts of flavour and texture that comes from a nutritionally delicious meal.

Healthy Lunch Boxes your kids will love.
It’s no secret that children can be fussy eaters, especially when it comes to healthy food. A full lunch box returning home from school is a deflating experience. Mums find themselves asking, “Were they so busy they forgot to eat? Did they fill up on junk food given to them by friends? Or did they just not like the food that was packed for them?” Children at school have important nutritional needs to support their growth and development. A balanced supply of protein, carbohydrates, vitamins and minerals is essential to both physical and mental growth. Providing this nutrition in a lunch box can be challenging, especially during the morning rush. It needs to be easy to prepare, easy to eat, and yummy. As a busy mum, you will already appreciate how preparation and planning can make all the difference. Fresh is best and, with a little spark of creativity, you will be surprised at how much money you can save when you ditch the processed convenience snacks for raw and ready munchables.
Be creative
A banana is just a banana. Right? Wrong! A felt tip pen can turn that boring piece of fruit into one of your children’s favourite movie characters! Write a joke on the banana or a special message to brighten their day. They will be excited to see what their banana turns into each day!
Presentation
If they still aren’t keen on the banana by itself, try sticking together banana slices with natural peanut butter. To hold it together, dip the banana and peanut butter into melted chocolate and cool in the fridge. A nutritious, energy-filled treat. Experiment with other fillings if peanuts aren’t allowed at your child’s school.
Frozen to fresh
In our hot climate, lunches can warm in a school bag rapidly. If the filling permits, make your children’s sandwiches the night before and freeze. The sandwich will stay cool and fresh as it defrosts before lunch time. Frozen peas make a delicious snack and can help keep other lunch box items cool. A frozen drink bottle will also be nicer to drink, and can keep lunch items cooler.
Children will eat almost anything that comes in a cupcake wrapper. From vegetable and egg quiche to corn fritters, the morsel will look all the more appealing if presented as a treat. Imagine a meatball on the bottom, with mashed potato swirled on top to look like icing, with peas pushed into the potato for decoration.
Easy to eat
The more convenient it is to eat, the more likely a child will eat it. Chop fruit and veg into bite-size pieces. They are more likely to eat a selection of colourful squares than dig into a whole carrot or apple. Ham, cheese and pineapple on toothpicks combines fruit, protein and calcium into an easy to eat mouthful.
Denman Cellars Beer Cafe & Bottle Shop
Sandwiches become adventurous when cut into fun shapes using a cookie cutter. Try using a high-fibre white bread on the outside, and wholemeal bread on the inside, like a clubsandwich, with vegemite in one layer and cheese and lettuce in the other. Cut into a heart or a star, the sandwich will look incredibly appealing, and taste delicious! Don’t be scared to experiment and introduce exciting foods into your children’s lunch box. As long as it is fresh, filling and fun, you’ll be surprised at what will become a favourite.

Wine and cheese are two of life’s great culinary pleasures and, when paired correctly, the delicious endeavour can satiate the soul. The sommeliers at Just Wine and Cheese are experts at exotic flavour matches and are passionate to share their knowledge with patrons. Quality and sophistication reign supreme. This is a place to feel special, a place to be treated and a place to dress up. Similar to an Italian wine enoteca, it is a place to meet friends and enjoy the finer pleasures in life. No thongs allowed! Break away from the comfort zone of a well-known Marlborough Sauvignon and try one of the finest drops to be found in Australia. With more than 120 specialty wines available, you are spoilt for selection. Explore some of the more exotic range, including a Grüner Veltliner or Albariño. Suddenly a Pinot Gris seems so vanilla. For a special occasion that calls for fine champagne, enquire on the 2004 Pol Roger Brut Rosé or perhaps a glass Bollinger Brut Cuvée. There’s even a bottle of La Cote Aux Enfants, the purest expression of Pinot Noir by
Bollinger. Pinot Noir so boutique, only one bottle was ordered. A feature cheese gracing the menu at Just Wine and Cheese is Holy Goat’s La Luna, a mature taste with an amazing depth of flavour. Organic and hand-made, this cheese is widely recognised as one of Australia’s best, and is available in only three establishments across Queensland. Matches perfectly with a bottle of Sancerre. Elegance and knowing you are sampling the best is part of the allure, with a surprisingly large range of wines available to try by the glass. The perfect end to a day of sailing on the water of the Whitsundays, conveniently placed overlooking the beauty of the Port of Airlie. Just Wine and Cheese – Just because you deserve the finest.

Chocolate. The very thought of the best chocolate direct from the Swiss is enough to send delight coursing through the body, a twinkle of anticipation in the eye and a rumble of impatience in the tummy. A chocolate indulgence is the epitome of luxury, a treat to be savoured, a sensual gift. But not all chocolate is created equal.
tempting drinks menu that includes milkshakes and iced chocolate to fresh fruit smoothies.
Savour the rich and gratifying taste of chocolate as it should be at Airlie’s latest sweet sensation, The Chocolate Café.
The Chocolate Cafes signature dish is the chocolate fondue - a pot of warm melted chocolate sitting atop a fondue flame and served with strawberries, marshmallows, banana and banana bread for dipping.
Using only the finest of ingredients, The Chocolate Café has already set hearts a flutter with whispers of coverture chocolate direct from Switzerland, enchanting espresso and decadent delicacies. Their dark chocolate is up to 60% pure cocoa. It’s top quality stuff! However, it’s not only the chocolate that is creating a buzz about Airlie’s Lagoon Plaza. The Elixir coffee has already been reported as outstanding and, with an extensive lunch menu, the savoury delights are proving as popular as the sweet. The eggs benedict is rumoured to be amongst the best in town, thanks to Mandy’s secret recipe. Try yours with fresh ham off the bone or salmon.
You will be welcomed into a warm atmosphere by friendly faces you know and love. The team at The Chocolate Café are long-term Airlie residents and mums, passionate about providing an at-home experience and a relaxed environment. Grab a refreshing smoothie, milk shake, gelato or sorbet from the Chocolate Café’s sister business next door, ‘The Gelato Bar’, to take to the lagoon or enjoy the air-conditioned comfort of the ‘Chocolate café’ and its safe courtyard where children are welcome to enjoy the fun.
The gourmet and hand-made filos are outstanding, and are proving to be a favourite. Amongst others, the creamy chicken tenderloin, lovingly marinated in white wine, enfolded in a creamy Camembert sauce with freshly chopped shallots and cracked pepper is proving very popular. Divine.
Because dessert should sometimes be the main deal, you’ll be spoilt for choice when it comes to tempting your sweet tooth. Belgian chocolate waffles cooked to order, fringed by ice cream and strawberries, drizzled in coverture chocolate, is the perfect blend of naughty and nice to curb your craving. Or simply indulge in some individual chocolates to take home for a special evening in or perhaps as a gift for a good friend or loved one.
Fresh wraps, sandwiches, savoury tarts and mouth-watering quiches are among the other traditional lunch time fare on offer, complemented by a

