Skills. Get a few Operator type tickets or skills. There are plenty of organisations offering training, licences and tickets, some even have simulators where you can learn without being on-site.

Health. You’ve got to be drug free, healthy and ready to go.

Set up by Mackay based mining services company Mastermyne, Myne Start is an award-winning facility offering specialised underground training in situations that have been set up to replicate underground working conditions.

Known as ‘cleanskins’, inexperienced underground miners need to have, and be able to demonstrate, a certain level of knowledge before they can be considered for a position at a mine site.

The four week Myne Start program is an all-encompassing mine readiness teaching course for cleanskins which covers topics like hazard identification and risk management, applying first aid, underground slinging and lifting, working at heights as well as Standard 11 surface and underground coal inductions.

I worked on cruise ships from age 18, sailing to A places like the Caribbean, Hawaii, Europe,
