Change is often a scary concept, but it is what we need to grow. Sometimes, the best thing we can do is close our eyes and jump, taking a leap of faith which will inevitably guide the remainder of our journey. Surrounding yourself with the right people makes it easier to take that first step.

2017 will be the year that Core Life Magazine will take the plunge into the unknown, paving the way for a bigger publication with greater community engagement and exciting opportunities for advertisers through the business’s continued expansion. Owner and former editor, Rebecca Douthwaite, is stepping up into an editor-in-chief role, to focus on the expansion of her publishing group. Rebecca’s publishing career started at the age of 23 in Cairns with the creation of her first magazine, City Life. City Life grew from one publication in Cairns, to a second in Townsville and then expanded into Mackay and the Whitsundays in 2006. The publication group was sold in 2007 and Rebecca’s passion for starting something bigger and better grew over the next four years. She launched Core Life in 2011. Originally a men’s lifestyle publication, the magazine evolved into a community-focused business and lifestyle publication, which spans the Mackay, Isaac and Whitsunday regions. “With many advertising mediums on offer Core Life has stood the test of time and, to this day, is known as the regions own lifestyle, business and community publication,” Rebecca said. 2015 saw the birth of Core Life Publishing’s second magazine, Tripping, a travel and tourism publication featuring North Queensland, from Cape Tribulation and Cairns in the far north to as far south as Mackay. “Our advertisers have the unique ability to not only reach their target market locally, but to also capture the attention of our readers long before they arrive. I am 8 www.corelife.com.au

proud of what we have been able to achieve over the past six years and this has set the tone for an exciting expansion of the company in 2017.” “Although it is too early to announce the finer details, I can say that we are extremely excited and enthusiastic about the upcoming growth of our publishing group. The expansion of both our publications and team will offer our clients a new and exciting platform, with a greater market reach. We will also be launching our new interactive website and online presence in early 2017. The combination of which will only strengthen and secure our ongoing position in the market as a unique and affordable advertising medium that has something for everyone,” Rebecca said.

With big shoes to fill, Core Life’s former advertising sales manager, Rachael Thackray, has risen to the position of managing editor for both Core Life and Tripping magazines. Rachael has been with Core Life for two years and her enthusiasm and passion for the publishing industry will play an integral part in the upcoming expansion. “As a business owner I don’t have to tell you how important it is to have the right team behind you. I have been blessed to have such a team and a fiercely loyal client base.” “Rachael is someone who has taken her passion for magazines, her clients and her love for writing, and proven that with hard work and dedication, amazing things can happen,” Rebecca said. Formally from the United Kingdom, Rachael travelled the world after graduating from the University of Manchester and found her new home in Australia. With an entrepreneurial spirit, Rachael operated a charter business here in the Whitsundays with her husband, Dayle, and owned a café business in Brunswick Heads in

NSW. Her heart has always been in print media so she jumped at the opportunity to begin working for a local newspaper in 2012 before joining the Core Life team in 2014. Rachael is also a committee member for the Whitsunday Writers Festival. “I am thrilled to be offered the opportunity to become managing editor of Core Life and Tripping Magazine and deeply honoured that Rebecca has put her faith in me, to be her right hand man. I am 100 percent dedicated to my new role and look forward to working with the community and our team to bring two amazing, well-loved publications to life each month,” Rachael said. Rebecca commented, “Although I will still be overseeing all departments within the company, my focus will also be on our expansion. I have had to wait for the right team to make this possible and I know, without a doubt, I am now ready for the dreams of expanding this company to come true.”

As Core Publishing and Events moves into a new exciting era, I am proud to be by Bec’s side and thrilled to be along for this adventurous ride. If my childhood self could see me now I think she would be thrilled too.

Thanks for being part of this meaningful moment and I look forward to sharing many more with you throughout the year.

With Core Life Magazine I found this career. I have also found a working environment within which I could thrive. Under the guidance of Rebecca Douthwaite, my Mentor and owner of Core Publishing and Events, I have learnt what it takes to get a magazine to print each month. It takes dedication, passion and grit. And, it is only possible to create a successful, meaningful publication if you are passionate about what you do.

Whatever that moment is for you, that very first time, I hope it’s an unforgettable one!

To get here I have worked long hours at jobs I’ve hated, counting the hours, minutes and seconds until I could go home. This was until one day when I realised that eight and half hours a day is a long time to spend bored, doing a job I hate. I owed it to myself to pursue a career I feel passionately about.

I hope that you have many moments; just like the one I am sharing with you. A moment, when the sum total of your hard work and passion comes to life, becomes real. A moment you will cherish forever.

This is what makes me so excited to share this amazing first-time moment and milestone, with you. It’s one I will remember forever, even if you don’t! This is my first ever editor’s note, something I have dreamt about since I was a young girl.

We hope you enjoy our first issue of 2017.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM

Woman In Business

2017 Ladies! Don’t miss our BIGGEST issue of the year!

Chantal Apruzzese Chantal first came to the Whitsundays 13 years ago and like many long-term locals, she fell in love with the view of the turquoise Coral Sea as she drove over the hill into Airlie Beach. She also fell in love with the easy-going party atmosphere Airlie beach has to offer and worked at Mama Africa for several years. Chantal knows a lot about the entertainment industry and the type of marketing that works best, a specialty skill she will be bringing to her new role at Core Life Magazine. Four years ago Chantal decided to retire from full-time hospitality work and made the move into media sales, working for a local newspaper. It was here that she discovered, not only did she have a talent for sales and marketing, she also loved it! Working alongside local businesses is still something she is passionate about to this day. Chantal met her fiancé, Jason, a few years ago and is getting married in May 2017. Together they have gorgeous twin boys called Hudson and Harvey. The twins are now 18 months old and causing chaos wherever they go!

What’s your favourite movie? “Experiencing it first-hand with my twin boys, I understand that parenting is not a perfect picture. For this reason ‘Bad Moms’ would have to be my favourite movie at the moment. It is such a breath of fresh, funny air.”

What star sign are you? “My star sign is Scorpio and I am also half Italian, that makes me very ‘passionate’ and a little eccentric with a touch of arm waving!”

What is your favourite quote? ‘Don’t be embarrassed by your failures, learn from them and start again’

2017 The year ahead

Aries

(March 21- April 20)

Lucky Colour: Cream Lucky Day: Monday Racing Numbers: 9.6.2.3. Lotto Numbers: 9.12.23.36.34.45.

Public organizations or meetings could be in the pipeline. Friend’s moods or actions could be a cause for concern, but by using that charm you should be able to sort it out. The holiday period could bring community obligations which could interfere in some of your social activities. Do not try to do more than is humanly possible, you need to rest also. A very intense period for your love affairs, do not let passions run away with you. Moderation in all things and make sure your mate understands what you want them to know and avoid misunderstandings. Many will learn the difference between love and sex. A better time to find solutions concerning past problems. You’re looked on as being impatient and as being compulsively drawn towards speculative types of investments. If you resist gambling or borrowing against future earnings, you might lead yourself to beneficial investments. Beware of get rich quick schemes, because you’re easily tempted. You’d be better off curbing your impulsiveness and seeking professional advice about slow growing stocks and dividends. You also have to keep calm if your funds get low, because you tend to panic at the first sign of bad luck. Use either loan services or cash stocks rather than withdraw from the bank. Although your best investment will probably be in hard metals, you’ll rarely be lucky if you invest in a goldmine. Other good investments are iron and steel shares, building materials such as slate, sand and cement and road and bridge building investments.

Gemini

(May 21- June 21)

Lucky Colour: Yellow Lucky Day: Wednesday Racing Numbers: 9.6.5.3. Lotto Numbers: 9.15.26.35.36.3.

A good time to be in the company of your family. However, you could be tempted to speak out too freely and this could bring trouble to some. A favorable period for career matters and the right time to mend disagreements of late. Could be a more irritable period than usual and your domestic or love life could suffer in process. Be prepared to see both sides of any situation and to keep a friend you must be a friend. There could be more strain around the work area, so watch your health and make sure you get time to relax as well. Most will need to rely more on their own efforts as friends or workmates may not be very reliable. This period will find you in first place and you finish by a nose, brown nosing that is. Well we all have to do that sometime or another, if the stakes are high enough. Eating humble pie now will lead you into a better position later. Once you realize that great things start off small, you stand a chance of becoming fortunate in your investments. You’re very conscious of the fact that money is your means of getting many of the luxuries you enjoy, but don’t jeopardize the luxuries you already have. Even before you invest, study your income and budget. If there’s a gap between them, forget investing until you’ve managed to save even a small amount. When you’re investing large sums, get an expert to advise you. For the small sums, its better to follow your intuition. The best type of investment for you is electronics. Another sound investment is anything to do with paper products, such as stationary or publishing. Other good investments are railway shares; duplicating machines; and word processing computers. 14 www.corelife.com.au

Taurus

(April 21- May 20) Lucky Colour: Peach Lucky Day: Tuesday Racing Numbers: 5.6.2.3. Lotto Numbers: 5.12.24.40.26.33. Legal matters should be successfully handled during this period and many could find some genuine bargains whilst shopping. Personal interests are favored. However, someone else’s problems could rest upon your shoulders. You could be moving about a lot and enjoying it less, if people try to organize you too much just tell them. There could be an enjoyable family celebration coming up. This period will bring a lot of changes mostly improvements. A good social time and many new beginnings friendships and career matters. If anyone is cramping your style you will gain by ignoring them. You will have to keep that temper under control or you can alienate those who had your best interests at heart. Don’t get carried away with spending or picking up the tab for others. You’re one of the most fortunate star signs because you respect money and realize it’s a necessary item. Because of this trait, you’re prudent in handling money. You aren’t likely to be tempted by get rich quick schemes. The only time you buy anything impulsively is when you aren’t under pressure to make money. You think about how you can live on your income before you try to expand it. Having any bond issues satisfies your desire to dabble in the stock market, and you’ll be satisfied enough with making a steady seven per cent on your outlay. You’re likely to make as much money investing in real estate as you are in the stock market. Other good investments are cattle producing, copper, banks, leather goods, finance and tobacco shares.

