Well, what a few weeks it’s been! It’s hard to start an editor’s note without first acknowledging TC Debbie and sending out a comforting hug to all those that endured, survived and are now, once again, beginning to thrive after the event we will never forget. In this issue of Core Life we wanted to talk about the cyclone, but not of its devastation and horror, although of course we cannot avoid including some of this. Instead, we decided to focus on the positivity that has since been generated. We tell the story of the cyclone through its inspiring outcomes, its amazing local heroes, incredible acts of kindness and the teamwork from hundreds of individuals that are helping our communities recover. All these stories imprint one definite motto, one that shouts from the treetops, ‘we will rise again!’ Rising up is something we also discuss in our Men in Industry feature which profiles our local business heroes. They work in a variety of different industries and professions yet all have a unique and inspiring story to tell about their rise to business success. We also show success in sport, celebrating ten years of the Mackay Cutters. Our team heads into the locker-room, meeting the players, interviewing the CEO, Coach, Manager and two Co-Captains. Getting the inside story on their ongoing success. Finally, Core Life takes a trip north to the ‘top of the Whitsundays’ and the beautiful town of Bowen. Here we showcase the second of our destination features, telling the locals story, from veteran farmer to three young sisters who are rocking the business world. As you can see, it’s an action-packed issue, full of heart-warming personal accounts. An inspiring collection of local stories that unite our region and reminds us why we are so special. It’s been a rollercoaster of a ride putting this issue together and we hope it brings you all joy!

Every time I walk into Hairway I know I’m up for an adventure. Shane & the team know exactly what is trendy & in fashion & always talk about what will work with me & my lifestyle. I love their honesty & I have always walked out super happy with my new style/cut/colour. They definitely know how to pamper you & have the best products to make your hair look & feel the best. I personally used to struggle with my natural hair with styling & home care, Hairway is great at showing & teaching you how to achieve salon results at home without the upsell of the products you don’t need.

Had such a great experience on Thursday with Shane who has started my hair transformation journey. I walked in with very black hair and came out much lighter. Shane was able to keep my hair in great condition which is thanks to his great work and what you can tell is quality products. I loved having such a passionate person; who you can tell really loves their job and clients, take me on this journey.

However, back then, he and his wife, Sharon, didn’t imagine they would fall in love with the town. “We have now built a house in Bowen and intend to retire here,” he says “and, as long as they don’t install traffic lights we intend to stay. If they do, it means the place is getting too big, and we will have to move on!” Originally from a cattle-grazing background, Paul worked for 26 years in the mining industry, starting as a tradesman, and then working in supervisor’s positions before taking over man-agement roles. The couple now owns the management rights to Rose Bay Resort in Bowen, a beautiful self-contained apartment complex in a picturesque bay, with its own private beach. Shuckz oyster

& champagne bar

LOCATED ALONG WHAT IS FAST BECOMING KNOWN AS THE ‘FOODIES CORRIDOR OF AIRLIE BEACH’, SHUCKS OYSTER AND CHAMPAGNE BAR IS A LIVELY PLACE FOR PEOPLE TO MEET.

Call in to grab a quick bite of the freshest seafood or sit down and graze at your leisure, enjoying the freshly shucked oysters washed down with a glass of chilled champagne. Manager, Steph, is your highly skilled host, whose knowledge about oysters will have you mesmerised! Originally from Leiden, a coastal town on the western side of Holland, Steph has been working with oysters for the last ten years. She’s worked with some of the best in the industry during her time in Holland and brought the concept of the ‘Oyster Girl’ with her to Airlie Beach. Steph believes in offering a unique experience as well as a freshly shucked oyster, developing tastes and sharing her knowledge with everyone she meets. “I love making people happy with oysters,” says Steph, “It started as a side job while studying then quickly became my passion.”

WHAT SORT OF OYSTERS DO YOU SERVE AT SHUCKS?

WHAT ELSE IS ON THE MENU?

We source all our oysters’ fresh from South Australia and Tasmania. They are Pacific Oysters, grown in cold waters to create a large, plump oyster, renowned for its superior flavor.

WHAT IS UNIQUE ABOUT THE PACIFIC OYSTER TASTE?

The Pacific Oyster has a fuller body and the muscle of the oyster is big, giving it a fuller taste. The bigger the muscle, the sweeter the taste! The saltiness from the sea and the sweetness from the muscle give our oysters their unique taste.

WHAT IS SO SPECIAL ABOUT THE SHUCKS OYSTER EXPERIENCE?

Here at Shucks we specialise in oysters and shuck them fresh for each order, we only deal with the live product so you couldn’t get a fresher oyster than ours! We also specialise in combining oysters with bubbles, we can recommend combinations that work well together, giving you the history and reasons the flavours are so wellmatched. Our tasters menu offers 3 oysters and a glass of champagne for just $18.

We have delicious platters of prawns, bugs and muscles. All served as cold, fresh seafood. For non-seafood lovers we have French-style small dishes such as olives, prosciutto, cheese platters and other European style appetisers. Our extensive drinks menu also includes the largest range of internationally renowned Gins matched with infused tonics as well as after dinner liqueurs such as port, sherry, cognac and fine whiskeys.

WHAT OYSTER FLAVOURS WOULD YOU RECOMMEND YOUR CUSTOMERS TRY?

One of our own creations is the beetroot and chili jam which has become very popular. Also, if you love a buzz, I would recommend our Bloody Mary Oyster Shots made with a strong, punchy cocktail that keeps you coming back for more! Lastly, the Greta Gable, named after the famous strongheaded film star. Full of character, a natural oyster topped with fresh salmon, caviar and a lime crème fraiche.

HEMINGWAY’S Abell Point Marina Newly opened, Hemingway’s at Abell Point Marina’s South Village in Airlie Beach is setting a new benchmark for restaurants around the region. With its vibrant marina location, coastal chic, Hampton’s style interior and al fresco dining deck the restaurant offers a first-class dining experience and a menu to match.

Taking its inspiration from famous writer and ocean voyager, Ernest Hemingway, menu items have been handpicked to reflect his tastes. From the much talked about edible cigar to his love of seafood, especially oysters, the menu offers modern Australian cuisine with influences from around the world. Core Life Magazine met with newly appointed head chef, Matt Dixon, to find out more about what Hemingway’s has to offer. At just 29 years old, Matt is enthusiastic, energetic and eager to demonstrate his culinary flair. Originally from Adelaide, Matt has grown up around the kitchen. He comes from a family of chefs and started work in a commercial kitchen at the age of 14. “As soon as I stepped foot in the kitchen I was hooked” says Matt, “I loved every minute of it.” Since then Matt has dedicated himself to cooking, travelling the world as a chef before arriving in the Whitsundays to work at one of the prestigious island resorts where he met his wife, Diana. The couple have since welcomed their first child, Sebastiano, and moved onto the mainland to settle-down. Matt says his family are his inspiration and credits his wife, Diana, for pushing him to be the very best. Being the best he can be is a skill that will be tested in his role at Hemingway’s and Matt is determined to impress each and every customer. His personally styled menu made with only the best locally sourced produce is dedicated to maintaining the high standard Abell Point Marina is known for. A treat for everyone who enters Hemingway’s doors!

WHAT IS THE MOST UNIQUE ITEM ON YOUR MENU? It has to be the edible cigar on our dessert menu. It is a pastry cigar filled with maple Chantilly cream, pistachios, hazelnut chocolate and a coco & coconut ash. It looks like a cigar but tastes fantastic!

WHAT FUNNY STORIES DO YOU HAVE FROM YOUR LIFE AS A CHEF? When I was a young apprentice, I was often tested by my senior chefs and asked to char grill an egg, finely chop flour or mop a walk-in freezer! While all this was a good fun, it was also a good lesson for the future.

WHAT, IN YOUR OPINION MAKES A GOOD CHEF? To be a good chef you have to be an open-minded, focused and passionate person who is ready to step out of their comfort zone and constantly try something new.

WHAT IS YOUR FAVOURITE CHEF’S QUOTE? “Good food is the foundation of genuine happiness” - Auguste Escoffier

TC DEBBIE RECOVERY FEATURE

SHE CAME, SHE BLEW‌ BUT WE CONQUERED WHILE TROPICAL CYCLONE DEBBIE WILL LONG BE REMEMBERED FOR THE TRAIL OF DESTRUCTION LEFT IN ITS PATH, THE MEMORIES WORTH HAVING WILL BE THOSE OF FRIENDSHIPS FORGED, AND COMMUNITY BONDS STRENGTHENED. Things lost can be replaced, buildings damaged can be rebuilt. But the level of human compassion shown and remarkable tales of strength and courage will be celebrated long after the last piece of debris is cleared. We, as a community, conquered.

Tropical Cyclone Debbie Forming as a tropical low on March 23, the intensified low was officially named Debbie on March 26, as it became a tropical cyclone. Offshore it intensified into a Category 4 system. Initial reports predicted the cyclone would make landfall between Townsville and Bowen, but a constant southern movement later saw the system make landfall near Airlie Beach around 2:00 p.m. on March 28. The immediate danger was anticipated to be a severe storm

surge, with a high tide coinciding with the imminent arrival of the weather system. Tens of thousands of residents from Bowen, Airlie Beach, Mackay and many coastal communities were given evacuation warnings and orders to evacuate. As the reality of what was approaching took hold, airports and schools were closed, train services between Rockhampton and Townsville were suspended, ports in Mackay and the Whitsundays were closed and electricity workers, the Australian Defence Force and specialist emergency personnel were deployed from across the nation to the Mackay and Whitsunday regions.

TC DEBBIE RECOVERY FEATURE

“The true test of a character is to face hard conditions with the determination to make them better.” Since Tropical Cyclone Debbie devastated the Whitsunday Region on 28 March, each and every person has been challenged in one way or another. None more so than our Council employees who continue to work tirelessly and with immense pride, to help restore some normality back into our communities. They too have their families to take care of and homes to repair; they have also felt first-hand the effects of what Debbie inflicted. Our team in the Whitsunday Disaster Coordination Centre and Council’s Water and Waste employees had to work with Ergon Energy under immense pressure to establish temporary generators and restore power and water to our residents as quickly as possible. This was extremely difficult given that many roads were flooded, blocking access in the

initial hours after the cyclone. At the peak of the response, we had 44 generators stationed at our water and sewerage pump stations across the region. The day after the cyclone, our outdoor crews were out assisting the police with road diversions and working with contractors to clear drains of debris to minimise flooding, clearing roads so they were accessible for emergency services, supplies and traffic, refuelling generators for the Telstra tower and other major buildings, managing landslides and other emergency works. By day two, the green waste and vegetation removal had commenced with temporary drop-off points established and day three saw the clean-up of major foreshore areas and the Airlie Beach Lagoon with our friends from

Rockhampton Regional Council. A lot of this work will be ongoing for some time as Council and the recovery teams work together to bring our region back to the normal way of life. I’m extremely proud of the Whitsunday Regional Council, the local SES volunteers, emergency services and our residents for showing strength, resilience and courage in the face of one of the worst disasters to hit the Whitsundays. In true Queensland spirit we have already begun to bounce back and although recovery will take some time, we can all still appreciate why we call the Whitsunday Region home.

