Is everyone replaceable? I say yes, with the exception of just a few! They say people come into your life for a reason. That every person who crosses your path is there to teach you, guide you and forever change you in someway. It’s not until you are older that you truly understand the meaning of this. There are not enough pages in this magazine for me to write about all of the people who have altered my life. However, as I have to say goodbye to someone who has not only been an employee but someone who is also considered a part of my family, I truly believe in this more than ever. Jemma Albrecht came into my life when my world was in transition from one path to another. Through unexpected circumstances Jemma became the Senior Designer for Core Life Magazine and in turn has guided the publication through many amazing changes, not to mention she was also inspirational in the creation of our sister publication Tripping Magazine. On a personal note, Jemma has taught me that in any circumstance, good or bad, you need to remember that the overwhelming “stuff” of our ever changing life, be it business or family, once written down and put into perspective is nowhere near as big or as hard as it once seemed. That life is all about experiences and adventures. That we all need to look out for one another and not get caught up in the drama life can create around you. Remain true to who we are and how we see the world, no matter what people think! As Jemma moves on to her next adventure, her quirky personality combined with her incredible talent as a designer, her voice of reason and friendship I will miss everyday, although her terrible music choices will not be missed as much! Jemma, I wish you all the best on the many adventures ahead and want to thank you for being the exception to me! I will miss you. xo

Being lucky enough to live at beautiful Shoal Point in the Northern Beaches of Mackay, there is nowhere else in the world I would rather live! Shoal Point beach is the perfect place to enjoy some fun in the sun and has been listed as one of the best family beaches in Queensland. One of the things I love is being able to take the kids fishing in Reliance Creek or to Sunken Reef, both only a ten minute boat trip away. It’s one of the few places left where you can launch a boat off the beach. Although surrounded in natural beauty, the best part of Shoal Point is the people. We have a wonderful neighbourhood. Caring for our Community Residents from across the Whitsunday region may not realise the wonderful work done at Endeavour Foundation in Cannonvale, which provides disability & aged care services to more than 130 local people and their families. “Endeavour Foundation provides individualised person-centred opportunities and support, by shaping the service around the individual, and this in turn enables people to achieve life goals and aspirations by focussing on what is important to them,” Endeavour Foundation’s Service Development and Innovation Manager Tamara Uebergang said. The organisation provides a range of support options for people of all ages, including Disability & Community services, Home and Community Care (HACC) programs, accommodation support, respite, in home care, supported employment, assisted holidays, as well as recreational and social activities. The people who access support at Endeavour Foundation’s Learning and Lifestyle hub and other programs, learn how to develop their independence, confidence, self-esteem, and interaction skills. They are also able to give back to their community, with a group of young adults from the Cannonvale L&L volunteering their time at Bunnings for a few hours each week to do various tasks, while others assist in keeping the local beaches clean and tidy. The people with a disability are also able to get out on the water and learn how to sail, thanks to the staff at Sailability, a not-for-profit organisation. Each fortnight, the staff take people out on a boat to teach them how to sail, which they thoroughly enjoy.

We have all heard it, haven’t we. Communication is the key to effective business management and customer relations. You want your business to be seen as a strong and trusted brand right? What better way to do that than to treat your valued customers with respect and honesty. Consider the recent disruption to flights to and from Bali. Depending on which airline customers were travelling on, the experience that these people had in terms of understanding the situation at hand were vastly different. Investment loan Interest I was having breakfast with some friends and one of them who works as a finance broker was telling us how all the major banks have hit investment property owners with a higher rate of interest on their loans. The trouble with this is that it may be a strategy to cool the property market down in places such as Sydney and Melbourne but Mackay doesn’t need it, nor do most other areas in Australia. A far better strategy would have been to do it by post code. After all, this is not unheard of. Insurance companies do it all the time. It is also interesting to note that even if you are not investing in property but only in shares, you also get hit with a higher interest rate. This seems like profit gouging by the banks when the idea is only to slow down an over heated property market. Many banks have reduced the borrowing capacity to 80% which is a huge hurdle for some people to get over, unless they already have equity available in their own home. The larger banks have tightened up their lending criteria as well, changing the way they assess the likelihood that you will be able to pay back your loan. Of course the banks blame the Australian Prudential Regulation Authority (APRA), who has recently changed the investment lending standards, which, as my finance broker friend told me, was very disappointing given that there was no consultation with any of the industry associations who work on the front line. The supposed housing bubble, predominately in Sydney and Melbourne, that these changes are supposed to fix will have disastrous results on property markets in Mackay and similar areas. Does anyone ever remember that we don’t all live in the major cities?

