MAR/APR

Hi Everyone, Welcome to the issue of Core Life that celebrates women! I always remember, when I was in my early twenties, complaining to my dad that I couldn’t find a boyfriend. Upon hearing this he suggested that men might find me intimidating! His words shocked me and, although he probably meant well, it stayed with me for a long time. Possibly even until now. My interpretation of the statement was that my personality was ‘too much’ and that boys would prefer someone more placid, meek even. Back then, this idea infuriated me, so I puffed out my chest and continued living more brazen and more outspoken than I had before. There was, however, a nagging feeling that perhaps I was too strongminded and independent. Perhaps I needed to dilute myself. I think, as females, we need to be careful here. When you dilute yourself it is easy to start playing a role. The role of someone that always says yes and always needs to be liked. It takes real courage to be yourself, no matter what. In this female empowering Women in Business issue we celebrate the inspiring stories of 64 local business women who are not afraid to be themselves. They are people who thrive on being bold and brazen. They are also people who have supportive husbands, families and friendship networks that not only give them permission to be strongminded, but encourage the tenacious spirit within them. For the record, my own father applauds my strong-minded, passionate nature and admires my ambitious drive as a woman. What he said, all those years ago, was how I chose to interpret his words and more a reflection of how I was feeling about myself back then. While I have definitely calmed down a lot since my twenties, my strength and charisma remains. I haven’t diluted myself, I simply mellowed with age! As we raise a glass to the women in our world let’s all remember to stay true to who we are and surround ourselves with people who support our fierce spirit.

CHECK YOUR

BREASTS! HOW BEC WOODS

BEAT CANCER It was pure luck that Bec found a lump in her breast one evening while she was having a shower. She’d never done it before, but something prompted her to do a selfexamination. This decision probably saved her life. Three weeks later, when she could still feel the lump, Bec knew she had to get it checked-out. The rest is a whirlwind of tests, starting with a mammogram then onto an ultrasound and finally a biopsy in matter of three hours. By the speed of the process, Bec knew the prognosis couldn’t be good and when the doctor finally confirmed she had cancer, Bec was in complete shock. She was only 38! “There is no history of breast cancer in my family and I’m also young. I thought I was fit and healthy; going to the gym, lifting weights and eating well. “I remember thinking to myself when the Doctor told me, “but I bench-pressed 60 kg three days ago, how can I have cancer?” I never felt sick, had no pain, just two lumps sitting there silently. It was surreal,” said Bec. Four weeks after diagnosis Bec went onto the operating table for a bilateral mastectomy and two weeks after that began an intensive round of chemotherapy. Due to her age, health and fitness level the doctors believed her body could cope with higher dosages in a shorter time frame. “That’s when the worst part kicked in. Where I wasn’t sick with the cancer, I was made so unwell with the chemo. I have never felt exhaustion like it. Your brain says, “hey, let’s go for a walk” but your body has other ideas. Simple tasks like shopping, running errands and going to the kid’s sports became so hard

to manage because I didn’t have the energy,” said Bec. Fortunately, Bec’s loving husband supported her throughout the experience, giving her the strength she needed to win the fight. They tried to keep everything as normal as possible for their two young boys, although Bec confesses, the kids grew-up a lot last year. With her husband working casually, money worries began to creep in as he was only paid when he worked. As the Executive Officer of Whitsunday Neighbourhood Centre, Bec, is usually helping the community in many ways through the various initiatives and projects she leads. Now, however, it was her turn to let her team help her.

SIGNS TO LOOK OUT FOR:

She was able to work from home whenever she was going through treatment and her team rallied around to ensure she could remain employed.

• Nipple retraction (turning inward)

“I couldn’t have done it without them all,” she said.

• Swelling of all or part of a breast (even if no distinct lump is felt) • Skin irritation or dimpling (sometimes looking like an orange peel) • Breast or nipple pain

• Redness, scaliness, or thickening of the nipple or breast skin

Bec was diagnosed with cancer in May 2018 and by the end of the same year she was given the all clear. This intense rollercoaster ride was over and the recovery could begin.

In general, cancerous lumps tend to be more irregular in shape. They may also feel firm or solid, and might be fixed to the tissue in the breast. They are also often painless. However, in a small percentage of women, a painful breast lump turns out to be cancer.

“It may sound conceited, but I knew I would be ok. It was never a question of whether I would beat cancer, but when. I knew that I would come out of this process free of cancer. This was just a bump in my road,” said Bec.

When you check your breasts be aware that quite often harmless lumps can be hormonal. So, if they are still present over the course of a full menstrual cycle it is advisable to get your breasts examined by a doctor.

FACTBOX

Each month the group is presented with information and education from local suppliers to alleviate the need to travel and promote services locally.

The Whitsunday Neighbourhood Centre, upon hearing that there were no active cancer support groups locally, has formed a Cancer Support Group in the Whitsundays. The group meets on the third Friday of each month.

By coming together with similar experiences, the group forms a social network for people with a cancer experience. Call 4946 7850 or email cdo@whitnc.org.au for more information.

Will there fina l

“I will never forget that morning. The trauma in my mother’s voice on the phone. The devastating realisation that she’s never coming back. Trying to comprehend the finality of those words. Someone has killed Shandee.” A sister, a mother, a family; still grieving for an innocent young woman, taken in a vicious and cowardly act of violence. Murdered in 2013, a community rallied behind the Blackburn family, calling for justice for Shandee. But it’s 2019 and justice never came. The man charged with Shandee’s murder was found not guilty following a Supreme Court jury's decision to acquit the accused in 2017. A decision which left

a community speechless and a family disillusioned with the justice system. With an inquest now underway in 2019, Shandee’s mother, Vicki, and her older sister, Shannah, have renewed hope that justice for Shandee might actually come. Vicki and Shannah spoke to us about the love they have for Shandee. They describe her as a cheeky girl who had her fair share of trouble, but of someone who was coming to terms with herself after being a difficult teenager. Vicki’s most vivid memories of Shandee come from both the first and last times she got to hold her.

She said, “The first time I got to just hold her, my baby, count her fingers and toes, watch her wrap her fingers around my finger, see her strawberry blonde hair. She was so tiny and so precious. “The last time I saw her. I could not hold her the way I wanted, but I could hold her hand, touch her, and be with her, much like the first time, but unlike the first time. This time I had to walk away...forever.” When Shandee was born, Shannah couldn’t wait to have a baby sister. The reality was, the girls fought a lot, as most sisters do, and Shannah constantly called her a little shithead. But, she was her shithead, and it wasn’t until Shandee was gone that Shannah realised how much you can fight with someone but deeply love them at the same time.

“She had a cheeky personality and wicked sense of humour. She could make you giggle in an instant. One thing we loved to do together was watch Disney movies and we had an ongoing joke which involved saying random one-liners from the movies to each other. When I see memories pop up on Facebook with funny things she has posted on my wall, my heart is filled with happiness and sadness all at once, with the fleeting happy memory of her but then the realisation she’s gone. “Not having the one person here who shared my utter stupid sense of humour has broken something in me that will never be repaired,” Shannah said. The knock on the door in the early hours of the morning is one which no parent could ever prepare themselves for. Vicki said, “Paul and I were home asleep. I heard a knock on the door and I got out of bed and went to get a robe on, thinking it was Shandee and that she had forgotten her key...again. Then the knock came again, and I just knew it was not Shandee. I knew something was not right and I just ran downstairs to open the door. I just kept asking the police who had been hurt, Shannah or Shandee. They told me Shandee has passed away. I felt instantly that it was true. I was just in shock. Stunned. There is no way any parent could prepare themselves for that moment. “I just felt as if my life started to slip away. As they were talking I just kept willing myself not to fall apart. I could see this was very difficult for them and I did not want to make it harder. Vicki said that there are no words to explain the anguish and physical pain you experience when hearing your child has died. “It was like all the sound was silenced except for those words. Yet the pounding of my heart was so loud. I tried to take a breath but I felt like the world was on my chest, I could only manage a few short gasps. That pain to breathe lasted months, I felt if I took a deep breath I would die, the pain was so intense. I have lost track of how many times I needed reassurance from an ECG to assure me the pain was not a medical issue. I was lucky my doctor understood and accommodated my fear.” After the police left, Vicki’s thoughts turned immediately to Shannah. They immediately organised

a lly be justice for Shandee?

a flight for her from the Gold Coast and then Vicki knew she had to call her. “I wish I never had to make that phone call, to knowingly inflict so much pain into my daughter is something that still haunts me. I know it was not my doing, however as a mother to hurt your daughter so devastatingly goes against everything a mother stands for. You are supposed to nurture and protect, that day I failed both my daughters in the most horrible way, in a way that cannot be fixed or ever repaired.” Later that day, Vicki and her family were asked to go to the police station to give their statements. Most questions were mundane, name and address, but when it came to the question of how many children she had, Vicki didn’t know how to answer. “I just sat there with tears running down my face. I still don’t know how to answer that question. I will always struggle with that question and avoid it as much as I can. Not because it upsets me, but because I don’t want to upset whomever it is asking such an innocent question. I don’t want to inflict that sorrow onto anyone else,” she said. Nothing could prepare Vicki for what came next. Identifying Shandee was one of the most heartbreaking and horrifying things a mother could ever be expected to do. “From the moment they told me Shandee had passed away, all I wanted to do was hold my daughter, but it was so hard to just breathe. I was so scared I would not survive. It took everything I had to just breathe. But this was not a choice. And I thought ‘Can I just say no? If I say no will it stop? Will I wake up and it will be a nightmare? Will it take the pain away from Shannah?’ “But I knew nothing I did would change what has happened. What has been done cannot be undone. “So for the first time, I said ‘Yes this is my daughter.’” If your heart is already aching for the Blackburn family, then spare a thought for what was yet to come. Day after day of hoping the killer would be found. The relief when the accused was charged with Shandee’s murder, but then the arduous and

frustrating trial which resulted in a not guilty verdict. Vicki commented, “Being forced to sit there day after day without hearing the truth come out about that night, I felt victimised all over again. It is so wrong that decisions are made that affect people’s lives without the truth being told. At times we heard things being claimed in court and I am sitting there with evidence to the contrary on my phone or in the police evidence. “By the second or third day I did not feel I could continue to attend as we were already feeling the process was a waste of time. I was told it would look bad for Shandee if I was not present. So we attended court each day so it would not look bad for our daughter. “This process felt like it stripped Shandee of her innocence.” Shannah agreed and said, “It was mind-blowing and disillusioning to sit in a court of law, knowing the evidence and truth we know, yet hearing statements completely to the contrary. Unless you have been through it yourself, you don’t realise the injustice that can be done. It’s embarrassing as a country that this is how our law works.” One last shining light has given hope to the Blackburn family that the truth will finally be told. The Queensland coroner has granted an inquest into Shandee’s death “I am hoping the inquest will bring out the truth about what happened that night. I believe this is the least the legal system needs to do. It has been very distressing that so much time, money and resources have been expended without the truth coming out. We are grateful that the coroner has called the inquest and given us our last chance to have the truth told. Until that happens, we are not able to speak freely, openly and honestly about Shandee’s death,” Vicki said. On average, one woman per week is murdered in Australia by her current or former partner. Let’s say that again. One. Per. Week. Domestic violence is a huge problem in Australia and Vicki says that enough is enough.

“Domestic violence is not new to me. I grew up with it as a child, but when Shandee was murdered, enough was enough. I always thought I had been a strong advocate against domestic violence, but Shandee’s death made me realise I hadn’t done enough. “For me as a mother, each time I hear the news that another person has died as a result of domestic violence, I go straight back to that morning and feel physically ill, that another mother has to hear those words.” Statistics don’t take into account all the suffering of those being exposed on a daily basis behind closed doors. A lot of those are innocent children who are not old enough to have a voice, they suffer in silence. Sadly, too often the only time they have a voice is when it is too late for them. “The truth about what happened the night Shandee died has not been told and I don’t want that to be silenced. No domestic violence victim should be silenced.” It’s memories of Shandee that keeps the fight in Vicki going. Her advice to other mother’s is to make all the memories you can, while you can. “No one can take your memories from you. They can make you cry, they can make you laugh after you have lost someone. But they also keep your loved ones with you. “I remember the first time I felt strong enough to go shopping on my own, although I was very anxious and nervous. I turned a corner in a shop and there were some bright lime-green gerberas. We had a private joke with the gerberas and lime green was her favourite colour. I burst out laughing and crying at the same time. Right there in that shop, I felt connected with my daughter again.”

Zonta Mackay Motivate, Inspire, Connect

“WE BELIEVE IN MAKING THE WORLD A BETTER PLACE BY EMPOWERING WOMEN, AND WE FIND JOY BY WORKING TOGETHER TOWARD GENDER EQUITY IN A SUPPORTIVE COMMUNITY OF LIKE-MINDED PROFESSIONALS THAT EVEN EXTENDS TO OTHER COUNTRIES AND CULTURES.”

• As a Zontian, you are achieving global impact through local action

Nearly 20 years into the new Millennium, it’s outrageous that the metaphorical ‘glass ceiling’ is still an issue, yet here we are. Thankfully, organisations such as Zonta International and its local clubs continue to empower women to become global advocates, developing leaders for gender equality. It is celebrating its centenary this year after 100 years of supporting women.

We chat to the President of Zonta Mackay, Leanne Shepherd, about what Zonta is doing to help women in our local community and overseas.

In 2019, one hundred years after Zonta was formed in Buffalo, New York; the legacy of Zonta's early members can be seen and felt through nearly 1200 Zonta clubs in 63 countries across the globe. Zonta Club of the Whitsundays

GREAT THINGS ARE DONE BY A SERIES OF SMALL THINGS BROUGHT TOGETHER. THIS IS THE FOCUS OF THE ZONTA CLUB OF THE WHITSUNDAYS WHICH WORKS TO PROVIDE A CONSTANT PROVISION OF SUPPORT TO WOMEN THROUGHOUT OUR COMMUNITY. President, Cath Fernbach, says that all it can take is a bit of encouragement or help to help a disadvantaged woman achieve great things. “Many times, a financial ‘hand-up’ and someone showing some interest in their endeavor’s makes all the difference in a woman’s life, to give them the confidence to achieve their goals. “Each year we assist women at our local refuge, through provision of personal hygiene and care packages and provide other support as needed. This is part of our ongoing commitment to women,” she said. Zonta Whitsundays is also dedicated to helping the next generation of women find strength and success in their future. “A new project that we want to start up this year is to work with each of the local schools to provide uniforms and educational supplies to those children who are in need of assistance. This project reflects one of our charter goals, which is to improve the educational status of women and girls. We also award educational scholarships and bursaries to students who are attending secondary schools.”

A highlight for Zonta Club Whitsundays was the successful sponsorship of a Z Club at St Catherine’s Catholic Education School in Proserpine. Cath commented, “St Cath’s Z Club is entering its second year after a very successful first year, something that we are very proud of. The objectives are to help young people with service to the school and the community both locally and internationally. It strives to help develop our leaders of the future.” This year is an exciting one for Zonta International and Zonta Club of the Whitsundays, with each organisation celebrating 100 years and 20 years of helping women respectively. The local Whitsunday club was chartered in March 1999 with 26 people, two of which are still members of the club today; Wendy Downes OAM and Joanie Watson. Today, the club continues to thrive and attracts participation from a diverse age-range of enthusiastic women. One of the biggest dates on the calendar for Zonta Whitsundays is International Women’s Day. This has been hosted annually since the club’s inception, with many sensational speakers sharing inspirational stories of success, often against the odds in professions which make it challenging for women to achieve leadership positions. “2019 is Zonta International’s 100th year so we've organised a very special event with our dynamic District Governor giving the address. It’s on Sunday 10th March at La Marina, Port of Airlie. Details are on our Facebook page. Tickets are available from Whitsunday Tickets for $58 plus booking fee. It’s a great opportunity to catch up with other women and enjoy a lovely meal in a relaxed social atmosphere,” Cath said.