Mayor Andrew Willcox

Hamilton Island

AS TROPICAL CYCLONE DEBBIE HONED IN ON THE WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS, THE SHEER FEROCITY OF MOTHER NATURE WAS WITNESSED BY THE RESIDENTS AND VISITORS OF HAMILTON ISLAND. HOWEVER DUE TO THE POSITIVITY AND RESILIENT NATURE OF RESORT STAFF, THE ISLAND WELCOMED BACK VISITORS ONLY ONE WEEK FOLLOWING THE IMPACT OF THE CYCLONE.

CEO of Hamilton Island, Glenn Bourke, talks about the collective effort of 1,200 staff to revive the island in such a short period of time. “There was an enormous personal and collective effort put into cleaning up the island and at all times our staff worked with a positive attitude. I was humbled by the efforts of the Hamilton Island community and am extremely proud of our 1200 staff, who contributed an enormous amount to get the island ready for business in such a short time frame,” he said.

“I would like to thank our airline partners, Virgin Australia, Qantas and Jetstar, who worked closely with us to provide additional services to ensure guests on Hamilton Island were returned home as quickly as possible following the cyclone. The airline’s support for Hamilton Island and the Whitsundays region following the cyclone has been greatly appreciated.” Hamilton Island’s luxury resort, qualia, is currently closed until July 1, to undergo planned renovations which were brought forward to commence immediately.

Hamilton Island endured the most ferocious wind gusts recorded during TC Debbie, up to 260kph, but due to stringent building code standards on the island and preparation by staff, damage was largely cosmetic and guests remained well cared for. “The impact of the cyclone resulted in damage to vegetation and the facade of the Island, however no significant structural damage occurred to any of the hotels and resorts due to their construction to the highest cyclone safety ratings. At all times during the cyclone the safety and comfort of our guests was of paramount importance and our staff went above and beyond to look after those who were staying on the Island. “We communicated regularly through the hotel TV system to keep guests updated and we prepared food packs in the lead up, so that in the event of a “lock down” guests would not be concerned that they might be hungry whilst confined to their rooms for longer periods,” Mr Bourke said. During the tenure of their ownership of Hamilton Island, the Oatley Family have invested more than $600 million into new infrastructure on the island. Mr Bourke said, “We are fortunate to be self-sufficient with vital infrastructure such as power and water, which meant we were able to commence the restoration process instantaneously. Ultimately, it was the efforts of our staff and the Hamilton Island community which allowed us to open so quickly and return to business as usual.” He also praised the island’s airline partners.

Otherwise, the water has returned to the sparkling turquoise colour it is so famous for, the restaurants are dishing up world-class fare and Catseye beach is once again a powder-white, sandy haven to relax upon. Hamilton Island is open for business and ready to treat you to the vacation of a lifetime.

TC DEBBIE RECOVERY FEATURE

In severe situations such as this, talk is cheap and actions are what will help a community to prevail. As Tropical Cyclone Debbie approached, a local Mackay organisation comprised solely of volunteers, were already preparing for the aftermath.

AIDTASKERS

assisting those in need AFTER FEELING FIGURATIVELY AND LITERALLY ‘STRANDED’ DURING THE MACKAY FLOOD OF 2008, DAVID AYLES CAME UP WITH A CONCEPT OF FORMING A DISASTER MANAGEMENT ORGANISATION TO ASSIST PEOPLE WHO AREN’T ABLE TO FEND FOR THEMSELVES. Years of planning and meetings took place with local businesses and council, but the arrival of Cyclone Debbie saw the launch of Aidtaskers commence faster than expected. A recovery centre on Palmer Street was opened soon after the arrival of TC Debbie, and thanks to the tireless work of Dave and a dedicated team of volunteers, the call for help was heard far and wide. Organisations and individuals dug deep, and donated enough goods to fill the Aidtaskers warehouse four times and counting! These important items, including essential food, water, sanitary, toiletry items, toys and other critical supplies were distributed to more than 3,500 people from as far north as the Hideaway Bay area, Airlie Beach, Midge Point, the Mackay Region and as far south as Rockhampton. Not only did the team coordinate thousands of items for emergency distribution to people in need, they also spent days in remote locations to assist with the cleanup, as well as being used as a point of contact for individuals seeking the whereabouts of loved ones. “I received a request from the Brisbane area from a family who had heard about Aidtaskers and hadn’t heard from their 87-year-old sister for four days. It was pitch black when I finally found her. The look on her face when she was able to use my phone to make contact with her sister, and after seeing what goodies were prepared for her to keep going for a few days, will stick with me forever,” Dave said. Dave believes that there is an urgent need for innovation in the Disaster Management Field. “Our disaster services teams do an incredible job, my vision is to bring a full-time effort for the discussion of innovative ideas so that people can better prepare, respond and recover to disaster events. My dream is for this to become a reality before the next disaster does occur,” he said. 20 www.corelife.com.au

Dr Melissa McCann

AS THE CYCLONE BORE DOWN ON THE WHITSUNDAY ISLANDS, STRUCTURES WERE TORN APART WITH WIND GUSTS MEASURING GREATER THAN 260 KM/H. BOATS WERE TORN FROM MOORINGS AND THE JETTY AT DAYDREAM ISLAND WAS DESTROYED, LEAVING 300 PEOPLE STRANDED AND IN NEED OF SUPPLIES. Trees were uprooted and some Airlie Beach residents were injured during the cyclonic winds. With no access to Proserpine hospital, Whitsunday Family Practice set up a temporary emergency facility to treat urgent patients, donating doctors and staff to assist the Queensland Ambulance Service. Owner of Whitsunday Family Practice, Dr Melissa McCann recalls the immediate aftermath of the cyclone. “It reminded me of how I would picture an Army hospital!” she said “There was limited lighting and no air-conditioning. It was very hot, very very busy with doctors, nurses, staff and patients in every room, on every treatment bed and just so many people who needed to be helped. There were ambulances bringing in patients in on stretchers. Everyone had to use buckets of water to flush toilets. Staff had been without running water and power at home but put 100% effort to help every patient and no-one complained.”

Dr Mel was overwhelmed by the selfless effort of everyone involved. Her own staff, in some cases, had significant damage to their own houses but chose to come and help others instead, leaving their own families. Doctors and nurses, not affiliated with her surgery came and offered to help. Members of the community brought fuel for the generator, some taking it from their cars so that the surgery could keep working. Others came in with donations of food, water and pillows to help care for patients. Finally, a reminder of precious life came when a ‘cyclone baby’ was born. A moment Dr Mel will remember forever. “Of course the mother of course did all the work,” she said, “and the Queensland Ambulance Service were more than capable and prepared for anything, I was really just there for backup. It is not something I will ever forget.” Dr Mel would like to say special thanks to everyone who helped, including Dr Emma Hinschen, Dr Skye Nissen, Dr

Sonya Khatiwhala, Dr Chris Gill, Dr Frans Badenhorst, Dr Matt Allen and nurses Annie Kercher, Tina Badenhorst and Kristy Lee. “This pretty horrible last few weeks has just shown all of us what a caring, wonderful and resilient community we live in, we are all so proud to be a part of it and to have been able to help in some way.”

OPENING HIS HEART

Raj Sharma - Roshni Indian Restaurant

“BE KIND TO OTHERS, NOT SO THAT YOU WILL BE REWARDED, BUT TO MAKE A GENUINE DIFFERENCE IN OTHER PEOPLE’S LIVES.” OPENING HIS HEART AND HIS RESTAURANT IS SOMETHING THAT COMES NATURALLY TO ROSHNI INDIAN RESTAURANT OWNER, RAJ SHARMA. With more than 63,000 homes left without power across Queensland, people were beginning to feel the impact left by TC Debbie. The simple luxuries of life we take for granted, such as a hot shower, a cold fridge and a hot meal, were now the necessities we craved most. While many cafes, restaurants and chefs in Mackay offered free food and coffee to emergency workers, one particular gesture of generosity shined. “Be kind to others, not so that you will be rewarded, but to make a genuine difference in other people’s lives.” Opening his heart and his restaurant is something that comes naturally to Roshni Indian Restaurant owner, Raj Sharma. Known throughout the Mackay community for his generosity, Raj believes that humanity rises

the most when we lift others less fortunate than ourselves. “I am thankful for the values given to me by my parents, which is to inspire kindness among others and pay it forward. Without the community, I wouldn’t have a business, so when the community is in need, it is my privilege to be able to thank people in the best way I know how, by opening the door to my restaurant.” Raj is remembered fondly for opening his restaurant on Christmas Day, to offer food to those less fortunate and for those who had no other family to celebrate with. “No one should be sad on Christmas,” he said. “What I remember are the hugs and the tears of thanks. That is what is important to me. Not how much it cost. I don’t even know how much it cost and I don’t care, all I care about are those hugs and how much it meant to those people.”

When Tropical Cyclone Debbie struck Mackay and the Whitsundays, he was thankful that his business sustained little damage. But he knew that others in the community needed help, so he once again opened the door to his restaurant, offering free food to emergency crew workers and members of the SES. “We are a small town, but we have a big heart. These are the values I want to raise my daughter around.” Raj’s generosity is more overwhelming given the fact that he lost a successful business in Cairns after Cyclone Yasi. “I have faced tough times, I know what it is like to lose almost everything. If I can help just one person in need to get them through a tough time, then I am happy,” he said.

A BEACON OF LIGHT Cosmos Food Van

WHEN OWNER OF THE COSMOS FOOD VAN, TRACEY LORD, DROVE AROUND THE DEVASTATED COMMUNITY THE DAY AFTER TC DEBBIE HIT, HER FIRST THOUGHTS WERE: “WHAT CAN I DO?” In the Whitsundays, generous business owners and many members of the community donated what they could to those less fortunate. In particular, the combined effort of D’Vine Catering and Cosmos Food Van, ensured that locals and visitors alike were offered reprieve in the form of delicious meals. When owner of the Cosmos Food Van, Tracey Lord, drove around the devastated community the day after TC Debbie hit, her first thoughts were: “What can I do?” Owning a local catering business, Tracey knew that the best way she could help console weary survivors was to do what she did best. Feed them. Pulling up in different locations across Airlie Beach, the Cosmos Van was a bright beacon of light in the darkened street. “Everyone was so shell-shocked” Tracey recalls, “We worked all day and night serving hundreds of burgers to hundreds of people for free. Many people wanted to talk and share their experience so our van became a meeting place, a chance to chat and way to heal.” One evening local singer, Tahlia performed at Beaches in the teeming rain while Tracey served burgers outside. The music travelled across the empty streets, further aiding community spirits and offering food for the soul as well as the body. Tracey has also set-up a Go Fund Me page raising $14,500 so far, with a goal of $20,000. The money raised will go to a local cause dedicated to cleaning up the Whitsundays after the cyclone.

RAISING FUNDS Fat Frog Beach Cafe

DECIDING TO RAISE MONEY FOR THE RAVISHED COMMUNITY NAOMI AND HER TEAM OFFERED A FREE COFFEE IN EXCHANGE FOR DONATIONS. When Naomi McKinnon, owner of Fat Frog Beach Café returned to her business ‘the day after Debbie’ she was shocked to see her café largely intact. She quickly realised they were one of the very, very lucky ones The ceiling in the kitchen had collapsed during the rain immediately after the cyclone but the quick response of the local tradesmen meant Fat Frog Café was able to serve coffees using a generator five days after the event. “It didn’t feel right to use the time for profit,”

Naomi said, so decided to raise money for the community she adores so much by offering a free coffee in exchange for donations. Announcing her campaign though social media, Naomi was astounded by the amount of people that showed up. “We wanted to reach a goal of $6000,” says Naomi, “which we’d chosen to provide to the Whitsunday Crisis and Counseling angels. We reached this goal after 2 ½ days and there were many many people paying $50

for their coffee knowing it would be helping someone else in our community.” “As a family we had mixed emotions about the decision to open so quickly, but it turned out to be just the positivity the community needed. For everyone to have a place to meet, to hug, to talk, to exchange stories was incredibly emotional and beautiful. The rawness in everyone was palpable but truly bonding.”