Horoscopes Guide Cancer

(June 22- July 22) Lucky Colour: Blue Lucky Day: Thursday Racing Numbers: 4.6.2.5. Lotto Numbers: 4.12.25.29.8.4 You could be concerned about a matter that is working itself out. Avoid fighting with family and or friends as you will not be able to repair the damage done. On with the new and off with the old. In many cases this could cause a bit of a problem, but you must be ruthless if you want things to change. Make sure everything you sign you read properly. If you rush you could make mistakes and start all over again ask for help if you think you cannot manage. Keep away from appliances you do not understand and keep your fingers away from hot spots. There is a possibility of a romantic interlude with someone you least expected and some good luck could come with a friend. People could be asking for your help in something that you are good at. If anyone is capable of withdrawing from the brink of financial disaster, it’s you. Your good fortune streak also works in another way: you’re quite likely to blindly invest in something then surprise the professionals by making the financial coup. Although this gift isn’t something you can rely on, if you combine using your intuition with studying the stock market and also time your investments wisely, your income will steadily increase. However, you tend to procrastinate and can be easily diverted from your original ideas. You can obtain good returns from oil, the wine and spirit industry or any investments to do with the ocean. Other good investments are farming properties and real estate, building societies, water board shares, catering and the milk board.

Leo

(July 23- August 22)

Lucky Colour: Violet Lucky Day: Monday Racing Numbers: 4.6.5.2. Lotto Numbers: 4.7.12.26.35.36.

You have been thinking of making changes in your home or career affairs the time could be now. Most should be off to a good start in personal achievements. Try to keep your nose clean as far as your family is concerned they might not appreciate any advice just now. It might be a good time to look a little further ahead and learn from your experience. If you have worked hard in the past, now is the time to collect. People will appreciate your efforts and it will benefit you in the long run. Feeling of good health and happiness should prevail. Very good news in the business front and financial matters should work out well. Try not to be too absent minded or you could get yourself into a tight spot where it could be hard to get out. You’re always so impressed by the way other people live life that you mix with people who persistently make investments, some of their enthusiasm rubs off on you. Unfortunately, though these investors rarely tell you about the mistakes they have made, so try to invest on your own rather than go by what other people say. You’re easily tempted into buying into get rich schemes. If you’re fortunate enough to have a good income you’re likely to prosper through your investments, but if you already have financial worries your good judgment can become impaired. You’d be better off seeking professional advice before investing. Real estate and stocks to do with all types of automation are your best form of financial investment.

Virgo (August 23- September 23)

Lucky Colour: Orange Lucky Day: Sunday Racing Numbers: 3.6.9.5. Lotto Numbers: 9.5.12.24.45.40.

A rather romantic period. A good time to push your luck in your love life. Property mattes are favorable and could bring good returns. A chance for a lost object to be found. There could be a possibility of a short trip or visit to someone dear coming up shortly. Also people are pressing you for an answer to an important question very soon. Loved ones should be bringing good news and reunions with people from far away could be possible now. Good idea to look for expert advice in financial or real estate matters. You could find it difficult to manage your affairs alone so look for professional help rather than friends for advice. Travel will be very much on your mind and some plans could be started now. You’re one of the zodiacs most careful people. You’re happiest when you feel financially secure. You might take a long time to make up your mind and therefore miss out on acting on the best market trends. It’s as much a mistake to become over cautious as it is to be reckless. You can make your fortune through making judicious investments and opportunities can open up for you to use money in many exciting ways without posing a threat to your need for security. Long term investments such as planning a personal business venture are likely to appeal to you, whereby you can put your stocks and shares into the background. This strategy could prove to be profitable, especially for personal business ventures to do with paper. Other good investments are pharmaceutical products, food; cereals, health foods, the garment industry and all industrial shares. www.corelife.com.au 15

Libra

(September 24- October 23)

Lucky Colour: Green Lucky Day: Tuesday Racing Numbers: 8.6.5.2. Lotto Numbers: 8.12.26.35.40.22.

You must work harder than you planned for this time of the year and your returns will also surprise you. Family relations should be on the improve and a happy mood should prevail. Telling it straight is what you do best, except this time your info needs checking or it could trigger a monumental mess. Get the facts straight before shooting off your mouth, and then keep a low profile. Keep any new plans for ventures on ice for the moment. It is party time and for once you can afford to cut loose something more than hot air. Having a fling with someone shady could land you in hot water. Take time to cheer up a friend who might be down in the dumps. Your little reserve could suddenly go up in smoke. You could feel deserted. There seems to be a shortage of cash over this period. There also is a tendency for your secrets to be revealed so keep them to yourself. For you, money has a see saw effect: your financial situation is forever going up and down. When it comes to making investments, you have to learn to be more self sufficient whereby you rely on your own good sense rather than on friend’s advice. Save and invest whatever you can, but limit yourself to businesses to do with either beauty or art. In the long run, areas such as hairdressing, design or personal creativity are more advantageous for you than the stock market speculation so leave wall- street to the financiers, who are more used to it. Other good investments are luxury items such as diamonds, furs and art works. T.V. and radio shares; the music industry; and the entertainment industry.

Sagittarius

(November 23- December 20)

Lucky Colour: Green Lucky Day: Saturday Racing Numbers: 5.6.2.1. Lotto Numbers: 5.12.45.40.9.7.

If you know what you want, go ahead and the results will surprise you. Popularity with the opposite sex will bring some happy times and more invitations. Many will be branching out too many new ways of furthering their financial options. Family or close friends could be creating problems mostly in conflict with your plans. Don’t let things slide financially, or you might as well light the B.B.Q with the money. After than you can let your hair down and have yourself a ball or two. Neighborhood hassles could evolve into a lousy situation and out you through a load of changes you are not ready for. You’ll have either to take drastic action or find yourself another abode. You may have to step on a few toes, but don’t be shy about it. If you have a bit more money available, it comes easier for you to let your gambling instincts carry you along in a modest way. Spending money without wondering where the next few dollars will come from is a form of freedom you haven’t experienced that can be added to your book of life. Be prudent enough to make sure you have some money left in your saving account. Perhaps spend half this money at once on your investments and don’t touch the rest until you’re making money on the investments. You’d do best to invest in a travel agency, especially if you have a personal interest in it. Although all types of transport stock interest you, it’s best if you stay away from airline shares. Other good investments are tin; copper; oil; mining; insurance; and petroleum-corporation stock.

Scorpio

(October 24- November 22)

Lucky Colour: Mauve Lucky Day: Wednesday Racing Numbers: 5.2.3.1. Lotto Numbers: 5.12.23.32.20.3.

You might talk yourself into more work if you are not careful but if that is what you want go ahead and you will find offers filling up more than expected. Many will be taking on new challenges and improving their financial prospects. Love affairs improve and travel could have a lucky streak attached to it. Your domestic scene could be the cause of irritation and friction unless you learn to be more adaptable. Many could be changing home addresses or moving to new career situations. Many will become very conscious of themselves and their appearances and some will become very public figures. Good results concerning career options are indicated. You’re somewhat fearful of adventuring into financial affairs. You hate failure of any kind, and for you the stock exchange doesn’t seem as tantalizing and glamorous as it does for many other people. You’re likely to maintain one or two modest investments that offer small but regular dividends and to be content with a dramatic plunge every few years. Although investments in household equipment mightn’t sound exciting, you can do very well in these types of financial venture whereby because you’re obtaining steady returns you’re left free to find adventure in other spheres. Other good investments are brewing; spirits; wines; dyes; drugs; laundering; chemical investments and surgical investments.

Capricorn

(December 21- January 19)

Lucky Colour: Dark Blue Lucky Day: Wednesday Racing Numbers: 1.3.2.5. Lotto Numbers: 1.12.15.26.36.37.