Another popular annual event is a marquee fundraiser at the Bowen Cup, an opportunity for the ladies who work tirelessly throughout the year to glam up and have a great time at the races. Cath joined Zonta when she moved to Airlie Beach from Victoria, as a way to get to know other women who hold similar values. “Zonta has certainly been a fantastic place for developing friendships, as well as joining together to make the world a better place. “I’ve met so many people when we're out fundraising; at sausage sizzles, Christmas gift wrapping, or working market stalls; things I’d never done before but have been a great way of making friends and ultimately making a difference to someone’s life. When people support Zonta through donations or simply by purchasing a sausage, they are assisting in making our local families a little bit safer. “We work in raising public awareness about how domestic violence creates a ripple effect, which impacts the lives of the perpetrator, their family and even the family pets,” Cath said. Zonta Whitsundays is committed to the wellbeing of women and girls in our community locally and overseas. Funds raised go a long way toward assisting, educating and empowering women to reach their full potential. ARE YOU ZONTA’S NEXT CRUSADER FOR WOMEN’S RIGHTS?

Helping Local Women Find Work! For many women, re-entering the workforce can seem like a daunting task. Often we spend several years raising children and when we venture back into the world of work it seems like everything has changed. Our resumes are out of date, our experience is no longer current and we have lost our former confidence. To add to this, we can often feel alone and detached from the fast paced working environment we once knew and loved. For Mackay local, Charmaine, who had been a stay at home mum for 20 years, starting to look for work again meant she couldn’t find any network of support to help her achieve employment. Frustrated, Charmaine decided to start her own Facebook page helping the women of Mackay get back into the workforce. To think of helping others when she was struggling herself was admirable. “I created a not for profit group called Mackay Women Return to Work. It is a place for women to discuss the challenges we face as being women/ mothers wanting to return to work. Women could come and ask questions, and we will find the answer,” she explained.

Initially, Charmaine began by calling local companies and asking them to post job vacancies in her page. She would also organise meet-ups for local women who could share morning tea so they could talk about their goals and ambitions. “At first, I thought that nobody wanted to join the group, and that maybe it was a silly idea to start the page. I was very surprised when people started to like the page and we were getting responses from both employees and employers,” said Charmaine. This was back in 2011 and within a few years, the Mackay Women Return to Work Facebook page had over 10,000 followers. It was clear that there were many women in similar situations and Charmaine had found a way to bring them together. Although she now works full-time in an administration role for St Vincent de Paul, Charmaine still monitors the group with a team of volunteers. This year she is organising free resume writing workshops, returning to work and dressing for work information sessions. For more information check out their Facebook page.

INFORMATION IS POWER Free Information Sessions for Families of People with a Drug Addiction For many people going through a drug addiction, the social exclusion they feel can often make the problem worse. The same can be true for the families of people with a drug addiction. They can feel ashamed, guilty and scared to talk about what they are going through. Recently Drug ARM received funding from the Department of Child Safety Youth and Women to roll out a new specialist alcohol and other drug service for families across Queensland. On a ground level, this means an initiative called Breakthrough for Families Queensland will be launching an ongoing series of free public information sessions for family members of people who are using alcohol or other drugs.

Participation in the program is voluntary and the sessions will aim to be culturally respectful, accessible and inclusive. Joyce Murphy (pictured) will be leading the information sessions and is looking forward to connecting with the community, especially those in rural areas that have previously been too isolated to receive resources. “Our organisation provides compassion and specialist care through a range of programs and services that include education, outreach, prevention and treatment. “At Drug ARM we take a holistic approach to recovery. We believe in treating all the factors that contribute to alcohol and drug use, not just the issue itself,” said Joyce.

The sessions will provide families with accurate information; equip them with the skills and knowledge to navigate the treatment system and address barriers to seeking help.

Furthermore, the initiative recognises that every case is individual and therefore needs an individual level of care. Joyce can also link the community to other programs in the local area, like AOD group programs, withdrawal support services or counselling.

The program will also include opportunities to connect family members to support workers and other social services.

“Substance use affects us all and is an issue that needs to be addressed publicly not behind closed doors in the hope it will disappear,” said Joyce.

TWO MONTHS DOWN ALREADY? HOW ARE THOSE 2019 NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONS GOING?

Was one goal to improve your financial situation? Have you made a start? Getting control of your finances is one of the hardest things to do. If it was easy, we’d all be disciplined savers who don’t waste money but the reality is many of us spend more than we earn and are gradually drowning in debt. Changing the habits and patterns in our lives to fix this problem is one of the toughest jobs in life, akin to quitting smoking or lasting weight loss. We all know that losing weight is about burning off more calories through activity

and taking in less calories through food. That said if you are stuck in the cycle of weight loss followed by weight gain you know how hard it is make lasting changes to your activity and eating habits. We all know quitting smoking is about gradually weening ourselves off the nicotine cravings but for most it’s almost impossible to break those habits that lead to reaching for the packet. With weight loss and quitting smoking, it’s often something people will try several times before they succeed. Some spend their whole lifetime continually trying. Why do we only try getting our finances in order once before we give up, or like most people never try at all? PMS 2768 c 100 | m 90 | y13 | k61

Some people will take a few goes to get it right. Some will need some coaching to help them get on track. Some will need the added motivation of clarifying their real life goals. Some benefit from getting a clear view of the potential future. Some need some analysis of their spending patterns. Some need some accountability to someone. What’s your 2019 goals and how serious are you about achieving them?

PROSERPINE FEATURE A SMALL TOWN WITH BIG CHARM For the third year in a row Core Life Magazine is paying homage to the vibrant country town of Proserpine. In the heart of the Whitsundays, this friendly farming town is full of old-school charm. It is a community where shop owners beckon you inside, eager to share a yarn and anyone on the street will smile as you walk by.

BAKING BREADS IN PROSERPINE FOR 30 YEARS! When Lorella and Stephen Cassells opened the doors to their bakery in 1986 they never imagined that, over thirty years later, they would still be operating in the local town they love. “I’ve known all my customers for generations, their children are our customers now!” said Lorella proudly. Starting off with a small range of goods which focused mainly on fresh bread, Whitsunday Bakery was originally located at the top of Main Street. In 1994 Lorella and Stephen decided to relocate to their current location at the heart of Main Street so they could expand their range and be more central. Since then, the bakery has become a hub for the local community. They still sell fresh bread but have diversified to include pastries, pies, cakes and other sweet treats. While growing the business, Lorella and Stephen also grew a family, raising four children.

“My crowning achievement was getting them all through school!” Laughs Lorella. Another one of the couple’s biggest and most demanding achievements was when they opened a wholesale store in Cannonvale and a second bakery at the Whitsunday Plaza Shopping Centre. Over the next six years they established a strong, thriving business network and attracted the interest of another local bakery looking to expand. Ready to relax, unwind and enjoy a slower pace of life, the couple happily sold the two Cannonvale outlets enabling them to focus on what they love; feeding the friendly faces of Proserpine. This is something they do well, along with their staff who are loyal and bubbly. Pictured, are Sheena Hinschen and Shannon Faletti. Sheena has worked at Whitsunday Bakery for 23 years, since she was 16 and Shannon is also a local lady who has been part of the team for 12 months.

VERIS SURVEYING THE JAKE

MICHAEL

NATHAN www.corelife.com.au 24 24 www.corelife.com.au

HE FUTURE If the world was one flat, solid mass; perhaps the job of a surveyor might be less technical. But given we live our lives on land made up of a mix of minerals, floating on liquid mantle; the area we live, work and play is up, down and complex. Surveying determines the three-dimensional position of points and the distances and angles between them; critical information professionals need every day for all types of construction, from building the family home to drilling underground coal mines.

PROSERPINE FEATURE

MEET THE TEAM Surveyor – JAKE NAPIER Growing up in the Whitsundays, Jake’s love of water has allowed him to develop a successful niche as a surveyor. While most would think of surveying as being land-based, Jake has worked on the construction of a marine offloading facility, marinas and bridges. “I recently spent a week with National Parks on a 12 metre boat surveying Heron, Lady Musgrave, Lady Elliot and North West Islands on the Capricorn Coast. A great office,” he said.

The advancement of new technology means surveyors can now take measurements and report data with increased speed and accuracy, allowing construction to take place faster than ever before.

To become a surveyor, Jake studied a Bachelor of Spatial Science Technology at the University of Southern Queensland. Midway through his degree he started working full time as a surveyor and has been with Veris for one year.

A business united in excellence, Veris combines national strength with local expertise to ensure exceptional project outcomes. With offices across Australia and a proven track record in public and private sectors, Veris is a market leader in planning, design, surveying and spatial solutions.

How has technology improved the field of surveying?

Scott Reid is the Principal Surveyor for Veris Mackay and the Whitsundays and explains how Veris utilise a combination of traditional and modern surveying techniques to produce the best outcome for clients. “Along with the more traditional survey equipment such as GPS and Theodilites, we have UAV (Unmanned Aerial Vehicle) sometimes referred to as Drones, TLS (Terrestrial Laser Scanning), MLS (Mobile Laser Scanning), 3D Sonar system used for Hydrographic Surveys. “The advantage of using this equipment is that we can survey large areas very quickly, efficiently and accurately, thus saving time for delivery of the product. Another is increased safety. It is safer as the surveyor can remove themselves from any machinery, slippery slopes or undulating terrain,” he said. Veris companies were among the earliest adopters of Terrestrial Laser Scanning technology in Australia. Terrestrial scanning is commonly used for heritage documentation, 3D topographical surveys, accident sites, confined spaces survey and Mechanical, Electrical and Plumbing (MEP) models. “Over the years, we have worked together with hundreds of clients throughout Australia and worldwide to provide outstanding solutions to engineering problems. Our experienced engineers and CAD designers are experts in their field and work in close collaboration with our clients to ensure a timely and successful outcome to every project.” UAV’s can be used to collect geographical data for the creation of high density, highly accurate ortho-rectified photos, 3D models and point clouds. UAVs are particularly useful for the survey of difficult sites to enter, such as quarries, sandpits and landfills. Hydrographic Surveying provides a detailed underwater inspection of the sea floor and structures. This is done with a 3D sonar system to capture point cloud datasets in conjunction with high-resolution 2D imagery. When paired with terrestrial 3D laser scanned data, Veris can deploy underwater 3D sonar to provide a complete three dimensional as-built model of the structure both above and below the water line. Technology is only as good as the person operating it, which is why Veris is committed to the ongoing education and investment of its team to ensure its surveyors can provide technological expertise to clients. Wherever a client operates, Veris is there with the expertise and experience, to form partnerships that truly build better environments.

“Surveyors now have access to GPS technology, drones for surveying purposes along with machine controlled surveying equipment which is revolutionising the industry.”

Surveyor – MICHAEL MULLISS After graduating with a Bachelor of Spatial Science from the University of Southern Queensland, Michael Mullis spent two years working on a high-rise construction site in Brisbane. He made the move to Mackay and the Whitsundays to gain rural experience in surveying, and got more than he bargained for. “On one job site I tried to protect my work ute from hungry horses, they ate my windscreen wipers, side mirror and had a chew on the bonnet and bullbar!” He joined Veris in 2013 before starting a family, he now has three children aged 4, 2 and 10-months. He has always been a bit of a guru when it comes to computers and technology which has suited the technological advancement he has experienced in the industry. What do you enjoy about technology in surveying? “The drone is an awesome piece of equipment for mapping, photos, and site inspections. Within hours huge amounts of data can be captured and processed with amazing accuracy.”

Surveyor – NATHAN RADFORD From Royal Lifeguard to civil construction; Nathan Radford’s career started in Brisbane, where he went from saving lives to building complex roading in the city’s northern suburbs. He transferred to the Whitsundays and later joined Veris where he worked on some of the largest solar farms in Queensland. This has progressed to managing a survey team on large-scale solar farm projects Australia-wide, taking him to interesting rural locations. “The last town I stayed in was Gulgong, New South Wales. This town is on the old ten dollar note and has a lot of historical value. Every weekend, Gulgong is at capacity with people visiting and enjoying a cold beer at some of the historical pubs,” he said. How has technology changed surveying significantly in recent years? “When I started in the civil construction industry, a surveyor would stake a line which represented the centre of the road being constructed. From those stakes I used a prism that had a series of mirrors that would let you clearly see exactly 90 degrees in either direction. This tool, a 30-metre tape and a string ling were my tools to set out nearly everything required to build a road and surrounding infrastructure. I have not used one of those tools in many years. Now technology has advanced to robotic total stations which improves accuracy and productivity.”

LIFE FOR A 6

KEYRA SMITH At only 15 years of age, local Proserpine High School student, Keyra Smith, is fast on her way to becoming cricket’s next modern-day megastar. With a natural talent for fast-bowling and big-hitting, the all-rounder is on her way to the 2019 Australian Indoor National Championships in Melbourne this July, representing Queensland in the Under 17 division. Remarkable for a girl who didn’t know what cricket was until a family friend asked if she wanted to play. That was when she was seven and she hasn’t stopped playing since. Her preference is bowling and she’s only 2km/hr away from breaking the 100km/hr speed for a bowl. Her talent was spotted early in her career and at only 11 years of age, she was invited to play in the President’s XI Team, the girl’s equivalent of playing for North Queensland. She made local history at age 12 when she became the first girl to ever represent the Whitsundays on a cricket field. At 13 she had her first shot playing for Queensland in the Under 14’s grade, at the Indoor Cricket National Championships held in Mackay. She has represented the Mackay Whitsunday Cyclones for outdoor cricket and earlier this year attended trials in Brisbane, resulting in selection for the Queensland U17’s Girls Indoor Team; a great feat considering the Whitsundays don’t have an indoor center. To keep on top of her game, Keyra plays in mixed-grade competitions due to a shortage of local ladies in the sport. “On Fridays, if I’m not playing at the Proserpine Cricket Club, I am attending my Queensland Pathway Training in Mackay every other week. Saturdays, I play in the Mackay Cricket League for U16’s Brothers/Proserpine, then some Saturdays I am back in Proserpine to play in the men’s league. “I am the only girl at Proserpine High School who plays cricket and was the first girl to represent the school for cricket,” she said. Keyra hopes to make a career from cricket, representing Australia and travelling the world. She is thankful to many local businesses who have supported her passion, helping her with funding to attend the Indoor National Championships. “I’m grateful to my Mum and Dad for all the time they put into my cricket and training. As we live so far away from everything, we do travel a lot, as there is not much cricket here for girls only. I’d like to thank all the sponsorships I have received for helping me in getting to the National Championships in July. I’d like to also thank Peach & Pear Catering, Reefside Auto Electrical, Whitsunday Food Service and The Whitsunday Regional Council for their kind sponsorships too,” Keyra said. FACTS ABOUT KEYRA What kind of bat do you use? “At the moment I am using an Impala players grade bat. It’s a really good bat. I’ve done a fair bit of knocking it in myself, but my Dad has helped too.” Best on-field achievements? “My first 50, I made 56 at last year’s U15 Queensland School Girls Tournament. Also getting bowling figures of 2/17 in the men’s league. And one time I did a dive throw and it hit the stumps and the batter was run out.” Best memory?