ORANGE SKY LAUNDRY

Launches into action WITH FULL TUMMIES AND A SENSE OF NORMALITY BEGINNING TO RETURN, PEOPLE THEN LOOKED FOR WAYS TO IMPROVE PERSONAL HYGIENE. WHILE ‘BUCKET BATHS’ WERE SEEMINGLY UNAVOIDABLE, THE FOUNDERS OF ORANGE SKY LAUNDRY SENT A TEAM OF 10 WITH THEIR MOBILE LAUNDRY VANS TO WASH AND DRY TONNES OF WET, DIRTY CLOTHING.

What started as a crazy idea in 2014 has evolved into a world-first phenomenon here in Australia. Orange Sky Laundry is the world’s first free mobile laundry service for the homeless, which launched in the streets of Brisbane. As well as expanding its services across Australia, the team at Orange Sky launch into action when communities need them most. When Cyclone Debbie made its way across the Whitsunday Coast, Orange Sky sent a mobile laundry van to Mackay to assist those who had suddenly become homeless. The crew then headed to Proserpine, Airlie Beach and Bowen, washing two and a half tonnes of laundry before moving to Dingo Beach. A newly fitted bus with five washers and two driers positioned itself at Bowen. More volunteers joined the roster, allowing the crew to wash 24 hours per day. Orange Sky Laundry mobilized a full fleet to assist multiple cyclone affected communities across Queensland and New South Wales. Just as important as the laundry washed, Orange Sky is a facilitator of conversation between society and the homeless in our communities. Its volunteers have more than 1,300 hours of positive and genuine conversation every week. “In the one hour time it takes to wash and dry someone’s clothes there is absolutely nothing to do but sit down on one of our 6 orange chairs and have a positive and genuine conversation between our everyday volunteers and everyday friends on the street.” Orange Sky Laundry is a not-for-profit organization. On average it costs $6 per load of washing. Repay the favour given to those in need in our own community by sponsoring a wash for a homeless friend in an Australian city.

TC DEBBIE RECOVERY FEATURE The saying, when it rains it pours, seemed poignant in the days following TC Debbie. The storm which followed unleashed a relentless deluge of water across much of Queensland, spilling over into New South Wales and even New Zealand, where the town of Edgecumbe was severely inundated. In particular, heavy rain in the Mackay region resulted in the Kinchant Dam reaching 120% of its capacity. The resulting overflow flooded the township of Eton, where many houses were inundated and more than 30 residents

WHITPRO

Spring into action WITH THE RAVISHES OF TC DEBBIE CAUSING SO MUCH DAMAGE TO TREES AND BUSHLAND, THEY HAD A LOT OF WORK TO DO.

were air lifted to safety after being rescued via boat by fire rescue crews. But Debbie still wasn’t done with Queensland. The inland catchments which flow into the Fitzroy River meant that in the days to come, much of Rockhampton would be inundated in flood water also. However after the rain clouds cleared, the sun shone again as it famously does in Queensland and people rallied to bring a sense of normalcy back to their towns. Chainsaws and generators hummed as the clean-up began.

When Norina and Tim first returned to the Garden Valley Centre (Whitpro home) after the cyclone, they admit they experienced some hesitation. “What would we ourselves be facing?” Norina says, of the yet unknown devastation. “The first few minutes we just stood there, taking in the destruction. Walking around slowly assessing and then it was all action. We picked up a chainsaw and started working. Getting into action lifts our spirits.” Norina and husband Tim are owners of the Whitpro Group, a local landscape and garden maintenance company. With the ravishes of TC Debbie causing so much damage to trees and bushland, they had a lot of work to do. The couple had the machines and the tools needed for the job but without their team to man them, they would be useless. The couple were left speechless when all their staff arrived and would like to thank them for selflessly putting aside their own personal losses and difficulties to come to the aid of the community as a whole. The Whitpro team went on to spend the next several weeks working 16 hour days alongside Council, other businesses and individuals to clear the local area and help us get back a sense of normality. Thank you to those who reached out to Whitpro too, the PCYC for feeding the boys, Nel for bringing water and clothes, to our staff that lost everything, to those who shook our hands and shared their stories. “Our community is full of heroes,” says Norina, “So many stories untold and acts of kindness that show us why the Whitsundays is a pretty special place to live.” “Now it’s time to get inspired to reshape our gardens. It’s time to keep those new found relationships with neighbours we did not know we had, but can now see for the first time without the many trees of separation!”

MOLOKO HOMES

Skills that made a difference IN THE IMMEDIATE AFTERMATH LOCAL CONSTRUCTION COMPANY, MOLOKO HOMES, SAW THE DEVASTATION AND KNEW THEY HAD THE SKILLED WORKFORCE THAT COULD MAKE A DIFFERENCE Owners Gavin and Jess made the selfless decision to volunteer the service of themselves and their workforce to assist those in need within the community. “We wanted to help the single mums, the elderly and the people that were unable, for whatever reason, to do it for themselves” Says Jess. “We put it out there online through Facebook and were astounded by the amount of calls and messages we received. It was unreal and extremely hectic.” The six-man team, skilled in the construction trade, headed out wherever they were needed across the region. Most of their work was ‘make-safes’, ensuring properties were safe for people to return and live there. They took down debris, removed blocked areas and generally aided with the heavy lifting residents were unable to do themselves. www.corelife.com.au 29

PLANTS WHITSUNDAY

It’s all about team work! WHEN THE REST OF US WERE STILL SHELL-SHOCKED AND TRYING TO PIECE TOGETHER THE ENORMITY OF WHAT THE RECOVERY WOULD ENTAIL, PLANTS WHITSUNDAY WERE BUSY CLEARING ROADS AND HELPING COUNCIL. Plants Whitsunday is another local company that had people on the ground at 7am the morning after the cyclone. When the rest of us were still shell-shocked and trying to piece together the enormity of what the recovery would entail, Plants Whitsunday were busy clearing roads and helping Council. Matt Stokes, owner of Plants Whitsunday, has upmost respect for all Council’s work. “I would like to highly commend them on the tremendous job they have done in managing such a large scale clean up.” Says Matt, “At times it seemed impossible but we all pulled together.” “Myself and several key staff members, have only had a day or two off in the past few weeks but we all felt compelled to find people who needed help and return some of the community spirit by volunteering for others in need.”

Matt would like to thank his staff for the massive effort and commitment shown in the weeks after the cyclone. They all worked tirelessly, most working 6 ½ days a week without complaint, often cleaning their own yards at night after work.

THINKWATER WHITSUNDAY Play an important role FILLING A GLASS OF WATER STRAIGHT FROM THE TAP OR STANDING UNDERNEATH A WARM SHOWER IS SOMETHING MOST RESIDENTS TOOK FOR GRANTED BEFORE TC DEBBIE

This complacency was tested however when, within a day of the cyclone, our taps ran dry leaving us without water for almost a week. Suddenly, our exhausted community had to be resourceful, finding drinking water by any means possible, flushing toilets with buckets of water and going without a shower for days. To add to this stress many of our pools with broken pumps were gradually turning green, household water systems were not working properly and damage to gutters, roofs, taps and toilets were immeasurable. At this time, like many other local trade services, Think Water Whitsunday, quickly realised the important role they needed to play. “Everyone has been affected by the cyclone in some way,” says Sharon from Think Water. “Noel and the staff have been working day and night repairing and replacing pumps that were damaged during Cyclone Debbie. Our main concern was getting pumps back up and running, and restoring running water for those customers with no other source of water to their homes. We have also tended to our many customers with septic systems, ensuring they are functioning properly again.“ Water is one of life’s necessities and, losing it for a week, has made us all realise how important it is to our everyday survival and comfort. The moment the water came on again, it felt more valuable than gold!

A SALUTE TO THE SES IN TIMES OF DISASTER, THE BEST WAY YOU CAN HELP OTHERS INITIALLY, IS BY HELPING YOURSELF. A RESILIENT COMMUNITY WITH RESIDENTS WHO ARE SELF-SUFFICIENT AND WELL-PREPARED DURING AN EMERGENCY, ALLOW OUR DISASTER RECOVERY TEAMS, SUCH AS THE SES, TO RESPOND TO THOSE IN CRITICAL NEED. SES Whitsunday Divisional Commander, Mark Connors, explains how the SES is designed to empower people to help themselves in times of emergency and disaster “The basic concept is one of self-help and mutual assistance. We rely on the community to bunker down and stay at home while we assist those most vulnerable.” During the course of Cyclone Debbie and the following storm, the SES in the Whitsunday Shire alone logged in excess of 2,700 missions. An unbelievable achievement considering almost all members of the SES are volunteers. Mark explains the training that takes place long before a disaster hits. “SES members train for two hours per week, on average of around 44 weeks per year. After the three month trial period, basic training moves to more advanced courses, such as chainsaw operation to clear roads and operating flood rescue boats. More complex courses, such as vertical rescue training, can take two or three weekends of training on top of the weekly training.” Cyclones and flooding are the core business of the SES in the Mackay and Whitsunday regions, the SES constantly plan and upgrade plans to be able to efficiently and effectively respond to disaster situations. “In a recent disaster planning review, the Mackay and Whitsunday regions were found to be amongst the best in the state with their disaster planning procedures. That is something we are immensely proud of, and certainly showed in the response of Cyclone Debbie,” Mark said.

32 www.corelife.com.au

When it was safe to respond, one of the SES’s first missions was to a couple in Shute Harbour. Their home had sustained significant damage, but the road was heavily blocked with trees. It took the crew almost two hours of chain sawing to clear blockages on the road to bring the couple to safer accommodation in Airlie Beach. They were later tasked to people who had been trapped by flood water north of Proserpine, then sent to an elderly person in a trapped farm house who had been feeling unwell. The team was then sent over flood water to a lady who was giving birth. “The SES flood boat crew crossed Hamilton Plains and then Myrtle Creek at around 3:30am to meet the ambulance. SES crews assessed during the crossing that transporting the patient might only be carried out if there was no other option. The baby was born at the Cannonvale Ambulance Station.” As a long-term member of the SES, Mark has been involved with every disaster in our region, since Cyclone Larry in 2006. “This was the most effectively coordinated response I’ve seen to date. There are a lot of people in the background who coordinate what the rescuers are doing on the ground. Rather than respond to individual jobs, which is time-consuming, the SES were split into 44 sectors, enabling emergency services to focus on specific areas of need while creating access to homes in a quicker time frame,” he said. The lessons learned from Cyclone Debbie will be applied to future disasters, but importantly for every resident at home, this event highlighted how important it is to be prepared.