Sweet desire...
You crave it. You may even be thinking about it right now. The sweetness between your lips. The smoothness against your tongue. The way you roll it around your mouth. It melts under your lightest touch. The pleasure is intense. It’s chocolate and with the ability to evoke pleasure-seeking emotion, it’s little wonder it’s one of the world’s finest aphrodisiacs. The simple consumption of a few cheeky pieces can produce natural opiates into the brain, creating a feel-good sensation to leave us wanting more. However, because of its commercialisation and exploitation, chocolate gets a bit of a raw deal. Many people believe it is bad for you because of the high fat and sugar content found in most supermarket brands. Unfortunately, this is true, however before you sink into an anti-chocolate depression, there is a way to appreciate chocolate’s aphrodisiac allure without entering a diabetic coma. To see the light, you need to think dark. In fact, the darker the better.
Dark chocolate has been scientifically proven to contain disease-fighting anti-oxidants, similar to those found in red wine and fruits such as blueberries. However, the level found in chocolate is much greater than in any other food. These anti-oxidants have been shown to improve blood pressure, reduce the risk of heart attacks and lower insulin resistance. The darker the chocolate, the higher the anti-oxidant levels. As cocoa beans are a vegetable, the higher the cocoa content, the closer the
White chocolate isn’t actually chocolate. Chocolate is defined by a percentage of cocoa so, because white chocolate contains zero cocoa, technically it isn’t chocolate.
M&M’s are a war-time invention.
The delicious hard-shelled candies that melt in your mouth but not in your hand were invented for soldiers at war in 1941. Standard chocolate melted too easily, but the crispy candy coating of M&M’s allowed soldiers to enjoy the treat as they fought for their country.
The aroma is part of the attraction.
Darkness is a direct reference to the cocoa content of chocolate and, simply put, the more cocoa, the less room there is for sugar and fat.
Chocolate can be healthy and nutritious.
chocolate becomes to being more of a vegetable than confectionary.
It has been discovered that the smell of chocolate increases our theta brain waves, which triggers relaxation. So the next time you pour yourself a hot bubble bath and light some candles, take some chocolate aromatherapy with you to heighten the experience.
Add punch to your caffeine hit
Melting a couple of squares of dark chocolate into your hot coffee is a great way to boost your caffeine hit, with indulgence and anti-oxidants. Dark chocolate already contains caffeine, so it’s guaranteed to super charge your afternoon pick-me-up. Drizzled, dribbled or dunkable, it’s a decadent delicacy worthy of desire.

why is everyone
juicing?
It’s no secret that fresh fruit and vegetables hold amazing power to boost our health and vitality but getting the optimum amount of both can be a daily struggle. In the quest for vibrancy and eternal youth the health world has gone bananas for juicing, creating vibrant concoctions of squeezed fruit and vegetables which have been touted as magical elixirs for maximum health. This isn’t your traditional freshly squeezed orange juice or granny’s lemonade, these juices are a next generation phenomenon that have triumphantly made their way into our cafés and kitchens.
But is it just hype or is the health hypothesis worthy of its reputation? Juicing is the art of extracting the juice from a range of fresh fruit and vegetables. What makes this different from the standard juice you buy in the supermarket is that freshly squeezed juice hasn’t been heat-treated or filled with preservatives to extend the shelf life. The cold-pressed method of juice extraction preserves more of the enzymes and nutrients found in fresh fruit and vegetables, meaning it contains more goodness. As to whether juicing is better than eating fresh fruit and vegetables, the jury is still out on that one. One school of thought claims that juicing is better for you because your body absorbs the nutrients more readily and gives your digestive system a rest from breaking down the fibre. As a result of poor food choices, many of us suffer from a sluggish digestive system which struggles to break down food effectively, meaning we end up flushing the majority of goodness down the toilet. It is widely agreed upon juicing can be an excellent way to complement a healthy lifestyle, by providing an easy way to consume an increased amount of fruit and vegetables. This makes it easier to achieve six or more serves per day. Expert juicers recommend starting with pleasant tasting fruits and mellow-tasting vegetables, such as pineapple and cucumber, then working your way up more bitter tasting vegetables, such as wheatgrass and kale. Fruit and vegetables contain fibre which is important for bodily function, so juicing shouldn’t completely replace a nutritionally balanced diet. Think of it as a boost to your health rather than a complete meal. If you are conscious about weight loss limit the number of fruits you add to your juicing as this will add natural sugars to your daily calorie intake.
How to get started
Healthy heart
It’s important not to grab the cheapest juicer on the market. They can be inefficient and you won’t get your money’s worth in regards to juice produced or the quality of nutrients extracted. A coldpressed option will produce the best quality juice.
This is an easy juicing recipe that beginner juicers will love as it’s higher in fruits than vegetables. This juice is energizing and great for cleansing your blood.
Start with fruit and vegetables that you already enjoy the taste of and concentrate on ones with a high water content, such as pineapple, watermelon or oranges. Bananas won’t juice effectively and berries offer little juice for what you pay for them. Save these ingredients for your smoothies instead.
1 2 1 1 1 4
Consume your juice immediately, don’t store it in the fridge. Freshly squeezed juice does not contain preservatives so will not last as long as supermarket juice. Clean your juicer after every use.

Become t he Woman You want t o be
what’s affecting your mood?
To make yourself feel a little better and to get that all important energy hit you choose a chocolate, a pastry, cake or biscuits or, if trying to wind down, you may choose a wine or beer and some biscuits and cheese. You have it, you initially feel great but about 1/2 an hour later you start to feel tired, lethargic, head aching. You might even start to hear negative self talk, energy and positiveness going out the window.
How food affects our mood and the role of fermented food in this.
Until of course you go back to the lolly jar to start the cycle all over again…. Until one day you look in the mirror or on the scales and you realize that you have to get off this mood enhancing food, similar to drugs, you have to bring your body back to the centre… you have to find balance.
How many of you out there know the feeling of looking for a feel good food? It has been a long day or you have a long afternoon with the boss to get through or you are once again on night shift and still have 10 hours to go?
Food is often used as a reward or to self-medicate. When we eat modern, processed foods, we are momentarily rewarded with a feeling of calmness or satiety. However, these same foods can cause a spike in blood sugar to put stress on the endocrine system. These two factors contribute to a number of modern diseases. Good bacteria in the gut can influence your behavior and even affect your mood! Bacteria create neurochemicals that inhibit or promote inflammation, and gut bacteria also contribute to the endocrine system. Neurochemicals play a role in your brain activity to influence how you think and feel. To put it all in perspective, 90% of a neurochemical like serotonin that regulates mood is produced in the gastrointestinal tract. Supporting your gut with beneficial bacteria can increase GABA neurotransmitters in the brain to balance your mood and even reduce chronic depression. Even better, good gut bacteria will protect your health over the long term to reduce the risk of heart disease, dementia, and type II diabetes. So before you enter the cycle once again, ask yourself do you want jelly beans or a long and healthy life Eating that donut may make you feel better for a moment or two, but over the long term, it will exhaust your endocrine system and increase the risk of anxiety, insomnia, and depression.