“My most memorable moment was last year, getting to bowl in front of the WBBL Brisbane Heat ladies when they came to Mackay. They did some training sessions with us and they got to see me bowling.”

from borneo with love St Catherine’s student’s volunteer overseas

It takes a special kind of compassion to step out of your comfort zone and safe home-town environment in order to help people less fortunate. This is exactly what eight passionate students from St Catherine’s Catholic College in Proserpine are about to experience this September school holidays when they fly to Borneo with their teacher Grace Watson. The students could be assisting with a variety of tasks from building classrooms, kitchens, toilets, playgrounds and planting vegetation whilst interacting and learning from other students and their local culture. “While we are there, we will be eating, sleeping and living in a longhouse with many families from the community,” said Grace. “This experience will no doubt open the student’s hearts and minds, not only the poverty and injustice in our world, but more importantly, it will help them to realise their capacity to be change makers.” For Isabel in year 8 who loves the dramatic arts and has a goal of setting foot on every continent in the world, making a difference is her passion. “I want to help beat poverty, stop homelessness and spread the love that everyone is capable of creating,” she said. Fellow volunteer, Jessica Porter from year 11 who loves dancing and has recently returned from an overseas exchange program is hoping this trip will add to her experiences. “I think this trip will broaden my worldview and make me more grateful for everything I have,” said Jessica. Also from year 11, Samantha Bailey who lives an active life and loves horses, is excited about experiencing a different culture. “I am most interested in seeing another way of living and helping people in need,” she said. With motivations like these, the communities in Borneo are truly blessed. So too are the students and their teacher who are about to have a cultural exchange that will re-frame their lives forever.

We wish them all the luck on their adventure.

HUGE RANGE OF SUNGLASSES From designer brands to budget bargains

To this day, Rosie Mohorko is filled with anxiety with each plane that passes overhead. Few of us can understand the sheer terror of living in a wartorn country, but growing up in the Balkans in Europe; Rosie survived the atrocities of two conflicts. The first, a civil war in the former Yugoslavia and then the NATO bombing of Serbia in the 1990’s. “Those were the most challenging years for every individual living in constant fear. It was an unnecessary and illogical war, effecting the wellbeing and sanity of all who survived,” Rosie said. It’s poetic justice that Rosie left an area of concrete wasteland and is now responsible for incorporating green spaces into the Mackay region. She is a Director and Landscape Architect for Leaf Wood Rock Landscapes, a business which formed as a culmination of her former company, Fine Gardens; and a predominantly construction landscape business, DGF Landscapes, owned by Warren Driscoll. The partners merged to form one of Mackay’s leading architectural landscape design and construction firms, a onestop shop for landscape design, construction and maintenance with a dedication to turning dreams into reality. “If you can dream it, we can build it!” Rosie’s early passion for nature and art led her instinctively into the field of landscape architecture. She spent most of her free time in nature, picking snowdrops in early Spring to picking fruit, nuts and wild mushrooms in Autumn. She was also a talented artist and the subjects of her paintings were predominantly nature. “When the time came to make a decision on what to study at University, I was stuck between biology and art. It was only by a chance that one of my friends, who knew me well, suggested Landscape Architecture. The entry exam comprised of biology and a drawing skills test, which suited my strengths,” Rosie said. She studied and worked in Europe before moving to Australia, where she has relished in a range of opportunities and projects to increase her industry knowledge and experience. Rosie commented, “I enjoy every aspect of my profession, from planning to the delivery of the project. “However, I am very passionate about the implementation of green infrastructure within a built environment. It is integration of natural green elements; like green roofs, green walls, rain gardens, bioswales, infiltration strips and porous pavement to combat the challenges of nature. I believe that if we continue to challenge nature, rather than work with it, we will face severe climate challenges ahead of us.” Landscape design and construct project, Centaur Park has been both the most challenging and inspiring project for Rosie to date.

“This cattle station, 100km north-west of Moranbah, came with logistical challenges and also unpredictable hurdles nature put in front of us. Kelli Medford and Jodi Shambrook MANTRA BOATHOUSE APARTMENTS AND PEPPERS AIRLIE BEACH

“She will step in and straighten my crown without telling the world that it was crooked.” They may be industry competitors, but in life, these ladies lift each other up instead of bringing the other down. As General Managers of two of Airlie Beach’s most prestigious properties, Jodi Shambrook and Kelli Medford can relate to the pressure of one-another’s position. The ladies knew of each other for a long time within the Whitsundays, but it was in 2015, when Kelli joined the Mantra Group, that the ladies formed a friendship at a national conference. Kelli commented, “We would meet in the lobby each morning to attend the conference, representing the Whitsunday Region, and she would come down in these crazy outfits. The lift would open and I was like, who is this chick, and what is she wearing? Every day was a new surprise. She still wears crazy outfits but I wouldn’t change that as I would rather have a little bit of crazy than a beige pair of pants any day,” she said.

38 www.corelife.com.au

Jodi’s crazy outfits are thanks to Blackmilk Clothing, a Brisbane-based company which Jodi will happily admit she’s obsessed with. Her wardrobe is loud to match her personality. Jodi has been with the Mantra Group for 16 years, since the beginning of her hospitality career. She was General Manager at several Mantra properties in Australia and New Zealand before transitioning to Peppers Airlie Beach almost 10 years ago. Exceeding guest expectations is something she and her team strive to achieve daily. Kelli has been in the hospitality industry for 24 years and the General Manager of Mantra Boathouse for four years. She ensures her team are as effective and efficient as possible by giving them the guidance and advice they need to be the best they can be. Although the ladies had developed strong admiration for each other, it was Cyclone Debbie which opened their eyes to each other’s true strength. “We naturally stepped into our leadership roles to ensure the wellbeing of our teams

and guests, but also stepped up to organise community assistance. This is when we realised just how strong we both were. We would talk regularly, share staff and supplies to get things done, and be a sounding board to each other. Jodi’s property got hit hard and I was blown away by her resilience,” Kelli said. What is something you admire most about the other person? Kelli: I like that Jodi will step in and straighten my crown without telling the world that it was crooked. We can sit back and have a few drinks and be really honest with each other about work or personal stuff without the fear of that honesty being shared with others or more importantly used against us later. She has strength, integrity and makes me laugh, even when we should probably be crying. Jodi: Kelli tells it how it is! I love that about her. I learn so much from Kelli with her years in the industry in various roles, as any questions I ask she is there to bounce around strategies and empower me, so I think myself lucky to get to work alongside such an amazing woman and in such a beautiful destination!

ARTISTRY & BEAUTY

“I began a course hoping to become great at eyebrows, and I came away not only doing that, but wanting to constantly better myself.” What started as an at-home business for Bianca, soon grew to accommodate an increasing demand from women who wanted brows on-fleek. It began with encouragement from a business mentor, Elle Wilson, the founder of the TrueBrow System. “She truly inspired me and created a passion and drive within myself I didn’t even realise I had. In particular, she taught me not to let fear stand in the way of passion, so I just went for it. “When my children were younger, I worked from home, but then moved to a room in a hairdressing salon to then having my own beauty salon. I’m so glad I did. It’s amazing to go to work each day and just love what you do in the space you have created,” Bianca said. Her business, Bianca Jade Brow Artistry & Beauty, has garnished a

reputation for brow perfection, championing natural-looking eyebrows which can completely transform a face. It has just celebrated three years in business. “We practice the TrueBrow System and it truly is world class. We look at a brow differently, using cutting-edge techniques to ensure success and results; not just for a few weeks until your next appointment, but truly restoring, correcting or transforming your brows, forever. “Brows done wrong can be so harsh on a woman’s face, often ageing even! What we do is soft, natural brows; enhancing and opening the face. Framing the face but not overpowering,” she said. Bianca encourages all women to call in for a visit, her salon is on Macalister Street in Mackay, across the road from Artspace, and offers a diverse range of services from brows and lash tints to waxing and tanning. “A beauty salon is so much more than the services provided. It’s a friendly face, a place to feel rejuvenated and beautiful and a place where you’re welcomed and made to feel comfortable. It’s like having a warm cuppa with a girlfriend.”

SOUL FOOD MARKET SKIP THE DIET, JUST FEED THE SOUL. After raising two children, Kylie Cox was ready to get back into physical competition when her kids started school. This challenge was her chance to get a piece of herself back. After two years of physical training, she was ready for her first body building competition, but it would take a complete overhaul of her habits. She had always cooked for taste, without much consideration for nutrition, with food being central to many family celebrations. “I felt miserable, because I felt like I wasn’t feeding a fundamental part of my personality. I started researching and preparing food that looked and tasted the same, but was made with wholefood and natural ingredients, cutting out gluten and dairy. I loved it and I loved the way it fuelled my body,” Kylie said. Others began to notice the changes in Kylie, her body was burning fat while retaining muscle and her energy levels were elevated. She began food prepping for other people and then worked in a wholefoods kitchen. When that business closed, an opportunity opened for Kylie to create Soul Food Market, a place which feeds the soul as well as the body. “When you start to live a holistic lifestyle

and start fueling your body properly, you become aware of all aspects of that lifestyle choice. This includes how foods are packaged and processed, conscious of the effect that has on your own body and the environment. “Soul Food Market is a shop for everyone. We sell medicinal foods and herbs, but we also have everyday items for the regular shopper. We stock everything the supermarket does except meat and veg, everything is organic and we eliminate plastic wrapping. We supply paper bags and recycled glass jars in an effort to reduce waste on a grand scale,” she said. Kylie says that her success is made possible by a supportive family and wonderful staff. “My husband Glenn supports me and believes in me when sometimes I don’t. The girls I work with fill my days with light and laughter and my children have adapted well to not having their mother attending to their every beck and call. The important people in my life make it achievable,” she said. Feed your soul at Soul Food Market, you’ll find Kylie and the team on MacAlister Street in Mackay for treats that won’t make you feel like a cheat.

“Bianca, you can’t go on like this, you need to do Pilates to build your core strength. Your body is falling apart, find somewhere and start NOW!” These words from a friend changed Bianca Seccombe’s life forever. After an accident on a ski slope in Japan, Bianca went through months of physical therapy. It was her massage therapist who suggested Pilates, a piece of advice which put her on an enriching career path. From her first session, she was in love with the variety of movement Pilates provided, and for the first time in months, she was able to get through a workout without pain. Passion turned into a positive obsession and Bianca studied and trained in everything Pilates. Once she discovered the ‘Reformer’ (a machine which assists in Pilates exercices) she knew Mackay needed an advanced Pilates studio. “Everyone has a preference, either the mat or the Reformer. For me, I fell in love with the benefits the Reformer could give to my workout, with increased resistance and a larger range of motion,” she said. Bianca opened a studio in her home with eight mats and two Reformers. Demand quickly grew to more than 18 classes per week, so in 2013 she opened a larger studio on Discovery Lane, near the Mater Hospital in North Mackay. “We have a wide selection of classes and equipment to suit every person and every body. From children as young as four coming to classes with their parents, to clients over 80 achieving incredible strength and stability; Pilates really is for everyone. We have pregnant Pilates, Mumilates and rehabilitation-specific one-onone sessions. Pilates isn’t only for ladies, but also for guys who want to benefit from increased core strength, muscle definition, and reduced injuries,” Bianca said. As you walk through the front door, Powercore Pilates is a welcoming sanctuary of calmness and positivity. Candles, salt lamps and soothing music create an inviting ambiance. Bianca has built the business to cater for the needs of a large cross-section of people, with classes from early morning to evening. With a demanding schedule, Bianca admits she takes time out during the day to workout and then rejuvenate. “I’ll always find time to fit in my own session of Pilates and then have a quick siesta with a heat bag in the studio. I’ll race home during the middle of the day to get housework and food prep done and then go back to work in the evening,” she said. Bianca credits her success to the support of her family and staff. She commented, “I look at Powercore Pilates as being our business; mine, my husband’s, our children’s (Bodie and Izzy) and our hard-working talented staff. This year, I’m looking forward to taking some time away with a family trip to the United States for my husband’s 40th birthday. We don’t get a lot of time off so this will be a special treat for all of our hard work and commitment.”

y r e u r D e n n Lea GARDIAN

“Changing careers at the age of 40 would scare most people, but I was ready for a new and exciting challenge.” When Gardian Real Estate opened its doors in 2013, Leanne Druery was part of the founding team. She had been finalising a project with Wesfarmers when Gardian Director, Ben Kerrisk, asked if she would like to be his Personal Assistant for a brand-new real estate firm. Little more than two years later, Leanne launched her career as a Sales Consultant, thanks to the encouragement of Gardian Directors. Leanne now has her own Personal and Administration assistant to help with her growing and diverse portfolio. “My aim is to offer the people of Mackay a professional service that is positive, transparent and filled with compassion. Many people have a story behind selling their home and I like to take the time to understand how I can help them achieve their goals, whilst also guiding them in one of their biggest financial decisions. Likewise, nothing thrills me more than handing over the keys to a new buyer that is about to open the door to their new chapter,” she said. Leanne had a humbling childhood. Growing up on a beef and dairy farm, she helped her Uncle’s muster cattle and put them through the dips. She witnessed what hard work truly was and saw the effect of devastating drought. It instilled in her a fighting spirit which she has needed being a solo-mother and raising teenagers while working full time. Leanne believes anyone can make a difference in their career if they set goals and work hard to reap the rewards of accomplishment. The awards she has received include Elite Agent Magazine’s Transform Winner 2017, Real Estate’s Industry Influencer 2018, Gardian CEO Award 2018 and now Rate My Agents Agent of the Year 2019 for Mackay, have been testament to that. “I love empowering other women and inspiring them to follow their dreams and be the best versions of themselves. I go to work every day and feel proud of the fact that I give it my best shot. With gratitude, hard work and passion, it is amazing what you can achieve, and bright lipstick helps on those days when I need convincing! I am blessed to have a team and a village that supports and encourages me to climb those mountains.” From dolls houses and tea parties to pearls and prizes, we are all still those little girls with big dreams.