TC DEBBIE RECOVERY FEATURE "Like everyone who experienced this very different Cyclone system, I was on auto pilot, exhausted and perhaps in shock afterwards. My daughter and I experienced the cyclone alone, so whilst I was aware that I should go and check LAP to see the extent of the damage, I was simply too fearful to go in case there was nothing left standing.” "The thought of the past 6 years hard work (by both the first fund raising entity - PAG, then the efforts our group had gone to, to fast track LAP to completion) being wiped out in a day was beyond comprehension. Yes, there is insurance, however the sheer efforts, time dedicated, sacrifices made, emotion and love that had been invested into fund raising for each piece cannot be replaced. The pace we had set was fast and the playground was looking the best its ever looked when Debbie hit. Luckily the only equipment damage was the cables on the flying fox. All other equipment is not damaged." “In Debbies aftermath, something truly heart warming happened. Still in shock, I went to Home Hardware Cannonvale. I needed a pole saw and a chainsaw. I met one of the Reps from Stihl (Scott Miller), who had travelled with his team to assist with the clean up, and was assembling the new equipment as exhausted customers made their purchases. To cut a long story short, Scott offered to help with the clean up at my property, then he found out about LAP. (I don’t think he thought me capable of operating the gear).”

My Earth Angels What is the difference between a project and a labour of love? When it comes to Logan’s Adventure Playground, the answer is emotional connection. Lisa Christofersen is the President of Play and Shine Project Group, the registered charity which heads Logan’s Adventure Playground (LAP) in Coral Esplanade Cannonvale Beach. The Charity is operated by a small dedicated group of focused locals were, at first horrified when confronted by the damage that the cyclone had dealt the region, but more specifically, this special playground which has been built by community raised funds in honour of Logan Wells, Lisas’ 6 year-old son who passed from cancer in December 2010. We caught up with Lisa, as we heard about some truly moving acts of human kindness which occurred after Cyclone Debbie ripped through LAP.

“I saw the very very best of human spirit on that day, and the following days. In total, 11 volunteers came to help us with the complete tangled mess that the cyclone had created at LAP. Of course our Gold Sponsors Jono and Lisa Moir of GJ Gardner Homes were first on the scene to help, showing their commitment to the playground. What started as a daunting, dark day literally turned into the brightest day of hope. A total of 42 man-hours were spent on commercial equipment. Volunteers just kept turning up. There were trees in the playground which were decades old, which was part of the charm of the site. Of course these became the ugly casualties and were strewn everywhere. Sadly, we also lost approx 4.8 meters of picket fence line when the creek flooded. Some pickets have been ruined or blown away, but we will have these replaced in time." I cannot express enough gratitude to the earth angels who came to the initial clean up of LAP. The complete selflessness shown by the following people will never be forgotten. It makes me very proud to live in such an amazing community of fabulous people. We may not all have family nearby, but these events show that strong bonds are formed, linking us forever. I can now look at the playground knowing that with the assistance of WRC we will not only restore it to its former self, but something even better. I can’t wait for the kids to get back to playing there.

CYCLONE DECISIONS

REFLECTING ON YASSI I spoke to a friend who has owned a tax and Financial Planning business in Innisfail for over 20 years about his reflections on TC Yassi. He said that looking back after 5 years, the saddest thing was the people who got through the cyclone but then lost their business or home due to making poor financial decisions. The key here is that whilst these people were usually good decision makers, the stress of the unknown and not having a good, independent second opinion led to their financial PMS 2768 PMS 2728 PMS 382 ruin insurers, assessors, c 100 | mDealing 90 | y13 | k61 with c 96 | m 66 | y0 | k0 c 28 | m 0 | y92 | k0 builders, grant applications etc is not

something we usually do and puts us outside our comfort zone. This is not a good position from which to make what are often life changing decisions. THE POWER OF SOCIAL MEDIA IN A DISASTER When Jo Sweeney (who normally works as a creative strategist) was given the job to ‘spread the word’ about Fish D’vine providing free food for the community after the cyclone she certainly didn’t realise what would happen next. “One minute I’m getting the message out to as many people as possible in the community about the free food, the next minute I’m getting messages from local photographer Andrew Pattinson (who was stuck in Brisbane) to assist him in sourcing a generator and get vehicles siphoned on the ground to enable the Whitsunday Family Practice pop-up hospital to treat over 100 patients... all of this took place before the military had even arrived” Jo said. From there things snowballed, with both locals and people outside the region sending Facebook messages; people needing help, family that couldn’t contact loved ones and people outside the region wanting to help. Jo created Volunteer Whitsundays public Facebook group to consolidate all the enquiries she was receiving into one portal for people to have access to help beyond the conventional 1300 numbers. Alongside local community champions Tracey Lord, Chris Pannan, Heather Batrick and Andrew Sloane the group commenced working bees to help people clean up their yards. “We had no shortage of people post to our page needing assistance and so many chainsaw hero’s and volunteers stepped up to assist those in need, I was moved daily from tears of sadness to tears of joy” Jo said.

TO DONATE MONEY TO TRACEY LORD’S FUNDRAISING CAMPAIGN: www.gofundme.com/volunteerwhitsundays

The 1300 numbers were bottle necked, people went to Facebook in droves and the Volunteer Whitsundays group was contacted by people outside of the region trying to bring aid into Whitsundays, with most charity buildings being damaged it was truly chaos on the ground. The group identified the need to have the stigma and shame removed around people needing food, amenities and furniture and Jo came up with the concept of a central ‘Give Centre’ and approached the Rotary Club of Airlie Beach to operate a stand alone space where locals could come and access goods with no questions asked. “It’s been heartwarming to see the community step up and work together, Whitsunday Neighbourhood Centre donated all of their relief goods to the Give Centre and our Volunteer Whitsunday helpers were able to work with the local Rotary Club to deliver a wonderful initiative to the people that need assistance to get back on their feet. I truly hope that Government consider the power social media has in the face of a natural disaster, there’s been lots of lessons and insight to be gained from the service we’ve provided.” As a group Volunteer Whitsundays isn’t going anywhere, the team is excited about all the ways they can help the beautiful Whisunday region. When Jo spoke of the groups plans of the future she stated “there’s still so much to be done to get the region cleaned up and back into shape for locals and tourists to continue enjoying paradise.”

ENDEAVOUR FOUNDATION No retreat! WHEN TROPICAL CYCLONE DEBBIE UNLEASHED HER FURY ACROSS THE WHITSUNDAYS THERE WERE MANY FOR WHOM BEATING A RETREAT WASN’T AN OPTION.

Notably, four people with a disability who live at Endeavour Foundation’s Cannonvale site, and two staff members, had no choice but to batten down the hatches for three long days.

everyone was safe and well. We’re so proud of how well staff and residents pulled together and did everything they could to make a difficult time bearable.

“A cyclone is terrifying for anyone, but particularly if you have limited understanding of what’s happening and really struggle with changes to your routine. I have to say, the residents were absolute champions throughout,” Amanda from Endeavour Foundation said.

“There’s no doubt everyone’s resilience was tested! Thanks to no running water or electricity we had to use a bit of creativity, leading to us hand washing clothes and towels in the rain! But, most importantly, we made it out the other side without any ill effects. That’s of course due, in no small measure, to colleagues who travelled from across Queensland with generators, food, water and – crucially – their helping hands, and likewise the Whitsundays community who rallied to our aid. Particular thanks to Volunteer Whitsundays for their donations of gas cookers

“Likewise, despite having their own families and properties to tend to, our colleagues Maree and Terry bunkered down with the residents because they, like the many people who arrived in the aftermath, were determined to ensure that

and kind offers of assistance to anyone we support in the community.”

L

Still busy repairing damage to the property, with trees, fencing, signage and the like having fallen prey to devastating winds and torrential rain, the local team said it was a miracle that the old school house on the site although “far from being built to cyclone standard, still withstood everything thrown at it”. “We feel very fortunate that all our customers and staff are well and healthy, not to mention feeling privileged to be part of such a wonderful community. We hope everyone affected is able to get back on their feet very soon.”

IF TROPICAL CYCLONE DEBBIE LEFT ONE PIECE OF POSITIVITY IN HER PATH, IT’S THAT PEOPLE WILL PREVAIL. A heartfelt thank you to the QFES, QAS, SES and ADF who were deployed away from family and friends to come to our rescue during our time of need. To the organisations who have supported our region through donations and to Ergon for responding rapidly to restore our region’s power as quickly as possible. To the wonderful members of our community who went above and beyond to help others, and to the members of the public who weren’t complacent and prepared themselves sufficiently to survive this event.

WE SALUTE YOU!

TC DEBBIE RECOVERY FEATURE Lure’s Marketing Manager, Joscelyn O’Keefe explained, “The clean-up was non-stop, our wonderful team worked every day, up to 12 hours per day, to ensure the marina was picture-perfect. We sourced a large generator to be able to power the venue, but thankfully the power came on the day before the event. “The most humbling part was seeing how the wedding industry rallied together to support one another. Our suppliers were simply incredible and we can’t thank them enough.” “D’Vine Catering, as most people know, spent days upon days feeding the community, and although their own supplies were running low, they still managed to cater the event in spectacular fashion. “The Event Company, they had flooding of their own to contend with and trees down, but they still managed to style the venue beautifully. “The wedding industry in the Whitsundays is still very much open for business. While there may be some island destinations who will need time to refurbish, you can still have a Whitsunday wedding here on the mainland,” she said. The guests celebrated the nuptials with sunset drinks at Lure on the foreshore, a relaxed setting where guests commented that you couldn’t tell a cyclone had passed through only a week prior. Joscelyn commented, “Full credit to Bhrett and Jamie, they were determined to continue with the celebrations as planned, which ended up being a muchneeded day of love and laughter for their family and friends as well. “They enjoyed a day of normalcy, a day to be happy and to celebrate two young people getting married in their home town.”

Loved-up Whitsunday locals, Bhrett Davies and Jamie Bell, were determined not to let ‘Debbie’ rain on their parade. The couple, who met years ago at Proserpine High School, were due to be married only 10 days after Cyclone Debbie had left a devastating trail of destruction and debris throughout Airlie Beach. But thanks to the resilience of their friends, family and the Airlie Beach community, there was plenty of love, laughter and happily ever after. On those fateful days in March where the storm clouds finally passed and the sun shone through, Bhrett and Jamie picked themselves up and pressed on with their plans to be wed. The first course of action was to find accommodation for many of their guests, as the hotel they were booked into had sustained substantial damage. The Heart Hotel came to the rescue and were able to accommodate all of the visitors needing somewhere to stay. The couple’s function venue, Lure at Abell Point Marina, moved heaven and earth to ensure the day was simply perfect.

With the cyclone still raw in everyone’s minds, it seemed that hearing children’s laughter and getting together over a few beers and a bbq would be a distant dream for many Whitsunday locals. The team at the Reef Gateway Hotel, however, had other ideas.

Manager Mark, “and we wanted to offer the community a space to talk about everything that had happed. We are known as a meeting place, a town hall if you like, so were happy to be the host” Free beer, wine, soft drink and bbq was open to all for the afternoon. It was a beautiful blue sky day, the kids jumped on the bouncy castle with free slushies, the adults grooved to the live music and everyone had the chance to be happy.

They looked at the heartbroken community, could see we all needed cheering up and so decided to host a special day to help us all recover. The Recovery Party, held eight days after the event on Thursday 13th April gave the community the boost it needed.

A heartfelt thank you to all the local businesses and individual volunteers who contributed to this special day.

END OF FINANCIAL YEAR Now is when you should be thinking about your tax, especially If you’re self-employed.

your taxable income prior to 30th June and plan out your future tax payments or receipts.