Get out and
play
Surrounded by white sandy beaches, lush rainforest and a rugged hinterland, the Mackay and Whitsundays area is paradise on a plate for lovers of the great outdoors. Where else in the world can you bathe in the cooling pool of a cascading waterfall, walk amongst butterflies under the canopy of a rainforest, snorkel amongst colourful reef fish and then set up a campfire on a shore of a tropical island, all in the same day? There’s nothing more Australian than getting amongst the glory of nature, and it’s on our doorstep waiting to be explored.
Good walking shoes, insect repellant and drinking water are all essential items to pack.
Grab a water bottle, lace up your walking shoes and simply walk out the front door to make a lifetime of memories. Here are some of our top destinations for enjoying our beautiful outdoors.
Crayfish Beach, Hook Island
Clermont
Bring back the great Queensland road trip and head inland on the Peak Downs Highway to discover the rustic charm of Clermont. Hoods Lagoon is a magical area for a picnic. A quaint stream flows over colourful rocks before entering the tranquil lagoon, abundant in bird life. Take a stroll over the lagoon bridge, a popular location for photography, before meandering around the lagoon itself, with various memorials scattered along the walk to serve as a reminder of Clermont’s heritage. At the southern entrance stands a flood memorial, showing the height of the devastating 1916 flood in which 65 people perished. Keep an eye out in the tree tops for a cheeky koala or two. The lagoon has excellent facilities, with picnic tables, a barbeque and public toilets, or take a rug and find a secluded spot for blissful romance.
Sarina Beach
Just a few minutes from Sarina, you’ll find a stretch of un-spoilt golden beach, with beautiful views of the Coral Sea. Sarina Beach offers every facility for the perfect family picnic, with a playground, water fountains, shade, a barbeque, picnic tables and seating. The surf lifesaving club operates seasonally and a boat ramp is available if you want to set sail into the blue. The beach is a popular location for nesting turtles, so take your torch if you plan on walking the beach after dark.
Bakers Creek
Take a selection of lures and cast a line into Bakers Creek, a 1km wide tidal creek which is located on the southern border of Mackay. At the creek mouth is an expanse of tidal flats, so best fishing is at high tide and when the tide begins its retreat. Dense mangroves fringe the creek shore, so look for a gutter running parallel to a mangrove-lined beach, a spot favoured by locals. Flathead is mainly caught there, but a variety is on offer, including Whiting, Bream, Grunter, Trevally, Barramundi and Mangrove Jack.
Finch Hatton Gorge
Hook Island is the second-largest island among the Whitsundays, and with much of the island covered in a dense national park, it’s a haven of exploration. Crayfish Beach has a camping area at its sandy shore, with some of the Whitsunday’s best snorkeling and swimming located only a few metres offshore. It is sheltered by a large rocky headland to the east, and mountains to the north and west. The camping area suits self-sufficient campers, so bring all of your own camping equipment, including a gas stove, rubbish bags, insect repellant and drinking water. With a maximum of 12 people permitted, it offers a serenity that can only be appreciated by staying there. Book your transfers and plan your next island camping adventure with Scamper.
Cape Hillsborough National Park
The rainforest literally meets the waters of the Great Barrier Reef at Cape Hillsborough National Park. It’s the most magically peaceful place to start the day. Watch the great golden sun rise from the water and cast a glow above the national park. Wallabies can be found on the beach at this time as they hop along the shore looking for a morning bounty from the ocean.
Lords Table Mountain, Dysart
Nothing compares to a dramatic outback sunset, where the sun deepens to a vibrant red as it falls behind the expansive plains. Located 35km west of Dysart, on the Dysart Clermont Road, the vibrant hues and rugged landscape surrounding this flat-topped mountain change with every minute of the setting sun. Set up camp and make traditional damper bread to toast over a fire, then lay back and watch the sky open up the brightest stars you’ve ever seen.
MACKAY GOLF CLUB THE JEWEL OF THE NORTH
A spectacular example of lush tropical rainforest, Finch Hatton Gorge provides a haven of cooling rock pools amongst the canopy of the Eungella National Park. The 1.6km walk from the picnic area leads to Araulen Falls. Walk a further 1.1km to the Wheel of Fire, an even more spectacular waterfall with massive boulders, fringed by rainforest. To get to the Wheel of Fire you need to climb a lot of steps, but the reward is well worth the sweat. There are many freshwater pools along the walk to cool off in along the way, including the deep pools at the base of these two beautiful waterfalls. 46 www.corelife.com.au
An easy walking 18 holes, the course provides a challenging but very playable game for players of all standards. Not only offering a superb golfing experience, the clubhouse facilities are open to the public whether golfing or not. Llewellyn Dive Site
Located off Mackay’s East Coast is the historic Llewellyn diving site, a shipwreck dating back to 1919, a steamer which departed Rockhampton never made it to its final destination of Bowen. The location of the vessel was a mystery until 1997 when remnants were discovered on the Great Barrier Reef, 35km east of Mackay. An exciting dive location, the broken wreckage is home to an array of marine life, including moray eels, grouper, snapper, turtles, sting rays and vibrant coral and tropical fish.