“A couple of years after arriving in NYC, I went to an audition for a native Australian female voice-over artist. I got the job on the spot and ended up recording about 50 hours of script to create a voice system now in over 400 million GPS and smartphone devices around the world.
“One of the very special parts of this visit to Mackay, will be to return to North Mackay Primary and North High schools. This year is the 100th anniversary of North Mackay Primary and to be able to connect with teachers and students will be a highlight.”

Her childhood idol was Olivia Newton-John, who inspired her to move to America to become a professional singer. With only a suitcase, Karen made the move and chose New York, a move which would put in place the coordinates for a fairytale career.
“On the Saturday I will present a workshop called Recalculating Your Way to Success. I will be teaching how to move forward when things do not go as planned, in business and in life, with my five directions for Recalculating. It is an opportunity to take a look at where you are in your life and take tangible steps to get more of what you want,” Karen said.
“I moved in 2000 with only a suitcase and a dream. I am completely in love with NYC and just feel as if I am meant to live there.

The history of sushi
Sushi has been around for at least 1,800 years. It began in South East Asia in the second century AD as a way of making fish last longer by wrapping rice around the fish and allowing it to ferment. Back in those days the rice was discarded and the fish alone was eaten. In the seventh century sushi spread through China and into Japan where the story of sushi took a different turn. The Japanese started to eat the rice as well. Then, in the 17th century Matsumoto Yoshiichi began making sushi for sale by adding red wine vinegar to the rice, speeding up the fermentation process. In the 19th century the history of sushi evolved again with Hanaya Yohei, the first to put the fish on top of the rice creating what we now call ‘nigiri sushi. This became hugely popular and spread across Japan served from street stalls as the first real ‘fast food sushi’. After the war street stalls were seen as unhygienic and brought inside to more sanitary conditions. Sushi changed from fast-food to a more sophisticated dining experience. These days sushi has become an artful dining experience and a fusion of different cultures. Life is a playground Play time is much more than just fun for children. It’s how they learn, how they problem solve and how they discover where they fit into the big wide world. Logan’s Adventure Playground is no ordinary playground. It will become an exciting space to challenge and engage children, from 5 to 15. In 2011 local business woman, Lisa Christofersen, was approached to help progress a concept of bringing an adventure playground to life. “At the time I was immersed in fundraising for “Logan’s Run” as well as awareness campaigns for childhood cancers. Garth and I had just lost our son, Logan, to cancer. He was only 6 years old. I wanted to make a difference and thought that the $61,000 we raised could help find a cure. “Looking back, I now realise that it was a way to heavily distract and busy myself after the trauma of what had happened. “Whitsunday Regional Council not only approved the playground, but allocated prime real estate within the Botanical Gardens on the Cannonvale Foreshore,” Lisa said. After initial progress was made toward the playground, Lisa took a step back to dedicate time to her daughter. Years later, a new group of volunteers was required to steer the project to completion, so the Play and Shine Project Group was formed. “It’s wonderful to be involved again, working with other major stakeholders; WRC and John Harper Landscape Design,” she said. Joining her on the committee is Kerri Gill, pharmacist and mother; and Remo Di Benedetto, a sales and marketing manager and father. The three are 100 percent volunteers, giving their time to make the exciting project a reality. 26 www.corelife.com.au