“People tend to only share the parts of their life that make the highlight reel. As a society we have become addicted to the good and pretend the bad does not exist.” It’s called the Social Media Effect, where people are more pre-occupied with sharing the positives of their life than they are in forming real connections and sharing raw emotion. The psychological effects have been proven to have a negative impact on our happiness and wellbeing, so why do we continue to compare ourselves with others? those around her, Meiling Elson isn’t afraid to be vulnerable, saying that there is a real power and freedom that comes with being yourself. “I am not afraid to be seen, I honour my happiness, I accept my pain. I believe this allows the women around me to be more honest about who they are, acknowledge their good and their bad, and know they will not be judged. “Some may see this as a weakness, but I get to show up every day of my life and be me! REAL and RAW! Imperfections at all,” she said. Meiling and her husband, Trent, created North

Queensland Glass in 2010 while raising a young family. They then converted their home into a bed and breakfast, Pepperberry House, as a way to share their peaceful retreat with others. As a business woman, Meiling is constantly striving for personal growth. “From the outside, I can appear to know it all, or look like I have it all together, yet in my own reflection, I see my deep thirst for knowledge for growth. “Over the last couple of years, I have invested time, energy and resources into fostering mutually-beneficial relationships. leaders, lifters and personal developers who can broaden my influence, not only for my own advancement but also for the people I choose to associate with. It certainly creates flow of great energy and momentum in my current life,” she said. push me forward, hold me accountable, and continue to shift me out of my comfort zone to overcome my fears. Currently I have been working with a team of extremely inspiring women, both personally and professionally. They have key characteristics that I really stand for, some similar and some different. This is beneficial as the knowledge they possess inspires me to refine my own skills and to show up each day as the best version of myself.” Regardless of gender, Meiling believes that in any industry as long as you work hard,

know your product, respect your team and are passionate about what you do, you will earn respect and become successful in your own right. She doesn’t believe she has faced her greatest challenge in business yet, which is why she says it’s important to keep up with changing industry and business trends. “I believe in continuous learning, so I’m prepared for whatever comes my way. We only fall over once we begin to stand still.”

SWIMMING LESSONS SAVE LIVES! Airlie Beach Swim School by Danielle owner and swim instructor, Danielle Shea, advocates that learning to swim teaches children a respect for the water and prevents unnecessary drownings. Since Danielle took over the swim school seven years ago, the business has grown, with numbers increasing everyday. Danielle is a passionate instructor, teaching children how to swim is her life! Not only does Danielle have over 20 years of instructing experience under her belt, she was also a state, country and national swimming champion in her younger years. Danielle has a unique teaching system and prides herself and her team on being the preferred swim school choice for parents. Danielle’s mother, Lynda, owned a swim school in their home town of Nowra in New South Wales for more than 30 years. She has recently semi-retired and relocated to the Whitsundays to help Danielle with her enterprise. Danielle and her team encourage parents to get their children in the water for lessons from as young as four-months-old. Her nephew, Franky, started lessons at three months old and is already a little fish in the water.

“We cater for babies through to one-on-one sessions, development groups, basic and advanced mini-squads. We also provide private sessions for adults wanting to learn to swim as well as aqua fitness classes for people looking to have some fun and get fit in the water. Our instructor Lynda is a qualified Fitness and Pilates coach,” Danielle said. As if running one business wasn’t timeconsuming enough, Danielle also owns Airlie Beach Babysitting, an enterprise she started from scratch. “The babysitting business has been in operation for ten years and it’s the only one of its kind in the Whitsundays. As well as giving local parents a night off, we also service the wedding industry, and holiday makers. We are lucky to work with many of the local wedding venues and planners to provide this service and have exclusive contracts with venues such as Villa Botanica,” Danielle said. With the safety of children as the number one priority in both businesses, not only does Danielle have the patience of a saint, but she also ensures her team have both the experience and qualifications necessary to ensure a high level of service.

“All of our babysitting staff are qualified childcare providers and teachers, or mothers. We ensure each babysitter has their blue card and up-todate first aid and CPR training. We have a team of ten babysitters who are all fantastic with children.” Although Danielle gets plenty of exercise from teaching six days per week in the pool, she loves to work out at local gyms Gravity and WMA for all-over strength training, as well as Pilates, but her number one sport has always been swimming. She commented, “Swimming is the number 1 skill every child or adult should learn and our aim at Airlie Beach Swim School by Danielle is to have all children confident in the water, know basic survival skills and can swim at least basic freestyle before they start prep.” “We all deserve to feel confident and comfortable in the water, myself and my amazing team including Rianna, Lynda, Lynda (mum) and Mel (reception) are here to help you on your swimming journey.”

You don’t need to be wealthy to be financially healthy. It’s a common misconception that only the rich can benefit from strategic financial planning, but small incremental changes in habits can benefit any financial situation. Sometimes all you need is some good advice and a plan in place to turn your bank balance from zero to hero. As Teneale Laister confirms, taking charge of our wealth starts by focusing on what we want our money to do for us and then making decisions in that direction in a disciplined manner. “We empower people from all walks of life to make small financial changes to produce big results. We strive to make this advice available to everyone; from young people wanting advice on the purchase of their first home, to people whose financial circumstances change suddenly due to death or divorce. These are hugely emotional times for people and it can often be the first time that someone faces their financial future without a significant other who may have previously controlled the finances. “Aged care is also another consideration that people don’t realise we can assist with. In addition, we can offer advice and support around Centrelink payments,” Teneale said. Teneale started her career in a local law firm, but a mentor guided her toward the field of financial planning. It’s not a career often considered and Teneale says that it’s a very rewarding career choice to help people achieve personal growth and stability. She started at Alman Partners in 2008 before finishing her Bachelor of Commerce (with Distinction) and an Advanced Diploma in Financial Services through Deakin University in 2012, majoring in Finance, Financial Planning and Management. She became Partner at Alman Partners in early 2016. As well as a strong mind, Teneale takes time to nurture the strength of her body also. She has a Purple Belt in Brazilian Jiu Jitsu and plays soccer for City Brothers. Yoga is her ‘me-time’ where she can zone out from the mental fatigue of work and raising a family. She has a five-year-old son and says it’s having a strong relationship with her husband that makes being a fulltime financial planner and a mother a possible combination. “Communication is key for us, we tell each other if we’re tired, stressed or hungry and both share the household responsibilities. We switch off from work at home and make an effort to be present as well as practice self-care. Everyone needs to take time to be kind to themselves,” she said. Don’t leave your financial future to chance. Contact Teneale at Alman Partners and discover the strength and stability of true wealth for yourself.

Kaleigh Nixon

PRECISE CORPORATION It’s a tag that Kaleigh Nixon brushes off, but there’s no denying that this business woman earns the reputation of being a supermum. But even supermum’s struggle, with Kaleigh admitting that she feels the guilt of dropping her young ones off at daycare so she can work. “Every minute I am away from our children I feel like I am neglecting them, even though they go to a fantastic day care and have lovely teachers and friends. The past year I have dropped my working days to three days per week for majority of the time so I can spend more time with the kids and do extra-curriculum activities,” she said. Given that Kaleigh is also eight months pregnant with her fourth child with fiancée, Ash, she emphasizes that she has to be very organised every day for everything to function, especially since they don’t have parents in Mackay to call on for additional help. “In all honesty I don’t know how I do it, but our family motto is “Get it done!” It can be difficult not having parents locally to call on for help, but I am lucky that Ash is a devoted partner and father and is home every night to help me. “I sacrifice ‘me time’ to make sure I am always ahead of the game; I get up early and stay up late doing chores, I do big healthy cook-ups on the weekend so they last most of the week so I am not picking up hungry, tired kids from day care and trying to cook dinner when we get home. I pack and get us ready the night before, so the mornings run smoothly. Overall, I am an extremely organised person with calendars and planners around the house so the kids (and Ash) know what’s happening so they aren’t stressed. It works well for us.” Kaleigh’s career started at Precise Corporation after she met Ash. She was a full-time physiotherapist but had always dreamed of one day owning her own business. During the mining downturn, it broke her heart to see Ash struggling personally and professionally, so she left her career as a physiotherapist behind to help. “I started simply helping where I could, but it didn’t take long before Ash and I realised we made a great team. While I was pregnant with our first child, Ariella, I helped him restructure the business to survive the tough times,” she said. Kaleigh learned the positions and procedures of the business and under Ash’s guidance, streamlined positions to cut costs and enable the team to work more efficiently. Her ability to oversee all departments meant she made an effective General Manager, where she also takes responsibility for the accounts, payroll and labour hire. She gives credit to their Office Manager, Sally Dellar for giving her the confidence to be able to cut her days back to spend more time with her children. “She has become an integral part of this operation and allows me to take time away from the business when needed without having to worry. We’ve worked hard to foster a great team environment,” Kaleigh said. Kaleigh and Ash are getting married next year at Paradise Cove, Airlie Beach. On top of her hectic workload, Kaleigh can now add wedding planner to the list, but it’s an extra responsibility she’s looking forward to as it means moving one step closer toward marrying her soulmate.

The grass can always be greener ANALYSIS REALTY The path seldom walked is often the one you find yourself on. Career-choices are often by chance rather than choice, but as Annette Stripeikis and Alice Faust have shown, the challenge can often bring reward. The pair are two of the most experienced industry-experts in the Whitsundays, bringing a combined 32 years to real estate. The pair predominantly worked in property management before gaining the qualifications to become licensed agents. Despite their knowledge, they don’t take themselves too seriously, putting buyers and sellers at ease with their signature sense of humour. Alice laughed, “After finishing Year 12, I sent out a heap of resumes and stupidly took the first offer. Blow me down, here I still am.” She and Annette are co-owners of Analysis Realty, but showing that the ladies aren’t afraid to roll their sleeves up and do the ‘hard yards’ they also own a lawn mowing business, using the income to fund the opening of their own real estate company.

“Once the decision was made to start our own business, we realised that both of us would need to update our study prior to opening the doors. With both of us now unemployed from resigning from full time employment, we decided mowing lawns would be an easy way to earn some dollars. Well, mowing lawns in our ridiculous climate is definitely not an easy task and I think it only took a couple of days before we were missing the comfort of an airconditioned office,” Annette said. Their business, Kiss My Green Grass, is a prime example of both their sense of humour and strong work ethic. Running alongside Analysis Realty, the businesses compliment each other; with one mentally draining and the other physically draining, it brings balance to their work days. Both businesses have presented their own unique challenges, with Annette commenting that what you learn on paper certainly doesn’t prepare you for your competition. “At first, up against some big players in the industry, it was incredibly daunting. But we were

overwhelmed with the community support we received from clients, entrusting us with the sale of their properties. It was a big learning curve but we’re both stronger from the experience.” The point of difference with Analysis Realty is the attentive service. “Real Estate training courses lead you to believe that clients are not your friends and are purely a business transaction. This didn’t sit with us and we don’t apply this ideology. A key part of what we do is to build long-term relationships through respect and trust. Foremost, we want our clients to feel comfortable with us and confident we have their best interests at heart. We make ourselves available out of business hours and strive to deliver personal service.” Open homes are often a social affair with wine and cheese for prospective buyers. If the grass is starting to overgrow your ‘For Sale’ sign, give Annette and Alice a call for a fresh-approach to a fast transaction. At the least, they can mow your lawn to give you the best-looking property on the block.

GYPSY AND THE BOWERBIRD “Our mission is to help inspire each and every one of our gypsy tribe to create a home and wardrobe they truly love.” A globe-trotters emporium of vintage-inspired treasures from Morocco, India and China blended with a relaxed Boho vibe. Mackay’s Gypsy and the Bowerbird brings exotic colours and styles from souks and bazaars for you to treasure in your own home.

Satndeph Claire

Owned by sisters-in-law, Steph and Claire, the interior enthusiasts snapped up Gypsy and the Bowerbird when it went on the market in 2017. They quickly went to work expanding the product range to suit their unique style. “We stock a unique mix of furniture, homewares, fashion and kids décor. Our style is a little eclectic in that we have a combination of Boho, Scandi, and rustic-vintage. We stock a beautiful Dutch furniture line, HK Living, whom we are the exclusive retailer in the region, as well as one-off antique pieces from India, Morocco, and China. Our small range of clothing, leather footwear and accessories are always popular, along with our selection of handmade ceramics and décor from Australian artisans,” Steph said. Once located on Evans Avenue in North Mackay, Gypsy and the Bowerbird has spread its wings and soared into a new retail site in Mackay’s CBD. The business needed to expand to allow for a larger range of furniture due to increased interest from customers. The prime location on the corner of MacAlister and Victoria Streets will host the homewares store along with a specialty coffee shop and deli called The Deli Nook by local business, Plattered Up. Claire commented, “We wanted to create a social hub for our customers, where they can grab a coffee, browse our treasures and take home some gourmet deli items. We love the feel and aesthetic of our new store, it’s light, bright and spacious with lovely window frontage.” The sisters-in-law moved from New Zealand’s Whangarei 10 years ago and have raised their families in Mackay. Claire has two daughters aged 9 and 5, while Steph has three sons, 6, 4 and 2. They have one full-time employee in the business which allows them to balance work with looking after their children. Steph said, “I had been a stay at home mum for four years and my youngest was only 7-monthsold when we bought the business. I was worried about juggling life as a mum and owning a business with three small children, but knew I needed to follow my passions to be the mum I want my children to look up to.” The ladies are planning a buying trip to Marrakesh later this year to expand the range of homewares and furniture on offer, bringing interesting interior options to Mackay. “There is no store in Mackay and surrounds that shares our same style. We aspire to be unique to provide our gypsy tribe with one-off showpieces for their homes, without them having to travel.” Photography By Clique Photography & Media www.corelife.com.au 49

Ria Richards ELK HOUSE OF HAIR

As most working-mums can empathise with, one of the biggest fears for women returning to the workforce after having kids, is missing important moments. It’s one of the aspects of striving for work / life balance that can leave us riddled with guilt, when realistically, we’re far too harsh on ourselves. Hairdresser and business owner of Elk House of Hair, Ria Richards, understands the societal pressure of trying to be the perfect mum, but she says that women need to take time to be kinder to themselves. “Getting the work / family balance right is one of the most challenging aspects of running a business while raising a family. There’s so much going on in today’s hectic lifestyle you worry you’re missing important moments. But the key for me has been to become very organised and thankfully I have an amazing husband who is incredibly helpful and supportive,” she said. Elk House of Hair is located on Evans Road in North Mackay and has a reputation for quality and experience. “We have four senior hairdressers and are in the process of hiring our first school-based apprentice. Between the four of us, we have a combined experience of 53 years in the industry, so our clients know they are getting quality advice and experience,” Ria said. Ria has owned the business for more than two years and constantly evolves to stay on top of new trends and best practice. She also stocks a range of quality haircare and makeup for those seeking a little luxury in their beauty routine. “People know us for our signature brand, Divines, which is a zero-carbon footprint company dedicated to both beautiful results and the environment. We have recently started stocking the lovely brand, Fabuloso as well as popular Cloud 9 straighteners. Our new makeup brand is Youngblood, well-known for being comprised of pure minerals so it’s one of the few brands that is great for your skin while achieving flawless results.” Despite being in the beauty game, Ria isn’t scared to get her hands dirty. As a mother-of-two, she takes her family into nature as often as possible for quality family time. “You’ll usually find me near the water or somewhere on a trail in the bush. I love paddle boarding and swimming, working out at the gym or roughing it camping with the family as well as the occasional motorbike ride,” she said. Her plans for the business are expansion as her client base grows, but with equal emphasis on spending more time with her family to strive for balance.