MORGAN HABER V8 supercar champion
Mount Panorama. It’s the place where dreams are both made and broken, where heroes become legendary and where tomorrow’s great racers are destined. To drive a V8 supercar on this challenging circuit is the dream of many, but only reality for a talented few.
The grandeur, grid girls and grunt of Bathurst may seem another world away but Mackay man, Morgan Haber, is proving that you don’t have to hail from the big city to see the checkered flag. Morgan was a rev head from as young as he can remember. His parents were fans of the roar of the V8’s and took him on trips to V8 Supercar events regularly. When he wasn’t watching the racing live, he was watching it on television. The smoking of the tyres, the screeching around corners and the pure speed, it was Morgan’s passion. He had a normal childhood, growing up in the tropical Mackay climate. A typical kid, he watched plenty of cartoons, ran around with mates and, to his own admission, got up to plenty of mischief. He played soccer, but he wasn’t as passionate about it as he was racing. However, even he admits, that passion didn’t initially translate into skill. “When I first started racing, I wasn’t very good.” “Dad bought me a motorbike one year for my birthday but almost every time I rode it, I managed to have a spill. After the last crash, I used some explicit language to describe how I felt about the bike, so dad though it would be a good idea to sell it.” “The first time I drove a kart I thought the experience was awesome, although I was quite slow. I fell in love with the experience and wanted to get one.” “At my first race meeting I was already nervous and, just before we went out to race a bloke in a different class, rolled. That put me off my game,” Morgan said. When Morgan was in grade eight, his parents arranged a special meeting

that would change his life”.
having the experience to hold him out from passing.
“My parents kept me home from school one day. I had no idea why but I certainly wasn’t complaining. During the day, a visitor arrived and to my surprise, it was Jason Bright and his engineer at the time, Phil Keed. My dad had arranged the meet through a Hastings Deering, (CAT) promotion.
Despite a chaotic university schedule, Morgan is a keen cyclist, a passion that began while growing up in Mackay.
“Phil asked me what I wanted to be when I grew up and I replied that I had dreamed of being a race car driver, but I didn’t think I’d make it, so I wanted to build them.
“I had put on a bit of weight when I was younger, so I began mountain biking to keep fit and get some of the weight off. That progressed to owning a road bike and I fell in love with the freedom I felt on the bike”.
“He told me that it’s not what you know, but who you know, and now you know me. That inspired me to do well at school, so I could enter university to study mechanical engineering. QUT was one of the few university’s that offered the course I wanted to do, so I moved to Brisbane to get my degree,” Morgan said.
“Cycling is great training for car racing because of the strength it gives to the legs, and also the heart conditioning. I haven’t put a heart-rate monitor on in the car, but I know some drivers get readings of upwards of 180 beats-per-minute. To be a great driver, you need great endurance and leg strength. Cycling replicates some of the strain drivers feel on their body while racing and, when temperatures exceed 40 degrees Celcius, it can get pretty tough,” Morgan said.
Morgan’s degree was as a back-up, in case he didn’t make the grade as a driver, but the talented local has proven he has what it takes to drive to success behind the wheel.
Morgan has gained inspiration from watching Marcos Ambrose, who accomplished a great deal within a short time. His biggest challenge and thrill will come from Bathurst.
After state and national titles kart racing, Morgan’s racing progression led to the step-up into V8’s, and, in 2012, Morgan joined with Matthew White Motorsport Team for the Kumho Tyres V8 Touring Cars. After a successful year, team owner Matthew White, saw the unique talent and determination Morgan had for the sport and, in 2013, Morgan was promoted to the V8 Supercar Dunlop Series.
“It’s the best track I’ve ever driven. It keeps you in check. I went well there last year, considering it’s one of the ballsiest tracks I know, and I felt I had more to offer, so this year I’m hoping for a great result,” Morgan said.
Making it into the V8 Supercar Series has been a dream come true for Morgan but his defining moment came earlier this year in Pukekohe, New Zealand, when he podiumed 2nd behind team-mate Greg Murphy. He fought from the back of the grid in wet conditions, but credited Murph for
While he doesn’t consider himself to be one of the most famous drivers on the track, he is fast establishing a reputation as talent to be watched. Hard-core motorsport fans are sitting up and taking notice and already the youngster has been approached for autographs. But for now, he’s happy to be doing what he’s always dreamed of, driving a V8 Supercar as fast as he can.

THE WRIGHT
attitude
From getting pelted by snow and hail at the base of New Zealand’s Southern Alps, to dodging kangaroos, snakes and emus under the intense heat of Central Queensland’s blazing sun, there’s little that will keep Hamish Wright from getting on his bike. The ex-pat Kiwi moved to Dysart with his wife Amanda in 2012, when he accepted a position with Holcim Concrete as manager of the Dysart and Nebo concrete plants. Despite the rough training conditions of the Isaac Region’s bumpy roads and isolation from competitive bike races, Hamish has pedalled his way to success at both a regional and national level. Hamish’s love for cycling began as a youngster, when a friend took him along to track cycling in his home town of Ashburton in New Zealand. Racing on a borrowed club bike, Hamish soon discovered his talent on the velodrome, and found that the money he won on club track nights would fund his obsession for Moro bars.
He rode the challenging Tasmanian carnival series in December before taking a clean sweep of events at the Morton Bay Cup on Wheels in Caboolture. At the Queensland Masters State Championships he came away with two silver medals and one bronze, then followed this up with a silver and a bronze at the Australian Masters Nationals in Melbourne.
Those Moro bars soon turned into medals and Hamish was selected to represent New Zealand in the U19 category at the Oceania’s in Townsville. He then competed for New Zealand as an elite at the Sydney Oceania’s in 2001, winning silver in the team sprint and bronze in his favourite event, the keirin.
His latest achievement was taking two gold’s and one silver at the RACQ North Queensland Games in Townsville.
As well as a 20 year career in the concrete industry, Hamish was also an officer with the New Zealand Army Reserves and became the first Kiwi Reserve Officer to lead an overseas deployment since the end of World War II. He was also part of a selected team chosen to bring New Zealand’s unknown warrior from France to the ceremonial tomb in Wellington. Spending time on deployment in third-world countries, such as the Solomon Islands, meant that time on the bike wasn’t always possible, but he never lost his passion for being on the saddle. With a new goal in sight, Hamish is training to represent Australia at the Masters World Track Championships in Manchester, England, in October this year. His preparations include riding at every track carnival he could manage to attend since moving to Australia, from Cairns to Brisbane and everywhere in-between.
With the world championships being held in the Northern Hemisphere, he knows he will have some tough competition from European cyclists who will be coming straight from their track season. He plans on keeping his endurance strong with competitive road racing, held by the Mackay Cycling Club, and then an intensive track-specific training regimen a few months out from competition. His biggest hurdle will be financial, as the cost of attending events to keep race-fit is not a cheap endeavour, but he plans to apply for commercial sponsorship to assist in travel costs to get him to the championships. Despite turning 40 in a couple of years, he doesn’t let his age deter him from hard competition in preparation for achieving his dream. To win a world championship title and wear the rainbow stripes would be his ultimate achievement. Luckily, he’s made of the ‘wright stuff’ to get him over the line.