Your future will be very much in your mind during this period. Some positive steps towards your goal will be achieved and a surprise gain will help you to speed things up. This is a very good period in all aspects and many of your long time wishes could come true now. There is a busy time ahead for work and domestic matters and more social life than you have had for some time. You could come up with some brilliant ideas during this period but you must use your contacts and some push to get things going the way you want them to. Some news for far away could bring some happiness. Some big changes in your domestic sector could be a move or maybe you are re decorating your home. Your love life is in for a lift and some happy moments are coming your way with loved ones. Your chances of success depend on how well you can survive difficulties and turn bad events into good ones. Only you can release yourself from your inner fears by remaining optimistic. If it’s emotionally difficult for you to withdraw your savings, leave your money in a savings account rather than speculate. Your best type of investment is a partnership, because having someone else’s help gives you confidence. Stocks and shares to do with transport, engineering and communications such as a telephone system usually cause you less pain than other investments do. Other good investments are government stocks and bonds; coal mines; cement bricks; building supplies; and real estate insurance.

Lots of trips around and some long distance travel are in the planning stages. Make sure you consider all the possibilities and check all the appointments and bookings.

There will be plenty to do even if you don’t want to go anywhere but if you get the chance to do some small trips at least money matters should be much better than you expected.

You might not be feeling very enthusiastic about some social event. It would be a good idea to attend any way. Many things could change in your life as a result of it. People are looking for your company.

Take very good care of your health now or you could miss out on a happy occasion where you could meet someone special. You could be in a position to acquire something you have been hoping for.

If you want the job well done you better do it yourself or look for someone with a good reputation of handling things. Romantic affairs should be progressing well or you could find the right one. You should be able to achieve much more during the next few weeks then what has been happening lately.

Try not to get upset about trivial things some people might not be as tactful as they could be. Make sure your business matters are taken care of and bills paid on time to avoid hassles. Money management should be on the top of your list of priorities at this point of time, there could be some deception around you so keep away from unknown dealings stick with the tried and trusted.

Career matters and personal goals will be very much in the forefront now. As each year ends, you find yourself wondering why you’ve worked so hard but you have so little in the bank to show for it. You aren’t the most fortunate of investors, because you can be carried away by spending money on the products of your own inventive mind. It’s a sad fact that many Aquarians make the world’s greatest inventions but that other people make the money from the inventions. The only beneficial type of land investment for you is usually your own house, because owning it makes you feel independent. This type of investment is a major source of happiness for you. If you can, you might buy two houses; one to live in and one to rent. Although this strategy appeals to you because it’s logical, in practice it’s rarely a success and it can often produce more hardship. Small investments in electronics can be beneficial for you. Other good investments are aviation; electricity; Television and radio; computers; health food and government stocks.

When you’re forced to realize that money is necessary even for a creative person such as you, you pass the turning point and can begin to study matters such as investment. You’ll probably work by intuition in the world of stocks and share, and you might even buy a stock for no better reason than that you like its name. The experts are always amazed when you score a bull’s eye. Having several small ventures is more likely to appeal to you than making one grand splash on the stock market, unless you have a very good income. Stocks to do with travel or liquids often yield the best money for you. Other good investments are footwear; cooking oils; fabric manufacture; cosmetics; and the entertainment industry.

CURRENCY WARS CURRENCY WARS ARE ONE OF THE MOST DISRUPTIVE AND FEARED OUTCOMES IN INTERNATIONAL ECONOMICS AND THE 1ST OF OCTOBER 2016 WILL BE SEEN BY HISTORIANS AS A “WATERSHED MOMENT”. The $US retains its value because it is the world’s major trading currency but its days in this role are numbered. The International Monetary Fund (I.M.F) and China are pushing for the creation of a new global reserve currency. Actually, it won’t be a currency. It is called “a special drawing right”, known as SDR, but the SDR is neither a currency nor a claim on the I.M.F. The reason 1st October 2016 will be seem as a “watershed moment” in history, is because it was on this day that the Chinese RMB was included in the basket of currencies that form the base value of the SDR. The other four major currencies that the value of the SDR is based on are:

• • • •

US Dollar Euro Japanese Yen Pound Sterling

As the $US loses its status as the world’s major trading currency, its value will drop. Whilst this will have a negative effect on the lives of most Americans, an upside is that a lower $US will make their exports more attractive and could possibly revive their manufacturing industries

Producing custom-designed timber joinery for discerning clients, Cedar Bend Timber Joinery is a family business with a reputation for quality and craftsmanship. Owners, Ben and Jodie Ferdinand, purchased timber joinery machinery three years ago from a local business which was closing down, to complement their building company, Coastal Edge Constructions. The addition of Cedar Bend means they can control the quality of the joinery offered to clients and to add unique statement pieces into their award-winning homes. “With the two businesses working together, Clients are able to work with us on many facets of their build; from the initial planning of construction, through to kitchen design, custom bathroom fit-out, cabinetry, the possibilities for custom-features are limitless,” Jodie said. Sourcing quality timber from within Australia and overseas, Cedar Bend’s talented tradesmen transform rough-sawn planks into grand works of art. If it’s made of timber, they can build it! suit the style and functionality requirements of the business. “Our workmanship and specialist knowledge of timber makes us very popular with architects, resulting in many of our pieces making their way into some of the finest houses in The Whitsundays, particularly on Hamilton Island,” Jodie said. An example of how glorious timber joinery can create a dramatic style statement can be seen in ‘Kahala,’ a home built by Ben and his team from Coastal Edge Constructions. The spectacular Hamilton Island home won the Master Builders 2016 House of the Year award for Mackay and Whitsunday region. The home features 120 custommade doors, timber vanities in the five bathrooms, book shelves, bi-fold doors and windows, a staircase and a breathtaking timber kitchen. “We have also returned to Hamilton Island’s qualia resort to create more timber pieces for the exclusive retreat. We’re not restricted to just land either, last year we carried out work on a 120ft super yacht moored at Abell Point Marina for a month,” Jodie said. Summer SURF GIRL SURF AND SUMMER GO HAND-IN-HAND, BUT WHILE THE WAVES PROVIDE COUNTLESS HOURS OF FUN, IT’S NOT WITHOUT RISK. SURF LIFESAVERS AND LIFEGUARDS ARE DEDICATED TO KEEPING BEACH-GOERS SAFE IN THE WATER. THEY PUT THEIR LIVES ON HOLD TO HELP PRESERVE OURS, BUT TO KEEP PATROLLING THE BEACHES, THEY NEED OUR HELP. Elise Lambert took her love of the water to a new level when she became a lifesaver at 16 years of age. She then became a professional lifeguard at 18 while she was studying as a registered nurse, and has been a member of Mackay Surf Lifesaving for six years. Elise is participating in Queensland’s Summer Surf Girl program, a member development program which seeks to embolden female lifesavers while also raising much-needed funds for local surf lifesaving clubs. She will spend up to 12 months fundraising for her club and raising surf safety awareness in the community, before heading to Brisbane for judging in May. This will give her the chance to become an official ambassador for Surf Life Saving Queensland, after being judged on elements such as her core surf lifesaving skills and knowledge as well as community spirit. Saving lives and protecting others is a virtue which runs deep with Elise. After finishing her nursing degree in 2013 she did her postgraduate at Longreach and Blackall. In 2015 she started working in the Special Care Nursery, beginning her certificate in neonatal nursing. In 2016 she used her knowledge and skills to volunteer in Vanuatu. The allure of beautiful beaches and snorkelling, as well as the opportunity to help poorer communities, aligned with her passions. “My first two days at the hospital were a shock to the system. They all operate on ‘island time’ therefore the morning shift turned up more than an

hour late. My second day on the job didn't get much better. I had a critically ill baby, and the nurse in charge left me in the unit by myself for six hours, which is not uncommon there.” “The Ni-Vanuatu nurses do an incredible job with the limited resources they have. The experience reminded me a lot of my remote nursing, where I had to think on my feet with limited amount of equipment and medication on hand,” she said. To enter the Summer Surf Girl program, Elise needs to raise a minimum of $5,000 where every dollar will be returned back to the Mackay Surf Lifesaving Club. “The community support that has already been shown to me here in Mackay has been very encouraging. The Mackay Surf Lifesaving Club is volunteer-based with dedicated volunteers patrolling the beach on weekends. Don’t forget to always swim between the flags,” Elise said. You can support Elise’s Summer Surf Girl fundraising efforts by following her Facebook page, ‘Mackay Summer Surf Girl,’ to keep informed of events she will be attending. Events to keep an eye out for will be an Australia Day festival supported by the Mackay Regional Council, which will include a free barbecue, face painting, balloon artist and more. There will also be a trivia evening in February and a high tea in March. www.corelife.com.au 21

The only disability in life

is a bad attitude… ...and bad attitudes were the last thing on anyone’s mind when a lucky group of locals living with a disability had the chance to enjoy a complimentary Sea Plane flight over the beautiful Whitsundays.

Charlie said “It was really nice up there”, and his friend Jardi agreed. “Wow, that was fun, we went up really high!” Jardi also said that he enjoyed seeing the blue water and going with his friend Charlie.