A few weeks later they met up for a coffee and humble apple pie at a local café, some 15 years ago now. Shirl’s professional background was in accountancy, administration and law; now she looks after the accounts and marketing for Focus on Water.
When the couple aren’t working, Geoff and Shirl enjoy spending time on their boat. As a backpacker from the United Kingdom, Julie had aspirations of thrill-seeking adventure and new horizons when she arrived in Australia. The last thing she was expecting was to fall in love and stay forever. Julie and Asher Telford met in Airlie Beach in 2005. Ash was a skipper on Tongarra, a 12 metre catamaran. Julie was a fresh-faced backpacker, who arrived at Tongarra’s after-party at Reefos when they met for the first time. They spent their first two years together in Airlie but, with Ash originally being from Kangaroo Island, the couple moved to Adelaide to settle down. Ash became a customs officer for the Marine Unit and Julie was a State Manager for an advertising company. The two roles felt like a great combination to own a charter boat company, with the lure of the blue Whitsundays calling them both home. The very boat that Ash skippered, Tongarra, was for sale. “We spent the first six months of our lives together on Tongarra. That’s why we love her so much. We knew Airlie would be a great place to raise a family, so we didn’t hesitate to move back,” Julie said. The couple owned and operated Tongarra Sailing Adventures and, later, expanded to build Thundercat Whitsundays. With a third exciting new venture almost ready to launch, all the companies have been pulled together under one simple brand, Red Cat Adventures. “We’ve been working on a third product for over a year and can announce Ride to Paradise will be launched in October 2015. Strong business conditions give RBA hope The Reserve Bank of Australia has decided to leave the official cash rate on hold for the third consecutive month as new data shows business confidence is on the rise. Look at more than the interest rate When choosing a home loan, it’s important to compare apples with apples. While finding a low interest rate will be a priority for home buyers, there is a range of additional factors to consider. A home loan might cost you more over the longer term if it isn’t sufficiently flexible or suited to your needs. The following factors are important to consider in addition to the interest rate:
1 Loan purpose
Different home loans are designed with different needs in mind. Some loans have no frills for those who simply want low fees. Others provide greater flexibility with access to helpful money-saving features. There are also loans designed for people seeking to create or build their wealth. Putting the interest rate to one side, speak with your lender about which product might be best suited to you.
2 Fees
This includes the application fee as well as any monthly or annual service fees. When choosing a home loan, look at the comparison rate as well as the advertised rate. The comparison rate includes both the interest rate and some fees and charges payable during the life of the loan, expressed as a single percentage figure. It doesn’t take into account fees and charges that occur or are based on some future event such as redraw fees or early repayment fees, and cost savings such as fee waivers, are not included and may also influence the cost of the loan.
3 Interest rate options
The interest rate option you choose might take precedence over the rate itself. There’s no point locking into a fixed rate home loan just because it’s the cheapest if a variable rate loan will be better suited to your needs, and vice versa. Consider what’s most important – the certainty in budgeting that a fixed rate provides, or the flexibility of a variable rate including greater capacity to make additional voluntary repayments. Alternatively, you might choose a bit of both with a split rate loan.
4 100% interest offset
Depending on your circumstances, it might be worth paying a slightly higher interest rate to access potential money-saving features such as 100% interest offset. This facility links your home loan to your everyday banking
account, with interest repayments calculated on the balance If you have a $250,000 home loan with $10,000 in your everyday banking account, you only pay interest on $240,000. So the more money you have in your linked everyday banking account, the less interest you pay on your home loan.
5 Additional voluntary repayments
Some home owners want to make additional voluntary repayments so they can repay their home loan more quickly and save money in interest repayments. Variable interest rate home loans are generally more flexible in this regard. If you want this flexibility, make sure you choose a home loan product that allows it and check whether any caps apply.
6 Repayment holiday
Think about future life events and how these will impact your home loan needs. For example, if you go from two incomes to one for a short period of time to start a family, switch jobs and take a few weeks off in between, or travel overseas and don’t want to make repayments during that time, the ability to take a repayment holiday can be a good option. If you’re far enough ahead with your repayments, the right choice of loan might make you eligible to take a short break from your repayments in the future. You’ll need to check how long you can take your repayment holiday and understand how interest is accruing during the repayment holiday period.
7 Packaging
Some banks reward you if you hold your home loan and other banking products with them by offering packages that provide a discounted home loan rate and waive certain fees and charges. There is generally one annual fee for a packaged account, but if you add up the savings and discounts they can outweigh this cost.
8 Lender support
Ask your lender about the level of support provided over the loan term duration. Can you meet with your lender in person or speak with them via phone if needed? Do they offer phone, internet and mobile banking access? You don’t want a lender who is unreachable once you’ve taken out your loan. On-going access and support is key. Fences
Rules apply to minimum fence heights and maximum allowable gaps between rails. The minimum height requirement is 1.2 metres, but this can change depending on other ‘climable’ structures nearby, which may increase the required height to 1.8 metres.
Gates
Pool gates must not open inwards to the pool area and must be self-closing and self-latching from all positions. Latches on the gate must be at least 1500mm high from the ground level. Pool gate hinges must be at least 900mm apart.
Doors and windows
There can be no direct access through a door from the house to the pool area.