Most people leave tax time until after August when they go to see their accountant, tally up the previous financial year and get the bad news about how much they have to pay or the bonus of a refund. The smarter way to do it is to check where you sit before the end of financial year on 30th June and get an estimate of what your tax return will look like. This then gives you the opportunity to change

If you want to reduce your tax bill or increase your refund, you may be able to pre pay interest on loans, bring forward tax deductions for expenses generally payable early in the new financial year or put money into super. You may be able to play with your debtors and creditors if self-employed or write off business items, especially after the cyclone.

Tax should be something we all watch throughout the year and not just on the annual trip to the accountant. Getting to know how IAS and BAS relates to your annual Income Tax is crucial as it effects your cash flow. This year more than ever due to TC Debbie it’s time to start planning and managing your tax. friend or foe? Facebook and other social media sites make it easier than ever for people to communicate and display their personal life to a large audience. If you are involved in family law court proceedings, splashing your views across social media can be risky business, and you may even be committing an offence. Under the Family Law Act people are restricted from publishing any details regarding proceedings, including any information that identifies a party to proceedings or even a witness. This means that a simple comment on Facebook could land you in hot water – if the comment identifies a party in proceedings. There is also the obvious risk of another party using something you have published on Facebook (or other social media sites) against you in Court. For example, posting comments

that are degrading or that contradict evidence you have previously provided to the Court or even posting a photo that demonstrates that you have breached an Order will not assist you in the court room. These issues are becoming increasingly common in family law proceedings and where relevant, such evidence can make or break your case. Family law matters are often highly emotive and full of conflict and it is easy to “post” a rant about your ex partner without properly thinking through the consequences. The best thing to remember – using the old mantra we were taught as children, but giving it a modern twist is “if you don’t have something nice to say don’t publish, email, text, tweet, Instagram, Facebook, Snapchat or say anything at all”.

Contact our office on 49630880 to make an appointment with one of our five experienced family lawyers, or to register to attend a free, no obligation, information evening in Mackay on 16 May, 13 June or 11 July. www.mckaysfamilylaw.com | familymackay@mckayslaw.comwww.corelife.com.au

Kay Nyenuh

COVER STORY

MUSCLE GARDEN

From tiny acorns grow mighty oaks. But it doesn’t happen overnight. Those acorns require nutrition, care and attention to flourish. Muscle Garden was born from this very philosophy, explained by owner and personal trainer, Kay Nyenuh. “Our body is a garden of muscles; more than 600 of them grouped into cardiac, smooth and skeletal. If we don’t tend to these muscles, just like plants in a garden, they won’t grow or flourish. And sadly for humans, sometimes the result can be obesity, osteoporosis, diabetes, low self-esteem and more. Every person has the potential to become that mighty oak and live the fit and healthy life that they deserve, it just takes movement and the right food choices,” he said. Looking at Kay, you may think he was naturally blessed with huge muscles, but this couldn’t be further from the truth he says. “I was actually quite skinny! I played basketball at a national level in Ghana, but it wasn’t until I started lifting weights that my muscles grew.” Kay was born in Liberia on the west coast of Africa. As Africa’s first and oldest modern republic, the country battled many years of civil war. As a result, Kay fled to Ghana while he was still young. photography by Norina Jane

As he got older, he co-founded a literacy organisation with a friend, dedicated to helping school children in Ghana.

COVER STORY

“The schools were over-crowded and many children were leaving school not being able to spell their own name, let alone read. We helped to teach literacy and numeracy as well as feed children breakfast so they had the energy to learn,” he said. Kay also worked in I.T in Ghana, and began lifting weights at a local gym. The instant gains he could see appealed and soon he found his passion in fitness. “It was nothing to me to workout in a gym for three hours, I loved it. But I saw how other people struggled to find the motivation to exercise. I thought to myself, if I could do it for them so that they could reap the benefits, I would, but I can’t. So I began to think of other ways I could help people. That’s where the thought of becoming a personal trainer came from.” In search of a better life, Kay moved to Australia in 2009 and moved to Mackay where he had a friend who was able to help him settle in the community. He started small, group training clients outdoors in local parks, before eventually expanding to his gym on Victoria Street, where his clients are his second family. “The biggest stereotype for me to bypass is that people see me and think of me as a big scary guy. But that couldn’t be further from the truth. I’m actually a bit goofy and love to have a laugh. At the gym I sing along

and dance to songs clients don't usually expect me to dance to, and crack jokes to make everyone laugh. Whilst I take my job very seriously, it’s important to see people laugh and enjoy their workout. When they are laughing, they aren’t thinking about the pain. I’m driven by the results I see in my clients.” Celebrating five years in business, Kay’s motivation to succeed is driven from his family. With wife Jessica, the pair have a two-year-old son; who is Kay’s ray of sunshine. “Before my son was born, I didn’t take a day off in three years. Now, he is my priority. I lost my dad at a young age so I know what it was like to grow up without a father, and it’s why taking time out to be with my son is so important. My family is the reason I became a business owner, so I could have the freedom to spend time with them and so they don’t have to go without. They can have the things I couldn’t. That’s what drives me,” he said. Kay’s fundamental message is to embrace movement. When he’s not at the gym, you’ll find him running up and down sets of stairs, climbing the region’s mountains or doing burpees on the sand at his boot camps. Offering one-on-one personal training, affordable gym memberships, group boot camps and fitness challenges, Muscle Garden works. The only question remaining is, how bad do you want it?

AIRLIE FITNESS

Your future is created by what you do today, not by what you say you will do tomorrow. The time is now, seize the moment and let Airlie Fitness guide you in building a better body. Manager, Chris Elms, believes the magical part of working in the fitness industry is seeing members achieve their goals. “It still amazes me to see how a person’s self-confidence can improve dramatically with even a small amount of physical activity. Happiness becomes part of their lifestyle. It’s the best part of my day to see someone leave the gym with a smile on their face, even if they didn’t come in with one!” Chris has been with Airlie Fitness for five years and is also one of the personal trainers and group fitness instructors. His introduction to the business was both a bit of luck mixed with determination. “Once finishing a traineeship with another gym, I wanted to build my client base for personal training. I dropped flyers in letter boxes and coincidentally one of the letter boxes I dropped my flyer into was that of owners, Corey and Wendy Whibley. I started with them a week later and have been loving it ever since,” Chris said No stranger to a little cross-dressing, well a Little Red Riding Costume anyway, Chris loves to amp up his group fitness classes by randomly

turning up in costume. He’s been seen in everything from an inflatable Santa suit to a giraffe onesie and a clown morph suit; all in the name of getting a laugh and those endorphins pumping. Being active and on his feet for most of the day, Chris has a self-confessed love of shoes, with a collection of more than 20. He also loves anything Seinfeld, with an episode before bed being a nightly ritual. When he’s not working, Chris is a fond follower of Rugby League and likes to get out for a hit of golf or even the occasional game of table tennis. He spends as much time as he can with his fiancée, Sam, whom he proposed to last year in the Bahamas. Three great locations with just one membership, you can find Airlie Fitness in Proserpine, Jubilee Pocket and Cannonvale. Remember, good things come to those who sweat. photography by Norina Jane

Smile Makers Whitsundays DR PRASHANT KULKARNI

Smile; because happy will never go out of fashion. If dental imperfections are preventing you from flashing your best fashion accessory, visit Cannonvale’s modern dental specialists, Smile Makers. Owned and operated by Dr. Prashant Kulkarni, Smile Makers is celebrating two years in business. While the first year was challenging, Prashant thanks the local community for welcoming his business and family into the Whitsundays. “My wife, Ketaki and I welcomed our baby daughter, Meehika during our first year of business. Being a new father as well as the sole dentist at Smile Makers, the first year was very busy and challenging, but with welcoming community support our second year has been fantastic. “Our team at Smile Makers is what makes the difference for our patients. They are very caring and professional. I’ve been fortunate to have this team support the business, who are still with me two years later providing the same wonderful service. Our personal service is what we strive to provide. I make myself available for patients any time of day or night and no matter how we grow in the future, it is this personal approach which will always be our main priority,” Prashant said. photography by Norina Jane

Watching a patient’s confidence grow is what gives Prashant the most joy from his work. “A person’s confidence can be greatly changed by their smile. I have seen patients come in suffering from depression due to teeth they are embarrassed of. It is something special to see their face light up and their confidence shine when we improve their smile,” he said. Although he became an Australian citizen, when it comes to cricket, Prashant’s heart is still with India. A highlight for him was hosting former Indian wicket keeper, M.S.K Prasad, for dinner at his home in the Whitsundays. He also had the opportunity to meet Rahul Dravid in Mackay last year. “When India A wrapped up the Quadrangular series against Australia A, I actually closed the surgery for half a day so I could watch the match in Mackay. Meeting Rahul Dravid and M.S.K Prasad were incredible experiences. In India, these players are so popular that you would never be able to get close to them.” Smile Makers can assist with all general dentistry, apart from implants, which Prashant hopes to bring to the surgery later this year. The business has an orthodontist who visits every six weeks. Smile Makers offer interest-free payment plans and try to make its services as affordable as possible, to make the perfect smile an achievable dream for all families. www.corelife.com.au 49

When flu and sickness are the kryptonite to leading a healthy life, we rely on the super men from the GP Superclinics to power us back to health. With more than 170 years of combined medical experience, there is no shortage of expertise, passion and specialist advice from this group of caring doctors. Founder of the GP Superclinic Group, Dr John McIntosh, is the inspirational leader and educator of the clinics doctors. He provides structured training for doctors at all levels, including the pre-entry exams for overseas doctors (PESCI) to the AMC and specialist GP exams of the FRACGP. Providing this direct and structured training at every stage of the doctors’ career secures their professional future and improves the quality of services for the community. His mentoring extends toward encouraging each doctor to pursue further areas of expertise, to bring greater levels of professional specialisation to the community and to further the professional opportunities for his doctors. His team offers support to organisations, such as Queensland Health, who are stretched to meet the demand in mental health and drug and alcohol rehabilitation services to address gaps in the community.

thankfully becoming the status quo as Dr John mentions. “Only a few years ago, when you wanted to see a doctor, you were often told that you would need to wait days. In our opinion, that just wasn’t good enough. If you’re sick, you need to be seen as urgently as possible,” he said. Dr John says, “We modified systems and have trained our doctors in efficient handling of patients to enable a better service to everyone. We never accepted the status quo and immediately guaranteed same day appointments. We believe long waiting times are disrespectful, so if a patient has been waiting longer than 30 minutes, we offer the services of another doctor who can see them sooner. We opened seven days per week, lengthened our hours from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. and provide walk-in services for lacerations and acute illness where people need to be seen immediately.” The clinic also has an app where