thanks mate There’s nothing like a good mate. Whether you’re on the side of the road, at a work site or in the middle of the great Australian dessert, nothing compares with the versatility and practicality of Ute Mate. Designed and constructed locally in Mackay, the Ute Mate range of slide-on campers and tradies tool boxes are the ultimate demonstration of Australian ingenuity. Ute Mate’s inventor Terry Coad, originally made a slide-on camper for his own ute. As a cabinet-maker by trade, he had the skill and knowledge to develop one that suited his own needs. After receiving lots of enquiries, he decided to build them for other people. The Ute Mate can feature a custom-designed interior, so it will provide portable storage solutions for just about anyone. The camping-inspired Ute Mate features a patented double bed design under one side door, a fully set up kitchen when you lift the other side door and a big storage area in the middle through the back door. The benefits of hydrotherapy are widely known and used worldwide by elite athletes. Exercising in the water provides an all-over body workout, with maximum resistance and minimum impact. A swim spa provides the major benefits of owning your own swimming pool, but offers so much more. Using the power of jets, a swim spa provides a current to swim against, and is cheaper and easier to install than a swimming pool. It’s also portable, so you can take your investment when you move.
Invigorate and rejuvenate
Not only can you heat a swim spa to your desired temperature, you can also cool your water too, making it perfect for the hot summer months. With the benefits of a pool and a spa, a swim spa is the perfect place to swim, soak and relax.
Local and independent, Mackay Spa Shed are your spa specialists, and have been for more than 10 years. With a range of spas on display in their showroom, the experienced team can offer advice on the spa to best suit your needs. You can even arrange to try before you buy in privacy. While online purchases can leave the buyer with a faulty or inferior product, or not provide all the equipment and accessories needed, Mackay Spa Shed customers have the confidence and peace of mind of a quality product. Enjoy the invigorating benefits of a relaxing hot tub, or switch on the powerful swim jets to receive a low-impact workout, all in the privacy of your own backyard. www.corelife.com.au 53
SUPER lizard man
Motorsport. Whether on a circuit or a dirt road, it is an exciting endeavour for both spectators and competitors. When you add the word ‘super’ in front of the ‘moto’, you know you’re in for a real treat!
Zane Edmonds may only be 14 years old, but already the teenager has become a super title holder, by winning the S9 Class at the Australian supermoto championships in Proserpine last year. Supermoto combines all that is awesome about motorcycle racing and in its earlier day, was used as a way to bring both dirt and road motorcycle riders together, to determine a champion of champions. Today, it’s a specialised sport, held on a road circuit with dirt sections that combines flat track motocross and road racing together in one race.
When Zane was proficient on both the dirt and the road, supermoto was the logical next step for the youngster to try. He began racing in the S9 class, which is for ages 9 to 13, on an 80cc two-stroke bike. His season culminated by taking out the Queensland supermoto title for his class. He has now stepped up to the S8 class, which is a junior class on a more powerful 250cc, four-stroke machine. Zane experienced his first major supermoto crash earlier this year in Proserpine whilst qualifying for the Queensland championships.
Zane started racing motocross when he was five years old, through until he was 11. His father, Dean, raced on the road at the local kart track, and brought Zane some road wheels for his motorbike.
“I was a bit sore, and my bike was a little damaged, but still managed to keep up with a couple of the fast guys in my class. I was pretty happy with my results considering the crash,” Zane said.
He began road racing in Townsville on his KTM 85 in 2011 and then, when he was old enough in 2013, Zane joined the clubs corporate challenge, a road race where the club gives 12 juniors the exact same bikes to race and maintain for the year. This provides an excellent racing foundation for juniors to gain experience.
He’s looking forward to riding the Australian championships in June, which will be held at Proserpine, and then round two of the Queensland titles in Mareeba, in September.

Unlike other motorsports in Australia, North Queensland is lucky to have the best supermoto tracks in the country, with top-class tracks in Proserpine,