Trent Brown, the Director of GSL Aviation, extended the kind gesture, and in doing so, created some wonderful memories. Charlie Bell is a regular face at GSL Aviation, volunteering his time a couple of hours a week at the Flametree airport, watering the gardens, cleaning, and - his greatest skill of all - providing customer service. From Charlie’s community interaction and work came the opportunity for him to enjoy this wonderful adventure with friends.

Endeavour Foundation’s Denise Minehan said she was always actively seeking out new learning and recreational experiences for people to be involved in, so organising the sea plane adventure was a delight.

Charlie chose to share the flight with Peter Robertshaw, Cody Brown, Jardi Bauer and Kath Dorman, who he met at Endeavour Foundation’s Learning and Lifestyle. All five passengers enjoyed the exhilaration of flying high above the reef and ocean. 22 www.corelife.com.au

As the NDIS rolls out in the Whitsundays, Endeavour Foundation is providing a range of services to support people of all ages with a disability, and to assist them to reach their life goals. The focus is on providing real possibilities for people with a disability: at home, at work, and in the community. JACK MOIR Testing out The Edge Fort that GJ Gardner installed

PSPG President Lisa Christofersen is Logan’s mum, so her level of commitment to the Playground runs deep. We caught up with Lisa for an update. “I spend a lot of time with my daughter and her friends at the Playground. As it progresses it is heart warming to see so many children enjoying the space. It’s hard not to think of Logan, but when I do, I think of how happy he would be to see his friends, now 13, still having a ball on the challenging equipment. Logan was full of adventure and I’ll never forget the sound of his almost constant laughter.” “This is clearly so much more than a project to me. Many hours are spent behind the scenes co ordinating picket sales; the general marketing and ensuring sponsors commitments are met. I would like to thank every business and individual who have supported LAP. This means both financial sponsors and sponsors in kind. Thank you to everyone who has purchased a picket, or, in some cases many, people who have helped out at BBQ,S and businesses that donated prizes for raffles and auctions.” “In 12 months our committee have generated $58,000 in income from picket sales, sponsorships, donations and public fund raising events. This does not include $40,000 which WRC have allocated which will be spent on The Double Hill Slides and Rope Parkour. We have been able to purchase the Fort and very soon the Giant Swing.” “More recently, Jono and Lisa Moir from GJ Gardner Homes installed The Edge Fort over a 3 day period on their own time with their team of trades. My committee is so grateful to them. To me this is the definition of community and charity.”

GRATITUDE TO THE COMMUNITY Over the past 12 months Logan’s Adventure Playground has seen the installation of 3 exciting new pieces. The Saturn Carousel, The 7.5m Rope Pyramid, and The Edge Fort are now proving to be a hit with hundreds of local and visiting children. Readers may be aware that this is a fun community project being built for children aged 5 to 15 years on land gifted by WRC. It’s being built in stages by volunteers, with all fundraising and project marketing by Play and Shine Project Group Inc. (PSPG)

A fantastic year at Logan’s Adventure Playground

The Playground was named in honour of local boy Logan Wells, aged 6, who passed away on December 11th, 2010 after a brave 11 month battle with an aggressive soft tissue cancer. His playful and adventurous spirit will never be forgotten. The Playground is also a celebration of the remarkable community spirit of local families, and the way in which this community came together to support Logan and his family in their time of unimaginable fear, then subsequent grief.

“Gratitude also to Plants Whitsunday, who have offered to supply native hedging plants, soil, mulch and labour to install a beautiful green hedge along one side of the space. This will have great aesthetic impact and help define the western boundary, also creating more shade in years to come.” “Another outstanding contribution came from The Reef Gateway Hotel Melbourne Cup lunch event. The “Karma Keg” and portion of ticket and picket sales from the day was $2600, Which was donated to LAP“ “A huge thank you must be extended to our existing Sponsors who teamed with us over the past 4 years. Doctor 2 You, George Christensen, Think Water Whitsunday, Whitsunday Christian College Whitsunday Family Practice. If you have been considering supporting LAP, please visit our website today. Every picket sale brings and very soon The Giant Nest Swing closer to being installed! Katya Bandow St Catherine’s Catholic College

STUDENT PROFILE

“Twenty years from now you will be more disappointed by the things you didn’t do than by the ones you did do. So throw off the bowlines. Sail away from the safe harbor. Catch the trade winds in your sails. Explore. Dream. Discover.” Mark Twain. These are the profound and inspiring words Katya Bandow will take with her from the year 2016. At age 16, Katya has just completed year 11, passed her OP subjects, balanced a part-time job, spent time with family and friends, and been an Air Force Cadet. To say life is busy would be an understatement. On top of all this she was determined to stay true to her personal journey of adventures and experiences. In August Katya managed to get a voyage on the STS Young Endeavour, where she spent two weeks on a tall ship sailing from Cairns to Gove, NT. For two weeks she had no contact with her friends and family back home, and was thrown into learning how to successfully sail a 44m vessel, set and furl sails, complete night watches and make friends with complete strangers. Of the 19 fellow youth crew Katya was the youngest, and had never sailed before. By the end of the two weeks, the staff crew handed

24 www.corelife.com.au

over the ship to the youth crew for 24 hours to sail without their assistance. Katya was elected Sailmaster by her peers and was put in charge of the sail set-up, organising watches and maintaining communication between the Captain and crew. This was a proud moment for Katya, who, needless to say, was sleep deprived, stressed and under a lot of pressure. At the end of the voyage Katya was awarded the Order of Australia Award to commend her exceptional efforts. This was a huge achievement. However, the life lessons and spirit of adventure she learnt from the journey is also something she will never forget. She returned home a different person. Katya had learnt teamwork and leadership, how to deal with failure and surprised herself with how well she could push through the tough times and just get on with everything. “One of the main things I learnt was, if you work hard, you can get through anything!”

TOP TIPS FOR MOTIVATING AND INSPIRING YOUR CHILDREN MODERN PARENTING CAN BE A CONFUSING MINEFIELD OF WHAT YOU SHOULD AND SHOULD NOT DO. ARE YOUR EXPECTATIONS TOO HIGH? ARE YOU BEING TOO SOFT? ARE YOU BEING TOO STRICT? PARENTING CAN FEEL LIKE ONE OF THE HARDEST JOBS IN THE WORLD SOMETIMES AND IT’S EASY TO WONDER HOW TO GET IT RIGHT. INSPIRING AND MOTIVATING YOUR CHILD IS IMPORTANT AT ANY AGE AND KEY TO DEVELOPING A NATURAL INDEPENDENCE THAT WILL MAKE THEM SHINE.

How to Inspire 1.

Lead by your own example. Children watch everything we do. If they see you striving for your dreams and reaching for your own goals they will be more likely to do the same. Rather than point them in the direction you think might be best, show them how to be your best.

2.

Encourage them to write a bucket list of things they would like to do. This makes them think outside of the box and believe they can achieve things in life that might feel impossible to them right now.

3.

Give them free time. This gives your child time for self-discovery, to find themselves and uncover their passions.

How to Motivate 1.

Encourage contribution rather than rewards when it comes to household chores. Engage with them and make tasks fun.

2.

Motivate them to follow their passions. Help them to discover what they are naturally good at, don’t push them into things you think they should do.

3.

Have meaningful conversations and appreciate the things they do. Be present and communicative in your child’s life, if they can see you noticing them, they will feel acknowledged and motivated about life.

“Happiness is not a destination, it’s a way of life.”

been a school principal for more than seven years, four being at St Catherine’s.

Instead of making a New Year’s resolution, David Burke would much rather live in the moment and enjoy each day.

“In addition to fulfilling my role description to the best of my ability, I teach, complete playground duties and I’m a hands-on person. St Catherine’s is an exciting place with more new initiatives to be put in place in 2017 that will enhance student academic achievement and challenge staff. One recipe for success,” David said.

As Principal (head of secondary) at Proserpine’s St Catherine’s Catholic College, his positivity and zest for life is felt by staff and students alike. Representing the Bishop of the Townsville Diocese, he shares the role of school principal with Sharyn Bell, who is the head of primary. “We share responsibility for the overall direction of the college but have individual responsibility for specific areas of the school based on our personal expertise and experience,” Sharyn said. Sharyn specialised in early years education at University, but began her career teaching at an all-girls secondary boarding college. She has experienced teaching every year level from prep to year 10. During her 22 years at St Catherine’s she has held many positions including classroom teacher, learning enrichment teacher, curriculum developer, assistant principal and principal. After taking long-service leave in 2016, Sharyn is excited to be returning as principal for 2017. David was told from a young age that he would be a great physical education teacher. He was selected in the U/15 Australian Rugby League Merit Team in 1983, his parents would joke that he only went to school to play sport. He has

Sharyn is just as passionate about the potential given to students at St Catherine’s. Teaching at St Cath’s is not a job for our staff but a vocation. Our teachers focus on each individual student to determine what they need to be successful. They work closely with parents to ensure students feel safe, valued and secure in order to reach their fullest academic potential. “I have spent 2016 completing my Master of Educational Leadership degree and visiting a number of high achieving schools in Queensland. I am keen and excited to return to St Cath’s with new ideas on how we can continue to offer the very best education to our students,” she said. Established as a small convent school by the Sisters of Mercy in 1925, St Catherine’s has grown to be a co-educational Catholic college for students from kindergarten to Year 12 in 2017. With the best interests of its students at heart, St Catherine’s Catholic College provides strength in faith and excellence in education.