Beautiful skin is as easy as ABC
With an ever-increasing range of skin treatments on the market, it can be hard to distinguish what works and what doesn’t. How I did it
I started by sectioning off Robert’s hair from the recession down to a point below his crown. With that clipped away, I cut the sides to the length that I wanted. I then un-clipped the top and cut that to the desired length, maintaining some disconnection between the two areas. Once that was done, I blow dried and straightened the top, in order to add further texture by personalising with my scissors. For the shoot however, I wanted to utilise Roberts natural curl to enhance the texture of my haircut, so I shampooed it again. - Shana McClanachan 60 www.corelife.com.au
I’ve been doing Robert’s hair for a while, and have always wanted to cut it short. He was reluctant to cut off his long hair but I knew that a shorter, more rugged style would suit him . So when he agreed to help me out with this issue, I couldn’t wait to get creative and finally give him the hair cut that I’ve been itching to do for months! Keeping in mind that he’s used to having a longer style, I made sure that there would still be enough length through the top and the very front for him to work with, whilst maintaining a tidy, and masculine foundation. It was important to me that I gave him a versatile haircut that he would be comfortable with.

Prior to blow drying I added in some Boost Cream by American Crew, which is an anti-gravity styling cream with a light hold, and predominately used my hands to dry it in the direction that I wanted it to go. I used a small styling brush in certain areas to give lift, and especially at the very front to control and smooth his hair. I then used the mini GHD styling irons to straighten this area. I completed my style with American Crew Fiber, a pliable fiber with high hold and low shine, and worked it through his hair.

Again with this look, I began by blow drying with Boost Cream by American Crew. However this time I used a styling brush throughout the entire top section, to really control the hair and provide the lift and direction that I wanted from the haircut. To finish my style I again used Fiber by Amereican Crew, and a medium hold hair spray, Re-shaper by Sebastian, to really set it in its shape.

Hearing aid commissions exposed A couple of months ago there was a great expose on ABC Radio National concerning commissions and hearing aid sales. It has really opened up an awareness and started conversations about the ethics of having commissions in hearing healthcare and the lack of disclosure of this practice. Commissions may be paid to a number of staff within the organisation, including call centre staff, administrative staff, and of course the clinicians themselves.

If you were to fail your hearing screen, they would book you in for a full hearing assessment appointment with a clinician.
During the call the employee would generally offer a free hearing screen to entice you to book in. Once you do, they are paid the commission.
This appointment booking may result in a commission for the administrative employee. Again, the number of times over the years I have had patients booking in to see me in a state of panic for a full Audiological assessment as they have failed one of these hearing screens believing they are losing their hearing. Upon doing this we find they have completely normal hearing and their results were most likely exaggerated by the administration staff member in order to receive their commission.

These commissions can be in the thousands of dollars and I believe can be a massive carrot in front of the clinician’s nose to upsell to more expensive devices with features that may well be unnecessary for the patient’s needs. Of course not all clinicians are commission driven, but the temptation is there and I do frequently see patients with very basic hearing needs who have been to providers that do this practice and been recommended top of the range hearing aids with features which would never be used or touched and are not congruent with their actual needs. In my opinion hearing clinicians are meant to be healthcare providers with the sole purpose of giving you the best treatment for your hearing in an ethical manner. In any other healthcare industry

commissions are generally prohibited and if there is any conflict of interest it has to be disclosed to the patient. Until we remove commissions which I believe can cloud a clinician’s judgement, patients have every right to question the motives of their hearing provider, at the very least commissions should be disclosed to the patient at the outset. Nearly almost every large hearing company in Australia offer their staff commission incentives. Children, as ‘biologists’, can study the anatomy of the plants they tend; young ‘Scientists’ may change variables in the garden through watering frequency or the spacing of their plants, then collect the data on plant growth, chart the research and write up their analyses and conclusions. As they design the layout of planting beds then lessons on perimeters, measurements and area come to the fore. Even the youngest students can learn basic measurements as they use a ruler to find the proper spacing when planting their seeds or plants. It is surprising just how often maths skills are used outside a dedicated school ‘Mathematics’ class. Reading and writing skills are constantly being practiced as part of the school garden. There are seed packets to read and interpret, along with the recipes used to turn their harvest into a delightful dish. Without even being aware they are learning and improving their skills children are more than happy to undertake these literacy tasks. In the school garden, watering cans are a great way to enhance learning about estimating as well as volume and capacity. In the Junior School, we are making the most of our sprawling gardens. Our Years Three and Four adopt aspects of gardening into their Science Curriculum through the Stephanie Alexander Kitchen Garden program. The students harvest and prepare the fruits and vegetables they grow, providing opportunities to learn about nutrition, when sampling their harvest. Children are much more likely to taste a vegetable they have grown. Gardens at school also provide a wealth of opportunities for teamwork. Children need to work together to prepare the soil, select and plant the seeds, and water the plants. These opportunities to take responsibility and work with others can build students’ confidence, self-esteem, and harvesting their crop is a sign of their success.