Townsville and Mareeba. This makes it easy for Zane to fit supermoto training in on weekends, as well as boxing for fitness during the week and motocross. When Zane is at the track he’s easily identifiable by his golden hair and blue eyes but it’s normally the bearded dragon that people notice first. Ted, the lizard, was a Christmas gift from Zane’s mum, and travels with him on all of the racing road trips. A new addition to the family, Daisy, now keeps Ted company in the box while Zane is racing, giving Zane the nic-name of ‘Lizard Man’ throughout the racing community. As with all sport, it comes with a price tag, Zane would like to give special thanks to Stay Upright rider training, Future Sport Motorcycles and Core Magazine for their support. Discover why Tasmania is quite possibly the most unique place on Earth.
TAS SIE A whole new world, but not a world away It has been likened to almost every country on Earth. ‘The Switzerland of the south’, with its snowcapped craggy mountains, or the lush rolling green hills of Ireland. Misty moorlands of buttongrass plains, resembling Scottish highlands, or the rows of vineyards and boutique cheese makers of Southern France. Moon-shaped bays of rolling waves crashing onto crystal-clear white sand, reminiscent of Hawaii, or a quaint country village from an English storybook. It only represents one percent of Australia’s total land mass but the vast diversity of our only island state has led to its recognition as being Australia’s heart-shaped world. The rugged, transcendent beauty will take your breath away, while the magnificently preserved history will open you heart. You may weep over perfectly fermented wine and swoon over the freshest seafood you’ve ever tasted. It’s a world on its own, but far from a world away. Are you ready to fall in love with Tasmania?
Tasmania is easy to navigate by car. You can drive from Launceston in the north to Hobart in the south, in less than three hours, but it is the hundreds of attractions you will see along the way that make Tasmania simply incredible. With more than 3.4 million acres of protected wilderness, including ancient rainforests, towering rock masses, cascading waterfalls and captivating lakes, dramatic nature is abundant around every corner.
South
Tasmania’s vibrant and historic capital city, Hobart, is located in the south of the state. Hobart’s colonial and convict past provides a rich history throughout, with 19th century sandstone architecture dominant on the waterfront. Salamanca Place is one of Tasmania’s most loved precincts. The sandstone Georgian warehouses are home to chic cafes, fine restaurants and art galleries. On Saturday, the Salamanca Market is a festival of the best of Tasmania, with hundreds of stalls selling everything from soap to sheepskin. The Port Arthur historical site is perched on the Tasman Peninsula, and is Australia’s best-preserved convict relic. Hobart is home to MONA, the privately-owned Museum of Old and New Art, with a reputation for being one of the best, if not controversial, art museums in the world.
East
Freycinet National Park is home to one of the most stunning beaches in the world, Wineglass Bay. Swim in the sheltered waters of Coles Bay and take the walk over the hill to Wineglass Bay, magnificent at sun rise. Spend a day walking through the Bay of Fires, with striking orange rocks contrasting with sparkling white beaches. Have your picture taken at the Bicheno blowhole, where you can stand on rocks while explosive water shoots up behind you, and then spend the evening on a famous Bicheno penguin tour. Enjoy a sumptuous meal at the Sea Life Centre, perched overlooking the ocean, serving mouthwatering lobster, scallops and oysters.
North East
Launceston, the charming city of Edwardian buildings nestled beside the striking beauty of the Cataract Gorge. Visit the botanical gardens by chairlift over the gorge, then take the walk down via suspension bridge. Eat and drink your way through the Tamar Valley, with boutique cheese makers, wineries and fruit growers, before visiting the aromatic Bridestowe Lavender Estate. At Jansz, taste Tasmanian-made sparkling wine while lying on a picnic blanket on the estates fields, overlooking a tranquil lake.
North West
As you drive from Launceston to Devonport your taste buds are in for a treat. Wineries, berry farms, the Cherry Shed, Ashgrove Cheese and Anvers Chocolate Factory are all must-stop attractions. Where you can sample before you buy for the ultimate paddock-to-plate experience. Explore the limestone caves of Mole Creek, rich in aboriginal history, or take a coastal drive to the lighthouse at Table Cape, passing fields of colourful spring tulips. King Island is a diver’s paradise with more than 70 shipwreck locations to explore. Cradle Mountain is one of Australia’s iconic wilderness experiences and is a world heritage site. The mountain rises above the glacially formed Dove Lake. It doesn’t come any prettier than this, mirrored lakes, rugged mountain-tops and colourful alpine vegetation.
West
Stay in serene Strahan, nestled on the Macquarie Harbour. Take a cruise past Hells Gate to the ruins of Sarah Island, one of Australia’s most feared penal colonies, before exploring the beauty of the Gordon River. Visit the 40km stretch of Ocean Beach, where the winds of the Roaring Fourties pass, scientifically proven as the purest air on earth. Step back in time and climb on board a majestic steam train as it winds its way through rugged bush to the West Coast town of Queenstown. A world apart, but not a world away. for the boys
FISHING!
with the kids I was in my car at the time when I suggested to my eldest boy, Reece, that if we get all the jobs done, we might go fishing later tonight. Through the rear view mirror the look on his face was unforgettable. His eyes lit up and he sat up straight in his car seat, he was excited. “I hope we get all the jobs done, dad. I really would like to go fishing”, he said. How could I deny that response? As a fishing charter operator I’m embarrassed to say I have hardly taken my two boys fishing. Reece, who just turned 6, and Shannon 3, up until recently have only experienced fishing from photos off dads camera or emails, movies and pics from my trips, from either myself or what clients have sent me. In my head I have said this is not good enough but at the same time I didn’t want to jam fishing down their throat too early as I want them to want to do it. Since that moment in the car, I have kind of started the bug and both boys are now keen as mustard. With new fishing rods for their respective birthdays the boys are set! For kids to enjoy fishing it doesn’t have to be complicated. I have found the “kiss” method is best ,“keep it simple stupid”! Fishing off a jetty or a boat with a simple bait catching jig is a very productive way of catching small fish and keeping the children entertained. One thing that kids lack is patience and that is often something required in the sport of fishing. This is where bait jigs shine as lots of little fish will usual jump on baited jig so it keeps the children well entertained. A good hint though is most bait jigs have 6 hooks/jigs. I like to cut them in half so your just dealing with 3 hooks at a time, which equates to half as many tangles! Although Reece got to the reef when he was a 2 year old, his first real trip came around over the Christmas school holidays. I set him up with a bait jig and he kept the live bait tank loaded for my guests all day long. He had lots of fun pulling in fusiliers and stripey sea bass and he got to see lots of other interesting stuff, like turtles, dolphins and even big sharks. One of the keys to getting the children involved is making sure it’s a memorable experience for all the good reasons. Taking them out in the boat is a fantastic adventure but if its going to be rough and they get sea 60 www.corelife.com.au
sick, then this could put them off fishing forever. You need to plan the trip well. Getting up at 5am and steaming to the reef for a days fishing then back late afternoon is probably not the usual day in the life of a youngster so, keep this in mind when planning your trip. Another great thing to do to get kids involved in fishing is join a club. Here locally in the Whitsundays, we have the “Whitsunday Game Fish Club”. The name “Game Fish” does seem to scare off some people as they think it’s all about the highly prized billfish and big boats etc. This is certainly not the case and the club has plenty of other outings, which are totally focused on getting families and especially kids involved. There are Barra comps, open species comps and, the best one of all, the “Sweeties and Squires” comp that is just for the ladies and the kids. I haven’t seen a child walk out of that competition presentation yet that wasn’t carrying either a fishing rod/reel or a big bag full of fishing tackle! What child doesn’t like to get a prize! Another great way of getting children interested in fishing is a simple fish chart/poster. Birthday presents this year have been posters of “fish of the Great Barrier Reef” stuck up in bedrooms and also a poster of Sharks of Australia. What child do sharks not fascinate? A child catching fish then later being able to identify them on the poster is another way of extending that enjoyment. From a parent’s point of view though how rewarding is it to see your child pull in a good fish? The excitement on their face is priceless and im actually unsure who is happier, the parent or the child! Maybe next time you’re asked “Can I watch that movie?” Or “Can play the game on the ipad?” Suggest getting outdoors and a session of fishing and it may start that bug that can lead to a lifetime of enjoyment.