GABI HARDING

The secret, in most cases, is simply simplicity, prepared with passion using the best ingredients. Peach and Pear Catering is celebrating its fourth year in business. Owner, Gabi Harding, wanted to offer simple, healthy and realistic food to the public, with an emphasis on taste, texture and colour. “I will only serve to the public what I would be proud to present to my friends. Food which is as enticing to the eyes as it is to the tastebuds, beautifully presented and bursting with flavour,” she said. Peach and Pear specialise in boutique catering options, from picnic hampers, gourmet platters and canapes to individual breakfast, lunch and dinners. From intimate weddings on the Whitsunday islands to a remote and romantic picnic for two or even a private dinner delivered to your resort, the possibilities are endless. Gabi and her team prepare, deliver and pick up from just about anywhere in the Whitsundays. Best of all, the options are affordable. “I don’t believe in over-charging just because the Whitsundays are an exclusive destination. I think it’s nice to allow people to sit back and enjoy an event or a party at their home without having to stress over the food preparation, without having to pay a fortune for the service,” Gabi said. Born in Uruguay, South America, Gabi immigrated to Adelaide with her family when she was 7 years old. She moved to Darwin shortly after the birth of her daughter, Kate, before making the best sea-change of her life to the Whitsundays 16 years ago, where she has made her home with husband, Mick. “My daughter Kate lives, works and studies in Townsville. She would like to be an events coordinator so perhaps one day we can collaborate. Becoming a mum has been, and will always be, my number one accomplishment. I wish I had had more children, but then if I had, perhaps Kate and I wouldn’t be as close as we are. Spending a week with her in a Tuscan villa was one of the greatest travel experiences I will forever treasure,” Gabi said. With an intense ardour for travel and being a British medieval history enthusiast, Gabi is planning a trip to the UK to explore more historical sites. Though, when she isn’t travelling or catering for the masses, she and Mick work on setting up their beef cattle farm on 195 acres in Eungella, where she hopes she will be able to supply her own beef from. Turn stressful into simple with simply delicious food. Peach and Pear catering will have your next event served up on a platter.

Fairytales can come true! Claire and Eddie Caruana have been the masterminds behind bringing thousands of visions to life. From opulent occasions to whimsical weddings, no gathering has been too big or small for the event management couple. But this year, the applause and accolades are coming their way, a celebration of 25 years in business. When small details culminate in a grand event, you can’t buy the depth of experience that comes with a consultation from Claire and Eddie. With a background in interior design, Claire launched her own wedding and event styling business in London. Demand was so high that within one year, Eddie was also working full time in the business. Lords, ladies and even Queen Elizabeth II herself has been in attendance at events styled by Claire and Eddie, whose corporate clients included Sony, British Airways and Vodafone.

A grand celebration THE EVENT COMPANY WHITSUNDAYS

THE EVENT COMPANY STYLE TIPS FOR 2017 The wedding trend for 2017 is looking to brighten up with some wonderful splashes of vibrant colour. Square edges are being tamed by gentle curves, circular arches and alternative shape altars are next year’s ceremony musts. Amazing one-off unstructured floral pieces for a focal point on reception tables complimented with smaller intricate florals and candles surrounding them are creating the wow factor. Mismatched timber styling within furniture and centre pieces mixed with lux foliage garlands is still strong for 2017. Contemporary monochrome black and white with designer patterns is making a comeback, and of course, coastal chic always remains a must for your waterfront Whitsunday wedding.

After 15 high-paced years, Claire and Eddie moved their successful business to their dream destination, the Whitsundays. The Event Company Whitsundays has grown from strength to strength over the past 10 years, so much so that the business had to be moved to Shute Harbour Road, two years ago, to allow for extra display room. The business has recently expanded again to allow for a greater range of stock, moving with industry trends and keeping up with diverse styling ranges. In 2017, the Event Company Whitsundays will be launching exciting new products to add even more of a wow-factor to special occasions. But while its celebration and styling range is impressive, Claire believes their success comes from the level of personalised service they give. “We offer a personalised consultation, free of charge, for any event. We have so much passion for what we do, and experience to offer, that we enjoy taking the time to walk our clients through a full design consultation. We can do this over the phone or by appointment here in the Whitsundays. We can completely take the hassle out of the decorating by styling the venue from start to finish, or we can supply the items for a couple who wish to DIY their own styling. When your dream meets our creative expertise, anything is possible,” she said. When average is not an option, the Event Company Whitsundays have the experience and creativity to ensure your individuality is showcased on your special day.

Nolwenn Foligne LURE, ABELL POINT MARINA

Transitioning from “bonjour” to “gidday” will take Nolwenn Foligne a few more years to get used to, but what took her no time at all was developing a love of life in the tropics and sailing in the Whitsundays. Luckily for Nolwenn, her position as the Function Centre Manager at Lure, Abell Point Marina, means she is based at one of the best sailing ports in the world. Nolwenn’s unique name descends from ancestry in Brittany, but she was born in Normandy, France. Her father moved frequently for his career, so Nolwenn (Nolly) experienced living in many regions of France as well as Lebanon and French Guyana. She spent her High School years in a town in the southwest of France, Figeac, a country hinterland town popular for foie gras, goat cheese and singular wines. She moved to Toulouse to study at University before partaking in a European exchange programme to spend a year in London. She then completed her master’s degree in Paris and began her career in the event industry, organising incentive trips for corporate clients in France and overseas. Nolly volunteered for a two week mission to Madagascar with a French nongovernmental organisation (NGO) which is a nonprofit humanitarian organisation. “Poverty is a curse there but people are extremely welcoming and generous. I was helping young workers in a tourist office and it was an amazing experience. I was giving my time but it was nothing compared to what I received in return.” A self-confessed travel addict, Nolly craved new challenges and an adventure after spending seven years living in the city of love. With no expectations, she flew to Australia and was drawn to Queensland’s sunny coastline and the wonders of the Great Barrier Reef. Her position at Lure both takes advantage of her event expertise while quenching her thirst for adventure.

“Last June, Lure hosted its first wedding for a fabulous local couple, Ali and Ryan. It will always hold a special place in our hearts being the first. Since then, Lure has really transformed the beautiful Abell Point Marina into a bustling hub of entertainment. Our great food and wine event held in partnership with Kevin Collins, his D’Vine team and other personalities was an unforgettable sold-out event. “And the ever-changing vista of the water just makes every day more special,” Nolly said. When she isn’t running around after clients, Nolly likes to lace up her runners and hit the local running tracks. “Running is a hobby I enjoy, even if summer gives me a hard time. I’m far more active in winter. I took part in the Great Whitehaven Beach Run two years running and I hope to join it again in 2017,” she said. Discover the allure of the in-demand Whitsunday’s waterfront event venue for yourself.

Two of the smallest words in the English language, yet two of the most significant and powerful when said together. They mean that you have found your soulmate. The one person on this Earth, above all others, that you want to spend the rest of your life with. The one who brings joy to your heart, a smile to your face and tears to your eyes when you’re apart. “To love is nothing. To be loved is something. To love and be loved, is everything. ”A celebration of this love is often the grandest occasion of our lives. An elegant elopement, a backyard barbecue or an opulent extravaganza, we all differ in the way we wish to express our love with those nearest and dearest to us. It all starts with a proposal, but once the ring is on your finger, what’s next? It’s time to delve into your dreams. A discussion with your fiancée where you discover each other’s wish-lists and must-haves. Based on the type of wedding you would both like, the sensible next move is to discuss a timeline which suits both your theme and budget.

But don’t discount some of your fairytale fantasies just yet. Often your dream wedding can be more affordable than you realise. It just takes research, planning and guidance from industry experts. Core Life Magazine’s annual wedding feature is full of practical and inspirational wedding advice and information on wedding professionals throughout Mackay and the Whitsundays. From choosing the perfect venue to arranging the cake and catering, to decadent decorating themes and designer wedding dresses, we hope you enjoy planning the wedding of your dreams with inspiration from our local wedding industry professionals.

Here’s a toast to you, your love and the happiest day of your lives.

Tips

WHEN CHOOSING YOUR WEDDING GOWN 5. SIZING/COLOUR

Forest, farm, beach, church, island, home, garden, or chapel. Your choice of gown should be as comfortable and sensible as possible for your chosen location

2. WEATHER/DATE OF WEDDING Here in the tropics we should avoid planning a wedding in the extreme heat and during the wet season. So your gown needs to be suitable for our climate as it is warm most months.