Since its inception, the GP Superclinics under the direction of Dr John and his wife, Elizabeth, have challenged the level of acceptable practice within the industry. Their initiatives to reduce waiting times, allow for walk-in appointments and guarantee same-day appointments have pioneered a greater level of service in Mackay, which is now

patients can check waiting times, make appointments and check-in, saving both the patient and reception staff valuable time. Providing service when people need it most has been the driving factor for the GP Superclinic’s initiatives. “We are the only practice to provide 24 hours of cover, 7 days per week; including house calls with the Superclinic’s Dr to U Mackay service,” Dr John said. Positivity, a pleasant working environment and a supportive team atmosphere are held in high regard at the GP Superclinics, with it being an important area of focus for John and Elizabeth. “Elizabeth and I train the doctors and all staff in creating positive mindsets and eliminating negative words and actions in the workplace. This prevents gossip, sarcasm and denigration with staff finding constructive solutions to any situation which arises. The aim is to have happy, healthy, positive doctors and staff that will be resilient, supportive and provide the best service possible!” Dr John also broadens his training to cover non-medical areas, such as personal and business finance, productivity and time management to be

able to lead productive, successful lives outside of work. So successful is this process that many of Dr John’s protégé doctors are inspired to follow in his footsteps and set up their own quality practices which is great for the community. This can be to the detriment of the practice but is a great reflection of the success of Dr John’s training. With 33 years himself as a GP, Dr John’s passion has stemmed from a long career dedicated to helping people. He has assisted with aid work in South Pacific islands, Indonesia, Nepal and Africa in leprosy units, mission hospital and delivered babies in huts on mud floors. He taught nonmedical aid workers how to manage acute illness with limited medications and complete isolation in Vanuatu. In our local community, John single-handedly created the Mater Private After hours service to improve after hours services 20 years ago and was a founding member of the Youth Information and Referral Service for homeless and disadvantaged youth. His care for the community is a reflection of the care the GP Superclinic doctors have for their patients. With a blend of professionalism and positivity, it is an environment where patients truly feel respected, heard and cared for. photography by Norina Jane

Master Butchers

THE SAUSAGE KING OF THE WHITSUNDAYS! Don Cameron, AKA The Sausage King, is as well-known for his award-winning sausages as he is for his kind and charismatic nature. Quietly supporting most sausage sizzles and providing meat trays for raffles around the Whitsundays, Don and his partner Karen, are business owners with a commendable community spirit. The couple moved from Tasmania to the Whitsundays in March 2009, and opened their first butchery in Stewart Drive with only one casual staff member. Don has a passion for renovating rundown shops in good positions and used this skill to regenerate the Stewart Drive Butcher, bringing it back life. Through his hard work and dedication the couple now own two shops, employ 19 staff and operate a thriving wholesale section servicing many local restaurants. When he’s not buying stock, visiting local restaurants to catch-up with chefs or dealing with day to day operations of his business, Don likes to play golf or travel the country. His favourite times are when he can escape with Karen, visit new places, try fine food, drink fine wine and of course, play a round of golf!

At work, however, Don says the businesses would not be what they are today without the support and dedication of his highly skilled staff. Pictured below are two of his most long-term employees. To his right is Anthony Whyte who looks after the retail side of the business at Master Butcher Whitsunday and has 27 years of experience in the industry. On the left, is Brandon Dearnley, responsible for the wholesale side of the business and with a background in processing ham and bacon. Looking to the future, Don confesses he loves a challenge. “I like to be busy,” he says, “I don’t like being idle because I tend to go to sleep if I stop moving too long. I’ve been known to nod off in many chairs!” With this in mind, Don is excited about expanding the processing area to manufacture more smallgoods. The reputation for their gourmet bacon, ham and cabana has spread so much so that they are getting enquiries from across the region. “With our quality products and superior reputation hopefully we will continue to grow in the future and create more jobs for local people.”

Ray McQuillan MINESPEC PARTS

“There is only one boss and that’s the customer. He or she can fire everyone in that company from the top down, simply by spending their money elsewhere.” This is a philosophy etched deeply within the focus of Minespec Parts and one which General Manager of Operations, Ray McQuillan, reminds himself of daily. “Our mantra, ‘turn your surplus into purpose’ is all based around what we can do for the customer to lower their repair and maintenance costs and to ensure the cost per tonne mined is favourable. “Quality control and quality assurance is of utmost importance to our business, to ensure the client receives longevity from work carried out on their equipment,” he said. Ray started his apprenticeship as a diesel mechanic in 1981 and has worked with heavy machinery since. From remote areas in the Northern Territory to overseas in the United States of America, his span of experience ranges from underground and manufacturing to earth moving and heavy mine haulage. His position involves operational management across all facets of Minespec Parts, from supporting employees on the ground to supervising contract labour; inspecting incoming components and machinery, ensuring quality assurance and customer relations. “One of the areas we pride ourselves in at Minespec Parts is the end result which the customer receives. Through our stringent dismantling process and quality assurance measures, the parts which we ship to our customers is in the best condition possible. We have engineered unique ways to ship parts and machinery to ensure their protection while also saving the client money through space saving initiatives. It is an area we receive very good feedback from. “I also pride myself in efficient and informative customer response to all enquiries received. Without our strong client base we wouldn’t have the successful business we have,” Ray said. Married to his wife, Megan, for 20 years, Ray says his marriage is his greatest passion.

“She is my rock. We have three grown children and enjoy hearing about their exciting life experiences while guiding them as they go. I have always been a hard worker, never take a day off and throw myself right into my work and Megan has always understood and supported me along the way,” he said. Ray is a keen fisherman and enjoys combining travel with wetting a line. “I have spent a lot of time fishing in Arnhem Land in the Northern Territory where I worked for a long period of time. I have a trip planned to Bensbach Wildlife Lodge in the Western Province of Papua New Guinea for a nine day fishing trip in June, it will be my second trip back there, it’s just awesome. “I travelled around the world on my own back in 1994, which was an experience in itself. Now, my wife and I like to road trip. Before starting at Minespec Parts last year, we drove to Melbourne and took our car across on the Spirit of Tasmania and drove around Tassie. It was a fantastic adventure,” he said. Wherever possible, Minespec Parts supports the local community in Nebo and supports local businesses in the Mackay Region. “We sponsor various activities locally and interstate, including rodeos, drag racing, Nitro Phoenix’s Damian Muscat and MMA cage fighting. Minespec Parts owner, Simon Ross, regularly goes out of his way to engage with the local community to see what he can do to support the area and does what he can to support people from different walks of life. It’s very humbling for me to see and makes me proud to be associated with his business. It’s satisfying to see the business put so much back into the local community,” Ray said. Simon is also passionately involved with support for the Leukemia Foundation and Multiple Sclerosis. Minespec Parts work with its Customers management, maintenance, warehouse and audit teams to deliver new opportunities to turn idle assets and surplus parts into additional revenue streams that can be reinvested back into your business. Locally owned and operated, strategically located in Nebo, the gateway to some of the world’s largest mining resources, is it time you contacted Minespec Parts to find out how you can turn your surplus into purpose?

KNP PLUMBING AND GAS Have you thought about what happens after you flush? Probably not. When the plumbing is working, it doesn’t get a second thought. But when a full house is preventing your royal flush, you’ll need the services of a plumber, and fast. Locally owned and operated, KNP Plumbing and Gas provides expert residential and commercial plumbing and gasfitting services. Owner, Kendal Nash, started his plumbing career locally on Hamilton Island in 2000. A fully qualified plumber for more than 10 years, Kendal moved to the mainland in 2003, and began KNP Plumbing and Gas six years ago. His team are experienced at undertaking gas and plumbing maintenance and repairs; gas, electric, heat pump and hot water installations; roof repairs and gutter maintenance, blocked drains, bathroom renovations and installations. Kendal believes that in a service-based industry, reliability and integrity are crucial in ensuring wordof-mouth referrals. “It doesn’t matter if you’re Mrs Brown with a leaky tap or a large body corporate; we deliver the same high level of service to every client. Reliability is important to us, we do as we say we will and treat our clients as we would like to be treated ourselves,” he said. This commitment to friendly and reliable service shone through in a recent Whitsunday community poll, where KNP Plumbing and Gas were voted via Facebook as the Whitsunday’s best plumber. Kendal is a recently married man and father, married to Alice, who is the business’ Office Manager. “She is the unsung hero behind the scenes, and ensures our team runs efficiently. She has been pivotal to the success and growth of the business,” Kendal said. The couple met at a mates house, watching an AFL footy game. They are both avid Adelaide Crows fans. “I picked her up for our first date and I saw a newspaper clipping on her fridge. It had the Captain of the Adelaide Crows taking a mark. I knew right then and there that she was the girl for me,” Kendal said. Take care of your plumbing and it will take care of you. For regular maintenance, or emergency repairs when the poo really hits the fan, call KNP Plumbing and Gas for efficient service you can rely on.

10 YEARS AND GROWING STRONGER, THE QCCS MACKAY CUTTERS HAVE PROVEN TO BE A STRONG FORCE ON THE FIELD, WINNING A PREMIERSHIP AND DEVELOPING INTERNATIONAL REPRESENTATIVE PLAYERS. Unlike many other provincial clubs who receive big funding from wealthy leagues clubs, Mackay relies on its loyal supporters, generous sponsors and every bum on a seat during Mackay’s home games, to keep the club operational. So come on Mackay, let’s show these guys we are behind them!

A proud history. Spanning back to the inaugural competition in 1919, Mackay has had a long and proud history of rugby league. The new game, which was a breakaway form of the sport from rugby union, was taking the southern parts of the state and NSW by storm. Following the growing popularity of this new form of the game, an advertisement appeared in the Daily Mercury in 1918, wanting to know if anyone was interested in playing rugby league. Four teams were formed, Railways, All Blacks, Rangers and Magpies. The only surviving team from 1919 is the Magpies, who are approaching their 100th year. It was not until 1934 that Mackay won its first intercity title winning the Carlton shield.

Proud to be the 2017 Principal Sponsor of the Mackay Cutters and supporters of the Change the Game initiative

From then, Mackay has had a strong history of success in the domestic competitions, particularly in the mid-1990s, and has become a heartland for rugby lleague. From as far west as Moranbah and up north to Proserpine and the Whitsundays, Mackay’s District Rugby League has had a knack of nurturing young players into the game’s superstars; Paul Bowman, Neville Costigan, Josh Hannay, Shannon Hegarty, Ben Barba, Josh Hoffman, Dane Gagai and Daly Cherry-Evans to name but a few players from this region who grew up playing on our local grounds, with our local clubs, and who went on to represent their club, state and country at the highest levels of competition.

Celebrating 10 years The Mackay Cutters organisation was formally announced on the 19th of November, 2007, when the Queensland Cup competition expanded to include teams from the north. The Cutters were integrated along with the newly formed Northern Pride into the North Queensland Cowboys NRL feeder system and have long been considered a valuable proving ground for up-and-coming talent in the North Queensland region.

Players who have become a ‘cut above.’ In its short tenure, the Mackay Cutters organisation has a proud list of players that has represented the Mackay and surrounding areas for a decade.

Proud to support the Mackay Cutters!

week against Easts Tigers who defeated them 31-18. The Cutters got a second chance and took it against the Ipswich Jets, defeating them and moving on to the Preliminary Final against the Northern Pride, who also were the defending Premiers from 2012.

Grant Rovelli, one of the best the region has ever seen, the mercurial halfback who has played rugby league at the NRL and International level, he captained the Southern Suburbs Sharks to the 2013 and 2014, Mackay District Rugby League A-Grade Premierships, and was the 2012 QRL Representative Player of the Year Liam Taylor, the most prolific points scorer in Cutters history. A very talented player who perfected his kick on the soccer fields before turning to rugby league, he can create points from nothing and is always instrumental whenever he pulls on a jersey. Michael Morgan, Jason Taumalolo and Matt Scott. These men are synonymous with rugby league in North Queensland, and seeing all three of these men not only achieve domestic success with the Mackay Cutters organisation, but seeing them win the 2015 NRL Premiership with the Cowboys, the ultimate boon for North Queensland Rugby League, is something Mackay, and the entire of North Queensland can be immensely proud of. These men showed talent, commitment and dedication to the team, themselves, and the North Queensland community. Their time at the Mackay Cutters, and their continued success at the highest levels of our sport is testimony to the love of footy in this great region, and the talent it produces. It goes to show the wealth and talent of rugby league players that Mackay and the surrounding regions have to offer, from their earliest beginnings in Under 7’s footy, right through to NRL and State of Origin level.