Winston Churchill was famously quoted as saying “No hour of life is wasted that is spent in the saddle.” Evan Parker would be inclined to agree. Growing up on a farm in the Burdekin, life in the saddle has taken him all over the world but, having returned back to the same farm he grew up on, he knows that there’s no place like home. Evan is the eldest of four children and was born into a family who loved horses. His dad raced trotters and Evan describes his mum as being horse mad from as young as she could remember, who didn’t come from a horsing family herself, but from an early age loved them and loved to learn about them.
In the mid 1990’s, Evan was offered the opportunity to work for wellknown performance horse dealers, Equus Australia, in New South Wales. With this position came the opportunity to work for the legendary Rod Brown, a former Olympic equestrian athlete, Olympic coach and international equestrian champion.
“Even today she still rides and is the one up early on the farm feeding them and looking after them. It’s a love that never leaves you,” Evan said.
With his farming background, Evan was called upon for just about every task imaginable, from fixing fences to driving trucks as well as his work with training jumpers.
His parents took Evan and his siblings up and down the Queensland coast to competitions. His dad became the truck driver, farrier and strapper. Evan’s dad taught him how to shoe horses, saying that if he couldn’t afford to pay someone else to do it, he would need to learn himself. As a teenager, Evan met a trainer, Tony, who became a great influence on his career. Tony taught him techniques of handling horses that Evan had never seen before and he absorbed a lot of his teaching methods. From seeing Tony’s own business, he discovered how it was possible to make a living from doing what he loved, so, after he completed Year 12, he moved to Brisbane to work with the trainer for two years.
One day he may have been asked to drive to Melbourne to pick up horses or, other times, he was asked to bring his passport as that day he was flying overseas to accompany horses for delivery. “It’s an unreal feeling sitting in the cockpit of a cargo plane, knowing there were a great number of horses beneath us, ready to land in Europe or Asia,” Evan said. While it was exhausting, he felt a sense of freedom with the variation of tasks, and enjoyed the array of exciting possibilities that came his way. The position with Equus Australia didn’t earn huge amounts of money, but Evan
was fortunate to become friends with a farrier and used his shoeing skills to earn extra income on his days off. He finished his position with Equus Australia early in 2000, which opened the opportunity for Evan to volunteer labour at the Sydney 2000 Olympics. Being up close with all of his sporting idols was an incredible experience. All of a sudden, these people who were like ‘riding gods’ to Evan when he was a child, were all here in front of him. It was an exciting experience where he never wanted to miss any of the action, and also gave valuable insight into the behind-the-scenes organisation of an Olympic sport. A Danish man saw how hard Evan worked maintaining the riding surfaces at the Olympics, that he offered him a position in Switzerland for an international event Evan grabbed the opportunity to work within the equestrian industry in Europe but, after the completion of the show, Evan wanted to move back to Queensland, despite having a job offer in Switzerland.
“I’m a sucker for family and for Queensland, I missed home and my family so I wanted to move back,” Evan said. With a culmination of his experience, Evan rode and trained horses for a horse breeder from his family farm in the Burdekin. He then began to teach others riding and handling skills and has grown his own business. It’s a hard business to get into, with long hours, but Evan had the tenacity and stubbornness to keep at it until it worked for him. It was what he was born to do and, when you love what you do, you find a way to make it happen. A talented rider himself, Evan believes the best is yet to come. In a money-orientated sport, where riders can pay millions of Euro’s to import experienced top-level horses, Evan hasn’t yet had the opportunity to ride a top-class grand-prix horse in competition. He understood from a young age that ‘horsepower’ required a strong financial position, but he has enjoyed battling on average horses, with a desire to become the best rider he could be. He has spent the past seven years breeding his own horses, in an effort to breed his own super-star. It’s difficult to buy a super horse from a breeder, as a breeder knows an excellent horse when they see one, so they sell for top dollar. Evan has always preferred to ride his own horse, rather than having one provided for him, because of the uncertainty that the horse could be taken away at any time. He plans to spend the next few years campaigning young horses, an effort that will take a lot of blood, sweat, tears and sacrifice, but in the hope that something special will emerge. Through word of mouth, the main component of Evan’s business has become training children and teenagers to become better horse riders. It was never part of the plan but has evolved into a part of Evan’s life that he cherishes. He runs equestrian clinics throughout Queensland and is always thrilled to see younger riders grasp techniques and skills much faster than he once did. Put simply, Evan loves to ride, whether it’s cutting his teeth on a difficult horse, or breaking in a future jumping star. A horse ridden is freedom borrowed. The saddle is his sanctuary, his destination the horizon.

getting results If you are exercising to lose weight, you also need to be aware of what you are eating - a large percentage of your results comes from your diet! Don’t be tricked into thinking that because you’re training you can eat what you want – if you’re still eating unhealthy, fatty and sugary foods, none of which are nutritious, you’ll find that you won’t achieve your desired results. A large percentage of your results come directly from what goes into your mouth. Just like a car, if you want your body to perform well and efficiently, you need to feed it premium fuel. Your diet should be comprised of lean proteins, carbohydrates and healthy fats. Your body requires protein for growth, repair and maintenance. The preservation and growth of your muscles, hair, skin and nails all rely on protein. Lean meats, fish, chicken, eggs and dairy are all great sourcse of protein. Over the years, due to various low-carb diets, carbohydrates have received a bad name. However, our bodies need them to survive! Carbohydrates create energy; and they help the central nervous system function along with the kidneys, the brain, the muscles, including the heart. Following a very low carbohydrate will make you tired, feeling ‘out-of-it’, vague and prone to black-outs. So with that in mind, ensure you are choosing carbohydrates which are beneficial to your fitness goals. The best choices contain complex carbohydrates and fibre - those found in fruits, vegetables and whole grains. There are two kinds of carbohydrates: starchy ones found in potatoes and whole grains, and non-starchy ones found in fruits and vegetables. Focus on fruits and vegetables as your main
source of carbohydrates and eat the starchy ones in moderation. Stay away from sugar laden high-carb foods like baked good, biscuits, cakes, etc. Fat is also important when losing weight. Not all fats are bad. Saturated fats from animals like butter, cream, and cheese should be used sparingly. All visible fats should be cut off animal products like beef, pork, chicken etc. The best fats are omega-3 fats, which come from olive oil, avocado, flax seed oil, nuts, salmon and tuna. Remember to eat everything in moderation and watch portion control. It is a great idea to keep a food diary – you can be shocked at what you actually eat in a day when you have to write it all down. That extra accountability could be the difference between a good result and a GREAT result at your progress check-in. A recent study has shown that keeping a food diary can double a persons weight loss, so why not – it only takes a few minutes and with all the apps available these days, it’s easier than ever to keep track of your food intake! The important thing to remember is that if you want change to happen, you must make changes - for life!

We are bombarded every day with so much information on how to care for our skin that it becomes so confusing to work out what does what and what actually works. It is important to eat well, drink plenty of water, exercise and live a stress free life but we still need to help our skin to look the best it possibly can. I call these active ingredients Cosmetic Medicines, in that they have been shown to promote healthier, more refreshed, youthful skin and slow down the appearance of ageing. There are a number of these but the most important is as easy as the ABC. Vitamin A helps promote cell turnover and produce new collagen. This over time improves the appearance of fine lines and the overall texture and tone of the skin. Vitamin B (B5 and B3) is a skin cell regulator that improves the hydration and health of your skin cells. It gives your skin a great glow, prevents pigmentation and current studies have revealed it may be helpful in preventing skin cancer. Vitamin C is a strong anti-oxidant which prevents toxins from damaging your skin. Last but the most important is a high SPF Sunscreen, if possible includes zinc which acts as a barrier to harmful rays and has an anti-inflammatory effect on the skin. If this simple regimen of medical grade ABC and Sunscreen is used every day it can help prevent, maintain and improve our skin with time and really keep us looking as young as we feel.