Brides should have professional assistance to choose their gown for their size, as there is a gown in store that suits all sizes. Colour also is important. Choose the tone that best suits your skin colour or consider a spray tan.

SO WHAT IS TRENDING? Lace, lace, and more lace.

3. THEME

In overall, lace patterns or lace bodices, with soft flowing tulle skirts.

Many brides over the years have chosen a particular theme. For example, medieval, nautical, farm/hay barn, ballroom/chandelier and fairytale. So the gown is chosen to suit the theme

Two tone gowns are trending now, with ivory being the most popular colour: ie ivory over peony and ivory over almond.

4. COST These days, cost is a major factor, as our economy is so low most brides are working on a budget.

[t] 07 4952 3770

[w] www.starcutflowers.com.au

New styles are designed with high necklines and soft sleeves.

Most brides still choose a floor-length gown with a small train and a few choose tea-length gowns, for garden party weddings. For more information contact Jocelyn from Jill Burston for Brides 07 4951 2747

TEEPEEVENTS

A magical ambiance

Where does the Giant Hat Teepee come from and what is so special about its design? It’s actually a really cool story. A keen hiker in Sweden decided he wanted to design and build the ultimate tent to cope with the extreme conditions. The indigenous people of Sweden, the Sami Tribe, had survived in their teepees for centuries so he thought this was a good place to start. He used their traditional designs with modern materials and techniques and came up with the first adventure teepee. The Sami people were so impressed with what he had done they asked for him to make a giant teepee that they could lift the sides so people could easily walk through and see all the wares they had to sell. And so the Giant Hat Teepee was born. Why does the Giant Hat Teepee make such a unique wedding venue? The Giant Hat Teepee is much more than shelter from the sun and rain; it creates a truly magical feel from the moment it is installed. There is just something about it, when people first see it they are in awe and that really sets the ambiance for the whole event. Where can you put a marquee?

What sort of wedding does the Giant Hat Teepee suit best? The immediate style people think of is Boho, Country or Vintage but it really does suit any style. I have seen everything from industrial to an elegant black tie event, the tepee can make any event shine. We also have amazing furniture packages, plus we can arrange kids zones and lighting, just get in touch we will do whatever we can to help make your wedding dreams a reality. Happy planning! To contact Teepeevents, teepeevents@gmail.com or phone 0481 396098.

THE CELEBRANT OF LOVE Twenty-five years ago I was invited to my first civil wedding ceremony in the Whitsundays overlooking the Coral Sea. The guests gathered casually around the bride and groom and I was charmed by the elegant simplicity, sincerity and romance of the occasion. After the wedding I said to husband, I’m going to marry people!” and I knew then, this is exactly what I wanted to do with my life. Every couple is unique but with one thing in common: they want their wedding day to celebrate the best day of their lives so far, and create glorious memories. A Whitsunday wedding is possibly one of the most romantic in the world. Travelling to an island destination, flying over it to Whitehaven Beach or on the mainland where the vibrant blue waters are always part of the backdrop. Love is love &

Jade Hagan

Natalie Simpson

IN A WORLD WHERE WE TEACH OUR CHILDREN TO REMOVE DISCRIMINATION FROM THEIR HEARTS, ISN’T IT TIME TO REMOVE IT FROM OUR NATION’S LAWS? Surrounded by their nearest and dearest on Hayman Island, Jade Hagan and Natalie Simpson held each other’s hands and made a commitment to love and cherish one another from now until forever. In their eyes, and the eyes of everyone who matters to them, they are married. But under current legislation, the Australian Government will not recognise same-sex marriage, denying couples like Jade and Natalie a marriage recognised by law. Jade and Natalie met while working together in a childcare centre. They quickly became friends and Jade recalls developing a crush on Natalie early on. They parted ways and Jade finished a nursing degree in 2013 and now works as a registered nurse in a busy Queensland Health hospital. They got in touch with each other in 2015 and knew right away that something special was developing between them. “We quickly fell in love in a way that neither of us had before. We knew we had something special. Our love and relationship is something we treasure,” Jade said. With seemingly little progress in the Australian Government on the topic of marriage equality, Natalie and Jade decided to not waste precious time in making their love for one another official. “To us, it’s not about whether the government will recognise us as a legal married couple, we wanted our day to be about our love and sharing what we mean to

each other with our closest family and friends. We didn’t want to wait for the approval of the government to make it legal, because what we feel for each other wouldn’t change as a result of a change in the law,” Natalie said. Jade and Natalie’s celebrant, Kylie McIntosh, explains the legalities how it stands today for a same-sex couple wishing to marry. “Australian law specifies that marriage is between a man and a woman. This means that same-sex couples cannot marry under Australian law. Authorised celebrants may conduct a ceremony, such as a commitment ceremony, to publicly celebrate a same-sex relationship. However, this must not purport to be a marriage, therefore there are certain words that cannot be used during the ceremony. “To quote Jade however, ‘In our minds this is a true wedding, regardless of the eyes of the law.’ Kylie said “I believe the words of former Victorian Premier, Jeff Kennett, summarises it best; “What right do I have to deny another law-abiding Australian the same happiness, the same opportunities I have enjoyed all my life?” Jade and Natalie agree, believing that their public expression of love and commitments makes their ceremony as everlasting as any marriage. “We actually never called our day a ‘commitment ceremony’ but we always called it a marriage because to us it was and it is every day since then. Our ceremony to me was simply perfect. Natalie has two beautiful children, Savanah and Kyeson, so I shared my vows and commitment to them both also. It was everything I had imagined. We shared tears and laughter with our closest family and friends and you could feel the love surrounding us all. “It was the best day of my life,” Jade said. Marriage matters. In a world which needs more love in it, ask yourself, why is same-sex marriage still an issue?

How to Choose the Perfect Wedding Decor 1. Choose a style that suits your personality and taste.

decorator you feel comfortable working with and can work with you to your desired style, taste and budget.

2. Also consider the venue or location for decor choice. A beach theme goes well with a seaside venue where as flowers and vintage styles go well with marquee weddings or country locations. Elegant styles work well with modern main stream venues and function rooms.

Trending for 2017 is a lean towards naturals. Lush foliage, lots of greenery with soft floral colours of whites, ivory, creams, peaches, and pinks. Raw wooden pieces and rustic timber pieces are also a growing trend to compliment decor and decor pieces with lots of florals. Simple vases and jars also add finer details. Outdoor garden style marquee and teepee events with Festoon lighting are also becoming more popular as they provide a private relaxed atmosphere.

3. Select main feature colours that compliment your main colour choice such as those of your Bridesmaids dresses. These are decor items such as table runners and chair sashes.

For Elopements, Whitehaven Beach weddings will continue to be popular in the Whitsundays. Divine Decor have Divine Wedding packages available for those wishing to Elope to this beautiful region.

4. For the finer decor details choose colours and floral options that complement those of your Bouquet Choice. Wedding stylists and decorators offer different styles and services. Choose a

Ways to create the

Best Wedding Film

THESE 6 TIPS WILL PUT YOUR MIND AT EASE AND HELP US CREATE A GORGEOUS WEDDING FILM FOR YOU TO LOOK BACK ON FOR YEARS TO COME – WITHOUT FEAR OR REGRET!

HAVE AN ‘UNPLUGGED CEREMONY’

We are there to capture every moment. By asking your guests not to take photos or film on the day by way of an ‘unplugged ceremony’, allows you to be in control of what gets published on social media and people are truly ‘present’ at your ceremony.

2.

MEET WITH US BEFOREHAND (IF YOU CAN!)

We want you to feel comfortable with us around. We aren’t there to have a camera in your face all day, we want to capture the natural, candid beauty of your day. Half an hour for coffee to calm your nerves in the few days leading up to your wedding with us will give you the opportunity to talk, ask questions and get to know us (and we can get to know you!) to create a perfectly personalized film for you to treasure for years to come.

3.

TAKE TIME TO WRITE YOUR VOWS AND SPEECHES, AND HAVE A PRACTICE.

The most moving and romantic films are based on the beautiful words you both spend time putting together for one another. Your words, voice, emotions, and love will be portrayed in your film and rather than just reminiscing on your special day, you will be able to re-live it. On the day, look at each other when you speak, use a clear voice and show your emotion and love, to be able to feel it all over again when you watch your film.

4

LET US KNOW WHO YOUR PHOTOGRAPHER IS.

We want your day to run seamlessly. Photography and videography go hand-in-hand in capturing your special day. We like to touch base with your photographer before the day to introduce ourselves (if we haven’t already!) and work out a ‘game-plan’ for location shoots, their must-have shots (and ours!) and ‘iron out any creases’ before the big day for us to work together.

5

USE LICENSED AND INSURED OPERATORS AND SUPPLIERS

We are fully licensed by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority of Australia to operate drones commercially and we hold full public liability insurance for the drones and our services. Choosing reputable operators and suppliers will ensure no hiccups (or avoidable accidents) on the day!

6

SECRETS AND SURPRISES!