2013 Premiership Champions The Mackay Cutters crowning achievement is winning the 2013 Queensland Rugby League Premiership over the Easts Tigers. The season will long be remembered for the close battle of the two North Queensland teams, the Mackay Cutters and the Northern Pride, who went tooth and nail for the Minor Premiership. The Pride eventually proved themselves the better team of the regular season as they won the Minor Premiership, but Mackay finished second on the ladder to show the power of North Queensland’s talent at the time in beating out the Brisbane clubs to the top two spots in the competition. Mackay headed into the Finals full of confidence, but stumbled in the first

QCCS Mackay Cutters CEO, Troy Rovelli, commented “We were fortunate enough to have a lot of current day NRL-level talent in our squad at that time; Kalifa Faifai Loa, Bureta Faraimo and Jason Taumalolo, and they all got on the scoreboard for us as we booked our place in the Grand Final with a 20-6 win.” The QCCS Mackay Cutters played the QRL Grand Final against the Easts Tigers at North Ipswich Reserve, and Easts got off to a good start leading 8-0 early. “Bureta Faraimo showed his immense talent in scoring two tries for us to get us back in the contest, but Easts managed to lead at halftime. “The second half was Michael Morgan’s time to shine, he picked up a wayward pass and raced half the field to score a try and put us in front, and he kicked the field goal to keep us ahead after when Easts had gotten back level, before Kalifa Faifai Loa scored the try to put the result beyond doubt and give Mackay its maiden Premiership. “One of the key factors, as sad as it may be, was the passing of young Alex Elisala at the start of the season. “The pain of losing a really good mate seemed to galvanise the players in a way that made them more like brothers than just team mates. They played for one another, they dug deep, for themselves, for each other, and for the spirit of Alex, and I truly believe that deep, unbreakable bond was the factor in winning that 2013 QRL Premiership,” Troy said.

A commitment to mental health awareness “This club has faced and overcome many challenges over the years on many different fronts. None more tragic than the losses of Alex Elisala, Hayden Butler and Regan Grieve. These young men will never be forgotten and will be forever etched in our hearts.” www.corelife.com.au 59

HEAD COACH STEVE SHEPPARD Nicname: Pupp

FOR THE 2017 SEASON, THE QCCS MACKAY CUTTERS WELCOMES HEAD COACH, STEVE SHEPPARD. BACKGROUND Growing up in Mareeba, Cairns, Steve played rugby league from the tiny age of four, with his older brother, Chris. The brothers challenged each other throughout their childhood. Steve then played for the North Queensland Young Guns in Townsville, before moving to Ayr and played for the Burdekin Roosters. Moving briefly back to Cairns, he played for the Northern Pride and was captain-coach for the Mareeba Gladiators and then captain-coach for the Cairns Kangaroos. He moved back to Ayr where he called home with his wife and two daughters and found his passion in coaching, before accepting the position of head coach with the QCCS Mackay Cutters. Steve has an extensive background in youth and junior development, and has part-time coached for more than 10 years in various senior coaching roles. He was the assistant coach to the North Queensland Cowboys National Youth U20’s team and the assistant coach for the winning Queensland State of Origin U18’s team. “I’m grateful for this opportunity to lead this talented Cutters Club from strength to strength. It is my aim to turn the club into an even greater force to be reckoned with, in particular bring consistency into our game play producing stronger results. We have plenty of great players coming through the ranks, the future looks bright.”

WHO IS THE GREATEST PLAYER OF ALL TIME? “Jonathan Thurston would have to be the best the game has seen, closely followed by Slater, Cronk and Smith. They are all handy players and outstanding leaders. WHICH COACH DO YOU LOOK UP TO? “In terms of great coaches, I look up to Jason Demetriou, the assistant coach for the Brisbane Broncos. He led the Northern Pride to victory for two consecutive minor premierships and I admire his progression through the coaching ranks.” WHAT PASSIONS OR HOBBIES DO YOU HAVE OUTSIDE OF RUGBY LEAGUE? “I am a part-owner of a few race horses. I would have had ownership in around 15 horses over the years, it’s a bit of a hobby of mine.”

TEAM MANAGER TONY GAMBIE

While play on the field is unpredictable, the ground work before each match happens religiously in the background. QCCS Mackay Cutters Team Manager, Tony Gambie, ensures that the planning and preparation for the season is in hand for the under 18s, under 20s and the Intrust team. While the position itself doesn’t receive a lot of attention, it’s a huge task, ensuring gear for each team is up to scratch, registration and organisation of each team member for travel and overseeing the running of the club on most levels. His contribution has been honoured by the club, being named as ‘Clubperson of the Year’ on multiple occasions, due to the immense passion he displays for both the club and the sport of rugby league. Tony has been with the Mackay Cutters since its inception 10 years ago. His greatest team moment was being the manager of the 2013 team which won the Intrust Super Cup. A momentous occasion he hopes to be able to replicate this year. “It was one of the best feelings, celebrating the win with an unreal group of people.”

A town of history, beauty and prosperity THE BEAUTIFUL TOWN OF BOWEN, THE OLDEST TOWN IN QUEENSLAND, WAS FIRST ESTABLISHED IN 1861. IT HAS A LONG AND COLOURFUL HISTORY, AND IS SITUATED AT THE TOP OF THE WHITSUNDAYS WITH ITS OWN, VERY DISTINCT IDENTITY.

Walking around Bowen you can see this rich history etched on the buildings in the form of murals that colourfully display the diversity and industry that shaped the town. Painting life through art and telling the story of the town’s unique identity. Another symbol of Bowen’s unique identity, that has reached national acclaim, is the Bowen mango. A 10m model of this proudly marks the entrance to the town. Mangos were first introduced to Bowen by India in the late 1800’s, brought over to trade in this unknown, exotic fruit. The harbormaster collected the seeds and planted them on his own property. Since then the Kensington mango has become widely known as the Bowen mango and Bowen’s most prestigious export. Of course Bowen’s reputation for growing some of the country’s best vegetables does not stop at mangoes. The booming farming industry is known as the town’s biggest economic driver and later on in this feature we take the time to sit down with Carl Walker, President of the Bowen Growers Association, to find out more. Bowen also has an excellent reputation for supplying the best seafood from its booming fishing industry and is known as an absolutely stunning place

Opening in 1948, the Summergarden Cinema is a heritage listed site and is built in the style of an old Californian picture house. It is an iconic landmark in Bowen, located at Queen’s Beach, sharing a rich, fond history with the region. Core Life Magazine met with Ben Beluca who has owned Summer Garden Cinema for the past 55 years. He takes us back in history to a time when the cinema was open-air and very basic. “Back when I first started,” He says, “we didn’t even have a roof! The previous owners started putting a roof on slowly, working towards the screen, when I arrived I finished it off. The toilets were outside in those days too, so if it was raining everyone would get wet running across the yard!” Almost 60 years on and Ben has seen a lot of changes. He has loved watching the cinema evolve and says his favourite part of the job is the amazing people gets to meet.

to visit. The area boasts eight incredible beaches, hidden bays, smooth sandstone outcrops and a choice of first-class holiday accommodation, dining options and outdoor activities. It is no wonder then, that Bowen is considered a major destination on the tourist map. Visitors come to the ‘top of the Whitsundays’ for its seclusion, its peaceful tranquility and its reputation for being one of Queensland’s hidden gems. Back in 2008, however, Bowen suddenly became famous around the world when it starred in the highly acclaimed movie, ‘Australia.’ The town was renamed ‘Bowenwood’ for the duration, when celebrities Nicole Kidman and Hugh Jackman arrived for filming transforming the town into a Hollywood set. Over these six pages, Core Life Magazine, takes a closer look at what makes the heart of Bowen beat. We hear from Whitsunday Mayor, Andrew Willcox, learn more about the vibrant Visitor Information Centre that has over 40,000 visitors a year, the Bowen horse-racing calendar and meet three young Bowen women that have settled locally and are business pioneers for the region. We hope you enjoy the second of our Core Life destination features, encouraging us all to live, shop, buy and visit our local neighbours.

WHITSUNDAY MAYOR ANDREW WILLCOX As Mayor of the Whitsunday Regional Council, and a born and bred Bowen local, I am proud to support this special CORE Life Magazine feature which encourages people to live, shop and buy locally in Bowen. While many of us have experienced personal hardship and financial setbacks since Tropical Cyclone Debbie, I have no doubt that we will push forward with a renewed focus, gaining strength from the many inspiring stories to come from this experience. Council’s focus remains on creating a positive future for Bowen and the broader Whitsunday Region. Since becoming Mayor, one of my main priorities has been the development of a region-wide Economic Development Strategy which will capture the community’s vision and priorities for the region. After recent consultation with our community, Council has almost completed a draft strategy and I encourage you to read it and provide your feedback to help shape your town’s future. We want to know where the community believes Council should focus its resources to help facilitate future industry and economic development. Looking forward, we have some significant projects about to kick off in Bowen, including the refurbishment of our public amenities at Grays Bay, Horseshoe Bay and in the Bowen Town Square. These buildings will have all new fit-outs, improved pathways and will be more accessible and aesthetically pleasing for our residents and visitors. Our Greening and Growing Bowen Project will look at beneficial reuse opportunities for the effluent that comes from our Bowen Sewerage Treatment Plant. We will identify open space areas of Bowen that will benefit from some additional greening to further enhance the look of the town and also provide significant cost savings for Council. There are so many more opportunities on the horizon and we have a strong and united Council to help realise our potential. You can play your part in supporting your town; living, shopping and buying locally supports local jobs and is an investment in our region and your future. It’s also equally as important for local businesses to source their products locally. With your help, we can achieve some positive outcomes for our community.