ST CATH’S “Young people deserve the very best mentors, to hear their voice, and to empower them to be agents of change.” Mel Scherwitzel wasn’t a brilliant A-grade student growing up, but her passion for learning came from a work ethic instilled by her parents, who would tell her, “Be the best you can be, regardless of what you want to be.” This advice encouraged her to look inward, challenge herself and not settle for complacency. Her experiences with teachers wasn’t particularly positive as a young student, one even going as far as telling her that she would never amount to anything. When she reflected back on how different her school experiences might have been, had she had a teacher who took the time to listen and encourage her, she was motivated to be the change that she wanted to see in the industry. Not one to let the opinions of others stifle her passions though, her main love was music and she spent many years in high school choirs, orchestras and string ensembles. Her mother spent a long time saving to buy Mel a violin, which she still treasures today. She pursued this passion into university, studying a Bachelor of Music. At this stage, teaching hadn’t entered her mind and the goal was to play in a professional orchestra. She fell in love and was engaged at 19, changing her plans for travel and performance. After completing her degree in music, she studied a Bachelor of Arts majoring in English, German Language and Maths. It was in her final year of university where she realised her strength for mentoring others, deciding that she could help to shape the future of young people as a teacher. With a love of learning and dedication to guiding and empowering youth, the Whitsundays welcomes Mel as the new Principal of St Catherine’s Catholic College; who better to shape the future of the next generation. She commented, “My passion for education leadership has been a natural progression that has emerged from simple classroom practice and mentoring peers in best practices. “I am a lifelong learner, so I continued in my tertiary studies completing a Master of Education (Literacy and Curriculum) at Deakin University in Victoria. I then undertook further studies with Master of Education in Educational Leadership and Administration. My final Master Degree is in Theology which I undertook at University of Newcastle, in NSW. “Right now, I am focusing on my role as a Principal and really enjoying this journey.” She credits the previous educational career opportunities she has had for empowering her to develop initiatives and grow as an educational leader. As an educator, she has taught a number of subjects across all age groups and held a number of leadership positions before moving to the Whitsundays; including Dean of Students, Head of Curriculum, Deputy Principal and now Principal. This varied experience is welcome with St Catherine’s Catholic College entering its first ever year as a Prep to Year12 College. “Our staff are committed to continuous improvement and professional growth, to ensure they deliver authentic, engaging and innovative learning experiences for our students. We are developing new policies, procedures and processes to reflect our new position as a College on one site,” she said. As a woman in a leadership role, Mel says that it’s more about vision, trust, support and the ability to make a positive difference than focusing on gender achievement. “Young people need to have outstanding role models and strong leaders, available to them in the form of both men and women. I hope both male and female students won’t look so much at my gender but rather at the quality of person I am, the leadership I bring to the school and the relationships I form.”

Take a step back in time, to when road-trips were a cherished and rare family outing. When ladies would don their finest frock and gentlemen wore a hat and tie. When taking your time to admire the scenery was the norm because the drive was as much a part of the adventure as the destination. You don’t have to be getting married to enjoy the romance of a Hot Rod. As Rachel Bott, co-owner of Whitsunday Hot Rod Tours explains, they offer tailored trips to unique destinations for any occasion. “It’s becoming more popular to create lifetime memories in your own backyard. We offer a unique experience that many people have never had, cruising ‘topless’ along the country roads to see your Whitsundays and your Mackay like you’ve never seen it before. “Popular destinations include Conway, Dingo and Hideaway Bay beaches, or lunch at Cape Gloucester. We collaborate with local catering companies if you want to include a picnic to take to the beach, or to the rainforest. We even have collaborations with hair and makeup artists and a photographer to make a full occasion of the day – perfect for proposals, girl’s day out, couples and birthday surprises,” Rachel said. She co-owns the business with her husband, Lucas, whose passion for classic cars sparked the dream. Both have other jobs outside of the tour business, but Rachel is choosing to scale-back her administration position with a consulting company to give her more time to expand the Hot Rod Tours. “I look after the books and the marketing while Lucas looks after all the maintenance and upgrades on the vehicles. I also work four-days-per-week doing administration for consultants / insurance assessors. It’s been a hectic few weeks since the devastating flooding in Townsville and further inland.

Rachel Bott WHITSUNDAY HOT ROD TOURS

“Whitsunday Hot Rod Tours is becoming more popular, so I have scaled back one day per week to dedicate more time to the business and they are very flexible when I do tours during the week. I would like to expand the offering to visiting Cruise Ships and let people know that we’re here for all moments, not just weddings, and we are happy to run tours from Mackay,” Rachel said. Whitsunday Hot Rod Tours has three classic cars for hire, two are available now while the third, a 1930’s Ford Sedan, is currently undergoing its restoration and should be available for the wedding season late in 2019. Not only are the cars immaculate, Rachel ensures the service is top-notch to match, providing complementary Champagne and dressing in theme to match either the occasion or the era of the vehicle. Celebrate moments that matter and take the time to enjoy the ride of your life, with Whitsunday Hot Rod Tours.

Gabi Harding

PEACH AND PEAR SHARING THE WEALTH

With what you get you make a living, but what you give will make a life. Gabi Harding is at a stage in her life where the benefits of giving outweigh those of the need to make more money. As a successful business woman, she believes that raising others up and helping those in need is equally as important as striving for your own financial success. “Perhaps it’s my age, but there’s only so much we can achieve financially that satisfies us on a personal level. What I give to others helps them more than it would help me. By supporting others, giving them a hand-up and dedicating our time to those who need it, I believe the effect reaches further into the community than we realise,” Gabi said. Gabi is the creator of Peach and Pear Catering, a boutique catering service which has garnished a reputation for perfectly presented platters and grazing tables throughout the Whitsundays. She also owns a 200-acre property at Dalrymple Heights with her husband, Mick. The couple were fortunate to escape the Eungella bushfires unscathed, but rallied together community support to deliver 80 bales of feed to neighbours who had lost paddocks of grazing pasture. This is only one of many gestures which filled Gabi’s heart with joy during 2018 and Gabi hopes to contribute as much or more to the community this year. The first being Ronald McDonald House, whose cause has helped many of Gabi’s friends who have children with childhood cancers. “I believe that Ronald McDonald House does a great job in keeping families together during these tough times. When a child is going through treatment, mum or dad shouldn’t be on their own or paying for expensive accommodation.” Gabi recently discovered the Whitsunday Suicide Prevention Network through a friend whose heart is close to the cause. “This was both a business decision and one of friendship, to be able to support a great friend in her personal struggle, and back her through The Whitsunday Suicide Prevention Network. The rate of suicide is so high in the Whitsundays, this was a way I could help the community on a far-reaching scale. I believe that the more we become aware and the more we become comfortable talking about it, then more lives may be saved.” Supporting and lifting the spirits of women in need is a cause close to Gabi’s heart, so she was excited to join forces with The Flower Hut and Share the Dignity to collect handbags for the cause, It’s in the Bag. She is also empowering the next generation of women by sponsoring a local teenage cricket star, to help her shine in a largely male-dominated sport. “Keyra Smith is definitely one to watch as a future star in cricket! I met her mum through business and am helping with Keyra’s travel costs to get to a national tournament being held in Melbourne in July, representing Queensland in the U17 team. She plays locally for the Proserpine Junior Cricket League and in Mackay’s U16 and is enlisted in the Queensland Talent Pathway,” Gabi said. If we all took as much time to give as what we do to take, imagine how great the world would be.

PRACTICE MANAGER CHELSEA COOKE

DENTAL ASSISTANT APRIL PITTENDRIGH

Making the transition from ten years in the travel industry to Practice Manager at Smilemakers Whitsunday, Chelsea is excited to embrace her new career path.

Originally from Noosa, April came to the Whitsundays to visit her parents and never returned! That was four years ago and since then she has enjoyed developing her skills as a dental assistant.

Pursuing this new direction has involved learning about a totally new industry but the care and customer focus from her previous career remains the same.

April’s passion for dental health started when she was a child. Her mum took her to the dentist religiously every six months and she wore braces twice. During both experiences April was always fascinated with the processes.

“Taking care of our patients is my number one priority, along with learning something new every day,” said Chelsea. In her spare time Chelsea enjoys Scuba Diving or planning her next overseas trip, she also dedicates her life to her family and friends who she describes as her life and soul.

Amazed by how a smile can transform a person’s life as well as their physical look, April loves the cosmetic side of dentistry. Witnessing how a dental procedure can create a total transformation of their confidence and outlook on life inspires her and fills her with joy. “Everyone deserves to smile,” said April.

Amie Chalmers ADAM AND EVE HAIR

“I believe that a strong team dynamic plays a huge part in business success.” Entering her fourth year of business, Amie Chalmers has made the leap from a leader-inlearning to an inspirational mentor. She spent the first two years in business gaining valuable advice from successful business women and now is supporting other women to achieve their goals. She is blessed with a hard-working and supportive team in her salon, Adam and Eve Hair, and says that being surrounded by strong and like-minded women helps her to be the best person she can. “Emily is in her last year as an apprentice and is succeeding in leaps and bounds. She is attending the best hair college in Queensland and dives into any challenge I present her with; a testament to her drive to succeed.

“Cynitta was a salon owner before joining our team so we are privileged to gain someone with her level of skill, service and work ethic. Her move to Airlie Beach was a life-changing decision, but I’ve seen her blossom into an even more confident and beautiful person. She continues to precede her passion for immaculate hairdressing,” Amie said. She is also grateful of a business network of women in the Whitsundays who support and encourage each other’s drive. “For such a small town, we have a lot of power women! I am very honored to rub shoulders with so many successful business women whilst we share the trials and tribulations of business. I don’t think anyone understands a woman in business like another woman in business!” As well as kicking goals in business, Amie has undertaken an inspirational and personal

weight loss journey, losing an impressive 55kg in a quest for a healthier, happier existence. “It’s changed my life, mindset and even my work ethic for the better. I go to the gym most mornings and I start my day in the salon beaming with endorphins. My clients and friends alike have all been very supportive and excited by my successes in this journey of losing 55kgs. My mind is clearer, my gut health is better and all around, I am so much happier,” she said. She celebrated this achievement in the best way she knows how, with an epic music festival in Bali, celebrating the New Year in style. “With one of my best friends by my side, we danced the New Year in at the VIP section of a music festival held at the famous Finns Beach Club on the beach at Canggu. This epic start to the year has set the tone for how I intend to live, 2019 will be my best year yet!”

Cruise Whitsundays THE SEA, ONCE IT CASTS ITS SPELL HOLDS ONE IN ITS NET OF WONDER FOREVER

LTR: Leshia Krushka, Cait Fleming, Renee Branton-Brown and Kerry Bopping

Traditionally, the marine industry is a male dominated domain, populated by salty sea dogs and hardy fellows. That is until you experience the modern landscape of Cruise Whitsundays, which has an all female sales and marketing team at the helm. These incredible women share a passion for boating and a love of the Whitsundays, which, along with their skills and experience, is the driving force behind the success of one of the Whitsunday Island’s premier boating companies. We meet the inspiring women that create a magic team.

RENÉE BRANTON-BROWN As the energetic new leader of the Cruise Whitsundays Sales and Marketing Team, Canadian born Renee is thrilled to see more and more women succeeding in the marine industry. “There is definitely a change happening in the cruise and tourism industry. Today, more women are smashing through glass ceilings and moving into key leadership roles. I believe women are bringing new ways of thinking and a new energy to the business,” said Renee. “We're a team of strong women with a variety of backgrounds and experiences. We support one another and think outside the box.” 58 www.corelife.com.au

With a background in the Cruise Line Industry, Renee spent 13 years travelling the world, basing herself in Florida for seven of those years. She would regularly travel from Miami to Sydney on business and during one of those trips she met and fell in love with a handsome Australian man. Moving to Australia permanently was an easy choice for Renee as she has Australian heritage. Initially moving to Sydney, she began working for Cruise Whitsundays parent company, Journey Beyond. On one fortuitous work trip, Renee discovered Airlie Beach and the Whitsunday Islands for the first time. It was here she fell in love all over again.

CAIT FLEMING Showing the rest of the world her amazing office (AKA the Whitsunday Islands and Great Barrier Reef) and watching visitors discover the majesty of our natural surrounds is one of the purest pleasures for Cait. “People save for years and sometimes only see the reef once in their life and we get to be there for that. It's amazing!” She said. One of the rare few ‘true locals’ Cait was born in Airlie Beach, moving away briefly when she went to study at university, then returning to her much-loved local town. A place she is proud to call home.

She soon convinced her handsome Australian husband, Justin, to leave his own business behind to start a new life in the Whitsundays. The couple have a collection of three cute cuddly fur babies and love exploring the outdoors on last minute un-planned adventures whenever they can.

Here she met and married another local boy, Luke and together they have two fur babies.

Favourite Tour? Great Barrier Reef Adventure

Overall, the company has an equal split, men to women, so it is a fair and inclusive environment to work in as a female, which Cait thrives in.

Favourite Activity? Riding in our Semi- Submarine Favourite destination? Hardy Reef or Whitsunday Island

Cait is a long-term member of the Cruise Whitsundays team and has recently been promoted to Sales and Marketing Co-ordinator, a role that is multi-faceted, challenging but immensely rewarding.

“There's lot of opportunity across all the departments, which means no end to the development and learning opportunities!” Said Cait.

She was only 19 at the time and subsequently spent many years working in the gaming industry in her hometown of Sydney, visiting the Whitsundays as often as she could. On each visit she would take a tour and watch the crew. Seeing how passionate and happy they were in their jobs made her wish for that sort of lifestyle too. It wasn’t long before Kerry took a leap of faith and moved to the area. Here, she started a new life, one where she feels like the luckiest girl on the planet working as the Local Sales Executive for Cruise Whitsundays. “My job entails, taking people out from here and all over the world, showing-off our most

s k r a M e i n La FIGHTING FOR YOU LOAN MARKET

“It’s exciting growing my business in a beautiful part of the world within a well-respected community.” Leaving snowy peaks for sun-drenched beaches, Lanie Marks packed her bags and travelled across the world to experience Australia. A career in hospitality management drew her to the world-famous Whitsundays and a visa sponsorship allowed her to stay. But going full-circle, Lanie has found herself back in the financial game, a career she originally had after graduating from university in Canada. The opportunity came through Loan Market’s sister company, Ray White Real Estate. “I have seen Airlie Beach grow and prosper over the 15 years I’ve been here, so when an opportunity arose to enter the real estate industry, I took up the challenge. Ray White had acquired a rent roll, so I began my career with them as a property manager. They are a wonderful business to work for, so I began to look at opportunities to further my career within the brand. When I saw that Loan Market was a sister company, it was a logical next step given my prior experience in finance,” Lanie said. She is a licensed mortgage broker and Franchisee for Loan Market, a family-owned business which negotiates with the big banks and specialist lenders to find the best deals in finance for everyday people.

Photography By Norina Jane

Lanie commented, “Loan Market is built on a foundation of history, integrity and family value. The company is family owned, with qualities which are evident in the way the business is structured. New brokers have an incredible support network, I have the support of brokers across Queensland to assist in securing deals with lenders for clients.” Lanie loves that the flexibility of her job allows her to meet clients at a time that best fits into their lifestyle. “Recently, a real estate agent told me her client would like to talk, but he had a flight to catch, so would call from the airport. It turns out I was on the same flight, so we met in the airport lounge for a meeting!” Lanie’s father is from Sweden, so regular overseas trips were normal for her growing up. She caught the travel bug early and has a particular passion for ziplining. Some of her favourite experiences include the Klatring Pa Grensen in Norway, the La Belle Verte Zipline Tour in Noumea, New Caledonia and is looking forward to ziplining on the cruise ship, Symphony of the Seas in January next year. She even has a zipline in her own backyard! “I am really into the thrill of the heights and the challenge of the climb.” Her fur baby is a giant Maremma Sheepdog named Molly. The next time you think about finance, chat to Lanie for access to exclusive home loan offers for a competitive deal. Talking to a person who gets it really makes a difference.