Is the Groom planning fireworks? Are your parents planning a Dove release? Do your bridesmaids have a musical number after their speech? We’d love to know about it, to make sure we capture it, and your reactions! Be rest assured though, your secret is safe with us.

Love knows no bounds “How bloody marvelous!” Lyn Walsh laughed and had a smile from ear-to-ear as she reflected on how she met her soulmate, Steve Taylor, through popular dating website, eHarmony. The Emerald-based couple were married last month, proving it’s never too late to fall head-over-heels in love. “After being on my own for 10 years, meeting Steve was like a bolt out of the blue. I received a message from him the very day I uploaded my profile to eHarmony, he had noticed we had a 100% compatibility rating which is quite rare. “We met soon after, and, as they say, the rest is history. We were kindred spirits on so many levels. I had waited a long time for a man like Steve to come into my life, and now we are married. How bloody marvelous!” Both Lyn and Steve had been married previously, and it was Steve’s daughter, Suzie, who convinced him that he had been a bachelor for long enough. “Some say truth is sometimes stranger than fiction and this happened with Lyn and I. A score of more than 65% on eHarmony is considered

acceptable, yet from more than 300 questions answered, Lyn and I scored 100% in compatibility. I knew she was ‘the one’ almost immediately. We share a remarkable amount in common. “As the relationship progressed, I woke with this absolute goddess beside me and, at a very young 73 years of age, I realised I didn’t want to spend any more of my life without Lyn in it. What more can I say, apart from the fact my love is perfect,” Steve said. Lyn said, “Being given a second chance in love and life is wonderful to say the least. I am from Brisbane but now making a new life with Steve in Emerald. We are excited and looking forward to our future together.”

wedding beautiful ready body wedding hair! GET YOUR

5 WAYS TO

WITH I-LIPO!

WHAT IS I-LIPO? The i-Lipo system emits low levels of laser energy which disrupts the fat cell membranes releasing intra-cellular fat. This causes the cell to lose its round shape by changing the permeability of the cell membrane. This does not affect the neighbouring structures such as skin, blood vessels and peripheral nerves.

1. Be prepared. Do research of the weather where your wedding is being held.

Triglycerides spill out from the broken cell membrane and are released into the interstitial space where they are slowly transported through the body’s natural metabolic functions and are used by the body as an energy source. Light exercise post treatment can accelerate the breakdown and removal of fat from the area.

Also, shampoo your hair the night before your wedding so it isn’t too soft on the day.

WHAT AREAS WILL IT TREAT? Thighs, buttocks, stomach, calfs, knees, arms, “lovehandles”, hips and the chin. WHO IS I-LIPO SUITABLE FOR? It works equally well for men and women. There are a few medical conditions that would prevent treatment. A full medical questionnaire will be completed by your i-lipo therapist at the first consultation. Best results are achieved by healthy adults who wish to spot reduce particular problem areas. HOW MANY TREATMENTS ARE REQUIRED? For maximum results a course of 8 treatments is recommended per body area, twice per week.

FOR MORE INFORMATION OR TO MAKE AN APPOINTMENT CALL THE TEAM AT ALLURE LASER AND SKIN STUDIO, 1300 112 311 66 www.corelife.com.au

Find photos of styles to suit the weather & bring along to your stylist as inspiration & some guidance of what you like

2. Plan ahead. It’s best to do a trial beforehand. That way you are 100% of your style on the day. 3. Bring your accessories to the trial & discuss with your stylist where you’ll place the piece or veil. 4. Do not cut your hair right before your wedding. Sometimes, mistakes happen & months of growth go in one cut. Also, it’s easier to style without freshly cut ends. 5. Wear a button-front shirt or dress to easily remove after your hair and make up. That way there’s no pulling of clothing over your fresh hair-do.

You could be just one treatment away from bright and even skin tone on your wedding day...

Like all brides-to-be having good skin on your day is highly warranted. I have always been cautious of my skin but never knew what my skin needed or how to maintain it. After seeing Sarah for an IPL treatment and discussing my skin, she recommended a skin care program tailored to my skin and my budget. With my wedding fast approaching I decided to go ahead with the program. The program consisted of a peel as well as pre and post skin care.

GET YOU

THE START

WEDDING FIT FOR HIM So your big day is approaching, and no doubt your Bride to be has already been training, dieting & obsessing to fit that dress perfectly on the big day. You want to look your best too, but being a typical guy, you’ve left your run to the last minute…

GOOD NEWS! This is the one time in your marriage that being a guy will actually be an advantage! All that testosterone & extra muscle mass makes losing fat & toning up a lot easier, as long as you follow some simple rules, and some exercise tips:

NEED... 3 x 30 minute sessions for $99

Plus (optional) free Bodymetrix Body Compostion measurement (normally $40).

Best part? YOU DONT HAVE TO BE

A MEMBER OF AIRLIE FITNESS TO ENJOY PERSONAL TRAINING.

DO STRENGTH TRAINING

DO SOME INTENSE CARDIO

Start with full body training 3 x per week - its the number one way to melt fat, and you dont have to be aerobically fit to do it.

Dont waste time spending hours walking or doing cardio at a low intensity - train harder for less time for a better result! Just 15 minutes of High Intensity Interval Training is better than an hour of “lame duck” cardio. Interval training releases fat melting hormones and gets you fitter faster. HIIT or Spin classes are a great example.

If you are a beginner you can do it all in machines at any good fitness centre - legs, chest and back. Simples.

GET OFF THE GROG • ALCOHOL KILLS YOUR RESULT IN 4 WAYS: 1: It converts to rocket fuel in your bloodstream, which your body will burn off ahead of all other forms of energy including carbs and fat.

Cannonvale 49483373

2: While you have rocket fuel in your blood, EVERY calorie you eat or drink WILL get stored as fat. How’s that kebab looking now.. And anyone want coke with their rum?

Jubilee Pocket 49465875

3: Alcohol in men RAISES your estrogen levels and LOWERS testosterone. This is bad in too many ways to list, but estrogen facilitates fat storage on your belly. This is why big drinkers will often be skinny everywhere else and still carry belly fat.

Proserpine 49451304

4: Alcohol is a liver toxin. While your liver is flat out trying to remove it from your system, it simply will not break down fat for energy. So NO fat loss will result from your training. MODEL Jane

The philosophy of Hairway is to develop the ultimate service salon, combining it with commercial creative hair fashion. “It is all about making people feel special”.

AFTER

BEFORE

Shane Gibbs owner of Hairway has 30 years of experience in the hair and beauty industry. Hairway is always geared to the future and focused on providing cutting edge styles as well as the ensuring you get the best look you want in a creative way.

Our beautiful make-over model is Jane. As you can see from Jane’s before shot, her hair is extremely fine. When fine hair is worn so long it often looks fragile, broken and stringy. The length also pulls it down making it very flat. It was also very dark on the ends and lighter in the root area – this makes it appear even thinner. Time for a major change. Lucky for Jane, Shane specialises in problematic hair, including very fine hair. Jane wanted her hair to be modern, pretty, bouncy and most of all thick looking. 72 www.corelife.com.au

1st Look 1. The Colour The first thing was to gently cleanse the dark colour off the ends to give us a fresh base to start with. We then foiled with blonde, copper and chocolate. In between the foils we smudged the

regrowth out using chocolate with a little purple added. We also free hand painted the ends to add extra lightness. This was a MAJOR colour job and took around 6 hours. The result is incredible. It made Jane’s hair look so thick and modern. 2. The Cut To give Jane’s hair a very thick look, Shane created a precision cut to collar bone length. Fine hair needs to be cut perfectly or it will look choppy and uneven. Shane then carefully added long layers and shaped around Jane’s face. The difference this created is mind blowing and it made Jane’s hair expand out to an amazing thickness. 3. The Finish With Jane’s hair we decided to do two looks. The first look is a great day look, very pretty and soft. Shane used NIOXIN Styling products that are specially designed for fine and thinning hair. NIOXIN Styling products have a 3D system that looks after the scalp, thickens hair strands and increases diameter. Shane used a conical wand to create beachy waves and lightly combed it out, WOW!! Thick, pretty and bouncy hair that just looks amazing!

In the 8 years I’ve been coming to Hairway, I have never had a bad cut or colour. Shane is willing to let me experiment with cut & colour, so every 6 weeks I have a new, edgy look that I love. All the staff are friendly & really know what they are doing. I can’t praise this salon enough.

Jackie

All the staff make an effort to know your name, great smile when your in the salon. Sometimes my requests are complex but they somehow make it work. I have full faith in the team & I trust that I’m not going to leave the Salon with a look not Happy with or that the Stylist isn’t happy with. This is genuinely one of my favourite places to spend a few hours.

Jody

I have been coming to Hairway for over 10 years. Now I live 10 hours away, and I still come back several times a year. Super personalised service. Go above and beyond to provide clients with all the info to create a unique style & colour. I cannot recommend Hairway highly enough.

For the second look Shane smoothed and polished Jane’s hair to create an elegant evening style, an amazing modern result that still looks very thick.