Supporting your immune health Boosting your energy levels Supporting your joint health Supporting your digestive function Promoting muscle strength, endurance and recovery Reducing food cravings Protect all your tissues’ cells via its antioxidant properties Stabilizing hormone levels and improving brain function Supporting your body’s optimal metabolic rate and fat burning level
Personally, I enjoy drinking a quality whey protein shake -- there’s no better way to start the day or finish a workout than with a tasty cold protein shake. That’s why it’s important for you to know why not all Whey Protein is created equal. For starters, many commercially-available whey protein powders are significantly damaged and nutritionally deficient due to over-processing and because the original source of the whey is compromised. About Time® is the first Grass Fed, Naturally sweetened Cold Processed Ultra Filtered Whey Protein Isolate which is Lactose Free, Gluten Free, Soy Free and tastes amazing. Technology no substitute for knowledge Have you outlaid thousands of dollars on a set of hearing aids? Were you assured these devices were the best hearing aids available? Did you find yourself disappointed and confused when they turned out to provide you with little or no benefit?
not realise is that the hearing aid technology is only a small portion of what is needed to have a successful outcome. Much more important are the hearing specialist’s clinical skills and knowledge base which accompany the latest technology.
needed something to help them hear their wife, television and to hear the telephone a bit clearer. This results in a significant waste of money as the patient could have been fitted with a device which would address their problems at a quarter of the price.
Unfortunately, we live in an age of marketing where we are bombarded daily with television and radio advertising, junk mail, telemarketing and other mediums all promising the world.
Firstly, a skilled clinician must gain an accurate idea on what may be the cause of the hearing problem. Different types of hearing losses require a different type of hearing aid. Often people will spend thousands of dollars on the top of the range hearing aid which was completely unsuitable for their type of hearing loss and subsequently they were no better off.
The opposite is also frequent where extremely active people in demanding environments have been fitted with hearing devices which either lack or have poor quality features to help them in these settings.
Hearing products and hearing companies are not immune to this and consumers are cleverly targeted with promises of the latest ground breaking technology to return your hearing. In part this is true, the technology has most certainly advanced to a level where we are extremely close to replicating normal hearing and most communication problems can be fixed or at the very least substantially improved. However, what most people do
Secondly, you need an accurate description of lifestyle. Again, it is common to see people fitted with hearing aids which are a top of the range device with all the bells and whistles to help them in the most demanding and noisy environments yet they are elderly, rarely go into these places and really just
Thirdly, the accuracy of the hearing assessment is paramount. A simple clinical error can result in the hearing aid being set up incorrectly for the hearing loss. Needless to say the result is a very poor one for the hearing aid wearer regardless of device quality. Another important skill is the clinician’s ability to set the hearing aid up to accurately reflect the wearer’s hearing loss, lifestyle, communication needs and cogni-

tive and physical capabilities. Counseling on how to use and get the most out of the features of the hearing aid is also crucial. Finally and probably one of the most important skills is being able to troubleshoot and fix any problems experienced by the hearing aid wearer. So remember you can spend thousands of dollars on the latest technology but it is wasted if the clinician does not have the appropriate skills or knowledge base to utilize the lifestyle investment.

Miracles can come in 3’s “It’s positive!” For couples trying to start their own family, those words are unforgettable. After two and half years of trying for a baby, Kate Horan remembers a conversation with a close friend that would change her life forever. Kate’s friend had read an article about a successful pregnancy, thanks to the help of Dr Scott Martin from Australian Natural Fertility. The couple featured in the article were experiencing issues with conception but found success after trying Dr Martin’s natural acupuncture treatment. Her friend knew that IVF was a path that Kate and her husband were considering, so she showed her the article. This option appealed to Kate more than the IVF process, so she and her husband Wes made an appointment with Scott. “Scott’s positivity was just what we needed to hear. After trying for more than two years, you can start to lose a bit of hope. Hearing assurance from Scott was what we needed to get us back into a positive frame of mind. He made us believe it was possible,” Kate said. Kate and Wes both underwent treatment, acupuncture once a week and herbal medicine twice daily. Wes’s treatment focused on encouraging the body to produce good quality sperm, while Kate’s treatment was targeted at getting her body prepared for nine months of pregnancy. Getting
the
family
pregnant is the start of the journey, but it isn’t complete until the baby is carried to full term and delivered safely. Kate and Wes experienced immediate success, with a positive pregnancy test resulting within six to eight weeks of the start of their treatment. Kate was so thrilled, she shared her experience with her best friend who had also been trying for a baby. The tears of joy continued to flow when Kate’s friend, who had decided to seek Scott’s treatment after hearing Kate’s success, also announced she was pregnant too. The miracles within the group of close-knit friends kept coming, when her best friend’s brother and his wife also had success after treatment at Australian Natural Fertility. What started as the joy of conception for one couple soon resulted in three successful pregnancies within the group of friends, who had all experienced Scott’s natural treatment. Kate and Wes’s wee miracle Cody is now three and a half years old and the happy couple would like to experience the joy of a second child. Without hesitation, they plan on visiting Scott at Australian Natural Fertility again, for a positive and reassuring beginning to their new journey. Kate and Wes are currently seeing Scott in an attempt for their second child. For more information contact Scott at Australian Natural Fertility on 07 4944 1279

Local Solutions for your Allergies Itchy eyes, sneezing, runny nose, skin problems and asthma – all common symptoms from allergies. These are no longer symptoms you have to put up with and suffer forever! With improved allergy testing and desensitization, you can now stop these symptoms and improve your quality of life! Allergy testing is most accurately performed by Skin Prick Testing which can give you accurate information about which items you react to and how strong each reaction is. With this information, a specific program of desensitization can be designed for your particular needs. The desensitization process does take several months with weekly injections or daily drops in the mouth. Reduction in symptoms usually occurs over the first few months and the initial treatment lasts at least 3 months. The cost is comparable to what you would usually be paying for anti-histamines and other over the counter treatments. The improvement that is achieved is long term – fantastic! These treatments have been difficult to organize in the past with the allergy specialists only visiting Rockhampton monthly and waiting times of months. Happily now, we have doctors trained in allergy medicine in Mackay to perform these tests and initiate the desensitization programs. Also appointments can be organized within a few days with four doctors able to provide these services locally. This is great news for the residents of the Mackay region – let’s aim to develop medical services that lead the country, not just the region!