PD LAW The legal industry is changing. With disruptive technology appearing daily, it requires new thinking, new management styles, and new service delivery. With an ownership and management structure wholly different from the traditional law firm partnership model, PD Law was created with innovation and change at its core. Central to this, and reflecting these values is co-founder/ owner and CEO, Mel Cox. “Our model gives everyone a career path if they want it, regardless of their background or skillset. There’s no traditional hierarchy here, and we look for talent in all its forms.” With that sort of foundation, it’s no surprise PD Law has attracted, and grown in-house, some formidable talent. Like any industry, law has its show-ponies, but then there are people with real grit. The quietly determined types who just get it done. Conveyancing manager Bernie Gunders is the latter. Property transactions are high stakes and sometimes everything is quite literally on the line.

“Things change daily, sometimes hourly! We try to act as a filter for our clients, giving them time to think before reacting. When things get hectic, the last thing they want is their law firm firing off bullets when cool heads should prevail. That’s what our clients rely on when they engage us.” Elizabeth Smith is one of PD Law’s natural leaders, and with a resume like hers it’s no wonder she’s highly regarded in the industry as a criminal defence lawyer. After 5 years as a civil prosecutor, Elizabeth joined PD Law, building its criminal law division from scratch. An extensive knowledge of the court process and advocacy skills has also lent itself to her segue into commercial and civil litigation. Elizabeth manages a motivated team of lawyers, graduates and para-legals, instilling in them a real sense of purpose.

up with a powerful mentor in Elizabeth has supercharged Ali’s career. Although every lawyer likes to think (and claim!) they’re passionate about the law, or their job, when you actually experience working with someone who is passionate like Ali, you realise the true meaning of the term. 2018 was a big year for Avril Cowarn, relocating from Hobart to the Whitsundays to head up the family law team, where she was welcomed by extreme heat, then extreme wet, Avril’s now ready for anything.

“I think a strong sense of justice is a big part of choosing this career. People place their livelihood in your hands. You need to be courageous.”

With a firm belief that litigation is not the only answer, Avril has further trained and gained accreditation as a family dispute resolution practitioner, setting her apart from traditional family lawyers. Given the notoriously overcrowded family court calendar, and in an environment where some lawyers prefer court action without setting realistic client expectations, Avril’s approach is a welcome change, and very effective.

At the heart of Elizabeth’s team is Ali Ladd. A rare find, Ali combines tenacity with competitive drive, leaving no question unanswered. Teaming

free, you’re privileged to have them. “Probably the coolest thing is that my role requires me to engage with everyone in the office, touching base often. I’m proud to be a part of a team that embraces change and pulls in the same direction.” After being admitted as a lawyer in her native Sweden, PD Law was lucky to find Emma Damgaard a couple of years ago here in the Whitsundays. Looking ultimately to gain admission as a lawyer in Queensland, Emma has in the meantime used her professional skills to carve out a niche in the property development team. “I can honestly say I didn’t expect my legal career would take me here! Although Australian and Swedish laws are obviously going to differ, many fundamental aspects remain the same. I’m enjoying the depths we go to when advising on development matters. It’s rewarding to see the difference we can make with early thorough advice.” Reception manager Amanda Haskell came ready made with enthusiasm and a drive to

learn. With an eye for efficiency, she’s realised operational efficiencies that others never knew existed. All this while smiling and cooking up the odd storm on our Taco Tuesdays! When seeking out a career, Amanda’s view is that people shouldn’t be applying for every role that they see, but rather finding something that makes a difference for themselves and their team. Her decision to join PD Law ticked these boxes, and the business is far better for it. For business owners, some employment opportunities are just pure luck. While interviewing Vanessa’s Aspinall’s fiancé Lucas for a position at PD Law, Vanessa was invited to sit in on his interview (It was the weekend after all, and we didn’t want her sitting out in reception alone!). After Lucas had sufficiently impressed, Vanessa and the bosses started talking, and one thing led to another! Vanessa is grace under pressure, and when things get hot (and they invariably do) she remains calm when needed most. Maturity appears in different ways. In the case of residential conveyancer Lila McGuire, she

displays more maturity than most other 21 year-olds. Starting out managing reception, Lila indicated a desire to push for a career in conveyancing and so was given the opportunity. Starting out, Lila was alive to the fact that the role requires extensive knowledge and experience. As such, her role is constantly moderated to run lock step with her gains in knowledge and experience. Mel Cox: “We don’t do the sink or swim approach. The last thing we want is to offer someone a career path, only to have them break on day one. We’re empowering Lila to go the distance with us and enjoy it on the way. Although I can’t recall Lila taking the stand-uppaddle boards yet so maybe she needs to enjoy things a bit more!” It’s obvious PD Law is a powerful and tight-knit operation. Mel again: “The rewarding things for me are the sense of culture and support we’ve developed. It’s cliché, but culture is vital. It’s taken a few iterations, but we’ve got the balance right now. I feel privileged to work with such a strong group of women.”

Nurses of Mackay Base Hospital Saving lives with care, compassion and a gentle smile is matched with medical knowledge, training and teamwork at Mackay Base Hospital. We meet three nurses, all at different stages in their career, to get a glimpse into their lives.

BARB NICOL Time as a nurse: 11 years As a daughter of a nurse who was a single mum, growing up Barb spent most of her weekends in the aged care facility. Here she would call bingo, chat to the residents and make them cups of tea. For Barb it was a natural progression to becoming a registered nurse. “I couldn’t image myself doing anything else. I love working with people and that every day is different,” said Barb. Barb has two dogs, two cats and a loving partner. They live near the beach and often have friends round who they entertain poolside. Most memorable moment as a nurse I worked in the same emergency department for 5 years and a gorgeous 4-year-old girl would often come in post chemo with neutropenia, she had lost all of her hair due to the chemo. The first time I met her she put the tourniquet on herself and told me which was her best vein to use to put a cannula in. This broke my heart that a child knew about these things. 64 www.corelife.com.au

Then I didn’t see her for about 12 months. Then, on the day of my last shift at this hospital, this girl came running up to me with gorgeous long red hair saying “Hi Barb”. At first I didn’t recgonise her, then it dawned on me this was the same gorgeous girl I had cared for with neutropenia. She was so vibrant, looking fabulous and beaming ear to ear. She asked me “do you like my hair?” It is moments like this that remind me why I became a nurse!

KATE PRIVILEGGIO

SEANA CLARKE

“I wanted to choose a career that is challenging, interesting and makes a difference in people’s lives on a daily basis,” said Kate.

Time as a nurse: 39 years A staunch advocate for nursing, midwife Seana, loves making a difference in people’s lives. Even after 39 years she is continuing to learn, constantly updating her knowledge and skill base which keeps her job fresh and interesting. One of her most memorable experiences is working with a health care team in a rural hospital. “We provided care to a close-knit community, making a difference in people’s lives from birth through to aged care,” said Seana. When she takes her nurses hat off at the end of the day, Seana is proud mum to two grown-up sons and grandmother to a little boy. She also has a dog and a cat who are part of the family. In her spare time she loves to swim, water ski and practice Yoga.

Time as a nurse: First year Recently graduated, Kate is experiencing the fast pace of Mackay Base Hospital for the first time. Over the course of the next six months she will be working on rotation in the Specialist Outpatients Department as part of the Post Graduate Program.

Coming from a large family of six siblings, plus three dogs and a cat, Kate is comfortable with a little chaos which certainly helps with her chosen career! In her spare time she enjoys watching a movie or catching up with friends. What is the most challenging moment for you so far in your career? When I was a student a patient passed away unexpectedly whilst I was doing daily hygiene tasks on them. I had to notify the family who were waiting outside of the patient’s room. It was quite difficult to let them know before they walked back into the room.

n e w o B z Me You don’t need to travel to New York for Breakfast at Tiffany’s to snap up their super exclusive sunglasses. In fact, you don’t even need to travel out of town. Bright Eyes Sunglasses Airlie Beach is one of only a handful of stockists in Queensland to sell the designer Tiffany & Co. shades. The lady bringing these labels to town is Mez Bowen, owner of Bright Eyes Sunglasses, Airlie Beach. Being a business-owner and mother is more than a handful enough, but that doesn’t stop Mez from striving for success in other areas as well as chipping in with community organisations. One cause which provides safety to other women is Zonta; a global organisation of professionals empowering women worldwide through service and advocacy. Mez was introduced by her neighbour and she says she hasn’t looked back since. “We have an amazing group of women in our Whitsunday Zonta, I can’t believe I hadn’t joined sooner. At Christmas, we prepare pamper packs for the ladies in the refuge and participate in Adopt A Family. Our sewing group gets together regularly to make breast cushions for women who have had mastectomies, and also drainage and drip bags for surgery patients; among a lot of other causes for women we support,” she said. Mez is also the Treasurer on the board for the Whitsunday Steiner School, which Mez hopes will become an accredited school soon. “We are incredibly enthusiastic about starting the school in this region, but we haven’t been able to find a suitable location. We’re still optimistic about finding a great place to work from soon,” she said. A romantic at heart, Mez has nearly completed a celebrancy course and hopes to be in a position to legally marry couples later this month. “I was at a friend’s wedding last year and I thought, ‘it’s an amazing thing to be an important part of someone’s special day,’ so I looked up celebrancy courses and was signed up that evening.” Now that her daughter, Piper, is transitioning from baby to toddler, Mez says that it’s slightly easier juggling mother-hood and being a business woman. Her husband, Muz, works on a roster in the mines, so for half of the month Mez is looking after both her business and child solo.

“Piper and the business come before trivial things like having a tidy house. She won’t look back and think, ‘oh thank goodness we had a tidy house,’ she will look back and think, ‘I’m so glad my mum made that time for me to have fun.” Mez is also thankful for the encouragement of her husband, who motivates her to aim high, no matter how daunting the task. “I definitely couldn’t do this without the support of my amazing husband; he’s always helping me to chase my dreams, and every time I get another hair-brained idea about adding more on my plate his first question is ‘what can I do to help you.’ “He’s the most selfless man I know, and he’s bloody cute too.”

“Piper turns three next month so now she’s at the age where she can actually tell me what’s wrong. It does take a lot of time-management and I do struggle at times, I certainly sympathise with any solo-parent out there, doing it on your own is tough.

Aina: As well as working full-time, Aina is studying a bachelor’s degree in psychology. “Working with big teams require a lot of people skills, empathy and understanding. A few years ago, I thought it would be interesting to learn a bit more about psychology to help overcome challenges in the workplace.” Alex: While white water rafting in Thailand, a large green snake fell out of a tree and hit Alex on the head, falling into their raft and wrapping itself around Alex’s legs. “My saviour was one of the raft instructors, who managed to flip the snake out of the raft and into the river with his www.corelife.com.au paddle. Needless to say, I haven’t been white water rafting since.” 67

g n i l r e t S y l l a S Benny Ji and MIRAGE WHITSUNDAYS The best people to advise on unforgettable travel experiences are those who love to travel themselves. This is what makes Sally Sterling and Benny Ji welcome women in business for Mirage Whitsundays, providing guests with expert advice and sterling service.

BENNY

“Benny is a little gem; a happy and light-hearted joy to work with, we have a lot of laughs! Thank you, Benny, for all the help you provide for us when we need it in reception, and all the amazing marketing work you do for Mirage.”

Sally commented that the tourism industry is a fantastic way to see the most beautiful places in the world. “I was lucky enough to begin my career in the beautiful seaside town of Lorne on the Great Ocean Road in Victoria. I worked my way up to Assistant Manager for a large resort, which was a challenging yet extremely rewarding role. I learnt a lot about myself and how to lead, support and coach a team to help them reach their potential. From there, I spent the rest of my career in Noosa, Hamilton Island and now here with Mirage Whitsundays as the resort’s Assistant Front Office Manager.”

SALLY

Benny also loves to travel and was attracted to the Whitsundays after living in Brisbane. “When I arrived in the Whitsundays for the first time, I was totally attracted by the incredible scenery here. The region has lovely beaches and the amazing Heart Reef surrounded by the Great Barrier Reef. That was when I decided to work here. “Whenever I have any spare time, I like to travel, and I’m extremely passionate about seeing new places and trying new experiences. Whenever I do anything truly unforgettable, I write about it on my blog to share the experience with others who would also like to be there,” she said. As Mirage’s Marketing Assistant, Benny is not only breaking glass ceilings as an executive, but also breaks the language barrier for Chinese guests. “I am in charge of promoting Mirage to both domestic and international markets, as well as assisting VIP customers, especially from China, to eliminate their language barrier. Receiving their gratitude and a big smile to make their travel experience easier helps me to feel full of achievement,” Benny said.

“I was blessed with such wonderful female mentors along the way; support and encouragement is an absolute must. It motivates you and gives you a sense of drive. I also take great delight in guiding others from my own experience, there is something very rewarding about seeing the people you have mentored achieve exciting things,” she said. DID YOU KNOW? For many years, Sally’s babysitter was Australia’s famous singer-songwriter, Vanessa Amorosi! Benny believes that if you have faith in your own ability, you can steer the destiny of your own life. “If you love what you do and follow your heart, you may not find the answer straight away, but one day you will achieve your dream.”

“Sally has really strong communication skills that allow her to provide outstanding customer service, even when she is fixing a problem. She is a task-oriented person who takes responsibility to get the job done, I admire that.” Photography By Norina Jane

Sally believes that empowerment and a sense of purpose is what drives you to succeed.

The Women

Julie Whitcombe

Andrea Brannan

MASTERMYNE NON-EXECUTIVE DIRECTOR

FINANCE MANAGER COMPLIANCE & MASTERTEC

“From my first meetings with the Mastermyne Board and management team, I was struck by the authenticity and pride with which they talk about their people and their culture. There is a core belief in the business that good business comes from good people, and they focus on creating a support network that allows people to achieve their full potential no matter what their personal circumstances. Women with that kind of support can achieve anything they choose to focus on.”

“One thing I quickly learned at Mastermyne is that nothing stays the same, there are always new challenges to face and improvements to make, this keeps my job interesting and rewarding. I often say to the younger members of our team they are in a very fortunate position working for Mastermyne, as they get exposure to both financial and management accounting disciplines, this can be quite rare in business.”

Julie Whitcombe’s career took on a shape of its own, a path completely different to what she planned it would be when she left university. With a willingness to learn and a curious spirit allowing her to give anything a go, her professional experience includes graduating as a mining engineer, strategic management consulting, accounting and auditing, deal advisory and then into the oil and gas industry. One of the relationships she made along the way opened the door to an opportunity with Mastermyne. She has three degrees including a CA and a Masters, has an Executive role in a public company, was the first woman appointed to the Mastermyne Board and is raising four children. Yet, Julie says that she’s no more of a superwoman than any other working mother. “I find advice hard to give because everyone’s personal circumstances are so different, but for myself I focus pretty relentlessly on staying true to my values. Learning to manage yourself can be the most challenging and valuable skill of all,” she said. Her children provide valuable perspective when the corporate world can feel overwhelming. “One afternoon feeling very stressed, my two-and-a-half-year-old asked me why I was so cranky. I told her I didn’t like it when she was being naughty. She sagely patted me on the cheek and told me that I just needed to try harder. My kids constantly remind me life goes on regardless.” Julie believes leaders have a responsibility to create a culture which fosters opportunity based on capability and achievement without bias to gender. “That requires honest reflection and regular challenge at the leadership table to ensure culture is in a healthy place. I am a believer in a dual focus on removing barriers and empowering individuals. This allows people to achieve their best selves, which naturally creates opportunity.”