For the second year in a row the festival will be held at the Whitsunday Marine Club (VMR) in Cannonvale. This stunning location is surrounded on all sides by the vibrant turquoise of the Coral Sea. Jessica Watson It’s hard to fathom. The isolation, the loneliness. The tricks the mind can play on you when you’ve been at sea for so long. The sheer determination and willpower it took to keep going, no matter what. Most incredibly of all, it was achieved by a 16-year-old girl from Queensland. Australia stopped the moment Jessica Watson sailed into Sydney Harbour in her yacht, Ella’s Pink Lady. It was May 15, 2010, two days before her 17th birthday. Jessica had just become the youngest person to sail solo and unaccompanied around the world. But she didn’t stop there, in fact, her adventure had only just started. On January 25, 2011 she was awarded the prestigious Young Australian of the Year title. Later that year she skippered the youngest crew ever to compete in the iconic Sydney to Hobart yacht race, finishing second in their category.
“It’s hard to understand how big the problem is. We have it so good here in Australia, yet there are millions of people whose lives have been torn apart because of war. All they want is food and water. To know that their children will be safe. All they want for their future is peace. “I met some very resilient people, some who are very brave and will stay in my thoughts forever. It desperately makes me want to do more,” Jessica said.
“I’m so happy with what I have achieved, and more than anything else, I’m proud of who I have become now. I’ve been inspired by so many people, I’m very excited at what my future will bring, but right now, I’m enjoying being happy.
In January 2012, Jessica was announced in the Australia Day Honours list, receiving an OAM (Order of Australia Medal) for services to sailing and being a role model for the youth of Australia.
Determined not to let her fame and title change who she was, Jessica continued to live true to herself, and do what made her happy. As well as studying at university, Jessica became a Youth Ambassador for the United Nations’ World Food Programme. She has been an ambassador for about four years, spending time in Laos, and more recently, Lebanon and Jordan, where she met with displaced families whose lives have been destroyed by Civil War in Syria.
Jessica will be visiting the Whitsundays this September, as a guest speaker at the Whitsunday Writers Festival. As Jessica is currently at University in Melbourne, she’s looking forward to soaking up the warmer weather. “I get the amazing opportunity to talk about my sailing achievements, as well as my book, True Spirit, at the Writers Festival. Later that evening, myself and Ryan Campbell, the youngest pilot to circumnavigate the globe, will host a dinner where the theme is motivation.
“From my perspective, my message has always been very simple, in that you really can achieve anything. I was a girl who was afraid of the water, yet I still learnt to sail. When my mother read me Jesse Martin’s book, Lionheart, I was inspired to sail around the world. I was only 12, but the dream turned into ambition, and I spent the next few years dedicated to achieving it. “I had my failures, in spectacular fashion with scathing media coverage, and I had plenty of doubters, but I persisted and followed what I knew in my heart was achievable. If anything, those failures only made me stronger and better prepared for the journey ahead,” Jessica said. Most of all, Jessica wants people to know she’s happy. Yes she has achieved some amazing accomplishments, but she doesn’t have an overwhelming need to strive for bigger and better.

The Passport to Airlie competition is held in Cairns, Townsville, Mackay, Rockhampton, Sunshine Coast, Gold Coast and Newcastle. Seven regional bands will win the chance to perform at the festival as well as $1000, VIP tickets and accommodation. A final winning band is chosen over the festival weekend and they are invited back to perform in 2016. The event helps to promote the festival to musicians and music lovers and at the same time promote local original artists. Trail To Triumph will start in Moranbah before sun up and the runners will head towards Eungella and up the range, aiming to get at least 100km in the first day. Day 2 will be hot and painful, running on red dirt roads under a baking hot sun. Again we will aim to complete at least 100km allowing us to finish Day 3 with a shorter 50km session. Trail to Triumph is a local, community event that aims to raise money and awareness of Mesothelioma, a rare and currently incurable cancer caused by asbestos exposure.