Hydration Hydration Hydration Most hydration cures are related to the fact that water is the primary transport system in our bodies. It carries nutrients and oxygen into the cells and waste products out. When hydration is not at an optimal level, blood turns acidic, so it thickens and becomes more condensed. As it does so, circulation decreases, there is poor oxygenation of tissue, and inefficient removal of CO2 and toxins. All this creates a low grade state of metabolic acidosis. Remember, when we’re too acidic, our bodies become dis-eased. •

Water makes the skin smoother

•

Water helps reduce fatique

•

Water makes the immune system function more efficiently

•

Water helps with weight management

•

Water is the main lubricant in the joint spaces and helps prevent arthritis.

•

Water rids the body of toxins

It is critical to hydrate yourself. Two to three litres are needed per day, depending on the weather, your size, activity level and diet. If you are drinking enough, you should not feel thirsty. Sometimes we mistake hunger for thirst. So have a glass or two of water if you feel hungry and it’s not meal time. Colon hydrotherapy is an excellent way to hydrate every cell in your body, and then draw out toxins and remove them from cells everywhere in your body, not just your colon.

What is NUTRITION COACHING? It has become very apparent to many that taking care of your own health and your family’s has become the only option towards preventing diseases rather than waiting for the inevitable list of symptoms to accumulate. In the last century our lifestyles have changed so drastically that biochemical deficiencies of our brain or gut have played a major role in our poor health and poor mental processes. Dr Karen Popovich was always fascinated by nutrition since graduating as an osteopath and recently completed her Nutrition counselling certificate. If you have ever noticed your child behaving badly after a few coloured lollies, and junk food, you already know that your child can also greatly benefit from a properly balanced, nutritious, gut and brain diet. The earlier you change your diet and introduce your children to healthy nutritious food, the earlier your child will learn to like different tastes and textures, want to help with cooking and improve their school reports at the same time! Like personal training, visiting a nutritional coach is best if done on a regular basis, It is strongly advised to keep in touch at least once a month to keep the momentum going and address any issues that need coaching before you fall back into old patterns.(Skype sessions can be arranged if you do not live near our two clinics). AM I A GOOD CANDIDATE FOR NUTRITION COACHING? If you genuinely want to be healthy and are not attached to your illness for financial or emotional secondary gains. If you are prepared to take a few supplements, learn new habits, buy different foods and cook, then its a resounding YES, you are a good candidate! Dr Karen Prince-Popovich D.O. You get what you pay for with hearing tests! Advertising for “Free Hearing Tests” is very common these days so it is important to understand the different types of basic hearing tests commonly used. Most “free” hearing tests are what’s called screening tests. These are a basic pass or fail tests designed to find out if you suffer from hearing loss. These kinds of tests are also available as free downloads from app stores or online. It requires little or no skill to administer, which is why they are free. In these screening tests four different beep tones are presented at a level considered to be within normal limits and if you hear it you pass. These tests can be extremely inaccurate and many people with normal hearing end up failing them. The screening can also be affected by ambient noise, incorrect administration, equipment issues, and finally (and unfortunately) results being skewed by administrators due to commissions being paid for failed screenings.

The next step after a hearing screen is to get a basic hearing assessment to see if there is indeed a hearing loss, how severe it might be and what area of the hearing system the problem may stem from. Because this is a significantly more time-consuming test and relies on the skillset of clinician there is usually a charge. This can be upfront or is commonly built into the price of hearing aids. This second assessment finds the point where you just start hearing different pitched beeps through a set of headphones. By measuring this we test how sound is being detected through the outer ear, middle ear and inner ear. This is known as air conduction. We then find these points again with a special set of headphones called a bone conductor. The bone conductor directs the beeps to the inner ear without going through the outer and middle ear. If we get the same results with bone and air conduction we know the middle ear and outer ear are letting all the sound

through to the inner ear. So if there is a hearing loss it’s in the inner ear. If there is difference between the bone and the air conduction results then we know the middle or outer ear is the source of the hearing problem. The information obtained in conjunction with other assessments is then used for either two purposes, to find out where and what the problem is, and to assist with treatment with hearing aids and/or implantable technology. If the information is for diagnostic reasons it is only the first step to help ascertain if any other areas of the ear or auditory/balance system are affected as on its own it does not tell us what could be causing the problem and does not assist with formulating treatment options. Most importantly this test does not measure the difficulties you are experiencing with communication or the impairment the hearing loss may be giving.

GRANT COLLINS Principal Audiologist/Owner Clarity Hearing Solutions

A rehabilitation assessment focuses on assessing not just the hearing but also the impairment and communication difficulties you may be facing. It does use some of the same assessments as a diagnostic assessment, but also includes a lot of tests that measure other things important to communication such as auditory processing and cognition, to name but a few. It is the combination of these latter tests that ensure you get the right treatment for your hearing problems. Those “free” hearing tests are mostly just to get you through the door.

How did John save $11,850 on hearing aids? By spending $150 on a second opinion! John came to Clarity for a second opinion after having a free hearing test with another provider. The provider had told John he needed hearing aids and had quoted him $12,000 for the aids.

All walks of life, aside from tourists craving relaxation my local clients are mainly professionals that work in trades, or on their feet and are wanting to ease pain and keep themselves in top performance for work. What keeps you busy when not working? Raising my two energetic sons Jett and Blade, meditation and self mastery. What is your new years resolution? This coming year is going to be huge for my business. I’ve worked hard to get to where I am, so my resolution is to stay focused on the bigger picture, to secure investors for the next stage of growth and to have fun building a conscious community of like minded people. Achieving a healthy glow, without exposing your body to the risks of skin cancer, makes spray tanning the sensible choice for summer. Local business, Mackay Mobile Tanning, has been delivering the convenience of at-home tanning for more than eight years. Owner, Linda Horton, explains why she decided to make her tanning and nail services mobile. “There are many advantages of getting your tanning and nails done in the privacy of your own home. The biggest one is that there is no risk of smudging your new tan by having to drive home after your appointment, you’re already home! Young mums (and dads) don’t need to worry about the stress of finding a baby sitter, some get a group together and make a day out of getting pampered while their children play together at home. Elderly clients also enjoy the convenience of a manicure or pedicure at home, or at an aged care facility or hospital, without the need to drive anywhere,” she said. Linda has had 14 years of experience with nails and 8 in tanning and travels from Mackay to Sarina, Marian, Shoal Point and everywhere inbetween. “Clients are also welcome to travel to me if they prefer, and yes, men do get tans, manicures and pedicures also, so don’t be shy guys!”

His appointment came at a tumultuous time for the Mackay Regional Council, and as Craig Doyle explains, he hit the ground running and hasn’t looked back. It has been nearly 12 months since he grabbed the reins, and during this time, Craig has been at the forefront of exciting regional projects; including the newly opened $8.5M library in the Mackay CBD, the approval of a $20M super sports precinct plus the formation of a new regional economic body called the Greater Whitsunday Alliance (GW3). “There are many exciting developments lined up for the Mackay region in 2017, but it is really exciting to sign off on a $10M funding agreement with the federal government for a new sports precinct here in Mackay. The Mackay Regional Council will match the federal government’s $10M. The sports precinct will feature an international-standard swimming pool, state-of-the-art athletics track and other community facilities. The project will commence in early 2017 and be completed near the end of 2018,” Craig said.

What preparation is required to achieve a great tan result? Wax or shave the day prior and exfoliate your body. You must not wear any lotions, potions or perfumes as this can interfere with the application. What is your New Year’s resolution? To try and be healthier, although that will be challenging initially as I’m heading on a cruise on the new Ovation of the Seas in January.

Does your family have an unusual Christmas tradition? “My side of the family traditionally gets together on Christmas Eve so that Christmas Day isn’t as chaotic.” What is your New Year’s Resolution for 2017? To establish a better work/life balance, to spend more time with my family. What is an unusual situation you have faced? “An unnerving situation was accepting a ride from an unmarked taxi in Jeddah in the Middle East. It was the day after the United States bombed Afghanistan and the taxi driver stopped the vehicle in the middle of nowhere and demanded money.” “Earlier this year I jumped out of a plane for charity. At 12,000 feet sitting on the edge I began to think that what I had agreed to wasn’t my smartest decision, but it was a great experience.” www.corelife.com.au 77

CHINESE NEW YEAR SATURDAY 28TH JANUARY Chinese New Year is typically celebrated with a cacophony of fireworks and firecrackers. Parents also give lucky red envelopes containing money to their children, with notes wishing them health, growth and good studies for the coming year. 12 days before the New Year, the Chinese will carry out a thorough cleaning of their houses. The cleaning is called “sweeping the dust”, and represents a wish to put away old things, bid farewell to the old year, and welcome the New Year. Although some people decorate their houses several days before the festival, most people do it on New Year’s Eve. Houses are decorated with red lanterns, red couplets, New Year paintings, and red lanterns. 2017 is a year of the Rooster, so rooster images will appear on decorations.