Locally born and bred in Mackay, Andrea Brannan has experienced enriching and varied career opportunities in her home region. After completing her degree in accounting, she gained mining industry knowledge at a local coal terminal as well as both open-cut and underground mines. It gave her valuable experience to become an integral part of the Mastermyne team. “With my hand on my heart I can honestly say, I am learning as much now at this stage in my career as the day I first commenced. “Whilst many people might view accounting as a routine and mundane discipline, my days are anything but. In my role I deal with both financial and management accounting. Hence on a daily basis I work on a broad range of activities ranging from compliance tasks such as liaising with auditors, handling corporate tax matters to providing analytical support to our project managers to help improve the profitability of our operations,” she said. As a mother-of-two, Andrea’s passions outside of work revolve around her family. Her children are talented swimmers so swimming season consists of a lot of travel to competitions. She says that having a supportive husband makes working while raising a family more achievable, and has advice for other women wanting to define their career path. “Firstly, find what you are passionate about. Your work will never be a chore if you are working in a field you are passionate with and enjoy. Find yourself a support network, whether it’s other women with whom you can share your experiences, or just someone who knows how the industry works and can give you sound advice. Lastly, don’t be afraid to ask questions. This is how you will truly gain an understanding of the business. It will also help you to build relationships, which I believe is a key fundamental to ensuring a successful and enjoyable career.”

Deborah Hatte

Ruth Ey

CIVIL / PROJECT ENGINEER

HUMAN RESOURCES MANAGER OPERATIONS

“Every day there are more and more women joining the engineering and mining sectors. I believe that the more women who are encouraged to give it a try, the more equal the industry will naturally become.”

“Mastermyne has supported me to study my Diploma of Positive Psychology. This is an exciting opportunity to take HR out of the dark ages, traditionally focusing on improving people’s weaknesses, to instead place attention on people’s strengths and how to build an environment where people thrive. I love taking these emerging concepts and building them into practical applications for our industry.”

As a graduate civil engineer, Deborah Hatte arrived in Central Queensland near the beginning of the mining boom. Over the next twelve years she went from knowing nothing about the mining construction industry to gaining a variety of experiences in a mixture of projects, roles and locations; which has included dam constructions on mine sites, geotechnical investigation and design, and two years in Canada at a large engineering consultancy working onsite at an oil sands mine. “I supervised a geotechnical drilling investigation in northern Alberta. It was the middle of winter and temperatures dropped to -45 degrees. Watching a bottle of drinking water freeze instantly as you walked outside was an eye-opening experience when you are used to Queensland weather,” she said. She also spent two weeks on an off-shore drilling vessel off the coast of Papua New Guinea. “I was appointed as the owner’s engineer, overseeing a below-seabed geotechnical drilling investigation to ultimately provide design details for the construction of a dam on the shore edge. The ship and crew were Dutch, the technical crew were Singaporean, and the general crew were Indonesian. It was a very interesting experience,” Deborah said. In early 2017, an opportunity arose for Deborah to join Mastermyne, where she could assist in its increasing work in feasibility studies and mine projects. She commented, “My husband was already a long-term employee, so I had previous knowledge of their business culture. With two small children, I’m lucky to be able to work from home as much as possible; providing technical reviews, writing reports and undertaking project engineering and management.”

Working as an event manager in Brazil, Ruth Ey was in urgent need of a visa to stay in the country. She took up a position in HR for a mining company in Rio de Janeiro; a move that has opened exciting career pathways. She returned home to Brisbane and worked in the Bowen Basin onsite at an underground mine, where she met her husband. After maternity leave, she was presented with a Mackaybased position with Mastermyne, one which supported professional development as well as future maternity leave. “Mastermyne supported me back to the workplace through two stints of maternity leave, I have flexible work arrangements and was able to return to work after six months and continue breastfeeding bub at work. “My baby girl attended a number of our business planning processes starting from when she was six weeks old, so Mastermyne is a very family friendly place to work. I’m lucky to have a supportive environment where I am made to feel comfortable with working family friendly hours and even breastfeeding in the workplace,” she said. Ruth is part of an exciting ‘Brain Science Project’ where Mastermyne is using Neuroscience and Behavioural Economics to better understand how humans make decisions. “The aim is to transform safety and build leadership capabilities. Being part of this project means I am being trained by leading practitioners and we are working on some ground-breaking stuff. “Being on an executive development plan is a little daunting for me when I’m still getting the hang of being a mother. But with a very supportive husband and workplace, I’m confident that my professional choices and my family commitments can move forward at the same time.”

Dr. Rosariouez Rodrig

BRACES 4U SMILE WITH CONFIDENCE

“Alone we can do so little; together we can do so much.” Working with your spouse can be a tricky game, usually resulting in either Heaven or Hell on Earth. For Dr. Rosario Rodriguez, working with her husband, Gabriel, has reaped rewards both financially and personally. “A strong relationship and successful business relies on being able to separate the two. At work, he’s a business associate while at home he’s my husband. I need to separate work from home to be effective with what I do. “There’s no, ‘I’m the boss’ between us, we both have equally important roles within the business, and that’s how I view every single position at Braces 4 U. We’re not competing with each other, we’re supporting each other to be the best we can be,” Dr. Rosario said. She believes that having the right team and treating everyone equally is a key component to a successful business. “Delegation is important, I trust in the experience and dedication of my team to do their jobs well. I appreciate them for the unique strengths they bring and have a lot of respect for what they do. We’re all part of a puzzle, and when everyone executes their peace of the puzzle it’s a beautiful thing.” Originally from Mexico, she and Gabriel moved to Australia nearly 25 years ago, but Dr. Rosario still has a strong connection with her home country. An advocate for equal opportunity for women and empowering women to be independent and successful, she and her sisters formed a charity to help women, particularly those who have lived with oppression or domestic violence. “In a society where women are often oppressed of abused, it can be hard for them to have the confidence to live life on their own. They would rather stay with a violent partner than support themselves because they lack the support and confidence to make a living. “We teach them a skill, it may be knitting or arts and crafts, or other skills; so they have the opportunity to sell their crafts to make a living for themselves. We want them to feel the freedom and independence they deserve by recognising they can be selfsufficient,” That same confidence is what she loves about her line of work. A new smile brings some people an abundance of happiness after a lifetime of being self-conscious. Dr Rosario explains it’s not too late to get the smile of your dreams. “I hear people say, ‘I’m 30, I’m too old for braces.’ Really? You’ll probably live until you’re older than 80, so would you like to live the next 50 years happier and more confident? It’s never too late. I’ve had patients older than 60 and it’s transformed their lives. Different types of braces have made possible for people to straighten their teeth at any age, it’s not only for teenagers. Seeing the transformation of both the smile and the selfconfidence is why I love my job.” For personalised service and advanced technology to perfect your smile, visit Dr. Rosario at Braces 4U for a lifetime of brighter smiles. 72 www.corelife.com.au

MAITRI, AESTHETICS BY HEIDI “Clear skin starts from within; I love treating skin from the inside out by addressing underlying health issues.”

t t o c t s a E i d i e H

Our skin is the largest organ of our body, so naturally when we don’t look after ourselves internally, it can suffer externally. Heidi Eastcott has had a lifelong passion for fitness, nutrition and health. She previously owned a boxing gym and competed until she had her first child in 2006. She was a registered boxing coach and personal trainer which inspired her to study a Bachelor of Science (Nursing) and a Bachelor of Complimentary Medicine. She moved to the Torres Strait as a teenager where she spent the next 19 years (on and off) and nursed in remote areas on the region’s islands. She moved to Mackay just over a year ago where she set up her own boutique cosmetic injectable and skin clinic, Maitri, Aesthetics by Heidi.

Photography By Clique Photography & Media

“I love people and skin education. Our industry has a habit of pointing out a person’s shortcomings or flaws, rather than celebrate the beauty they already have. I wanted to create a skin clinic with a difference, one which was more focused on taking time with clients and creating solutions for their skin concerns rather than giving them treatments they don’t need. I appreciate honesty and have found this approach valuable for my clients,” Heidi said. The name Maitri (my tree) means, self-love, benevolent, compassionate or two people on the same wave length. “Maitri has your best interest at heart. Cosmetic treatments don’t have to look overdone or fake. A beautiful, natural rejuvenation can be achieved when working with the right injector.” The boutique skin clinic offers a range of exciting treatments for skin rejuvenation. Heidi said, “We do all areas of facial injectables in the clinic; including antiwrinkle, filler and fat dissolving. Permanent fat dissolving is my favourite treatment to do at the moment. “Our newest edition is Plasma Fibroblast treatment, a non-surgical blepharoplasty which addresses aging skin around the eyes, neck and around the mouth. “Our skin care line is Synergie; A medicalgrade, active skin care, that is chemical free and Australian-made. We also offer peels and various other skin treatments.” Heidi and her partner have seven children between then, so Heidi has made it a priority to find time to also look after herself. “Balance is key. I suffer two autoimmune diseases, so exercise and nutrition are vital for making sure I can keep up with the family and keep achieving. I try to juggle as best as I can, but sometimes I’m not quite the superwoman I think I am. As mother’s, we don’t put ourselves first often enough, but we do need to look after ourselves more.” Celebrating her first year in business, Heidi is excited in the growth her business has experienced in a short time. “A big thank you to all our wonderful clients, the support we had received has been overwhelming.” www.corelife.com.au 73

LARA MITTON BEAUTY IS NOT THE FACE; BEAUTY IS A LIGHT IN THE HEART Being beautiful is a radiance that shines from the skin and exudes an aura of kindness, self-confidence and passion for life. These are qualities that Lara Mitton embraces in every aspect of her life, remaining humble, as her success as a beauty queen and swimsuit model takes off. A local girl at heart, Lara was raised in the Whitsundays and went to boarding school in South East Queensland before returning home. When she was little she wanted to be a dog, but fortunately she grew out of that and instead decided to be a Veterinary Nurse. “There are good days and bad days in this line of work, it can be challenging and emotionally draining, but I love it. When we help, it is so rewarding,” said Lara. As a teenager, Lara was a shy girl, and when she was asked to model on the cover of City Life Magazine, she found it a great way to gain self-confidence. She loved the photo shoot and instantly wanted to do it again. From here, Lara decided to enter a beauty pageant. “I was still extremely shy, so it was very out of character for me back then, but the rush of being on stage was exhilarating,” said Lara. Fuelled by a buzz of self-confidence, Lara started entering other competitions and was surprised by how successful she became. “There was a swimsuit pageant called Miss Hawaiian Tropic being held locally which I ended up winning. After this I entered another and another!” Said Lara.

She made it through to the Queensland finals of Miss Universe and won the Miss V8 Supermodel and Swimsuit USA Australia in 2016, sending her to the world final in Punta Cana, Dominican Republic where she made the top 20. Back in Australia, Lara entered the most prestigious swimwear competition, MAXIM Australian Swimwear Model of the Year and placed third. She also won the title of Miss Townsville, which as a local girl, meant a lot to her. “We are pretty lucky to have the biggest pageant prize money up for grabs in Australia here in Townsville. Girls flew from all over Australia to enter, and taking out the title was a huge deal for me,” said Lara. She also flew to Mexico for Swimsuit USA, and despite messing up one of the major scoring components, placed 3rd runner up. “ It was the biggest accomplishment in my pageant life so far!” She said. Despite reaching global acclaim, Lara remains grounded, continuing with her career as a Veterinary Nurse and excited about her upcoming wedding in June. “In 2019 I will be changing from a Miss to a Mrs, which means the world to me.” She said. ANTI AGEING THE COMMON QUESTIONS ANSWERED Heidi Eastcott 1. What is the difference between filler and antiwrinkle? Filler Vs Antiwrinkle Let’s start with antiwrinkle. Currently we have three different brands of products on the market. Each of these are a natural purified protein that is used to relax facial muscles. We can use this product for lines that are evident upon expression, like frown or forehead lines, just to name a few. This product is very safe, with many decades of studies, and used medically in young children. It is also used for medical conditions like hyperhidrosis (excess sweating), migraines and bruxism (jaw clenching). Longevity - 3-4mth (depending on the client and amount used) Filler on the other hand is made from Hyaluronic Acid (HA). There are many brands and this is a product where you get what you pay for. We use this product to rejuvenate, shape and enhance the face, by restoring volume. This HA is found naturally in the body and is plentiful when we are younger. As we age the skin becomes more lax due to the decrease of collagen and elastin, environment, bone loss and genetics all can contribute. We inject HA into different areas of the face, most popular are lips, cheeks and jaw line to create your desired results. HA type filler is safe when used by an experienced injector and is also reversible. Longevity - 6 - 18 mths (depending on the product used, amount and client) 2. What treatments do you have for my double chin? We use a product that is a permanent fat dissolver. Yes permanent! The treatment uses synthesised deoxycholic acid to break down the fat cells and sculpt the chin. The acid is found in the body naturally to aid digestion and absorb fats. This product and procedure has gained momentum due to Khloe Kardashian using it to get her razor sharp jaw line. We use a numbing agent to help avoid discomfort, mark up the area and administer via injection. No cutting or stitches required. the dissolving process happens slowly over a few months which helps ensure the skin retracts slowly. Longevity - Permanent 3. Once i get a treatment do i have to keep doing it? No, not at all. Some people use treatments to feel fresher and slow their ageing by routine visits. Other clients use injectables leading up to special events, photos shoots or just to treat them self. While the product is active the ageing process will slow or the enhancement will be evident. As the body breaks down the product you will slowly start to see fine lines returning. Timing of treatments are totally in your hands. 4. Will my filler look done or fake? Correctly placed filler for rejuvenation should be almost undetectable. This comes down to the choice of filler and the aesthetic eye of the injector. Remember all filler is different from very thin to super thick hence the reason price also varies. One dose or technique dose not suit all. Ensure a long consult with your practitioner to discuss outcomes and make sure you are on the same page.

Latest hearing care tech for Queensland A trip to your audiologist just became a lot more convenient

Y

ou may have heard the saying “The tyranny of distance”, a reference to geographical remoteness. That saying is particulalrly apt in Queensland where there can be hundreds of kilometres between towns access to important services can be limited. I have always wanted Clarity to service as much of this state as possible, to ensure Queenslanders have access to quality hearing care. We have done so by having a big network of visiting sites that we travel to on a regular basis. But of course, that also means that there will be times where we simply aren’t available in those locations. Now with Clarity’s new RemoteCare hearing aid options, we’ll be able to look after

people’s hearing even better. RemoteCare gives you the ability to meet with your audiologist without even being in the same room as them. I could be in Mackay and you could be in Emerald and, using your smartphone I can conduct an

appointment and adjust your devices remotely in real time. Imagine the convenience. While I take great pride in ensuring we visit as many remote locations in Queensland as possible, we don’t get there as often as I would like. With this technology you don’t have to wait until our next trip. Just make an appointment like you normally would and on the day of that appointment you connect with your audiologist remotely. No need to travel hundreds of kilometres, as some of our patients do. We still have to see you face-to-face for the initial assessment and fitting, but after that, most other adjustments and appointments can be done using the option of a

RemoteCare appointment. The technology runs via a smart device app that connects wirelessly with your hearing aid. When it’s time for your appointment you simply open the app and connect with your audiologist. They can then discuss any issue or concerns you have and make adjustments to your devices right there and then. This will allow us to address any concerns our patients may have in between those times we are actually in their community. And that means a step closer to providing the level of service we strive for. Contact us today on 4957 2000 for more information or to arrange an appointment.