Mayor Andrew Willcox

BOWEN TOURISM AND BUSINESS Driving along the highway as you arrive in Bowen you cannot help but notice the big yellow mango. The loud, proud mascot of Bowen, that mysteriously disappeared a few years ago as a clever publicity stunt, also marks the location of the Bowen Visitor Information Centre. First opened in the early 2000’s, the well-positioned centre is manned by 4 enthusiastic staff and 20 volunteers and juniors who welcome over 40,000 visitors every year. The staff members play an integral role in the town’s economy. They are the first impression of Bowen, the friendly faces that welcome tourists from around the globe and the people who divert tourists from the highway onto the beaches and into the cafes of Bowen. Spend a day at the Bowen Races BOWEN TURF CLUB’S 2017, WHITSUNDAY CUP RACE DAY, IS SHAPING UP TO BE ONE OF ITS BIGGEST YET. WITH A FULL COMPLIMENT OF LOCAL SPONSORS, AND NOMINATIONS EXPECTED FROM ALL OF NORTH QUEENSLAND AND FURTHER AFIELD, THE CLUB IS LOOKING FORWARD TO HAVING THE COMMUNITY TRACKSIDE AFTER COMPLETING CYCLONE REPAIRS. Whilst the club’s April race day, scheduled a week after TC Debbie, was canceled due to damage to the track and buildings, club President, Stephen Daley is confident continuing repairs will ensure the facility is back on track – and better than ever. The club hope to obtain a replacement race day later in 2017. Along with the upcoming June race day, Bowen Turf Club will also host the Ben Bolt Cup on 5th August – a fantastic day celebrating the iconic Bowen race-horse – Ben Bolt, and incorporating other events such as crab racing, melon and tomato races and more on the day. September 30th sees the return of the famous Bowen Cup for 2017. Known as the race that stops the Whitsundays, the 2017 event is expected to be huge, with marquee bookings already filling up. Bowen Cup also includes the Fashion Event of the Year – LUXE Fashion House Fashions on the Field, with a range of categories and amazing prizes. Marquee bookings are still available for all three races – whether it be for your family celebration, sporting group or corporate function. Bowen Turf Club is a great venue, offering an authentic country racing experience. Contact the club at bowenturfclub@bigpond.com for a marquee booking and info pack. Bowen Turf Club began holding regular race meets over 150 years ago, with the first recorded race meeting in 1846. The club became official in 1863, and has been a pivotal race track on the Queensland racing circuit ever since. Before the advent of television and other technology, the club was the main entertainment venue for the Bowen, Collinsville and greater Whitsunday regions, racing up to 26 times per year. In recent years, the club races four to five times per year, with the biggest race days - the Ben

Bolt Cup and the famous Bowen Cup, between them, still bringing several thousand visitors to Ben Bolt Park. Similarly, in the past twelve months, Bowen Turf Club’s home – Ben Bolt Park has undergone several face lifts and modernisation projects, as the committee seeks to retain the club’s status as a premier race venue in Queensland. As other race clubs have their number of yearly race meeting reduced, Bowen Turf Club retains its minimum four races, and hopes to secure additional picnic races and TAB races in coming years. Sponsorship and corporate marquees enable the Bowen Turf Club to continue financially viable operation. The club combines its aims of promoting country racing in the region with encouraging tourism and commerce that is beneficial to the entire community. All the while providing the Whitsundays with a pivotal venue where the community can come together to socialize and celebrate equestrian based sport.

Le Sorelle Coffee House and Florist, which has been operating for almost four years, is owned by Alex, Viginnia and Bianca. The three sisters draw from their individual strengths and complimentary skills to run their successful local business. Alex is great with the business and finance side of things, Bianca is an amazingly talented florist and Viginnia is super organised and makes running a coffee house look easy! With supportive immediate and extended families, living locally the three sisters couldn’t imagine calling anywhere but Bowen their home. “None of us have had the desire to leave the town,” says Alex, “We all married in Bowen and have established homes. We have our family and now our own kids/nieces and nephews too.” Since they were little their parents have ingrained in them a strong sense of community, encouraging them to be part of social groups and support community events. This community attitude influences their lives and business today. “We love that we have created personal relationships with our regular customers.” says Viginnia, “We know a lot of them by name, remember their coffee orders and always try to stop for a chat. That’s not always

something that can happen in a larger town or city. Our access into the community through our business has provided us opportunity to add value to, not only the community, but the region.” The sisters are proud of their far-reaching reputation and the focus it brings to their hometown of Bowen. They have an exclusive range of “The Sisters” branded products, are well respected within the wedding business community in the Whitsundays and often greet customers who leave the highway because they have heard of their coffee house. Working alongside each other every day, however, does come with certain stresses. “It’s a super stressful, yet fun and rewarding, way of life.” Says Bianca, “When working with family, especially your sisters, you not only feed off each other’s energy but are also challenged to support each other in ways you wouldn’t necessarily have to in any other job.” Stresses aside, however, there is no doubt the sisters have crafted an ideal working life-style here in Bowen. Along with trusty barista/handyman, Scotty, they bring their unique brand of charm and unmatched level of style and service to the region.

Carl Walker Carl Walker is one of the most prominent local faces in the Bowen farming community. He arrived in Bowen when he was 13, travelling around Australia with his parents in his teens after the family decided to leave New Zealand in search of adventure. Years later, Carl decided it was time to settle in one location and knew, without hesitation, that Bowen would be the ideal spot. 19 years old and full of enthusiasm, Carl started working for Neville and Gayle Willcox who he credits teaching him a lot about farming vegetables in Bowen. By his latetwenties, however, Carl had met his wife Trudy and they decided to buy their own piece of land. “I figured,” says Carl, “That if I was going to work seven days a week, I might as well do it for myself!” Twenty-two years on and Carl has a thriving farming business producing capsicum, cucumbers and cherry tomatoes, distributing both locally, nationally and internationally. One of his greatest accomplishments, however, was in 2008 when he was voted President of the Bowen Gumlu Growers Association. Through the good work and dedication from himself and the broader team, Carl still has this role today. He uses his time to be the voice of the farming community, lobbying for farmers rights and representing his members on a national scale. “We are the people that get our hands dirty” he says, “We, as an organisation, are the best line of communication that can accurately relay what is happening at ground level.” “The farming industry is the backbone of the local community and the driver of the economy, worth an estimated $450million. As a group we work, not just for the farmers, but for the whole community” says Carl. With the recent devastation of Cyclone Debbie costing an estimated $100million to the local farming industry, Carl is constantly tested in his role. However, when he manages to create wins, such as decreasing the backpacker tax from 32.5% to 15%, he knows that the hard work by all the team at the BGGA is worthwhile. A proud Queenslander and Australian citizen since 2002.

HOW TO CARE FOR YOUR CHILD’S ADULT TEETH RIGHT FROM THE START Once kids permanent teeth start to develop you really need to make cleaning them a priority. These teeth will last your child for the rest of her life. Dentists generally recommend starting regular dental cleaning and examinations once the adult teeth grow in to make sure that they remain healthy and cavity-free. Talk to your dentist to find out when your child should come in for his first visit. Your dentist can help you know exactly how to care for your child’s permanent teeth so that you can end up teaching these skills to your child.

The CDBS provides individual benefits for a range of services including

• examinations • x-rays • cleaning • fissure sealing • fillings • root canals • extractions.

TEACHING MINDFULNESS TO CHILDREN Hi, my name is Carlie and I have created a unique program dedicated to teaching children of all ages how to live a fulfilling life with a foundation of mindfulness. I have developed several courses through a belief system that originated from Montessoori Principals which I have then adapted to create my own vision of family daycare, called Michima. I teach students from the age of 3 to 11, in a variety of class sizes and combined age groups so we all learn from each other. We study the art of meditation and yoga, how to focus, the skill of relaxing our bodies with mindful deep breathing from our stomachs to relieve anxiety. We also practice gratitude through writing down what we are grateful for. Older children also learn effective, mindful ways to reflect on playground interactions and bullying, the importance of reflection, outlining our strengths and weakness, how to be our true selves and in-turn create stronger true friendships steering away from following and bullying. IT IS NEVER TOO YOUNG TO LEARN THESE ESSENTIAL LIFE SKILLS. My classes are also fun and interactive, teaching students how to move intelligently through life. We invent things, discuss stereotypes and sexes, steer away from the pressures of society for girls and boys. Girls are encouraged to have an opinion and to speak their minds, be assertive and confident and true to themselves following their own direction. Boys are encouraged to freely express themselves and their emotions through creativity, free flow dance, drama and art. Ultimately, I want my classes to encourage everyone to be their true selves and learn to love, respect and move confidently through life.

DITCH THE SUGAR Sugar cravings are natural, which is why they can be difficult to overcome. Sweetness is the first taste that we prefer from birth, so instantly we are hooked. The taste of sweetness also releases calming endorphins, which give our bodies a natural high. These cravings lead to Australians consuming more than 20 teaspoons of sugar daily. Too much sugar not only contributes to weight gain, its bad for our teeth, it contributes to the early onset of Type 2 diabetes and can contribute to cancer. As with beating any addiction, it’s important to get your mindset right before beginning. When you’re ready to face your addiction, here are some pointers to ensure you stay on track. • EAT REGULARLY

• REACH FOR FRUIT

• DRINK MORE WATER

• REPLACE SNACKS WITH RAW AND NATURAL ALTERNATIVES • TREAT YOURSELF WELL IN OTHER WAYS • DETOX AND LEARN TO LOVE VEGETABLE JUICE Here’s a healthy alternative for you to try when your looking for something sweet.

Hearing loss, the NDIS and you... Hearing help is now available to more people. Are you one of them? One of the best things about the National Disability Insurance Scheme is that it provides funding options for people who before were not eligible for government assistance for hearing health. Prior to the NDIS there was only government funding for hearing assessment, hearing aids and rehabilitation for those with a pension concession card or a DVA white (hearing) or gold card recipients. However, navigating the NDIS system has not been an easy task. We have spent months wading through the process and procedures of the NDIS so we can make it easier for you to get access to the NDIS.

Who is eligible for the NDIS? Firstly, there is general eligibility. Most citizens or permanent residents between the age of 25-65 may be eligible if their disability satisfies the NDIS criteria. That criteria says that

if your disability is likely to be permanent and significant you can receive funding from the NDIS. There is also a component of the NDIS targeted at early intervention for children under 7 years of age. The second part to eligibility, when talking about hearing loss, relates to the severity of the hearing loss. Currently there is no set specific limit for hearing loss but generally, if your hearing test determines (and here comes the technobabble) that you have a hearing loss of 40db HL 4 frequency average in the better ear you may be eligible. This is considered a moderate hearing loss and you would most likely need hearing aids to understand normal speech or rely on speech reading cues.

What help can I get? The key wording for the NDIS is that they will fund reasonable and necessary supports to help you reach your goals and aspirations, and take part in activities to increase your social and economic participation. For hearing loss, this means

assessments and hearing rehabilitation. This may include hearing aids and what’s called assistive listening devices or ALDs. ALDs include items like: • Alert systems e.g. baby cry, smoke alarm, doorbell • Bluetooth accessories • Remote controls • TV streamers • FM systems • Remote Microphones

How do you apply for the NDIS? Clarity have developed a stepby-step guide for accessing the NDIS for hearing loss. The full guide is available on our website but the process consists of six steps: 1. Check that you meet the initial eligibility criteria for the NDIS. 2. Obtain evidence of your hearing loss. 3. Apply for NDIS access using the Access Request Form. 4. Develop your plan. If access is approved an NDIS planner will contact you to help establish your first personalised NDIS plan.

GRANT COLLINS Principal Audiologist/Owner Clarity Hearing Solutions

5. Apply for access to the OHS Program using the OHS Application for NDIS Participants and ensuring you include the required documentation. 6. Make an appointment with your audiologist once you have your plan approved and access to the OHS granted.

Now is the time to act on hearing loss While not every Australian will be covered by the NDIS, hearing health support is now available to a much greater number of the population. If you, or someone you know are struggling with hearing loss, now is the time to address the disorder for good.

Free hearing help is here! Are you eligible for the NDIS? With the advent of the NDIS you may now be eligible for hearing aid funding support, even if you haven’t been eligible in the past. The NDIS opens up funding possibilities for people under 65 who have a permanent and significant hearing loss.

Funding is available for: ■ Hearing aids ■ Rehabilitation ■ Bluetooth accessories ■ Visual alarms ■ Music/TV streamers ■ FM systems ■ Remote microphones Clarity are your expert registered hearing health NDIS providers.

Talk to us today about NDIS access and available supports. Down our onload lin guide e today!