WHAT WOMEN WANT WHAT’S IMPORTANT TO WOMEN WHEN IT COMES TO EXERCISE?

1. To find an environment that makes us feel safe and motivated. Somewhere that keeps us inspired on our journeys.
Everyone deserves to live the life they want and, as a coach, I always make sure everyone knows they 100% have the ability to make that happen for themselves. 2. A child friendly space for classes. As a mum of 2, I understand how hard it can be to find ‘me’ time and deal guilt when we do. I believe it is important for us to be able to spend time on our personal fitness and be an amazing role model for our kids, teaching them from an early age the importance of health and fitness. 3. A personal approach. We pride ourselves on making sure everyone who walks through the doors know they are important, they matter, they are not just another number. 4. A support network.
I am a big believer in having a support network to help us achieve our goals. Many women struggle to have this support network in other aspects of their life, so I like to think we can help by standing beside them along their journey, to help them be as successful as they possibly can. 5. A warm welcome. I love the vibe inside our studio and everyone welcomes everyone with open arms.
No session come and goes without amazing support and encouragement from all coaches and other clients! Many amazing friend ships have been formed purely from meeting at classes with people who you otherwise would never have met in normal day life TIPS FOR MAKING A COMMITMENT TO FITNESS 1. Find something you enjoy 2. Schedule ‘you’ time, if you wait to ‘have’ time it will never happen 3. Don’t try to go all out, start gradual and make it work in with your already busy routine

Why Your Smile Deserves A Specialist Orthodontist YOUR SMILE IS AN expression of who you are. It is that special thing that greets a friend, celebrates all of life’s joyful moments, and makes someone’s day that much brighter. We know how important your smile is to you and those around you. That’s why Dr. Rosario is a member of the Australian Society of Orthodontists (ASO), so we can always provide the best and most up-to-date care to our patients! All orthodontists are dentists, but not all dentists are orthodontists. Orthodontists go to four years of dental university, and beyond that, three more years of a full-time university residency program to specialize in orthodontics. Orthodontists are experts in straightening and aligning teeth to create healthy, beautiful smiles for all of our patients. Because Dr. Rosario is an AHPRA registered orthodontist, you can trust that all orthodontic treatment performed at Braces 4U meets the highest standards of quality, ethics and aesthetics. Providing orthodontic treatment is not just straightening teeth. Excellent and comprehensive orthodontic treatment requires a scientific and artistic working knowledge of functional occlusion (bite function), TMJ form and function, growth and development of the jaws and teeth, material science of the appliances used, and the biology of tooth movement bio-mechanics. It’s not just gluing braces onto teeth. And, it can’t be learned in a weekend course. This is why it is so important to have your orthodontic treatment done by a Specialist Orthodontist. Only graduates of orthodontic residency programs can be members of the Australian Society of Orthodontists. Only orthodontists can call themselves orthodontists. It is important for the public be aware that orthodontists receive extensive training and continuing educational training throughout their careers in order to be able to provide the best orthodontic care possible to their patients. At Braces 4U our number one priority is our patients’ safety and satisfaction. We’re always willing to go the extra mile to ensure that we are providing the best care to every single person who comes into our office!

Dr. Rosario is constantly improving her skills and learning how to better serve you. Why? Because you deserve the smile of your dreams, and we’re here to make that dream a reality!

5. Don’t be too hard on yourself, things will always come up and that’s ok, just know you will always make the best decision for yourself at the time

ANNETTE HARM Age: 33 Height: 173cm Weight: Goal weight 75kgs Number of previous fights: Zero Division: Unsure, this is my first fight

“Boxing is a way to completely let go mentally of whatever is going on in life. You can switch off and just work out any frustrations. It is also the fittest I have ever been!” Said Annette. The pre-fight training is rigorous and demanding, with multiple conditioning, striking and sparring sessions each week.

Best move: Other than my moves on the dance floor! I quite enjoy handing out a good body shot

“Surprisingly, I am finding the training enjoyable and it is pushing me further than I thought I could go,” said Annette.

Weak spot (if you’re willing to share!): My lack of fight experience

The hardest part for this food-loving lady is controlling her diet.

Something most people don’t know about you: I am a country girl, having grown up in the Calen area. I am more at home in the wide-open spaces than any city.

“The eating on the other hand, well that is a little more difficult as I am a bit of a foodie! I am cutting back on carbs and eating a high protein and fat diet, while reducing portion sizes each week.”

Harm by name, harm by nature! Despite being new to the sport, with a last name like this, it is clear, fighting to win is in Annette’s blood!

As a newbie, Annette is absorbing every pearl of wisdom from Whitsunday Martial Art’s coaches Dan and Anton who have guided and encouraged her through every training session.

A powerhouse on many levels, Annette is also the CEO of PRDnationwide Whitsundays and mother of two boys, age 7 and 11. Inspired by her sister who is an amateur boxer and an ‘all round strong kick-ass lady’, Annette started boxing seriously in January this year. JAKE LAURENCE

“The team at WMA have welcomed me with open arms over the last couple of months. I never once thought in life that I would be fighting in a ring in front of a crowd, but here I am, about to do it!”

Flash forward ten years and Jake, now 25, is competing in front of large crowds, winning his first tournament in Townsville and a beating his opponent in cage fight in Brisbane last year.

Age: 25 Height: 178cm Weight: 69kg

Best move: Wouldn’t say I have a best move in particular but I love the right uppercut.

Jake trains under the mentorship of coaches Dan and Anton from Whitsunday Martial Arts, attending six times a week and then going for a long run each Sunday morning. His diet is mainly lean meats such as chicken breast and bulk green veg, avoiding carbs as much as possible.

Weak spot (if you’re willing to share!): There’s always weak spots im working on. Not telling what they are though haha.

In the build-up to Fight Night, Jake’s training will intensify, and for him it is mental as well as physical preparation that is crucial.

Something most people don’t know about you: I’ve got a shocking cheese addiction.

“I get a mix of emotions before any fight really, some days I ask myself what I’m doing and feel rubbish then other days I feel I can take on the world! I’m always ready to go on the night though!” Said Jake.

Number of previous fights: 8 Division: Welterweight

At age 15 Jake was getting into a bit of trouble fighting with the other kids at school. When his mum took him to see his uncle, who is a boxer and a trainer, Jake’s life turned around. Finally he was able to focus and direct his aggression, and at the same time discovered a sport he both loved and excelled at.

Originally from Newcastle, Jake has been living in the Whitsundays for four years, completing an apprenticeship as a painter and decorator on Hamilton Island. He works long hours but always takes time to train for his next fight.

BLAIR FREW Age: 36 Weight: 70kg Height: 180cm Division: Light weight Previous fights: 7 Best move: Chin parry Something people don’t know about me: I hate my belly button being touched Blair started fighting from an early age and was encouraged into the sport by his dad who was a boxer. This inspired Blair to dedicate his spare time to fine-tuning his skills, leading him to specialise in Mixed Martial Arts (MMA). For Blair, MMA is much more than competing in fights. It is the connection he shares with his friends who he considers family at Whitsunday Martial Arts. “Getting to train every day surrounded by my

friends and family is why I love it. It’s also the most challenging thing I’ve ever done and the rush I get from fighting is amazing!’ Blair’s Fight Night preparations are strict and unyielding. He will stop drinking totally for the duration of fight camp, train every day and have a controlled diet. In the month before the fight every element of his life is geared toward fine-tuning his body and mind in preparation for the fight. Then, as the day of the fight arrives, Blair would not be human unless he felt scared. This natural emotion fuels the adrenaline he needs to focus when the bell rings to start the fight. He also finds it important to have distraction on the day of the fight. “I eat healthily and relax, try and have a sleep in and spend time with friends to take my mind off the fight,” said Blair. Outside of the ring, Blair works for local landscape and garden maintenance services, Whitpro Group and lives with his beautiful fiancé, Tash.

The space is fully air-conditioned with large sliding doors to a deck area and large windows looking out to the ocean. It can seat up to 70 guests and has a commercial kitchen on site. When previously operated, the restaurant has been a thriving hub for the boating community; there are 80 yacht club members and regular events. The Yacht Club is looking for a passionate, dedicated person/couple who can bring new life back to this much-loved dining destination.

EXPRESSION OF INTEREST

I’m Adrian Miles and I am currently Acting General Manager of Mackay Airport. 2019 is shaping up to be another incredibly exciting year for the Mackay Airport team. We look forward to continuing the work we have been doing across our community and improving the customer experience for all our passengers. Over December the Mackay Airport teams were involved in the regions Wild Fire response and facilitated engineering and ground crews operating from the Airport for several days. They did a great job water bombing the bush fires in the Mackay Region and the airport and crews were all really appreciative of the support. We have also just seen the opening of our new food and beverage outlets in the terminal including The Botanist Café Kitchen and Bar, Carlyle & River Coffee, Red Rooster and Boost. With a great selection of new food and beverage outlets, the airport now has something for every taste. Mackay Airport is a proud sponsor of the Mackay Airport Twilight City Run which is the official launch of the BMA Mackay Marina Run. The Mackay Airport Twilight City Run will be held on the 1 March 2019 and we invite you to join us at this special event. For more information visit www.mackaymarinarun.com

Mackay Airport’s ‘I fly Mackay Community Grant program’ is back again this year and has been going from strength to strength, providing much needed financial assistance to some of the hard working not-for-profit community-based organisations in the region. It has been a great pleasure to be able to award $1000 cash grants to community groups to help fund projects, events or equipment purchase. The program is open to sporting clubs promoting health and wellbeing in the community; organisations with an environmental, arts/culture or Aboriginal or Torres Strait Islander focus; or those delivering educational, community care or safety initiatives. A grant is awarded each month, with applications open on the first Friday of each month and closing on the third Friday of the month. Successful applicants will be notified on the first Friday of the following month via our website. All applications are reviewed by an independent panel and the whole team here at Mackay Airport is looking forward to making a difference in the Mackay community through the program. To apply or for further information visit: www.mackayairport.com.au

I HOPE EVERYONE IS OFF TO A GREAT START FOR 2019! UNTIL NEXT TIME, SEE YOU AT THE AIRPORT!

Hamilton Island Remember

CLOSE YOUR EYES AND THINK OF YOUR FAVOURITE HOLIDAY MEMORIES. The connection with friends and family, the laughter and love. The breeze under the shade of a palm tree, the feeling of time slipping away when the sun was the only watch you needed. Watching your children connect with nature as they discover a kaleidoscope of colour beneath the water, or cherished sunsets with your soulmate feeling like the only two people on the planet. THESE MEMORIES ARE OFTEN OUR REASON WHY. In our busy lives, we try to make the most of moments daily, but we’ve never been as overworked, stressed or time-poor as we are now. Technology allows us to connect with loved ones near and far, but while we’re virtually connected in more ways than ever, we’re increasingly losing the personal connections with who and what matters most. YOUR DREAM HOLIDAY IS CLOSER THAN YOU THINK. A place to reconnect with nature among breathtaking

beauty. A place to do everything or choose to do nothing at all. Where wonder and fun can be found around every corner.

options. Homes include fully self-contained kitchens for self-catering and Bungalows are equipped with handy kitchenettes.

REMEMBER WHY, AT HAMILTON ISLAND.

Snorkel under the sun then sail into the sunset, stretch at sunrise with a yoga class or simply relax poolside, sipping signature cocktails. Take an off-road adventure on a 4X4, buzz around the island on a golf buggy, play a round of golf on one of the most picturesque courses in the world, or soak up serenity in one of the island’s luxurious spas. With go-kart racing, mini golf, a bowling alley and arcade games, families will find a world of fun with plenty of time for natural experiences from the tropical bush to the beach. YOUR LOCAL RESORT ISLAND HAS A RANGE OF ACCOMMODATION TO SUIT EVERY NEED AND DESIRE. For big and small families, holiday homes and palm bungalows offer a range of space and facility

For a touch of adults-only luxury, the Beach Club is the place for a romantic escape. With a beachside infinity pool and chic rooms, it’s perfection in paradise. The ultimate in premium indulgence can be found at the island’s signature resort, qualia. Pavilions are luxurious and private, with no detail unnoticed. From private air-conditioned transfers to champagne on arrival, find out why the world’s biggest stars choose qualia as their destination of choice on the Great Barrier Reef. We don’t only live once, we live every day. Make the days more memorable at Hamilton Island and remember why.

Imagine . . . Daydreaming of an Island

T

he much anticipated opening day for Daydream Island has arrived! From 10th April 2019 guests will be able to book a secluded island escape in the heart of the Whitsundays at one of Australia’s most loved holiday resorts. The recipient of a lavish refurbishment following the destructive Cyclone Debbie, Daydream Island is proud to announce many exciting changes. The resort will boast three signature restaurants and new modern facilities whilst maintaining the natural Whitsundays charm it is known for. “We wanted the new Daydream Island Resort to reflect the beauty of its surroundings through the architecture, design and dining direction. We have embraced the favourite memories of our guests by reinstating the Living Reef, the Outdoor Cinema and an ode to the mermaids,” said Daydream Island Resort General Manager, Dawson Tang. A TRIO FOR YOUR TASTE BUDS Three signature restaurants and three new bars will each be defined by their own distinct design and flavour. Led by Executive Chef Keith LeFevre and Adrian Tyler, Food and Beverage Manager, seasonal local produce will showcase the best of the region at each restaurant.

Infinity will be the resort’s premium dining offering with an Asian fusion menu, open for lunch and dinner with expansive views over the Whitsundays. It also has a private Teppanyaki Suite offering diners an unforgettable dining experience.

ACTIVITIES AND EXPERIENCES

Graze Interactive Dining will welcome the outdoors in with draping greenery and floor to ceiling glass windows overlooking the Living Reef. It will be an interactive marketplace with live cooking stations and diverse dining options.

Guests will be able to join the team of marine biologists who live on the island and feed baby stingrays who live amongst over 100 species of marine fish, coral and invertebrates such as starfish, sea cucumbers and crabs. A new underwater observatory will also allow guests to view 4 metres below the water’s surface to watch the marine life in action. Kids will have the chance to become eco-warriors at Kids Club as they explore and learn about the Living Reef.

Inkstone Kitchen and Bar will focus on modern Australian cuisine with local produce and Australian native flavours at the heart of the menu. OPULENT SURROUNDS The island will offer a revitalised pool landscape that will wind through the tropical gardens across the resort allowing guests to swim and enjoy unparalled views across the Whitsundays Great Barrier Reef. The swimming hub will be complemented by poolside Barefoot Bar, inclusive of a new dining concept serving gourmet burgers, sliders, pork ribs and chicken wings with fresh smoothies, milkshakes, wine, beer and tropical cocktails.

The Living Reef, will be making its return to the island in an even bigger and better way, further cementing its eco-friendly and educational focus.

The resort will have a host of other activities for guests to experience such as snorkeling adventures, helicopter tours exploring the island & surrounding Great Barrier Reef Marine Park as well as sailboat and jetski hire. An exclusive adult’s only area will cater to those in search of a sanctuary and a little slice of peace and quiet.
